The process selection and design aspects to treat primary ore in a new carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plant while utilizing, where possible, existing equipment and infra- structure are discussed. The existing crushing plant, water supply, reagents, laboratory and infrastructure facilities from the heap leach have been upgraded and expanded to meet the C.I.P. plant requirements. The new power supply is from the North Queensland grid system. A series of metallurgical tests was carried out and a review of the data showed that the primary ore was amenable to conventional cyanide leaching. Following feasibility studies, a new process plant which included grinding mills, leaching, and adsorption tanks, thickener, desorption and gold roam facilities was constructed.

The possible use of combined (flotation/magnetic separation and magnetic separation/flotation) technologies involving the new flotation reagent systems for upgrading the iron ore concentrates, low grade manganese products and beneficiation of graphite-bearing dusts from integrated iron-and-steel works has been shown. It has been found that the absence of magnetic flocculation phenomenon worsens the reverse cationic flotation of oxidised iron ore concentrates and direct flotation of low-grade manganese products which require the use of modifiers possessing the flocculating properties. the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.

Australia's first offshsore well was spudded in on 27th December 1964 and resulted in the discovery of the Barracouta gas field. Further exploratory drilling led to the discovery of the Marlin gas field in December 1965, the Kingfish oil field in April 1967 and the Hblibut oil field in June. 1967. In September 1968, a small oil reservoir was found in a sand below the main Barracouta'gas reservoir. The Snapper gas field was discovered in May, 1968 Information on exploration activities associated with the discovery of oil and gas in the Bass Strait area may be found in the paper, "Exploration in the Gippsland, Bass and Otway Basins, Australia" by B. M. Hopkins. _ Development of the commercial fields is being undertaken on an equal participation basis by Hematite Petroleum Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Ltd. is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the production facilities.

The state-owned Swedish company LKAB is one of the world's largest producers of iron ore. LKAB mines the greater part of its ore underground, and very high efficiency is vital if it is to compete successfully with open pit mines. Consequently, computers and OR are essential parts of the company's operations. Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

The Kelian Gold mine project won two excellence awards from the Victorian Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. It was a challenging project, fast tracked in a remote and inhospitable tropical environment. The creation of a profitable and efficient mine was a significant engineering and project management achievement. The difficulties encountered and the way they were managed provide valuable lessons. These include the importance of sufficiently detailed engineering in all aspects of the job to enable the best estimates possible to be prepared during feasibility studies, the need to prepare the project scope and execution plan with disciplined and rigorous attention to detail by a highly experienced team and the value of identifying, assessing and mitigating risk and uncertainty during execution. The practical benefits of applying these lessons were demonstrated in the successful management of technical uncertainty on the recent diversion of the Kelian River to allow the expansion of the Kelian mine.

Precious metals in the Rosebery north-end orebody occur predominantly in sphalerite- galena-pyrite ore and to a lesser extent in massive barite mineralisation. Gold may also occur in the upper parts of pyrite-chalcopyrite ore (although this ore type is usually gold poor), in pyritic mineralisation lateral to base metal sulphide lenses and in the footwall (very patchy). Although present, remobilised precious metals do not occur in economically significant quantities. Mineralogically, silver occurs dominantly in tetrahedrite and, to a lesser extent, argen- tiferous galena. Gold occurs as electrum associated dominantly with pyrite and, to a lesser extent, tetrahedrite. Geochemical modelling suggests that silver was probably transported as a chlorocomplex, while gold was transported dominantly as a thiocomplex, although at high temperature gold was transported as a chlorocomplex.

