In the last two years, C-CORE has developed a new seabed sampler directed specifically at obtaining samples from hard or compacted bottoms such as are typical of marine placer deposits. Samples are required for appraisal of concentrations of saleable commodities, and for determination of levels of biological indicators in the deposits. Recently C-CORE and the University of Victoria have been comparing the performance of the Scott/C-CORE sampler with that of the Van Veen sampler often used for biological sampling. Initial trials of the Scott/C-CORE sampler in 1992 at the WestGold mining site, Nome, Alaska, were described by Jewitt et al. at the 1993 UMI. Since that time the sampler has been modified to prevent overfilling, and to limit turbulent flow of water across the top of the sampler buckets when the sampler is recovered with partly-open buckets. The modifications included shoes to prevent sampler overfill, and flexible rubber shielding over top and sides of the sampler to prevent water circulation. Samples have been taken with both samplers in two field areas, one at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland, and the other near Long Pond in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland. In each area multiple samples were taken with both sampler types, and the samples processed immediately to establish the types and quantities of marine organisms that were present. Species identification is expected to be complete by late August.

Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.

"Seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits are a new frontier in global metal resources. Hydrothermal chimney’s (black smokers) precipitate Cu, Zn, Ag and Au rich from hot fluids (>250°C) during interaction with cold seawater ~2-4°C. Here we compare the sulfide mineralogy and geochemistry of Cu-sulfide chimney samples from two different tectonic locations: Solwara 1, a Cu-rich, transitional arc-back arc (Arc-BA) type SMS ore deposit and; Ashadze-1, a Cu-rich, ocean ridge type SMS deposit (Hannington et al., 2011).This work represents the first stage of a project aimed at investigating and understanding the significance of high Cu concentrations in SMS systems. Comparing these particular systems is significant because they share critical similarities despite being located at different seafloor depths, hosted in different rocks and are located in two different endmember tectonic environments. Critical similarities include: 1) age of mineralization, ~6000 years to current (Firstova et al., 2016; Johns et al., 2014); and 2) high copper contents, with chalcopyrite dominating sulfide mineralization (Firstova et al., 2016; Lipton, 2012). The reason for high Cu concentrations in both of these locations is still not entirely understood. The youthfulness (<6000y to current) of both locations is important because it reduces the possibility of increased zone refining, allowing us to understand the source characteristics better. This research will advance our understanding of the copper systematics of SMS systems by investigating and comparing the mineralogical and geochemical signatures from two, Cu-rich, end-member type SMS sites."

SUMMARY The Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) hosts the most valuable deposit of polymetallic nodules yet discovered. Understanding the geology of this deposit is key to its effective exploration and mining. Nautilus Minerals (via its subsidiary Tonga Offshore Mining Limited; TOML) has been progressing its understanding of the relationship between seafloor morphology/structure and nodule abundance/morphology, both locally (within its contract areas), and globally (across the CCZ and the span of its contract areas of almost 70% of the CCZ). We present the first results of a project with the aim of developing a method to quickly and accurately map seafloor morphology/structure (Tectonic Subcomponent scale) without the necessity for high resolution seafloor multibeam data. Furthermore, the results presented here will allow a first attempt in understanding the relationship between seafloor geomorphologically-defined zones and plate-scale tectonics of the CCZ and adjacent plate segments. INTRODUCTION A relationship between the type of geochemical active layer and nodule abundance/morphology has long been understood (ISA, 2010). Consideration of the range of differing nodule types found within, but especially between, the TOML contract areas allowed Parianos and Pomee (2017) to refine this relationship further via interpreted thickness and dynamism of the geochemically active layer. The scale of the deposit, both in terms of space and time is staggering (a 10-20 cm thick deposit, spanning almost 4500 km, varying within a circa 10 Ma period), but a segment wide geological map may one day prove to reflect controls on nodule formation and distribution.

