This paper presents the implementation of a digital twin for the vibro-replacement ground improvement process, as part of a digital construction site. The goal is to implement an evidence-based quality assurance for each produced element (column or point). The system uses a combination of planning data and real-time machine data collected automatically from construction equipment. In addition to the quality assurance, feedback is provided in a number of areas, e.g., condition monitoring of the equipment. The digital twin builds upon the real-time sensor and machine data, fused with metadata, to implement a digital model for the process. A hierarchical data evaluation, using rule-based Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), permits viewing of the spatial variation of data over the construction site. This permits the modelling of systematic variations in subsurface properties across the site, enabling the detection of anomalous individual elements, the diagnosis of their cause and the prediction of properties as construction proceeds over the site. All time-series data and KPIs are represented by standard classes of objects, leading to a generic coding of the data analysis; this minimizes the effort required to add additional sites and/or new KPIs. Examples are presented for a number of sites, where the system was used to identify anomalous columns.

Comparative tables of techniques commonly employed are given in Section 5. It can be seen that despite the presence of the 'single market', techniques still have wide diversity despite some similarities in geotechnical conditions.

The innovative Soil-Cement Mixed Wall Technique emerged in Japan and obtained recognition in the engineering and construction communities in the 1980's. This technique was introduced to the United States in 1986. It was accepted as the most credible construction technique by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for ground stabilization and cutoff wall work in the Jackson Lake Dam Project, Wyoming in 1987 and 1988. It was also accepted as a remediation technique by U.S. EPA for a Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration on in-situ solidification/ stabilization. The Soil-Cement Mixed Wall Technique consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout or other reagent slurries using multiple axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapped soil-cement columns. The overlapped column panel is then extended to form an underground continuous soil-cement wall for use as a cutoff wall or a structural diaphragm wall for groundwater control and excavation support. By arranging the column panels in various configurations, the technique becomes a versatile tool for stabilization of soft or liquefiable soils.

A 4-legged jacket structure was installed by an Offshore Installation Contractor (OIC) in the Persian Gulf. In addition to four open-end pipe piles, six conductors were installed by OIC. During the installation of the piles and conductors, some cemented layers were encountered, which had not been accounted for in the foundation design performed by an independent well known offshore geotechnical site investigation contractor (OGSIC). Six months later, the Drilling Company (DC) hired by Client to execute the wells, reported that all of the six conductors were presenting anomalies, such as vertical misalignments up to 10o and/or collapse of the conductors tip and mid height. The DC faced with serious problem in drilling of the wells and in spite of several times milling the conductors and spending 40 days unpredicted extra time, some of the routes could not be opened and Client lost millions of dollars due to direct and indirect associated costs and expenses. This paper presents a complete overview of all engineering, construction and specially geotechnical investigations and shows that how an inaccuracy in interpretations of the results of an offshore geotechnical site investigation as the main reason in this case study can cause serious damages to whole project with unbelievable time and cost impacts some times up to millions of dollars.

"The University of California’s new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive will showcase a collection of art and film in a facility that pairs an existing 1930s-era printing press facility with a new, architecturally unique auditorium wing. The centerpiece of this adaptive-reuse project is the existing 3- story art-deco Administrative Building, which will be integrated into the new museum and provide approximately 18,000 square feet of usable space. Degenkolb Engineers, as the shoring engineer of record, along with Condon Johnson & Associates Inc., the shoring contractor, worked together with general contractor Plant Construction Company to design and build a temporary structure to facilitate the complex retrofit, renovation, and expansion of the Admin Building. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by the design and construction team, the sustainable solutions implemented on the project, and the collaboration between teams to meet the unique constraints of the project and the site.INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT BACKGROUNDThe Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), which currently resides in a 1970s-era post-modern concrete structure just south of the University of California Berkeley (UCB) campus, was in need of a new home after an engineering evaluation revealed that the building possessed seismic deficiencies. Pressed for space, the University looked within its portfolio of properties and identified the site of the former University Printing Press facility as the place to build BAMPFA’s new home."

By means of further developed machines and techniques and with growing experiences in jet grouting, the challenge of this building method becomes more and more complex. To keep the concerning risks as low as possible, the requirements on the quality assurance continuously in­crease. The construction of a 37.0m deep seated slab for the Amsterdam metro station Vijzelgracht in marine clay represents such a complex task. This paper summarises the required measures of quality assurance. In particular a new hydraulic measuring device is introduced with which it was possible to detect the column diameter of 2.6m at a depth of 37.0m during the production process and with a very high accuracy.

