The Upper Group 2 (UG2) chromitite reef is a shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebody in the South African Bushveld Complex, which strikes for hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 500 m. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes and bords. Little work has been done in the past to determine the strength of pillars on the UG2 Reef and design was done using formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to oversized pillars with consequent sterilization of ore. In this paper we describe a back-analysis of stable and failed UG2 pillars on the Bushveld platinum mines, and provides a strength formula for UG2 pillars. The formula may be used cautiously on all Bushveld platinum mines with similar geotechnical, geometrical, and geomechanical conditions to the pillars in the database.

Typical depressants for selective reverse flotation of iron oxides from complex silicates do not generally show high levels of efficiency. Therefore, as a hot topic, there are several ongoing investigations in this area. The main aim of this paper is exploring the potential of using humic acid (HA) as a depressant in reverse cationic flotation of hematite from complex silicates. For such a process, the wettability and flotation behaviour of pure minerals (hematite and silicates) was investigated at pH 10 in the presence of HA and cationic collector. Adsorption mechanism of HA on these minerals was measured by zeta-potential and FTIR. Results of flotation tests showed that at the lower concentrations of HA, selective separation of silicates from hematite is beneficial, where the floatability of amphibole was higher than pyroxene. A higher separation efficiency of hematite through reverse flotation was observed in the presence of amphibole, in comparison with the presence of pyroxene. Wettability studies showed that HA has a significant effect on reducing the hydrophobicity of treated minerals with the collector. The adsorption, ZPC and FTIR test results indicated that HA was adsorbed on both silicates and hematite. However, the absorption intensity onto hematite was much higher than silicates. It was found that the adsorption mechanism of HA on hematite takes place through both strong H-bonding and ligand exchange. Globally, the demand for mineral products is ever increasing. Extraction of these mineral resources results in the continuous production of a huge volume of waste material, including tailing dumps. The mass of tailings usually exceeds the actual resource and often contains hazardous contaminants. This study investigated the effects of tailings disposal on soil, water, and air quality in the Nampundwe area. Water, soil, and dust samples were collected from different locations in the surrounding communities. The constituents analysed in the samples included copper, cobalt, iron, sulfate, and silica. According to the results obtained, some seepages occurred from the tailings impoundment to the shallow aquifer in the area. However, the general water quality meets the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) statutory limits. Recorded concentrations of sulfate (1500 mg/l), copper (1.5 mg/l), cobalt (1.0 mg/l), iron (2.0 mg/l), and silica were between 0.003 mg/l and 705 mg/l, which is far below ZEMA’s statutory limit. Silica concentration was also evident in the air. The highest concentration recorded was 260 ppcc (particle per cubic centimeter) recorded in July 2019 from the northern direction of the tailings dam. The concentration was below the statutory limit of 350 ppcc. The topsoil from the northern part of the tailings recorded a silica dust concentration of 39.9 ppcc. Iron was evident in the underground soil with a concentration of 8.01 ppcc, cobalt 0.005 ppcc, copper 0.051 ppcc, while sulfate was recorded as 0.41 ppcc.

Sphalerite flotation using copper sulfate has been performed in the industry for decades and the mechanism of Cu activation is well established. Despite its ubiquity, many practical questions surrounding copper sulfate persist. It is not clear how iron selectivity is achieved in zinc circuits given the propensity of iron sulfides to be activated by copper. Also, the large variation in copper sulfate dosages across different plants and ore types cannot be explained. Lastly, Zn flotation with greatly reduced copper sulfate dosages attracts significant interest and has been demonstrated in certain laboratory settings, but no information is available on why those laboratory solutions have not been adopted in plant practice. Flotation studies are presented that demonstrate that Zn flotation with very low copper sulfate dosages is possible when using certain novel collectors that are not practised in the industry. However, these reagent schemes are impractical because of a heretofore unappreciated and critical role that copper sulfate plays in Fe rejection. With both very low and standard copper sulfate dosages, copper sulfate influences both Zn flotation and Fe rejection. The results highlight the multifaceted role of copper sulfate in zinc flotation and the need to holistically consider complex systems’ behaviour to understand flotation reagent mechanisms and optimise plant performance. The slags arising from ferrochromium plants were simulated by additions of CaO and Fe2O3 (6 per cent each), Cr2O3 (7 and 12 per cent), and Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 together (6 and 12 per cent respectively) to slags in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. These additions were made to slags having an SiO2 content of 45 per cent and an MgO-to-Al2O3 ratio of 4 to 3 or 3 to 4. The effect of these oxide additions on the liquidus temperatures, electrical conductivities, and viscosities was determined. The additions of CaO and Fe2O3, although having little effect on liquidus temperatures, decreased viscosity and increased electrical conductivity. The addition of Cr2O3 raised the liquidus temperatures considerably, and tended to decrease viscosity in the temperature range 1 700 to 1 800°C and to increase electrical conductivity.

