The ever increasing demand for energy and the progressive depletion of crude oil resources, have renewed interest in oil shale as an alternative fuel resource. Weathered oil shale samples were assembled from El-Nakheil phosphate mine in Quseir area, Eastern desert, Egypt. The oil shale samples were prepared and analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and optical microscopic techniques. Rock-Eval pyrolysis and total organic carbon were used to study shale hydrocarbon potential. A leaching procedure using inorganic and organic acids was used to selectively dissolve the oil shale associated ash forming minerals. XRD results showed that calcite is the dominant carbonate mineral, whereas primary silicate minerals are quartz and montmorillonite. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations indicated that the organic matter is dispersed throughout the rock matrix. The acid soluble fraction upon leaching was determined to be 37.59 and 42.74 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. The TOC was increased from 20.78 to 29.88 and 34.09 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. "Platinum Australia Limited (“PLA”) is currently undertaking a Feasibility Study into the development of the Panton Platinum Palladium Project located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The Panton Intrusive is a layered, differentiated mafic to ultramafic structurally complex body that has undergone numerous folding and faulting events. This has resulted in a southwesterly plunging synclinal structure some 10 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide.High grade PGM mineralisation is hosted within a number of stratiform chromitite reefs within the ultramafic sequence. The focus of the Feasibility Study is on the Top Reef which is situated approximately 150 metres below the mafic/ultramafic interface. The average true width of this reef is approximately 1.2 metres and the reef has a defined resource is 10.1 million tonnes at an average grade of 6.1 g/t PGM + Au.The Palladium to Platinum ratio of the Top Reef is approximately 1.15:1 and the reef also contains an average of 0.4 g/t Au and 0.3 g/t other PGM’s. The Panton ore is considered refractory in nature and standard flotation techniques achieve a PGM + Au recovery of less than 65% with a concentrate grade of less than 100 g/t PGM + Au. As part of the Feasibility Study Platinum Australia in conjunction with their major shareholder Lonmin Plc developed a new metallurgical process which has achieved an overall PGM + Au recovery of approximately 80% into a high grade PGM concentrate which is suitable for feeding direct to a PGM refinery.THE PANTON PROCESSThe Panton Process incorporates a two-stage Milling and Flotation circuit with no cleaning stages to produce a low grade, high recovery flotation concentrate. Typically the concentrate mass constitutes 25% of the feed and has a PGM + Au grade of 25 g/t.This low-grade concentrate is subjected to calcination in a rotary kiln or fluid bed at a temperature of approximately 400 0C for a period of 60 minutes. This step is designed to render the platinum minerals soluble in cyanide and both the temperature and the duration of calcination are critical to the efficiency of the leaching process."

