"The environmental effects of the mining and mineral industry include destruction of natural habitats, changes in river regimes and water tables, and other serious ecological impacts. In this century, it is likely that water will become a critical resource, and in most countries the mining industry competes for a share of this resource. The Kyoto Protocol may at first seem only relevant to the coal mining and power industry, however, it should not be forgotten that the mining and mineral industry is a significant consumer of power. Therefore the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by most developed countries and the introduction of a carbon credit trading scheme will impact on the industry by potentially increased costs in utilities and waste discharges. It is clear therefore that the mining industry faces many challenges in the coming years. The mining industry?s commitment to sustainable development needs to continue to evolve, in order to meet these challenges effectively. With the advent of globalisation of the industry, it is now an opportune time for the industry to gain international agreement on how they want the industry to achieve sustainability in future years; such a progressive approach is necessary, otherwise government will force the industry to change, which may not necessarily be the best outcome for the industry.INTRODUCTIONThe Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 was an opportunity for world leaders to assemble and discuss strategies and initiatives that provide for further industrial growth without adverse effects on the environment. The World Summit on Sustainable Development held last year in Johannesburg, South Africa, was an opportunity to evaluate those initiatives implemented over the past 10 years, and to set a new and sustainable direction for the future. It is clear that industrial and technology development will continue at a rapid pace in order to serve the needs of a growing world population, but it is essential that the course of this development is well planned, well executed, and that it is sustainable. In reality, while government officials and politicians continue to debate policy and international protocols, the environment continues to suffer and the effects of climate change and global-warming become more real each day."

Kaolin clay is used as a filler and pigment in various applications such as paper, paint, rubber, plastics, adhesives, ink and ceramics etc. Major mineral content in crude kaolin clay is kaolinite along with some accessory minerals as quartz, hematite, mica, feldspar, anatase, rutile, illemnite etc. The Fe and Ti bearing minerals play very important role in determining quality of the kaolin, as these minerals impart yellow, pink or darker color to the white kaolin. Conventional beneficiation methods used in kaolin processing are de-gritting, classification and sodium dithionite bleaching, which improves the optical properties of kaolin, wherein reduction of color imparting constituents such as Fe2O3 and TiO2 is marginal. In the present study, these coloring impurities are separated using selective adsorption of water-soluble polymers. Degritted kaolin samples after passing through 45 micron sieve is used in the study for selective flocculation by polyacrylamide based polymers. The effect of pH, zeta potential, and polymer dose on the reduction of impurities is studied. Analytical tools such as XRF, XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques are utilized and results are discussed in detail.

The objective of this research was, to evaluate the hazard of heavy metals in the soil around the National Iranian Lead & Zinc (NILZ) Company. In this study, 38 samples of soil around the NILZ factory were collected using standard sampling method, so that, the heavy metals Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr have been evaluated. The concentration of heavy metals were measured and compared with standard limits. The results show that the hazard of heavy metals in soil is not so serious and the content of Pb in just 5 percent of samples, and the content of Zn in just 3 percent of samples were above standard limits and the concentration of Cd and Cr were under the standard limits. Average, variance and standard deviation of the elements are calculated and with due attention to the standard deviation, Pb and Zn are seen to be more distributed than Cd and Cr. Also the isograde curve of heavy metals was drawn using software called Surfer. These curves showed that the heavy metals are concentrated at particular distances from the factory. Semi-industrial test on fine products of Meishan dressing plant was carried out with type RP80/25 high pressure roller mill produced by Homburg Corporation of Germany, and the influences of such factors as energy consumption, water containing, throughput and circulating load on rolling effect were investigated. Closed circuit experiment result showed that Meishan iron ore could be suitable for powder grinding with high pressure roller mill, and energy consumption of the operation was declined by 25%~30%, which was favorable for energy-saving, increasing production efficiency and improving grinding effects. According to above experimental results, this paper put forward the technical proposal of application of high pressure roller mill in Meishan, and pointed out some technical problems which needed to be settled urgently in technology disposal.

