[Thermodynamic properties of two amphibole asbestos minerals were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpies of formation were determined by the hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry method. Heat capacity measurements were made with an adiabatic calorimeter over the range of 5 to 315 K. High-temperature enthalpies above 298 K were determined with a copper-block drop calorimeter to 852 K for amosite and to 902 K for crocidolite. Thermodynamic data determined for amosite of the composition Fe5+2.2766Mg1.5209 Fe+03.12Mn0.0825) Si7.9163Al0.0837022.0363)(OH)1.9637 are: S°298 = 168.8 ± 5 cal/deg-mole; ?Hf°298-15 (elements) = -2419.24 ± 2.95 kcal/mole; ?Hf298.15 (oxides) = -30.92 ± 2.47 kcal/mole; and ?Gf° -2260.1 kcal. Corresponding data found for s3 ,1s = crocidolite of the composition (Na1.9Ca0.1)(Fe2+.024Fe2.5 01Mg0.475) (Si7.9713024Fe+2 2.501Mg0.475) (Si7.971 Al0.029022.095) (OH)1.905 are: S2.98-15 - 161.1 ± 4 cal/deg-mole; ?Rf° 2 298.15 (elements) = -2433.56 ± 2.99 kcal/mole, 10298.1s (oxides) = -87.69 1.70 kcal/mole, and ?Gf°298.15 = -2269.8 kcal.] Calorimetric values from this investigation were combined with other data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of the measurements. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature both from the elements and the constituent oxides.

The extrapolation of results from reconstructed laboratory soil columns to field conditions is difficult because of the limitations of laboratory experiments. Permeability and elution tests performed in the laboratory differed from the natural state in that the soil was sieved through 1/4 inch screen to remove large stones and roots, its density was controlled by tamping the soil into two-inch I.D. tubes instead of normal weathering, and water and latex were applied with a constant head of liquid. Tube wall effects are important in interpreting data. Conversely, interpretation of field results were confounded by non-homogeneities within the sample tested, a soil profile with gradation of permeability and density with depth, and uncontrolled weather conditions and seasonal changes that affected the results. Nevertheless, both laboratory and field tests showed that a specific latex did perform as a soil sealant. In view of these facts a soil box experiment was designed to overcome some of the disadvantages associated with the small laboratory soil columns and the field experiments. Two wood soil boxes 5 ft x 5 ft x 5 ft were built in the greenhouse at the Uniroyal Research Center. They were lined with plastic PVC sheeting provided with tubes every six inches of depth on one side of each box to measure water removal rates under saturated conditions. Tensiometer gauges were placed at depths of 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48 inches and Bouyoucos blocs and resistance thermometers were positioned at 6, 24 and 48 inch depths. Each box was filled with a uniform sub-soil obtained from Ogdensburg, N. J. The texture of this soil was determined to be a sandy loam by the ASTM Hydrometer method, as shown below: [ ] The boxes were thoroughly wetted by sprinkling to abet settling and allowed to dry by draining to check seepage ports and functioning of tensiometers.

"While control of dust-related diseases, the objective of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust, is of prime importance from the human standpoint it is also essential to the economic well-being of the mining industry (FIGURE 23). Although significant progress has been made, the problem continues to be a major concern to the mining community. An increasing global demand for coal and other minerals means that production and the number of miners employed is on the rise. Therefore, the importance of this research to the mining industry cannot be overemphasized.The five areas of dust research are 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. Some experimental projects where the research is conducted almost exclusively in the laboratory may still rely on industry for imput. No industrial resources are necessary to the research of the non-experimental projects, for example computer modeling .The remaining research is classified as experimental and these projects do require interaction with industry in varying degrees. Periodic trips to mining sites in Western Pennsylvania, Southern Ohio, and West Virginia are necessary to record measurements or collect samples. Or companies may provide needed samples or equipment to the university for use in the laboratory. On several projects interaction is limited to advice or information supplied to the researcher by industry personnel."

