Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.

This paper is a brief summary of work done on mining applications of high energy projectiles. Full scale field testing already completed has used cannons to drive a tunnel, drill large diameter holes, do secondary breakage in an open pit mine, and scale loose rock from inaccessible pit walls. Other applications are suggested in driving development openings, particularly raises. The method will be economically feasible only if cheap liquid propellants are developed.

Complacency on the job may have very little to do with not caring or a poor attitude. It may be just as simple as failing to continue to recognize the hazards surrounding us throughout the day. Emulsion explosives are gaining a wider and wider commercial market and are displacing other composite slurry technologies. However, the grease-like state and essential thermodynamic instability of emulsion explosives cause inconvenience in production, transportation, storage and use and lead to gradual changes in performance. Emulsion powder explosives are designed to avoid these disadvantages. The formulation, process and properties of emulsion powder explosives made through a spin flash technology are described in this paper.

New Mangalore Port is the most important port in Karnataka State, on the west coast of India on Arabian Sea. It handles export of iron ore, granite, coffee, spices etc and imports of crude oil, fertilizers etc. Since 1991, after economic liberalisation by the Government of India, the exports and imports at this port got a boost. Hence the Port Trust felt the need to increase the draught by about 3 to 5 meters for access to bigger ships. In response to a global tender in 1995, the Dutch Dredging Company got the contract to remove 30,000 cu.m of hard granite bed rock, covering 28,000 sq.mtr. area for the Turning Circle and oil Jetty. The operations of drilling, blasting and dredging were to be carried out to deepen the area to about 15 m draught without affecting the normal trade at the Port. This was a time bound contract to avoid interruption by severe Monsoon rains.

SAFEX International is a global organisation with more than 85 members, all of whom are manufacturers of explosives. On joining each member signs a declaration saying that they are willing to exchange information with regard to any accidents or near misses they may have in order to prevent the recurrence of the incident. SAFEX International was formed 50 years ago in Europe and has now built up a database of more than 700 accidents in the explosives business. Once every three years, an International Congress is held in which members address specific safety themes associated with the explosives industry, and also give details of "what went wrong?", "why?", and lessons learned. The next Congress will be held in Amsterdam between the 29th May and the 1st June 2002. This paper describes the operation of SAFEX International, which is dedicated to the international exchange of experience on industry connected accidents of the explosives business.

An important factor to consider during blast damage investigations is whether the structure was constructed on collapsible soils. Traditionally, these soils have been considered to be soils such as loess deposits, which occur along the Mississippi River in locations such as Vicksburg, MS. However, recent research into collapsible soils has indicated that a number of soils may also fall into this category. A collapsible soil is any soil that is susceptible to large decreases in bulk volume upon saturation.

The use of explosive charges for generating seismic energy has been around for a long time. For oil-field work or crustal studies, when the target of interest is many thousands of feet deep, the surface waves and similar phenomena are of little consequence. In mining applications, however, when the target is a few tens or hundreds of feet deep, the return signals are often masked by these waves and an accurate interpretation is difficult or impossible.

ICI has developed a new electrical shotfiring system which has markedly improved safety features and operational advantages over existing initiating systems. The development of the 'Magnadet' Electric Detonator and the related product 'Magna' Primer were described in a paper presented at the 1981 S.E.E. Annual Conference. Since then the system has been adopted in many different applications and conditions around the world. The present paper describes these applications, the experience gained and the more recent developments which have taken place.

Explosives provide a very concentrated source of energy which is often well in excess of that required to adequately fragment the surrounding material. Blast design, environmental requirements, production requirements and the lack of detailed insitu geological data generally limits the degree to which the explosive energy distribution within the blasthole can be significantly altered using, for example, different explosive formulations or variable loading techniques. However, increased flexibility can often be exercised over a blast through the use of air-decks.