The big challenge at present and in the future is the economization of resources. This is applied for the whole industry but particularly in fields of mineral processing. The most important resources are energy and water. The shortage and price advance of energy is worldwide noticeable whereas the shortage of water is regionally limited at present. However due to the increasing world population, associated with a rising standard of living, water will become more and more important. Studies of the Unesco from 2001 indicate that the total water consumption raised seven times since the last 100 years at a growth of population of just three times. (UNESCO-Currier, 10/2001). This trend is going to be increased. While today more than 90 % of the humanity has access to clean water, in 2050 just about 50 % will be in the same situation. These figures indicate the importance of a gentle handling with the resource water. Further more the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern and in the future the mining and processing of raw materials will become important and necessary in desert, arid or permafrost areas. In these areas just efficient dry cleaning technologies will allow an economical beneficiation or better enable the processing at all. Most of the separation technologies with high throughput rates in mineral processing are based on wet processes. This applies especially for the separation of fines. Though there are some dry technologies available for the separation of coarse materials, like pneumatic gravity separation [air jigs and air tables], magnetic separation and not least sensor based sorters. Dry separation of fines is bounded mostly on cost intensive and low throughput technologies. The pneumatic separation undergoes at present a renaissance, mainly due to the development of the all air jig by the German supplier Allmineral. This newly developed sorting device yields good results in the separation of coarse to medium size material. All these facts and figures show the potential and motivation for developing an efficient dry separation device for fines. The following article delineates the development, performance and chance of a new dry separation technology for fines.

The manufacturing process of bricks companies utilizes 90% magnesite from 85%~90% MgO. The main objective of the magnesite bricks was to utilizes the indigenous raw material available in bulk quantity. With better under-standing of chemistry of the mineral species and strict control of bricks manufacturing/processing conditions can be better produce efficiently, a low cost high quality bricks with minimum detrimental environmental impact.

This will allow development of efficient process flowsheet for product recovery and compliance with regulatory guidelines. This paper will discuss our recent developments in mineral processing and hydrometallurgical technologies to recover gold and titanium dioxide from a wide range of feed materials including ores, concentrates and tailings.

The flotation circuit and the reagents of the all-sliming flotation about low grade and hard operation on zinc oxide ore are researched in the paper. The results indicated that there are many types of zinc minerals in this ore, and the composition is very complex. They include hemimorphite, smithsonite, hydrozincite and so on. The ore is seriously sliming. In light of the ore properties, three kinds of flowsheets have tested. They are gravity concentration (cleaning tables), flotation, combined process of gravity concentration and flotation. The test showed that the recovery of zinc is only 17.08% in the gravity separation. In combined process of gravity separation and flotation, the recovery of zinc concentrate is close to 70%. But the flow-sheet is complex and hard to control in the production. The floatation circuit is feasible. In the test, it pay attention to investigate the new combined reagent which is used in selective all?sliming flotation process. The effects of slime are eliminated by the multi-loop treatment of middling. In flotation, the final recovery of concentrate is 88.76%; the grade is 29.50%. The recovery of physical ore is 93%; and the recovery of -10mm fraction is more than 65%.

