Mining and plant disciplines can benefit from pre-concentration of UG2 platinum ores in a dense medium separation (DMS) plant. The main benefit of DMS is the selective discard of waste from the feed stream, thus improving project economics while reducing the power and water requirements for processing. On the mining side, with the correct combination of variables, implementing DMS as a pre-concentration step can reduce cut-off grades and, as a result, increase ore reserves. In addition, the use of DMS technology gives the mine team the opportunity to consider alternative mining methods for an operation. The challenges of balancing the mining tonnage, methods, and resulting grades with the process plant size, recoveries, and DMS discard volumes have resulted in the development of a model to optimize value on new projects or existing operations. This paper will focus on these benefits from a mining and plant perspective, quantifying the water and power savings, and look at the economic benefits of pre-concentration and the effect of metal prices, plant feed grade, and DMS efficiency in different mining environments.

Although online free cyanide analysers are widely available and used in gold leaching operations worldwide, reliable automated free cyanide concentration control is not consistently achieved in many of these operations. Effective cyanide concentration control is complex owing to amongst others, the long residence times and ore feed variations. Model Predictive Control (MPC) has been proven to provide superior cyanide concentration control over traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, leading to savings in operational costs and reduced leachable gold losses. In the first example reported in this paper, MPC has improved control of the free cyanide concentration by keeping it within the required range 73% of the time during testing, compared to the previous PID controller that only achieved this target 30% of the time. This represents a 143% improvement. Another example demonstrates a 22% reduction in cyanide usage as a result of using MPC. MPC functionality is rarely available on the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control systems installed at gold plants, hence it is implemented on a personal computer (PC) networked to the cyanide analyser and plant infrastructure. Mintek has developed an embedded MPC that installs into the Mintek Cynoprobe analyser, adding MPC functionality without the need for additional PC and network infrastructure, reducing installation costs. This allows plants to minimise their expenditure on additional infrastructure while gaining the benefits of superior MPC technology for multiple cyanide dosage points. This paper will present results showing that the embedded MPC performs as well as Mintek’s existing PC-based StarCS MPC controller, making it a viable alternative for infrastructure-constrained gold plants. Recovery of precious metals from hydrochloric solution using sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent was examined. Sulfur-impregnated adsorbent with adsorption abilities of precious metals can be prepared from activated carbon using pyrolysis at 600 oC under 10 % H2S gas flow, and the adsorbed Au and Pd were precipitated as metal phase on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbents after precious metals adsorption were burned at 700 oC to obtain the residue mainly containing precious metals. The adsorbent was found to be highly efficient and selective for the uptake of precious metals, especially Au, in the presence of excess base metal ions from simulated spent automotive catalyst eluted solution using a column pack test. It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidizing pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products, and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proved difficult. This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during a high-chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry as well as concentrate grades and recoveries to produce a statistically meaningful result. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial. To demonstrate the protocol, data gathered during a plant trail in a PGM concentrate will be presented describing the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical response observed.

Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

"Low-pressure cold gas dynamic spraying was used to deposit WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo coatings onto mild steel. Dense coatings with very low porosities were produced. No decarburization occurred during deposition and no deleterious phases were formed. The coatings were subjected to standardized material characterization tests, as well as slurry abrasion testing to assess their wear behaviour. The wear tests were conducted in synthetic minewater-silica slurries, while distilled watersilica slurries were used as a control. The hardness of the coatings, 512HV0.3 and 458HV0.3 for WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo respectively, are comparable to those achieved using high-temperature coating processes. The abrasion wear rates for both coatings were less than 5 mg/min and 10 mg/min in the distilled water-silica and synthetic mine water-silica slurries respectively. The approximately 50% increase in wear rate in the synthetic minewater slurry is attributed to a synergistic corrosive wear mechanism. The predominant wear mechanisms were identified as binder smearing and delamination, with carbide grain fracture and pull-out. IntroductionSlurry abrasion is a common phenomenon in mining operations, particularly in pipelines transporting, for example, sand-water slurries. This type of wear can cause pipeline fracture, shortened operational lifetimes, and impede pipeline efficiency. To reduce or limit abrasion, thermally sprayed tungsten-carbide-based coatings are often used as pipe linings (Kanchan et al., 2010). This is due to their attractive mechanical properties, which include high wear resistance, stiffness, hardness, compressive strength, and tensile strength. These properties are provided by the coating microstructure and composition, which is a blend of hard, wear-resistant tungsten carbide (WC) particles embedded in a fracture-tough metallic binder phase (Brookes, 1997). Cobalt (Co) is the most commonly used binder due to its excellent wetting of the WC phase and moderate mechanical properties; however, its application is limited to non-corrosive environments as it has a low corrosion and oxidation resistance (Andren, 2001). Nickel (Ni) may also be used as a binder, and has been shown to have superior oxidation and corrosion resistance, but in some applications may not have the required mechanical properties (Kim et al., 2006)."