The paper reports results on sinterability of iron ores from the mines of Tata Steel Limited. The objective was to improve tumbler index (TI) of sinter and its reduction parameters, reduction degradation index (RDI) and reducibility (RI) while maintaining strand productivity same or to improve. Pot sintering experiments were carried out with Joda and Noamundi mines having LOI 3.8% and 2.9% respectively. Sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) was varied in the 2.1 to 2.5 range and its MgO content was kept in the 1.4% to 1.8% range according to the blast furnace requirement. The ignition condition and vacuum was maintained according to the plant practice. The effect of variables namely, granulometric composition of ores vis-à-vis that of sinter mix, bed height, solid fuel, moisture content of green mix on the sintering indices was studied. The productivity with Noamundi ore (26 %+6.3 mm) was lower than that with Joda ore (45% +6.3 mm) at 4% coke in the mix and sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) 2.1. However, with 4% coke (ash 22%) the RDI value was significantly high in case of Noamundi Ore, which decreased significantly to 29% with 5% coke. The size parameter of ore fines and its LOI content do influence the sintering speed and the sinter properties significantly. At 2.1 basicity ratio, the sinter with the Joda ore having coarsergranulometry had highest TI (=70.2%). The RDI (27%) in this case was inferior to that (23.2%) when Joda ores with finer size was sintered. Better RDI with finer sized ore could be attributed to better assimilation of CaO/ MgO with more balanced and uniformly distributed hematite minerals. The size parameter has been inter-influenced by the coke requirement. With the lower mean sized Joda ore the sinter RDI decreased significantly to 23% and the productivity improved to 42.9 T/(sq m*d) when the coke in the mix increased from 4% to 5%. An attempt to reduce the coke in the mix from 5% to 4% with respect to both the ores was not successful as it resulted higher RDI and lower strand productivity. The present study has revealed that sinter RDI improves (decreases) with decrease in the sintering time, while such correlation was absent between TI of sinter and speed of sintering. Corollary to this observation, one can take advantage of other stronger parameters to increase the sintering speed (and hence sinter productivity) without affecting the sinter strength. In the present study higher FeO sinters has displayed excellent RDI, however cold strength of sinter was not correlated with its FeO content. Slag foaming occurs in several pyrometallurgical processes. These processes include steelmaking in basic oxygen steelmaking furnaces and electric arc furnaces as well as various non-ferrous operations like sulphide smelting/converting and base metal slag cleaning. Although slag foaming in steelmaking processes has been extensively researched, little attention has been given to slag foaming in non-ferrous operations. Slag foaming phenomena are complex because often the system consists of three or more phases. With this in mind, factors previously identified as influencing slag foaming were investigated. These include the slag basicity, physical properties of the slag, namely viscosity, surface tension and density, the formation of particles due to undercooling of the slag and the FexO concentration in the slag. The effect of increasing FexO concentration was found to decrease the foam index due to lower viscosities, but higher surface tension depression appears to have led to increased foam index values at high FexO concentrations. The foaming index decreases with increasing basicity, until precipitation of solids occurs. After this point, the foaming index was found to increase with increasing basicity due to increased solids precipitation. In general, increasing amounts of slag-wettable solids led to higher foam indices, but the precise nature of the effect on slag foaming was dependant on the nature of the solid precipitate.

"Froth flotation has been subjected to modelling since the 1930s and there is a large variety of approaches that intend to portray the entire process. Among these, three fundamental models could be considered exhaustive: the Pyke model [1], the Yoon model [2] and the Schwarz and Koh model [3]. The first model makes use of the generalized Sutherland equation collision model, the Dobby-Finch attachment model and its own stability model, the second model considers an extended DLVO approach for the attachment and stability whereas the third model makes use of computational fluid dynamics. Using a scheelite ore as a test case, a specific batch flotation test was repeated ten times and analyzed for chemical assays, mineralogical studies and froth properties. The detailed data are used to feed the three flotation models aforementioned in order to compare the outcomes of the three approaches, their capacity to reflect reality and to predict it. This article intends to pave the path towards reliable process models incorporating in depth mineralogy information, e.g. surface liberation, particle size and particle shape. On the territory Sakha (Yakutia) are located largest in Russian Federation reserves of antimony ores, Sarylakhsk and Sentochansk deposits, amaunt 10% of world stocks of antimony. A processing gold antimony ores Sarylakhsk deposit is carried out on gravitation-flotation circuit to receive gold gravitation concentrate and gold-antimony flotation concentrate with the contents of antimony over 60%. The gold-bearing concentrate is treated on place hydrometallurgicaly to a high-standard product, accepted by gold bank cash department. At the ore dressing plant reached the highest recovery in world in a concentrate of antimony 90%~91.6%, and gold 85.7%~86.0% as a result of scientific research works. Studied the mechanism of interaction cations of metals Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Ag+ with a surface antimonite presented on the basis of modern physical-chemical methods: nuclear quadrupol resonance, x-ray electron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance. The industrial tests of sodium dimethyldithiocarbate were carried out which confirmed high recovery of Sb and As. The leaching Sb2S3 by bacteria Desulfovibro desulfuricans and transformation antimonite in antimony trioxide by Tiobacillus Ferrooxidans improved following cyanidation . The extraction of antimony in a solution 96.0%~98.0% under optimal conditions. The common total extraction in the appropriate commodity products for gold reached 98%, for Sb 96.5%. At a combination of bioprocessing and cyanidation 85.5% of extraction Au was achieved. The new solvents for antimonite were found. Now by the Close Joint-Stock Co ?Sarylach-Antimony? industrial plant is constructed for processing Au-Sb concentrates to receive antimony trioxide and gold from various antimony deposits of Sakha (Yakutia).

