Orogenic gold deposits represent a major class of deposits that are found in various rock types of various ages. Those deposits show a strong structural control that usually complicates their interpretation at the regional and deposit scales. The Rosebel Gold district located in Surinam (South America) is hosted in a Paleoproterozoic greenstone belt of the Guiana Shield, and has been recently classified as one of those orogenic gold deposits. The gold district comprises eight distinct deposits located along three different structural trends and within different rock types. The mineralization is undefonned and shows a strong structural control characteristic of orogenic gold deposits. All the deposits of the Rosebel Gold district have been subject to a detailed structural analysis that has led to the elaboration of a new structural model for the whole gold district, which is now differing considerably from the previous models. This characterization had direct implications at three different scales. 1- While the older models were considering some areas of the property as gold-barren, the new structural model has led to recent exploration campaigns which have revealed positive results. 2- At the deposit scale, the comprehension of the various vein systems and of the folding of the host rocks has helped the establishment of optimized drilling campaigns. 3- At the mining scale, the comprehension of the architecture of the veins helps for the elaboration of optimized mining method. This study thus shows that the structural analysis of orogenic gold deposits is critical, and should be a priority for exploration and production in any mine.

"The research question of the present work is the following: at which speed should a rotary sample divider operate in order to produce representative samples of iron ore concentrate? In order to solve this problem, the representativity of a rotary sample divider treating iron ore concentrate from Iron Ore Compagny (IOC) Carol Lake mine in Labrador City was studied in the laboratory of mineral processing of “CEGEP de Sept-Îles”. The rotary sample divider speeds tested are: 20, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100%. The results show differences in both weight and particles sizes distributions with respect to the various rotation speed used. 20% has shown to be the speed that generates an almost normally distributed samples for both weight and particle size. As the speed of the rotary sample divider increases, the polygon of frequency for weight distribution progressively becomes a two modal distribution curve. 40, 50 and 100% speeds generate normal samples distribution curves with respect to particles size only. 60 and 80% are the speed to be avoided since they generate multiple modal distribution curves for both weight and particles size.IntroductionIn the mining industry, samples representativity is part of the key elements for management decisions. In fact, “Sampling provides vital information to plant operators, clients and geologists to profitably run and operate iron ore mines and plants” (Kevin Thorne et al. 2007). At the laboratory scale, several types of techniques’ are currently used to perform sampling. This include: grapping, alternate spading, quartering, riffles divider and rotating divider etc.. Among all these instruments, rotary divider is the most commonly used. Nevertheless, the usage of a rotary divider is not a guaranty for samples representativity since the results have shown to be related to running speed of this instrument. For the present research work, the idea is to use iron ore concentrate to quantify the representativity of a rotary sample divider. In other words, the research idea is to determine the speed at which a rotary sample divider produces representative samples while treating iron ore concentrate from Carol Lake mine. The present report will give an overview of the methodology used and the principal results obtained."

