The first mining in Western Australia probably commenced some 40 000 years ago when Aborigines arrived and began quarrying stone for tools and weapons, and ochre for decoration. The earliest documented mining by European settlers took place in 1850 on a small lead vein in the bed of the Murchison River, reported by the explorer A C Gregory. However, it was the discovery of gold in the Kimberley region in 1885 that first drew wider attention to the State's mineral potential.

Evaluation of reserves on a production scale within a shear-hosted gold deposit is complicated by the nature of the mineralisation itself. The 'payable' ground seems to be confined to areas with intense shearing, while the remainder of the deposit is characterised by 'background' mineralisation at a very low level.

The Huolinhe surface mine is a very large-scale surface coal mine, located in the north-east area of China with a production rate of 1.2 Mtpa. Its coal haulage system has a large capacity, long transportation line and high degree of automation. The system comprises two crushing plants, many belt conveyors, four surge bunkers, one loading bunker, one coal storage and five end product bunkers. In this paper, the network patterns of semi-continuous systems in surface mines are studied, the reliability calculation methods and a simulation model are established and the software for computing the reliability of a semi-continuous system is worked out. By considering the whole coal haulage system in the Huolinhe surface mine, the authors developed the system reliability-numerical simulation method. The steps and the computing results of this method are described in detail. Through the calculation, we can master the present situation of system reliability and the main factors impairing system reliability, expose the system weak links, put forward the ways of enhancing system reliability and furnish the basis for improving the system and equipment. The way of increasing capacity and methods of enhancing system reliability are further raised.

The concept of precise, accurate timing with Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was first seriously addressed in the mid-1980s and much was made of the cheapness and profusion of digital watches in terms of the likelihood of EDDs also being cheap and easy to produce. Ten years later, with every major explosives company and many electronics groups having instituted projects to capitalise on the promise of these devices, production devices are still to come into general use. In South Africa, Expert Explosives units have been used in most applications during proving trials and more recently for production blasting in underground ring stoping and open cast coal. The outcome has been valuable learning both as to the benefits and technical requirements for electronic delay blasting, and especially, safety aspects. Examples are shown of production blasts which utilised the power of EDDs. It is evident that it is not delay accuracy alone which determines the value of these systems, but the whole robustness, flexibility and ease of delay allocation when harnessing blast engineering knowledge. Muckpile movement and shape, fragmentation and vibration frequencies have shown to be greatly influenced by designs which can be implemented no other way. The flexibility of a system and the power of the software controlling it are crucial in capitalising on blasting potential, which lies in integrating control of blast timing with other developing electronic Technologies.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. Stability control plays a prominent part in the planning and execution of coal winning in the deep open cuts in the Latrobe Valley operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Different stability mechanisms affect the individual overburden and coal faces. These are the classical rotational slip in overburden and the three-dimensional tetra- hedral wedge or planar block slip in the coal faces. The stability of the overall batters is affected by the so-called "block sliding" mechanism, which is unique in Australian open cuts. The basal stability of the open cuts is affected by pressure from water in confined aquifers underlying the coal being excavated. This paper describes each of these mechanisms and the current monitoring and con- trol techniques practised by the SECV.

The Northern Mariana archipelago in the W.Pacific forms a classic intra-oceanic island arc system far from the influences of continental crust. As such it offers an ideal location in which to study many of the problems of subduction-related volcanism. Radiogenic (Sr, Pb, Nd and Hf) and stable (0, S and H) isotope systems have been applied to the question of the possible involvement of components from the subducting slab in arc magmagenesis. The results contrast with earlier studies based upon limited sample suites and suggest that fluids, derived from the slab and enriched in mobile elements, substantially modify the composition of the mantle wedge and contribute to the characteristic geochemistry of arc magmas. Trace element data, including the occurrence of negative Ce-anomalies in the lavas seem consistent with this conclusion. Major and trace element variations within the arc lavas can be modelled in terms of crystal fractionation of a gabbroic mineral assemblage and mixing calculations indicate that this has the approximate composition of PLAG:CPX:MAG:OLIV = 60:25:10:5. This observation is compatible with the widespread occurrence of gabbroic nodules in lavas throughout the arc. Consideration of Rare Earth Element and phenocryst data leads to the conclusion that many of the more basic lavas may be the products of cumulus enrichment. The results of this study constitute a model for magmatic processes occurring in simple island arc systems, and may be generally applicable to other, more complex settings. The recognition of a return flux of material with 'continental' affinity to the mantle, via sediments on the subducting slab, also places strong constraints on geochemical models of crust-mantle evolution.

Continued extraction of the No. 3 Seam at Elouera Colliery required the driveage of a sequence of roadways within an area of significantly elevated horizontal stress. Initial roof conditions varied from excellent to very severe as the panel entered the high stress area. The variation was attributed to the extraction sequence, with different roadways "leading" the panel into the high horizontal stressfield.This paper summarises field and analytical work designed to evaluate the use of stress control methods as an effective planning tool. The "leading" roadway of the panel would be required to remain stable whilst experiencing moderate to severe deformation whilst the neighbouring roadways (stress relieved) could be driven at more acceptable advance rates using less reinforcement.The planning implications of developing the panel with stress control methods are discussed.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

Over the longer term, the adoption of new technology is an essential component in the endless tasks of reducing mining costs, improving safety and improving environmental standards. However the choice of which of the many available new technologies to adopt and which not to adopt is not easy and the price of mistakes can be very high. The most important issue for mine developers faced with making such choices is knowing whether or not a new technology has been developed to the stage where the timing is right for its adoption. A system for categorising new mining technologies is provided. It provides a basis for more easily reaching common understandings about various new technologies and the background information supplied provides an understanding of what it takes to get new technologies to the proven stage and the risks of never getting there. Wherever possible, new full-scale mine developments should not rely on unproven technologies. Approaches to handling situations where a proposed new mine development is not feasible on the basis of proven technologies are also provided. If any commitment to the use of unproven technologies is made, a guarantee of high quality development support from the supplier of that technology is essential. Several case studies of successful and unsuccessful new technology development programs at BHP are Provided.

