The Mineral Research Centre is located at Perth in the suburb of Waterford, adjacent to Curtin University of Technology and within a Technology Precinct which includes Technology Park. The Centre, constructed by the WA Government at a cost of $16 million and occupied in late-1994, comprises three separate buildings housing the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Curtin University's School of Chemical Engineering and the Mineral Processing Laboratory of the Department of Minerals and Energy. The emphasis on R&D at the Centre is primarily in hydrometallurgy as a result of staff expertise, extensive bench and pilot-scale facilities, track record with the industry and, very importantly, two of the occupiers being partners in the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy. Staff in the Centre have a long involvement with R&D agencies such as AMIRA and MERIWA. The hydrometallurgical focus of the Centre complements that of pyrometallurgy at the GK Williams CRC in Melbourne and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment in Brisbane, to ensure that the mineral processing industry in Australia has access to a complete range of expertise and facilities to serve its needs.

Time-dependent deformation occurs when geo-materials are under an applied load; this may lead to additional deflection of a tunnel structure and the stress redistribution in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolt support system over time. A better understanding of this creep behaviour can improve the reliability of design, construction and maintenance of tunnels. Hence, the present investigation was carried out on the time-dependent properties of rock, shotcrete and the combined tunnel support system. Tunnels constructed in different ground conditions were modelled. The closure changes of the tunnel with time and the redistribution of stress in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolts due to the creep deformation were analysed. Results of the present analysis were compared with the results from the commercial program ABAQUS.

Due to record low tin prices and an uncompetitive position in world markets, the Renison tin mine has undergone three major phases of restructuring in the last three years. This has involved substantial job losses, almost all of which have been through voluntary retrenchments. Retrenchments took place in 1988, 1990 and 1991.The last phase of restructuring was the most dramatic, as many aspects of the operation of the mine were changed. New pay structures were introduced, and the miners' contract system was scrapped. Drastic pay cuts occurred in many areas, although the opportunity was also taken to increase pay at some of the lower levels where inequities existed. Work practices were changed, as was the management structure.

Seven streams of a low tonnage pilot plant operation on Cu/Pb/Zn ore from the Golden Grove Project were continuously assayed using an AMDEL In-Stream Analysis (ISA) system. The ISA instrumentation is briefly described as is the calibration procedure employed. The successful application of this instrumentation in the dynamic environment of a pilot plant operation is discussed. The operational sequence of the Golden Grove pilot plant is outlined along with the original project objectives and how they were achieved by the implementation of ISA. Results for the different complex flowsheets used are discussed, followed by the perceived benefits of installing such equipment in this operation.

DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

The high gas emissions associated with the depth of mining and very high coal extraction at some Australian Collieries have provided a need to investigate the influence of geological and mining conditions on levels of gassiness. The introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex strata control problems and quick changes in gassiness. To this stage of Australian coal mining, no standard method has been developed to predict the different levels of gassiness associated with the various geological and mining conditions; and the relationship between coal output and total methane make has not been established. For local conditions, with a large number of coal seams lying in close proximity to the working seam, the significant contribution of gas emissions from adjacent strata was expected, especially as strata relaxation occurred during longwall mining. This depends mainly on geological conditions, strata control and coal production. For the deepest of the B.H.P. Collieries in the Newcastle region, the relationship between coal output and total methane make has been investigated by systematic gas balance measurement during longwall extraction. The computer method of iteration was used to approximate the mathematical equation from the initial graphs of coal production versus quantity of methane in the ventilation system for various strata conditions. The angle of caving was established for local geological and mining conditions, for planning and design of the positions of cross measure boreholes.

Based on a principle developed at a South African Mine, the CSIR developed a device with which the alignment of guide rails in mine shafts could be measured. Originally the technique could only be used to obtain guide misalignment values at the bunton sets. At the time this was considered adequate since it was assumed that guide realignment could only be done at the support points anyway. The technology was developed further and now it is possible to obtain æcontinuousÆ guide profiles from the measurements. Software was developed with which a guide realignment schedule can be drafted and the shape of the realigned guides can be predicted. A measuring system based on this technology is being used to conduct guide alignment measurements in shafts. The data is then analysed and a realignment schedule is recommended in consultation with the mine. Such a schedule may be prioritised so that the worst sections in the shaft are dealt with first. The measurement hardware and analysis software are described. Examples are presented that illustrate the principles and highlight measurement errors. A case study illustrates measurements recorded in a newly equipped shaft. A repeat measurement, 18 months later, shows the effect of recommended realignment as well as the change in guide alignment over this period.

