Mineral froth flotation is used to separate particles of valuable mineral from its associated gangue. It involves the selective separation of the hydrophobic particles from the slurry into the froth. As air is blown into the slurry, the hydrophobic particles attach to the air bubbles, while the waste particles remain in suspension. While the froth rises up, bubbles start to coalesce and burst, allowing the entrained liquid surrounding the bubbles to drain and return part of the gangue to the pulp. Mineral separation is therefore a function of the amount of valuable material loaded on the bubble shells, as well as the amount of gangue material entrained in the liquid channels separating the bubbles (Plateau borders). As a result, the separation performance of the process is affected by mineral attachment and drainage or bursting in the froth. This study aims to establish the relationship between solids loading, froth stability and separation performance. For this purpose, a series of industrial experiments were carried out to measure mineral attachment as well as bubble bursting by combining direct sampling of the bubble films and video image analysis of the froth surface. This work suggests that the solids loading on bubbles strongly affects the separation performance. The results generally showed that solids loading and concentrate grade are closely related, while froth bursting rate can be linked to the drainage of gangue from the Plateau borders and also to the overall recovery of valuable mineral. It was shown in particular that higher loadings, usually associated with higher froth bursting rates, are indicative of more selectivity in attachment and therefore a higher mineral grade in the concentrate. Additionally, this work suggests that bubble solids loading and froth stability are essential parameters to include in froth flotation models as they allow control and optimisation of the flotation performance.

At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. The development of a coal project must pass through a number of phases, taking it from a preliminary evaluation through to detailed mine planning. For each phase the cost of data acquisition and associated mining studies increases exponentially for linear improvement in confidence levels. Within each mine planning phase there are four main activities. These are the economic ordering of reserves, the development of optimum mining strategies, mine design and scheduling and finally the estimation and analysis of costs. The development of the optimum mining strategy is one of the most critical aspects of a mining evaluation and the application of economic criteria at this stage of the project is vital to the successful generation of an optimised mine design. A recommended method is the concept of Economic Ratio (ER) which expresses the likely cost of mining from a given location in a deposit in terms of the value of the product likely to be recovered. The most economic mining strategy will be to mine areas from low economic ratio to high economic ratio within the constraints of reasonable equipment application. When selecting equipment a particular machine should not be selected solely on comparison with other machines in isolation, but the total application must be analysed. In the final selection the decision should be based on whether or not it has a beneficial effect on overall project economics. The economic assessment must take into account the time value of money, so the real cost can be determined with adequate provision for capital and operating costs over different time spans.

The results of pot-furnace tests with 35 bituminous coals from 20 seams in New South Wales and Queensland were used to establish the relationship between coal properties, as determined by standard laboratory tests, and the combustion process. The rate of combustion is influenced chiefly by the expansion of the fuel bed, but this cannot be accurately predicted from the crucible swelling number of the coal.The effects of various other factors, such as calorific value and ash yield, were investigated and statistical analysis of the results shows that the coals could be classified satisfactorily according to two experimentally derived parameters, namely heat-release rate at an air flow rate of 260 lb/sq.ft/hr and air flow rate giving stoichiometric combustion. The grouping obtained is shown to be related to ash yield and swelling number.INTRODUCTIQNThe rate of heat release from the fuel bed of a travelling grate stoker and the efficiency with which the heat is used depend upon the design and method of operation of the furnace as well as upon the properties of the fuel. It is difficult to draw general conclusions concerning the influence of fuel properties from tests on a single stoker installation. In the pot-furnace test, on the other hand, a part of the same combustion process as occurs on a travelling grate is carried out in isolation, uninfluenced by furnace design variables, and consequently the effects of coal properties and of the method of pretreatment can readily be demonstrated.While the combustion pot provides a rapid method of assessing the combustion characteristics of a fuel during the ignition and burn-out stages under standard conditions, and of predicting changes in performance with changes in fuel or in air flow rate, it is unable to simulate certain features of furnace design and operation. Industrial relations on Australian and New Zealand resource projects can be volatile. Therefore investors have become increasingly aware over the years that sound industrial relations during construction is vital to the overall success of their project. There has been a wide range of actual industrial relations performance, project by project, and the degree. of success often directly correlates with the degree and thoroughness of pre-project planning. However, although many projects have been crippled by delays and cost overruns because of labour disputes, good results are achievable. Total commitment to the project by all parties involved is essential and it is up to the employers to seek out this commitment and not just trust mother luck. Industrial relations must be taken very seriously as the price of failure can render a resource project unviable.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

