The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

The gold dissolution in sulfuric acid media during industrial oxidative leaching test of sulfide gold-copper flotation concentrates has been achieved. The reason for this was using technological water containing thiocyanates and cyanides, which can dissolve gold under these conditions. The carbon in column (CIC) process for gold recovery from these solutions was proposed. However, significant amounts of copper and iron were adsorbed onto the carbon during CIC technology industrial tests. This resulted in a decrease of the gold content in the loaded carbon up to 0.5 kg/t. Further development of the technology was conducted by optimisation of gold and impurities stripping and implementation of carbon reactivation. It was shown, that the copper extraction from the loaded carbon during cyanide treatment was about 95%. The copper content in the stripped carbon after cyanide treatment was 1.76 kg/t. The gold recovery during high-pressure elution by caustic solution was 98%. The hydrochloric acidic treatment with thermal pre-treatment (reactivation) for removing iron and calcium from gold-free carbon was proposed. In this case, the iron and calcium extractions from carbon were 40-45 and 50-55% respectively. These tests showed that for carbon recycling the sequence operations of ‘cyanide treatment, gold elution, thermal pre-treatment, hydrochloric acidic treatment’ can be used. Nowadays the development of automatic on-line sampling systems has enabled large amounts of data to be available to plant managers. These data are inevitably prone to random and sometimes systematic errors. Data reconciliation methods are used to deal with random errors. In these methods, the measured data are adjusted in accordance to their error, so that the mass conservation law is satisfied at the same time. Measured data may also contain systematic errors, using these data in mass balancing software will result in inaccurate or even irrational results. In this paper three methods for detecting systematic errors (global test, node constraint test and maximum power constraint test) were presented. A step by step method to locate the systematic errors was demonstrated. Then, the new version of Movazen©, a mass balancing software, was introduced and used to locate systematic errors in the measurements taken from the Sarcheshmeh pilot plant copper flotation circuit. To achieve maximum efficiency in any purification stage, the flotation should be continued until the concentrate grade reaches the feed grade. During sampling from rougher cells of the Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper concentrator plant 1, it was revealed that the concentrate grade of the last five cells of rougher circuit was close to feed grade. Therefore, it was suggested that the concentrate of the aforementioned cells be mixed with rougher feed. In this study, one of eight rougher circuit rows was selected and evaluated. The floatability tests were performed to compare the flotation behaviour of rougher feed and mixture of concentrate of the last five cells with rougher feed in the laboratory scale by a tree analysis process. The results showed that mixing of rougher last five cell concentrate with feed has a detrimental effect on flotation efficiency that leads to a 3% decrease in recovery. An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