A principal requirement in the design of a backfill transportation pipeline is the accurate prediction of the values of key slurry flow parameters. Input variables, such as particle size and solids concentration, are usually determined by the load-bearing requirements of the placed fill. It is therefore necessary to identify the optimum conditions of transport for a particular combination of input variables. This paper critically reviews the methods available to predict the values of flow parameters in slurry pipeline systems in the light of experimental data generated at a test facility. Particular reference is made to rod milled waste and deslimed tailings transport systems and, in the case of the former, it is shown that both pumping and load-bearing requirements can be optimized.

Recent experience has shown that all underground workplaces in the Campine Coalfield in Belgium will require controlled cooling within three years. Considering the socio-economic and legal importance of the climatic problems underground, IREA has undertaken studies in forecasting the climate of future workplaces, planning the necessary cooling equipment and optimizing efficiency in the existing cooling equipment. These studies are being carried out using the climate forecasting program of Bergbau-Forschung. So far, the German model has been obliged to utilize manually measured data from a few workplaces in the Campine. As the model does not fit very well with these measurements, it has been thought necessary to' develop a system of continuous data acquisition and transmission. This system is being tested in the Beringen mine of the N.V. Kempense Steenkollenmijnen. In the first part of this paper the digital tranmission system is described; in the second the sensors used to collect the necessary climatic data are presented, and in the third some results are given.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

In November 2009 Mintek installed the FloatStar? advanced flotation stabilization system on Vale's Cauê iron ore beneficiation plant in Brazil. In September 2010 the system was upgraded to include flotation optimization. The circuit consisted of two parallel cleaner circuits producing final concentrate. The tailings from the cleaner section passed through a scavenger circuit. Large, well-instrumented feed sumps played an important role in circuit stability, presenting a good opportunity for advanced control. Previously the plant was controlled using distributed control system (DCS) level control only. The flotation circuit processes roughly 30kt/day. The FloatStar system provided advanced control of the flotation circuit as well as of the sumps feeding the circuit. The system underwent a lengthy trial to assess the benefit that it provided. Two data sets were analysed, showing performance under advanced stabilization and optimization respectively. Several validation and consistency criteria were employed to ensure the quality of the analysis. Iron recovery and iron tailings grade were used to measure system performance. The analysis showed that the system increased recovery by up to 2.7%. In addition, the system decreased the iron tailings grade by between 1.2% (from 23.5% to 22.3%) and 4.3% (from 31.3% to 27.0%) during different test campaigns. The analysis also showed that the entire FloatStar stabilization system was active for 72.7% of the time from first activation to the end of the first data set (approximately 200 days). From the analysis it was concluded that under similar conditions for 'ON' and 'OFF' tests, the system provides a clear benefit. It was also found that over the longer term, the system continues to provide a benefit. This finding suggests that the results were not simply due to a short-term advantage. The size of the data set, as well as the magnitude of the recovery improvements, lends considerable confidence to these results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the FloatStar control system provides substantial benefit to operations at this site.

Reinforcement and surface support are part of an integrated system that transfers and shares loaduntil the excavation surface is stabilized or until the ground support system fails. Steel mesh is the most popular primary surface support element in underground hard rock mines in Canada. Mesh straps are a secondary surface support that provide additional containment as they distribute the load between and across the reinforcement elements. This investigation addresses the role of steel properties, and in particular steel chemistry, in the long-term performance of mesh and mesh straps when exposed to an aggressive corrosive environment. It reports on comparative accelerated corrosion studies to compare the resistance to corrosion of different surface support elements. This has significant implications on the choice of surface support and the anticipated rehabilitation requirements.