In the last 40 years nuclear energy has taken its place as a major source of electricity worldwide. It now produces 17 per cent of the world's electricity and could conceivably produce a higher proportion, to displace some six billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Concerns about global warming and environmental quality now underline the virtues of nuclear electricity among alternative sources of energy. Global electricity demand is rapidly increasing as a proportion of total energy usage. The proportion has doubled since 1960 and the demand is expected to increase at least 75 per cent between now and 2020. The source of this extra capacity, and the replacement of present capacity, raise questions with major resource and environmental implications. Today nuclear energy is a mature technology. Over 1200 nuclear reactors have been built and operated, some of these have been decommissioned, and among the 440 reactors in commercial operation the first advanced reactors are now entering service. Some 8000 reactor-years of operation have, with the sole exception of Chernobyl, shown nuclear energy to be extremely safe and reliable. High-level wastes are being managed properly and in different parts of the world two strategies are applied to this. Australia has a major role as a long-term supplier of uranium, since it holds almost 30 per cent of the world's reserves. This, along with an impending sellers' market for uranium, is making it an opportune time to develop new mines here. However, after several decades of concern about civil nuclear energy contributing to the arms race, we now have uranium liberated from nuclear weapons stockpiles being diluted for use in civil reactors, which will supplement ex-mine supply. The public acceptability of nuclear energy remains the critical factor in its future and hence in ours.

The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and*pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anortho- site layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spinel-bearing meta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the Goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, Ni, etc. liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

In Morwell Open Cut brown coal mine, the overburden 'firehole' materials which have resulted from ancient coal fires vary-from hard baked clays to firm laminated lacustrine clays. The need to pre-strip designated areas to reduce the slope height and attain safe digging conditions for the bucket wheel excavator operation is now accepted practice at the open cut mine. In this study, the inherent spatial variability of undrained shear strength of the clay materials has been incorporated in a visco plastic, finite element based, probabilistic slope stability analysis. Data on the costs of initial pre-stripping, excavation and slope failure are collected to provide an economic basis for the optimisation of the design of the overburden batters in Morwell Open Cut. This improved stability modelling is enabling costly pre-stripping to be minimised while ensuring acceptable slope stability conditions and minimising the risk to personnel and plant.

The great advances made in the application of solvent extraction to the recovery of copper from low grade ore sources over the past 15 to 20 years are well known. Solvent extraction is an essential step in the recovery and purification of copper from dilute sulphate leach solutions by which some one million tonnes of copper are now electrowon annually. A reagent is also available for the selective recovery of copper from chloride leach solutions and this may hold the key to the processing of complex sulphide ore concentrates. By comparison, the use of solvent extraction in the recovery and processing of zinc has as yet found little favour and is confined to only a few specific and comparatively small applications. This is despite the ready availability of a large number of low grade zinc sources and zinc-bearing wastes and residues. It is suggested that this difference is due in large part to the absence of suitable reagents having the particular features required to enable them to fit into a solvent extraction - electrowinning based process for zinc. Ideally, for the recovery of zinc from dilute sulphate solution, an extractant should operate on a proton exchange principle and be strong for zinc in the same way that o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents are strong towards copper. It should load efficiently with zinc at the pH of typical sulphate feed streams without the need for neutralisation and yet be stripped efficiently by spent zinc electrolyte. Another factor of major importance for many applications, however, is that it should be highly selective for zinc over ferric iron. These features have now been realised in a development extractant DS5846, which is a formulation of a novel class of reagent currently under investigation by Zeneca Specialties. The properties of this reagent are described with respect to selectivity, isotherms and how they compare with phosphoric and thiophosphoric acids that have been previously proposed for the extraction of zinc. For the recovery of zinc from concentrated chloride solutions a solvating or neutral donor type of extractant is required which again should ideally have high selectivity for zinc over a number of other metals, particularly iron. The new reagent Acorga ZNX50 is based on a formulation of a novel class of compound developed specifically for this purpose. It gives efficient extraction of zinc from feed solutions that are four to six molar in chloride ion but is readily stripped at 60 - 65¦C using either water, dilute brine, or spent zinc chloride electrolyte. The reagent is highly selective for zinc over iron and a range of other metals including cadmium, arsenic, lead and magnesium.

