"The purpose of this paper is to determine the best techno-economic alternative for the treatment of tin ores, when comparing the various mining and metallurgical methods of preconcentration, concentration, volatilization (fuming) and up to the final stage of selling to the smelter. The study of the influence of the different parameters of cost, recovery and quoted prices has motivated the paper, which aims at determining the best process of ore treatment in terms of its techno-economic feasibility.Method of WorkOn the basis of head grades of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0% tin, the following alternative methods of treatment are possible:1. Mining-Concentration-Smelting.2. Mining-Preconcentration-Fuming-Smelting.3. Mining-Concentration-Separation, with direct smelting and fuming/smelting of the two fractions produced.The calculations were carried out on the basis of existing information and publications concerning the various experimental recoveries in the operating mills of COMIBOL. In the case of concentrates containing less than 10% or more than 40% tin, extrapolation was required.The final grade of the tin concentrates and the gross weight of the concentrate were calculated on the basis of the estimated recovery curves. The costs of the preconcentration and the concentration stage s were determined per gross metric ton of material treated.The calculation of the cost of the smelting stage is similar for all the alternatives, the royalties and smelting charge varying with the grade of the final concentrate. In the fuming stage, a uniform recovery of 90% was taken in all cases so as to obtain a final concentrate grade of 65% tin, regardless of the head grade of the feed material.For the separation stage, the following considerations apply:a) Separation can be carried out by gravity separation or flotation methods.b) The cost of separation varies depending on the system used.c) The distribution of tin in the two fractions is 100% at this stage. In other words, there is no loss of tin during separation."

"The Boliden Lead Kaldo Plant for the treatment of lead bearing flue-dust from the Copper Smelter and the Slag Fuming Plant has been in operation at the Ronnskar Works of Boliden Metall since the middle of 1976. At the present stage, the plant can treat lead-bearing dust of different kinds and compositions. The process allows good separation of arsenic and halogens from lead.The flue dust from the Copper Smelter and the Slag Fuming Plant is very complex and, apart from lead, also contains zinc, copper, tin, bismuth, cadmium, antimony, arsenic, sulphur, silver, chlorine and fluorine. The metallurgical process has been developed by Boliden Metall and has been tested on a pilot scale at the Foundation for Metallurgical Research (MEFOS) in Lulea, Sweden.The pelletized dust is smelted in the converter, where the heat is generated by an oil oxygen burner. The second step consists of reduction with coke. A lead bullion and slag are obtained. The slag, transported in liquid form, is treated in the Slag Fuming Plant for the recovery of zinc. The third step is the elimination of arsenic from the bullion. This is achieved by treating the lead with iron (turnings or pellets). The result is a crude lead and speiss. The lead contains silver, tin, antimony and bismuth, and is suitable for the final refining stages in normal plant equipment for refined lead.For process control, we use the rapid analysis centre, which is pneumatically and electronically linked to 'all major plant sections and allows for a quick turn-around between delivery of the sample and feedback of results. All three steps in the process are performed in the same converter.Since the starting up of the plant, the original process has been subjected to some modifications. Initial problems related to equipment, maintenance and environment have been solved step by step. Examples are quoted. Recent operating particulars are presented."

This study was aimed at separating and recovering arsenic, antimony, and tin from refining byproducts generated in a nonferrous smelter. The target byproduct was a silicate slag containing the above elements. The silicate structure of the slag was destroyed by alkali roasting, which then enabled leaching of arsenic, antimony and tin in solution effectively. Arsenic was selectively leached out by hot water after alkali roasting of the slag, while remained antimony and tin in the residue were leached out by a hot hydrochloric acid solution. However, when the solid-liquid ratio in the leaching solution was increased, hydrous gelatinous silica (gel-like silica) was formed during the hydrochloric acid treatment and filtration became difficult. Therefore, high temperature and high pressure leaching was attempted to improve the filterability of the silica leaching residue. In the high temperature and high pressure treatment, the hydrous gel-like silica was transformed into easily filterable aggregated silica, and thus, filtration became easy. By investigating the neutralization and sulfurization treatment for the obtained hydrochloric acid leachate (second leachate), it was possible to separate antimony and tin. INTRODUCTION This study aims to separate arsenic and recover valuable metals such as antimony and tin from refining byproducts generated in a nonferrous smelter. The target smelting byproduct is antimony-containing slag in this study. In many cases, alkali roasting was adopted as pretreatment for extraction and recovering valuable metals from smelting residues and wastes (Rao, 2006). For antimony-containing slag in this study, one effective method for separating arsenic is to convert arsenic to sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4) by roasting with a sodium compound and then to remove arsenic by hot water leaching. In addition, by alkali roasting, the silicate structure of the slag is destroyed, and effectively alkalizing tin and antimony is accomplished. Then, precipitating and recovering tin and antimony leached into the acid solution are considered possible by sulfurization and neutralization treatments. In this research, we conducted basic studies on the following. 1) Destruction of silicate structure in slag by alkali roasting and leachability of arsenic. 2) Conversion of hydrous gelatinous silica to aggregated silica by hydrochloric acid treatment of residues after arsenic leaching under high temperature and high pressure, as well as leachability of antimony and tin. 3) Separation and recovery of antimony and tin by sulfurization and neutralization treatments of hydrochloric acid leachate. These topics of investigation can support to consider the separation and recovery process of arsenic, antimony, and tin from antimony containing slag.