"The effect of particle size on the flotation kinetics of a low-rank coal was compared using air bubbles and oily bubbles. Five kinetic models were applied to the data from the tests to derive the relationships between the flotation rate constant, the ultimate recovery, and the particle size fraction. The results show that oily bubble flotation (OBF) resulted in a lower ash content and higher combustible recovery than air bubble flotation (ABF), especially for the -125 ??m size fraction. It was found that the flotation of a low-rank coal in individual size fractions using air bubbles and oily bubbles can be best described by a first-order model with rectangular distribution of tendency to float and the classical first-order model respectively. OBF yielded higher ultimate combustible and ultimate ash recoveries. The flotation rate constants for OBF were higher in all the models except for the fully mixed reactor model. The ultimate recovery values and modified rate constants first increased and then decreased as the size fraction decreased. The trend of the flotation rate constants as a function of the size fraction was similar in all the models except for the fully mixed reactor model. IntroductionFroth flotation is a physical-chemical separation method that is widely used in coal beneficiation for the separation of fine coal particles from associated minerals in water slurries. Since the cumulative recovery of a component in the concentrate is proportional to flotation time, the flotation process can be considered as a time-rate recovery process (Emad, Mohammad, and Bahram, 2010). Therefore, the general mathematical flotation models that incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can describe flotation time recovery profiles.The kinetics of coal flotation, as a measure of coal recovery as a function of time, have been studied in detail by many researchers. Different kinetic models have been proposed and published in the literature. The order and the rate constant are strongly dependent on the flotation conditions, such as the particle size and size distribution, the bubble concentration, the reagent concentrations, and the operating parameters (Zhang et al., 2013). The particle size has been reported to affect the flotation kinetics to a great extent (Yoon, Luttrell, and Asmatulu, 2002; Ntengwe and Witika, 2011). Numerous researchers have studied the aspects of flotation kinetics while paying special attention to particle size (Meftuni and Ibrahim, 1997; Rubinstein and Samygin, 1998; Graeme, 2012). However, the effect of particle size on the flotation kinetics of a low-rank coal has been relatively little discussed."

In this study, the effects of heat treatment on phase formation and surface morphology of the Cr-Pt coated system are investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The CrPt andCr4Pt (Cr3Pt - A15 type) phases were formed after heat treatment of the coated samples. Heat treating at 1000°C renders a distinct island coating morphology that is non-continuous in nature. A diffusional model is proposed for this coated system with regards to the surface morphology formation after heat treatment.

Bioleaching, one of the several important processes of biohydrometallurgy is an accepted technique for the extraction of desired metals from sulphide ores. Although the mechanism is well understood, the slow metal extraction rate due to passivating layer and ferric ion precipitation, especially in a typical chalcopyrite leaching, impact negatively on the overall efficiency of the process. Iron precipitates are common in many biohydrometallurgical operations and these precipitates represent the exit route for undesired iron, alkali ions or sulphate ion from the processing circuit. While there have been reports on approaches to slow the formation of these precipitates by manipulation of various operating conditions such as pH, redox potential and temperature, the precipitates become highly significant over the long term in the continuous operation of bioleaching and may render heap impermeable. Although there is evidence supporting the nature of the passivation to be precipitates of iron, their scavenging mode of reducing extraction efficiency is still not well understood. This paper thus discusses iron precipitation in biohydrometallurgical processes, including its formation and significance on bioleach processes. The paper also details the associated passivating species identified with heap bioleaching of sulphide minerals and provides some insight into sorption mechanism that limits metal recovery in a typical bioleach operation. The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore bodies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

The application of the Monte Carlo technique to production planning and everyday economic decisionmaking in mine production management is demonstrated. The logic is detailed using an example of underground production with continuous miners (CMs) and truck haulage. It is argued that availability of equipment and personnel are the predominant variables influencing mine output and productivity and that those availabilities may be well represented by binomial probability distributions. The probabilistic model is implemented in a standard Excel® spreadsheet with Palisade’s @Risk add-on to facilitate simulations. Starting from model calibration against data obtained from a mine’s annual reports, some general interdependencies of availability, utilization, productivity, and costs of production processes are outlined. Finally, several possible options and their consequences as regards production improvements are explored.