From July 29 to September 15, 2004, the 178th cruise of the R/V Sonne took place under the KOMEX program in the Sea of Okhotsk. One of the cruise objectives was to dredge two different kinds of seamounts: 1 ? underwater volcanoes from the north slope of the Kurile Basin; 2 ? a seamount formed by tectonic (non volcanic) processes from the Kashevarov Trough. The underwater volcanoes are young edifices (0.84 ± 06 Ma, Baranov et al., 2002) with heights ranging from 150 to 300 m. Tops of the volcanoes are located at depth of 1260 to 2340 meters. The volcanic edifices are formed by olivine-clinopyroxene-plagioclase basalts. Dredge samples are covered by Fe-Mn crusts up to 40 mm thick. The seamount from the Kashevarov Trough is a tilted block. The height of the seamount is about 400 m and its top is located at a depth of 960 meters. Biotite hornfels, conglomerates, granodiorites, dropstones, and Fe-Mn crusts were recovered there. The thicknesses of crusts are up to 150 mm. Fe-Mn crusts from the underwater volcanoes differ from Fe-Mn crusts from the Kasevarov Trough seamount in morphology as well as in mineralogical and chemical compositions. "Ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) nodules and crusts are prime targets for future deep-sea mining ventures due to their unusual enrichment of critical metals, such as Ni, Co, Cu, Ti, Te, Zr, Hf, Nb, Y, and REE. These metals are used in an ever increasing variety of high- and green-tech applications such as alloys, batteries for hybrid cars, fiber-optic cables, or liquid-crystal displays.1 Recovery and processing of these deposits will most likely be cost-intensive and require new solutions.2 Thus, innovative approaches towards the development of sustainable metallurgical processes represent one component that can positively affect the marine mining value chain. Dynamic mineral recrystallization of Fe- Mn oxide phases is a geochemical process that may have notable potential for future hydrometallurgical applications.Our research focuses on Mn oxides – potent trace metal scavengers with high sorptive capacity3 – and biogeochemical mechanisms that control Fe-Mn nodule and crust formation, alteration, and trace element enrichment. Biogeochemical redox cycling of Mn is characterized by microbial oxidation of aqueous Mn(II) to Mn(III,IV) oxides and (a)biotic reduction of these oxides to Mn(II)aq. During this cycling dissolved Mn(II) is in direct contact with solid-phase Mn(III,IV) oxides and can back-react via abiotic pathways (e.g., 4 and references therein). This results in continuous dynamic recrystallization of the Mn mineral substrate through coupled dissolution (trace metal release) – reprecipitation (trace metal incorporation) processes.4 We recently demonstrated in new experiments, that Ni is cycled during manganite recrystallization. It has been shown that, although Ni readily undergoes mineral-fluid repartitioning in the absence of Mn(II)aq, dissolved Mn(II) significantly catalyzes Ni exchange between solid phase and solution. Over a period of 50 days about 30 percent of the Ni atoms in Ni-substituted manganite (natural abundance composition) were exchanged with a 62Ni(II)aq isotope tracer at pH 7.5. Based on these outcomes we employed similar techniques to investigate the impact of dynamic recrystallization on Mn oxide phases in deep-sea ferromanganese nodules and crusts from three circum-Australian locations (South Tasman Rise, Lord Howe Rise, Coral Sea) and the Central Pacific Basin."

This is a framework study financed by the Maritime Innovation Programme of The Netherlands and several institutions actively involved in the research of the environmental impact of deep sea mining; IHC Mining, MTI Holland, Delft University of Technology, NIOZ, IMARES, Boskalis Westminster, AllSeas and TNO. For this framework study the following mining activities have been identified to be relevant to assess the ecological impact of a deep sea mining operation: a) excavation, b) tailings return, c) vertical transport, d) vessel operations, e) ore transport and f) general operations. For this paper, only one mining activity has been selected as an example for the assessment of ecological effects. This is one of the main activities introduced by the new technology envisaged for developing deep sea mining: tailings return.

