A study has been undertaken to establish the relationships between the O&K wedge test cutting resistances and the geotechnical parameters of rock materials in the context of bucket-wheel excavator operation. Prediction equations were formed to estimate the cutting resistance from the geotechnical parameters by multiple regression analysis. The purpose of the cut is to provide a free face to which the remainder of a development or breasting round can break. The results of field testing in drifts and at a quarry face were used as a basis for a description of the rock breakage and flushing mechanism in the cut. It was concluded that the important features of a cut design are proper hole spacing, sufficient relief volume, drilling accuracy and relief holes slightly longer than the planned length of the round. The void space provided by the relief holes should be about 15% of the cut volume, with more required in weak, highly fissured rocks. The importance of drilling accuracy increases with round length, an error being magnified by the small blasthole spacing. The first hole pulls only about 20% of the round length, 4-6 holes having to be fired before the cut is pulled close to its design depth. The first four blastholes should be fired with a minimum inter-hole delay of 100 ms to provide progressive relief of burden and avoid the superimposition of ground vibrations. The earliest-firing charge should be closest to the relief area and act laterally, while the first of the vertically-fired charges to be detonated should be the uppermost. Problems during cut-pulling include sympathetic detonation, dynamic pressure desensitisation, charge disruption and freezing of the cut

When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. Equipment must be developed to maximise these two parameters

Equations for calculating the parameters of controlled blasting (burden and spacing of boreholes and weight of the bottom charge) are derived and analysed on the basis of empirical values and made more precise through incorporation of the properties of the rock being blasted and explosive applied. For the success of controlled blasting the correct choice of the blasthole diameter/charge diameter ratio is critical. This relation is defined as the coefficient of radial decoupling of the charge; it is recommended that it is chosen to be between 3 and 3.5. Analysis of smooth blasting, cushion blasting and presplitting indicates that cushion blasting is a less destructive alternative to smooth blasting, but it has a slightly higher blasthole consumption and limited possibilities of use. There are definite economic advantages to controlled blasting, especially in rock masses of low and medium strength

The toughness and fracture mechanisms of ores with significantly different microstructures from Yandi, Koolan and Mount Whaleback were studied with a view to understanding their degradation behaviour. Bulk fracture toughness was determined by the 3-point single-edge notch beam test and the results interpreted using Weibull statistical analysis; indentation fracture mechanics was also used to measure fracture toughness of the different mineral forms and to understand their response to contact fracture

This paper outlines the the methods currently being used in the West Wales Area for preventing the occurrence of any outbreak of spontaneous combustion. Stress is placed on the importance of correlating the position of a Rider Seam which is prone to spontaneous combustion. The recent introduction of the UNOR Recorder has contributed to the ability to monitor the CO content of the general body of the air during any incident. The use of modern sealants and improved methods of applying them have enabled the few instances of spontaneous combustion in South Wales to be treated promptly and efficiently. The authors describe the current spontaneous combustion problems at two collieries.

The process for bio-remediation of sulphidic slag (BROSS) operates at 45 degrees C in a neutral (pH 7), aerobic aqueous environment in which sulphide in the slag is converted to sulphate. A two-stage version has been developed that involves quantitative chemical pre-oxidation of total sulphide to thiosulphate, followed by complete biooxidation of thiosulphate to sulphate. Ferric hydroxide, also produced, acts as a flocculant in the bioreactor effluent, concentrating heavy metal precipitates in the thickener as a sludge which can be returned to the smelter. The process has a high sulphate production rate and low acid and nutrient consumptions. Microorganism growth is the rate-limiting stage, requiring a minimum liquid residence time in the bioreactor of about 7 h. Although large quantities of oxygen are needed, sufficient gas mass transfer can be attained in an air-lift reactor. Products are an aqueous stream containing sodium sulphate with only trace levels of toxic heavy metals and a benign, toxic metal-containing sludge

The mineralogical composition of the ore was determined and the mineral phases with which nickel is associated were identified. The ore was prepared by grinding to -420 micrometres and classification into granulometric fractions. Prior to the main series of experiments the effect of agitation rate on nickel recovery was investigated. The influence of sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and particle size on the kinetics of nickel extraction was then studied, both quantitatively and qualitatively, over fixed value intervals. Application of the initial rate method enabled determination both of the order of reaction with respect to sulphuric acid concentration and the activation energy for the dissolution of nickel. The results indicate that a physical mechanism can be ruled out as the rate-determining step in the extraction of nickel from the ore and that a chemical mechanism is more likely

The bodies of mammals possess a very efficient mechanism for ridding themselves of inhaled dust. When the lung is healthy this mechanism works very well, and dust is quickly and completely expelled from the lung either by the respiratory tract or the lymphatics. The mechanism, however, is easily upset, and slight alterations in the condition of the ciliated epithelium or the circulation of lymph are sufficient to interfere with it, therefore the second mechanism comes into play and the dust is fixed and immobilized in some part of the lung. This, however, is not a real cleansing process, since the lung becomes a dust-trap, and may become'pneumokoniotic. The mechanism is protective at first, but later, when the accumulation of dust is considerable, it gives rise to trouble. The lung cannot become, so to speak, a physiological dust-trap, and still retain its normal structure and function; pneumokoniosis begins, which is essentially a disease due to the mechanical presence of large amounts of inert foreign material.