"The aim of this paper is to enhance the understanding of the nature of mining input technologies in the South African mining industry. In the context of this research, mining inputs refer to input technology into the activities in mining engineering fields, which include mining-related production activities, rock engineering, mine ventilation, and mine transportation (handling of personnel, material, broken rock, and pumping). Input technologies in supporting fields such as geology, other engineering disciplines, human resource, procurement, finance, as well as downstream fields that include metallurgy, and marketing of minerals, were disregarded.The mining input technologies were divided into 12 nodes, and data from a sample of 150 first-tier mining suppliers was analysed. It was found that, in general, there is a high local content in mining input technologies, particularly as regards technical support services, artefacts, and machine technologies. This points to the presence of mining-induced backward linkages in the South African mining industry. The majority (83%) of companies that provide input technologies into mining are located in Gauteng Province, and relatively few are found in provinces where mining is concentrated such as North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State. IntroductionSouth Africa is well endowed with minerals, with more than fifty different minerals being mined throughout the country. For this and other reasons, mining is one of the crucial pillars in the South African economy and its importance is well documented (Robinson and von Below, 1990; Creamer, 2010; Department of Mineral Resources, 2015). In 2013, South Africa was the largest global producer of chromium, ferrochrome, platinum group metals (PGMs), and vermiculite and the second largest global producer of antimony, manganese, titanium, and vanadium (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2014). In 2013, the mining industry contributed 6.7% to South Africa’s GDP and was the fifth largest sector in the economy, as shown in Figure 1."

"Global demand for the three platinum group metals (PGMs) Pt, Pd, and Rh has been steadily growing due to their widespread use in emission control, industrial catalysis, and numerous other applications. The primary supply of PGMs is currently the mining industry. However, legislative, operational, and environmental challenges faced by many mining operations result in erratic supply patterns and deficits for these three metals. Naturally, recycling scrap material to recover Pt, Pd, and Rh has therefore aroused research interest in the scientific and engineering communities. Given that the majority of the global demand for these three metals is driven by emission control devices, autocatalytic converters are therefore a significant source of already processed and beneficiated PGMs for recycling.Although pyrometallurgical processes dominate the recycling industry, hydrometallurgical processes may offer certain advantages, chief among these being lower emissions and reduced energy consumption. In this investigation, scrap converter material was leached in acidic chloride media and the leach liquor subjected to solvent extraction and cloud point extraction (CPE) to recover the PGMs. The recoveries for Pt and Pd using Alamine 308® dissolved in kerosene with decanol as a modifier were 95% and 81%, respectively. The maximum recoveries using CPE after complexation with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) in the presence of Triton X-100 and tin (II) chloride dihydrate as a reductant were 97% for Pd, 96% for Pt, and 91% for Rh. This demonstrates that CPE, although relatively new, may have some potential as a breakthrough PGM recovery technology. IntroductionPlatinum group metals (PGMs) have found a wide variety of applications in different industries due to their chemical, catalytic, and physical properties. PGMs are essential in automobile emission abatement, petroleum refining, and the pharmaceutical and electrical industries (Carabias-Martinez et al., 2000). However, the abundance of PGMs in the Earth’s crust is low and their primary sources are fast depleting (Crundwell et al., 2011).The high demand for PGMs, together with social, economic, environmental, and political aspects related to their production, has led to concerns about their future supply. This has resulted in renewed interest in recycling end-of-life material. PGM supply from recycling has doubled over the last decade, and currently contributes 22% to global supply (Johnson Matthey, 2016). This is in part due to the environmental, social, and operational challenges associated with mining of PGMs. For example, labour unrest, energy cuts, declining commodity prices, and declining ore grades have collectively made the mining landscape economically challenging (KPMG, 2015). On the other hand, the high content of PGMs in secondary sources makes their recovery from the increasing quantities of waste products important from a resource conservation viewpoint. Moreover, PGMs obtained through recycling have been demonstrated to have a 1% environmental cost from a life-cycle perspective, whereas PGMs obtained from mining contribute the remaining 99% of environmental cost (Bossi and Gediga, 2017). Sustainable resource recovery and the economic incentive of recycling have therefore been major drivers to justify investment in PGM recycling. The autocatalytic converter industry accounts for about 70% of the global consumption of these metals (Johnson Matthey, 2016) and therefore recycling spent converters has become a major source of Pt, Pd, and Rh (Figure 1)."

