Due mainly to conditions brought about by the war , the metal mining industry in this country is now passing through one of the most critical stages in its history , and is confronted by new problems upon the solution and adjustment of which depends , in a large measure , its future welfare and prosperity . The chief factors contributing to the cost of production are the cost of labor and supplies . It is conceded by our leading mine operators , managers , and engineers that any material reduction in the cost of labor or supplies , within possibly the next two or three years , cannot be anticipated , anl it is not thought likely that pre - war prices will ever again prevail . This being true , the mine operator must look in some cther direction to effect economies that will lower production costs . If this cannot be accomplished it will mean , in many instances , that mines and metallurgical works will have to be closed and abandoned , which will tend to disorganize the entire industry . How to lower production costs and still maintain the present high standard of wage , is the problem that is engaging the serious attention of mine operators and managers over the entire country . In As a solution to this problem it is thought that the most promising field of investigation lies in the direction of systematizing and standardizing mining practice , so as to effect economies in the use of both labor and materials . other words , to eliminate , in so far as possible , unproductive effort and waste and thereby secure a maximum of productive results , It is not the idea to speed up work or to demand a greater effort on the part of the workman , but rather so to systematize and standardize the various under ground operations that his energy will be directed into more useful and productive channels ,

The heat capacities of a-quartz form beryllium fluoride were measured at approximately 3° intervals from 8° to 300° K., using an adiabatic calorimeter. At 298.15° K the heat capacity and entropy were 12.39 cal/deg mole and 12.75 ±0.04 eu respectively. Enthalpy measurements were made with an ice calorimeter at approximately 30° intervals on the quartz and glassy forms of beryllium fluoride between 300° and 1,200° K. A melting point of 825° K and an 0,-8 type transition at 500° K with a heat effect of 75 ca1/mole were deter-mined from the enthalpy data for the quartz-type sample. Beryllium fluoride glass crystallized spontaneously into the quartz modification at 500° K. The heat of the reaction BeF2 (a-quartz) .... BeF2 (glass) was found to be 1,125 ±16 cal/mole at 298° K by solution calorimetry. This value, when corrected to 273° K, was used to correct for the heat absorbed by the formation of glassy BeF2 when the sample was dropped into the ice calorimeter from temperatures above the melting point. Using corrected enthalpy measurements, the heat of fusion was determined to be 1.13 kcal/mole at 825° K.

The Bureau of Mines developed a new method for the determination of oxides of nitrogen in diesel exhaust gas. The procedure, a modification of the Saltzman method, uses a NO2 absorbent for the diesel exhaust gas; the colorless absorbent becomes purple on contact with N~. When used properly this procedure gives satisfactory results in 2 hours, whereas the standard phenoldisulfonic acid method required approximately 8 hours. The new method is not satisfactory for determination of oxides of nitrogen in the overrich fuel to air ratio range.

The Bureau of Mines investigated gases from flash and laser irradiation of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal to determine the action of high temperatures on coal. Temperatures in excess of l,000° C were reached with both types of irradiation. Craters about 300 microns in diameter were produced in the coal with millisecond pulses from the laser unit rated at 1.7 joules' output. Gaseous products from laser and flash irradiations in vacuum contained 21 and 8 percent acetylene, respectively. Diacetylene, vinylacetylene, and other products to molecular weight 130 were indicated in the mass spectrum of the gas from the laser study. Single experiments were also conducted in which the laser energy, particle size of the coal, and atmosphere were varied. The results indicated that the distributions of products obtained from the flash and laser irradiations of coal were different from that produced in high-temperature carbonization.

High-purity neodymium, praseodymium, and didymium (a cerium-free mixture of light rare-earth elements) were prepared by electrolysis of the oxides in a medium consisting of the respective rare-earth fluorides and lithium fluoride. The metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state and collected as nodules on a skull of frozen electrolyte. Cells were operated from 1,000° to 1,100° C. The requisite temperature was maintained by passing alternating and direct currents through the bath. Graphite was used for the anodes and tungsten for the cathode. The metal products contained <0.02 percent each carbon and oxygen and <0.025 percent tungsten as major impurities. Analysis of typical didymium metal nodules showed an approximately twofold enrichment in neodymium and praseodymium over their respective concentrations in the cell feed. The lanthanum content of the metal was about one-half its content in the oxide.