Exploring for minerals on the seabed is challenging and expensive – and the ability to collect representative sub surface samples is essential. The research project MarMine led by NTNU has together with Seattle based Williamson and Associates developed and tested an ROV-based drill rig for mineral (seafloor massive sulfides and crusts) and rock sampling. The ROCS system is a single stroke drill and is simple, robust and possible to use from various larger ROVs. For the vehicle to provide a stable platform, the vertical bollard pull of the ROV and the vehicle mass are important variables. The developed drill uses a thin wall drill bit and barrel and operates at high RPM to reduce the required down weight and drilling moments. The system also contains an emergency release to be used if the core barrel is stuck. The drill is hydraulically powered with cylinders operating the tower and a rotation unit. It can rapidly be modified to provide samples from softer samples like unconsolidated material. At the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge, a work class ROV was deployed with the drill mounted for testing at 2700 m depth in basalt rock. The recovery from the system was above 80%. Such core samples can be used for chemical analyses of metal and mineral grades, mineralogy and rock mechanical testing. The system provides a probing tool for marine mineral exploration, with low cost, low operational complexity and low risk. Proper resource estimation requires drilling deeper into the deposit, but the short core samples provided by the ROCS provide valuable a priori information planning for more extensive drilling campaigns.

Bottom sediment sampling by means of a box corer, as a direct method of deep seabed exploration for polymetallic nodules, is the most comprehensive way to obtain various types of geological information on points forming a network of stations. However, direct information is lacking from areas separating those stations and has to be approximated by interpolation or extrapolation, which leads to uncertainties. Sediment sampling with a gravity or piston corer can provide information on the superficial, up to 4 m thick, part of the sedimentary cover. As opposed to box coring, gravity or piston coring provides no information on nodule abundance. Information for unsampled areas can be gained by application of remote techniques of exploration. The techniques of choice in visualising nodule-rich fields, nodule-free areas, hard rock outcrops and other obstacles for seafloor mining involve using sonar and continuous deep sea (CDS) camera. Seafloor mapping can be rendered with two major sonar types: the side scan sonar used to obtain seafloor imagery and multibeam sonar for bathymetric data; the two types are usually combined and work with an intermediate frequency profiler. Photo-profiling by means of a deep sea towed camera provides a series of seafloor photographs, each supplemented with information on the area covered by each frame, including the nodule abundance. Remote techniques have been quite frequently applied by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) in nodule field exploration. Recently, geoacoustic techniques (side scan sonar + profiler) and CDS were applied for exploration of IOM?s first prime area H11 (5372 km2) on 6 transects. During the IOM-2009 cruise, a total of 295 km of geoacoustic transects and 344 km of photo-transects were surveyed. The data obtained were processed with the aid of earlier information produced by multibeam sonar surveys. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of remote techniques, particularly with regard to application of the towfish device, for geological and geotechnical applications in exploration for polymetallic nodules.

The United Nations Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention includes provisions (Article 76) for establishing the outer limits of a coastal State&apos;s continental shelf and for denoting the seaward extent of sovereign rights over natural resources. Determination of a coastal State&apos;s continental margin, according to Article 76, must consider eight factors: 1. The territorial sea baseline 2. The 2,500-meter isobath 3. The foot of the continental slope 4. A line 200 nautical miles seaward of the territorial sea baseline 5. A line seaward of the foot of the continental slope connecting the points where sediment thickness divided by distance to the foot of the slope equals .01 6. A line 60 nautical miles seaward of the foot of the continental slope 7. A line 100 nautical miles seaward of the 2,500-meter isobath 8. A line 350 nautical miles seaward of the territorial sea baseline Figure 1 shows the preliminary limits for each of the Article 76-based definitions for a portion of the U.S. Atlantic continental shelf. The additional areas gained beyond the 200- nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are highlighted. The first three factors are baselines from which the distance provisions of Article 76 are measured. Factors 4-8 are distance- from-baseline provisions for establishing the continental shelf limits. Factor 5, also known as the Depth of Sediment Limit or "Irish Formula", was calculated using sediment thickness data from seismic linesand isopach maps. All other factors were determined from digital hydrographic data. The Depth of Sediment Limit is the most advantageous method for the area shown in Figure 1. It is especially useful for introverted coastlines such as the Georgia Embayment and New York Bight areas. "We report here on current topics of our project, based on the results of recent cruises and laboratory analysis, about the diversity of compositions and configurations of the hydrogenetic ferromanganese deposits in several Northwestern Pacific Seamounts. This recent research has discovered important aspects of these deposits regarding the mode of variation with water depth, topography and substrate geology, possible bacterial mediation, temporal variation with age in mineralogy, and major and minor element chemistry. All cruises and analysis have been supported by the facilities and staff of the Japan Agency of Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal resources Corporation (JOGMEC), Geological Survey of Japan, and Kochi Core Center (KCC) using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), a monitored rock drilling system, dredges, and manned-submersibles in the NW Pacific seamounts,The results indicate that most of the rock outcrops on the slopes, shoulders, and much of flat tops are covered with maximum 10-cm thick crusts, but the thickness, metal content, and microstructural properties are not always uniform over the seamounts, but variable in space and time. The micro-stratigraphic description of whole-rock samples indicates a history of deposition and sedimentation, which control the diversity in bulk composition and abundance caused by the variable incorporation of iron-manganese precipitates into the deposits during variable environmental conditions. We conclude that hydrogenetic precipitation of iron-manganese oxide has taken place for more than 20 million years at a growth rate about 4-6 mm/my, in water depths below 1000m. The results indicate a fairly continuous and constant metal deposition since the middle Miocene age or older to the present. Our case study of geological sciences at a model seamount within the Japanese EEZ suggests that scientific knowledge is useful and essential in exploring mineral deposits, economic estimation, and designing systems, if supported by well-combined geological and oceanographic and biological research. The distribution map of ferromanganese deposits and geological map will be published soon in 2017 to be issued by the Geological Survey of Japan."