This paper highlights the importance of accurate observational technical reports compiled by Mining Geologists and Engineers. Before uncovering the original reports in July 1992, all previous investigations discounted returning to old mining areas on the belief that all operations were suspended because they were 'unpayable'. However, the detail of the original reports removed any doubt of the economic value of retrieving remnant ore.The important feature was that the description of 'unpayable' by GMA could be equated to 11.6 - 35 g/t over the history of the mine. On the basis of these reports the Morning Star mine has been re-opened.

The Olympic Dam Mine is a large, mechanised, underground operation currently producing 2.2 million tonnes-per-year of copper/uranium/gold ore. The mine is accessed via one shaft and one service decline. An additional 13 raise bored ventilation shafts have been completed to-date.Ventilation requirements are stringent in order to provide adequate dilution and removal of diesel fumes, radon gas/daughters and heat generated from both engines and wall rock.Due to the nature of the orebodies, the mine workings will continue to expand laterally necessitating the addition of at least one major surface raise every year.

An investigation into the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces has been completed by the Subsidence Engineering Section of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Minerals and Energy. Changes in strata bulk permeability were also measured by standard packer tests undertaken before and after mining. The strata movement was measured by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were collected to suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors did not move significantly until the face went past the borehole. For subcritical extraction geometry with the extraction width to mining depth ratio of 124, the caving zone extended to roughly 9 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam roof. Tensile strains within the overburden tended to be much more closely related to stratigraphy than to the proximity to the extracted seam roof. Larger tensile strains were associated with layers of sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate, whereas layers of mudstones, claystones and coal underwent much smaller strains indicating subsidence in blocks. A beller correlation was observed between pre-mining Rock Quality Designation and permeability than between rock type and permeability. This correlation was less evident in the post-mining core logs. There was an overall increase in bulk permeability after mining.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. The large rotary blast hole drills for hole sizes of 250 to 375 mm in diameter have been utilized by large open pit metal and coal mines for production drilling all over the world. The design of such rotary drills is in most cases about two decades old and it has not been done much in order to apply a modern technology on rotary drilling. The most modern large rotary drill, Tamrock RI 10, consists of an advantageous rotary head with a squirrel cage AC motor controlled by a frequency converter, a beneficial mast structure with a possibility for inclined drilling, hydraulic driven, independent crawlers, and a modern ergonomic cabin to provide a comfortable working condition for the oper- ator. Several automatic features are available as options. The rig has been designed to be operated by one man only. With this modern rig the produc- tion rate can be increased and production cost kept on a low level.

Digital computers, by virtue of their capacity for high speed repetitive calculation at low cost, are finding increasing application to routine calcula- tions in the mining industry. In this paper techniques are shown whereby the use of computers can be extended to more complex tasks. The regular calculation of grades and tonnages of material to be extracted from specified areas of an operating open pit is a necessary part of production planning. In this paper it is shown how these calculations can be carried out by computer. thereby freeing planning staff from manual calculation. An operating open-pit mine can be described in terms of drill logs, geological ore boundaries and pit perimeters at various levels. These form the data base which must be suitable for frequent updating to incorporate new information. A suite of computer programmes is described which operates on this data base to calculate tonnages and grades of ore within extensions to the perimeters as indicated to the system by planning staff. Possible future extensions are discussed.

The recovery of molybdenum at Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) has become increasingly important as its demand and price have risen dramatically in the last few years. Consequently, the flotation behaviour of the molybdenum bearing mineral, molybdenite, has received a significant amount of attention. The flotation performance of molybdenite generally lags that of the copper sulfide minerals and is much more variable. There are many factors including particle size, liberation, surface slimes and oxidation that contribute to this and also much speculation as to the relative contribution of each of these factors. This paper discusses the morphology of the molybdenite found at KUC, the mineral associations in the different lithogical ores types and the effect that each of these has on flotation performance. Quantitative mineralogical analysis and an assessment of particle shapes are used to explain that flotation behaviour does not necessarily follow expected trends and that some behaviour is counter-intuitive. This unique behaviour can be explained by the morphology and anisotropic nature of molybdenite.