An investigation was made to provide further information for evaluating columbium- hafnium alloys for use as high - temperature structural materials . The columbium- hafnium system was investigated between 700 ° and 2,400 ° C by melting point , thermal analysis , X - ray diffraction , electrical resistivity , and metallographic techniques . The equilibrium diagram is the beta isomorphous type , with columbium tending to stabilize the beta phase . Addition of 60 atomic percent columbium stabilizes the beta phase at 700 ° C. The allotropic transformation temperature of hafnium is 1,750 ° ± 20 ° C. A minimum melting point occurs near 75 atomic percent hafnium .

Acid leaching of selected copper sulfide minerals, impure copper sulfide flotation concentrates, and a cement copper precipitate at elevated temperatures and pressures was investigated. Copper extractions of 97 to 99 pct were obtained by leaching chalcopyrite and the flotation concentrates with water under oxidizing conditions at 200° C for 30 to 60 min. In tests with bornite, chalcocite,and cement copper, addition of sulfuric acid or pyrite to the autoclave was required to obtain similar copper extractions. The chemistry of leaching copper minerals was studied. It was determined that different copper sulfides altered to covellite as one step in their dissolution.

Oil shale has been defined as, "a compact, laminated rock of sedimentary origin yielding over 35 percent of ash and containing organic matter that yields oil when distilled but not appreciably when extracted with the ordinary solvents for petroleum." The oil-yielding organic matter in oil shale, commonly called kerogen, decomposes upon application of heat to form bituminous materials that are soluble in organic solvents and may be extracted from the inorganic residue. However, separation usually is accomplished by continuing the heating and thereby cracking the primary bitumens to gas and oil, which distill, leaving a carbonaceous material on the mineral residue. It has been suggested that this conversion takes place only at relatively high temperatures - 750°F or higher. On the other hand, other workers have found that transformation may take place to some extent at temperatures as low as 400°F. In either a solvent extraction or a destructive distillation process for separating organic material from the inorganic portion of oil shale, the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of the oil shale sufficiently to induce a satisfactory rate of conversion of kerogen to oil is important in determining the design of an economical process. Likewise, the quantity of heat recoverable from a spent shale is important in determining the overall heat balance of the process. Published data on the specific heat of American oil shales are meager. Gavin and Sharp present data for two samples of Colorado oil shale, one from near DeBeque and one from Parachute Creek, and for a sample of spent shale over a temperature range of 68°F to 1940°F. McKee and Lydor present data on the specific heat of two samples of oil shale from near DeBeque, Colorado. Additional thermal data on various grades of oil shale over a wider range of temperature are needed in order to apply sound engineering practices to the design of equipment for processing oil shale.

With suitable instrumentation and techniques it is possible to determine the presence of tantalum in columbium to 20 ppm . This paper discusses the selection of X- ray spectrographic instrumentation and describes a technique for accomplishing the low level determination of tantalum . An ion- exchange method of separating tantalum from columbium is also described .

The residues resulting from the retort distillation of zinc ores have from 40 to 75 per cent of the weight of the original ore and contain from 5 to 15 per cent zinc . A rough estimate indicates that approximately 450,000 tons of residues are produced annually in the United States , containing about 36,000 tons of zinc . Besides the current production of residues there are at many smelter sites large accumulations from past operations which are available for treatment if this can be done profitably . In addition to their zinc content the residues contain much unconsumed coal , which has been carbonized during the distillation process , and those from most western ores also contain lead and silver . In this paper is summarized the information obtained in a survey , recently made by the Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , of processes which are in use or which have been suggested for the treatment of retort residues . The complete report of the survey is to be published as a Technical Paper of the Bureau of Mines .

Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

"The manufacture of asbestos paper began commercially about 40 years age but its principal development has taken place during the past twenty-five years. The asbestos used by the ancients, termed amiantus by Pliny was used for winding sheets, tablecloths and other fabrics. It was probably chrysotile fiber and was a woven and not a felted product, and there¬fore is not to be confused with asbestos paper. There are, however, some early references to paper manufacture that are of interest. Pontoppidian, Bishop of Bergen, in his Natural History of Norway, published in 1750, refers to paper made from asbestos found in the parish of Waldens. He states that this paper did not burn when thrown in the fire, but the writing on it totally disappeared. This indicates that the primary ob¬ject was to obtain an indestructible writing paper. About 100 years later, further efforts were made with the same object in view. In 1853, a patent was issued for a process of making paper from a mixture of asbestos and alum. Many experiments were made to manufacture suitable asbestos printing paper. Some such papers contained only about one-third asbestos, the remainder being of combustible material. Such papers would burn, but would leave a white residue which retained its shape and preserved the written characters. On account of the difficulty of obtaining a smooth and even surface, and the tendency for the material to absorb ink like blotting paper, asbestos paper is not well adapted for writing or printing purposes. Other early uses of asbestos paper were for ornamental wall-paper and carpet linings. None of the uses mentioned above have developed to anything of importance in a practical way, but the manufacture of asbestos paper has become a very important industry, and it has found extensive uses in ways that were never dreamed of by the early investigators.It is recorded that the first sheet of asbestos paper made in America was manufactured in 1876 by John Roberts & Son Company, in a mill near Waltham, Mass. The material first used was a long-fibered amphibole asbestos from Italy. About three years later, Canadian fiber was introduced and proved to be very satisfactory. The shorter grades of fiber which would otherwise be wasted were used for the manufacture of paper and board. For several years, the product of this mill was sold through Rice Kendall of Boston, Mass. From 1881 to 1900, the H. W. Johns Company, of New York, took the entire product which was 30C to 700 tons per year. The latter company built their own asbestos paper mill at Brooklyn in 1900. Keasbey & Mattison Company, of Ambler, Pennsylvania, began to manufacture in 1897. Other early manufacturers were: the Asbestos Paper Company, at Baldwinsville, Mass„ and Mr. B. S. Binney, at Shirley, Mass. The number of manufacturers gradually increased until at present asbestos paper is manufactured by the following ten companies:"

The mining ordinance of Costa Rica dates from 1830. In spite of the numerous attempts to enact a new ordinance , it has been so much amended and reamended during the hundred years of its existence either expressly or , more often , by implication , and sometimes by Executive Decrees of which the validity has been called in question - that in most cases no one but a lawyer thoroughly conversant with Costa Rican mining practice could properly advise with reference to it . The present attempt at a digest of these laws is based on the 1929 edition of Bolandi and Johanning - the only source available in Washington . Apparently this edition has no official character , and the editors themselves often made surmises although one would think that definite facts would be available in Costa Rica where it was published .

In this Bureau of Mines study, portions of four acidproof bricks (two red shale and two fireclay) were exposed to 20 wt pct RCI at 900 C for periods of 30 days. Three different techniques were selected to deter-mine volume expansion of these materials after exposure. Linear expansions ranging from about 0.02 to 0.12 pct were noted from Ta pin and dilatometer measurements. The use of strain gages to measure expansions was not successful. The red shale and fireclay brick with the lowest apparent porosities had the lowest expansions. Expansion data obtained by direct measurement of samples exposed for 30-day periods or by dilatometric measurement of autoclaved samples ex-posed for 2 h were comparable. This suggests the use of an accelerated autoclave exposure procedure for determining volume expansion effects of ceramic materials in acid environments.

"Electron spin resonance measurements provide evidence for the formation of long-lived Cr(V) intermediates in the reduction of Cr(Vl) by glutathione redtuctase in the presence of NADPH and for the hydroxyl radical formation during the glutathione reductase catalyzed reduction of Cr(Vl). Hydrogen peroxide suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Thus Cr(V) intermediates catalyze generation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide through a Fenton-like reaction. Thus the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity might involve the interaction between macromolecules and the hydroxyl radicals.C(Vl) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals (1-3). In contrast, most Cr(III) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic (1,4). Cr(VI) and Cr(III) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) , ions are rapidly transported across cellular membrane (1,4,5), while Cr[III) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents (!). Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(VI) ion is required for its reaction with DNA (1), the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(Vl) reduction has been the focus of current studies but the details are still not understood.Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(Vl) reduction include those on the reduction of Cr(VIJ by glutathione (GSH) .0,6-8), ascorbic acid (9), glucose (10), lactose (IO), galacturonic acid (11), microsome (12), and mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (13). These studies have shown that the Cr(VI) reduction involves the formation of Cr(V)-containing species which are often considered to be the toxic form of chromium. Thus far, however, no information is· available on the subsequent fate of those biologically formed Cr(V) species, in particular employing well defined biochemical systems. In this context, we report here our investigations of the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R). This enzyme was selected because it is ubiquitously present in cellular systems and it has been postulated to be involved in the Cr(VI) reduction (14-17) but the underlying mechanism has not been clarified. We find that the reduction proces·s involves not only Cr(V) but also ·OH radicals. We further investigate the reactivity of Cr(V) and find that it catalyzes generation of OH radical from H2O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. The role of ·OH in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity is suggested from this study."

