"Concrete is a common denominator to the building process and portland cement is an integral and necessary component of concrete. The cost of portland cement is nominal and its cost comprises, in most instances, a small portion of the total cost of ""put-in-place"" concrete.The domestic demand for portland cement in Canada is projected to be slightly less than 11 million short tons in 1980. In order to achieve this projected goal, stabilization or lowering of the cost of put-in-place construction is necessary. This enhancement of the cost of building can be achieved by:(1) improving the building process;(2) refining and improving design techniques; and(3) developing improved and economical concrete products.Some of the techniques and materials that will lead to building cost stabilization include systems building in its broadest sense, slipforming, precasting, prestressing, computer design, lightweight aggregates, fibrous concrete and integration of building components."

Successful relationships between mining companies and local stakeholders are now an essential part of the social contract of “doing business” (Prescott, 1995). The methodology presented in this paper is designed to assist mining companies in understanding and building relationships with diverse stakeholder groups. The methodology starts by recognizing that mining projects have a natural life cycle which can be used to identify when new external affairs strategies are required. In designing an external affairs strategy, the first step is to set objectives that are compatible with the overall objectives of the mining project. The management team then identifies the main stakeholder groups and seeks to understand the priorities and inter-relationships of the individual stakeholders. The result of this stakeholder analysis is an understanding of the Degrees of Influence of each of the stakeholder groups along with a relationship map which illustrates the strong interactions between stakeholders. The company is then prepared to take a proactive approach to building relationships with the primary stakeholders. This methodology was developed by BHP to assist with the federal government environmental approval process for the development of Canada’s first diamond mine. BHP has successfully used the methodology in three different phases of the NWT Diamonds Project and is now applying the methodology to mining and development projects around the world.

Medium and low carbon steels, modified with uranium, were studied in order to evaluate the influence of uranium on forge ability, mechanical 11roperties, response to heat treatment and microstructure. Uranium contents ranged up to 0.70 per cent. The medium carbon steels are hot short if the uranium content exceeds about 0.35 per cent. More uranium can be tolerated in low carbon steels. The hot shortness is caused by the formation of intergranular phase UFe2. Critical transformation temperatures, Jominy hardenability, and resistance to tempering are not significantly affected by the 11resence of uranium. Similarly, uranium has little or no effect on the tensile properties of carbon steels. The addition of uranium has a favourable effect 11n the stress-rupture characteristics and some beneficial effect on fatigue properties. However, more results are required for verification. In the steels investigated, it seems that most of the uranium carbide combines to form complex inclusions of U (0, C, N) or (C, N), rich in oxygen or nitrogen or both.

"Detailed studies have been conducted on the dispersion of uranium in stream waters and sediments around various types of mineralization and hitherto unexplained anomalous areas in the Okanagan Valley and Highland region of south-central British Columbia. These studies were part of the jointly funded and planned Federal-Provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program of the Geological Survey of Canada and the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. Statistical analysis of regional data indicates that U in stream waters and sediments varies considerably for different rock types, thus affecting data interpretation. In addition, the data demonstrate a poor correlation between U in stream waters and their associated sediments which can be largely accounted for by variations in climate and water and sediment composition. Regional trends in the distribution of U can be explained in terms of the above secondary factors as well as primary metallization phenomena.Significant correlations between U and F, and U and Mo can be explained by certain magmatic and mineral-forming processes. U shows little correlation with other base metals.The dispersion characteristics of U in the vicinity of Miocene "" basal type "" mineralization ; uraniferous pegmatite terranes, anomalous lineaments in granitic terranes and high-background volcano-sedimentary areas are discussed. Highly anomalous U concentrations in waters and sediments may not always be indicative of mineralization, and guidelines for interpretation require a sound knowledge of the geological and secondary processes operative in the area."

"Flotation plants typically aim to maximise recovery at or above a target grade. As the ore from the mine varies, operators increase or decrease the mass pull in different flotation banks by adjusting air and level set points in order to achieve target concentrate grade. A methodology has been developed to maximise overall recovery at target grade by determining the optimal mass pull for each bank. However, the approach of targeting equal grade for each ore type in the deposit leads to sub-optimal overall recovery. This is because some ore types sacrifice a large amount of recovery to reach target grade while others easily achieve target grade and can be processed at higher than target grade for little or no loss in recovery. Processing different ore types at different grades and blending the concentrates therefore gives a higher overall recovery.This paper presents a case study where an 80 year production forecast was made for a large Chilean copper concentrator in feasibility stage. A circuit model was created using SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator (IGS) for the different ore types to be processed. The model was calibrated from standard rougher flotation tests (MFT), cleaner tests and from the results of plant surveys of similar operations. The pull rates for each bank in the circuit were determined to achieve an optimal graderecovery curve for each ore type. These curves were combined at different concentrate grades for each ore type to obtain the mathematically optimal overall recovery at target grade. The paper shows a methodology for obtaining an optimal combination of operating conditions for each ore type to maximise overall recovery at a set combined concentrate grade."

