Cone crushers are widely used within the mining and aggregate industries for the size reduction of minerals, ores, and rock materials. In mining applications for example, the product from cone crushers is often fed to HPGRs or directly to mills in the subsequent grinding circuit. An improved cone crusher performance can therefore result in an overall improved and more efficient comminution process. The objective of this paper is to systematically study a number of different ways of applying compressive crushing. By mathematically modelling these different crushing concepts and then theoretically optimizing crushing sequences accordingly, each concept can be studied and evaluated. In addition, aspects concerning whether or not the results are mechanically or practically achievable are considered. This study thus explores the advantages and disadvantages of different crushing concepts. In this paper, four different theoretical crushing concepts are presented and studied. The results show that in terms of interparticle crushing, optimal crushing sequences with varying compression ratios can be replaced by easier implemented series of constant compressions without significant deterioration. It is also shown that that considerably better performance is obtained for crushing sequences with both breakage modes. The subsequent comparison between such concepts indicates that different approaches can achieve the same results, and that the different concepts are comparable. It is further concluded that interparticle crushing should be kept to a minimum if fines generation or energy consumption is to be minimized, and that each of the studied concepts presents different challenges for implementation. "Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is frequently used as an oxidizing agent in various applications. It has also been reported to reduce the recovery of sulfide minerals. Moreover, the previous work applied H2O2 aqueous solution in selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. However, the oxidation method suffered in pilot scale test due to too long conditioning time. Furthermore, the excessive reagent consumption increased the reagent cost, causing the method not economically feasible. Consequently, further improvement is required to reduce the conditioning time and the reagent consumption. The oxidation performance of H2O2 can be improved by using ferrous iron as catalyst, producing a Fenton’s reagent which is more powerful oxidizer than the H2O2 itself. Therefore, the effect of Fenton’s reagent on the floatability of chalcopyrite and molybdenite was investigated in this study. The flotation test results show that selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite might be possible at low concentration of H2O2 aqueous solution by adding ferrous iron. Moreover, the conditioning time could be shortened by this improvement. To understand the phenomenon, surface characterization using atomic force microscopy (AFM) along with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were carried out. The AFM images show that the surface of chalcopyrite was readily covered with mountainous features which alters its hydrophobicity after the oxidation treatment. Meanwhile, the molybdenite surface remained clean and relatively hydrophobic. The XPS results indicate that the mountainous features are various oxidation products (i.e., FeOOH, Fe2(SO4)3, CuO, Cu(OH)2). Possible mechanisms of this phenomenon were proposed in this work.INTRODUCTIONConventionally, copper and molybdenum ores are separated in selective flotation circuits by using copper depressants (i.e., sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), sodium sulfide (Na2S), and Nokes reagent (P2S5+NaOH)). However, these depressants are usually toxic or hazardous. Therefore, various methods have been developed to replace these toxic and hazardous depressants, for example, by synthesizing new non-toxic or low-toxic depressants or by using various oxidation methods such as sodium hypochlorite in an alkaline medium, manganese dioxide, oxygen, ozone, and plasma pre-treatment (Arbiter and Young 1951; Barzyk et al. 1981; Curtis 1941; Hirajima et al. 2014, 2017). Recent study by Chimonyo et al. (2016) reported the effect of H2O2 on reducing the recoveries of sulfide minerals. Moreover, Hirajima et al. (2017) demonstrated that H2O2 depressed the floatability of chalcopyrite and could deliver a selective separation on copper and molybdenum (Cu-Mo) bulk concentrate in flotation process. However, they reported that this method required a higher concentration of H2O2 and a longer treatment time (4.5 h) to get a comparable result to that of using NaHS as copper depressant. Therefore, further improvements are necessary to reduce the conditioning time and reagent consumption."

The flotation performance of kaolinite in laboratory micro-flotation was investigated with 3- (dodecyloxy) propan-1-amine (ON12) as the collector. Compared with dode cylamine (DDA), which is commonly used as the bauxite reverse flotation collector, ON12 shows stronger collecting ability for kaolinite than using the same amounts of DDA, when experimental pH value reaches more than 6. With the addition of ON12, the isoelectric point of kaolinite shifts to 6.1 from 3.6, which suggests a strong adsorption between kaolinite and ON12. Infrared spectra analysis indicates that the type of ON12 adsorbed on the kaolinite surface is mainly of electrostatic adsorption. Molecular dynamics simulation further indicate that electrostatic adsorption of ON12 cation on kaolinite (001) surface based on electrostatic interaction between NH4+ and O atoms. ON12 will be suitable for bauxite reverse flotation with the efficiency depressors of the diaspora.