"The Moa JV was formed in December 1994 as a 50/50 joint venture between Sherritt Inc. and General Nickel Company S.A. of Cuba. The joint venture consists of the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba processing plant in Moa, Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Throughout its now nearly 23-year history, the Moa Joint Venture has faced a number of global, operational and process challenges. Global challenges have included high input costs such as for fuel oil and sulphur, as well as low nickel prices. Operational and process challenges have included increasing ore haulage distances, decreasing ore Ni + Co grades, and increasing ore impurity contents. For example, increases in impurities such as Mg and SiO2 in the ore result in increasing acid demand in leaching and decreasing solids content of preheated leach feed slurry, respectively. In spite of these challenges, the mixed sulphide production capacity from the Moa Joint Venture has increased from 12,500 to 37,000 t/y Ni + Co since 1994 by judiciously targeting expansion projects and by continuously performing process and operational improvements.INTRODUCTION The Pedro Sotto Alba high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant at Moa Bay, Cuba has a long history (Maslenitzkiy, 1969; Chalkley, 1996; Carlson, 1960; Roy, 1961; Carlson 1961). The plant was constructed by Moa Bay Mining Company and started up in late 1959 after several years of process development by Freeport Nickel Company, including operation of a 10 t/d plant in Hoskins Mound, Texas and a 50 t/d plant in Port Nickel, Louisiana (Southwick, 2004), as well as development work by Chemical Construction Company (Chemico) to precipitate metal sulphides (Roy, 1955a; Roy, 1955b). The Moa plant had an original reserve of 50,000,000 t of ore, graded at 1.35 wt% Ni, 0.146 wt% Co, 3.70 wt% Si, 1.00 wt% Mg and 4.5 wt% Al. At original design rates of 2,000 kt/y of ore, the design capacity of the plant was around 25,000 t/y Ni + Co as a mixed sulphide product, which would be shipped to the Port Nickel Refinery in Louisiana for processing. In 1960, the plant changed ownership and was restarted in 1961 under Cuban management. Between 1961 and 1989, the plant was also supported by involvement from the former USSR, supplying spare parts and consumables. In 1994, Sherritt Inc. partnered with the General Nickel Co. S.A. of Cuba and formed the Moa Joint Venture. This joint venture includes the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba HPAL processing plant in Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Under this partnership, ore is processed in Cuba to produce a nominally 55 wt% Ni and 5 wt% Co mixed sulphide product that is shipped to Canada and processed by Corefco to produce class 1 nickel, high grade cobalt and byproduct ammonium sulphate fertilizer."

Although the title of this paper focuses attention to the Winnipeg coal market the following remarks should be considered applicable not only to conditions in Winnipeg but to the whole western coal industry. Technical descriptions of coal and coal-burning have been omitted. These details are already covered in other numerous publications. In discussing a market the first consideration must be the product which is required to be sold. The class, quality and price at the point of origin must be taken into account and therefore this feature will be discussed before proceeding to outline conditions in the Winnipeg local market. The writer thinks of coal as a manufactured article, not, as it is generally considered, a fuel to be dug from the ground and dumped into the consumer's bin. The work of manufacturing must be considered in detail:- 1. Consider first the coal as it is in the ground: (a) What is its fuel value? (b) Where is its market? © With what will it be in competition? 2. Consider secondly: (a) What it will cost to mine the coal. (b) What has to be done to prepare the coal for market after it is mined. This must be considered in conjunction with the answer to question 1 ©. 3. Thirdly, consider the method of business to be adopted by the producer:- (a) Is it proposed to build a market on price? Or (b) On quality?

"The Mic Mac property comprises 994 acres held under mining concession and approximately 2,000 acres held under development licenses in Bousquet township, Abitibi county, western Quebec.Gold was first discovered in this locality by Tom Duval in June, 1936. In February, 1937, Cassels Duval Mines, Limited, was incorporated under Quebec charter to take over the property. In September, 1937, the property was examined by Agaura Explorations, Limited, and an option agreement was signed on October 6th, 1937. In June, 1938, an option for complete ownership was taken on adjoining claims belonging to Norgold Mines, Limited, and in September, 1938, a mining plant was installed and the sinking of a 3-compartment shaft begun. In June, 1939, an option was taken by Mic Mac Explorations, Limited, on seven claims of Mooshla Gold Mines Company, Limited, that adjoined the Norgold block to the east. In December, 1939, a new company, Mic Mac Mines, Limited, was formed, amalgamating the Cassels Duval, Norgold, and Mooshla claims, as well as two claim groups to the west of the mine known as the Vaughan and West Cassels groups."