"With flotation cells scale-up, the performance of flotation cells is increasingly variated for short-coming and dead zones existing. The residence time distribution which shows the movement of tracers can assess the unexpected flows such as short circuit and dead zone in a flotation cell. In this paper, the residence time distribution of pilot flotation cell is investigated with CFD simulation. Based on the theoretical model, the short-coming probability and dead zone probability are quantitative. The ideal average residence time is similar with the actual average residence time. The mixing effect of the flotation cell approaches the ideal continuous stirred tank reactor. The operating parameters such as speed and feed velocity have complicated influence on residence time distribution. The research would be helpful to understanding flow in flotation cell and improving performances of flotation cell.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is a method which purifies minerals according to difference of physical and chemical surface characters of different mineral particles (Shen, Z., Chen J, 2012). Flotation cell is a key equipment for froth flotation method. The flotation cell performances have great influences on flotation index.It is difficult to evaluate flotation cell how to improve flotation procedure to complexity.The main flotation cell performances are aeration volume, air dispersion, solid suspension and residence time distribution, etc (Shen, Z., Lu, S., 2008). Residence time distribution is an important fluid hydrodynamics which could reveal the flow of pulp, mixing of particles and air bubbles. In the flotation cell, the ideal average residence time of pulp could obtain easily. But the fluid differential units would be different flow paths. The residence time of the fluid differential units is variation and would be longer or less than the average residence time. The residence time distribution would reveal the mixing effect and predict the not ideal flow in the flotation cell such as shorting cutting, dead zone, etc. As we know, the shorting cutting and dead zone would be decreased the real flotation time and it is disadvantage to better flotation effect, especially for large flotation cell. It is impossible to eliminate the not ideal flow totally. It is very important to reveal and decrease the shorting cutting and dead zone probability in the flotation cell."

"During the flotation process of ilmenite and titanaugite with fatty acid as collector, unavoidable ions such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Fe3+ and Fe2+ demonstrate considerable influence on the floatability of the minerals. In this study, flotation test, zeta potential test, and solution chemistry calculation were adopted to investigate the mechanism of how these metal ions affect the floatability of ilmenite and titanaugite in different pH conditions. The results show that in weak acidic solution, Ca2+ and Mg2+ mainly freely exist in the solution with little adsorption on mineral surface, and their reaction ability with oleate ions is weaker than active site on ilmenite surface (Fe), thus they show negligible effect on the flotation of ilmenite; Al3+ shows similar reaction ability with oleate ion compared to Fe3+, which lead to competitive reaction with collector, so the flotation of ilmenite is depressed. While Fe3+ can adsorb on surface of titanaugite in the form of Fe(OH)3, and it shows stronger reaction ability with oleate ion compared with active site on titanaugite surface (Ca and Mg), which proves an activation effect on titanaugite flotation. In alkaline solution, all these five kinds of ions can adsorb on titanaugite surface, and the floatability of titanaugite will be activation. Based on the above analysis, it can be deduced that in the flotation system using fatty acid as collector, the adsorption of metal ions on mineral surfaces and the stronger reaction ability with collector than active site on mineral surfaces, are the two prerequisites for metal ions show activation effect on mineral flotation.INTRODUCTIONIn flotation pulp, the existence of metal ions is often inevitable. There are two sources for these metal ions: the first part is generated in grinding and flotation process due to the oxidation, reduction, corrosion or dissolution of minerals or grinding medium; the second part is from the flotation water or the addition because of the technology need. The metal ions in the pulp have a considerable influence on mineral flotation. Earlier researches are focus on the activation effect of mineral floatation by metal ions to obtain a higher flotation efficiency, many effective activators were found, such as Cu2+ activated sphalerite, Pb2+ activation wolframite, and Ca2+ activation quartz flotation, these metal ions have become the commonly used activators in industrial production. And many studies attempted to explain the mechanism of how metal ions affect the floatability of minerals. James (James et al, 1972) suggests that metal hydroxide precipitation is the main component leads to activation effect, while the study of Fuerstenau (Fuerstenau, 1976) showed that the metal ion hydroxyl complexes played significant role. In recent years, the reuse of mineral processing wastewater has attracted more attention (Rao et al, 1989; Liu et al, 2013; Wang et al, 2014), as a main component in flotation wastewater, the influence of “unavoidable ions” on flotation process still need in-depth study."