"This paper details the process and methodology followed to rehabilitate a rectangular ventilation shaft, situated in the Free State region of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields in South Africa. The shaft consists of seven compartments where self-mining of the sidewalls had taken place and damage to the decayed steel work in the shaft had taken place, thus limiting access down the shaft. The paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during the project and may provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The ventilation shaft forms part of the Phakisa Mine, situated in the Welkom area of the Free State province of South Africa, and is located in the Southern part of the Witwatersrand Basin, one of the world’s largest known and richest gold deposits (Figure 1).As is typical in South African gold mines situated in the Witwatersrand basin, the shaft is 1 770 metres deep (below collar). The shaft was sunk during the early 1940’s and comprised a rectangular shape with 7 compartments, used for both rock hoisting and men and material winding, respectively, with a single lift “Mary-Anne” compartment. Early in 2003, the mine decided to change the shaft from a downcast hoisting shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft. The conveyances, ropes, winders and headgear (head frame) were removed and replaced with a high volume fan delivering 323m³/s of air at a pressure of 4.2Pa on surface. The up-cast velocity in the shaft was 6.5m/s, however this reduced significantly with the scaling of the shaft and the restrictions at shaft bottom. Although Harmony had converted the shaft from a downcast service shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft some years back, the shaft steel work in the barrel of the shaft was left intact. Over the years, the steelwork in the shaft had decayed (rust and grime) and portions of this steelwork fell down the shaft. Concurrent with the decaying steel work, portions of the shaft lining had collapsed and it was getting progressively worse."

AKNOWLEDGE of the density of a pulp or suspension is frequently required by the millman, to whom fluctuations in density, which occur in all mill circuits, are of importance and interest. There ,are many w.ays currently in use to determine density and probably the most common method is to take samples of the pulp. The proper sampling of the material is no easy matter, particularly when the pulp contains a sand fraction which settles rapidly. For example, when filling a liter container from the overflow of a classifier, it is al-most impossible to fill the can completely and yet prevent overflow. If there is an overflow, the pulp remaining in the can invariably has an excess of sand and the indicated density will be too high. To surmount such difficulties, and to obtain a continuous indication of the density of a pulp at any desired depth, the simple indicator shown diagrammatically in Figure l was designed by the writer in 1951. The Snap Lake Diamond Project is located approximately 220 km northeast of Yellowknife, NT, Canada at an approximate latitude of 63?35?. The project location is within the zone of continuous permafrost; measured ground temperatures are about ?2?C at 10 to 20 m depth below surface. The site is located on a peninsula jutting into Snap Lake. The site is generally barren of vegetation, except for some isolated areas with low trees located in topographic lows and near the shoreline of Snap Lake. As part of phased evaluation process with regards to the mining project, an Advanced Exploration Program was undertaken in 2000 and 2001. This program included the underground extraction of a bulk sample of kimberlite, which was processed on site. A Processed Kimberlite Containment (PKC) area was required as part of this program. The area chosen as the PKC facility was a small inland lake, called Inland Lake #1, on the peninsula. Construction of the PKC area required the construction of two dams, one on either end of the lake. At the south end of the lake, Dam 1 was constructed partially on a talik and partially on continuous permafrost. Dam 2 was constructed entirely on permafrost. The effects of the remote location, selection of suitable construction materials and permafrost conditions on the designs of the dams are discussed. A description of the design elements and construction schedule are provided. A review of the performance of these two dams, in terms of settlement, deformations, pore pressures and thermal regime, over the last several years is provided.