"The combined use of semiconductor properties and specific flotation characteristics of minerals under different conditions with external influences ensures a possibility for process control and management. This work presents the relations between the volumetric and surface characteristics of minerals and the minerals' flotation ability (flotability), as well as the possibility for the flotability purposeful change. Results from proprietary laboratory and industrial research are presented showing how controlled impacts on minerals and flotation pulp improve flotation technology. Such an approach reveals prospects for the creation of new technologies for the minerals' beneficiation.INTRODUCTIONThe decrease of the useful components content in the ores, the increasingly complex nature of the raw materials, the increasing energy consumption per the unit of production, and the need to solve the problems related to the environment pollution require solutions different than the existing classical ones. One of the ways to find such solutions is the detailed consideration of the fundamental properties of minerals and, in particular, of minerals having semiconductor properties. The studies of Plaksin et al. (1968), Chanturia and Shafeev (1977), Chanturia and Vigdergauz (2008), Carta et al. (1973), Hoberg and Shneider (1975), Rao et al. (1992) have given an idea of the energy state of the minerals, their flotation ability, and the ways in which this ability can be changed in one or the other direction. The main line in these works is the study and use of the relationship between bulk and flotation properties of minerals. To improve the efficiency of the process, it is also necessary to consider the relationship between the surface properties of the minerals, especially minerals-semiconductors, and their flotation ability.THEORETICAL BACKGROUND IN BRIEFA quantitative estimation of energy changes in a solid phase in the process of flotation may be made by taking in account the changes in the Fermi level. Its position in the forbidden band is an indicator about the direction and the intensity of electron exchange between solid and liquid phases. The Fermi level energy EF enables the estimation of flotability, intensity of needed external impact before flotation, as well as efficiency of the process going on. The present study aimed to investigate the depyritization of coal using iron oxidizing and sulphur oxidizing acidophilic chemolithotrophic microorganisms in an iron free 9K growth medium at varying pulp densities. Three different coal samples used in the shake flask study from three different countries such as domestic anthracite (Korean), Indonesian and Chinese lignite. Experiments were carried out in batch at a controlled temperature of 35 °C and varied pulp densities of 8%, 10% and 12% (w/v) with a working volume of 100 ml containing 10 ml of microbial inoculum and 90 ml of the iron free 9K growth medium. Coal samples were crushed and ground to fine size fractions <100 microns by attrition mill wet grinding. The progress in the experiments were followed by the regular measurements of pH, redox potential, viable planktonic cell count, residual Fe2+ ion concentration, amount of acid addition and amount of slaked lime addition. The pyritic sulfur removal percentage varied between 90-95% with highest sulfur removal with China coal (95%) followed by Korean Coal (93-94%) and slightly lower level for Indonesia coal (90%). However the pyrite oxidation was highest for Korean coal ranging between 78-80% followed by a similar level of pyrite oxidation of 50-61% for the Chinese and Indonesian coal. It was found that 10-12% pulp density would be fairly feasible for all the different coals tested leading to an economical process. Another benefit from this study is the iron free 9K growth medium, which will reduce the operation cost and overall it?s an environment friendly process.

"Impact breakage is the most elementary size reduction mechanism in comminution devices. In comminution research, characterization of breakage is primarily concerned with the energy expended to cause it. The main challenges of this approach have been quantifying the actual energy requirements of impact breakage and developing mechanistic models to accurately describe the process. For engineering load analysis, fracture is characterized in terms of strengths such as yield stress and ultimate tensile stress, which govern the maximum loads specific materials can be subjected to before irreversible inelastic deformation and subsequently complete fracture occur. With this approach, the main challenge has been to elucidate the underlying mechanism, in the means that the load causes weaknesses in the material microstructure to act as sites for stress concentrations, leading to crack initiation, propagation and eventual failure. Studies dedicated to investigating particle fracture under impact loading have led to the development of several devices for conducting breakage characterization tests. These devices include the drop weight tester, split Hopkinson pressure bar, rotary breakage tester and the short impact load cell. All these have different particle loading and breakage methods, and thus can yield distinct information which can be compiled together to study a material and the nature of breakage. This work analyses the single impact breakage data obtained across the listed devices. A homogenous ore commonly known as blue stone is used for all breakage tests. The work is conducted using standard procedures specific to each device as closely as possible. Drop weight and rotary breakage tests were used to obtain hardness parameters based on an existing t10 breakage model, while split Hopkinson pressure bar and short impact load cell measurements provided properties based on conventional engineering load analysis. The results were used to highlight the significance of the loading geometry, impact mechanism and impulse on the extent of breakage."

Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. "Ore sorting technology has been rapidly advancing in recent years. Improving expected mill feed grade has a significant benefit to project returns, and can no longer be ignored. When there is an increase in the mill feed grade while maintaining the same throughput, the mine will be able to process much more metal and improve the floatation recovery. There are many more factors that contribute toward the economics of the project by implementing sensor-based sorting technologies covered in this paper. This paper reviews the economic impact on an underground copper-silver deposit with references to the concept of ""profit recovery,"" which is the measurement of recovery based on rock profitability rather than just metal content. The economic impact of sensor-based sorting is discussed in detail throughout the paper. The preliminary economic evaluation of the project compares the mine's base case design versus a design incorporating sensor-based sorting. The paper's primary focus is on economic impacts rather than the explanation of the sensor based sorting results. The sorting data is presented on a scoping level and using a sensor-based sorting study where the best possible results are used for obtaining the grade recovery curves. Also, the breakdown and analysis of the project economics are based on the operating cost available from the particular operation. Any assumptions taken into consideration are also outlined and discussed. INTRODUCTION The mining industry has been adopting Sensor-based ore sorting technology fairly rapidly in the recent years. The ability to increase mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the processing stage is proving to be revolutionary for some operations. These potential outcomes should not be overlooked by both producing operations and prospective projects, thus leading to a wide range of studies on ore sorting. Datun Concentrator currently processes complex sulfide ores in Gejiu Municipality, Yunnan Province, China. The ore contains much higher arsenic than other ores. The run of mine ore is fed to the concentrator to recover copper and tin by bulk flotation and gravity concentration, and then the other sulphides, such as pyrite, arsenopyrite, etc. didn?t get utilized and are discarded as tailings due to the high arsenic content. In order to utilize the pyrites in the tailings, a series of tests have been conducted for finding the solution of arsenic removal from high arsenic-bearing pyrite concentrates through simple flotation process. By means of orthogonal experimental design, the optimized levels and main factors have been found out for the roughing stage. Through selection of the effective in-organic depressants for the arsenic-bearing minerals, the arsenic in the pyrite concentrate can be removed to meet the requirement of sulfuric acid plant (As%=0.5%) by the open flotation process, i.e., one-time roughing and two-time cleaning.

This investigation addressed two products from Samarco?s desliming circuit, namely underflow of cleaning cyclones and underflow of desliming cyclones. The roughing cyclones receive the product of the grinding circuit. The underflow of the roughing cyclones feeds the cleaning cyclones and the overflow feeds the desliming cyclones. The underflows of cleaning and roughing cyclones are combined to constitute the feed of the flotation circuit. These fractions were characterized and a new process route was proposed. The size distributions of the two fractions are quite different. The desliming cyclones underflow presents higher amount of material passing 37 µm and of ultrafines as compared with the cleaning cyclones underflow. Laboratory scale flotation tests were performed in a mechanical machine aiming at comparing the performances of these products in the presence of the reagents employed in the concentrator. Pi-lot scale column flotation yielded enhanced iron recoveries for both products in comparison with those achieved in laboratory mechanical cells, without impairing the concentrate quality. The in-crease in recovery was more significant in the case of the cleaning cyclones underflow. These results suggest the use of columns in the flotation of this product aiming at increasing the overall iron recovery. Nevertheless the results also showed that the use of columns to float the cleaning cyclones underflow should also be taken into consideration. Despite the fact that this product requires a longer residence time in order that the required silica content in the concentrate is achieved, the indication is that higher levels of iron recoveries might be reached. The conclusion is that, due to the different behaviors of the two products, they should be processed in distinct circuits to maximize the iron recovery.

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

Nowadays, the more successful plants are those who have adopted effective and efficient strategies to optimise their plant operation. As the ?heart of the plant? could be viewed as the mil-ling/grinding area, one of the key steps in plant optimisation is, therefore, ensuring the mill is operating properly. In the past, when primary, secondary and tertiary crushers fed material directly to large ball mills, the energy efficiency of the concentrator was determined for the most part by the ball mill operation, whereas now the energy efficiency of a plant often rests largely on the semiau-togenous grinding (SAG) mill operation. As a result, mines have shifted their emphasis in optimization from ball mills to SAG mills. The grinding mill?s energy efficiency essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles, which in turn depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) operates. The essential function of pulp lifter being to transport the broken material and slurry out of the mill, its design optimization therefore affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of AG and SAG grinding mills. This paper will discuss how the optimised design of the pulp lifter/ discharger has helped to eliminate material transport issues such as flow-back and carry-over of slurry and pebbles to in-crease the energy efficiency of SAG mill using the actual operational data.