Demand for arsenic trioxide exceeded supply in 1978 and 1979, and the major domestic and foreign producers allocated available supplies to customers. Major demand has been from the cotton-growing and wood-preserving industries. Ample supplies of arsenic metal produced in the United States and Sweden were available in 1978 and 1979. Major demand for metal was from the automobile battery industry in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), promulgated the final standard on the occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic, effective August 1, 1978.2 The need for the standard was a result of OSHA's conclusion that inorganic arsenic is a human carcinogen. The purpose of the standard was to minimize the incidence of lung cancer among workers exposed to inorganic arsenic. The maximum exposure to arsenic was lowered from the previous ceiling of 500 micrograms per cubic meter of air to 10 micrograms per cubic meter over an 8-hour time period. OSHA had originally recommended a ceiling limit of 4 micrograms per cubic meter in January 1975. Provisions of the new standard require exposed employees to wear respirators and undergo continuous medical monitoring. Other provisions establish regulated areas limited to authorized employees and require the construction of special lunch-room and worker hygiene facilities and the posting of signs and labels warning of the presence of arsenic. The new arsenic standard will have a significant economic impact on copper, zinc, gold, and lead smelters as well as consumers of arsenic trioxide. A number of copper companies have joined together to contest the standard in court. However, measures to comply with the standard have been initiated by ASARCO Incorporated at its Tacoma, Wash. plant.

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. "Explosive gas mixtures are characterized by their ability to undergo a self-accelerating reaction that may culminate in ignition. In the case of methane and air there are two interdependent causes of this acceleration. First, if a sufficiently fast reaction is induced, heat may be evolved faster than it is lost to the surroundings; consequently, the temperature rises and the reaction rate increases. Second, the reaction rate is determined not only by temperature but by the concentration of reactive intermediate products if the latter increases during the course of the reaction the rate will increase. To understand the role of these active intermediates, it should be realized that molecules of methane and oxygen, per se, show little tendency to react with each other even at high temperatures.(1) If, however, free radicals like OH and CH3, are present in the mixture, the methane and oxygen are attacked in the reactions(2):In these reactions the radicals are regenerated, and thus a chain of reactions is set up by an individual radical or chain carrier which is broken only if the latter is destroyed in some process. Not all collisions of a chain carrier with CH4 or 02 result in reaction, since one requirement for a successful collision is that the colliding particles have a certain minimum energy. The percentage of collisions in which this energy condition is fulfilled increases with temperature, so that for equal chain-breaking probabilities the length of the reaction chain increases with increasing temperature. Thus, there exists an interplay of temperature and concentration of chain carriers that determines the reaction rate. To carry the rate to the stage of self-acceleration, higher temperatures are required for lower than for higher chain-carrier concentrations, other conditions being equal."

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. "Under existing conditions in the treatment of oxidized lead ores containing small quantities of molybdenum no provision is made for the recovery of the molybdenum. Considerable quantities of this important element are lost in the slags of the lead smelters and constitute an economic waste. There is little or no probability that slag dumps containing molybdenum in small quantities could be economically treated for the recovery of the element, and steps for the prevention of waste in this respect must be taken prior to smelter treatment.Wulfenite, lead molybdate (PbMo04), and molybdite, molybdic ocher (Mo03), are the molybdenum minerals most abundantly found in deposits of oxidized lead ores. Wulfenite contains 39.3 per cent molybdenum trioxide and 60.7 per cent lead oxide; molybdite contains 66.7 per cent molybdenum and 33.3 per cent oxygen. Plumbojarosite, argentojarosite, cerussite, and occasionally anglesite are commonly associated with wulfenite ores, and the oxidized iron content is usually fairly high.The recent discovery and development of a body of wulfenite ore in the Star district near Milford led to a cursory microscopic examination of samples of the ore, followed by a few preliminary tests which had for their object the separation and recovery of the lead and molybdenum in separate products.The microscopic examination showed that the samples used in the work were composed of wulfenite, plumbojarosite, and a small quantity of cerussite, and indicated that the iron content was quite high. The ore was porous and yellowish-brown; crystals of wulfenite appeared to be quite uniformly distributed through it, and this mineral and plumbojarosite (Pb0.3Fe203.4S03.6H20) apparently accounted for the major part of the lead content, although lead"

