In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

Many transport tunnels show distress after few decades of construction. Owing to exorbitant cost of replacement, rehabilitation of tunnels has become inevitable and rapidly gaining attention/significance worldwide. This paper discusses the detailed planning and design of remedial measures for repairs and rehabilitation of the twin tube highway tunnel in India, at an elevation of 2200 m constructed approximately 38 years ago. The tunnel length is 2547 m having 30 m2 cross-sectional area of each tube. The tunnel is lined in stretches, totalling 60 per cent lined and the remaining portions are unlined. The tunnel has developed acute problems of rock falls, water leakage, distressed pavement and icicle formation resulting in slow movement of vehicular traffic which has also increased. Suffocation inside the tunnel caused deaths due to inadequate natural ventilation, hence artificial ventilation was deemed necessary and was provided in the restricted 28.5 m2 cross-sectional area of tunnel. The paper would be useful for planners, designers and construction engineers for setting future trends.

What is the best method of splitting a sample from a reverse circulation drill rig? How important is it to obtain a correctly split sample? What is the impact of an incorrectly split sample? These are just a few of many questions asked daily in the mining industry with regard to sampling. Modern sampling theory is well described in the literature in texts and is taught in short courses throughout the world, however little has been published on the relative performance of sample splitting devices used in the field. This paper compares the performance of the Jones tiered riffle splitter with a cone splitter manufactured by SGS Metal Craft in Western Australia. The testwork was carried out at AnglogoldÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. Mineralisation at Sunrise Dam is hosted in a structurally complex framework of shear zones with dips that range from steep (70¦) to shallow (25¦). The deposit is characterised by significant amounts of coarse gold, which presents a challenge in sampling, analysis and grade estimation. The three major areas where sampling errors can occur are in drilling, sampling, sample preparation and analysis. Sampling errors attributable to drilling and sample preparation often far outweigh the errors made at other stages in the process, however historically most effort to identify sampling errors has concentrated on the laboratory and analytical procedures. Splitter design and cleanliness can have a large impact on sample collection and preparation. Splitter performance was tested with respect to sample weights, particle size distribution, and gold grade consistency. The aim was to determine if each particle has an equal probability of being sampled, the resulting sample has integrity, and if any segregation problems occurred. The cone splitter was found to provide the best split in terms of particle size distribution, with no apparent size bias. Duplicate samples had more comparable masses than those provided by the riffle splitter. Most importantly, the cone splitter gave less grade variability between duplicate samples than the riffle splitter. Testwork also confirmed that, like the riffle splitter, the cone splitter must be oriented vertically and the design of the rig or cone splitter trailer should accommodate this requirement.

With the emphasis on CO2 emission legislation and the increasing price of traditional fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, the use of alternative fuels is becoming more and more attractive for the industry, particularly for the cement industry. The variety of materials burnt in the kiln is enormous and varies from tyres, to animal meal and other waste material or by-products that would otherwise end up in an incinerator or landfill facility. This wide variety in materials demands thorough analysis to determine what elements are present in the organic matrix. The elements present may have an influence on the process or the quality of the cement. Toxic or environmental unfriendly elements may be incorporated or dissolved in the clinker phases; whereas volatile components may be present in stack emission to the atmosphere. X-ray analysis is already the key to elemental analysis in cement production, and is used here to determine the composition of these alternative fuels. The XRF spectrometer configuration used in this study is designed to overcome the difficulties associated with the analysis of strongly varying light organic matrices containing heavier elements in minor and trace-level quantities. Heavy element specific excitation conditions and three-dimensional polarised optical geometry increased the signal to background ratio and improved detection limits compared to conventional XRF spectrometers.

Since 1975 two electric hydraulic drills, a Robbins 11ND and an Atlas Copco C0P1038, have been part of the production drilling fleet at Mount Isa Mines Limited's Isa Mine. As might be expected with innovative and technically more complex machines, breakdowns and mainten- ance problems have been greater than those experienced with pneumatic drifters. This has been especially so with the COP1038 but in co-operation with Atlas Copco, many modific- ations have been made to alleviate operating problems. The training and quality of the maintenance workforce is of great importance. The use of coloured pictorial diagrams for hydraulic trouble-shooting will aid in minimising maintenance downtime. Both machines have achieved good operator acceptance. This is the result of many factors, the major ones being the more acceptable environmental conditions, the relatively low amount of physical effort and the high degree of mechanisation. The drilling area is one in which there is great potential for cost savings and product- ivity gains. Because both machines are capable of a high drilling output, Isa Mine is confident of achieving these aims.