There have been many developments in recent years in pipeline transport to enable them to be more widely used in industry. Substantial tonnages of materials that are not affected by water, such as coal and other minerals, aggregates and wastes, can be moved over considerable distances in quite small diameter pipes. Where there are no existing road or rail facilities, long-distance pipelines are usually cheaper to install, and this advantage increases in difficult terrain. Pipeline operators all over the world assert that hydraulic lines pay for themselves in a relatively short time, in spite of the heavy capital outlay, and this is equally true for lines convey-ing slurries or pastes within a plant complex.'This paper reviews some of the more important investigations in the hydraulic transport field. Although reference to systems carrying a wide range of materials is made, the majority of recent published data centres on coal transport.The paper looks at the application to a wide range of particle sizes, the development of non-aqueous slurrying media and coal/water fuels. The review also looks at some of the equipment being proposed to provide more reliable operation and in particular the range of solids-handling pumps now available.-The paper goes on to identify areas where further research and development is required and some of the many organisations undertaking this work.

The Musselwhite mine, located in northwestern Ontario, Canada, has been an underground narrow-vein gold producer since the spring of 1997. As an exploration project at the feasibility stage, much effort was undertaken to generate a geostatistical resource model that would integrate the orebodyÆs geological features, as well as the controls on mineralisation. Today as an operating mine producing over 200 000 ounces of gold per year, reconciliation studies of the tonnes and grades treated at the mill, with the feasibility model, for longer time periods, and with the grade control models, for shorter time periods, show results that are in good agreement. It was clearly demonstrated with the reconciliation to production, that the key to good reconciliation remains in the proper selection and application of the geological resource estimation method. The application of a grade interpolation technique capable of capturing threedimensionally pertinent geological features, as well as accounting for spatial grade continuity, proved to be successful in the predictability of tonnage and grade at the Musselwhite mine. Along with good mine practices, this approach, which was carried through to the operation, has produced excellent reconciliation results. The ongoing reconciliation studies at Musselwhite allow for a constant revision of the grade estimation strategy. In return, this optimisation process adds value by raising the accuracy level of production expectations. As this is an evolving practice at the mine site, further implementation developments are recommended to integrate these reconciliation procedures on a more regular basis.

Some only types of bank finance are appropriate for mining development, with conventional fixed rate finance having significant limitations of flexibility. New, innovative and flexible instruments have recently been utilised within project financing packages. A strictly limited number of specialist project finance banks exists, with the necessary specialist personnel able to address project cost-competitiveness, cost and commodity forecasting, joint venture negotiations, and completion and sales undertakings. Different techniques of internal bank appraisal are applied, with the usual equity investment project valuation criteria being seldom useful for loan assessment purposes. Company attention paid to the preparation of a sensitively structured bankable presentation can prove most effective for securing development project finance. Substantial scope is possible for savings of time and money.

This paper illustrates that sampling problems and difficulties are as common in an R&D environment as they are in an operating plant. Researchers need to be aware of the potential influence of poor sampling practices and when feasible determine the sampling and analytical precision at the start of any experimentation. Specific problems that have been encountered are discussed and the procedures implemented to overcome these difficulties are described. Examples from projects include the cyanidation of a Au/Ag ore, column leaching of refractory gold and oxide ores, the bioremediation of contaminated sites and the flotation of ore containing native copper.