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. "SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country's large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."

"The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. "Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

The South African mining industry plays a significant role in the economy of the country. Nonetheless, the negative impacts on the environment continue to prevail. In regions where mining exists in proximity to communities, mining activities have led to the disruption of modality. Rural communities are mostly affected as they depend on land use for agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. The conversion of land for mining activities often leaves the communities vulnerable when mines close because of the limited life span of mines. An ongoing discourse focuses on how the mining industry can contribute to sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. Post-mining transformation offers an approach for the mining companies to contribute to sustainable livelihoods post-mine closure by strengthening rural-urban linkages, which ensures inclusive development of both rural and urban areas. The paper employs a case study approach to Richards Bay Minerals and the adjacent rural communities of Sokhulu and Mbonambi. It sets out to understand the post-mining transformation employed by RBM and explore the rural-urban linkages that manifest as a result. Findings show that sand dune rehabilitation employed by RBM is successful in restoring soil fertility and establishing the natural ecosystem. The casuarina planted to rehabilitate the dunes is used to spur an alternative charcoal industry post-closure. The main rural-urban linkages that manifest are flows of people due to job opportunities and flows of goods from the sale of charcoal produced. However, there is a lack of communication and lack of authority to ensure responsible management of the casuarina plantation and equitable sharing of benefits. The paper recommends that other post-mining transformation strategies such as eco-tourism should be explored and that the government, at both national and local level, the community and the mine should be involved to ensure overall success and sustainability of the strategy. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