"IntroductionIN THE preceding paper we have learned about Canada's resources of metallurgical coal. There is an adequate amount in Nova Scotia, a very large reserve on the eastern flank of the Rocky mountains, and a strictly limited supply on the Pacific coast. Added to these is an unknown quantity of coking coal in the Peace River district, at present rather isolated but possibly capable of industrial development in the future.The chief use of metallurgical coal is to make iron and steel. For this, an adequate supply of iron ore is required. So we should now scan the Canadian supply of iron ore, the possibility of its increasing use at home, and the probable markets abroad.Trade in iron ore tends to be international, as is the case with many other raw materials. The present tendency with iron and steel, in contrast, is to keep its manufacture within national boundaries, and there is no evidence that this will change much in the years to come. We should keep these two points clearly in mind when considering the disposal of iron ore from Canadian mines. We should remember, also, that the modern blast furnace and steel plant has such a large output that a correspondingly large population, reasonably compact, is needed to consume its products.Large Ore Supply in East, Small in WestCanada has now four major iron ore fields, well situated to serve adequately the eastern half of the country. Wabana .and Labrador are well placed to serve overseas markets and plants on the eastern seaboard and eastern interior of the United States and Canada."

"Introduction to the Syncrude OperationSyncrude Canada Ltd., located 42 km north of the city of Fort McMurray, Alberta, (Fig. I) is an integrated operation that has produced synthetic crude oil from the Athabasca oil sand deposit since 1978.The operation, consisting of a surface mine, an extraction plant, a bitumen upgrader, and a utilities plant, is currently capable of producing over 60 million barrels of crude oil per year. Production is expected to increase to 70 million barrels of crude oil per year over the next five-year period with no major changes to equipment or process planned.The Syncrude surface mine, producing a total of 675 000 tonnes of ore and waste per day, rates as one of the largest mines in the world. A strip mining method is utilized, with two or three operating benches necessary to excavate a total depth varying between 60 m and 70 m. The 20 m to 30 m of overburden is removed by electric and hydraulic shovels and 200-ton haul trucks, and dumped in the mined-out pit for final storage. The overburden operation creates a flat bench near the top of the ore zone on which the four 60 m3 draglines operate. The draglines excavate interbanded ore and waste in the highwall, with ore placed on the operating bench in windrows, and waste returned to the mined-out pit. The windrowed ore is reclaimed by four bucketwheel reclaimers, and discharged onto a conveyor system for transfer to the extraction plant."

"Seas and oceans constitute about 70% of the earth’s surface. They contain an enormous stock of various mineral resources such as sedimentary (marine placers), massive sulfide ore deposits, manganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. Sea and ocean floor ore deposits could well contribute to the meeting of ever-rising demand for raw materials in the metal industry. In this regard, more research and development in science and technology appear to be required to ensure maximum benefit from the mineral resources of seas and oceans. Since the 1960s, a variety of mineral and metallurgical processes have been studied and developed to deal with marine ores and to extract metals such as gold, nickel, copper, cobalt, manganese, tin, platinum group metals (PGM), zirconium, thorium, etc.In marine environments, there are many parameters which can affect the selection of the mineral and metallurgical processes. These include the extent and grade of the deposit, mineralogical and chemical properties of the deposit, and physical properties of minerals present with particular reference to particle size distribution and mineral liberation size.In this paper, we briefly review the latest trends in processing and extraction of marine mineral resources. Mineral processing technology is mostly applied for recovery of precious metals i.e. gold and PGM, in particular, from marine placers. In general, pre-treatment (sizing, classification, dewatering), gravity concentration techniques (shaking tables, spirals, jigs, etc.,), flotation, magnetic, and electrostatic separation are the options for enrichment of marine placer ore deposits. In the case of massive sulfides, manganese nodules/cobalt-rich crusts, hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods (as proven technological methods) can be exploited for extraction of metals from concentrates after physical separation or directly from marine ores. The hydrometallurgical treatments involve acid (e.g., sulfurichydrochloric) and alkaline (e.g., ammonia) leaching with different reducing agents and pre-treatments such as roasting. Alternatively, pyrometallurgical treatments involve mostly smelting, chlorination and segregation processes."

"Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

"As part of Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR) expansion, a new Nickel Electrowinning Tank House, with a nameplate capacity of 32 400 tons per annum, was constructed. Commissioning of the new electrowinning technology, which involved world first full deposit plating, commenced in 2011.The old nickel electrowinning process at the RBMR used starter sheets which, along with a divided cell configuration, was very labour intensive and exposed operators to high levels of aerosols that contained both nickel and acid. To overcome this problem two key design intents of the new technology are aerosol abatement and minimising labour in the electrowinning cell environment, with a design target to reduce the nickel occupational exposure limit (OEL) to half the legislated limit of 0.1 mg.m-3.Commissioning of the new technologies adopted to achieve mist abatement is described, together with a review of technical and operational challenges relating to the titanium blank edge strips, blank roughness and sandblasting optimisation, blank quality control, electrode spacing, polyconcrete cell dimensional stability and cell top furniture. The impact of these on process performance is presented and the development of fault checking and rectification methods, to maintain high process performance, is explained.INTRODUCTIONThe expansion of Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery necessitated the construction of a new Nickel Tank House to achieve two primary objectives, namely increasing the nickel electrowinning capacity from 22 500 tons per annum (tpa) to 32 400 tpa nickel, and a design to reduce the nickel aerosols to 0.05 mg.m-3 as a time weighted average over 8 hours, which is half of the legislated occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 0.1 mg.m-3."

In many electronic/optoelectronic devices, interaction between the metal stack and solder is undesirable. If a reaction happens, a nonuniform joint containing spikes and voids is likely to form and as a result the heat dissipation deteriorates significantly, which in turn, leads to the degradation of the bond. In the present work the interaction between Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system, which was sputter deposited on AlN substrates, and Pb-Sn solder was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, an EDX system was used to trace the changes in chemical composition of the layers after solder tests. The microstructural examinations show that the Ti and Mo layer from the Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system are not impermeable enough and thus Ca from the surface of the substrate moves all the way up to the interface of Au/Mo and forms an intermetallic at the interface, which grows over time.

MR. J. R. GORDON: The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent papers on Copper-Nickel Matte Converting. Mr. Drummond's paper contains the results of a thorough and exhaustive study of a series of converter charges. Mr. Gronningsater has presented convincing arguments in favour of his claim that the converter has been neglected as a smelting machine for ore. Some of us may not be inclined to agree with his conclusions. Converting, like most metallurgical operations, is a compromise between an ideal and a practical operation. If it were possible for one to neglect entirely the matter of converter linings, I believe we would all agree that the proper flux for matte in a converter would be pure quartz. Under such ideal conditions, one would, if proper temperature were maintained, make the smallest quantity of slag containing a minimum of magnetite. Converter slags are notorious for their high metal content and must always be subjected to a further cleaning treatment before being discarded. For that reason, the tonnage of converter slag produced should be minimized. If norite is used as a converter flux, then the tonnage of converter slag would be greatly increased if the silica content is maintained at 27 per cent or higher. I cannot agree with Mr. Gronningsater's suggestion that, in con¬sidering a converter flux, the sum of the silica, alumina, alkaline-earths, and alkalis should be considered as being of value. The alkalis and alkaline-earth contents of the flux will replace iron in the silicates formed and tend to increase the viscosity of the slags. However, if the converter is to be used as a smelting machine, it will be necessary to drop the silica content of the converter slag in order to avoid production of excessive slag tonnages.

Tire costs represent one of the highest controllable costs in open-pit mining, accounting for approximately 10% of mining costs. Tire monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years and is emerging as a viable tool for extending tire life and reducing costs. The majority of the major tire manufacturers and several independent companies are in various stages of developing monitoring systems that capture and store vital tire data. Previously this information had only been accessible when the vehicle passed a fixed point in the mine, or when mine personnel manually downloaded the data. Integrating this technology with a mine management system enables remote collection and management of trend and alarm data. Mine personnel can now monitor a tire?s health parameters at any time, anywhere on site, regardless of the vehicle?s location. Anomalous tire conditions can be detected early and corrective actions taken. This information can then be integrated with other major onboard systems, operating conditions, and geographical information. Tire monitoring no longer exists as a stand-alone technology, but has evolved into an important integrated tool for mine operators. This paper will review the current status and benefits of integrating this emerging technology with a real-time mine management system.

