A mineral processing facility near Montreal, CEZinc, Noranda Inc., has recently implemented a leading-edge intranet solution for monitoring the performance of plant operations, and providing condition-based maintenance. This innovative multi-faceted software implementation incorporates: web-delivered plant information systems; area-wide control loop performance assessment (using sophisticated algorithms to evaluate poorly performing controllers); and integrated alarm management functions.The system has enabled a project to improve plant operations through better process control. Maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers all can see the performance of the controllers, and the performance of the plant itself, through webdelivered graphics and reports. Information is combined from many sources, real-time, historical, relational and analytical, to provide a complete picture of plant operation.The web-based solution centralizes the administration of user access, and simplifies the deployment of several different kinds of information to many desktops. It is an extensible system that allows users to create and share their own web pages and data views.The paper will discuss the solution architecture and the improvements the IT, operations, maintenance, and engineering groups have experienced, and overall benefits to the facility.

"This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. "My first reaction to Joanna LaForte’s discussion paper is that she has quite properly assumed that I would like the process of equitable participation between aboriginal landowners and mining companies to be a fast process. On the other hand, I have been a business lawyer long enough to know that the past experiences of the parties will have a significant effect on how they will proceed at any one time.In my article, I was trying to convey the importance of responding to the wishes, aspirations and fears of aboriginal communities in Arctic regions without land settlements. I agree that if it is necessary to wait for governments, the process will be quite slow. My article did point out that often aboriginal communities and mining companies who have become comfort-able that a project is in their mutual interest regard the government(s) involved as their common enemy. I agree that the education and training of aboriginals should “expedite the negotiations and end the power struggles equitably”. Also, I did not mean to suggest that the elders distrust of changes in traditional land use was solely due to concern for alienation and separation from their offspring; however, I suspect it is one reason for their caution. I also agree with this author that establishing opportunities that enable the young aboriginal community members to remain in the north and avoid the problems that await them in southern urban culture should be a common concern of the mineral developer and the Arctic aboriginal community.When this author suggests I am “overly concerned about how much land the aboriginals will control, how educated they may become, how ignorant they are of mining procedures, how objections from aboriginals will escalate expenses, etc.”, she attributes to me as “concerns” matters that were intended to be general information for my readers. My references to the increased land holdings and the improvement in education of aboriginal peoples was intended to deter mining companies from any attempt to be inequitable in their dealings with aboriginal communities."

Vale is in the early stages of commissioning its Onça Puma nickel operations. The project is meant for the production of 58,000 tpa of nickel contained in ferro-nickel, substantially contributing to the company?s vision to achieve world leadership in the nickel business. Mineral resources will be exploited from the homonymous deposits in the Midwest of state of Para, Brazil ? some 100 km southwestwards from the company?s Carajás iron ore properties. Resources as of 83 Mt at 1.73 % Ni will sustain a mine life of approximately 40 years. The property was acquired in late 2005 and Vale has since extended the engineering studies and proceeded with the implementation. Nickel will be mined from saprolitic ore at a rate of approximately 10 Mtpa (ore plus waste) in early years ? ramping up to some 15 Mtpa 7 years later ?, to feed the plant at a rate of 2.5 Mtpa. The process uses conventional RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) pyrometalurgical route whereby the ore is homogenized, calcined in rotary kilns, melted in electric furnaces and further refined to ferro-nickel. The plant has been designed and constructed applying the latest available technology, aligned with Vale?s vison to exceed the highest existing standards for environmental control, health and safety and productivity in the industry. Total investments in these operations are anticipated to correspond to USD 2.3 Bi and will materially contribute to the regional development and well being of the nearby communities and other stakeholders.

"The most cost-effective method of placement of the high strength fill used in the Cannon Mine&apos; s overhand cut-and-f ill bench stopes was determined to be truck haulage. Constraint s imposed by the mine layout dictated the use of a truck which could dump its load in a fifteen-foot high drift. The Dux Teledumper truck was selected as the most suitable unit for this application based upon operational and maintenance parameters which included a telescoping, tilting dump box; large load capacity; and robust construction. Development of the truck continues through the cooperation between the manufacturer and user. INTRODUCTIONThe Cannon Mine is situated in the centre of Washington state, approximately midway between the cities of Spokane on the east and Seattle on the west. The mine complex is located three block s south of the Wenatchee city limits at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountain range.Asam era Minerals (U.S.) Inc., with 5I% ownership, operates the Cannon Mine. Breakwater Resources, Ltd. holds the remaining 49%.Annual paroduction is 520 000 tons per year, presently on a 21-shift per week operating schedule for both the mine and the mill.All production is presently won by overhand bench stoping with backfill. Stoping starts with 15-ft high by 24- or 30-ft wide sill cuts driven above and below a stope block . A drop rai se and slot are used to open a bench which is then slabbed toward the open slot. Truck-placed backfill is dumped into the mined - out stope from the upper sill cut. This stoping sequence is repeated until the top of the ore block is reached . The top sill cut is then tightly filled with backfill to minimize subsidence and to provide adequate roof support during extraction of the pillars.Mining equipment consists of hydraulic drills and rubber-tired, diesel scoops and trucks."

