The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water- jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 1 MPa and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 7 to 40 MPa. At water pressures of 20 MPa and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 % via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20 per cent to 32 per cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

Pintail Systems, Inc, a Colorado USA based company has developed and commercially applied bioremediation processes for biological detoxification of cyanide compounds in mine waste. Site-specific microorganisms are isolated from spent ore, tailings or process solutions and augmented in the laboratory for cyanide oxidation, denitrification and metal biomineralisation. Biological processes typically treat complex contaminants (cyanide compounds, soluble metals and nitrates) in a fraction of the time of conventional remediation processes. Cyanide is used in microbial metabolic processes as a carbon or a nitrogen source. Biological detoxification processes applied at the end of mine life can end long-term liability and perpetual monitoring and containment. Case studies from commercial application and demonstration programs for the US Environmental Protection Agency will be presented in this paper.

The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

The patented "Epytensic" pump of Minnovation Ltd, a multiple piston pump, is used widely on shearer loaders and by partial high pressure watcr jet cutting strategically in relation to cutter picks not only improves cutting rates, but saves power and increases the life of gearboxes and picks, as well as improving dust suppression. The "Face Side Pump", also a piston pump, located on the ranging arm gearhead has advantages over gateroad pumps and shearer body pumps. The "Extraction Drum", hydraulic air mover system, linked with the above innovations and high pressure water, have further advantages in methane and dust removal. Some modifications providing these systems need workshop applications but most are possible underground with minimal changes to shearer profiles and advantages of minimising hosing, along with the other advantages stated.

A large scale distributed process con-trol system has been successfully applied to the automatic control of aluminium reduction cells at Boyne Smelters. A three stage hierarchy of minicomputers and microcomputers is used to continuously monitor and control conditions in each cell and to manage the data generated during the process.The automation hardware was purchased on the basis of low cost, high reliability, prior use in the aluminium industry and a high level of backup under failure conditions. The hardware has met performance criteria to date.The process control strategies have continually been updated to minimise the energy and raw material consumptions in each cell. A major change to systems software has recently been made to decrease the development time for-future changes. Various low energy potline retrofit alterations are currently being investigated requiring significant changes to the process control strategies.

A new plant for grinding limestone was built at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited to meet increasing process demands expected to reach 150 tonne/day of ground limestone. Plant specifications included open- circuit wet grinding, a single ball mill, a feed sizing of minus 6 Tyler mesh, a product sizing of 100 per cent minus 200 and 95 per cent minus 325 Tyler mesh and for the plant to be unmanned during normal running. Main features of plant and equipment are described; grinding performances given, as well as operating experience since commission- ing of the plant in March, 1976.

The correct selection of equipment to use in a mine is a problem which constantly faces the mining engineer. In some cases a wide choice of equipment with different operating characteristics is available. If this equipment is to be used to assist in moving the ore it may be possible to build a computer simulation model to predict how it will perform. Typical problems that lend themselves to this type of analysis are presented. The computer models are constructed using a recent form of the GPSS computer language, namely GPSS/PC for the personal computer. This language allows the programmer to construct models in a very short time and at a low cost. Of great importance is the easy way in which it is possible to change the models to answer any of the "what if?" questions the engineer may pose.

The Hail Creek coking coal deposits are situated in Central Queensland, inland from the port of Mackay. A joint venture of Australian and Japanese companies has been formed to examine the feasibility of developing these deposits for sale on the overseas markets. The project envisaged involves large scale mining operations and on site benefic- iation to wash the coal to marketable quality. Infrastructure items include a 140 kilometre railway to the coast, a port facility, and at Ilail Creek, power and water supplies, roads and communications, and accommodation for a substantial workforce. The need for town development and the responsibility for the development are established. The town planning implications of coal production at the rate of five million long tons of washed coal per annum from open cut and underground mines are considered. A procedure for estimating the size of the town is expounded and the town size is determined. The factors influencing site selection are explained and a site is suggested. A method of designing the town is described and comments are made on developmental aspects. Spaciousness and preservation featuring the natural environment will be the theme of the town development.

Ion exchange resins are an attractive alternative to activated carbon in both column and resin-in-pulp processes for the recovery of gold from cyanide solution. Resins are widely used for this purpose in the Soviet Union apparently in preference to activated carbons.A wide range of resins are available and the high level of resin technology is demon-strated in the resin processes used to recover uranium.The anionic gold complex, Au(CN) 2 , is selectively adsorbed onto weak and strong base resins. However other anionic cyanide complexes, cyanide ions and other anions from the process water are also adsorbed onto resin sites. Resin selectively for gold is not as high as it is for activated carbons. As a result similar gold loading capacities are obtained for resins and carbons when used in plant liquors.

The heavy sulfide zone (HSZ) of the Grasberg deposit has the geometry of a funnel and is located at the contact of the mineralised intrusive and the relatively barren sedimentary rock types. The geometry and the rock properties associated with the HSZ plays a significant role in pushback design and sequencing. Most of the HSZ has relatively low strengths which must be considered in slope design and management. This paper presents the open pit mine geotechnical and planning design considerations associated with the HSZ.