"The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."

Large quantities of ferromanganese sludge are generated as waste material by blast furnace during the manufacturing of ferromanganese. These slags are very rich in manganese, zinc and lead (5 to 40 %). These residues have been deposited in a pond in periphery of the steel industry. Considering the market value of the metals, these brownfield sites can now be considered as secondary resources. We have developed a hydrometallurgical process for selectively leaching Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce compounds of Mn and Zn pure enough to be economically recoverable and a residue rich in Pb. Batch laboratory experiments were carried out to determine appropriate leaching conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (90.0 %) with sulfuric acid and to generate a residue containing 15 to 30% of lead. This Pb residue is recyclable by another process.

"The developments of the 1950s and 1960s have seen Canada become an international source of iron ore, trading in all geographical areas and hemispheres. Canada's production will significantly increase in the next decade. However, although the outlook is bright, iron ore producers cannot be complacent. Instead, we must weigh the factors that have brought about the development of the Canadian iron ore industry and examine the probable changes for the next decade that will affect its growth.Looking ahead in the 1970s, competition will be severe. Pressure on prices will continue as new sources of supply bid for long-term contracts and as steel producers continue to develop mines around the world. Rising costs will make these pressures more severe. We must balance the growth of the world's steel makers with the emergence of new supplies of iron ore. The iron ore industry is now part of a new era in which demand and supply are intermeshed, and the developments around the world are acting on the Canadian iron ore industry's future."

"IntroductionThe Hull iron range, comprising the Forsyth, Scott , Baldwin and Lawless properties (Fig. I), is in Gatineau Park, on the outskirt s o f the city of Hull , and about 6 miles (10 kilometres) northwest of the Federal Parliament Buildings.The deposits have been known many years and described numerous times, although the history has been treated lightly in former publications. Total ore shipments have been calculated at 122,700 long tons, of which over 80% were mined before 1900 and 74% in two brief periods: 1870-74 and 1880-82. It is surprising that the period 1870-74 has been overlooked by most authors and 1880-82 ignored altogether. More surprising, the essential data for these two periods are contained in manuscripts of the Robert Bell collection, which must have been available to officers of the Geological Survey o f Canada.The period 1801-1874 ha s already been covered by the writer in ""Pioneer mines”, but much information has come to light since publication. The present paper is therefore based o n new data and a fresh appraisal. However, little additional data were found for the early history (1801-1854) or for the legal cases involving A.H. Baldwin, and these parts were mainly summarized from the relevant sections of the above-mentioned publication.GeologyThe ore deposits are all situated somewhat below the middle of a graphitic, calcitic marble horizon, here folded into a northeast-plunging synform. The Forsyth, Scott and Baldwin deposits are on the south limb of the synform; the Lawless is on the north limb. The marble is underlain by three non-carbonate groups: biotite gneiss with interlayered quartzite (top), granite gneiss and skarn (middle), and biotite-garnet gneiss (bottom). Below these groups is a lower horizon of graphitic, calcitic marble. The whole sequence is Precambrian and has been subjected to high-grade (Grenvillian) metamorphism, but, in the north, is cut by an unmetamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician diabase dyke. "In order to research temperature field for construction of connecting passage in Metro using artificial freezing method, the finite difference software FLAC3D is employed to numerically simulate construction process of connecting passage. During construction, the overall distribution of temperature field around connecting passage, the relationship between soil temperature and freezing time, the distribution and variation for the thickness of freezing wall are studied from the perspective of numerical analysis. The results show as follows: after 55 days’ freezing, the soil temperature surrounding connecting passage is about -24 oC ~ -28 oC, and the minimum thickness of freezing wall is about 4.0m, which is larger than the design value 3.1m. So construction conditions have satisfied to the excavation of connecting passage and pumping station. During the excavation of connecting passage, soil temperature has almost no obvious change and the thickness of freezing wall remains constant mainly. After 45 days’ normal thawing, the temperature of freezing wall rises 12 oC approximately. And the soil temperature rises faster at the beginning of the normal thawing stage. In the whole process of construction, the frozen area is about 5m outside the edge of connecting passage, and the cooling area is about 10m outside the edge of connecting passage. INTRODUCTIONThe first recorded application of the artificial freezing method is on a mineshaft project in 1862, and it has been widely used in foundation pit engineering, subway tunnels, mine shaft engineering and so on (Wang Zhiliang, 2010; Zhang Juanxia, 2012; Qiu Fan, 2007; Zhou Xiaomin, 1999). This method has many advantages of enhancing soil strength; decreasing permeability and adopting various unstable soils (silt clay, sand, gravel, etc.). It has been applied successfully in metro engineering construction in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing. According to incomplete statistics, the construction of connecting passage using artificial freezing method accounted for 98% in Shanghai metro (Qiu Fan, 2007)."