"Extensive screening revealed a seaweed (alga) biomass type which in its non-living state possesses a very high cobalt sequestering capacity comparable to that of activated carbon and the ion-exchange resin currently used in the cobalt production process. Performance of the new bio-sorbent material was studied by examining its equilibrium metal uptake isotherms generated under different solution conditions such as initial cobalt concentration pH, temperature, and the presence of selected cations and anions. The rate of cobalt uptake was determined, which is a crucial parameter for recovery process design. Almost all cobalt sorbed can also be desorbed with a solution of CaCI2. The bio-sorbent material can be used repeatedly in the sorption-desorption cobalt concentration process. IntroductionIt has been well documented that certain types of microbial biomass, living or non-living, possess a high potential to sequester and accumulate inorganic ions present in aqueous solutions. Metal concentration by microbial biomass from a solution is termed bio-sorption. This phenomenon is quite complex and includes adsorption of metals onto the surface of a microorganism and/or into the cellular structure in combination with ion-exchange, complexation, and/or micro-precipitation. Bio-sorption is generally considered to be a rapid physical/chemical process. The cell wall structure is porous and allows metal ions, as well as large organic nutrient molecules, to pass freely through. Polysaccharides of the cell wall could provide binding amino, carboxyl, phosphate and sulphate groups. In addition to these functional binding groups, polysaccharides often have ion-exchange properties. Sometimes, bivalent cations, such as Ca2+ or Mg2+, help the formation of ionic bond bridges between the negatively charged cell surfaces and positively charged cations in the solution, Proteins in the cell wall could offer functional groups and also offer peptide bonds to bind ions. Interactions between metal and the cell wall components are responsible for the sequestering of metals by way of bio-sorption. Many metals feature a complex solution chemistry and it is not always possible to determine what ionic species are actually present in the solution. The equilibria involved are dependent on pH, concentration, the anions present and other factors. The transport system for the ions are sometimes dependent on both temperature and energy. Biosorbent material could also be regenerated for multiple reuse."

"The Pierre Beauchemin Mine attained commercial production in January 1989, and went on to produce 23 968 ounces of gold for the year, 3% higher than forecast. Underground development was accelerated to prepare the way for the production of an estimated 40 000 ounces in 1989.IntroductionThe Pierre Beauchemin Mine is located nine miles west of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Fig. I).As a result of the amalgamation with Sullivan Mines in October 1987, the mine is now entirely owned by Cambior Inc.The Eldrich deposit was discovered in 1953and began production in 1955, closing in 1962 following the decrease in gold prices and the simultaneous decrease in silica content in the ore, which was sold to the Noranda smelter for flux. A total of 717 000 tons grading 0.14 oz Au/t were produced during this period.From July 1984 to October 1987, an underground exploration program was carried out by Sullivan on the Eldrich mining concession and the nearby Flavel property. The first phase of the program included reinstallation of surface facilities and dewatering of the Eldrich Mine. Following the completion of the first phase, extensive exploration was carried out, including a major program of diamond drilling. It was then decided to deepen the shaft to a depth of 1800 ft to access a new zone called the No.5 Zone .Following the amalgamation with Sullivan in October 1987, Cambior assumed the role of operator for the project, and continued the shaft deepening work that had already been started. A feasibility study was completed in April 1988 and the Cambior board of directors approved a production decision for the Eldrich-Flavel project.The preproduction program extended from May to December 1988 and was aimed at preparing the stopes in the upper part of the mine and at developing the mine infrastructure at the bottom of the mine.The mine was officially opened in August 1988. Cambior renamed the project the Pierre Beauchemin Mine in recognition of Pierre Beauchemin's pioneer-work."

"Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action.Through tighter control, ""insurance"" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.IntroductionA straight grate indurator, or pelletizing machine, consists of a continuo us moving train of pallets on which a feed stream of unfired, ""green"" pellets is deposited on a hearth layer o f fired pellets. This bed moves through several zones in the furnace where it is dried, preheated, fired and cooled by streams of gases which are pulled or blown through the bed by a series o f large process fan s. Control systems for straight grate plants are designed to maintain gas flow through the machine to ensure that sufficient time and heat are available to raise the temperature of the entire green bed to 1300°C where hematite bonding take s place.For the pas t two year s a new approach to control systems using microprocessor-based instrumentation has been designed and tested in an existing plant with a straight grate indurating furnace processing magnetite ore. The purpose of the test was to determine the most efficient operating setpoints for all levels of production above fifty per cent of design capacity. Through a combination of feed forward control, variable setpoints and additional loops, significant savings have been realized. Thus far the project has taught us much about control systems design and operation, energy utilization, and the process itself."

"A morphological and chemical study of the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS) fly ash has been carried out. Extensive scanning electron microscopy, as well as light microscopy, showed that the GCOS fly ash consists of two fractions, one composed of unburnt or partially burnt irregular-shaped carbon particles and an ash fraction composed of transparent and opaque, often coloured, glassy spherical particles-some of them cenospheres (hollow spheres) and the others plerospheres (hollow spheres packed with smaller spheres). Microcrystals (0.1 to 0.3 um long) growing on the inner and outer surfaces of some of the spheres were also noted and found to contain more Fe, Ti, Ni and V than the spheres.The carbon-free GCOS fly ash particle size follows a lognormal distribution, with a geometric median particle size (by count) of3.8um and a geometric standard deviation of 1.84. IntroductionCanada's current energy situation strongly suggests that oil from the Alberta tar sands deposits will probably be recovered more extensively in the future. Today's commercially proven technology to recover oil from the Athabasca tar sands, as practised by Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS), involves two major operations, namely: separation of the bitumen from the sand and upgrading of the bitumen to refinery oil; the production of significant amounts of petroleum coke and sulphur during the bitumen upgrading process. The bulk of the petroleum coke is burnt in boilers to fulfill the energy requirements of the entire operation. The boiler ash, which contains appreciable amounts of metals, such as vanadium, nickel, titanium, iron, aluminum and other elements, is collected in the boiler hoppers and cyclones of the petroleum coke-fired steam generation plants. Thus, as well as representing a petroleum resource, the tar sands represent a resource for vanadium and possibly other metals providing that metal recovery processes can be developed."

"Abstract - Twenty-seven marine Mn and Fe deposits chosen for their diverse origins have been analyzed for five platinum-group elements (PGE). The PGE display their highest concentrations in hydrogenous Mn crusts and nodules, lesser concentrations in diagenetic nodules and two to three orders of magnitude lower concentrations in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. This difference of behavior reflects the well-known fractionation of Mn and Fe from the other transition elements, rare earth elements (REE) and PGE in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir show a close geochemical coherence in these deposits and are differentiated from Pd which shows a negative anomaly with respect to the other PGE in hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits. Pd is less depleted than the other PGE and the Pd anomaly much less pronounced in the hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts relative to the hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits.Stability field diagrams show no evidence for the oxidation of Pt to the tetravalent state in seawater as suggested by some authors. Rather, Pt appears to be present in seawater as Pt(OH)2 0. Adsorption of Pt(OH)2 0 onto the surface of Mn and Fe oxyhydroxide minerals may explain the enrichment of Pt in marine Mn deposits. However, Pt metal is the thermodynamically stable solid phase of Pt under seawater conditions and reduction of Pt(OH)2 0 to Pt metal, particularly in the vicinity of the oxygen minimum zone, is possible, although the high Ce/La ratios of the Co-rich Mn crusts do not support this hypothesis. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir display their maximum concentrations in the Corich Mn crusts. This may reflect, among other things, the low growth rates of these deposits. The stability field diagram of Pd shows that Pd is undersaturated in seawater and occurs in seawater dominantly as PdCl4 2- and anionic mixed-hydroxide-chloride complexes. This would explain the anomalous position of Pd among the PGE with respect to its uptake into marine Mn deposits. A study of inter-element associations indicates that the incorporation of the PGE from meteoritic dust plays only a minor role in the uptake of these elements into marine Mn deposits. The PGE remain the most poorly studied group of elements in marine Mn deposits. The data presented here emphasize the need for the establishment of a more comprehensive database of the PGE in marine Mn deposits in order to understand more fully their uptake into marine Mn deposits and their pathways through the oceans."