"The mineralogical and physico-chemical characteristics of a polymetallic sample from a mine of West Serbia suggest that it can be classified as a SEDEX type of ore. Those ores contain multiple value components, being inter-dispersed as fine grained aggregates. This prevents concentration by gravity or flotation concentration processes. Mineralogically, the valuable metals (Cu;Zn;Pb;Au and Ag) occur as pyrite, sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, covellite, arsenopyrite, and non-metallic minerals (barite, and waste minerals). Novel technologies are under development within this project for the recovery of all valuable metals from this very complex material. The work comprises the further treatment of solid residue obtained after Cu and Zn extraction by bioleaching, for the subsequent recovery of Pb and the precious metals Ag and Au. The residue is first treated with a saturated sodium chloride solution, whereupon a chloride solution of lead (NaPbCl3) is obtained. From the chloride solution, lead was deposited in the form of lead carbonate, followed by reductive melting, whereupon lead anode was obtained. Electrolytic refining of the lead anode, using a solution of PbCO3 in methane sulphonic acid (MSA-Methanesulfonic acid, min 99.5% CH4O3S, density 1.48 kg/dm3, Manufacturer: Carl Roth) as an electrolyte, yielded refined lead cathode. It should be noted that, after precipitation and separation of lead carbonate, the sodium chloride solution is restored to its original composition by the addition of make-up reagents and returned for another lead-sulfate leaching cycle. The solid residue obtained after leaching lead-sulphate, is leached in thiosulphate solution, with the addition of an activator, a catalyst and lixiviant for gold, to yield a thiosulphate solution of gold and silver. Since the content of gold and silver in solution is low (below 1 mg/dm3), they are first electrolytically concentrated on steel cathode and then refined to pure metals using well-known chemical methods. Note that, after the electrolytic separation of gold and silver, thiosulphate solution is recycled to the leaching step."

"The re-treatment of gold tailing heaps has shown to be a potentially significant revenue stream for both large and small scale gold companies. Limited access to capital and lack of skilled labour remain restrictive especially when dealing with a refractory ore and/or where limited amount of material are available. Alternative techniques such as low temperature pre-leaching options to unlock value are therefore in demand. Several low temperature pre-leaching experiments in acidic and alkaline solutions, followed by cyanidation were performed which ultimately led to the further investigation of a caustic pre-leaching step. It was found that the Au recovery from a refractory ore tailings heap could be significantly improved from ˜ 15 to 20% to greater than 60% with a simple atmospheric NaOH pre-leaching step. It was further considered, that since the NaOH pre-leach liberate the Au associated with refractory sulphide minerals, the overall process may benefit by the inclusion of a froth flotation step to separate refractory sulphides from the free milling ore. Froth flotation on weathered tailing heaps are, however, known to be difficult, ultimately resulting in poor recoveries. A process flow sheet, incorporating a caustic pre-leaching step and a process which includes flotation and caustic pre-leaching of the concentrate, are technically evaluated and ultimately compared to simple cyanide re-processing. INTRODUCTION South Africa consists of a large number of gold tailings dumps. Janse van Rensburg (2016) estimated that there was about 517 dumps in the Gauteng area, covering approximately 320 000 ha of surface area. Recovering value from the dumps has received a great deal of interest but can be problematic due to the dumps often being refractory, preg-robbing and weathered. High recovery of valuable metals (Au and Ag) are possible (Fleming and Brown, 2010) but would most likely require pressure oxidation and subsequent neutralisation which can be very capital intensive demanding a high skill set to operate and maintain. In addition, these flowsheets target high processing tonnages due to the economy of scales at the lower grade feed materials, further increasing the capital requirement."