The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Rock bolt installation is generally carried out in two steps. First the hole is drilled and the drill steel is extracted, then the bolt is inserted into the hole and tightened or grouted. With single pass bolting (SPB), however, these two steps can be carried out at the same time. This kind of bolting system has at least three advantages, (1) the time used for the bolt installation could be reduced, (2) the condition of safety for the operators could be improved, and (3) the degree of automation of the rock bolting practice could be increased. The study presented in this paper is concerned with the development of the SPB system. The current state of the system is discussed, and further improvement of the technique is explored.

In nature, ilmenite (FeTiO3) undergoes weathering through oxidation and removal of Fe to form an apparently continuous series of compositions from ilmenite to pseudorutile (ideally Fe2Ti3O9), and with further weathering, to leucoxene. To determine the mechanism of acid-leaching of ilmenite to ultimately form rutile, we have carried out an experimental study of ilmenite alteration in autoclaves at 150¦C in HCl solutions. Resulting products were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and Raman spectroscopy. In some experiments the solution was initially enriched in 18O and the distribution of the isotope in the alteration products mapped from the peak shift in the Raman spectra. The results indicate that the alteration may proceed in two stages, each with a sharp interface between the parent phase and the product. The alteration begins at the original ilmenite crystal surface and along cracks through which the fluid can migrate. The first alteration product is pseudorutile û no phases intermediate between ilmenite and pseudorutile were detected. The textural relationship between ilmenite and pseudorutile suggests a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism rather than a solid state continuous oxidation and Fe diffusion mechanism. The second stage involves a further dissolution-reprecipitation step to form rutile. Raman spectroscopy shows that the 18O is incorporated in the rutile during the recrystallisation. Throughout the alteration process the original morphology of the ilmenite is preserved although the product is highly porous. The rutile inherits crystallographic information from the parent ilmenite, resulting in a triply-twinned rutile microstructure.

The two major massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of southern NSW, Captains Flat and Woodlawn, differ from classical Kuroko deposits in several ways, e.g. they lie on the flanks of felsic volcanic piles in volcano-sedimentary marine sequences, are relatively thin and large compared to individual Kuroko deposits, show prominent banding in lead-zinc ore, and contain arsenopyrite. Qualified stuctural and stratigraphic correlations of the various fault-bounded remnant Silurian sequences that host these deposits provide the basis for a new interpretation of the regional geological setting that also differs from that of the Kuroko deposits (Ohmoto, Tanimura, Date, Takahashi, 1983), and sheds further light on the distribution of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of NSW.

JUDGING from the attitude of past and present Parliaments in Australia, it is a' reasonable assumption that encouragement of the principal industries has been adopted as a main principle in the government of the country, but while in most cases bonuses, subsidies, and other means have been proved successful and become recognized as established methods in the case of mining, which is undoubtedly one of the most important industries, the question is complicated by difference of conditions and variable quantities, and it can scarcely be said that any system has been proved generally successful. Indeed, it would not be a very extravagant statement to assert that problems connected with affording direct monetary assistance in aid of mining development, and at the same time devising a system adaptable to the varying conditions to be met, are, in every State of the Oommonwealth, matters continually exercising the minds of those concerned in providing and ailocating such assistance ie Parliament on the one hand, and the Department of Mines on the other.True, there are methods in vogue of granting State assistance to the mining industry which have undoubtedly been successful, but it is in most cases questionable whether the beneficial results following successful expenditure in one direction have compensated.

The disagregation and privatisation of the mining and power gene ration operations of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria has being taking place over the past five years. This has transformed the service provision to the new organisations and has resulted in major change to the working lives and professional relationships of thousands of Australians. The authors wish to take this opportunity to explore the issues arising as the program of privatisation of public assets continues. Changes within the workplace which resulted from the outsourcing of the 'investigation and design' functions and more lately as a result of privatisation of the operating, generating and distribution businesses are discussed. The responsibility of managers retaining the services of design engineers has changed. There is an added responsibility of contract administration and an increased focus on intellectual property and strategic issues. The way in which the sectors are adapting is discussed and future directions are explored. We welcome this opportunity to explore the changes in professional life which have taken place over the last five years in the Latrobe Valley Power industry. Engineers and earth scientists have a pivotal role in the continuing successful operation of the three Latrobe Valley Mines of the generation companies. The Mines' collectively excavate annually over 13 million cubic metres of overburden and 48 million tonnes of coal for delivery to mine-mouth power stations and for briquette manufacture.