The Bureau of Mines is developing a method to recover Ni, Co, and Cu from laterites containing less than 1.2 pct Ni and 0.25 pct Co. The method consists of the following basic unit operations: (1) reduction roasting, (2) leaching, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. The method reflects three Bureau of Mines objectives: (1) recovery of critical minerals that are domestically in short supply from low-grade domestic laterites, (2) lower processing energy requirements, and (3) solution recycling. This report deals with the extraction of cobalt and the preparation of a suitable cobalt electrolyte by solvent extraction from liquor produced by this method. Nickel and copper are coextracted with LIX64N from an ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor containing about 1.00 g/l Ni, 0.30 g/l Co, 0.03 g/l Cu, and 0.02 g/l Zn. Cobalt (III) in the nickel-copper barren raffinate is reduced to cobalt (II) with cobalt metal. Reduction of cobalt (III) to cobalt (II) greatly aids subsequent extraction. Commercially available XI-51 extracts about 94 pct of the cobalt from the treated raffinate in one stage in a laboratory mixer-settler continuous circuit. Ammonia loaded on the solvent is removed in two washing steps. About 94 pct of the cobalt then is stripped from the XI-51 in one stage with spent cobalt electrolyte containing about 77 g/l Co and 18 g/l sulfuric acid (H2S04), Electrolytes containing less H2S04 also may be used. Preliminary data indicate that coextracted zinc may be removed from pregnant cobalt eletrolyte containing 3 g/l or less H2S04 with di-(2 ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA).

The method of mining bituminous coal in Pennsylvania cannot be treated in an extended manner in this publication since this would require more space than justified. The general plan of operation of most mines is on the room and pillar system, using double entries from which the rooms are driven In the early mining in the Pittsburgh coal bed the "checkerboard" plan was much used, but this entailed a large loss of coal in the blocks of coal that were left standing. In recent years there has been a tendency towards the adoptions of the panel, room and pillar method, also the block system, which ad mats of concentrated mining within a relatively small section of the mine It is not unusual to use 4, 6, or 8 parallel entries for the panel development. The longwall advancing method has been tried in some of the thin beds of the central coal field, but so far it has not passed beyond the experimental stage. The average extraction' of coal throughout the State is 714 per cent, but it is estimated that 15 5 per cent of the loss is avoidable, so the actual extraction should approximate 87 per cent. Pennsylvania is exceptionally well provided with means of transportation by trunk lines, branches, and by intra State railroads, among which are the Pennsylvania, Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central, Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh, Western Maryland, Bessemer & Lake Erie, Pittsburgh & West Virginia, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, Erie, Monongahela Division, and Montour railroads, all of which reach some of the bituminous mines The Monongahela River furnishes water transportation for Allegheny, Greene, Fayette, and Washington counties During 1923 the coal traffic on this river amounted to 18,709,084 tons, and of coke, 385,426 tons Coal is moved on the Allegheny River also, the total in 1923 being 911,178 tons s.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies related to SO2 air pollution to determine attritioning rates, SO2 sorption rates, and sulfur loads that could be obtained on commercial alkalized alumina sorbent pellets. Fluidized-bed attritioning rates ranged from 0.025 pct/hr for alkalized alumina with a crushing strength of 4 kg to 0.075 pct/hr for 0.5 kg crushing strength mate¬rial. Airlift attritioning rates ranged from 0.50 pct/hr for 3 kg crushing strength alkalized alumina to about 3 pct/hr for 0.5 kg material. Attritioning rates for the commercial alkalized alumina were comparable to those obtained for sorbent pellets prepared in the Bureau of Mines laboratory. Sorption rates were related to S02 concentration in flue gas, temperature, and presence of nitrogen oxides in the gas stream. Sorption rates at 300° C were 0.35 X 10-6 gS/gp/sec (grams sulfur per gram pellet per second) in 0.045 pct so, gas, 5.1 x 10-5 gS/gp/sec in 0.34 pct SO2 gas, and 65 X 10-5 gS/gp/sec in 10 pct SO2 gas. For the 0.34 pct S02 gas, sulfur loads of 0.10 gS/gp (the projected load for regeneration) were obtained in 47 min at 130° C and in 116 min at 300° C. The presence of either NO or NO2 in the 0.34 pet S02 gas increased the SO2 sorption rates 2 to 3 times at 300° C, but had no effect at 130° C.