The history of Amsterdam has been connected intimately with your professions of geo-engineering and geotechnology, since its very first days. It is good to be aware that you are part of a very old tradition. The knowledge that we need today to build and renew the city has been gathered over a century long process so that we fortunately can stand on the shoulders of the giants before us. During the centuries people living in this part of the Netherlands have always struggled against the water. The same waters that brought the opportunity for a seafaring country to discover the world and to build an empire in the 17th century were a threat to the low lying Netherlands.

Due to implementation of the rotator construction method from which a smooth shaft was anticipated, a full-scale pile load test (Osterberg Method) was performed at Pier 14 Pile 9 of the main span of the New Benicia-Martinez Bridge to confirm the design parameters of the rock sockets. Two levels of load cells were fabricated in the reinforced cage of the rock socket. Each level consisted of three 670-mm Osterberg load cells with a total testing capacity of more than 50 MN in both directions. In an attempt to separate side friction and end beari ng, a 75 mm thick compressible Styrofoam material was placed at the bottom of the cage. The pile load test was carried out in four stages. The multi-level multi stage pile load test data was interpreted for casing friction, side friction for two rock strata, end bearing, and residual side shear values under repeated loading in opposite directions. The side friction from the casing in soils at Stage 2 is approximately 9 MN. The end bearing at the tip of the rock socket at Stage 3 was calculated to be approximately 17 MN at a displacement of about 75 mm. The residual side shear resistance for the 10 m 50% RQD rock strata was calculated to be 9 MN or approximately 50% of initial values, after being pushed 0.3 mm upward in Stage 1, 71 mm downward in Stage 2, then 55.5 mm upward again in Stage 3, and finally 105.3 mm downward in Stage 4. The test results surprising ly indicate that the side shear resistances from both low RQD intensely weathered rock and higher RQD slightly weathered competent rock are about the same at approximately 19 MN. This pile load test provides very critical information for confirming deep shaft design and analyses.

As a further aid in sorting through the numerous wall alternatives for a specific design or construction project application, the paper suggests a systematic approach for wall selection, and presents helpful charts summarizing the general advantages and disadvantages, and typical limitations for the currently available wall systems.

"As part of the Schiphol-Amsterdam-Almere project, the largest aqueduct in Europe is being built in order for the A1 motorway to cross the Vecht River. The A1 consists of 12 lanes and the total width of the aqueduct will be 65 m (213 ft). The total length of the structure will be 620 m (2035 ft). Speed of construction is essential for the DBFM-contract, which forms the primary reason for choosing a building method with a horizontal water retaining barrier created by low pressure grouting. After final checks on the water tightness of the silica based layer (softgel), excavation to a depth of approximately 12 m (40 ft) below the water table could be started in order to build the aqueduct.This paper presents a new approach for the calculation of the required grout volumes needed to ensure a “softgel” layer without gaps or holes. The approach applies measurement of deviations due to execution aspects in a probabilistic model. With this model, one is able to study the effects in a field application, i.e. multiple rows of grouted spheres. The results are visualized in order to analyze the risk of holes more easily. It is evident that the existence of a hole means a major leakage. By completing multiple runs, the strategy for grout volumes can be adjusted to minimize this risk.INTRODUCTIONThe Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works invests over € 4 billion between 2012-2020 to increase the capacity of 63 km (41 mi) motorways of one of Holland’s major corridors. The A1/A6 will be transformed over a distance of 20 kilometers (13 mi). Near Muiden, the current drawbridge on the A1 for crossing the Vecht river will be replaced by a new aqueduct to be located slightly south of the existing bridge."

