The Company Bauer Maschinen is very well known in the field of specialist foundation equipment. In the diaphragm wall market, we have experiences both in manufacturing and executing projects all over the world since 1984. We have a population of more than 300 units working all over the world in all climate and soil conditions. Especially for hard soil and rock conditions, we have developed several cutting tools and systems to optimize the performance, e. g. the “flipper tooth” Besides the execution of land based foundation projects, we have performed our firs offshore project with the trench cutter in 1994. Our task was to take samples out of the alluvial soil off the coast of Namibia in a water depth of max. 200 m. We converted a drill vessel and launched the cutter thru the moon pool. The samples had a cross section of 3,40 m² and a max. depth of 5 m. They were used to estimate the content of diamonds. The first time, we reached the seabed of the deep sea was together with our seafloor exploration rig MeBo, where we can take cores up to a length of 160 m in a maximum water depth of 4000 m. With our customer MARUM, we have done several expeditions since 2005. The last expedition took place in the Black Sea to explore gas hydrates.

"There are many reasons invoked when discussing the relevance of deep-sea mining minerals. The shift towards more focus on renewable energy (“the green shift”) will not be possible without more materials coming from the mining industry. The increasing population, and thus increased number of consumers, will lead to an increase of the mineral demand. It has been established that recycling will not satisfy the need for more minerals by itself. Meanwhile, land mineral resources - such as copper – become every day more complex to extract. The question of the deep-sea minerals exploitation’s viability needs to be studied now. Within the framework of feasibility studies, various topics such as environment, technologies and operations management must be addressed. Recognising deep-sea mining as a hybrid activity - taking from the mining, maritime and the offshore oil and gas industries - it is deemed too complex for a global assessment. Each deep-sea mining environment is worth its separate study.Norway is recognised as a seafarer nation. Looking towards the sea and driven by the will to thrive on the Blue Economy, Norway decided to investigate the case for deep-sea minerals on its Extended Continental Shelf. The MarMine project is a materialisation of this endeavour. The Norwegian case will address its own particularities such as a respectable water depth, the arctic environment, the remoteness to shore support and an environmental aware population as well as subsequent policies."

To effectively manage the potential environmental impacts of deep-sea mining of manganese nodules, we need to know substantially more about the effects of sediment redeposition on abyssal communities and the time scales of recovery from such effects. As an initial step towards a predictive understanding of mining impacts on abyssal benthos, we are conducting a series of biological studies within the framework of the Benthic Impact Experiment (BIE). Mining operations will cause resuspension of sediments across extensive areas of the abyssal Pacific Ocean. The resultant plumes likely will produce redeposition layers, ranging from a few sediment grains in thickness to > 1 cm, over thousands of square kilometers of the seafloor. The impact of such redeposition on abyssal benthic communities is exceedingly difficult to predict. While there has been speculation that redeposition of 1 mm or less will exert deleterious effects, there has been very little testing, and the BIE will provide the first in situ test of redeposition impacts. In a series of cruises before and after controlled resedimentation, we are collecting biological samples to determine the undisturbed state of the ecosystem, the immediate effects of disturbance, and the time-course of recovery resulting from quantified levels of resedimentation.

In the western Woodlark Basin, propagation of seafloor spreading is occurring directly into the continental crust of Papua new Guinea. The spreading is not strictly in a back-arc tectonic setting, rather it appears associated with microplate rotations related to the complex convergence of the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates in the southeastern Pacific region. Volcanic rocks along the western Woodlark spreading axis range from normal mid- ocean ridge basalts to basaltic andesites with back-arc geochemical affinities. Rare peralkaline rhyolites also occur. Hydrothermal deposits occur at a basaltic andesite volcano located on the neovolcanic zone near its westernmost propagating tip. Franklin Seamount is a 250m-high cone constructed largely of pillow lavas and talus which sits astride a 450m-high ridge of similar lavas oriented subnormal to the spreading direction. At its crest, 2150m below sea level, there is a 100m-deep caldera.