Quadrex-L is a two component liquid explosive which was developed by J. S. Brower & Associates, Inc. to facilitate handling and shipping, and use in unique applications, while emphasizing safety. It may be advantageously used for all explosive applications. Quadrex-L can be introduced into a preinstalled container configuration and may be easily drained or flushed from these containers when necessary to do so. This characteristic can be effectively utilized to reduce the hazard period during assembly or disassembly operations.

This paper describes the application and results of a more efficient method of breaking boulders using dynamite and water. This method is being used for the disposal of boulders that result from pinnacle and cap rock remaining after blasting on highways and job sites. This method is a faster and less expensive use of dynamite to reduce oversized boulders than the conventional rock hammer. The problem with excessive fly rock has been substantially reduced when using this technique over traditional methods.

In this paper, the author points out the need to beware of simple time correlations as proof of cause and effect when comparing building cracks and blasting operations. There is a need to be aware of the many other causes besides blasting which affect buildings. Some of these have histories of cyclic behavior; others have a long-term increasing effect on aging and deterioration, often with poorly defined time histories. Many are so strongly site specific that generic relationships are difficult to quantify.

Mesabi Range blasting has evolved in over a century of mining. The obstacles including: hard and heavily jointed rock, bitter winters and frequent wet holes; combine to create a unique challenge for blasters. This paper documents current pattern designs, powder selection and loading practices for these seven mines that consumes as much as 130 million lbs of explosives each year. Blasting is characterized by wide burdens and spacings, large diameter holes (up to 16-inch) and bulk loading of augered and pumped emulsion/prill products.

In the past several years the "Kelly Bar", an innovative device, which incorporates borehole d-rifling and explosives loading into a single detail, has come under scrutiny and criticism. The practical aspects of the Kelly Bar procedure is not questioned, and the system has been highly successful in expediting the loading of explosives in difficult and unstable formations. There have been a number of accidents indirectly associated with Kelly Bar loading and the point in question has become one of safety rather than mechanical feasibility.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advise of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.

Active avalanche control is the intentional triggering of avalanches while people are kept out of the hazard area. Explosives are frequently the most effective tool for triggering avalances. In a highway setting an avalanche control program will reduce total highway closure time, while providing greater safety to motorists and maintenance personnel. Avalanche control with explosives is effective when the snow is somewhat unstable and almost ready to slide naturally. Forecasting this condition involves having a network of local meteorological stations, examining snow structure, using mountain weather forecasts, doing snow strength tests, and having the results of ski and explosive tests. The method of delivery of explosives to an avalanche starting zone is governed by the accessibility of the starting zone. Common methods include; hand placing or throwing charges, remote delivery cableways, or "trams", surplus military weapons, and a compressed gas charge launcher, or "Avalauncher". Charges dropped from helicopters are also occasionally use. We have increased the effectiveness of our program by use of large elevated charges. Efforts are being made around the world to develop and utilize better methods for the safe, remote initiation, but procedures have varied dramatically between individual control programs. There is now a movement to review and standardize operational guidelines for avalanche control. Highway avalanche control is often done at night, during winter mountain storms. Heavy rain or snow, high winds, and high avalanche hazard, are common work site conditions. Commercial and economic pressures are increading, so methods that redice highway closure time are important. There are also many safety issues to be addressed in avalanche control work.

AEL’s Electronic Delay Detonators are in routine use and growing in both volume and breadth of application in Africa. This trend will continue and grow internationally owing to increasing pressure on rockbreaking operations to conform to sustainable development principles. A fundamental breakthrough has been achieved, bringing production blasting into line with technologies, which leverage performance through tight monitoring and control. When moving from pyrotechnic systems, benefits are normally realized without having to adopt different timing patterns, but significant additional benefits are realisable by using the flexibility and precision of the electronic units to enter windows of timing previously closed. The higher price and increased care needed are a worthwhile investment, enabling operations to cross the chasm to stronger revenues, but the system must be robust and suited to the application and personnel. Economic models are vital for keeping track of the potential and achieved benefits of these systems. Some resistance can be expected from those who stand to lose income as a result of the improved efficiencies.