"This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. To increase bearing capacity of the soft soil as well as a countermeasure of liquefaction, grid-form deep cement mixing walls (DMWs) were employed with the piled raft. Based on the long-term monitoring results, the ratio of the load carried by the DMWs to the effective structure load after the construction of the raft was estimated to be 0.3 while that carried by the piles was 0.7. In order to clarify the contribution of the DMWs to bearing the structure load, numerical simulation of the settlement and the load sharing among the piles, the DMWs and the unstabilized soil was performed using a three-dimensional finite element model. The results of the numerical simulation agreed well with the measured values, when the Young’s modulus of the DMWs obtained from the unconfined compressive tests was adopted and the shear modulus of the soft soil was reduced to 50% of that at small strains.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, piled raft foundations have been used in many countries as building foundations. The effectiveness of piled rafts in reducing average and differential settlements has been confirmed not only on favorable ground conditions as shown by Katzenbach et al. (2000), Poulos (2001) and Mandolini et al. (2005), but also on unfavorable ground conditions such as soft clay and/or liquefiable sand using ground improvement technique (Yamashita et al., 2011a; Yamashita et al., 2011b; Yamashita et al. 2013). Grid type ground improvement using the Deep Mixing Method has been applied to sandy ground as a countermeasure of liquefaction to increase liquefaction resistance of unstabilized soil left in the grid walls where its shear deformation during seismic motion is reduced by the confinement effect of the grid walls (Kitazume, 2013). The high applicability of the method was demonstrated in the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake (Tokimatsu et al., 1996; Uchida et al., 2012a; Uchida et al., 2012b).This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. A 13.6 mile portion of the 500 kV Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project crosses the mountains of the Angeles National Forest. Access and environmental constraints precluded road development for most transmission tower foundations, tower erection and conductor stringing operations. Because of the access constraints, helicopter-supported micropile foundation construction was used for this steep and environmentally sensitive portion of the project. The general methodologies incorporated on the project represent innovative implementations of micropile design criteria, preconstruction micropile installation and verification testing, on-site geotechnical characterization, micropile and pile cap installation, and proof load testing. Challenges in constructing the 224 foundations for 56 transmission towers provide lessons learned related to transmission lattice steel tower specific design constraints, construction challenges (environmental and geotechnical), and construction schedule.

"With a height of 200 m, a crown width of 626 m and a concrete volume of 1.6 million m³, the Kölnbrein Dam in the upper Malta valley in Carinthia / Austria is the largest concrete dam in Austria. Boasting a storage capacity of 200 million m³ with a received water load of 54 MN, this is one of the strongest arch dams in the world.During its construction from 1974 to 1977, the dam was equipped with a comprehensive monitoring system capable of comparing developing deformations and stresses with the design values.With a planned reservoir level of 1,900 m a.s.l. the dam saw the reservoir level of 1,860 m a.s.l. breached in the year 1978. This led to extremely high seepage losses of up to 200 ltr/sec and a rise in the foundation water pressure up to 100% of the dam’s height. These observations were caused by the development of horizontal cracks in the area of the middle dam blocks, between the lowest inspection walkway and the waterside.As a consequence, power plant operations had to significantly be reduced and a number of additional measures were carried out – though these did not lead to the desired sealings.The developer subsequently decided that the dam should undergo a general rehabilitation from 1998 to 1994 in accordance with a concept developed by Professor Lombardi. This concept involved erecting a 50 m high support structure with a concrete volume of 500,000 m³ on the airside of the dam, along with the addition of neoprene bearings to transfer 1.2 million tons of the horizontal load. These measures were able to reduce the deformations in the dam enough so that mostly load-bearing injections into the cracks in the dam’s concrete could successfully be carried out by way of targeted grouting measures using injection resin (RODUR) specifically developed for this purpose.In the years 1998 - 1994, a total of 130,000 m of grouting, monitoring and control drillings were executed, and around 200,000 kg of synthetic resin was injected into the cracks in the dam’s concrete.These measures have ensured the dam‘s uninterrupted operation since 1994. A number of small re- injections were again carried out on the contact surface in the years 2011 and 2012."

Improvements in construction equipment and techniques in recent years have made possible the use of drilled shaft foundations in diameters and lengths not previously considered practical or feasible. Many highway bridge and other structures are now routinely founded on drilled shafts which -are 8 to 12 feet in diameter and extending over 200 feet in depth below grade. There are unique challenges associated with constructing such large and deep cast-In-place foundations and engineers should be aware of the special needs associated with site investigation, construction specifications, material requirements, and quality assurance. This paper outlines a number of special considerations for these foundations, along with strategies that may be employed to improve the reliability and quality of large drilled shaft foundations.