The discovery of chemosynthetic-based ecosystems at hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean was arguably one of the most important findings in biological science in the latter half of the 20th century. More than 100 vent fields have been documented along the 60,000 km global mid-ocean ridge system. Over 500 new animal species, over 80% of which are endemic to the vents, have been described from this environment. Unusual, highly evolved symbioses between invertebrates and chemolithautotrophic bacteria are common at vents, producing concentrations of biomass that rival the most productive ecosystems on Earth. Hydrothermal vents ecosystems, because of their very limited area and the presence of endemic species, are highly vulnerable to human disturbance. Mining for polymetallic sulphide deposits poses the greatest future physical threat to hydrothermal vents and their biological communities. However, there is more immediate concern about the impact of concentrated scientific research activities. Some sites have been revisited by several research expeditions per year for more than a decade. As vent sites become the focus of intensive, long-term research, oversight organizations are discussing mitigative measures to avoid significant loss of habitat or oversampling of populations. Canada recently became the first national jurisdiction to set aside a hydrothermal vent site as a Marine Protected Area.

"Significant uncertainty is associated with predicting future trends in deep-sea mining projects, especially when attempting to assess markets for associated products such as ships and collectors. In order to help European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to appraise the future market share of deep-sea mining equipment, a methodology was developed that allows to assess and predict equipment turnover. This study presents a market analysis, which evaluates the scale of the potential market for deep-sea mining equipment for seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) and seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) based on six key drivers: (i) the worldwide deposit potential of SMnN and SMS deposits, (ii) the profitability of deep-sea mining projects, (iii) the metal market of seven associated metals (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag, Co, Ni, Mn), (iv) the current legal and environmental situation in the Area, (v) investment and maintenance costs, and (vi) a competitor analysis.Figures for the different key drivers are based on public reports and expert interviews. Large uncertainties as well as contrasting views and expectations resulted in different options (scenarios) for the future development of the deep-sea mining market. Several scenarios were developed and based on the future number of “mining projects” in the short-term (2022-2041) and the long-term (2042-2061). The number of such mining projects has been calculated based on the combined analysis of the different key drivers.In the scope of this study, the definition of a “mining project” is a deep-sea mining operation for SMnN or SMS lasting for 20 years. This operation includes the purchase of a set of deep-sea mining equipment consisting of a mining support vessel, a vertical transport system and the seafloor mining equipment, in line with other work within the EU FP7 project “Blue Mining” (GA No. 604500)."

Ancient volcanogenic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au massive sulfide ores commonly have associated with them along strike and in the immediate hanging wall a distinctive sediment that is thin, usually cherty and metal enriched, and generally referred to as an "exhalite horizon" or "tuffaceous exhalite". Typical examplks include the 13 Ma tetsusekiei of the Kuroko deposits of Japan (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1983, Econ. Geol.) and the 2700 Ma contact tuffs of Noranda, Canada (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1989, Can. J. Earth Sci.) and Key Tuffite of Mattagami, Canada (Liaghat and McLean, 1992, Explor. Min. Geol.). Attempts to use trace element distributions as lithogeochemical guides to ore have been largely unsuccessful. Exhalites have been considered to be the products of seafloor hydrothermal activity that is peripheral to the main ore-producing vents. However, large actively-forming polyrnetallic sulfide deposits at the Explorer mid-ocean basalt spreading ridge (1 850 m depth) in the NE Pacific and the eastern Manus back-arc dacitic spreading center (1650 m depth) in the western Pacific have demonstrated that the exhalite horizons are more likely produced by fallout of particulates from the main hydrothermal plume. In a typical hydrothermal plume, grains of >27 µm represent up to 97% of the mass (although only 2% of the population) of the particulates and are calculated by Stokes equations to fall from the plume to the seafloor within a few krn of their source. The particles are primarily composed of anhydrite, barite, amorphous silica, iron oxyhydroxides and metal sulfides and oxides. Plumes are subject to bottom currents which push them in preferred directions, just like smoke plumes in the atmosphere are subject to the vagaries of wind direction. In early 1990s, the Korean government has launched a deep-sea research program to secure the stable long-term supply of strategic metallic minerals including Cr, Cu and Ni. Through the pioneering surveys, Korea registered 150,000 km2 of Mn-nodule field in the Clarion-Clipperton area, the NE equatorial Pacific to the international sea-bed authority (ISA) in 1994. Following the ISA exploration code, the final exclusive exploration area of 75,000 Km2 was assigned in 2002, based on results of eight-year researches of chemicophysical properties of nodules, bottom profiles and sediment properties. Since that time, environmental studies, mining technical developments including robot miner and lifting system and establishment of smelting systems were accompanied with the detailed geophysical studies to decipher the priori mining area until 2009. Major points of the recent Korea Mn-nodule program are deployed on a commercial scale until 2015. In order to meet the goals, detailed 25,000 scaled mining maps in the priori area will be prepared, which can provide operation roots of the miner. In addition, an environmental-friendly mining strategy will be pursued based on the environmental impact test and environmental monitoring.

"INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are a kind of marine chemical sediment composed of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides as well as small amounts of clastic sediments, which are ubiquitously found on the surface of slopes of seamounts and oceanic plateaus at depths from 900 to 5500 meters below sea level (mbsl). Fe-Mn crusts contain extremely high concentrations of useful minor metals such as Co, Ni, Te, REEs, and thus are expected as submarine mineral resources. Also, Fe-Mn crusts record the change of chemical compositions of seawater during last several tens million years, which allow us to obtain clues to clarify the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of its deposition. However, occurrence, chemical compositions, microbial community and growth patterns of ferromanganese crusts are yet fully understood. Hence, a comprehensive study on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts, such as growth rates and enrichment processes of elements, is required to better understand their resource potential as well as their applications to paleoceanographic study.Based on the resource potential of ferro-manganese crust, the project entitled “Next- Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration” was launched as one of the governmental projects to develop the exploration technology based on the scientific research on the submarine resources such as hydrothermal deposits (e.g., a poster by Kawada et al.), ferro-manganese crusts. We have made several research cruise to seamounts in the north-western Pacific such as Takuyo-Daigo and Takuyo-Daisan seamounts (Fig. 1) ."

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice-like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the ocean basins. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical combination of high pressure and low temperature (0 - 17 bars, 0 - 25°C), which in turn is dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion, slumping, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level, and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flow, or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. The Indian offshore is promising for the occurrence of gas hydrates in a total of about 80,000 km2 area in the bathymetry range of 700 to 3000 m as reported in earlier surveys. A gas hydrate stability zone thickness map was prepared using bathymetry and sea bottom temperatures along the continental margins of India. This map is expected to provide the depth window while searching for Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSR). The study indicates that a minimum water depth of 750 m is required for the formation of gas hydrates, above which the chances for gas hydrate occurrence appear minimal despite other favorable conditions like organic-rich sediments, etc. Single-channel seismic analog records (Gupta et al., 1998) indicate that the Western Continental Margin of India (WCMI) offers a greater promise for gas hydrate occurrences, particularly with regard to the number of BSRs traced on the analog records as compared to earlier surveys.

INTRODUCTION Due both to the political history of UNCLOS and the sensitivity of the ocean floor and environment to man made impacts, both the Convention (including also the 1994 Amendment) and subsequent codification (such as the ISA draft code on Exploitation of Mineral Resources in the Area) put a focus on information about, and conveyance of, technology employed by interested deepsea mining companies, to inter alia the Authority and developing countries. In contrast, companies usually are (or by their nature should be) interested in safeguarding their technology and business secrets in order to secure unique selling propositions in a competitive environment. On the background of the meanwhile maturing regulatory régimes on deep sea mining, the presentation will look into some of the key regulatory provisions mirroring these apparently antagonistic interests, how the players involved could deal with them, and how they might in some cases be reconciled. Progress of Presentation The presentation will start by briefly examining some classical methods of protection of technology, such as patents, copyrights, and (not the least) secrecy. It will be found that some of the statutory means of protection due to their territorial character may face problems in being implemented in areas outside national jurisdiction, such as the Area, but that, thinking globally, they nevertheless retain much of their value for the purpose of protection. Depending on available presentation time, a model case may be used to illustrate the above – and also some of the following – findings.