"Gallium oxide is an important semiconductor material used in optoelectronic devices (flat panel and solar cell) catalysts and sensors. One of the methods to produce ?-Ga2O3 is the so-called hydrothermal route. It is practiced by Neo Gallium Compounds and comprises of two steps: (1) the production of mainly gallium-oxy-hydroxide in a pressure vessel by reacting metallic gallium with water at 200-220 ºC and (2) the calcination of gallium-oxy-hydroxide at 700-750 ºC to convert it into ?-Ga2O3. This paper describes this pressure hydrometallurgy process supported with relevant thermodynamic data and presents the characteristics of the ?-Ga2O3 powder produced for commercial purposes. INTRODUCTIONGallium is a relatively new metal, having been predicted by D. Mendeleev in 1871, discovered by P.E. Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875, and first commercially produced in the USA in 1943. Gallium is not rare, being more abundant in the earth crust than antimony, bismuth, molybdenum, silver and tungsten. However, few gallium minerals exist in nature, and the dispersion of gallium within other minerals add to the complexity of its recovery. In practice, gallium is found in dispersed state primarily in bauxites and in some sphalerites, and, to a much smaller extent, in some coals. At present, a very large proportion of the primary gallium in the world is recovered as a by-product of aluminum plants, mostly Bayer plants, where gallium is extracted from a bleed of the Bayer liquor (Roskill, 2011). In 2011, world production of primary gallium was estimated at 200 metric tonnes. In addition, there is a significant contribution of recycling to the overall yearly availability of the metal.Gallium exhibits fairly remarkable properties: it is liquid above 29.76 ºC, can be supercooled, and with its high boiling point (2204 ºC), is the metal with the widest liquid range. Gallium is magnetic, and is an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity. Gallium also displays a marked anisotropic electrical conductivity (Roskill, 2011). All these properties render gallium almost irreplaceable in the semiconductors (GaAs, GaN, GaSb, GaP wafers) and the optoelectronics industry (flat panel, solar cell)."

The over-all slope angle of between 55 and 60 degrees at the Adams Mine necessitates control blasting on the final pit walls. The control blasting techniques used are pre-shearing and buffer blasting. Pre-shearing with 2'I2-inch holes on 5-foot centers is used in areas where jointing and rock type are not conducive to smooth stable walls. Buffer blasting with 12'/4-inch holes is used in areas where the rock is competent. Control blasting adds to the operating costs, but can result in substantial savings in increased slope angle and reduced stripping.

Hydraulic fracturing and hydraulic shearing techniques are essential for the development of unconventional oil & gas and geothermal resources. Such techniques will also play a key role in the development of CO2 sequestration, and management of high stresses encountered with deep mining. However, the optimal design of hydraulic injections is often limited by continuum treatments of the rock mass without consideration of the influence of the natural fractures present. These may interact with the hydraulic fracture to promote offsets or arrest, or may cause the natural fractures to undergo shear and dilation. Given the limited access to the rock afforded by deep boreholes common to oil & gas and geothermal projects, advanced numerical modeling is critical for understanding key mechanisms and interactions. In this work, we first present a coupled hydromechanical distinct-element model focusing on the propagation of a hydraulic fracture. Normal and shear displacements arising from the generated hydraulic fractures are subsequently integrated into a fracture flow model for detailed analysis of specific flow behaviour and fracture permeability. For this, a scanned 3-D profile of a natural fracture is used to correlate surface roughness to dilation as a function of shearing. Fracture flow is computed at different time steps corresponding to different fracture propagation states and geometries. Modeling results indicate that the opening of a tensile hydraulic fracture is accompanied by millimetre-scale shear displacements associated with slip and wedging between adjacent blocks. This may leads to a mismatch between the upper and lower walls of the fracture if asperities are irregular and strong enough. However, fluid-induced tensile fractures have low Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC), and associated millimetre-scale shear displacements are too small to ensure a significant offset of asperities that prevent a fully-elastic closure when the hydraulic fracture is depressurized. Injection of proppant is thus critical to keeping hydraulic fracture apertures open. Future work is planned that will see the models calibrated against field data including microseismic event locations, magnitudes and source mechanisms, tiltmeter deformations, stress change, and pore pressures.

The question of whether the air curtain principle could be used under conditions prevailing in Canadian metal mines was investigated. A vertical, portable BERRY air curtain was tested, at first in a wind tunnel built at Ecole Polytechnique at full scale (8-by 8-ft cross section) to simulate a drift and its lateral connections, and then in the haulage ways of a metal mine under actual conditions. The results permit us to predict under what conditions this type of air curtain is capable of acting as an air stopping or flow regulator and how it could be further developed.

