The gold deposits of Kalgoorlie are the most important on the Precambrian shield of Australia. Gold was first discovered.'-:.V. ,,.,.-,..Kalgoorlie in June, 1893, and olthough`the original find was of ;:...;;small extent, the prospecting activity which stemmed from it 'led to'the ciscovery.of the lodes of the Golden Mile, some three miles to the south. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is the focus of a world-class effort in providing technical solutions to the minerals industry. The 85 FTE staff are drawn from the CentreÆs five joint venture research partners comprising universities (Curtin, Murdoch and Qld) and government research agencies (CSIRO and WA Dept of Industry and Resources). There are also 12 industry partners, representing most of the leading mining companies in the world. Around 45 postgraduate students, mainly PhDs, make a significant contribution to the research effort. Total annual expenditure on R&D is around $17 million.Hydrometallurgy activities encompass both fundamental and applied research across the alumina, gold and base metal sectors. The Centre is now growing its client base into overseas markets, particularly North America, South Africa and Europe. Quality, strategic R&D by the Parker Centre is seen by the industry as an attractive investment. A recent survey of the industry revealed an estimated ten-fold return based on direct costs of research to the client. In addition, the Parker Centre has a strong commitment to education of postgraduate students wishing to enter the mining industry as well as providing specialist courses for those technical professionals already employed in the industry. The wide range of employment opportunities in the mining industry is reflected in the diversity of the disciplines amongst the CentreÆs research team, eg extractive metallurgy, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, engineering, molecular modelling, microscopy, geology and computational fluid dynamics. How does an atomic force microscope and molecular modelling improve our ability to control gypsum scaling or understand crystallisation of alumina in a Bayer plant? Can a biologist contribute to the problem of the slow leaching of copper from chalcopyrite? Why are computational fluid dynamics and lasers the basis of understanding how to make thickeners work more efficiently. Can you combine a PhD or Honours degree with industry experience? What is crud and why is nickel stressed? These are typical examples of the CentreÆs research activities and demonstrate the contributions of its multi-disciplinary teams which keep the Australian mining industry at the cutting edge of advanced global technology.

Perilya Broken Hill, from its inception, has budgeted for more than 2.0 million tonnes per year from the Southern Operations. This tonnage was planned to come from in excess of 100 stopes per year in a remnant mining environment with numerous mined voids and consequent mining challenges. To mine an average of two stopes per week requires patience, flexibility and detailed knowledge to best manage the potential risks and hazards. The evolution of the Perilya Broken Hill Mine Planning Process has necessitated the establishment of a process to identify and manage these risks during the planning stage in a reliable but efficient manner. This process is to ensure that vital steps for each stope are not missed, and that each personÆs work can be tracked by other members of the team. This paper outlines the planning process from resource to stope closure.

In presenting size analysis data, one has the choice of various graphical techniques; each no doubt has been developed to highlight a particular aspect of the data. A frequency size distribution plot is used quite extensively to illustrate the importance of the finer size particles in iron ore granulation. However, the basis for such a plot is often not appreciated. As a result, cases of incorrect use can be cited. The aim of this paper is to extend the work of Alien (1981) and to provide, using examples and figures, a basic understanding of the implications of the various size distributions. A simplified method of presenting sizing data on a linear scale graph paper is presented and recommended. This involves a simple construction of a histogram of mass fraction versus particle size (in geometric progression).

An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the various gas flow characteristics of bituminous coal samples. Adsorption and desorption tests were first conducted to estimate the quantity of methane that is retained by coal, and the rate at which it is released. Experiments were then carried out to study the variation in coal permeability with changes in applied stress and gas pressure - factors that change continuously with time. To further understand the phenomena involved in retention, release, and flow of gas, electron microscopy was used to study the microstructure of coal and how it affects these characteristics of coal.

Through the use of structural analysis programs such as Unwedge and considering the shear strength of applied fibrecrete it can be shown that fibrecrete can provide a higher factor of safety in a ætypicalÆ underground development excavation than standard rock bolts. This paper describes the progression of ground support from an æas requiredÆ component of mining to the use of bolts and surface support as a mandatory requirement. With the mandatory requirement for surface support, fibrecrete has been considered and applied as a secondary feature but simple analysis and practical observations indicate that it may be considered as primary support. The key elements to its implementation are: When is it safe to work under fresh fibrecrete and how do we practically determine this? How much ground support does fibrecrete provide? How can we reduce the cost of fibrecrete? An examination of these questions indicates fibrecrete can be much safer,less expensive and quicker to install than normal ground support elements. This paper explores practical examples from sites where significant benefits have been achieved by mine operators.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. Production in 2012 year to date is well on the way to annual production rate exceeding 1 Mt/a.CITATION:Rauert, N S, 2012. This paper will outline the design process, and the constmction and rehabilitation techniques proposed for the external waste dumps associated with the mining of the Wolfang Basin coal measures.The basin is located to the north of Clermont and immediately west of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia. Development of the Clermont Coal Mine is planned for the mid-1990s after adequate sales commitments are obtained to allow the project to proceed.