Stephen D. Scott Steven Scott is a Professor of Geology, Director of the Marine Geology Research Laboratory and, until May 1997, was Chairman for 9 years of Geological and Mining Engineering, all at the University of Toronto. Steve also holds a cross appointment at the University of Western Brittany's European University Institute of the Sea in Brest, France. He was educated at the University of Western Ontario (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and at Penn State (Ph.D.). Steve is a geologist/oceanographer specializing in base and precious metal massive sulfide deposits which he and his students have studied on five continents and on the bottom of three oceans. He was the first ore deposits geologist and first Canadian to witness "black smokers" on the ocean floor. Since 1982, he has participated on 21 oceanographic surface and submersible expeditions, many of them as Chief Scientist. His research team is currently carrying out projects in the W and NE Pacific Ocean. Steve has published more than 150 research papers and lectured in more than a dozen counties. Popularized accounts of his work have appeared in various media.. He has been honored by several awards and distinguished lectureships. Steve is President of the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility, which operates the Canadian ROPOS robotic submersible, and is President of the International Marine Minerals Society.

"Since Ellefmo et al. (2014) published resource estimates of undiscovered seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR), there has been an increased focus on establishing new knowledge about exploitation technologies for such deposits. This also includes understanding the process mineralogical properties of typical SMS deposits.The part of the AMOR that lies between Jan Mayen and the Svalbard Islands and is located within Norwegian jurisdiction and, as such, investigating the potential for mineral production from hydrothermal vent fields has been seen as strategic. The AMOR has been explored for active hydrothermal vent fields since early 2000s (Pedersen et al., 2010b). One of the active vent fields discovered, Loki´s Castle, is located in the northern part of Mohn´s Ridge. This vent field was first described by Pedersen et al., (2010a) and consists of two mounds, each approximately 100-150 m diameter and 20-30 meters high, hosting several active chimneys, up to 11 m high.Loki´s Castle has been selected as a case site in order to study the properties of typical SMS occurrences with respect to possible future deep-sea mining activities. As part of the MarMine cruise in 2016, the Loki Castle was visited and sampled for e.g. mineral characterization and mineral processing analyses. In total, more than 500 kg rock samples were collected using ROVs, and intended for further research (Ludvigsen et al., 2016). In addition to sampling mineralized rock fragments, survey data like bathymetry, magnetics and Underwater Hyperspectral Imaging (UHI) was collected using Automated Underwater Vehicle (AUV)."

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. Processing of polymetallic nodules poses several challenges to metallurgists. These include the presence of at least 80 elements in nodule, presence of Ni, Cu, Co in no specific mineral form, presence of almost 30 % seawater in freshly collected nodule, and collection of slime along with the nodule. For almost 40 years, several research groups from all over the world are engaged in developing an appropriate process to extract metals from poly-metallic nodule. These processes have been tested in scales varying from few grams to several hundred kilograms (Das, 2001; Jandova, 2001). All these tests helped in defining various parameters for processing, and simultaneously brought out some of the inherent problems of processing nodules. Based on the information and the experience of all these studies, in recent years, most research groups, involved in developing metallurgical processes for nodule, are focusing their efforts in two or three alternative directions. While attempts are made to overcome some of the major challenges in processing, several new ones crop up. The difficulties are further compounded because no mining system is operating to generate some of the data required for process development. The aim of this presentation is to highlight the research efforts, and to identify areas requiring special attention of a process developer.

Up to now, much data on marine minerals, as well as on marine geochemistry, have been accumulated. Modem computer databases provide optimum flexibility and power for manipulating these data. The best worldwide marine mineral database is currently the Marine Minerals Bibliography and Geochemical Data Base created by Carla Moore et al. at the National Geophysical Data Center in the United States. In fact, in the course of studying marine minerals and geochemistry we may collect not only digital-character type data but also graph and image (black-white, grey and color image) data types. For instance, correlation diagram between chemical compositions of minerals, spectroscopic graphs, (e.g. infrared spectra, Mossbauer spectra, etc.), grey or color images from both optical and electron micro- scopes (scanning or transmission electron microscopes) as well as seabed photographs. Charles L. Morgan et al. (1993) reported that 10,000 photographs and some video images of the seabed in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific have been collected by the Ocean Minerals Company. If both graphic and analytical information were stored in a database, it would be very useful and convenient to marine geologists. This system would not only be able to search for all the data based on one parameter, but also for both size and composition distributions. If possible, geostatistical methods could be combined with fractal dimensional methods. Of course, this would require enormous efforts. Before multimedia technology emerged, it was very difficult to create image databases. The emergence of large-capacity compact discs, high-speed central processing units, and high-speed digital signal processing techniques makes it possible to establish multimedia database management systems (DBMS), image-text DBMS, that involves graphs, text, images, and sound. In order to store image fields in a DBMS, we have to take into account two problems: (1) image access format and (2) image compression code standard.