"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. Most authorities agree that the dissolution of gold from an ore takes place according to the Elsner equation first stated in 1846. The main requirements for the dissolution reaction to proceed are:(1) that the gold be clean.(2) that the gold be exposed to the solution.(3) that the cyanide solution be active, i.e., not over loaded with impurities which could retard or inhibit the reaction.(4) that an adequate supply of oxygen be available (from air).When the above conditions are met, cyanidation becomes basically a mechanical operation.Minerals such as quartz, calcium carbonate are relatively inert to cyanide though they may give rise to mechanical troubles. Most ores present an assortment of chemical problems, depending upon the constituent present, which react to the solution to varying degrees. It should be borne in mind that minerals which are disturbing to the operation, though present in small amounts, usually exceed the weight of the gold by several hundred times. In addition, the application of flotation and other forms of concentration to gold ores, previous to cyanidation, concentrates not only the gold, but also the other heavy minerals and these complicate the chemistry of the process.

The industrial minerals industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is a significant contributor to the provincial economy. The variety ofcommodities produced reflects the diverse geological environment from which they come. A highlight of the past decade has been the continuing development of dimension stone quarries, with producers now active in anorthosite, gabbro, granite and sandstone. Other dimension stone prospects have been identified and are in various stages of assessment and development. Western Newfoundland hosts a large resource of limestone, dolomite and marble. It provides raw material for industries that produce Portland cement, agricultural limestone and aggregate, as well as chemical-grade limestone and dolomite products. In western Labrador, dolomitic marble is quarried for use in the production of self-fluxing iron ore pellets. The recent opening of a new gypsum quarry at Fischells Brook signalled the beginning of a new era in the commercial production ofgypsum, a commodity which the province has produced since the 1950s. Hopefully it will emulate the nearby Flat Bay Quarry (now closed) which was a long-time exporter to markets along the U.S. eastern seaboard, in addition to supplying local demands. Oil production and continuing exploration in the Newfoundland offshore has renewed interest in local barite deposits for potential use in drilling fluids. Already there has been some production from the Collier Point deposit, and at Buchans, an existing plant is being refurbished to recover barite from a large tailings pond. Emerging new industries include the development of an antimony mine in central Newfoundland, the development of silica deposits near Labrador City for silicon metal production, and reactivation of the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine. The province has many deposits with development potential such as rare metals at Strange Lake, white marble at Roddickton and salt deposits near St. George's Bay region.

The model for methane removal from the workings directly behind an advancing longwall as presented in this paper may be used for U-ventilated cross or length-wise systems of longwall advance, starting from the boundaries of the extraction field. In mines with high methane concentrations, Uventilated longwall extraction from the boundary of the extraction field produces a methane risk. The risk is manifested by a higher methane concentration at the end of the longwall, upper gate and incline. The methane in increasing concentrations, which is emitted mainly from the workings with caved areas, appears towards the end of the longwall and in the upper gate. The graphical model of the longwall provided includes both the workspace of the longwall and the caved area. Based upon a model of the rock distribution in the cave, a ventilation model comprising two standard air splits and large number of crosswise air splits has been constructed. Simulations indicate that if the shearer is not present in the longwall, the air distribution in the caved area is symmetrical. The presence of the shearer, both at the bottom and the top of the longwall, causes an asymmetrical air distribution in the cave, that is the asymmetrical flows in the goaf and longwall workspace and in the inflows and outflow between those regions. This phenomenon causes an increase in methane concentration at the end of the wall and at the upper gate. The methane removal method proposed for workings with a caved area directly behind the advancing U-ventilated longwall, starting from the boundary of the field, consists of the removal of methane-air mixtures from the caved area with the boom pipes. These booms may be of several meters long and may be extended if necessary. The insertion of the boom pipes into the cave towards the end of the longwall and connecting them with the general methane removal system creates negative pressure causing a change in the depression field, which is the aerodynamic potential field in the goaf area around the ends of the boom pipes. This will promote the extraction of the methane-air mixture from voids and the goaf cracks, and the area from which methane is being extracted may extend to the side of the cave. This is a positive phenomenon, which could result in the methane flow from the goaf into the airflow in the longwall workspace decreasing or even stopping. A reduction in the methane flow into the longwall workspace with extractions booms will be advantageous for the production continuity. Based on the floor load model for the rocks in the cave and the methane-removal boom load model, the value of the force required to move the boom behind the advancing wall has been calculated. Strength calculations for the pipe were performed using a finite elements method. The analysis results, as well as the comparison of the pipe material effort to the strength parameters of steel, which can serve as piping material (for the assumed load conditions), lead to a belief that the proposed boom construction satisfies the strength requirements.