"The Lexington-Lone Star CU-Au deposits straddle the Canada U. S.A. border, south of Greenwood, British Columbia. This 3 km long linear porphyry system occurs in a northeast dipping belt of sheared quartz porphyry and serpentinite. The best grades of mineralization occur in three principal bodies known as the Pit zone, the Northwest zone and the Lexington Main zone. The Pit zone at the Lone Star mine is the largest of the mineralized bodies and consists of fracture fillings and disseminations of pyrite, chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite, hosted by the Lexington quartz porphyry. The Northwest zone, discovered by drilling through overburden near the 49th Parallel, consists of pyrite-chalcopyrite-gold mineralization in the quartz porphyry and the footwall serpentinite. The Lexington Main zone has the highest grade of gold and occurs near the footwall of the quartz porphyry with the mineralogy and setting similar to the Northwest zone. "Cigar Lake high-grade uranium mine in Saskatchewan is operating after 25 years of test mining, construction, and mine flood remediation. Factors include ground stability, groundwater control, radiation exposure, and ore handling. A 10 year test program resulted in validating “jet boring”, a non-entry mining method involving artificially freezing the orebody and surrounding rock; tunnelling to develop access crosscuts below the orebody; installing cased pilot holes through ore; extracting ore using rotating high-pressure water jets within pilot holes; and cavity concrete backfilling. Ore slurry is prepared underground, pumped to surface, and trucked to McClean Lake mill for processing to uranium concentrate.RÉSUMÉ Après 25 années d’essais sur les méthodes minières, de construction et d’assainissement suivant les inondations à la mine, l’exploitation de minerai à haute teneur en uranium Cigar Lake, localisée dans la province de la Saskatchewan, est opérationnelle. Les principales difficultés concernent la stabilité du terrain, le contrôle des eaux souterraines, l’exposition aux rayonnements et la manutention du minerai. Un programme d’essai de 10 ans a abouti à la validation du « forage à érosion », une méthode minière qui consiste à congeler artificiellement le corps minéralisé et les roches environnantes ; à creuser des tunnels pour développer des travers-bancs d’accès en dessous du corps minéralisé ; à installer des puits de fondation pilotes à travers le minerai ; à extraire le minerai à l’aide de jets d’eau à haute pression dans les puits pilotes ; et à remblayer les cavités avec du béton. The operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation, AREVA Resources Canada Inc., Idemitsu Canada Resources Ltd., and TEPCO Resources Inc. Cameco has been the operator of Cigar Lake since January 2002. The discovery hole was drilled in 1981. Commercial production was declared in May 2015 and the Phase 1 operation will have a mine life of 15 years."