India?s interest in the resources of the deep seabed particularly the manganese nodules in the Indian Ocean can be traced back to the Indian Ocean Expedition of 1960 ? 65. The collection of Manganese Nodule samples from the Indian Ocean in January 1981 aroused considerable interest within the scientific community. Following several surveying expeditions, the Central Indian Ocean was identified as the most promising area for exploitation. India was accorded ?Pioneer Investor? status and further research and development programs were launched to establish the techno-economic viability of deep seabed mining. India has also shown considerable progress in the field of development and testing of methods for processing the nodules. The Department of Ocean Development manages the program.

Since 1983, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) have performed surveys on deep-sea mineral deposits in various areas with respects to their occurrences in Pacific ocean including manganese nodules in the C-C area of Northeast Pacific, Co-rich manganese crusts in various seamounts of West Pacific and hydrothermal sulfide deposits in back arc basins of Southwest Pacific. Among the results of these activities of KORDI, remarkable things were the registration as a pioneer investor in 1994 through the Government of Korea and the accomplishment of relinquishment on the allocated area in 2002 according to the relevant regulations. KORDI is faced to handle detailed surveys to select the optimum mining sites in the allocated area of 75,000 km2 and environmental studies to meet the requirements of the regulations or recommendations of the ISA. In respects of future exploration strategies, it is considered that methods and tools of previous exploration activities should be changed to the highly advanced technology. Establishment of an advanced exploration system and actual practice in appropriate areas become one of important tasks of KORDI in exploring deep-sea minerals, particularly manganese nodules. A technical strategy for future detailed surveys in the allocated area is realization of simultaneous and precise data acquisition on bottom information, such as variations of microtopography, nodule distribution, and transparent layer thickness of sediments in relatively small area (10 km x 10 km) representing certain specific regions, by high resolution survey technology. It would be not only a challenge for new exploration system in deep-sea environment, but also a mission for deep seabed mining venture.

In October 2004 Placer Dome entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Nautilus Minerals, to explore for Submarine Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits on Nautilus? PNG exploration tenements. Placer/Nautilus currently holds approximately 15,000 km2 of tenements in PNG waters, either granted or under application, covering all reported seafloor hydrothermal vent occurrences.

Although Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co have been the main interests since the ferromanganese nodules had been found, the other major components such as Si and Ca might be very important controlling factors in the processing due to the locally variable content. It is because of the fact that SiO2 and CaO are added to decrease the smelting temperature in the reduction-smelting method for manganese nodule processing. We have compiled the 707 chemical data for KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Survey) ferromanganese nodules, which have been acquired from 1994 to 2001 and have been also standardized from 2001 to 2003 to avoid the discrepancy between the data sets. All 707 chemical data were used for the hierarchical cluster analysis to get the elemental correlations and also classified by the morphological types. The averages from each station were classified by the facies groups (Fig. 1) and the localities. Then all data are plotted on the SiO2-CaO-MnO phase diagram at 1773°K to compare with the best compositional area in the nodule smelting. Variations and distributions of SiO2 and CaO as well as those of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni and Co in KODOS ferromanganese nodules were also reviewed. The mineral phases assigned by the cluster analysis are CFA (Carbonate Fluorapatite), Fe-oxide, Al-silicate, and Mn-oxide. MnO contents are generally higher than SiO2 contents in most of the morphological types except for the Is- and It-type. The Dt- and Tt-type show wider range and the E-types show high anomaly in their CaO contents. The stations which belong to facies group A and B show generally higher MnO contents than SiO2 contents, however, the stations of facies group C and D show wide range in their MnO and SiO2 contents.
