The Annual General Meeting of the Branch was held in the Witbank Golf Club on Thursday, 28th August, 1969 at 5.00 p.m. Mr C. G. Sowry (Chairman) was in the Chair. There were also present: Ten Members: Messrs J. Meintjes (Vice-Chairman), J. E. van Aswegen, A. C. Hofmeyr, I. Botha, B. F. v. d. Merwe, C. H. Coxon, R. Canny, R. C. J. Goode, A. Bain, G. E. Carlyon. Six Associate Members: Messrs B. T. Hosking, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, T. Bulloch, E. J. Jackson, P. J. Muller. Fourteen Visitors. Total Present: 31. The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers' Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Brereton, G. E. Carlyon, B. T. Hosking, E. J. Jackson, B. D. McNeice, P. J. Muller, B. F. van der Merwe. TALK The Chairman then called upon Mr A. Bain to present his talk and film show on 'Impressions of the mining and metallurgy congress tour to Australasia'. CLOSURE After thanking the speaker for an interesting talk, the Chairman declared the Meeting closed at 8.40 p.m.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. Product designed characteristics like reliability and maintainability affect maintenance cost, service performance, and therefore product support strategy must be defined during design stage in terms of these two dimensions. Furthermore product support and service delivery strategy has considerable influence on the total life cycle cost and the economic viability of industrial systems/products. he paper presents a concept for the development of service delivery strategy for industrial products with a special reference to mining systems. In this paper we emphasize that the strategy for product support should not be centred only on ‘product’ but it should also take into account the service delivery capability of the manufacturers/suppliers and users service organization, users competence and capability, product use location, logistics and infrastructures, etc., to arrive at the best performance and economic results. Such strategy should invariably include services supporting the client apart from considering services supporting the product. The discussion in the paper is based on the experiences from the manufacturing industry engaged in manufacturing of mining systems and the observed trends in technology and management of operation and maintenance of mining systems. The optimization of sample spacing In South African gold mines by J. M. RENDU*, Eng. Se.D., M.S. (Min.) U.S.A. (Graduate Member) A first attempt is made at optimization of sample spacing in South African gold mines. The De Wijs model, which is shown to give a good representation of the geostatistical properties of gold values, is used to analyse the influence of the distance between samples along a stope face on the error of estimation of the stope value. The influence of other factors such as the face advance before resampling, the sample density, and the stope size, is also considered. Practical conclusions are drawn concerning the optimum sampling policy to be followed in various situations, and it is shown that sampling on a regular grid does not necessarily give the best results.

A new methodology is proposed for the preliminary assessment of coal blend quality, which combines gamma-ray spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This methodology does not replacethe conventional methods of assessing coal quality, but can help to control the quality of the coal blending process, as well as reduce the amount of proximate analysis required and the determinations of calorific value and total sulphur. The methodology includes five steps. First, both geophysical measurements aremade with handheld equipment. The samples with magnetic susceptibility ≤ 1 × 10-3 SI are then separated. From these samples, those with total gamma intensity ≤ 20 nGy/h are separated. These samples have a higher calorific value and lower ash and moisture content. To separate the samples of better quality and with lower total sulphur content, in step four the samples with total gamma intensity > 20 nGy/h are separated from those with magnetic susceptibility ≤ 1 × 10-3 SI. This last group includes samplesthat will cause less total sulphur-related environmental pollution. In the final step, the quality of both radioactive sample groups is corroborated from the calorific value measurement and ash, moisture, andtotal sulphur contents in at least 10% of all coal blend samples from both groups. In this study, more than1000 samples were analysed with this new methodology, and the results are remarkably similar to the ASTM classification of the Sabinas Basin coals.

This study investigates the use of appropriate seating systems for the control of whole-body vibration exposure in vehicles used in the SA mining industry. Six suspension seats were tested with six test subjects to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck based on the EM1 requirement in ISO 7096 (2000) standards. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory using the newly commissioned Dynamic Seat Testing Facility with two excitation levels of 1m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5 - 30 Hz frequency range. SEAT values were calculated for two input spectrums, the EM1 input spectrum specified as in ISO 7096:2000 and measured road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. The averaged SEAT value calculations indicated that not one of the seats will qualify as an ISO 7096 (2000) suspension seat but that it is possible to select a seat that will significantly reduce the vibration the driver will be exposed to.