In such devastating situation, the concept of Sustainability emerges out as a great savior. This concept focuses on minimum/ judicious use of natural resources, thereby preserving the resources for future generation while meeting the bare minimum requirement of the present generation. For an emerging economy like India, Mining and Mineral based industries form the back bone of our economic development. Thus, sustainability of mining and mineral processing industry has a far reaching impact on sustainable economic development of our nation. While at a macro-economic level, we have to strike a balance between economic development vis-à-vis socio-economic & environmental impacts, Industries have to ensure judicious and frugal use of natural resources by making use of energy efficient plants & machineries and adopting befitting technology for reduction & recycling of waste. In the context of the above, it would be interesting to look into the sustainability measures taken up by National Aluminium company (Nalco) at its Crushing & conveying plant at Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine, which is incidentally Asia?s largest Bauxite Mine. In the backdrop of the above stated facts, in this paper the authors make an attempt to bring out the sustainability issues in areas of energy conservation, environmental impact/pollution vis-a-vis mitigation measures adopted in crusher & conveyor plant of Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine & CSR / peripheral developmental activities undertaken by Nalco to mitigate the socio- economic impacts. Electrochemical processes occur on nano-, micro- and macro- scale in numerous applications such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen production, mineral extraction, water treatment, electrotherapy, sensors and many others. In most of these applications, gases evolve either at one or both electrodes due to electrolysis. These gases form bubbles play a crucial role in electrochemical systems. For example, in electrowinning (EW) that is used to extract and refine metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd from their solutions, in most cases the solution is acidic and oxidation of water molecules at the anode is the common counter reaction, which results in the liberation of oxygen bubbles. This generally requires a high overpotential and accounts for a considerable percentage of the energy consumed in metal EW electrolytic cells, apart from producing acid mist that is very corrosive for other cell equipment and building structures. The behaviour of bubbles in electrochemical systems is still a complex challenging topic which requires a better understanding of gas bubbles hydrodynamics and their interactions with electrode surface and bulk liquid, as well as between the bubbles themselves. The objective of the current paper is to briefly review the fundamental hydrodynamics of both gas bubbles on the electrode surface and gas bubbles interaction with the liquid bulk solution. The current work also investigates the impact of gas bubbling and some operating parameters in copper EW, such as current density (100-500 A/m2), temperature (25-75ºC), acidity (50-300 g/L) and a typical chemical mist suppressant (<50 ppm). The results clearly show that both suppressant and temperature reduced the overall surface tension of the solution. Also, chloride concentration and applied current improved electrolyte flow and copper quality at higher current densities. The current paper contributes to the development of mineral processing (specifically to copper hydrometallurgy), as it deals with fundamental hydrodynamics and interactions of gas bubbles that formed during copper EW and play a crucial role in copper electrochemical systems.

The ash contents in coal particles were examined in the paper dependably on particle size and its density. So, the two-dimensional regressive function Z=Z(?, D) was the searched object, where Z is random variable describing ash contents, ? - density and D ? particle diameter. This dependence is determined basing on experimental data concerning the coal of type 31. For this coal, the method of ordinary kriging is applied to calculate the values of a random variable Z. This method requires the proper selection of so-called variogram function, which 4 forms are considered in this paper in purpose to select the best solution. The given results were then evaluated by the residual deviation value and so compared with empirical data.

The criteria for designing a crushing chamber are presented and a program for designing the shape of the chamber is proposed. During the chamber shape design, major design parameters are analyzed first, optimized parameters are determined next and the basic shape of chamber is figured out finally. In the basic chamber design program, the influence of abrasion of basic chamber shape and material characteristic are not accounted for usually. Here, based on the minimum abrasion of chamber shape and uniform particle size theory, the equation for chamber surface curve and the transcending function were formulated and a low-abrasion chamber was designed. Since the chamber shape designed based on experience and experiments is not necessarily the best, optimal design of the crushing chamber shape was carried out. Cubic spline function was used to represent the chamber shape curve and a mathematical model was formulated. The optimal shape solution was obtained using a complex method. Finally, the optimal chamber shape was determined by matching the moving cone stroke S, moving cone speed N and the moving cone bottom angle Thus, superior technical performance of the cone chamber was achieved.

"The aim of this work was the study of the effect of the type (Fe3+, Al3+ and Fe3+ and Al3+ mixture) and of the coprecipitant concentration on As5+ removal by ACF. Removal of As5+ using Sodium Dodecylsulfate (SDS) as a collector was studied by Adsorbing Colloid Flotation (ACF) at laboratory scale. The morphology of the precipitate retained in the foam was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDS).By comparing the coprecipitant type and concentration studies it could be concluded that As5+ removal in the presence of Fe3+ (160 mg.L-1) alone, or a Fe3+ (80 mg.L-1) and Al3+ (40 mg.L-1) mixture, is equivalently effective (99,9%) and greater than in the presence of Al3+ (80 mg.L-1) alone (97,7%).Through SEM/EDS analyses, it was possible to observe that both morphology and composition of the precipitate produced in the solution and retained in the foam depend on the physico-chemical conditions of the system, that is, on the species present in the solution."