Research conducted by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of preparing columbium and tantalum metals by the application of Kroll-process techniques. Yields in excess of 95 percent were obtained in a modified Kroll-process reduction apparatus constructed from nickel and Inconel.4 Operating conditions during reduction and distillation were determined. Optimum temperatures during sodium reductions ranged from 650° to 750° C and for magnesium from 700° to 800° C with retort pressures ranging from 3 to 7 psig. Undesirable vapor phase reactions occurred when temperatures exceeded 750° C during sodium reductions or 850° C with magnesium. Vacuum distillation at 850° C effectively removed volatile salts and excess reductant from the reduced metals. Calculations based on the results obtained in small scale tests indicate that reaction rates of up to 34 lb/hr could be obtained during columbium reductions and up to 60 lb/hr during tantalum reductions in production scale reac¬tors. The small, laboratory-scale techniques used in this study could be adapted to commercial practice. The reduced powder or sponge metals can be consolidated by conventional arc-melting techniques, and the arc-melted metals can be fabricated into ductile sheet at room temperature. Analyses of arc-melted buttons prepared from Kroll-process tantalum or columbium showed that tantalum of greater than 99.8-percent purity was obtained and that columbium purity exceeded 99.7 percent. A significant purification of the reduced metals occurred when they were consolidated by electron-beam melting, and the purity and ductility of electron-beam-melted Kroll-process tantalum and columbium compared favorably with the commercial metals. After electron-beam melting, the purity of the tantalum exceeded 99.95 percent, and columbium purity was approximately 99.9 percent.

"INTRODUCTION The underground mine of the Miami Copper Co. has operated since 1927 without a fatality from blasting or the handling of explosives. To improve safety and efficiency, electrical blasting has been used exclusively since 1934. During the period January 1, 1934, to December 31, 1948, inclusive, over 4,000 tons of explosives were used to produce 60,925,071 tons of ore with 896,760 feet of development footage and 2,591,788 square feet of undercut area.The purpose of this paper is to recount the company's precautions to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation, where safety involves careful planning rather than ""trial and error.""GENERAL INFORMATIONThe Miami Copper Co. operates on underground mine in a large, low-grade, Porphyry copper deposit near Miami, Ariz. The deposit contains numerous fractures and planes of weakness, which contribute to ease of working the ore bodies by the block-caving method of mining.An individual stope-caving method is used with stoles 150 feet by 200 to 300 feet and 30- to 50-foot pillars between stapes. After the stope is undercut, the ore is drawn through the draw raises on the grizzly level, and thence through the transfer raises to the ore chutes on the haulage level.Access to the mine is by four active shafts, three of which are primarily for ventilation. No. 5 shaft is used for both hoisting and service. There are four operating levels in the mine. The elevations of the grizzly levels are governed by the contour of the bottom of the ore body and therefore vary in different locations in, the mine.Grizzly levels are on the 850, 900, and 975 levels. The 1,000 level is the haulage level. This mine operates in very low-grade ore and requires economical handling of large tonnages safely and efficiently."

Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for coal preparation plants by state during 1990-1999. Table 28 also shows the risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by state. For coal preparation plants, 91 fires occurred in 1 1 states during 1990- 1999. Twenty-three of those fires caused 25 injuries (the yearly average was 9.1 fires and 2.5 injuries). Ten fires and eight injuries involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 24 1 x 10' hr (Irr = 0.02 l), and the LWD value was 198. Pennsylvania had the most fires (24 fires and 4 injuries), whereas West Virginia (22 fires and 7 injuries) and Kentucky (22 fires and 7 injuries) had the most fire injuries. Among these states, Kentucky had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.025). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires decreased during most of the periods (an increase is seen only during the last period). The number of fire injuries show a decrease followed by an increase during the periods, accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours throughout the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values (see table 29 and figure 11). Tables 30-35 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 12 shows the major variables during 1990-1999. Table 36 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Table 8 provides data for the estimated value of world export trade of all mineral commodities from 1980 through 1991. It also provides a breakdown of the total into mineral fuels and non fuel minerals. These data have been developed from UN export trade data presented in table 9. The percent distribution and growth of the value of world export by major commodity groups are presented in tables 9, 10, and 11, respectively. In terms of industrial minerals (nonmetals), data in tables 10 and 11 include crude industrial minerals only, while table 8 includes an estimate for other industrial minerals. The 1991 estimates that appeared in the 1991 issues of this publication have been revised. It is typical for this section to review the year prior to the year of review because of the unavailability of data at the time of publication. The aggregated value of export trade in mineral commodities for 1992 was not available at the time of publication. The total value of nonfuel and fuel mineral exports for 1991 was about $616 billion in current (1991) dollars. The value of mineral fuel export trade accounted for about 53 % of the total mineral export trade. In 1980, the contribution of mineral fuel to the value of mineral commodity export trade had been almost 68%. The 1991 world mineral commodity export trade represents a 5.3% decrease (table 8) from that of 1990. The largest decrease was attributed to the decrease of export trade of fuel minerals (5%). The value of non fuel mineral export trade decreased by 4 %. Because the value export trade of all commodities increased by 1.2 %, the share of mineral commodities decreased from 19.2 % to 17.9 % of the total.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out exploratory laboratoryscale studies to identify factors that may contribute to nitrogen oxides (NOx) production associated with non-ideal detonation of blasting agents. Explosive admixture with drill cuttings, loss of fuel oil in ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) from wicking, ammonium nitrate dissolution with water, degree of explosive confinement, ANFO density, and critical diameter were identified as contributing factors to increased NOx production under the laboratory test conditions. Experiments were also conducted to examine the effectiveness of various additives in reducing the NOx production from ANFO, emulsion, and ANFO/emulsion blends. Aluminum powder, coal dust, urea, and excess fuel oil in ANFO formulations were tested and were found to reduce both the nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) production. Fumes measurements were obtained in the NIOSH underground closed chamber from the detonation of 4.5-kg (10 lbs) charges in schedule 80 seamless steel pipe and from detonations in light weight galvanized steel stove pipe. Some exploratory tests were also conducted with 0.8-kg (1.8 lbs) charges of pulverized ANFO initiated with 0.08-kg (0.18 lbs), 50/50 (Pentolite) boosters (in the NIOSH 12-ft (3.7-m) diameter steel sphere) to measure the degree of fumes production associated with post-detonation oxidation. Ammonium nitrate, emulsion and Pentolite boosters were also detonated in an oxygen-poor environment.

The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1989 was nearly $1,420 billion in terms of current dollars or more than $1,168 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was almost 4.7% above the 1988 level but did not attain the historic high of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. The accompanying tabulation provides the latest available revised time series for the value of world crude mineral production in terms of both constant 1983 dollars and current dollars. It also provides one of the two statistical bases for the estimation, this being the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was compiled for and published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical Annales des Mines for years up to 1983.l It should be stressed that the values just discussed and those presented in the tabulation are for crude minerals only and by no means reflect adequately the role of the entire mineral industry in the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of [ ] the total value of processed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,800 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,400 billion in terms of 1989 dollars.