The term "joint venture" lacks any precise legal definition but is typically used to denote a form of legal relationship which is neither a partnership nor a corporation. Nbst joint ventures are contractual relationships which provide for the sharing of mining leases and production facilities and for the sharing of costs, but which enable each joint venturer to carry on his own separate business. The rationale for such relationships is that each participant: retains independent taxation status may independently grant direct security over his interest in the project assets for financing purposes Bankers prefer to lend to incorporated joint ventures (i.e. corporations in which all of the joint venturers are shareholders) but will lend to individual joint venturers provided the joint venture agreement does not imperil their security; i.e. provided there is a "bankable" joint venture. The carpeting objectives of joint venturers and their bankers may be reconciled and unnecessary conflict avoided by the timely inclusion of appropriate provisions in the joint venture agreement before financing negotiations commence.

The introduction of legal certification of mine managers is a matter of history. It was introduced as part of legislation for mine safety. It has been said that such legislat- ion was written in blood. Like all legislation this legislation is divided into three sections; commands, obligations and sanctions. While legislation in all States on this subject is similar, the differences are great enough to have prompted the preparation of a Uniform Code by the Annual Conference of Chief Inspectors of Mines. This Uniform Code has not been adopted fully by any State to date. Legal certification of mine managers has made managers more aware of the requirements of the legislation covering their industry, legislation that reads as a summary on past accidents and methods of preventing them. While budding managers spend considerable' time in their early years in the preparation for certification, history has shown that the industry has benefited from their efforts. A better knowledge of the safety acts by the managers has produced safer operations, and a higher standard of management has raised the technical standards of mining operations to a stage where Australia can be proud.

Portman Mining Pty Ltd very successfully operated the Ferro GullyNorth Mine in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia to satisfy a contract for the delivery of six million tonnes of iron ore in less than two years to the Mount Newman Mining Co Pty Ltd. The high-grade ore extracted from Ferro Gully North Mine was unusual in that, not only was it within the Joffre Member of the Brockman Formation, but it was rich in red ochreous hematite and martite and very low in phosphorus.

This can be achieved through the use of new technologies, the development of innovative work practices andoptimisation of the mining method to suit the mining environment.Big Bell Mine is a 1.7 Mtpa longitudinal sublevel caving operation at a head grade of 3.14 g/t. Annual production is 170 000 ounces of gold. The selection and implementation of bulk emulsion explosives was seen as the logical progression from blow loaded ANFO for the high tonnage rate required from the longitudinal sublevel cave.Prior to the implementation of bulk emulsions an investigation wasrequired to examine the technical and financial benefits available with the introduction of bulk emulsion. This paper examines the review process and the successful implementation of bulk emulsion explosives at Big Bell.

Most of the copper deposits in the Lachlan Geosyncline fall within areas having either a common host rock, mineral assemblage, form of ore body or time and method of emplace- ment. On this basis a Cobar-type ore has been recognised in the deposits of the Cobar -- Mt. Hope - Melrose region. The copper ores in the Tottenham-Girilambone area to the east have a different mineral assemblage. In the more rugged Central Highlands nearer the coast copper deposits are generally concentrated either in one of several Ordovician andesite belts, particularly between Wellington and Woodstock, or within Silurian acid volcanics developed in irregular fashion over a considerable portion of this region. In only a few instances is copper known in the granite batholiths which adjoin these volcanic belts. Native copper and magnetite are characteristic of the deposits of the andesite province and it is possible that future mineragraphic studies will indicate significant differences in the base metal sulphides of both the andesitic and the more acid volcanic belts. Ores having similar mineralogy and form to the Captain's Flat deposit are known at various localities in the eastern segment of the latter belt. In the Gundagai area several small copper deposits with associated nickel minerals have been developed in the Coolac Serpentinite belt.

In the climate planning of mines and tunnelling with anticipated poor climatic conditions, and especially in case of longer working shifts, the main question is whether it can be reliably prevented that certain climatic limits laid down be exceeded. Working at high temperature and/or humidity can lead to reduced human working energy û a very important economic aspect û and to a risky lack of concentration on the part of the miners or to heat collapse and extremely dangerous heat stroke. With the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT) climate prediction programs, both the dry and the extremely significant humid heat transfer can be calculated. This is due to the high planning reliability involved. With the help of these climate prediction programs it is already possible to determine the anticipated climatic values for the operation phase as early as the planning stage of new ore or coal fields or of tunnel construction projects and to design the optimum air cooling system for every underground project with due regard to technical and economic aspects.