This paper describes a new magnetic separator integrating dynamic permanent magnetic force, gravity and flow dynamics to enhance the quality of the iron concentration. This equipment can increase the grade of concentrate by controlling the formation of magnetic agglomerations to reject most gangue. Test results indicates that the compound force field separator can be applied in improving the quality of iron concentrate and has a wide range of potential market applications. Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. "Gas dispersion properties of sodium salts of 6, 12 and 18-carbon fatty acids (hexanoic, lauric and oleic acid) were investigated as a function of pH. A strong effect of pH was observed on gas dispersion properties of fatty acids. At high pH for 12 and 18 carbon fatty acids, at which these surfactants formed a true solution, the gas dispersion properties were similar to those of MIBC. In the case of sodium hexanoate, which has a much higher solubility than the longer chain fatty acids and therefore does not form precipitates, the gas dispersion properties of this surfactant were strongly enhanced in the acidic pH range, where hexanoic acid was fully associated. This result is an indication that undissociated hexanoic acid is much more surface-active than anionic hexanoate. Only a small effect of the surfactant chain length on gas dispersion properties of the tested reagents was observed. The measured critical coalescence concentration (CCC95) values increase slightly by decreasing chain length and range from 5.8 x 10-5 mol/L (17.7 mg/L) for sodium oleate to 7.2 x 10-5 mol/L (16 mg/L) for sodium laurate at pH 10 and 1.9 x 10-4 mol/L (26 mg/L) for sodium hexanoate at pH 3.7. These are compared to CCC95 of MIBC, which is measured to be 8 x 10-5 mol/L (8 mg/L). The soluble molecular species were recognized as the most effective species in preventing bubble coalescence."

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust and nodule ores from seamount areas contain volcanic and sedimentary rocks as substrate or nuclei and these ores require mineral processing to remove the substrate/nuclei rock before smelting. This paper reviews the results of jig separation and air table treatment for the coarse fraction and flotation and hybrid jigging for the fine fraction. Using these techniques substrate/nuclei rock was removed from the cobalt-rich ferromanganese oxide components. The mineralogical properties and metallurgical treatment methods including hydrometallurgical treatment of low grade ore is also reviewed.

Banded hematite jasper (BHJ) containing 45.2% Fe, 32.64% SiO2, 0.63 % Al2O3 and 1.25 % LOI is found difficult to beneficiate either by magnetic or flotation techniques due to fine intergrowth of jasper with hematite. Phase transformation by reduction roasting with activated charcoal followed by low intensity magnetic separation to achieve a suitable iron concentrate has been attempted in this study. The mineralogy of the ore and different roasted products has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to understand the reduction mechanism. The magnetite formation is observed at 850ºC while metallic iron appeared at a higher temperature. The effects of reduction variables such as reduction time (30-270 min), temperature (750-1050ºC), and reductant (1-12 %) using activated charcoal are studied. An iron concentrate with 64.65% Fe and 55.8% recovery could be obtained under optimum conditions of temperature: 850ºC, time: 1.5 h, and reductant: 6% by weight.

The aim of the present paper is to review the current technologies for arsenic removal in the copper metallurgical industry, and to show the progress made with some promising emerging strategies, involving the pre-treatment of copper-arsenic concentrates by selective flotation or by alkaline leaching with Na2S-NaOH solutions. The advantages of alkaline leaching are the selective dissolution of arsenic and antimony, the high extraction yield, and the practically nil loss of copper, which remains in the clean copper concentrate as a CuS residue. Alkaline ?cured? ? a procedure similar to ?acid-cured? in conventional leaching ? improves arsenic extraction and reagent consumption, making this an interesting technology for the treatment of high As-Sb concentrates. In light of recent advances on the selective flotation of enargite and tennantite, the importance of redox conditions to control the flotation/depression of enargite-tennantite from copper sulfides has been well established. However, problems of selectivity must still be solved. Additionally, the limitation imposed in some cases by the need to recover the molybdenum by-product must be considered. The application of selective flotation to obtain a high-arsenic or ?dirty? concentrate and its sub-sequent treatment by the alkaline leaching process is suggested.

