Resistance spot welding is the most common type of welding in the automotive industry. In RSW the size and shape of welding nugget is one of the most effective factors on mechanical properties, such as tensile shear strength and fatigue strength. so properly adjusting the variables of the welding is necessary .in this study the effect of different parameters of RSW including time, current, electrode force, geometry of electrode so diameter and angle of electrode tip in the shape and size of welding nugget evaluated. for experimental procedure, low carbon steel sheet st12 is used. the process is simulated with finite element method by using ANSYS software. for the formation of welding nugget a 2 dimensional symmetrical model electrical-thermalmechanical is used and for elevate the accuracy ,we determined the properties of material related to temperature. The results show that increasing the time and current of welding, the diameter of spot weld also increased and the role of current is more impressive. and also increasing the electrode force decrease the diameter of the nugget due to increasing the contact area and decreasing the resistance .increasing the diameter of electrode tip cause increasing contact area and decreasing the resistance and decreasing the diameter of the nugget. furthermore, changing tip angle and electrode diameter don't show sensible change in the geometry of the welding nugget. comparison between simulation and experimental result show a good adaption.

Analysis of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) usually involves high-end analytical tools including scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analytical transmission electron microscope (TEM). In recent years, focused ion beam microscope (FIB) has found many applications in materials science fields. In this study, high-resolution FIB images have shown details of crack morphology and a plan-view TEM specimen containing the selected crack-tip was successfully prepared. The preparation of cross-sectioned samples containing crack tips was of paramount importance for subsequent TEM analyses.

"Over the past 15 years, technical innovations have improved the properties and performance of monolithic refractories. As these improvements have occurred, aluminum cast-house refractory selections have changed from brick to monolithic refractories supplied as either cast in place, or precast, ""Big-Block"" installations. A review of the properties of monolithic and brick refractories is presented, as well as the technical advantages of brick for highly demanding applications. Operating conditions and issues such as temperature, alloying, corundum growth and other variables are also reviewed."

Failure to meet quality objectives during the execution of any industrial project has lasting negative impacts on facility life cycle performance. Cost overruns, schedule delays, and rework are characteristics of project quality issues that arise during the project. Commissioning and start-up problems, low production, production bottlenecks, breakdowns and the necessity for operational work-arounds are characteristics of project quality issues that appear after project completion. Risks such as production facility downtime, shortened equipment life, and potential HSE violations must be clearly identified and addressed during project planning phases. Appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) focus must be placed on identified high-risk areas. In order to be effective, quality systems must be flexible, non-confrontational, consistent, and adaptable to projects of any size ? from capital mega-projects to small maintenance projects. All project participants must be aligned in how they are approaching quality and the difference between QA and QC must be clear to everyone on the project. Emphasis must be placed on QA activities to minimize project cost, reduce rework, manage change, and reduce the production facility operational risk. QA is focused on the work processes used to generate the design and confirming that the processes are present and being followed. Issues in the work processes guarantee that the output drawings and specifications will be less than optimal. The identification and monitoring of quality-critical processes provides a focus for QA activities. QC activities are then used to generate proof that the project was implemented correctly and become a key part of the turnover.

Advanced high temperature electrochemical systems such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and ionic transport membranes are currently being developed for a wide variety of energy conversion, storage and gas cleanup applications. These systems offer high electrical efficiency, multi fuel capability, modular construction, no/negligible emissions (SOx, NOx, VOC, particulate matters) with capability to sequester green house gas emissions (GHG). Pt-Bi intermetallic Nanoparticles was prepared by the polymer-anchor method. The electron micrographs shows that the dimensions of particles sharply distribute in the range of about 3-6 nm. The elemental ratio of Pt/Bi in the bimetallic particles is estimated by the electron probe microanalysis method. Pt-Bi intermetallic Nanoparticles shows a higher activity for the ORR than pure Pt. No significant dependence of the oxidation currents on the rotating speed of the electrode could be observed in the presence of methanol. This clearly indicates that the Pt-Bi is inactive to methanol.

Abstract- The three traditional types of Variscan vein Pb-Zn-(Ag) mineralization recognized in the Bohemian massif from historic paragenetic studies are confirmed by modern metallogenic studies. Stable C, S, and 0 isotope data, as well as Pb and Sr isotopic ratios of the deposits, indicate a predominantly crustal origin of the constituents in all three types. Although the data also suggest differences in temperature and pressure of formation, and the oxidation conditions and nature of the hydrothermal fluids, nonetheless they are consistent with prevailing metallogenic classifications of the vein mineralization.

Thermal shock resistant properties of reaction sintered bauxite-based ß -Sialon bonded corundum have been investigated, and the results are compared with those of Al2O3 based counterpart. It is found they all have very good thermal shock resistance. Their residual strength ratios after one thermal shock cycle at ? T=1200°C and A T=1350°C are 61-73% and 53-65% respectively. TSR parameters are calculated based on thermal expansion, modulus of elasticity, and fracture toughness determined. The reasons for improved TSR of these composite materials are discussed.

Refractory lining performance of aluminium melting and holding furnaces and downtime due to refractory re-linings, are important parameters for increasing the aluminium output of a cast house and decreasing costs. The importance of refractory materials testing is illustrated by examples of improvements made in refractory lining concepts, quality control and introduction of alternative and newly developed materials. These examples also show that the information given by product definitions of refractory suppliers will in many cases be insufficient to judge the risks and benefits of using alternative materials.