On the 1 June 1978, the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 was replaced by the revised and more comprehensive Town and Country Planning Act 1977. The new act brings in some substantial changes to the law affecting regional and district planning, and for the first time makes provision for maritime planning. The importance of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 to the Mineral industry is primarily in the relationship between Regional Planning Schemes and District Schemes as the needs and resources identified in a Regional Planning Scheme will override the underlying District Schemes. The mineral extraction industry must be recognised as a regional responsibility which draws on the resources of a region to satisfy the demand of the communities within that region rather than a purely local operation within one District.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. The experiments described in this paper were carried out as a preliminary to a comprehensive study of the factors which affect the behaviour of lead during and subsequent to deformation by rolling and pressing. These observations are therefore to be considered as introductory to a further paper dealing more specifically with the above-mentioned variables.EXPERIMENTALThe rolling was carried out in a small mill with six-inch diameter surface ground rolls, both of which were electrically driven at 15 r.p.m. The average draft per pass approximated 0·03 in. The pressing was performed between platens in the compression unit of a 30-ton Amsler machine. The flat faces used had a ground finish comparable with the surface of the rolls. All hardness measurements were made with a Herbert "dead load" Brinell machine. The following te'sting conditions were maintained: ball diameter-5 mm.; load-10 kgms.; duration of loading-30 seconds; temperature of testing-16 to 18°C. Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fi xed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user: to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems, to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and to conduct a comparative and risk analysis. An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help fi les as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Offi ce 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

This paper describes how water is being planned, managed and used in Queensland as both a precious natural resource, vital for healthy ecosystems, and as a valuable tradeable commodity, necessary to secure economic prosperity. Queensland has been progressively implementing a planned package of water industry improvements agreed by the Council of Australia Governments in 1994. The Water Act 2000 provides the legislative basis for implementing the COAG water reform framework in Queensland and sets out statutory water planning processes. A Water Resource Plan (WRP) is a strategic document that specifies water sharing and environmental flow outcomes across a whole catchment over a period of up to ten years. A Resource Operations Plan (ROP) sets out the details of implementing a WRP, including environmental flow rules, establishment of tradeable water allocations that are separate from land, rules for water trading, rules for operating water infrastructure, arrangements for the release of any unallocated water identified in the WRP, and requirements for monitoring and reporting. Water Resource Planning and Resource Operations Planning are progressing in priority catchments and aquifers across the State. Ways to obtain a water entitlement now depend on whether a WRP and/or a ROP exist in a particular catchment. Water trading provides for the buying and selling of water entitlements on a permanent basis where permitted under a ROP. Details of tradeable water allocations are securely registered on the Water Allocations Register, which is similar to a land titles register. Leasing and temporary transfers of water entitlements are also possible. Water brokers are emerging to facilitate water trading which aims to improve water use efficiency and move water to higher value uses. Queensland is leading the way in the implementation of the COAG water reform framework and the pursuit of sustainable water resource management. The StateÆs progress in this regard is increasing certainty for water users, while ensuring that considerations of equity amongst existing and future users and amongst various uses, as well as considerations of ecological sustainability and the wider community, are all taken into account. The mining sector stands to benefit substantially from these new approaches to planning, managing and using this precious resource.

The northern margin of the Arunta Block is characterized by a metasedimentary and volcanic sequence of lower metamorphic grade than that of the central Arunta Block. Whereas the Harts Ranges have granulite to amphibolite metamor- phic grades, the northern margin only reached greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. Most of the high grade area of the central Arunta Block appears to be unprospective, but the lower grade marginal fringe contains most mineral pros- pects to name a few: Barrow Creek, Molyhill and the Jervois Mine. Numerous smaller prospects occur in this marginal zone. Four major lithostratigraphic units can be recognized in the Jervois Mine area: 1. Gneissic Suite consisting of granitic and rhyolitic gneisses which are characterized by a distinct intersection lineation. 2. Metasedimentary Suite of cordierite- biotite schists and chlorite-biotite schists. 3. Mine Sequence, consisting of spotted schists with andalusite and cordierite, quartz- sericite-feldspar schists with distinct rhyo- litic remnants and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists which contain the lode horizons:
