"This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. Consultations with equipment manufacturers and suppliers led to the development of the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled electric scooptram and the introduction of the France Loader Microscoop."

A 2-hectare uranium tailings area has been reclaimed. The exposed tailings of 1.4 hectares were capped with glacial till and vegetated with grasses and legumes. The water running through the tailings was diverted around the tailings in a line ditch and treated with sodium hydroxide and barium chloride. Difficulties occurred in placing the till capping because of the low bearing strength and the uneven surface of the tailings. This led to varying thicknesses of till and the need for manual labour in some areas. Total reclamation costs were $32,200, with vegetation establishment costs at $13,700 per hectare. This report provides a record of work for use in assessing the long-term suitability of these treatments.

"This paper describes some recent research done at CANMET in the areas of ion exchange and A VR (Acidification- Volatilization Reneutralization), as applied to the recovery of gold and cyanide, respectively. It also discusses the ways in which these two technologies may be combined in order to minimize the environmental impact of gold milling operations and optimize reagent usage. IntroductionGold milling operations can essentially be divided into those that carry out a liquid/solid separation after leaching and those that recover gold directly from a leach pulp. The former produce a barren solution which may contain considerable amounts of cyanide, either free or cornplexed with metals. The latter produce a similar solution but this is now part of a slurry rather than a clear stream. Due to its toxicity, any excess cyanide must be destroyed before the effluent is discharged into the environment. Ideally, this should be (and sometimes is) accomplished by natural degradation. However, in many cases natural degradation alone cannot remove the last traces of rnetallocyanide compounds from the effluent and , as a result, most Canadian gold producers utilize a supplementary chemical oxidation system. This not only increases the operating costs, but concerns have also arisen in recent years about the formation of ammonia as a result of the chemical oxidation of cyanide (via CN--CNO--HCNO-NH3) ·"

"Results of a program of dust research carried out at the Mines Branch Laboratory, Elliot Lake, indicate that dust-concentration estimates vary greatly, depending on the sampling instrument, the assessment technique and the properties of the dust cloud. The wide range of the ratio between the estimates by any pair of instruments shows that the correlation between the health hazard and dust-concentration estimates by most existing sampling instruments must be questionable. Important studies are being carried out to permit the definition of mine environments in more precise technical terms. The influence of size selection, the physical property measured, composition and sampling period on the assessment of the health hazard are discussed."

"The purpose of this paper is to identify a number of currently available opportunities for exploration and/or mine development in the industrial minerals field in southeastern Ontario. The paper is not intended as a complete review of the industrial minerals industry in southeastern Ontario, but highlights what are seen by the authors as areas where there are immediate opportunities for investment and growth.Traditional exploration targets in the Grenville Supergroup in southeastern Ontario have been vein-hosted gold deposits, industrial minerals, and base metals. In recent years, emphasis has increasingly shifted to industrial minerals, in response to changing technologies in the minerals-consuming manufacturing industries, and to an increasing awareness of the industrial mineral potential in this area.This paper examines the resurgence of interest in exploring for and developing a wide variety of industrial minerals, and it examines the work the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has done under the current Canada-Ontario Mineral Development Agreement. Specific development opportunities are identified in various commodity areas. Use oj the industrial minerals wollastonite and nepheline as substitutes for fluorspar in the formulation of synthetic steelmaking slags is also discussed."