"Minerals processors can improve production by using the best available control technology to control their operations. Many mines use expert systems that can provide improved results over manual or basic control, but better results can be achieved using multivariable predictive control. Over the past few years, the application of multivariable predictive control has gained acceptance in many mining processes and has recently proven to be suitable for some of the most challenging processes. This advanced control technology has been successfully applied to a wide variety of processes; alumina digestion, ball mills, CCD/thickeners, kilns/calciners/roasters, heat exchangers/evaporators, and more demanding processes like SAG mills and flash smelters.This paper discusses the needs of advance control technologies in the mining industry, including the impact of these technologies on best practices for implementation and long term sustainability. Results of the multivariable predictive control applications in mineral processing are discussed, and in particular the application to the SAG mill. In addition, an example of the benefits improvement that can be achieved with this technology is presented.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a long term perception in the mainstream mineral processing industry that best advanced control solution is an expert system. There a numerous instances of expert systems used for control of SAG mills, as well as kilns or roasters, thickeners and more recently flotation circuits. Many of theses expert systems have been installed by small, independent companies or by OEMs of processing equipment. Undoubtedly these expert systems have provided millions in benefits to the owners of mineral processing plants.It is this author’s proposition that it is a misconception to believe that expert systems are the best solution for mineral processors, and that in many cases the best solution is Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC). Better control and optimal operations can be achieved through the use of MPC. Another important consideration when considering advanced control technologies is the implementation and support effort. These types of applications have been known to deteriorate, even to disuse, when they are not kept up to date with changes to the process or equipment. The audience is invited to listen to discussion and draw their own opinion. The author has been involved in installing control systems for over 20 years, advanced solutions for over 15 years, and has had privilege to consult with many miners concerning the selection and application of advanced controls over the past 6 years."

"Rare earth separation by solvent extraction (SX) requires multiple separation plants each consisting of many extract, scrub, and strip stages to separate the individual metals. SX modeling advances have brought benefits to circuit design and process optimization by quickly narrowing test conditions without the need for exhaustive laboratory studies. Modeling can be used to optimize circuit configuration, O/A ratios, and acidities, which allows for CAPEX and OPEX savings. A comparison between pilot plant data and the results expected from modeling is presented for rare earth separations with CYANEX® 572.INTRODUCTIONRare earth separations can be difficult due to limited separation between the elements (Xie, Zhang, Dreisinger, & Doyle, 2014). This requires relatively complex solvent extraction circuits utilizing multiple extract, scrub, and strip stages as well as multiple SX configurations to achieve the desired metal purities. Designing rare earth circuits can be complex, and significant time and testing may be necessary to determine the required staging and optimal conditions.Circuit modeling for rare earth separations has been introduced to the industry using CYANEX® 572 extractant (Soderstrom, McCallum, Jakovljevic, & Quilodran, 2014). CYANEX® 572 is an acidic organophosphorus extractant formulation which has a weaker ligand-metal complex strength than that of the traditionally used phosphonic acid extractants. "Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

IN discussing stope filling, or backfilling, at the Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., a brief description of the problem will first be presented. The Sullivan orebody is a replacement in quartzite, with the ore con-forming, for the most part, with the bedding. The dip of the vein, apart from local irregularities, averages about 15 degrees near the outcrop in the southwest section of the mine, and steepens to almost 40 degrees at the northeast end of the mine. The thickness varies from a few feet to over 200 feet at the widest sections. The mineable length along the strike has averaged about 4,000 feet between the 4,600 and 3,900 levels-the section under discussion in this paper. To date, 28,000,000 tons of ore have been mined by the room-and-pillar method. Prior to 1930, all ground opened up had been supported by ore pillars, left during mining operations. From that time, the recovery of the ore from these pillars has been given serious consideration. Backfilling, as being carried on today, is the result of this study and is being done for two reasons: (1) to allow extraction of the ore pillars, and (2) to minimize subsidence of the hanging-wall rock, except where forced caving is found desirable. PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENTS LEADING TO BACKFILLING When the Sullivan orebody was first opened up, early in the century, there appeared to be low-grade sections of the vein sufficient in extent to serve as permanent support for the roof. However, as mining extended into sections of the vein that showed continuous ore over greater areas, wooden cribs, filled with waste and low-grade ore, were erected. In some stopes, these cribs were as large as 40 ft. by 100 ft. in plan and from 50 ft. to 60 ft. in height, but it was soon realized that this method of support was inadequate. As mining progressed, it was found necessary to leave ore pillars, which eventually became the sole system of support. At first, these pillars were left at irregular intervals, but later they were laid out at definite locations on the mine plans, and these locations were adhered to as closely as mining would permit.