In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article thefollowing hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the of chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

Primary lead production using the lead blast furnace in conventional practice is carried out using sinter feed. At YMG, China, the sinter plant has been replaced with a lead ISASMELT furnace. The ISASMELT furnace produces lead bullion plus a high-lead slag, which is cast into lumps to provide a suitable feed for the blast furnace. In the present study the relative microstructures and reduction characteristics of industrial lead sinters and synthetic ISASMELT slag in CO/CO2 gas mixtures have been measured and compared. The microstructure and property changes, and the mechanisms of reduction in each case are examined and discussed. The results of the study are used to explain the successful implementation of cast slag feed in commercial ISASMELT- lead blast furnace practice. Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

Mineral sand beneficiation plants comprise a complex combination of electrostatic, magnetic and gravity based separation techniques. These are combined and replicated in ways that provide the most efficient and cost effective separation of the valuable components. On line instrumentation has been developed at the JKMRC (eg. conductor/non-conductor(CNC) ) to measure the properties of the dry plant process streams. This paper provides results from the recent development of a novel low cost mass flow meter and discusses their combined use with the CNC instrumentation for the control of dry separation circuits.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. The uranium production forecasting program described in this paper projects production from Reasonably Assured, Estimated Additional and Speculative Resources in the cost categories of less than $130/kg U. Originally designed to handle South African production, it has been expanded and redimensioned using available published information to forecast production for countries of the Western World. The program forecasts production from up to 400 plants over a period of fifty years and has built-in production models derived from documented historical data of the more important uranium provinces. It is particularly suitable to assess production cavabilities on a national and global scale where variations in outputs for the individual plants tend to even out. The program is aimed at putting the uranium potential of any one country into a realistic perspective, and it could thus be useful for planning purposes and marketing strategies.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. Copies of the report are available to organizations within member countries of ICCR at a cost of 35 dollars (Australian), including postage, by application to the Executive Officer, Third ICCR, Box 3842 GPO Sydney, Australia 2001. A procedure for designing an optimum pit to yield maximum profit is described. The volume in which a possible pit is considered is divided into discrete blocks, each of which is assigned an economic value equivalent to its worth as a block of mineable material. The profitability of a pit can then be generated by summing the blocks within the pit. The optimizing procedure starts at the surface level and proceeds downwards level by level, to obtain the optimum pit at each level. The method makes use of the fact that an optimum pit at a particular level must be completely contained in any optimum pit at a lower level. Procedures for generating block costs, and pits with various slope angles under the restriction of complete block removal are considered briefly. The main description is of the theory of the method and the computer program based on this. The method is applicable to any type of mineral deposit, the only requirement being that the orebody should be represented accurately by a block model.

The paper presents the comments on the advantages of implementing an integrated system of managing mining exploitation in hard coal mines, as well as the comprehensive integration of information on the process of deposit exploitation with economic data, so as to achieve an optimum technical and economic effects. The principles of constructing the production management system have been presented, thanks to which the management boards are provided with reliable technical and economic information on a mining company via information technology. The strategic direction of a company’s operation may currently be verified according to the external conditions that change over time (the information on the deposit, force majeure events, changing expectations of customers, etc.).

The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. A number of base-metal operations would like to increase production to take advantage of the higher metals prices. In general, this higher production should not be achieved with major operating changes. In hydrometallurgical facilities, leaching and pressure leaching represents one area where upfront limitations may be a bottleneck to the capacity of the entire plant. An assessment of the capacity of the leaching tanks and autoclaves was performed using a predictive model within the AweSym flowsheet simulator. The model is described, and the results of the application of the model to a number of different leaching reactors are presented. It is argued that the leaching number, which relates the residence time, particle size and the leaching rate, is of prime importance. Finally it is shown that there are some unexpected catastrophic events in increasing production capacity without a thorough understanding of the leaching operation.