The grinding characteristics of lignite in a ball mill were investigated. The variables studied were initial lignite moisture content, degree of in-the-mill drying, and lignite source. The mill tested was a pilot-p1ant-size conical ball mill which had a maximum output of from 80 to 180 lb/hr pulverized product depending on the lignite and test conditions. The capacity of the test mill ranged from 82 to 103 lb/hr depending upon mine source, in pulverization of as-mined lignite with minimum drying, The capabilities of the ball mill could not be correlated to Hardgrove index of the individual lignites or other observed physical properties. Predrying lignite from its 35 to 40 percent raw moisture content to about 10 percent moisture before grinding improved the mill capacity 87 percent, compared to an increase in capacity of 74 percent with in-the-mi11 drying to the same product moisture.

On a continuous miner coal face methane concentrations are affected by the quantity of fresh intake air reaching the face. When mining the box cut on a 12.2-m (40-ft) two-pass extended cut face, the continuous miner is always at the point of deepest penetration, and operation of the machine-mounted dust scrubber and water spray system improve the flow of fresh air to the end of the box cut. However, when the continuous miner leaves the box cut to begin cutting the 40-ft slab, little is known about how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a full-scale study to answer this question. Tests were run to determine how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut with the continuous miner at three locations in the 40-fttwo-pass extended cut mining sequence; at the end of the 40-ft box cut, at the start of the 40-ft slab cut, and 6.1 m (20 ft) into the slab cut. During these tests, methane gas was uniformly released at the end of the 40-ft box cut. Methane concentrations measured0.3 m (1 ft) from the roof and face of the box cut were used to estimate face airflow quantities. Fresh air flow rates of 1.89and 4.72 m/sec (4,000 and 10.000 cfm), scrubber flow rates of 0, 4,000 and 10,000 cfm, water spray pressures of 0 and3827 kPa (0 and 120 psi), and a blowing curtain setback position of 15.2m (50 ft) were used during these tests. To improve ventilation to the end of the 40-ft box cut when the continuous miner was starting the 40-ft slab cut and 20 ft into the slab cut, the blowing curtain was advanced from its 50-ft setback to locations 40-ft and then 8.5 m (28 ft) from the face. In restricted vertical working heights such as low-seam coal mines, workers are forced to assume kneeling or squatting postures to perform work. These postures are associated with increased risks for the development of significant knee pathologies such as meniscal tears and osteoarthritis [1,2]. Previous research has shown an increased applied knee flexion moment when kneeling in high flexion [3]. However, these models have been applied to flexion up to 140° which neglects contact between the thigh and calf which occurs beyond 140°. In addition to thigh-calf contact, when kneeling near full flexion there may be additional contact between the heel and gluteal muscles. To the author?s knowledge, heel-gluteus contact has not been previously investigated, but thigh-calf contact has received some attention. Zelle (2007) reported thigh-calf contact forces up to 30% bodyweight (BW) [4]. Zelle (2009) reported decreased knee forces when accounting for thigh-calf contact [5]. Caruntu (2003) reported erroneous force and moment estimations when thigh-calf contact was neglected from models to determine muscle and ligament forces [6]. In this study thigh-calf and heel-gluteus contact forces were quantified to determine their effect on the externally applied flexion moment in high flexion.

No detailed information has been published heretofore on the performance of small industrial-type anthracite stokers in building-heating service, apparently because of the difficulty of comparing the performance of one unit with that of another over an entire season&apos;s operation. Studies of competitive heating fuels have been similarly handicapped, and attempts to compare fuels are seldom technically sound in this investigation, the performance of a 60-in. Losch4 stoker burning rice-size anthracite in a standard commercial boiler was observed during a 4-month winter-spring season. It was used to heat two buildings at the Bureau of Mines&apos; Anthracite Research Center at Schuylkill Haven, Pa., with the customary type of automatic pressure-range control. Attendance was limited to inspecting, fuel weighing, data recording, and ash removal. Results were computed daily and grouped by weekly periods to minimize daily irregularities. The same stoker-boiler unit had already been tested in a series of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) test code runs, with the stoker running continuously and with other conditions well stabilized A comparison of results from the code test and the building-heating tests provided information not available in the past for a single stoker unit, assisted in analyzing heat losses not computable in a cyclic operation, and established a basis for evaluating stoker performance in heating service.

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation.