Matte tapping is one of the most critical operations of a matte smelter. Every smelter has developed particular matte tapping practices and tap-hole repair strategies that are often based on the experience of the smelter personnel. As a result, very little information has been published on these critical topics. This paper aims at providing the information gathered from a survey conducted in the PGM and Ni industries on matte tapping practices and tap-hole maintenance strategies for different PGM-Ni matte smelting operations.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the possibility of producing aggregates with an increased content of regular particles, as well as to present a method of aggregate production which has not previously been used in the industry. Traditional aggregate production circuits require the application of three or four grinding stages (depending on the particle size of the feed), but for fine particle fractions of aggregates, irregular grains occur on average with a content of 10%. The innovative technological circuit can produce the aggregates with the content below 3%, even in a single- or two-stage crushing circuit. Downstream jig beneficiation of such prepared material results in higher separation sharpness, lower probable error index (Ep) and imperfection (I). The Decar Nickel District is a greenfield discovery by FPX Nickel Corp., of nickel mineralisation located in central British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Baptiste deposit is part of the Decar Nickel District and is a unique deposit containing a nickel-iron alloy mineral called awaruite, with over 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource grading 0.12% Davis Tube Recoverable (DTR) nickel. This deposit represents a significant nickel resource. Awaruite is a high density and ferromagnetic mineral, which could be recovered, along with magnetite that is also present in the samples, using magnetic separation. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the properties of the awaruite and its metallurgical response. This information is imperative for the set-up of the variables involved in its concentration. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss the effect of magnetic field strength for the recovery of nickel from Baptiste deposit samples. Magnetic separation at bench and pilot scale with different magnetic field strengths is evaluated as a concentration method for awaruite. Mineralogical information is provided to support the results and also to briefly assess the variability of DTR nickel within the deposit. The Baptiste deposit is unique and will benefit from a sound scientific understanding of the process solution as well as other ongoing work. If successful, the outcome will lead to the development of a mine. With greater than 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource, the mine would represent a significant new source of nickel globally. Biooxidation, a biohydrometallurgical process, utilizes a mixed microbial consortium to mediate the dissolution of refractory gold-bearing ores to enhance gold recovery during cyanidation. Recognition of water as a critical resource has prompted improved water management strategies within mining and minerals processing. Bioremediated wastewater from the cyanidation tailings provides a potential water source to supplement the water required for the biooxidation circuit, reducing freshwater extraction. Gold biomining operations have typically been reluctant to recycle this wastewater due to the potential inhibitory effects of cyanide and thiocyanate (SCN-) on the microbial population. Historical process upsets suggest that the microorganisms are sensitive to SCN- concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. However, effective bioremediation processes resulting in effluents with low or negligible SCN- concentrations may allow gold biomining plants the opportunity to recycle available water. Microbial activity as well as alteration in community structure were monitored as a function of increasing SCN- concentration over the range of 0 mg/L to 5 mg/L to investigate the response of the biooxidation community to potential SCN- spikes resulting from upsets in the remediation process. Appropriate microbial growth and ferrous iron oxidation activity with a nominal shift in community structure were observed at SCN- concentrations up to 1 mg/L. Thiocyanate concentrations above 1 mg/L resulted in the complete inhibition of ferrous iron oxidation activity. This was attributed to Leptospirillum ferriphilum’s sensitivity to SCN-. Exposure to a SCN- concentration of 5 mg/L resulted in a lower cell concentration and a significant increase in growth lag time, and the absence of L. ferriphilum from the microbial population. At. caldus and Ap. cupricumulans were still present at 5 mg/L SCN-, although Ap. cupricumulans was unable to oxidise ferrous iron at this SCN- concentration. It was concluded that recycling bioremediated cyanidation tailings wastewater within the biooxidation circuit is feasible; however, to retain process performance, SCN- concentrations should not exceed 1 mg/L. Enargite in porphyry copper deposits is an important mineral as it displays good floatability under the presence of the collectors usually used in the flotation of copper sulfides. As a result, copper concentrates grades are reduced. As scarcity of water resources is a problem relevant to Chilean mining, the use of seawater is a feasible solution. The behaviour of copper sulfides and molybdenite in the process of flotation in seawater was previously studied but not for enargite. The objective of this research is to study the behaviour of the enargite in different conditions of electrochemical potential during the process of flotation using seawater. The study was carried through micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at Eh values ranging from -300 to 500 mV(SHE), both in seawater and aqueous solutions containing calcium and magnesium. The results show that at pH 10.5 in seawater, the enargite and chalcopyrite recoveries are reduced throughout the whole range of Eh studied. At pH 9 in seawater, enargite and chalcopyrite are depressed under reducing and slightly oxidising conditions. The recovery of both minerals drastically decreases at Eh values lower than -100 mV and greater than 400 mV. The behaviour of enargite in seawater flotation differs from that observed in conventional water, since in the latter case the recovery of enargite decreases at higher potentials close to 500 mV. Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants. "The beneficiation of iron ore slimes by selective flocculation was studied. Polyacrylamide (PAM) and guar gum were used as flocculant, along with sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a dispersant. The samples collected were initially subjected for chemical and mineralogical studies. The mineralogical studies indicated the presence of haematite and goethite as the principal iron-bearing minerals, with quartz and kaolinite as gangue minerals. The selective flocculation tests showed that the Fe grade can be enhanced from 58.24% to 64.60% Fe at a recovery of 66.33% using polyacrylamide as the flocculant. A Fe grade of 63.20% at a recovery of 68.04% was obtained using guar gum as flocculant. The efficacy of the studies was analysed using a separation index, which indicated that the higher separation index was obtained with the tests employing polyacrylamide as the flocculant. IntroductionIndia is endowed with huge reserves of highgrade iron ore and is one of the prominent producers in the world. As the high-grade iron ores have been exhaustively mined, it has become imperative to use low-grade iron ores, fines, and slimes to meet the growing demand. Also, generation of fines and slimes during mining and processing contributes to loss of minerals to the extent of 30% of the total value (Mandre and Panigrahi, 1997). These fines/slimes are often discarded as waste into tailing ponds, containing considerable amounts of iron. Therefore beneficiation of tailings/slimes has become necessary for optimal utilization of the resources.In recent years, interest in recovery of valuable minerals from low-grade ores, slimes, and tailings has increased worldwide. These activities are initiated not only to recover minerals but also to address various environmental issues associated with fine particle treatment. The literature reveals that several technologies have been employed in this regard, including flotation, advanced gravity separation, and high-intensity magnetic separation. However, these processes are found to be ineffective for fine particle treatment due to lower collision probability in flotation, decreased gravitational effect in gravity separation, and reduced drag force in magnetic separation, among other factors (Batisteli and Peres, 2008; Das et al., 2007; Dworzanowski, 2012; Rocha, Caneado, and Peres, 2010). Therefore, it is in this regard that selective flocculation has gained importance in treating slimes in recent years."