"X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has become the preferred recovery technology option in several parts of the diamond-winning flow sheet. In the De Beers Group, applications of XRT are found across kimberlite, alluvial, and marine operations. This is the result of intensive R&D conducted over the years to arrive at a suite of machine embodiments capable of sorting and auditing diamonds across all size ranges.The first applications in the marine environment used the technology in an auditing mode, and served as a useful early predictor of diamond content weeks ahead of sorthouse returns. The same machines are now available with ejection capability to produce high final product grades. The next application was tests on coarse alluvial gravels as an alternative to dense medium separation. The results were very encouraging, and tests are planned for both green- and brownfield kimberlite environments, as well as to explore an alternative to conventional techniques in final diamond recovery. At the Jwaneng mine Large Diamond Pilot Plant (LDPP), the objective is to recover diamonds in the size fraction –45 +25 mm.The technical challenge remains in the finer sizes, for high-capacitymachines as direct alternatives to conventional diamond recovery technologies. This is an area of ongoing R&D and it is only a matter of time before the breakthrough emerges. X-ray transmission fundementalsXRT makes use of X-ray imaging techniques to analyse objects and materials, and has a wide range of applications from baggage scanning for security purposes (Martz et al., 2016), to recycling of waste material (Owada, 2014). During the last decade XRT has been applied to an increasing extent in the minerals processing industry (von Ketelhodt and Bergmann, 2010; Sasman, Deetlefs, and van der Westhuyzen, 2018). Dual-energy XRT (DE-XRT), in which images of the target material are obtained at both high and low Xray energies, allows for elemental analysis and therefore can be used to discriminate between various minerals.A DE-XRT system makes use of a dualenergy X-ray line scan sensor to generate images of transmitted X-rays (Figure 1). Dualenergy refers to the camera, which contains two sensors, one responding to low-energy Xrays and one to high-energy X-rays. Feed material can be imaged either while on the belt, or while in flight."

"SynopsisThis study proposes a methodology for evaluating the risk of coal bumps in multiple-seam longwall mining. Both the stress field and the total energy release (TER) during retreat were evaluated in the specified case involving multiple-seam mining using the LaModel program. The results of numerical simulations indicated that both the peak vertical stresses on the panel edges and the peak TERs in the outby longwalls increased significantly as the horizontal offsets were reduced from 60 m to zero. With the comprehensive consideration of the stress field and TERs, a conservative offset of 60 m was ultimately adopted when developing the gateroads of the lower panel in the field. The field measurements indicated that coal bumps were avoided completely by employing the proposed design, and the maximum roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib convergences of the tailgate during retreat were only 360 mm and 576 mm, respectively.IntroductionCoal bumps – sudden, violent bursts of coal – pose a serious threat to the safe excavation of coal. Their occurrence depends on the properties of the surrounding rocks, stress field, and dynamic disturbance. The complexity of the mechanism of coal bumps is further enhanced in multiple-seam mining due to seam interaction. Multiple-seam mining is most frequently found in the coalfields in eastern China, such as Xuzhou, Xinwen, Zaozhuang, and Huainan. In the past, due to issues of availability, economics, and ignorance of the potential risk in multipleseam mining, coal seams in such conditions were mined without proper planning to account for seam interaction. Fortunately, studies published over the past three decades have raised awareness of the problems associated with multiple-seam mining, and indicated that the ground control issues induced by multiple-seam mining can be avoided and/or minimized with proper planning.A number of technical studies pertaining to the design of multiple-seam mines have been published. These studies can be divided into two groups based on their methodologies of design: empirical (Chekan and Listak, 1993; Haycocks and Zhou, 1990, Matetic et al.; 1987a, 1987b) and numerical approaches (Li et al., 2000; Maleki, 2007; Mark, 2007; Peng, 2007; Zipf, 2005). The majority of the extant studies on the interaction mechanisms in multiple-seam mining have focused on the load transfer during operation, resulting in the proposal of the pressure bulb theory (Forrest et al., 1987; Haycocks and Karmis, 1983; Peng, 2008; Peng and Chandra, 1980) and pressure arch theory (Holland, 1973; Oram and Ponder, 1997) to guide multiple-seam mine design. However, neither, of these theories can be used to evaluate the potential for coal bumps."

"Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability.