"This paper presents the challenges associated with the design and construction of a steel sheet pile cofferdam supported with one level of grouted anchors in clean to silty sand with gravel. The initial assessment of the subsurface conditions indicated loose to medium dense soil with intermittent dense to very dense layers with no occurrence of cobbles and boulders. Sheet piles were proposed to be installed to a depth of 24 m below the ground surface to limit dewatering requirements for the cofferdam. During sheet pile installation, refusal of piles occurred at multiple locations forming passages for increased flow into the cofferdam. Modifications were made in the design of the dewatering system as a result of the increased flow. Finite element modeling was used to select the necessary modifications to the dewatering system within the cofferdam. Wells were installed based on the findings of the numerical model. Model simulations showed good comparison with monitoring of the field installed dewatering system.INTRODUCTIONIt is necessary to consider the impact of the ground water, subsurface stratigraphy, strength, and drainage behavior of the soil for the design and construction of cofferdams. This paper presents a case history of the construction of a cofferdam in Northern Ontario, Canada. The project consists of the construction of a powerhouse, intake, and tailrace which will generate around 28 MW of renewable clean energy by diverting water from New Post Creek through a power house and discharge into the Abitibi River. The focus of this paper is the dewatering and excavation support required to permit construction of the powerhouse. The layout of the cofferdam is shown in Fig. 1. The cofferdam for the powerhouse is rectangular in shape with sheet piles on all four sides intended to be driven to the design toe El. 101 m. The east and west walls have a length of 46.3 m. North and south sides are 47.6 m long; and in addition, two cantilever sheet pile walls bound the tailrace on the west side and two cantilever walls were installed on the east for construction of the penstock inlet. The ground surface in the powerhouse cofferdam area, before commencement of sheet pile driving, was brought to El. 125; the ground then slopes up to the East, toward New Post Creek, and the site is bounded on the West by the Abitibi River. 186 pairs of sheet piles were used to create the cofferdam and cantilever walls. The deepest excavation is to elevation 114.4 m. Within the west half of the cofferdam footprint, the base of excavation slopes upward at 3H: 1V to facilitate the tailrace discharge into Abitibi River.SOIL STRATIGRAPHYThe cofferdam design was based on the geotechnical investigation conducted by AECOM (2014) which included two relevant boreholes near the powerhouse footprint. The ground elevation at the time of investigation varied between 131 to 129 m. The material observed to the full depth of investigation was comprised generally of coarse to fine sand and gravelly sand or a sand matrix with gravelly inclusions. Some intermittent layers of clay and silt intrusions were also observed. Generally the soils grade finer away from the river. SPT N60 values were recorded in two borings during the field investigation with values reported from 3 to 92. The in-situ conditions ranged from compact to dense with some loose and some very dense zones. Figure 2 shows the variation in SPT N60 values with elevation."

"For a multi-story building project in Kolkata, a pile load testing program was conducted to minimize pile performance uncertainty resulting from variable subsurface conditions and to verify the pile load vs. settlement response. The program consisted of performing five (5) instrumented load tests on augured cast-in-place (ACIP) pre-production test piles. Vibrating-wire strain gages and extensometers were installed in the test piles at strategic locations to enable measurements of the load vs. deformation behavior of the test piles. This paper presents a description of site subsurface conditions, test pile installation, instrumentation setup for a maintained load test (MLT), static compression pile load test results, and pile instrumentation result interpretation. Average mobilized unit shaft resistance values are calculated.2.0 INTRODUCTIONThe project site is located in Kolkata, near river Ganges, and the proposed development plans consist of constructing six (6)25-story (G+25) towers; see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 below for approximate site location and proposed development layout, respectively. The buildings were designed to be supported on ACIP piles. A field load test program was implemented to verify sub-surface conditions and pile design. The test program consisted of installing Five (5) instrumented test piles numbered LP1A and B through LP6A and B, and performing static compression load tests on these piles. The piles were instrumented with vibrating-wire strain gauges and extensometers, so that the pile shaft resistance distribution along pile length and the pile toe resistance could be interpreted using direct instrumentation measurements."