"The Atlantic Coal Institute illustrates the potential for high technology employment in Maritime Canada, by using local talent and the latest equipment to address a national market. Since I983, contract research for industry and government has generated 31 man-years of high-tech employment, added $2.3 million to the local economy and contributed new technology for Canadian coal. Industry now has access to new procedures for coal minerals analysis, pyrolysis, and geochemistry applied to industrial problems of exploration, beneficiation, conversion and combustion.Research at the Institute is market-driven, based on cost recoveries from contracts. The financial performance to date exceeds that of similar industrial research institutes in major cities and demonstrates that small isolated laboratories are cost-effective. Economic renewal of Canada's resource industries will require increased R&D which in turn can be a source of local employment and pride. Small research teams are more efficient but require an enlightened policy of contracting-out by big business and big government."

"The pendulum in Ottawa has swung dramatically from fiscal policy to monetary policy over the last several years. International trends indicate that the pendulum has to start its swing the other way, if Canada's mining industry is to maintain its preeminent position in the global mining arena. This article, which is based on a paper presented by the author at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Newfoundland Branch of CIM, identifies these trends and how they could interact with Canadian policy.IntroductionThe title of this paper is not a very imaginative or catchy one, but it states the topic quite succinctly, if not tersely. This paper looks into a crystal ball to see what might be in store for mine financing over the balance of the current decade.In the event that the reader feels some trepidation about the prospect that such a paper could seek to be the definitive work on the subject, it should be made clear at the outset that this is not the case. The author is, after all, not an economist, a scholar, a financial analyst, or a soothsayer, but is rather a simple accountant who has been closely involved with the mining industry, and the financing thereof, for some twenty years.The paper recognizes that, while a mine may be born when production begins, the mine is conceived when exploration starts. As this act of conception is obviously an essential part of mining, the financing of exploration is also covered in this paper. To attain a focus, this paper approaches the topic of mine financing in the nineties as follows: first, the major emerging forces in the industry are identified: and, second, the implications of each of these forces on financing are considered."

"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

"This paper describes a methodical approach to the estimation of the orientation and the magnitude of in-situ stresses. The study was performed at the Ruttan Mine, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. , a 6,000 T.P.D. underground operation, located in northern Manitoba, Canada. It involves an initial estimate to be made based upon: structural interpretation • virgin stress measurements conducted in other areas (world wide, regional)The verification of the prevailing stress regime was made by conducting CSIRO hollow inclusion(1) overcoring measurements. The current cost for a virgin stress determination is about $7000 per measurement(2) and the difficulty encountered in attaining a good reading is high. This paper will describe the analytical procedures employed at Ruttan in evaluating the in-situ stress magnitude and orientation based on three overcore tests. "Carbon addition in the oxide pelletizing process is a big concern at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant since 1976.Laboratory pot-grate testing carried out before the initial start-up of the Port-Cartier plant indicated that the nominal pelletizing grate capacity could be increased by fifteen per cent with a suitable carbon addition. Also an improved induration cycle offered the possibility of a significant energy reduction within the process with no adverse effect on pellet quality. A one-month plant scale program duplicated the lab test results and confirmed the anticipated cost saving by using these techniques. Since March 1980, Sidbec-Normines used coke addition as a current operation.This paper reviews briefly earlier laboratory and in-plant test work carried out to investigate the effects of adding carbon materials to the Fire Lake hematite concentrate, and presents operation techniques and plant results of carbon addition in the Port -Cattier pellet plant.IntroductionThe Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port-Cartier, Quebec, is designed to produce six million ton s per year of oxide pellet s. It is a Dravo-built two-line plant; one line to produce three million s tons per year of blast furnace grade pellets averaging 5.5 per cent silica, and another line of three million ton s to produce direct reduction grade pellets of about 2.0 percent silica.The laboratory pot-grate test program was conducted in 1977 at the British Steel Corporation Research Laboratories in England, with the assistance of J .E. Appleby, consultant to British Steel Corporation (overseas services) Limited.The purpose of that test program was to determine the optimum energy saving cycle and to study the physical and metallurgical effects on blast furnace and direct reduction pellets."