Adsorption, electrokinetic and flotation studies were carried out. The maximum density of adsorption of guar gum was obtained at pH 7.5 on sphalerite and at pH 11.5 on galena. Flotation recovery of sphalerite was reduced only marginally by the presence of guar gum in the pH range investigated, whereas recovery of galena was reduced to about 20% at pH 12. Differential flotation tests on binary mixtures indicated that 10 ppm of guar gum can depress galena and separate it from sphalerite at around pH 12.1. Co-precipitation tests confirmed the formation of a metal ion-guar gum complex in the bulk solution, suggesting that this is the precursor to adsorption. The adsorption isotherms for both minerals followed Langmuirian behaviour, but adsorption of guar gum on galena was significantly higher than on sphalerite and dissolution tests indicated that the concentration of Pb ions released from galena was an order of magnitude greater than that of Zn ions dissolved from sphalerite

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. After a brief description of the causes of spontaneous heating and of general preventative methods, a detailed account is given of occurrences of spontaneous heating in the Main Seam (locally known as the 5/4 Seam) at Westoe Colliery. This seam is about 12 feet thick consisting of hands of coal and shale, but only 4 feet 6 inches is worked because of the thickness os strata in water-bearing rocks and the worked section is selected on quality considerations. An advancing longwall face in this seam (2nd South) began to heat after working for six months and ultimately had to be abandoned. By adopting retreating methods and mining narrow panels it has been possible to extract this coal at an excellent rate of productivity. The system of goaf ventilation is important, because the use of a bleed road would have given rise to dangerous conditions in a goaf which of necessity would have contained fallen coal. Preparatory seals were prepared at selected sites so that, if necessary, a panel could be sealed off quickly; these seals are completed as soon as possible (within three weeks) of finishing a panel. A gas sampling system has been instituted which includes daily sampling on the face and in the goaf, and weekly sampling at the stoppings of all completed panels. The coal has now been extracted from this seam for three years without any further difficulties from spontaneous heating.

Shearer drums are a critical component in the overall performance of coal shearers, with the cutting performance depending very much on the disposition of cutter tools on the drums (the tool-lacing arrangement). A series of practical and theoretical studies has been undertaken to investigate aspects of shearer drum vibration in terms of circumferential pick spacing. A number of commercially available drums were redesigned and the lacing patterns compared with those of the original drums under near-uniform conditions. Mine trials were carried out at the Middle Anatolian lignite mine in Turkey with drums fitted on Eickhoff type EDW-230 double-ranging drum shearers. It was found that the performance of drums could be improved if the concept of circumferential pick spacing was taken into account in CAD packages along with the existing design parameters such as cutting rate, reduced dust, low pick consumption and low down-time

The technical capabilities and user-friendliness of the major computer-aided mining design software systems are reviewed. Recent experiences with three systems are outlined to indicate the practical problems that arise. The examples were: Microlynx software from Lynx Geosystems at the Great Dyke platinum mine in Zimbabwe; Lynx software from Lynx Geosystems at a copper mine in central Africa; and PC-MINE software from Gemcom Services at an open-pit gold project in Western Australia. Difficulties in the use of mining design software has led to an alternative approach. Falconbridge, Canada, has developed an integrated mine-planning system on a CAD platform that encompasses ore reserve estimation, stope design, development layout and survey control. Future directions of computer-aided mining design using this basis are discussed. A major advantage of using mainstream software packages, such as spreadsheets, databases and CAD programs, is that most engineers and geologists are experienced in handling such systems in the normal course of their work.

Spessartine-quartz rocks are manganiferous sedimentary rocks rich in spessartine and quartz which occur in north-central New Brunswick. They represent a recrystallised manganiferous siltstone/chert that is contained in or associated with red manganiferous siltstone (RMS) units. The spessartine-quartz rocks and RMS form part of an Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary succession within the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen which hosts numerous massive sulphides and polymetallic vein deposits. The New Brunswick spessartine-quartz rocks are spatially and temporally associated with stratiform base-metal, precious metal and hydrothermal tin-tungsten deposits. This suggests that spessartine-bearing lithologies and zones can be useful in predictive metallogeny and for the understanding of the stratigraphy and palaeographic setting of the early Palaeozoic rocks of the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen.

The central domain of the Spanish Central System contains a series of Ba-(F)-(base metal sulphide) hydrothermal vein deposits that are hosted by adamellitic granitoids. Fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data suggest that the mineralisation was formed by low-salinity hydrothermal solutions that incorporated fluids, metals and sulphur from a magmatic source. Mineralisation occurred in two main stages; a first stage of open-space filling with quartz-Ba-(F)-(base metals) ; and a second stage of brecciation and deposition of quartz-barite. The two mineralising events can be clearly related to two tectonic episodes of late Variscan age that involved extension along east-west trends followed by ductile transcurrent movements along northeast-southwest trends.

The conditions of amine concentration and pH necessary for the concentration of fine haematite particles at the iso-octane-water interface have been determined. Results obtained from the related studies on the effect of pH and dodecylamine concentration on the adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle and concentration of various amine species in the system are included. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. Maximum concentration of haematite at the oil-water interface was obtained when the haematite zeta-potential was small or equal to zero