"The purpose of the research is to monitor ball mill filling by means of signals usually measured in its electrical drive. The method is based on the mill torque estimated from rotor speed and induction motor stator voltage and currents. New signal processing is presented in both time and frequency domain for measurements in a dry laboratory ball mill. Statistical analysis is applied to time series resulting in good correlation to mill filling. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and power spectral density (PSD) also resulted in an accurate filling indicator. The proposed method does not need any sensor to be installed directly on the mill and requires only sensors usually available for motor control purposes. The experimental results showed that the method have potential to be used to construct an automatic system for monitoring operational variables in ball mills. The aim of this monitoring is to improve energy efficiency, reliability and productivity.INTRODUCTION Recently, a great number of papers have pointed the importance of ball mill filling monitoring and also of grinding control (Lu, et al., 2014) (Ramasamy, et al., 2005) (Tsamatsoulis, 2014) (Zhou, et al., 2009). Additionally, great amount of control techniques have also been presented with several complexity degrees (Tsamatsoulis, 2014). According to Eremenko (2015) the lack of effective and accurate methods for fill level measurement is the main reason that makes mill optimal control so complicated. It happens because nonlinearity, long time delay and time varying features of the ball mill turns difficult to develop a truly efficient method for monitoring filling. At the same time, fill level has a determining role in charge motion and consequently on particle breakage. For low levels of filling many energy is expended in impacts with very low breakage efficiency. Those impacts can also damage mill liner. In contrast, high levels of filling causes damping effects that reduces breakage and can also affect energy consumption. Based on this it is conclusive that fill level measurement of ball mills is an important issue for grinding efficiency. This fill level information can be used for operators to control ball mills and also for engineers to run simulations and improve confidence levels of circuit designs (Shi, 2016)."

The ball level and pulp load play a key role in the operation of industrial scale ball mills. These two operating variables have a significant influence on the performance of the ball mill and any attempts to optimize these devices require manipulating either one or both of these variables. There are several models that can be employed to perform simulations to optimize the performance of industrial ball mills. However, most of these models require ball load and pulp load measurements as inputs to calibrate the model. The changes suggested by the simulator also provide operating regimes that involve moving either the ball level or pulp load and sometimes both of these variables. A ball mill model coded in JKSimMet was used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the secondary ball mill at Waterval concentrator in South Africa. The results show that the perfect mixing ball mill model can be used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the performance of the secondary ball mill.

The percentage of leached zinc in massive zinc oxide ores (11.7% Zn, >2 mm) is up to 73.3 % in 120 days. Alternatively, crushed to -0.154 mm, mixed with cement 5% (wt), pelletized and solidified. The diameters of the pellets obtained are between 5 mm to 8 mm. When the pellet solidification periods are 3 days, 10 days and 45 days respectively, the alkaline leaching rates of zinc in the pellets are up to 95.8%, 89.1% and 76.4% respectively. Decreasing the solidification time can re-duce reaction time, increase dissolution of zinc in pellets and lower the effect of initial zinc concentration on leaching rate. The experiment results show that the minimum solidification time is three days, and the kinetic study indicates that alkaline leaching of the low grade zinc oxide pellets is controlled by the diffusion of the leach liquor through the gangue layer in the whole leach process, and the apparent rate constants are 3.33×10-2 day-1, 9.18×10-3 day-1, 5.82×10-3 day-1 respectively.

The large-scale 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was first applied in Donggua Hill Copper Mine which processes 13,000 tons ore per day. The crushing and grinding circuit went into operation in the Donggua Hill plant in October 2004. However, at the beginning, the productivity of grinding only reached 58% of the capacity expected and some indexes of the crushing and milling circuit didn?t meet the requirements. Especially, the total load of the 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was up to 34%~41% (25%~30% designed)and some hard rocks with the size of 25~70mm, which can?t be treated as a medium or even would be crushed and make larger ores or steal balls necessary, were seriously accumulated in the SAG mills. Consequently, they occupied the effective mill volume which in turn reduced the efficiency of the SAG mills and increase the energy consumption. In order to solve the problem of accumulation in the SAG mill and increase its productivity, some measures were taken, such as passing more hard pebble through the grate at mill dis-charging end, changing the type of steal balls and so on. And the results showed that these measures functioned well and had good effects, which is that the filling percentage of the SAG mills has been reduced to 26%~29% from 34%~41% with the composition of particle sizes improved a lot and the productivity increased by 77.4% reaching up to 13,380 tons per day.