Numerical modelling is extensively used in civil and mining engineering applications because of cost and risk problems associated with different experimental studies. In this study, the effect of resin thickness was evaluated in bolt-grout-concrete interaction and bending behaviour of a fully grouted bolt installed across joints in post failure region. Tests were conducted in 20 and 40 MPa concretes, and modelling simulations were made, using ANSYS version 8.1, to include both with and without different pretension loads. It was found that in all resin thickness, both the strength of the concrete and bolt pretension had major influences on the shear resistance and shear displacement of the reinforced medium. Also it was found that the strength of the surrounding concrete is more important than that of the grout thickness in both the shear resistance and shear displacement when the bolt is pretensioned.

Dense medium cyclone theory, supported by extensive experimental and plant-scale evidence, demonstrates that medium rheology (stability and viscosity) substantially affects cyclone performance in mineral applications.Two instruments have therefore been developed to allow medium stability and viscosity to be-monitored in the plant environment. The Ebor Volcano in northeastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19-20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2-19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (-48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at -19.0-19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichment of SiO2, F,FeO/MgO, alkalies and HFSE.

The tankhouse of the electrolytic zinc plant at Nordenham is operating with a very high operating efficiency of 99 per cent. This has been achieved not only by strict control of the quality of the zinc sulphate cell feed solution but also by all the improvements in housekeeping in the tankhouse developed during the past years: aluminium cathode specification, cathode stripping cycle, edge strips, copper contacts, anode isolators, cell cleaning, fittings and washing devices. During 1987 to 1992 the casting department was completely remodelled in order to improve the quality of the zinc products, the safety of the operations and the flexibility. The remodelling includes the enlargement of the area for the casting shop, the storage buildings and the five casting lines on the same ground level. New lines for alloying products and for SHG25 kg zinc ingots have been constructed. The line for galvanising products has new equipment in some parts and the other lines have been modified.

Silver-lead mineralization at Indooroopilly, Queensland, extends upwards from Upper Triassic rhyolite which intrudes phyllite-containing Palaeozoic mineralization.Sulphides and magma were emplaced in a special structural site which underwent dilational fracturing while surrounding rocks were block-faulted and compressed. This site lies at tbe intersection of dykes, faults, and a lineament adjacent to a Middle Triassic granitic stock.Structural controls at Indooroopilly are attributed to the effects of piston faulting. Exploration for similarly controlled deposits should be directed towards structural intersections near stocks or batholiths which have intruded mineralized belts. Priority should be given to structural intersections which were sites of block-faulting and igneous activity under compressional tectonic conditions.Favourable sites lacking surface mineralization may contain ore at depth as piston faulting produces 'blind' ore deposits.

The Emperor vein system lies on the eastern margin of the Tavua volcanic structure. This is of Miocene age and occurs in basalts(the Mba Volcanics) probably underlain at about 2 km by calcite-rich sediments (the Vatukoro Formation). The lodes are generally flatmakes, or steep fault fillings, or complex shatter zones, and consist of quartz and altered wall rock. In areas of open cavities it is possible to establish a paragenesis which involves five quartz stages and two ore mineral stages. The first ore stage contains calaverite, krennerite, sylvanite and native tellurium, the second petzite, hessite and native gold. The quartz stages are thought to have formed slowly (102 years) from boiling solutions of low salinity at temperatures varying with time from about 250¦C to 190¦C. The system was sealed, the temperature gradient near vertical and the mass flux small. The ore mineral stages probably formed relatively rapidly (101years) from boiling solutions at 250¦ to 200¦C when the system was mainly open. Gold deposition was probably largely a result of fall in aH2S due to boiling, the calculated solution concentration falling from a maximum of about 8 ppb at 250¦C to about 8.10-3ppb at 200¦C. Boiling is also probably responsible for an increase in a02 (by loss of H2) and fall in aTe2 (by loss of H2Te). The fluids are thought to have had a large component of meteoric water and to have been heated by plutons in the core of the volcanic structure. Stable isotope data indicate that they derived their carbon from the underlying Vatukoro Formation and their sulphur from sediments. Circulation may have been confined to the outside of the volcanic structure because of the relatively low permeability of the flows, pyroclastics and dykes within it.

Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.
