The mined-out Old Waite volcanogenic Cu-Zn deposit lies in the Noranda mining district of northwestern Quebec. The deposit has a distinctive pipe-like zone of alteration beneath the massive ore, extending into the stratigraphic footwall. The hydrothermal metasomatism within the alteration pipe produced a concentric zonation. with a peripheral quartz - sericite - chlorite mineral assemblage surrounding an axial core of magnesian chlorite - Phlogopite.

Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. The AuPlus" Systems have been applied in the gold mining industry to achieve improved gold recoveries, faster leach kinetics and reduced cyanide consumptions. A simplified, three-dimensional, time-dependent, mechanistic model of the overburden-coal seam-floor interaction has been developed and validated at two Illinois coal mines. The model based on the thin plate theory can involve any complex layout of mine workings, time-dependent sequence of extraction and, rheological properties of immediate floor strata. The model output data consist of spatially distributed surface subsidence and its slope and curvature, as well as load acting on pillars in one or more panels. A comparison of calculated and monitored surface subsidence or in- mine convergence measurements has proven the model's effectiveness for surface subsidence and load transfer Prediction.

Western Australian tin deposits are similar to those of other Precam- brian terrains in that they are mainly associated with rare-metal pegmatites, in which cassiterite is found with minerals containing any or all of the elements Ta, Nb, Be, Li, Cs, Rb and the rare earths.. They differ from Phanerozoic deposits where cassiterite occurs in quartz veins, greisens, dis- seminations in granite or sulphide lodes, and is associated with minerals containing W, Mo, Bi, Sb, As, Ag, or Cu. The main tin production in Western Australia has come from the Pilbara Block where the more important tin- bearing pegmatites are related to a younger granite phase, and from Green- bushes where large albite pegmatites intrude ?Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The more important tin deposits in the Pilbara Block, and those in the Halls Creek and Murchison Provinces, are related to granites which are richer in Si and K and poorer in Ca, Mg, Fe and Ti than 'average granite'. The tin granites tend to have higher than average contents of Sn, Rb and Li.

It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

Accounts of their activities are hazy and debatable. A broad brush account is all that I can hope to accomplish under these circumstances. Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. It is quite well known, although not so well documented, that radio noise is generated during rock fracture. Radio noise has also been observed during severe earthquakes. The source has been thought to be the fracturing of the rock, although the mechanism has never been unequivocably proven. A study of these radio emissions may provide insight into rock dynamics prior to seismic events, and after blasting. A programme of electric-field recordings has been undertaken at Brisbane quarries during multi-hole blasting. Preliminary analysis has shown that three types of signal may be distinguished. They are hole detonation, rock fall and post blast relaxation signals. It is thought that information about the blast, and the fracture of the rock, may be ascertained from these Signals.

The Broken Hill (BH) Block contains a wide variety of mineralization, with comrodities including Pb, Ag, Zn, W, Cu, Co and Sn. Much of the mineralization is stratigraphically controlled. Fe, Cu and Co-rich mineralization is dcminant in the Thackaringa Group; Pb, Ag, Zn and W is dcminant in the BH Group and Sn mineralization is present above the BH Group. Some mineralization occurs as concordant syngenetic deposits, but other types have been partly or completely remobilized by metamorphism, magmatic activity or hydrothermal fluids. Almost all of the non-syngenetic mineralization, including stratabound, vein and intrusive-related types, has formed from the "recycling" (remobilization and redeposition) of metals originally deposited with the sediments and volcanics of the Willyama Supergroup.

Ore mineralization in Masara consists mainly of gold-silver veins, porphyry copper and pyrometasomatic deposits related to left-lateral movements along the Philip- pine fault system and a later stage of magmatism. These are hosted by pre-Tertiary volcanic flows and volcaniclastics, and comprise a temporal pattern of earlier peripheral copper zone, an intermediate mixed copper-gold area and a later central gold vein system within the Masara sector of the postulated volcanic field. Gold ore emplacement occurred in at least two stages, and shows gradations from a lower mesothermal-epithermal phase passing into a typical epithermal zone, and finally into a truncated, or poorly developed, upper level thermal spring deposit. Orebodies are closely associated with hot springs, solfatara and several magma- related masses, emphasizing their inherent linkage with a geothermal system in the Area.

The late 1960's and 1970's saw the initial development of the coal resources of the Bowen Basin of Queensland. The projects developed relied on large scale, open-cut operations using draglines for overburden removal and, in the majority of cases, project viability could be established based solely on those open-cut operations. Many of the mines developed in the 1980's have the same characteristics.Unlike these mines, the German Creek Mine has limited open-cut reserves at low overburden to coal ratios, and planning of the complex involved a large open-cut mine capable of developing early cash flow, with phased introduction of underground mining to replace open-cut capacity as the strip ratio increased.

Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. There is no good news! The market environment for raising capital for resource projects is getting tougher. The regulatory and accounting environment is fast becoming more difficult and the hurdles to successfully raising debt, lease, equity or hybrid finance are now considerably higher. As ever, well structured companies and capital issues can and will survive, if not thrive. An outline of the market and regulatory environment for successful issues is set out below, followed by some comparison of stockmarket values of resource assets compared to more technical appraisals.