Dynamic Load Test (DLT) on driven piles has been performed routinely all over the world. In several recent projects, even 100% testing has become a norm where every single pile is dynamically load tested. In these cases, most piles are of uniform sections, making the field analysis (CASE method) straight forward. The CASE method, which has been used for the last 50 years, however, is only applicable to uniform piles to monitor pile driving stresses as well as pile capacities. Signal matching analysis can handle different configurations. However, the analysis used to require user inputs (i.e., non-automatic). Manual signal matching analysis, which can solve non-uniform solutions, traditionally takes hour(s) to complete for one blow. As such, the real-time pile driving stresses and resistances had traditionally been relying upon the CASE method, using typical range of CASE damping (JC). Until 2021, due to the lack of a rigorous instant signal matching analysis for non-uniform piles, no tool was available to help engineers evaluate non-uniform piles in real-time. An inexperienced field engineer may overlook this shortcoming when evaluating peak driving stresses. Furthermore, ultimate bearing resistances for non-uniform piles may require further evaluation to account for the non-uniformity of piles if relying on the CASE method. This paper highlights recent advances in instant Signal Matching Analysis on non-uniform piles, allowing field engineers to monitor stresses and resistances of non-uniform piles during driving.

"Several laboratory modeling programs have been conducted to investigate the mechanisms associated with internal erosion of dam embankments and foundations. The investigation consists of developing laboratory devices to model three separate mechanisms associated with process: 1) contact erosion along bedrock joints, and 2) piping into an open bedrock defect. The contact erosion device subjects the soil above a bedrock joint to high velocity flows in the joint. The erosion into a bedrock defect device examines a number of static and transient hydraulic conditions to study the mechanisms associated with this type of erosion. Numerous tests have been conducted using both devices. The results of the modeling will be discussed along with a discussion of how this information could be used in future dam design and risk assessment studies.IntroductionA series of laboratory modeling programs were performed to assess the seepage and internal erosion behavior of several man-made and natural structures within dams and their foundations. Each model was performed on a “bench scale” and depicted an isolated location where internal erosion was likely to occur. The models were subjected to hydraulic boundary conditions to simulate the in-situ conditions so that the processes of internal erosion could be observed. Two laboratory devices were developed to model conditions depicting 1) contact erosion along a bedrock joint in contact with a dam embankment, and 2) backward erosion (piping) into an open bedrock defect (joint, solution void, etc.).Embankment dams often have rock foundations containing defects which may detrimentally impact future performance. Further, there are existing foundations which contain rock defects that may already be detrimentally impacting the dams; however, due to the inherent aspects of the mechanism, the signs of distress may not have propagated to the surface and thus not observed during inspections. A better understanding of the mechanisms which are influenced by, and impose their influence upon, rock defects will enhance the ability of dam safety professionals to analyze the risks associated with internal erosion due to rock defects, increase our ability to monitor and successfully initiate earlier detection, and also increase our ability to design remediation methods to contend with rock defect failure modes."

This report presents the results of a synthesis on the design and analysis of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. The synthesis included an industry survey concerning the practice of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. Participation in the survey was solicited by advertisements in several trade magazines and by e-mail for the DFI membership. The survey participants numbered 150. Their professional roles include consulting engineers, specialty contractors, design engineers, government engineers, and academicians. They represent a variety of geographical areas including North/Central/South America, United Kingdom, Middle East, Caribbean, Hawaii, Japan, India, Egypt, France, Australia and New Zealand. Upon completion of the survey, several professionals in the field of liquefaction and ground improvement were interviewed for them to elaborate on the survey results. The interviews are included in the Appendix of this report. Financial support for the project was provided by DFI and Dan Brown and Associates PC. The concept of the liquefaction mitigation synthesis was developed by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee in recognition that: (a) The results of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance have challenged previously longheld beliefs about liquefaction and associated mitigation techniques, and; (b) The DFI membership and the engineering/construction industry are interested to know if and how engineers and designers are subsequently adjusting their practice in consideration of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance. For more detailed information on recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance, presentations are available from the State-of-the-Art Forum: Liquefaction Consequences and Mitigation that was held in St. Louis in 2012. A commentary of the state-of-practice in ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation (prepared by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee) is included in this issue of the DFI Journal. The author would like to thank the participants of the survey and especially Mr. Mike Jeffries, Dr. Les Youd, and Dr. Ikuo Towhata for their willingness to share their expertise in interviews. A redevelopment in the City of London has been constructed with a piled foundation system that is believed to be the first of its kind. The purpose of the research is to explore this novel foundation method, which involves the installation of closely spaced piles in a perimeter arrangement with a body of soil enclosed in the centre. Both centrifuge modelling and numerical modelling techniques are used.