Irgiredmet has substantial experience on RIP and RIL technology for gold recovery, having started development of ion exchange technology in 1964. Irgiredmet specialists were involved in the majority of RIL and RIP projects in the former Soviet Union and Russia, and took part in commissioning of practically all plants using ion exchange technology. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for designing 15 RIP plants of the former USSR using bifunctional macroporous anionite AM-2B or its analogs. This paper is devoted to the laboratory, pilot plant testing and introduction of RIP technology conducted in cooperation with GC Pertopavlovsk. Medium base resin PuroLite S992 (PuroGold) was used as adsorbent. Some adsorption regularities and the affinity of resin to metal cyanide complexes were studied. Laboratory batch and continuous pilot tests on resin-in-pulp process were held for oxidised ores from Pioneer, Albyn and Malomyr mines (Amur region, Russia) owned by the Petropavlovsk company. A simplified flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration was developed. Alkaline cyanide solution was used as gold eluent and gold was recovered from eluates by electrowinning. Process design criteria were developed on the basis of the testwork results, and the plants were designed and constructed by GC Petropavlovsk. The RIP plant at Pioneer was commissioned in May 2008, at Malomyr in August 2010, and at Albyn deposit in December 2011. These plants are currently in operation at design performance at throughputs from 3 to 6.5 Mt/year. The primary gold ores of Pioneer and Malomyr deposits are refractory to cyanidation; Irgiredmet also completed continuous testwork on RIP technology using medium-base resin for pressure oxidation (POX) residues derived from their flotation concentrates. In 2019 a hydrometallurgical plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrate after POX was commissioned at Pokrovsky mine (Amur region). "Tapping operations at ferroalloy smelters generate a significant amount of fume. Effective capture of fumes is required to meet the obligations of environmental, as well as occupational, legislation.A study was completed on an existing fume extraction system at a ferromanganese furnace tapping area. The area under consideration included the tap-hole, launder, and ladle area. The study consisted of site test work as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to identify and evaluate solutions.Site test work and observations during furnace operation provided a baseline of system performance as well as input parameters for CFD modelling. Gas flow rates and energy contents from each extraction area were measured. Photographs and video footage were taken to evaluate areas of fume leakage.The CFD study was firstly validated against site observations to ensure the accuracy of input parameters. Thereafter several modification concepts were modelled and suitable combinations were investigated to ensure robust solutions. THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL GEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION SYMPOSIUM (Summary Account) This Symposium, co-sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Society of Economic Geologists, was held in Toronto, Canada in April, 1970. Over 700 delegates attended from 26 countries. Ninety papers were presented at the symposium and another 18 papers were read by title. The programme included: An Opening Session, Five General Sessions, a session on Remote Sensing Methods, a session on Geochemical Prospecting for Petroleum and Natural Gas, a session on Primary Halos and Lithogeochemical Methods, and a session on Statistics and Evaluation of Geochemical Data. The delegates were welcomed by Dr J. M. Harrison, President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Dr C. H. Smith, Regional Vice-President, North America of the Society of Economic Geologists. Dr D. R. Derry of Toronto delivered the opening address to the Symposium entitled 'Geochemistry-the link between ore genesis and exploration'. Dr Derry considered the various hypotheses on the origin of economic mineral deposits and expressed his belief that the next ten years will show evidence of an increased proportion of ore bodies that owe their origin, at some stage in time, to supergene agencies. He stressed that 'there are no sharp divisions between processes that form and destroy ore bodies at or near surface and those that form or destroy them at a depth of 20 kilometres in the earth's crust. The more we understand about the migration and concentration of metals the more accurately we can apply this knowledge to searching for unknown concentrations, whether at rock surface or at depth. To learn more about these processes of ore genesis we must rely on geochemical studies co-ordinated with field observations'. The five general sessions included accounts of progress in geochemical prospecting in different countries of the world, case histories describing the application of soil, stream sediment, geobotanical and biogeochemical techniques, papers on the behaviour of different elements under varied environmental conditions, discussions on analytical methods and the use of stable isotopes in mineral exploration. It is anticipated that the proceedings of the Symposium will be published late in 1970 or early in 1971 as a Special Volume of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. All registrants at the Symposium will receive a copy of this publication and copies will be available for purchase. At a special meeting called during the Symposium, charter members of the Association of Exploration Geochemists approved a constitution and elected an interim Council which will organize procedure and formulate policy during the coming year. The interim president of the Association is J. Alan Coope, Newmont Mining Corporation of Canada Limited, Toronto, Canada. More information on the constitution and membership in the Association will be distributed to learned societies and technical magazines in the near future. Membership will be open to exploration geochemists in all countries of the world. SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL FOR PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS Report on Registration The Professional Engineers Act (Act 81 of 1968) came into force on the 14th February, 1969. At the time it was recognised that the success of the Act would depend in large measure on the extent to which engineers in South Africa would become registered professional engineers in terms of the provisions of the Act. The promulgation of the Act and its provisions relevant to registration were the subject of considerable publicity during 1969. This has resulted in a rate of application for registration far beyond the capacity of the very active committees set up for this purpose by the South African Council for Professional Engineers (SACPE).