Magmatic-hydrothermal activity in the South-West Pacific and SE Asian island arcs during the Tertiary has created a premier copper-gold province with numerous, commercially attractive base and precious metal deposits. This activity continues to the present day, especially in submarine sectors of those arcs where modern technologies enable direct observation of ore-forming processes in action. Until recently, however, the volcanic island arcs of Indonesia escaped such attention. The Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity (IASSHA), involved three cruises with KR Baruna Jaya VIII, focused particularly on the Sangihe arc; Tomini Bay, Sulawesi, including the vicinity of isolated Colo volcano; and the Sunda Strait including the neighborhood of Krakatau volcano. IASSHA 2001 and 2003 cruises studied the arc and behind-arc sectors of the Sangihe volcanic island chain extending northwards from Quaternary volcanoes on the northeastern tip of Sulawesi, near Manado, to the Kawio Islands near the border with the Philippines (Fig. 1). This chain lies above a west-dipping Wadati-Benioff seismic zone whose subduction trench is obscured by accreted sediments and mélange, forming the Talaud-Mayu ridge. West of the main active chain and extending northwards from Manado there is a subparallel ridge (The Manado Line) surmounted by a number of high (>2000 m) seamounts of uncertain age.

East Diamante is a submarine volcano in the southern Mariana arc that is a complex caldera about 10 km x 5 km (elongated ENE-WSW), and breached on its northern and southwestern sectors. A large field of barite-sulfide mounds was discovered in June 2009 and revisited in July 2010 aboard the R.V. Natsushima using the Hyper-dolphin ROV. The mound field occurs on the NE flank of a cluster of resurgent domes inside the caldera. The mound field extends for more than 100 m long and is about 30 m wide, and is aligned along a NE-SW rift valley. A sample of dacite yielded a 40Ar/39Ar age of 20,000±400 years. Individual mounds are typically 1-3 m tall and 0.5-2 m wide, with lengths from about 3 to more than 5 m. The mounds are composed of barite-dominant layers interbedded with Zn-sulfide-rich barite layers. Rare inactive spires and chimneys cap some mounds. Fe and Mn oxides are currently forming small (<1 m diameter, ~0.5 m tall) subsidiary mounds on the top of some of the sulfate/sulfide mounds and drape the flanks of others. Both diffuse- and focused-flow fluids emanate from the subsidiary oxide mounds. Ages of the basal sulfate/sulfide mounds cluster around 4,000 years old based on 226Ba/Ba, whereas the oxides are less than 5 years old based on 228Th/228Ra. Most mound and chimney samples are dominated by barite and amorphous silica; sulfides occur in variable amounts that in decreasing order of abundance include sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Anglesite, cerrusite, and a Pb phosphate occur as late-stage interstitial phases. Some mound samples have fragmental textures; layered clasts composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite may have been derived from collapsed chimneys. Despite the abundance of barite, samples contain high concentrations of Zn (to 23 Wt.%), Pb (to 13 wt.%), Ag (to 500 ppm), and Au (to 15 ppm). Copper is enriched in a few mounds samples, up to 3 wt.%, but is typically <1 wt.%. Other significant metal enrichments include Sb (to 1320 ppm), Cd (to 1180 ppm), and Hg (to 55 ppm).