Anglo Platinum is the worldÆs largest producer of platinum group metals, and also produces large quantities of nickel, copper and cobalt at its Refining complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. In 1995 Anglo Platinum embarked on a smelter modernisation project, primarily to reduce site emissions to below the guideline limit of 20 tonnes per day SO2, but also to increase the converting capacity in line with future projected production profiles. To achieve these requirements the existing Pierce Smith converters were replaced with a single large Ausmelt converter and a new acid plant. This was the first time that an Ausmelt furnace had been used for converting, but it had the advantages of being a very robust furnace and was fully enclosed, giving good gas capture. It was thus considered the most appropriate technology from both a process and an environmental perspective. It also enabled the smelting and converting furnaces to be decoupled. The plant was commissioned from late 2001 and the first tap was in June 2002. Despite being a new technology, ramp-up has been similar to other large scale pyrometallurgical operations. Numerous process improvements have been made since start-up, most notably a change from two-stage batch to fully continuous, resulting in the plant now operating above design in terms of throughput. Optimisation of freeboard accretion control was also a major component of the ramp-up activity. This paper discusses the commissioning and ramp-up issues of the new Ausmelt converting furnace, concentrating on the design and process changes, and summarises current operating performance against the original design objectives.

An important problem in open pit mine planning is that of detennining the optimum ultimate pit limits of the mine. These limits are that contour which is the result of extracting the volume of material which provides the total maximum profit while satisfying certain practical operational requirements such as safe wall slopes. The determination of the optimum pit contour provides information that is essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of the mineral deposit. A number of optimisation techniques are available for determining this contour with the Lerchs-Grossman and the Network Flow methods being the most favoured. Unfortunately, direct application of these techniques to large ore-bodies may cause considerable difficulties because of the computational time and storage requirements. In this paper, we present a strategy for resolving these problems, and the associated pit design software PITOPTIM (incorporating a fast network flow technique) and a data reducer, BOUND. The results presented highlight the speed and power of the software package rivalling the popular Lerchs-Grossman technique. An application of the software for a sensitivity analysis is also presented and discussed.

There are significant Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenges facing a mining company operating in the global arena. This paper specifically examines the Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenge facing BHP Billiton. The changing regulatory environment creates a significant challenge for global mining companies when reporting Mineral Resources and Reserves. The development and implementation of internal policies and standards for collecting and collating resource and reserve information is required for corporate governance, however the challenge is then to report this information publicly in such a way as to comply with the various codes and requirements in the many jurisdictions in which the company is required to report. The move to an International Code is not only desirable but is an essential requirement in todayÆs global market. The agreement to report using a single code internationally is however only the first step. A truly practical international reporting system must have common definitions and guidelines for interpretation as well as an international approach to the definition of a Competent Person, and even more importantly a common acceptance of that code by the relevant investment regulatory bodies. Without the universal acceptance of the concept of an international reporting code by the major regulatory bodies, implementation of such a code will be limited. With the major global mining companies seeking to raise capital in the USA, the worldÆs largest capital market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its approach to reserve reporting is becoming increasingly important. The development and implementation of an International Code must gain the support and acceptance of the SEC if it is to be successful.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

The process of establishing the design criteria is the key step in commencing a new project.. The method for establishing design criteria and translating them to a workable plant design is described. INTRODUCTION The use of activated charcoal to recover gold from alkaline cyanide leach liquors is the most rapidly expanding technology in hydrometallurgy today. The process, known as carbon-in-pulp (CIP), has replaced countercurrent decantation as the method for recovering gold by cyanidation. Carbon-in-pulp entails mixing activated charcoal with a ground ore-water slurry containing gold cyanide, allowing the charcoal to adsorb the gold, and then mechanically removing the gold loaded charcoal from the pulp. The pulp is sent to tailing disposal and the loaded charcoal is sent for gold bullion production. Activated charcoal's affinity for gold has been docu- mented for over one hundred years. Copper-gold ores have been technically difficult and uneconomical to process due to high consumptions of cyanide. Many copper oxide and sulphide minerals react with cyanide to form copper cyanide complexes, partly contributing to the high level of weak-acid dissociable cyanide in the tailings which is normally experienced during the processing of copper-gold ores. The cost for detoxification, if required for treating these tailings, would further inhibit the development of these copper-gold resources unless the cyanide used for leaching was recovered. Several technologies have been proposed to process copper-gold ores, aiming to recover copper as a co-product and cyanide for recycling in conjunction with the leaching process. A critical review of these processes reveals that a pre-concentration stage (solvent extraction or resin ion exchange) is required. Cyanide is recovered by the conventional Acidification-Volatilisation-Regeneration technique in most cases. A critical evaluation is also provided on technical aspects related to the use of Vitrokele Technology and a newly developed Elutech process in processing copper-gold ores, in particular with its application at May Day Mine.

The application of conventional dust control systems in British Coal mines has considerably reduced the incidence of pneumoconiosis. A number of new techniques have been developed involving extraction close to the cutting heads of mining machines which will be capable of controlling airborne dust with the greater intensity of production necessary in the present economic climate.