We studied the feasibility of automated mineralogy to discriminate between tennantite and enargite, the main sulfosalts found in the Rio Blanco deposit, Codelco-Chile, in order to predict the content of minor elements (As, Sb, Ag, Pb, Zn) that impact on the process and concentrate prices. The identification of these minerals is feasible using traditional microscopy, however not possible by automated mineralogy. This drawback prevents comparing the databases generated in the past by means of conventional microscopy with the information obtained at present by QEMSCAN. To differentiate enargite from tennantite the mineral composition of both sulfosalts was studied by electron microprobe. The presence of associated minor element contents of about 8% zinc in tennantites and not exceeding 0.07% in enargites were used to modify the SIP database of QEMSCAN to enable the quantification of these phases in samples of head, residue and concentrate coming from As-bearing domains of the deposits. Detection limits allowed to determine the mineral species in the head, concentrate and residues. The integration of methodologies such as automated mineralogy and microprobe can be used successfully to quantify the presence of some ore forming solid solution.

"In this paper, we report a simple and effective process for producing a surfactant mixture of O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC) and 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan (BBSH). The composite collector was synthesized via one-pot reaction of sodium isopropyl xanthate, 4-tert-butylbenzylchloride and ethylamine using tert-butyl alcohol as solvent. The whole process for the synthesis of composite collector involves neither foul smelling reagents or intermediates, nor any by-products requires special treatment for disposal, and thus can be scaled up to an industrial level. The flotation response of chalcopyrite and pyrite independently with IPETC and BBSH collectors and with their mixture (the mole ratio of IPETC and BBSH is 1:1) was assessed. The microflotation results showed that the collecting ability of BBSH was slightly stronger than that of IPETC and that IPETC was more selective collector than BBSH against pyrite, and that the composite collector displayed a stronger collecting ability toward chalcopyrite than IPETC, and superior selectivity for chalcopyrite against pyrite than BBSH. The batch flotation results showed that composite collector exhibited better performance than IPETC and BBSH. It was demonstrated that the mixing of IPETC and BBSH would give rise to a synergistic effect significantly enhancing overall flotation performance. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of BBSH on the surface of chalcopyrite was conducted by adsorption test and infrared spectrum measurement, and the results showed that the interaction of BBSH on the chalcopyrite surface was dominated by the chemical adsorption, and the formation of a strong S-M bond plays a key role in the adsorption of mercaptans on minerals surfaces. The developed flotation reagents with special preparation method is the author’s original design, patented (patent of the People’s Republic of China) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is an essential method widely used in the mineral processing industry to selectively separate valuable minerals from gangues[1]. Worldwide, more than 109 tons of materials are treated annually by this method with the majority being metal sulfides and oxides[2]. Nowadays, the judicious utilization of complex sulfides to meet the ever-growing demand of mineral resources gains more attention, due to the gradual depletion of deposits with high grade, making imperative the development of new high-efficiency collectors and mixtures of collectors to process complex minerals. In comparison to individual collectors, the use of mixtures has several notable benefits including lower dosage requirements, improved selectivity, rates and recovery and an increase in the recovery of coarse particles[3-9]. Moreover, in terms of cost and environmental issues, using collector mixtures can reduce the total amount of agents used, thus reducing the overall effect on the environment and economic costs without affecting the flotation performance. "The study provides the comparative analysis of the performance of water only cyclones and hydrocyclone for iron ore fines processing at Joda Iron ore processing plant, Tata Steel. Joda iron ore deposits have higher proportion of kaolinite in the finer fractions and are meant to be separated with cyclones. The iron processing flowsheet of Joda comprises of water only cyclone for beneficiation of iron ore fines. Water only cyclones are used for the beneficiation of fines in the iron ore processing industry and have a larger cone angle compared to that of conventional hydrocyclones to enhance the density effect in the separation. They are aimed to achieve better product quality of underflow however; the desired result could not be achieved at the Joda processing plant. The water only cyclones were operating at the corrected cut-size of about 60 micron with an imperfection of 0.40 and water split to underflow was approximately 10%. The overall Fe recovery from the water only cyclones were 60%. Since the quality of fines produced from the water only cyclone couldn’t be improved, an attempt was made to process the fraction in the conventional hydrocyclone to achieve the desired product quality. The trial results indicated better product quality with the Fe recovery of 72% at corrected cut-size of 70 microns and imperfection of around 0.29. In view of above results it was recommended to replace the water only cyclones with hydrocyclones to achieve higher product quality of about 60% Fe content.INTRODUCTION Water only cyclones were installed at wet plant, Joda to process the classifier fines where the cyclone underflow is considered as concentrate and overflow is discarded as slime. Because of the lower capacity of the cyclones 30% of the classifier overflow was bypassed directly to thickener. Apart from this the quality of fines produced from the water only cyclone couldn’t be improved further hence an attempt was made to process the fraction in the conventional hydrocyclone to achieve the desired product quality and quantity. Hydrocyclone was installed at Joda after replacing stub-cyclone and came into operation on 23rd Aug’ 2017.The process variables of water only cyclones and hydrocyclones are tabulated below:"