"A semi-continuous belt of Aphebian magnesian extrusive and related sub volcanic rocks has been delineated by the authors over a distance of 150 kilometres in the central La Ronge lithostructural domain in Saskatchewan. They range in composition from peridotite to basalt and attain true thicknesses of up to 800 metres. For the most part, they are confined to a basal position in the La Ronge/Wasekwan metavolcanic sequence, and appear to have been extruded onto sialic crust. However, at Lynn Lake, Manitoba, in the eastern continuation of the domain, similar rocks seem to be found only at a relatively high stratigraphic level.Although metamorphism seems to have obliterated any quench textures that may have existed in these rocks, ultramafic pyroclastics, pillows and amygdules as well as intercalated, fine-grained clastic sediment attest to the volcanic nature of these rocks. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that these rocks are heterogeneous, with komatiites, tholeiitic picrites and even rocks with some of the characteristics of boninite all being present. The close temporal and spatial relationship of ""boninites"" and komatiites in the belt may suggest a high degree of Aphebian mantle inhomogeneity in the domain.Nickel-copper mineralization has been found in differentiated tholeiitic stocks within the La Range domain (e.g., at Lynn Lake), but none has yet been found in the ultramafic volcanics. However, the tholeiitic picrites do host one economic gold deposit - the Agassiz Mine at Lynn Lake .Because of the depleted nature of their mantle source, the ""boninites"" of the domain are not considered to be likely hosts for mantle-derived nickel sulphide mineralization. However, the opposite is true of the komatiites, and this points to the need for whole-rock geochemistry in setting priorities for nickel exploration in the belt. In contrast, all of the magnesian rocks of the domain probably have the same gold potential. Inasmuch as the geophysical response to gold mineralization in the domain is likely to be unpredictable, lake-sediment geochemistry, followed by base-of-till and/or alteration oriented lithogeochemistry, should be emphasized during gold exploration."

"Unique production and environmental problems are associated with multiple seam mining where dragfines are used for overburden and interburden removal. On the production side, the problems are decreased dragfine efficiency in chopdown operations, the general need for spoil rehandle, complications in sequencing stripping and coal handling operations, and potential stability problems in highly stacked spoil. Many variations of dragline methods have been reported in the literature to encounter these problems. Because of the physical properties and peculiar hydrology of sub-arctic region mining of multiple seams in such areas probably could not be done with the methods used in temperate regions.The properties of thawed material would make spoil hard to place in a stable manner and thus would influence the mini sequence. For instance, multiple seam mining which requires some rehandling of spoil and prolonged exposure of overburden and interburden material might be precluded by the instability of thawed spoil and therefore mining techniques have to be modified. Since the deployment and operation of a dragline in modes different from conventional schemes will affect productivity, it will be necessary to study the effects on production of changing the dragfine operational schemes. This paper presents a heuristic simulation model of multi-seam dragline operation of a sub-arctic mine that can be used to analyze the handling of overburden and detailed study of the dragfine performance."

"AbstractThe possibilities of deriving pertinent information about fractures in an oil pay from data obtained by core analysis are investigated. It is shown that it is possible to obtain an estimate of the fractured area per unit volume of the pay, and that the size of the fractures can be estimated if their shape is known. A suggestion of a routine procedure for the analysis of fractures is given.1.-IntroductionMany oil fields are producing essentially from cracks or fractures. Where this is the case, it is important to be able to obtain a knowledge of the size and distribution of those fractures in the oil pay. This knowledge has to be derived from the analysis of cores taken from the fields, as it is generally impossible to follow a fracture through the pay by direct means. The necessity of using statistical methods to extrapolate the meagre information obtained from the cores of the wells is therefore indicated.It is known that the fractures are much bigger than the diameter of the cores; thus, if they strike a core, the latter will generally fall into two pieces. The angle of the fracture with the vertical can be measured and, if oriented cores are taken, the exact position of the surface element representing the intersection of the fracture with the drill stem can be determined. Sometimes the edge of a fracture can be seen in a core. The number of •Cores that show such an edge can be noted. Of course, one has to be careful to distinguish between original fractures in the pay and fractures in the core caused by drilling operations. Only the former are relevant."

Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

"The Kemess porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit occurs in the Intermontane Belt of north-central British Columbia. The deposit is in andesitic to basaltic flows and tuffs which may be correlated with the Savage Mountain Formation of the Upper Triassic Takla Group. Most known chalcopyrite and molybdenite is associated closely with a 500-m-diameter zone of intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration. A zone of supergene enrichment, up to 30 m thick, underlies a leached capping about 20 m thick. The age of mineralization and the surrounding granodiorite and quartz monzonite pluton is Early Jurassic. K-Ar and Rb-Sr analyses indicate that the mineralization and alteration is slightly younger (l82±6 Ma) than the granitic intrusion (KAr: about 205±6 Ma; Rb-Sr: 190±4 Ma). The low 87Sr/J6Sr initial ratio for the granodiorite is typical of plutons in the Intermontane Belt.IntroductionKemess is a medium to small porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit with significant gold and silver values (Pilcher and McDougall, 1976). This paper describes the lithologies and alteration at this property; geochronology by Rb-Sr and K-Ar methods defines the ages of mineralization and surrounding plutons to be Early Jurassic.The property, located in the Thutade Lake area of northcentral British Columbia (NTS Map 94E; lat. 57°04'N; long. 126°44'W), is about 425 km northwest of Prince George (Fig. 1). Closest road access is 35 km southeast of Kemess. Final access must be by float plane or helicopter. The British Columbia Railway right of way passes 70 km to the southwest of theproperty.A prominent gossan zone at Kemess was staked in 1967 by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. following detection of geochemical anomalies during stream sampling the previous year. During 1968, 1969and 1971, Kennco completed 232 m of X-ray diamond drilling, conducted geological mapping and carried out geochemical sampling of silts and soils (Stevenson, 1969; B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, G.E .M., 1969 and 1971). Getty Mines Ltd. optioned Kemess in 1975and 1976. They remapped the area and diamond drilled 12 BQ and NQ holes, totalling 2065 m (B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Expl. B.C., 1975)."

"Mining industry has been the building blocks for human development through millennia and will continue to play its role in sustainability and meeting society’s needs for raw material. In the way towards sustainability, the next generation of efficient and heavy duty of Sandvik’s crushers, CH860 and CH865, are introduced for efficient crushing. As the secondary, tertiary and/or pebble crusher, these new crushers are designed to over perform in tough mining environment. Featuring higher crushing forces relative to the mantel diameter and 500 kW motor, combined with advanced automation system, i.e., sophisticated HydrosetTM and Automated Setting Regulation (ASRTM), combined with overpressure system with dedicated air supply in dust collar, etc., the new crushers provide higher safety, productivity, and reliability with the same foot-print of conventional cone crushers.Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills it makes sense to effort in fine crushing to save energy and protect environment. That has been the logic behind development and introducing stronger and more efficient crushers by Sandvik. The results on crushing hard iron and gold ores by CH865 have proven its efficiency in fine crushing at a higher productivity, availability and reliability rates through increasing throughput for defined size fraction and extended crushing chamber liner life.Within this paper the performance of the CH865 to deal with two different ores are presented discussed with a glance at how the downstream milling process can be benefited by saving energy and reducing the operation cost. In plant practice, the implementation of the new CH865 provides between 25 and 30% of the crushed ore in the size range of first step milling, i.e., < 2 mm, that offers opportunity for reduction in energy consumption in milling and even changing the process plant configuration by directly forwarded that part to gravity separation. Furthermore, potential of converting the rod mill to ball mill to improve productivity has been considered by plant engineers. Furthermore, some potential applications for such efficient crushers are brought into considerations and discussed. The new developments provide about 30% higher crushing force to efficiently deal with competent ores and pebbles. The CH860 and CH865 crushers are well suited to replace conventional secondary and tertiary crushers respectively; nevertheless, CH865 is virtual option for pebble crushing in SAG and AG milling circuits."

Instead, the bulk of the budget papers consisted of a wide variety of white papers on significant topics that would have a far reaching impact on the future of all Canadians.This month. Tax Notes examines the highlights of Mr. Lalonde&apos;s budget.IntroductionThe mining industry need not feel slighted in Finance Minister Lalonde&apos;s budget of February 15, 1984: the budget offered very little that would have an immediate impact of significance on any sector of the economy. Apart from some welcome announcements for the oil and gas industry to postpone the implementation of certain negative tax changes, the budget was surprisingly scant in terms of definitive tax proposals.While massive revisions in the rules relating to pensions, small businesses, commodity taxation and profit-sharing were brought forward, many of these proposals are set out in White Papers or other documents to be implemented into legislation only after further consultation. Canadians will accordingly have to wait for such promised benefits as increased RRSP and other pension contribution limits."