The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel&apos;s levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.

Column flotation is a promising technique for processing as-mined, cobalt-rich, ferromanganese crust to separate the valuable crust component from barren substrate-rock, either aboard ship or within the water column. Column flotation testing was carried out in a seawater medium using samples obtained from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the mid-Pacific Ocean near Johnston Atoll. The collector reagent was a mixture of diesel fuel, fatty acid, and sulfonate previously developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for crust flotation using conventional flotation cells. Results are dependent upon particle size and reagent dosage, especially *as these factors affect froth volume and stability. Column flotation results are compared with previous studies in conventional cells. An overview of how column flotation might be applied in an offshore mining and processing system is given.

The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), Marine Geology and Geophysics Division and co-located World Data Center-A for MGG archives and distributes global marine sediment data from U.S. and international sources. NGDC is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. NGDC offers a variety of digital marine sediment data sets including sediment descriptions, textural analyses, geochemistry, paleontology, paleomagnetism, and well logs. Some data sets are compiled by outside sources and sent to NGDC for distribution; many are received under exchange agreements and through the World Data Center system. Other data sets are compiled at NGDC, frequently in cooperation with other government agencies or academic institutions. One of the best examples of the latter is the Index to Marine Geological Samples, or "Core Curators&apos; Database".

Studies of benthic recolonization following the cessation of dredging in U.K. waters and elsewhere are limited, and are largely confined to experimental circumstances. Investigations of the physical and biological status of licensed areas in the U.K. at various times following cessation of commercial dredging are very limited and so judgments as to the likely progress towards environmental restoration and the time-scales are often based on predictions rather than real data. This study was established to address this deficiency by assessing the status of seabed substrata and associated benthic fauna within and outside areas where dredging had ceased and to conduct follow up sampling to monitor progress towards full recolonization.

Alaska&apos;s expansive continental shelf represents future opportunities for marine mineral development. Although today&apos;s metal prices and subsidized foreign mineral production continue to discourage industry investment in marine exploration worldwide, the longer term outlook is one of increasing costs on-shore with a dwindling land-base available on which to search for and extract minerals. Likely, the generations of the 21st century will increasingly recover their minerals from the sea-floor. Though largely unexplored, Alaska potentially represents a major port ion of the U.S. marine resources. Several factors demonstrate this. First, the Alaskan OCS is huge; 74% of the entire United States&apos; continental shelf lies off of Alaska, and 54% of the U.S. coastline is Alaskan. Combined with the jurisdiction waters of the Soviet Far East, the Bering-Chukchi shelf is one of the world&apos;s largest tracts of shallow water. Second, Alaska is situated at the northwestern terminus of the mineral-rich American cordillera. From Chile to Alaska, major on-shore deposits of precious and base metals, ferroalloys, and industrial minerals are found in the tectonically disturbed belts of the cordillera. In 1988, the western U.S. cordilleran states produced 70% of this country&apos;s mineral output (excluding construction materials). Throughout the cordillera&apos;s entire 10,000 mile length, the rock units strike largely parallel to the coastline, but in Alaska they extend directly offshore and onto the continental shelf. The Afanasiy-Nikitin Seamounts (ANS) in Eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean (Figure 1) are shown to be the exposed part of the presently buried 85°E Ridge system under the Bengal Fan sediment and were emplacement around 75-80 m.y. ago (Krishna, 2003). The first recovery of ferromanganese crusts from the ANS was made during 1994, and the samples (Figure 2) provided important clues on the evolution of this seamount (Banakar et al., 1997).