"The valuable materials resulting from the processing of gold-bearing ores are often refractory to direct gold recovery through cyanidation. There are multiple methods for chemical liberation of gold prior to cyanidation such as pressure and biological oxidation as well as atmospheric oxidation which is typically used in combination with physical activation of material by ultrafine grinding such as the Albion ProcessTM. This paper will examine the data from process testworks carried out to estimate the efficiency of the Albion Process™ for the oxidation of materials with a wide composition range prior to cyanidation. The data will be compared to that obtained by direct cyanidation of the feed (without oxidation) and from the testing of pressure oxidation on the feed prior to cyanidation. Albion Process™ tests were conducted in Institute TOMS with participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Refractory concentrates obtained from the ores of several Russian and CIS deposits were used as feed for the testing. These concentrates were also subjected to a material composition study and testing using conventional recovery methods. The resulted test data make it possible to perform an integrated assessment of process properties for materials with different compositions, compare performance of various process flowsheets for the materials under study, and conclude on efficiency of Albion Process™ application for gold recovery from refractory materials different in their composition.INTRODUCTION It is often the case that gold ore concentrates are refractory to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. This refractory nature is as a rule attributable to fine gold dissemination in minerals, most often in pyrite and other sulphides, as well as to the increased amount of components impeding cyanide leaching of gold due to cyanide consumption and reducing process conditions. The refractoriness of the concentrates results in low gold recovery values when conventional cyanidation technology is used. In this context, various additional processes are applied to breakdown such refractory sulphide concentrates, i.e. mechanical breakdown (fine and ultrafine grinding), chemical breakdown (atmospheric oxidation, e.g. Leachox, acid-oxygen oxidation, pressure oxidation – POX, bacterial oxidation – BIOX), and thermochemical breakdown (various roasting methods). Such breakdown processes allow for increase in recovery of finely disseminated gold during the downstream cyanidation, however, their application is cost-intensive and does not always ensure economic benefit."

"China is rich in low-rank coals that account for 45.68% of existing coal reserves in China. The clean and efficient utilization of low rank coals is of great significance for ensuring the effective energy supply and promoting economic development and environmental protection. In order to solve the difficult problem in flotation of low rank coal, it has become the focus of research in the related field that oily bubbles instead of air bubbles are taken as a carrier in flotation to improve the attachment efficiency and recovery of low rank coal. In this paper, low rank coal slime collected from Shendong mining area was used as the experimental material, and it focused on the characteristics of oily-bubble flotation process of low rank coal. Additionally, difference in conventional flotation and oily-bubble flotation was discussed. The induction time between air bubbles, oily-bubbles and fine low rank coal particles was measured. The results indicated that the induction time between oily-bubbles and coal particles was obviously lower than that of air bubbles. By comparing the foam height of air and oily bubbles, it was found that the amount of oily bubbles is less than air bubbles, causing relative low flotation rate of oily-bubble flotation at initial stage. Besides, the maximum foam height and half-life of air bubbles and oily-bubbles were measured respectively. The results showed that the stability of oily-bubbles was higher than that of air bubbles, which is benefit for the enrichment of concentrates. The clean coal water recovery of oily-bubble flotation is lower than that of air bubble flotation, which indicated oily-bubble flotation is lower in water entrainment. INTRODUCTION China is the largest energy consumer in the world, accounting for 23% of global energy consumption in 2016 and 27% of global energy consumption growth. Whereas coal is taken as the major primary energy source and its share of China’s primary energy consumption is 62% in 2016, in which the low rank coals, such as lignite, long-flame coal, weakly caking coal, and non-caking coal, accounted for about 50% of total coal production capacity (China’s energy market in 2016, BP). Moreover, the exploitation and utilization of low rank coals and other coals that are difficult to float have been an important strategy for China’s sustainable development of the coal industry (Liu et al., 2014). However, the combustion of low-quality coals leads to a serious environmental pollution. In addition, the deterioration in geological conditions of coal resources, and the increasing improvement in the mechanization for mining significantly caused the increased amount of fine coal."

Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

"Column flotation (CF) is widely using equipment in mineral processing since many years. ERT technique facilitates non-invasive and nonintrusive visualization of different parameters in a column flotation. The hydrodynamic investigation of two-phase and three-phase are studied using electrical resistance tomography (ERT) coupled with pressure transducers in laboratory column flotation. Bubble size distribution, bubble rise velocity and gas and solids hold-up hydrodynamic parameters are extensively used for column flotation design and performance evaluation. The effect of superficial gas velocity, feed flow rate and slurry height in the column on mean gas holdup and its radial distribution has been analyzed for both two-phase and three phase flows. Influence of solid particles on gas hold-up and its complete elucidation of dispersion in the column are assessed. Experimental results show ERT coupled with PT is suitable as an online monitoring tool to provide useful information on the hydrodynamic parameters of the column flotation. The tomography images, which were generated using a modified sensitivity back projection algorithm, were employed to explore the parameter study in two phase flow in column flotation.Furthermore, the results also indicate that ERT is a very powerful tool for diagnosing the `inside' flow behaviour of gas-liquid two-phase and gas–liquid–solid three-phase flow in columns operating for a wide range of flow regimes.INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is being widely used in mineral processing industries in last few decades. "Predicting the liberation spectra that are produced from breakage of two-phase ores under the random fracture assumption can be accomplished by measuring the conditional, on length, linear grade distribution directly from images obtained from a representative sample of the unbroken texture. The technique tremendously simplifies the prediction problem by avoiding the multiple convolutions that arise from the traditional method based on a description of texture from a measurement of the chord length distributions associated with each phase in the unbroken texture. For a 3-phase system, the phase transition probabilities associated with the textural information make the traditional calculation an almost insurmountable mathematical problem. The direct measurement procedure on the other hand can be expanded to three phases comparatively easily.A coal sample is used here to demonstrate the procedure. It is concluded that the conditional, on length, linear grade distribution can be predicted in the same fashion for multi-phase systems. Accurate stereological conversion is the practical hurdle to be overcome for multi-phase systems, but it is already a reality for 3- phase systems."

Mechanical activation of gibbsite [?-Al(OH)3] is the theme of this paper. Industrially prepared gibbsite used in the study has a mono modal size distribution with a median size, d50=110 µm. Mechanical activation of this gibbsite has been carried out in a planetary mill at ambient conditions. Mechanical activated gibbsite samples are characterised in terms of particulate characteristics, structural characteristics and reactivity. As a result, of milling, mono modal size distribution of the unmilled gibbsite changes to a broad multimodal distribution. Size reduction has been sharp in the initial stages of milling; median size reduces to ~7 µm during 15 min of milling. Thereafter no decrease in median size is observed; rather it is found to increase gradually with further increase in milling time, indicating particle aggregation. Morphological studies of milled gibbsite have shown that the platelets forming the agglomerate are separated first; the separated platelets then undergo breakage. Aggregation of particles sets in the later stages of milling as a result of increased surface area and surface energy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies have clearly revealed the changes in gibbsite structure during milling. Analyses of XRD data show that the crystallite size of gibbsite decreases as the milling time progresses whereas its microstrain is found to increase. Accumulation of energy in the structure is the result in both cases. TEM micrographs with signs of defects leading to disordering of gibbsite structure complement the XRD results. Reactivity of milled gibbsite, decrease in its deydroxylation temperature and increase in alkali dissolution, is found to increase with mechanical activation. Increased reactivity of milled gibbsite is found to have a strong correlation with the BET specific surface area. At Tata Steel, Coal is washed in gravity and froth flotation circuit at 13-15 mm size and below. Being coal is high in ash (~35%) and difficult washability characteristics (having high (~40 %) NGM at desired ash levels) needs more and timely quality data of ROM for effective optimization and process control. Conventional approach of supplying quality data takes 4-5 hours time. This means during this period, it is assumed that coal is having similar characteristics as of previous set and it is not possible to fine tune during this time which resulted in yield loss. Hence producing clean coal on agreed ash value consistently is a challenging task because of high NGM and variation in input quality. To overcome the problem of collection of representative sample and timely result a new technology was adopted Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology which is basically an online analyser using Gamma rays as the source to measure the ash content in coal running on a conveyor which gives real time ash analysis.