The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

In this paper, the author briefly introduces the resource characteristics of Chinese iron ore, as well as the present increasing market demand for iron concentrate. The SHP-3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) is used to separate complicated weak-magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-3200 HIMS, including modifying the angle of magnetic polar from 90¦ to 83¦, cooling the exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing equipment to wash off magnetic particles and adjusting the tooth-space of the matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm to enhance the recovery of fine particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In order to improve the recovery of difficult-separated iron, the film-magnetic separation technique is applied into the HIMS and a new LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically. A flowing-film feeder is also added and the feed mouth is modified to make a slurry flow formed in the form of film along the wall of matrix. The microstructure and dissemination character of the mineral particles is studied, and the specific susceptibility of the primary minerals is measured. Then the distributive characteristics of a magnetic field for the separator with film-magnetic technique and the motion of particles in the process of separation are all analysed. By introducing the film-magnetic separation technique to SHP-Φ700 HIMS, the recovery of iron can be raised from 69.45 per cent to 76.07 - 78.96 per cent with the similar grade of concentrates of iron. Such an increase of 9.51 per cent in the recovery also shows that it is feasible for such film-magnetic separation technique to be applied into HIMS.

An understanding of the importance of the different components that comprise a rock bolt unit is necessary to ensure the proper use of rock bolts as a means of roof support. The various anchors, bolts and plates in use in Australia have been designed and adapted for Australian con- ditions. As mining conditions change, so will the types of bolts in use. This is apparent in the development of chemical anchors and other recent innovations.

In the process of mining the lower seam in a multi-seam operation, a lot of oblique fract- ures appeared in the upper seam which was in the equilibrium zone. These fractures closed soon after the lower face line passed. Despite the occurrance of some degree of undulations, and and step-like unevenness, the upper seam was subsequently extracted without difficulty. When attempting multi-seam extraction, from the height of the equilibrium zone, the minimum distance between seams in ascending mining should be predicted. By analysing roof con- vergences data and the geometrical configuration of subsidence profile, it was found that the minimum safe distance for ascending multi-seam mining depends on the mining height of the lower seam and the properties and structure of the inter-stratified rocks.

Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs. A statistically-designed experimental program has been used to study compositional and processing variables which influence the development of strength and reducibility of iron ore pellets. The effects of chemical composition and processing variables were investigated by indurating laboratory-made green pellets, of known composition, under approximately isothermal conditions in a pot- grate simulator. Some findings from a six- variable study are summarized in the form of contour diagrams and emphasize the importance of interactions between the variables. Production of strong, highly reducible pellets is possible over a considerable range of combinations of temperature and firing time. Abrasion index (AI) and cold compression strength (CCS) improve as both these variables increase, but reducibility (R) declines, so a compromise is required. When the lime level is too low to form enough slag for bonding, the AI and CCS may be inadequate. Larger additions of lime tend to improve AI and CCS, with only slight effects on R. At any given time, the tidal force subjects massive regions to a spatially uniform load. The deformation of any large structure due to these forces is proportional to the elastic properties of the structure. In this aspect, the tidal force applies a load in a manner similar to that of a large-scale testing machine. Any anomalies in the measured tidal response must reflect alterations in the average elastic response of the massive structure. In the present work, tidal tilt measurements obtained in the wall of a large dam are used to infer changes in the response of the dam to applied loads. In particular, it is found that the dam response has changed by approximately 13 percent, on average, for two monitoring periods separated by 5 years. It is possible that these changes were produced by the different volumes of water in the dam for the monitoring periods. The tidal measurement technique can also be applied to monitor changes In the average structural response of large underground and surface masses relevant to coal and metal mines.

The assessment of the face velocity of blasts is important in the analysis and subsequent improvement of blast performance. POWERWAVE RADAR is a new tool which will make the collection of this data easier for blast researchers. The data collection technique ensures that a large amount of face velocity data is collected from a blast, and describes the velocity characteristics of the face at a new level of detail. This results in a greater understanding of the effect of drilling and blasting parameters on blast performance. Several case studies are presented which illustrate the collection technique, the type of data generated and how the data is used.

Segregation studies in ternary systems of glass ballotini, iron ore and coke particles (with size range of 1-8 mm in each) in filling and emptying a laboratory size Paul Wurth hopper are described. In-bin segregation is shown to be a function of the position in the hopper, the nature of the material and the feed composition. The in-bin results are correlated by the equation C = C0k, where C and C0 are the size compositions (wt per cent) in the hopper and feed respectively, and k is an experimentally obtained segregation constant. The results of now pallern measurements show that material discharges from the hopper according to the sequence; core now - wall now - scaffold now, where the latter represents stagnant material at the hopper wall that discharges last. Size segregation in the discharge stream from the hopper is shown to be a function of in-bin segregation and hopper now pallern. A method of predicting discharge segregation from these two sets of data is suggested. The results of the model studies are also compared with industrial data and these show satisfactory agreement. Discussion of the hitherto ignored effect of size segregation on hopper now rates, stoppages and other operating problems is also included.