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an emerging environmental management tool for examining environmental impacts from cradle to grave. In this paper, LCA is used to evaluate the acidification potential (AP) and global warming potential (GWP) of belt conveyors and truck haulage systems in a surface gold mine using the ISO 14040 standards. The results show that, for AP, the truck system has 32 kg of equivalent SO2 per functional unit, compared to 8 kg for the conveyor system. However, for GWP, the conveyor has 2,820 kg of equivalent CO2 per functional unit, compared to 648 kg for the truck option.

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

"This paper gives a brief description of the occurrence and development of the Needle Mountain mine at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited and describes the trackless mining equipment used in this highly mechanized underground operation.Maintenance of the trackless equipment is considered in detail, with particular emphasis on scheduling and control, examination and inspection. All maintenance is carried out in an underground garage, and the facilities for maintenance and field repairs are also described. Maintenance costs are given for various units and the figures for different types of loading and haulage units are compared to support the trend toward larger units and the increasing use of rubber-tired loaders."

"The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. In order to minimize front-end rejects, and to allow for high throughput, the ore top size at Aurora has been set at a nominal 125 mm. These relatively large lumps have a significant effect on both pump performance and pipeline pressure gradient. Current design methods underestimate the solids de-rating effect of lumpy slurries in pumps, and do not accurately describe the distribution or magnitude of the lump effect on pipeline pressure gradient. Data from the Aurora hydrotransport systems has been compiled, to quantify the effect of lumps on the pump head ratio and pipeline pressure gradient, and how this effect changes as lump ablation occurs along the length of the pipeline. A model has been built, using a logarithmic curve, which predicts the effect of 125 mm lumps on pipeline pressure gradient as a function of velocity and the distance from the start of a hydrotransport pipeline. This model is applicable only to Aurora hydrotransport operation, but similar models could be developed for other operations using the same methods. Using accurate pipeline pressure gradients and pump head ratios when designing future hydrotransport pipeline systems will help improve their reliability and operability."

Over the past year or so, a number of mining companies have been meeting to examine the role of research in surface mining and, in particular, how to establish a collaborative research effort for the surface mining industry. A review has been completed which has identified the topics that are of interest to the surface mining companies for undertaking collaborative research. This has identified key subject areas such as Operations & Equipment; Maintenance; Environment & Reclamation; and Stability. Specific research projects for the initial research effort have been selected which include Wireless Data Communications, Analysis and Management; Application of GPS in Mining; and Tires for Heavy Haulers. In addition, attention has also been focussed on finding a suitable low cost, but effective, organization to coordinate and manage the collaborative research. The recently formed CONRAD Organization (Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development) appears to be a suitable candidate and discussions are ongoing with that group. This paper provides a summary of the review of surface mining research needs and of the status of the establishment of a collaborative research body for surface mining.

In 1957 and 1958, ten topographically suitable damsites were investigated along the Peace river between Finlay Forks and Hudson Hope, B.C. Of these, three were eliminated after a reconnaissance survey indicated that the geology was unsuitable for the 650-ft.-high dam contemplated. ?After extensive drilling, five other sites were deemed unfeasible because of geological factors and, in 1959, the two remaining sites were designated as being suitable, one for the high dam and the other for a low dam downstream. The sites are located in the Peace River canyon, on the west and the south? side of Portage mountain, west of Hudson Hope. The site for the large dam, the Portage Mountain dam, has since been investigated by surface mapping, thousands of feet of diamond drilling, a seismic survey, laboratory rock tests and on-site grouting tests in order to establish the possible effect on the dam of all facets of the foundation rocks. Three diversion tunnels, 50 ft. in diameter and 2,200 feet in length, have been driven through massive sandstone and shale, and an intake cut, 500 ft. in length, 200 feet in width and 200 feet in depth, has also been excavated in rock.