The gold treatment plant of Great Western Consolidated N.L. is at Bullfinch, Western Australia, 22 miles north of Southern Cross, which is 100 miles west of Kalgoorlie. A railway to Southern Cross connects the mine with the main Perth-Kalgoorlie line.The plant, which commenced operations on the 31st October, 1952, was, designed by Messrs. Alex: Stewart & Co. in consultation with the technical staff of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. to treat 1,000 long tons a day, made up of approximately equal parts of quarry oxidized ore and underground sulphide ore, by moderately coarse grinding (2-3 per cent plus 65 mesh Tyler) and straight cyanidation without straking. The design had to allow for future treatment of all sulphide ore at the rate of 40,000 tons per 28-day periodand to make provision for the possible later inclusion of preaeration treatment.The test work on .which design was based was done on representative development samples, the mine being divided into zones for this purpose, to check possible local variations from average treatment behaviour. Proposed mill feed mixtures were made up from time to time for complete ore dressing tests, which were conducted in the Western Mining Corporation laboratory at Kalgoorlie.The chief feature of the design was that the plant had to handle the extremes of very soft, poor settling and filtering oxidized ore and very hard, good settling and filtering sulphide ore. On one hand, crushers and mills had to be large enough to handle the sulphide ore and on the other, thickeners and filters had to be large enough to handle the oxidized ores.The design is marked by simplicity, the use of large units of equipment, and flexibility to cope with a variety of ores.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. A practical field method for determining the maximum value of the intrinsic oxidation rate, Smax , of sulfidic materials in waste rock dumps is proposed. Knowledge of the intrinsic oxidation rate of sulfidic materials distributed in a dump is necessary for predictive modelling of oxidation and pollutant generation over time. The suggested method uses the fact that drilling waste rock dumps to install probes for monitoring temperature and oxygen concentration causes large volumes of air to be injected into a dump by the drill rig. By measuring the rate of decrease of oxygen concentration along the length of a borehole immediately after installation, it is proposed that Smax can be calculated at different depths. The aims of this work were: to derive a simple, practical formula for the estimation of Smax from the oxygen concentrations measured over time, based on some simplifying assumptions; to use a two-dimensional numerical model that incorporates all the necessary physical processes to model the behaviour of an aerated dump over time for a reasonable range of dump and material parameters; and to compare the results of the two approaches to assess the validity of the simple formula as a method for estimating Smax. It has been found that the technique can provide reliable estimates of Smax when the value is of the order of 10-7 kg(O2) m-3 s-1 or greater. At the lower end of the range however the radius of the zone aerated during drilling becomes an important parameter and further work has been recommended to investigate this aspect of the method.

This paper describes an ongoing study into the management systems developed by mining operations in Papua New Guinea to address particular public health issues in the workforce (primarily communicable and lifestyle diseases). The first stage of the study involves the analysis of the site health and safety management system documentation of three major mining operations in Papua New Guinea, producing a descriptive summary of each system. In the second stage of the study these summary descriptions are evaluated using a maturity model constructed through a detailed review of literature. Experience with the evaluation process is then used to refine the maturity model. The analysis performed in the study is used to develop a process for creating a maturity model for mine site health risk management based on a theoretical risk management framework, and refining it through empirical evaluations of the actual systems in place on site. Companies can use maturity models as a guide to organisational improvement, which in the context of the study will assist the operations in developing their systems for the management of health both in their workforce and in local communities.

The mineralogy of the crocidolite (blue asbestos) veins at Wittenoom Gorge was examined to determine the cause of failure to recover soma of the fibre by the ore-dressing methods currently being practised. As a, result of this yamina.tion, several fo.Ctors pertinent to the problem were found to be a function of the pa.ragenosis of the veins. The occurrenceof magnetite from tho'cap rock within the veins was thought to be preventing fiborisation during troo.tment. Several petrologic features are described and their relation to the ore genesis is discussed, Comparison with the crocidolite deposits of the Union of South Africa is also considered.

Cyanidation tests by bottle agitation were conducted on an oxidized lead-silver ore containing approximately 12% Pb and 500 g/t Ag. Over 60% of the silver was leached when the ore was ground to 100% passing 0.15mm, whereas 50-60% of the silver was leached when the ore was only ground to 100% passing 0.5mm. Slurry handling and dewatering at the fine grind size were very difficult due to the high clay content of the ore, however this problem was greatly reduced at the coar- ser grind size. The silver recovery at the fine grind size was very dependent on cyanide solution strength with stronger cyanide sol- utions (containing more than 0.1% NaCN) re- sulting in lower solution silver contents. This was thought to be due to the precipi- tation of leached silver by zinc, which was also leached from the ore by the higher cyanide levels. There was a critical zinc level in solution of approximately 1000ppm, above which the silver recovery fell markedly. Cyanide and lime consumptions for this ore were high (typically 5 kg/t and 40 kg/t respectively), hence the processing of this particular ore by cyanide leaching is un- economic at current silver prices.