"All attempts to remove significant amounts of arsenic from enargite via neutral or reductive pyro routes have required operating temperatures between 600 and 700 º C, too high to propose an equipment development program. Operating at reduced pressures, or using hydrogen or elemental sulphur as a sweeping gas did not help to lower these temperatures. Admixing iron powder gave excellent results, but still required 700 º C. By fortuity, in recent experiments to produce tennantite from an enargite mineral sample, it was observed that enargite was completely converted to bornite, chalcopyrite with minor residual tennantite within an hour at 400-450 ºC. This is believed to be due to the presence of pyrite in the mineral sample treated. All earlier decomposition work appears to have been done on predominantly enargite (i.e. low pyrite) samples, or at high operating temperatures, ignoring possible reactions at lower temperature. The decomposition of enargite into iron substituted tennantite plus some bornite under evolution of liquid elemental sulphur, followed by further decomposition of this tennantite into bornite and volatile arsenic sulphides, appears experimentally feasible at these low temperatures and mimics described ore genesis pathways at > 250 ºC in saline solutions. "OUT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, we have a legendary creature called ""The Sasquatch,"" a large ape-like creature which, according to those who claim to have seen it, somewhat resembles the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas. Through the years, the legend bas been perpetuated by hunters and prospectors who return from remote wilderness areas with fantastic tales about hairy creatures, twice the height of an average human being, who leave 2-ft-long footprints in the soft forest floor. However, the existence of this creature bas never been proven and the attitude in British Columbia circles is that the whole thing constitutes either a great discovery or a giant hoax, and is about equally unbelievable either way.The Sasquatch, however, is not the only giant in British Columbia. If you find the Sasquatch story un-believable, you'll fi nd it just as hard to believe what is happening in the mining industry out west. We have opened four new mines so far this year (1967), another mine is expected to be brought into production before the end of the year and any mining man will tell you it's just the start of a mining boom which will continue for many years if metal prices are maintained and the federal government sees fit to discard the taxation changes pro-posed in the Carter Royal Commission Report regarding mining."

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami Division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled f or particle size distributions, chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMA T. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper cleaning flotation stages and to determine how over-all silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products. "The access tunnels for the Donkin-Morien Mine in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, comprise two parallel tunnels driven through a sedimentary sequence of sandstone, siltstone and mudstone to intersect the Harbour Coal Seam under the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 3.5 km offshore (Fig. 1). The No. 2 tunnel was driven a total distance of 3579 m using a 7.6 m diameter Loyat full-face tunnel boring machine (TBM) and was supported by steel sets. The No. 3 tunnel was initially driven a distance of 1027 m using drill and blast methods (dimensions 7.6 m wide by 5.3 m high) supported by rock bolts and shotcrete. This tunnel was then completed (front March 1986 to February 1987) using the tunnel boring machine to a distance of 3573 m.During the period May 1983 to December 1984, a major geotechnical research program was undertaken in the Donkin-Morien tunnels by Golder Associates in conjunction w,ith CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (Yuen et al., 1985). The research program included the monitoring of the performance of the TBM and drill and blast drivages, and the study of the thrusting characteristics and rock-interaction of the TBM excavation. The main emphasis of the research program was on the collection of field data which was to be made available in the form of a comprehensive report for the future use of others who might wish to carry out a detailed interpretation and analysis. The information gained from the program was also used during the tunnel"

"This paper reports on a CANMET-funded examination of less conventional underground coal mining methods. These methods are documented and those that show the most promise for application to western Canadian conditions are discussed in detail.IntroductionIn recent years, mining considerations and economics have encouraged a transition from underground mining to surface mining. However, a change in market conditions or the development of superior underground mining methods may reverse this trend . Should this happen, the industry must be quick to respond and have information available on the latest developments of underground mining technology. In time, deposits of high-quality coal, which are easily accessible to surface mining, will be depleted and a change to underground mining methods will require consideration. The economic transition point between surface to underground will be a major determinant in maintaining a competitive edge. For these reasons, it is important to keep abreast of improvements in underground mining methods. To meet this objective, CANMET awarded a research contract to Monenco Consultants Limited, to investigate unconventional underground mining methods that show a potential for western Canadaoi. This paper presents the results of this investigation."