In the bauxite flotation process for desilication, the middling treatment mode is the important factor to raise the flotation recovery of the preparation concentrate. The middling treatment mode mainly depends on A/S and the size composition. However, similar ratio of A/S should not be the single factor of re-dressing, size composition plays an important role also. Re-dressing the middling mixed with the tailings of concentrated to the rough ground for desilication and the concentrate of scavenged to the fine ground for desilication to raise the recovery of 5.83%, when compared two flow sheet schemes.

Zeolite in some regions or countries of the world have been the subjects of materials for environmental remediation involving the use of removal to heavy metal ions and some organic pollutant as a sorbent because of its capacious ions exchange and huge surface area. This article addresses the equilibrium and kinetics for manganese adsorption using zeolite modified by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) as a sorbent material over a range of pH between 3.4~7.2 with eight different Mn(?) solution concentrations. PHzpc (pH of zero point charge) of the sorbent was examined according to the method proposed by Tripathy and Kanungo, and a value of 6.91 was obtained. The experimental data fit langmuir?s model for the majority of pH and Mn(?) solution concentrations tested (0.92<R2<0.97). The maximal adsorption capacity, qm ascending with pH between 3.4~7.2, rise from 15.01mg?g-1 at 3.4 to 19.46 mg?g-1 at 7.2. Besides, the constant of Freundlich Kf have the same trend with qm, increases with pH ascending. And the sorption intensity, represented by parameter 1/n in Freundlich?s model, is favorable in entire range of metal ions concentration studied. Finally, kinetics data accurately fit to pseudo-second order which indicate that there must be sorption of Mn(?) behavior occurring on inner-sphere of the sorbent.

An albitization granite type tantalum-niobium ore from Jiangxi Province, China was taken as the research object in this paper. The main valuable minerals in this ore are tantalite-columbite and uranmicrolite, and the minerals that can be comprehensively recovered include cassiterite, sulfide minerals, topaz, zinnwaldite, and quartz-feldspar. Based on the research results of process mineralogy, the roughing process of gravity separation for coarse particles combined with flotation for fine particles is proposed. The combined cleaning process of flotation-gravity-magnetic-electric-hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of gravity separation while the combined cleaning process of gravity-flotation- hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of flotation. High intensity magnetic separation is used to separate and recover zinnwaldite and quartz-feldspar from gravity tailings. By mineral processing for the crude ore containing (TaNb)cassiterite concentrate is 0.0003% with a grade of Sn 63.22% and a recovery of Sn 47.42% while the yield of sulfide concentrate is 0.0783% with a grade of Pb 33.15% and Zn 27.09% which can be separated to get lead and zinc concentrate respectively. The yield of topaz concentrate is 0.1545% and the topaz mainly distributed in the size range of -0.4+0.074mm, which can be made into abrasive products of different particle sizes after classification. The yield of zinnwaldite concentrate is 16.91% with a grade of Liwhiteness of 75%, which is a glass-ceramic material of good quality. 2O5 0.0346%, Sn 0.04%, Pb 0.10% and Zn 0.33%, the tantalum-niobium concentrate with a yield of 0.00278%,a grade of (TaNb)2O5 53.61% and a recovery of (TaNb)2O5 44.49% is obtained. And the yield of 2O 1.34% and Rb2O 0.40%. The yield of quartz-feldspar concentrate is 30.42% with a grade of K2O+Na2O 8.98% and Fe2O3 0.11% and a natural All of tantalum, niobium, cassiterite, topaz, zinnwaldite, quartz, and feldspar are recovered effectively.