Offshore minerals legislation has been introduced to provide jurisdiction over the exploration and recovery of mineral resources, particularly petroleum, from the territorial waters and parts of the continental shelves adjacent to coastal states. Ratificat- ion of the 1958 Geneva Conventions on the Law of the Sea has provided some measure of international agreement amongst signatory powers. Because the relationship of the Australian States to the Commonwealth in their federal system, the Australian offshore petroleum legislation is of particular interest. The customary role of the States in mineral resources management, which has extended to the offshore, is under challenge from recent unilateral Commonwealth Government legislative actions in the fields of mineral resources jurisdiction. Environmental considerations provide an additional issue, as yet unresolved, with the delay in submission of the Report of the Great Barrier Reef Petroleum Drilling Royal Commissions

Corporate governance has never been more topical. A glance at any major newspaper or business publication will reveal a litany of corporate failures based upon the governance of the organisations involved (eg Byrne, 2002; Hayes, 2002; The Economist, 2002). The increased compliance requirements and speculative nature of our industry means that corporate governance systems are, if anything, more important than in the general business community (Arthur, 2001). Rather than focus exclusively on the contribution of governance to corporate failure within the mining industry, however, our objective in this paper is to examine how boards can add value to the corporations that they govern. In order to highlight how a board can add value to a company, we commence by outlining the role of the board in the modern corporation in general and the mining industry in particular. We then introduce the concept of shareholder value and identify the steps on which a board needs to focus to enhance shareholder value through value tracking processes. Our discussion pays particular attention to the importance of organisational culture to the companyÆs activities and utilises three case studies from the mining industry. We conclude with an overview of what mining boards can do to enhance their culture and drive performance changes for the benefit of the companies they govern.

Since the commissioning of the BHAS Copper Plant in 1984 the copper electrowinning operations have not fully met expectations. During 1988, a laboratory scale electrowinning unit was constructed to enable an investigation of the effects of process parameters on copper cathode deposition and quality. The process parameters investigated were copper concentration, acid concentration, current density, electrolyte temperature, electrolyte flow, electrolyte impurities and electrolyte additives. The findings of this research program indicate that there is an optimum cathode deposition morphology which results in good quality copper deposits which have improved stripping characteristics. All of the process variables investigated influenced the copper deposition and therefore it was necessary to delineate a suitable operating envelope for the copper electrowinning. As a result new standard operating parameters in electrowinning have been implemented which has enabled the production of higher quality copper cathodes with improved stripping characteristics.

A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northern New Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed : 1) subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2) subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; 3) crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Steps 2 and 3 may be partly contemporaneous. Such a model accounts for the thermobarometric and radiochronologic data, and also for the weakness of substratum deformation during the emplacement of the ophiolitic nappe.

Fluid bed sulphation roasting followed by leaching at low pH was developed as a means of separating copper and bismuth from a mix- ture of flotation concentrates and flash fur- nace flue dust. A 65 tonne/day plant was established and typically achieves 89 percent copper extraction with negligible bismuth and iron extraction. Acid-chloride leaching of bismuth from copper leach residue was then established, with bismuth oxychloride being precipitated from solution by dilution with water. A small scale batch plant presently in operation typic- ally achieves 80 percent recovery of bismuth to bismuth oxychloride.

A bewildering array of process control instrumentation is currently available for mineral processing plants. For sequencing control, special purpose microprocessors or the process control computer can be used. Where continuous control is required, then the choice is between pneumatic controllers, electronic controllers, shared display micro- processor systems and direct digital control. The benefits of each system are discussed and the advantages of using direct digital control in mineral processing plants are outlined. The factors which need to be considered when selecting control systems for new plants are listed. Instrumentation systems designed by Fluor Australia are used as case studies to illustrate the selection process. For established plants, conversion to direct digital can be advantageous, and case studies are given. However, replacement of existing systems requires justification based on a productivity improvement which will allow the control equipment to be paid for within a specific time period. ZC Mines investigated a proposal to replace the present underground train haulage system with rear dump trucks. The number of rear dump trucks required to achieve target output and the required mix of trains and trucks during the changeover was of importance to the designers, and a GPSS computer simulation model of the operation was constructed using GPSS/PC, a recent form of the language for the personal computer. Three models were 'constructed to simulate initial and final configurations of underground haulage systems to transport ore from ore passes to the crusher and then to the skip for transport to the surface. The initial model simulated train operation on two levels and rear dump truck operation on a third level. The second model simulated rear dump truck operation on two levels with ore being loaded through the crusher to the skip as in the previous case. The third model replaced the rear dump trucks on the lower level with a train to establish the relative merits of the two methods of transport. The simulations identified equipment numbers, required operating hours and critical points in the operation which can then be addressed by the mine designers.