"The selective precipitation of iron as ammonium jarosite is a well-established industrial technology in base metals hydrometallurgy. It is a key technology in minimizing iron tenors which would be disruptive to downstream processing. It also provides a more readily filterable iron solid to better facilitate materials handling. This paper elucidates the fundamentals behind industrial iron precipitation. Then, the details of the successful optimization of an industrial ammonium jarosite circuit are presented.HYDROMETALLURGICAL IRON REMOVAL FUNDAMENTALS Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust (5% by weight) and is often found in complex ores such as sulphide-bearing formations. Iron represents an issue though during leaching, a technology which is widely used for the treatment of this type of ore: •,Iron has the particularity of forming hydroxides when leached under certain conditions. Iron hydroxides form a viscous gel, which is difficult to filter and traps valuable elements such as silver. •,Iron is solubilized along with other metals and interferes with the subsequent extraction steps. As a result, purification of the pregnant leach solutions is required to achieve economical extraction of base metals. In the 1960s, metallurgists developed iron precipitation processes for solution purification (Habashi, 1999). Nowadays, precipitation of iron bearing species, such as goethite, hematite or jarosite, has become one of the most common methods used in the industry to purify leach liquors. To be suitable, the precipitate has to be readily filterable and thus must not be too fine of particle size. "The response of cemented backfills subjected to simulated blast loadings is studied using centrifugal modelling techniques. Scaling requirements for centrifugal modelling are developed and the results of the similitude analysis show that an acceleration field is required to capture the true dynamic response of backfill models. Experiments have been conducted at various centrifugal accelerations. The effects of ring blasting were simulated by an impact loading on the exposed fill face. The behaviour of the cemented backfill was monitored with accelerometers as well as dynamic stress gauges.Cemented backfill response to impact loadings was found to depend strongly on simulated gravitational stress level. Results also show that the characteristics of the response changes with distance from the impact. Finally, the results of the models were used to predict prototype peak accelerations, velocities and displacements. The results reported in this study indicate that centrifuge modelling may be a useful tool for dynamic studies of blast damage to backfills. Centrifuge modelling can be carried out at low costs and can be used to design prototype instrumentation systems. IntroductionThe response of cemented mine backfills to blast loadings is of concern to the mining industry because these backfills provide local and regional support during ore pillar extraction. Considerable research has been reported on the static stability (Smith et al., 1983) and on effects of reinforcements on cemented backfills (Mitchell, 1989). However, information regarding dynamic aspects of cemented backfill is limited. O'Hearn and Swan (1989) reported on the response of cemented backfill to blast loading, but these blasts were not very dose to the backfill . A schematic representation of a rock-backfill system is shown in Figure I.The mechanics of transfer of explosive energy to rock and subsequently to the backfill, and the resulting responses, are complex. Achison (1968) listed more than twenty factor s affecting the blast fragmentation of rock and grouped these into the categories of explosive parameters, charge parameters and rock parameters. Although significant advances have been made, during the past two decades, in understanding the mechanics of blasting, the degree of uncertainty associated with predicting the behaviour of backfills subjected to dynamic loadings makes the application of simple design safety factors insufficient. Comprehensive testing programs or prototype instrumentation is required to evaluate the risks associated with blast or earthquake loadings on backfill."

"Classification is an important aspect of mineral processing plants and if not operated efficiently can compromise both the throughput and recovery of the circuit. This paper discusses the benefits that can be obtained by operating the classification section efficiently. Since classification in most of the mineral processing plants is carried out using either hydrocyclones or screens the case studies involving the two classifiers were used in the discussion. Studies where optimising the classification circuit lead to improvements in the performance of the overall plant were included to show the benefits of paying attention to this area that is usually neglected. The data from the mill-float mill float, SABC, and Single Stage SAG mill circuit case studies have shown that the circuit throughput can be increased throughputs without compromising recoveries by optimising the classification circuit. On plants where the ore can be liberated at coarser sizes the experimental results have shown that replacing hydrocyclones with high frequency screens can lead to improved plant throughput with no detrimental effect on recovery. The discussion has included information on design and operational considerations for plants that have or intend to use hydrocyclones or screens that could make the classification circuit more efficient.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the process in which particles are reduced in size mainly by crushing and grinding. In most mineral processing circuits comminution is carried out to liberate the valuable minerals prior to subjecting the ore to a recovery process were values are concentrated or extracted (Mainza, Evertsson, Benzer, Tavares, Powell, Rule, Plint, …, 2013). Comminution is an energy intensive process and is usually achieved in stages. It is common to have a classifier after each comminution stage. The process is carried out in stages to minimize energy usage and to improve the efficiency of the process in meeting product specifications. Although comminution circuits have been advancing classification has remained a key component of the comminution circuit design (Mainza et al., 2013). Mainza et al. (2013) summarised the role of classification in mineral processing circuit as: to allow material in the equipment that can promote high operational efficiency, to improve material handling in the circuit, to minimize overgrinding of material to reduce energy consumption, and to provide the best quality product to enter the next stage of processing. Classification stages are employed in comminution circuits to ensure that high throughputs are processed without compromising the product quality or to produce a fine product at relatively low energy. If neglected classification can have detrimental effects on plant performance."