INTRODUCTION The Miller chlorination process has assumed a preeminent position in the refining of gold bullion, a position it has maintained for over half a century. In the early sixties considerable interest was aroused by the idea of producing a consistently high grade bullion at the mine smelthouses themselves. However, as the use of chlorine in industrial plants is associated with considerable hazards, oxygen was considered a natural alternative, apart from bing less expensive than chlorine. Partial refining at the mine smelthouses would considerably decrease the requirements made on Rand Refinery Limited as well as indicating the possibility of reducing final refining costs. An added factor would be the purer silver chloride obtainable, after prior removal of the base metals by oxygen injection, which would facilitate the production of high-purity silver. The free energies of formation of the oxides of the metals;- silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron and bismuth indicate that, with the exception of silver, these metals should be capable of removal as oxides by oxygen injection. Rose1 had shown that during injection of gold bullion, considerable loss of silver to the boraxsilver slag occurred and, furthermore, that copper removal was not efficient and oxide attack on the refractories was severe. Plant test work2 had confirmed the difficulty of copper removal, but had shown that zinc and lead were almost completely removed. The difficulty of copper removal by oxygen injection warranted further investigation. Also, the high decomposition pressure of silver oxide suggested that by suitable control of the slag composition it might be possible to reduce to very small proportions the silver carried into the slag as oxide. The oxidation of copper by oxygen injection and subsequent dissolution of the oxide in a slag may occur according to the following reactions; Reactions 4 and 5 were considered because of the relatively high solubility of oxygen in molten silver and silver alloys. Thermodynamic data indicate that there is little possibility of any reaction involving the formation of CuO occurring at temperatures above 1 000 °C. To ensure that the operative reactions 1 and 4 take place to the maximum extent, the following factors He significant. (a) an increase in the activity of the copper in the bullion, (b) an increase in the partial pressure of oxygen in the system, (c) an increase in the activity of the oxygen in solution in the metal, (d) a decrease in the activity of cuprous oxide in the slag. From practical considerations, the operative variable most easily susceptible to control is the composition of the slag. SOLUBILITY OF COPPER OXIDES IN BOROSILICATE SLAGS Very scanty information exists on systems containing copper oxides but the indications are that slags containing considerable amounts of boric oxide would possibly prove to be the best solvents for cuprous and cupric oxides. This is attributed to the fact that the activities of copper oxides are much lower in boric oxide slags than in slags in which silica is the main network former. The number of possible slags containing boric oxide was limited by consideration of liquidus temperature, viscosity, corrosive action on refractories, volatilization, and ultimately cost (for industrial application). Slags in the systems soda-boric oxide-silica and lime-boric oxide-silica were selected paying due attention to the above limitations. Additions of 5, 10 and 15 per cent cupric oxide were made to the finely ground, premelted slags. These mixtures were then reground and 2g quantities held in re crystallized alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1150°C and 1 250°C respectively for 30 minutes. The crucibles were removed from the furnace, rapidly cooled, cut in half longitudinally, and a thin section taken from one half was subjected to microscopic examination.

The mathematical models of semivariograms can be classified according to whether or not they correspond to situations where the second order stationarity conditions are satisfied (§ 3.3.4). If second order stationarity exists, the a priori variance s2 of x (z) also exists and is finite. For large distances h such that x (z) and x (z + h) are not correlated, the semi- variogram ? (h) will reach a value equal to s2 [this is a consequence of (3.27) above]. This limiting value is called the sill C of the semivariogram, and the distance at which ? (h) reaches the sill is called the range. The range of the semi- variogram obtained from a given type of sample corresponds to the distance of influence of these samples. If only the intrinsic hypothesis is satisfied, the sample variance is an increasing function of the size of the area or volume in which the samples are located, and the semivariogram ? (h) will be a continuously increasing function of h. Remark: It will be shown in Chapter 7 that the variance s2 of x (z) in the ore body O is equal to the average value of ? (h) in O. If ? (h) is a non-decreasing function with sill C, the average value of ? (h) in O will be less than C. s2 and C will be equal only if for some values of h in O, ? (h) exceeds C. In practice, if the range of the semivariogram is small with respect to the dimensions of the ore body, the difference between C and s2 will be negligible.

Teck Metals Ltd operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Since 1997, KIVCETTM flash smelting technology has been utilized for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Trail Operations’ furnace uses four water-cooled jackets for bullion tapping. This paper provides an overview of KIVCET bullion tapping for the past 16 years, and discusses successes and challenges encountered with respect to operations, training, and monitoring.

Since the early 1970s research has been ongoing to develop a cost-effective way of continuously mining the narrow reef, hard rock, typical of South African gold and platinum mines. In the late1980s it was shown that impact ripping was a practical solution for the deep gold mines. In March2001 Lonmin and Sandvik agreed to co-operate in an endeavour to design and manufacture a prototype narrow reef mining machine with the ultimate aim of producing such a machine on a commercial basis that would enable Lonmin to create a safer and more productive environment within its mines and for Sandvik to enhance its leading position as a supplier of a new generation hard rock cutting machine. This paper describes the developed technology, the current progress of the delivery of the required objectives and the optimum mining layout for the roll-out of the mining method.