Slagging gasifiers are used to produce chemicals and/or electricity from feedstocks such as coal and/or petroleum coke. A gasifier environment includes pressures from 400 to 1000 psi, temperatures from 1250-1550°C, are cyclic, reducing gases of CO and 112, and molten ash that interacts with the refractory liner materials. The high Cr2O3 refractory liners of gasifiers fail within 3 to 24 months. Gasifier users seek materials with increased reliability and service life. This paper discusses causes of refractory failure and efforts to increase refractory service life.

Uranyl mineral dissolution appears to be complex, affected by factors such as solution pH and the presence of various cations in solution, and sometimes involving formation of secondary surface precipitates. Such secondary precipitates potentially could armor the underlying uranyl mineral surfaces from further dissolution. A detailed understanding on the formation of secondary precipitate is therefore essential for predictive modeling of radionuclide fate and transport in the subsurface. Several types of secondary precipitates on the surface of uranyl minerals were examined using Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and, Xray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

In spite of tremendous efforts in research and development of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), essential properties of the actual catalyst material, supported Pt or Pt-alloy nanoparticles, are not yet well understood. Fundamental understanding of the catalyst structure and the prevailing kinetic mechanisms is, however, of utmost importance for further progress. In the present study, we investigate catalyst activity for CO oxidation from a theoretical point of view. Electrochemical CO oxidation serves as an important test reaction for the study of the fundamental properties of supported Pt nanoparticles. Recent experiments have revealed strong effects of catalyst particle size and supporting material on catalytic activity. It was found, that the activity towards CO oxidation decreases significantly when the particle diameter drops below 2.5 nm. We perform kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of CO oxidation on supported catalyst particles to elucidate this particle-size effect. The simulations are based on the active site concept, highlighting the role of active site formation and finite surface mobility of adsorbed electroactive species for catalyst activity. For comparison with experimental results, potential step experiments were simulated. The Monte Carlo simulations consistently reproduce effects of particle size and electrode potential found experimentally. In comparison with our simulations, analytical mean field models and nucleation and growth models exhibit inferior agreement with experimental data. In summary, our findings support an oxidation mechanism via active site formation. The reason for the slow reaction kinetics on catalyst particles with diameters below 2.5 nm is a rather low CO surface diffusivity. The rates of active site formation, diffusion and CO oxidation via recombination with adsorbed OH can be determined from the simulations.

"The one point left off the table was pumping costs, i.e. the cost of pumping to the cyclones.At East Malartic 5 x 5 S R L pumps that had been used to pump the classifier overflow were used to pump the rod and ball mill discharges to the cyclones. Maintenance costs on the pumps rose from $105 in 6 months to $1000 per month. The pumps had to be operated at 1150 rpm and impellers lasted only 5 to 6 days. These pumps were replaced by 6 x 6 S R. L. pumps operating at 825 rpm, but at this speed the coarser sands settled and plugged the pipe lines and the speed was increased to 925 rpm. The maintenance cost is now $100 per m::rnth which is 0 003 cents per ton milled. The impellers now last 1 month and the casing linings 6 months.Density meters are often used on cyclone overflows and sometimes on the cyclone feed. Haliburton weighted tube density meters are used in some plants. They are cheaper than the radioactive density controller, $2500 as compared to $ 6000The angle of the discharge spray from the apex can be used to judge the quality of perform1nce of a cyclone.For ordinary metallurgical applications the inside slope of the cyclone is not too important but for fine separation steeper slopes are used.The cyclone is a versatile tool and will handle considerable variations in feed tonnage - probably up to 15%. Above this variation the number of cyclones used has to be increased or decreased or the tonnage fed to them has to be adjusted"

Ranger uranium mine is surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park and offsite impacts resulting from mining at Ranger would affect the Magela Creek catchment first. Radionuclides, lead isotope ratios and metal concentrations were measured in sediment cores from the Magela Creek catchment around Ranger to investigate the dispersion of mine-derived particulates. The study found a localised area within the Ranger mineral lease, where upper sediments had elevated levels of radionuclides and trace metals and radiogenic Pb isotope ratios. There is no current evidence of sediment dispersion from Ranger further downstream within the Magela Creek catchment.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) is an independent, international organization that advances for the public benefit the science of radiological protection, in particular by providing recommendations and guidance on all aspects of protection against ionizing radiation. This presentation touches on aspects of The 2007 Recommendations of the ICRP, a fundamental document that lays out the system of radiological protection for all exposure situations and types, and focuses on other recent publications relevant to the uranium industry. Of particular relevance are the 2009 ICRP Statement on Radon and the accompanying report on lung cancer risk from radon.

"The South African Mineral Resource Committee (SAMREC), a Working Group of the SAMREC/SAMVAL Committee (SSC), under the joint auspices of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) developed the SAMREC Code. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. It is applicable to the reporting of all styles of solid mineralization or economic deposit. However, certain commodities, namely coal and diamonds, have specific additional reporting requirements. The Code does not apply to oil, gas or water."

Twelve years ago, Kennecott Utah Copper modernized its Refinery in conjunction with the modernization of the Kennecott Smelter with the latest flash smelting and flash converting technologies. The Refinery modernization consisted of installation of new polymer concrete cells, installation of KIDD TPS (total production stripping) system, installation of automated materials handling system, and the construction of a new hydrometallurgical slimes treatment process and precious metals plant. This paper outlines the Refinery operations and process improvements. Also presented are the newly implemented technologies and operating results of one of the world' s largest and most modern electrolytic copper refineries.