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. "IntroductionAS COMPARED with coal mines in the United States, and even with some of those in eastern Canada, the coal mines of western Canada, generally speaking, :have made little progress toward mechanization at the working faces. So far as Vancouver island is concerned, there are three main reasons for this : ( 1 ) in some areas, conditions• easy for hand-loading but unsuitable for mechanical loading make high outputs per man •possible by the former method; (2) faulting of the coal seams in ..some areas precludes long-term planning and the introduction and efficient use of expensive equipment; (3) thinness •and other characteristics of the seams in many areas favour hand-loading.No. 8 MINENo. 8 mine of Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir), Limited, is located in the Cumberland sub-area of the Comox coalfield on Vancouver island about 90 miles west-northwest of Vancouver. The geological structure of this coalfield has been described by J. D. McKenzie. The seams occur in the Comox formation, a subdivision of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group. The formation is of near-shore origin and was laid down on an irregular surface of' older rocks. The irregular generally have a northeasterly dip, modified by gentile folds and by a •few large, and a number of smaller, faults.Four seams have been worked in the Cumberland area and all vary in thickness and in the amount and number of interstratified bone and rock •bands."

IN INTRODUCING the subject of rock pressures, it may safely be assumed that mining men are only too familiar with the physical effects of strata stresses that accompany the extraction of minerals. It may be further assumed that they have, as individuals, arrived at certain conclusions regarding their nature, based upon years spent in observing such phenomena and in learning how to continue mining in spite of them. Such hardly won experience forms the core of what is often referred to as &apos;pit sense&apos;. This essential type of knowledge is not ?based on theoretical considerations, nor can it be found in text books. It is highly individualistic in nature and almost impossible to pass on from one generation to another in terms of precise rules for guidance. It is this aspect of individual judgment based on practical experience that has led to the significant phrase The Art of Mining.

A PROGRAMME of structure drilling was commenced in the Southern Alberta Plains in June, 1943, for the purpose of determining the geological structure of the underlying sediments. More than 270 holes have been drilled throughout an area of some 1,800 square miles or 1,000,000 acres (see Figure 1). The Southern Plains of Alberta are covered by a mantle of glacial drift,&apos; at places exceeding 200 feet in thickness. Only where this mantle has been dissected by deep drainage channels is bed-rock exposed to any great extent. Along such channels, surface geological mapping can be conducted to ad- vantage. Accordingly, geological mapping was commenced _in 1942 and continued each season to the present. To supplement this information, a survey of the water wells was carried on in conjunction with the mapping. However, to obtain more positive and evenly distributed structural control throughout the area as a whole and to define more adequately structural trends indicated by the preliminary mapping, it was necessary to resort to the use of drills to penetrate the glacial mantle. Various types of light drills are commonly used for this purpose and provide geological information in the form of drill cuttings, cores, drilling time rates, etc. Correlation of information is generally obtained through comparison of cored sections, drill cuttings, micro-fossils, and drilling time rates. However, in this case the holes were electrologged and correlations were made chiefly by comparison of such logs. The data so obtained is plotted and portrayed in the form of structure contour maps on recognizable stratigraphic horizons and in the form of isopach maps of the recognizable stratigraphic intervals penetrated in the holes. This method had not been widely used in Alberta previously and the technique employed was necessarily developed after the project began.

During the last decade Antofagasta Minerals? Los Pelambres Mine has dramatically increased its ore throughput following the fast initial phase ramp up through a series of planned incremental expansions. The original 85,000 mtpd, two SAG line plant was commissioned in 1999 and rapidly exceeded nameplate tonnage in only a few months. Following this, the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit resulted in throughputs in excess of 114,000 mtpd and a recent, final third line SAG and ball mill addition have taken the plant to over 175,000 mtpd even with increasing ore hardness and changing ore feed characteristics. The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

As a mining social practitioner, social indicators are within the purview of required competencies. A situation, where the ER manager requested assistance in quickly deriving a few social indicators for the strategic plan motivates this paper: despite ample technical knowledge about indicators, a clear understanding of stakeholder aspirations and concerns, as well as familiarity with management priorities such a request required reflection to produce a satisfactory approach, which combined pragmatism with enough academic rigour to provide reliable measures, while being justifiable to management who are unfamiliar with many of the pertinent debates. Importance: Social indicators enable the identification of more and less effective mine-community engagement strategies as well as providing primary data to better understand how the mine-community social system responds to different interventions, thus guiding future engagement plans. In addition social indicators: ? Assist communication about social strategies with Engineering and Operations management, using a quantitative language that is familiar to them. ? Provides concrete data to engage stakeholders to discuss progress and challenges arising, to move discussions towards technically robust strategies and away from politically interested proposals. ? Finally, social measurement is required more and more in due diligence, covenants and ongoing monitoring in Independent Engineering assessments of projects for financing. This paper begins by considering some technical considerations that are useful to guide indicator development. It then introduces the field research informing this paper and discusses some useful results in the light of further applicable concepts from the literature. The paper ends by considering corporate aims in applying corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and discusses the application of the research for practitioners at mining operations, in the light of these aims.
