When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. The primary object of this paper is to describe the present metallurgical practice of the Emperor Combined Mill, wherein ores from the adjoining and Associated Mining Companies, Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and Dolphin Mines, Ltd., are treated for the recovery of gold and silver.The mining field is located in the foothills, five miles from the sea, on the northern side of Viti Levu, the largest and most important island of the Fiji group.The orebodies occur in basalt and associated ash beds overlain by andesite, tuffs and sediments. The basalt is a dark greenish-black rock and in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of the olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, of the augite to chlorite and of the minute included crystals of iron ore to other iron oxides. Into the basalt intrudes a considerable number of andesite dykes, and the lodes occur as veins in these dykes, as "flatmakes" along fissures or, ash beds extending horizontally from the dykes and at the contact of the basalt and the andesite dices.The Emperor orebody is the largest and most important, and consists essentially of massive, shattered, well altered and mineralized basalt.Little or no free gold occurs in the ore at present being milled, the most important host minerals for gold being the tellurides sylvanite and hessite, next in importance being the sulphides, pyrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. Chalcopyrite is present in quantities large enough to be troublesome in the subsequent concentrate treatment section, while sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena and native tellurium are present in small quantities.Unimportant occurrences of native copper have been observed in both Dolphin and Emperor orebodies.

An experimental induration facility has been developed and used for conducting iso- thermal tests and plant simulation studies on the thermal induration of iron ore pellets. The influence of time, temperature, lime content, ore type, shale content and particle-size dis- tribution (e.g. Blaine Index) is being studied in a continuing programme. The present paper deals with experiments relating to the first three of these parameters and illustrates the use of an experimental design suitable for statistical analysis. The relations between isothermal data and the results of complete simulation rests are discussed.

The authors have used the geotechnical study for design of the South Wall of Mt. Newman Mining's Mt. Whaleback Mine to illustrate how geotechnical studies can be economically justified. This is achieved by relating the savings resulting from increased ore recovery and prevention of failure to the cost of the study. An outline of the geotechnical study is provided in the paper, including a brief description of the innovative methods used to investigate geological structure of the mine and descriptions of the methods of slope reinforcement adopted.

The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. The Eagle on the Hill tunnels form part of an upgrade of Mt Barker Road, 15 km to the southeast of Adelaide. The upgrade significantly improves safety and reduces delays on this major road, which winds steeply through mountainous terrain. The twin tunnels each spanning 15 metres run in parallel for a length of 480 metres. The tunnels are excavated in slightly weathered high strength slates and very high strength quartzites of the Saddleworth Formation on the western margin of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Steeply dipping slate cleavages and the high fracture ratio result in many slope stability problems in the project area. The level of geotechnical investigation undertaken prior to the calling of tenders for the project was extensive. This included the excavation of a pilot tunnel along one of the tunnel alignments, which allowed accurate mapping and rating of the rock, resulting in an increased level of confidence during the tender process. One of the features of the winning alternative tender design was the use of canopy tubes, flexible steel ribs and shotcrete to replace up to 40 metres of deep portal cuts in unstable rock with driven tunnels. Slope stability issues were overcome with the use of rock dowels and shotcrete. The support concept allowed the safe driving of the tunnel portals with as little as two metres of overburden. The design incorporated lining drainage and criteria for fireproofing based on European experience to ensure the ability of the tunnels to remain stable in the case of a severe fire incident. The support design allowed for maximum flexibility with a range of support types able to deal with the varying ground conditions. Design development and support refinement continued throughout the tunnel construction phase with close liaison between the designer and the constructor. Monitoring and review of feedback from the construction site by the Sydney based design team was easily achieved by means of electronic transfer of photographic and survey information, telephone and fax communication and regular site visits. The contractor for this project is Macmahon Concrete Constructions Joint Venture (MCCJV) and the designer is Connell Wagner. Excavation commenced in January 1998 with tunnel breakthrough having been achieved in early-August 1998 and mid-September 1998 respectively. Concrete lining construction is scheduled for completion in April 1999.

It is the aim of this paper to review recent research in understanding the role of cyanide in the elution of gold. Under conditions of severe pre-treatment (high temperatures and levels of cyanide), the dynamics of elution are determined mainly by the adsorption equilibrium and the flow conditions in the column. When conditions are less favourable for desorption, transport phenomena are rate controlling. The most important sub-processes of elution are the changes in cyanide, potassium and gold concentrations, as well as the change in passivation of the carbon surface. Mathematical models to simulate the various sub-processes are described briefly.The presence of an irreversibly adsorbed species such as AuCN on the carbon is determined mainly by the pH, temperature and the type of carbon. Cyanide in the pre-treatment step will convert the AuCN to reversibly adsorbed Au(CN)2. Competition between cyanide and Au(CN)z for adsorption sites will enhance the elution of gold, but plays a minor role at elevated temperatures. The most important effect of cyanide is its reaction with the functional groups on the carbon to passivate the surface for the adsorption of anionic metal cyanides and thereby promote the elution of gold. This passivation, caused by the degradation of cyanide, is strongly temperature dependent. Free cyanide in the elution step of an AARL elution is of lesser importance than the cyanide in the pre-treatment step. Elution without cyanide is possible only after cold acid washing, and has been proven on plant scale.

Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

The Lower Palaeozoic Woolomin Association is composed of chert and jasper (often radiolarian), siliceous argillite, the mafic volcanics with associated hyaloclastites, and occasional greywacke and limestone lenses. Several "Cyprus-type", conformable pyritic copper (+/- zinc and cobalt} sulphide lenses are spatially related to individual mafic volcanic units and manganiferous chert and/or jasper. The Association has been interpreted to represent an oceanic crustal remnant generated either in an island arc environment (Herbert, 1981) or at a divergent plate boundary (Scheibner and Glen, 1972; Leitch, 1974a, 1975) later to be obducted, or tectonically emplaced, into continental crust; the adjacent Peel Fault was considered to be the palaeo-obduction zone (Scheibner and Glen, 1972) and the associated alpine-type mafic/ultramafic complex, an ophiolite (Crook and Felton,1975).

The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

The debate on the mechanism of adsorption of gold and silver di-cyanide onto activated carbon could be divided into two schools of thought. On the one hand, it has been proposed that the combined effects of electrostatic and chemical interaction between the activated carbon surface and adsorbing gold di-cyanide anion results in the adsorption of the latter. On the other hand the `ion-pair' adsorption reaction mechanism has been vigorously advocated as the dominant mechanism responsible for the adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon. It is maintained that gold is adsorbed onto the carbon surface as the neutral ion-pair [M"+][Au(CN)z ]". Adsorption is viewed as the result of mainly the chemical interaction while electrostatic interactions are neglected. The validity of the `ion-pair' adsorption mechanism may be challenged on a number of counts. However, the alternative mechanism (based on aqueous surface chemistry principles) has not gained general acceptance yet, because it has not been applied widely enough to explain the different adsorption phenomena associated with gold di-cyanide on activated carbon. In the present study the case in favour of an adsorption mechanism based on general aqueous surface chemistry principles is presented. A model framework is developed for the adsorption reaction mechanism of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon which incorporates the effects of chemical and electrostatic interactions between the dissolved species, the aqueous solution and the carbon surface. This model is then employed to explain a wide variety of reported adsorption phenomena for gold di-cyanide on activated carbon, such as the effects of pH, the adsorption of different metal cyano complexes, ionic strength, and type and concentration of cations in solution. In addition the effects of cyanide and dissolved oxygen concentration were investigated. No ready explanation, in terms of aqueous surface chemistry principles, is yet available for the switch in adsorption behaviour that agrees with ion exchange to ion-pair adsorption with increasing ionic strength.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill both in MICAF sills and in recovery of major horizontal pillars in the 650 copper orebody, where, during mining, cemented fill has regularly been exposed on unsupported vertical faces up to 90 ft high. In the paper the main considerations are the role and specifications of the fill used but also included is a brief description of fill preparation and placement.Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and testing campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed, and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. The data collected showed that the fill station can operate within tolerances set on product quality, that laboratory and field strength results are comparable, and that rapidly obtained fillsample properties such as moisture content and void ratio can be related to cement content and strength, and hence used for quality control.Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented involving Portland cemented hydraulic fill and alternative, cheaper additives for cementing hydraulic fill. The most significant alternative to Portland cement is quenched and ground copper reverberatory furnace slag, whIch behaves as a pozzolan, reacting strongly with any available lime to produce cementitious hydrated calcium silicates and allowing Portland cement reductions of at least 50 per cent without strength loss.

One of the major impacts of using modern mechanised systems of mining is the production of large amounts of extraneous dirt intermixed with the Run of Mine output. The paper out- lines a proposed system of utilizing liquid tailings from coal mines to replace imported cementitious materials used in ground control and various other safety measures. A geotech- nical and cost assessment of the proposed system are also included. The paper concludes that it is possible to utilize processed tailings to cost effectively replace imported packing material for ground control.

This paper describes an integrated approach to the evaluation of ore loss and ore dilution via geostatistical simulation of in situ geology and grade characteristics, simulation of blasting mechanisms and simulation of loading from a blast muck pile. The approach is demonstrated on a case study. The sequential Gaussian method is used to simulate in situ bench grades on the scale of the smallest selectable volume within a blast muck pile. The simulated grades of these component volumes are interpreted as the reality that would be available with exhaustive sampling. The simulated bench is subjected to a blast simulator, based on the SCRAMBLE model, which effectively moves each of the component model volumes to its final resting place in the blast muck pile. Ore/waste delineation and selective loading processes are applied to the simulated muck pile to determine the degree of selectivity that can be achieved by various sizes of loader and types of loading and to quantify ore dilution and ore loss. An in situ model representing the reality of knowing only the data and information that are available from specific grade control drilling and sampling grids is obtained by sampling the geostatistically simulated model on a specified grid. The volumes comprising the in situ model are then populated by estimates based only on the data and from the specified grade control drilling and sampling grids. Different drilling and sampling grids are used to generate different models, each reflecting the levels of data and information available. Selectivity is assessed as a function of the drilling and sampling grids as well as the size and type of loader. Performance is assessed against the ideal selectivity that could be achieved on the perfect knowledge model comprising the simulated values of each component volume. Costs, prices and financial criteria enable an optimal selection of the grade control drilling grid, size of loader, type of loading and blast design.
