Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of producing similar fragmentation with different designs (involving different powder factors and costs associated) increases with the variability of the implementation.CITATION:Parra, H and Zenteno, D, 2015. High-water rapid-solidifying material, called æhigh-water materialÆ, is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of backfill body, environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

The Porgera gold mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, produced 7.7 Moz of gold between 1990 and 1998. Reserves are estimated to be 12 Moz of Au. The deposit is associated with 6 Ma-old mafic alkalic intrusions emplaced at shallow levels into unconsolidated Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments, where they caused the formation of peperites. The mineralisation consists of an earlier base-metal-sulphide-rich stage with sericite-carbonate alteration (stage I), and a later phase represented by quartz-roscoelite veins (stage II). New styles of mineralisation and alteration have been recognised at depth in association with stage I. They consist of the assemblages magnetite-chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite and biotite-actinolite-anhydrite respectively. In addition, the recent recognition of adularia in some stage II veins (with roscoelite) confirms the similarity of this style of mineralisation with other adularia-sericite or low-sulphidation epithermal deposits.

The Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) for the simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead was developed at Avonmouth from the 1930's with activity intensifying in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Present operations are based around the No.4 furnace which was built in 1967. Development during the 1980's has been driven by the need to sustain operations at low metals prices and has been aimed at reducing manning whilst increasing output. Although hit by several major plant disruptions, progress has been steady, culminating in a ú10 million capital programme in 1988?89 to upgrade the operation. The most important technical developments, reflecting the needs of the 1990's have, in the sintering area, included improvements to feed conditioning and sinter quality, a 20% uprate in production capacity by debottlenecking, and pilot work leading to the installation of a Boliden-Norzink mercury removal plant. In the smelting area the ISP furnace has been rebuilt, with a redesigned bottom section to eliminate earlier operating sensitivities, and to achieve higher blowing capability, and at the zinc refinery the columns have been rearranged for more flexible operation and higher capacity.

Mount Leyshon is an open cut-heap leaching operation that commenced production in early 1987. Open pit reserves are 6.3 m.t. grading 1.8 g/t Au and 4.8 g/t Ag and expected annual production is 68,000 oz. of gold. Gold mineralisation is hosted in breccias, porphyry plugs and basement rocks interpreted as the roots of a multi-phase Permian phreatomagmatic breccia complex. Mineralisation has the form of veins, cavity fillings and disseminations and is localised by late stage trachytic dikes and sills and dike-like bodies of milled breccia in the northwest corner of the complex. The sequence of mineralisation includes: I quartz-chalcopyrite-molybdenite stockwork veins and pyrite-gold veins with potassic alteration II quartz-chlorite-carbonate-basemetal sulphide-gold veins and cavity fillings with sericitic alteration III quartz-basemetal sulphide-bismuth-sulphide -electrum veins, veinlets and dissemin- ations with sericitic alteration. Mineralisation is interpreted to have formed at 500-300¦C from a predominantly magmatic hydrothermal system related to the porphyry intrusive bodies. Mount Leyshon is a phreatomagmatic breccia with a very different origin to the Kidston magmatic hydrothermal breccia. However the mineralisation style and origin is quite similar.

Expansion of the B.H.P. Co. Ltd. mater ials handling facilities, at their Newcastle Steelworks, began in 1964 and continued until 1970. The present complex handles the annual iron ore requirement of some three million tons for the Sinter Plant and Blast Furnaces. Iron ore is discharged from ore carriers and conveyed at rates up to 3,000 t.p.h. to either of two 180,000 ton capacity storage yards, where it is blended using boom stackers. Material is reclaimed from these yards at rates up to 1,000 t.p.h. using a slewing boom bucket-wheel reclaimer and fed to a screening station. Oversize material is scalped out and crushed in a closed circuit cone crusher. Undersize material is sized on double-deck vibratory screens which separate at 1/4in (6mm). The two fractions are blended in two of four 70,000 ton capacity blending yards using slewing boom travelling stackers. Bridge-mounted bucket-wheel reclaimers reclaim the blended piles at 1,000 t.p.h. Fine ore is conveyed to the Sinter Plant and lump ore to a second screening station, for rescreening, before passing to the Blast Furnace.

The Ok Tedi Project has been planned as a selective mining operation since the Feasibility Study. The nature of the orebody, and the need to 'stage' the infrastructure buildup meant that initially the mill would process gol ore using a leach-CIP process, followed by parallel leaching of gold ore and flotation of copper ore, and finally all flotation of copper ore. Cutoff grades were applied to gold and copper ore of 1.0-1.3 g/t Au and 0.4-0.3% Tot. Cu. Since startup, unpredicted occurrences of sulphide copper and, to a Lesser extent, carbonaceous material, has necessitated significant additional short term drilling (other than at grade boundaries), and shift grade control in the pit to control contaminant levels. Remodelling of the orebody based on the most up to date variography and geological interpretation has had a significant impact on the reserves, and thus the whole project development strategy; necessitating the earlier processing of copper ores, and preflotation of the gold ore.This paper discusses some of these points in detail, and in particular highlights how unforseen geological occurrences coupled with processing restrictions can have significant impacts on ore reserves and the mine development schedule.

Narrow reef gold deposits are generally less than 4 m in width and relatively complex geological phenomena. They often display variable geometry, attitude, continuity and internal architecture. Economic grades are mostly restricted to specific structural domain(s) and localised within discrete ore shoots that have a nuggety internal grade distribution. On account of the often extended history of geological events, the specific factors localising gold-rich domains are likely to be unique to a particular mine or even reef. These features lead to a high resource risk and require careful management during both evaluation and mining. The gross form, location and global continuity of gold reefs can generally be determined from surface diamond drilling leading to the definition of Inferred Mineral Resources. It is likely that for the definition of Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources underground development and/or close- spaced diamond drilling will be required. Understanding geometry and continuity permits the resource to be more effectively managed, lowering risk/uncertainty. This in turn will allow for well-informed financial and operational decisions. Most importantly, project expectations and milestones can be set at achievable levels.

This paper outlines the design, justification and performance of a gravity circuit upgrade at the Marvel Loch treatment plant. The design of the upgrade was simple but effective. The key components of the upgrade were the addition of a sluice and a second Knelson Concentrator. The sluice was installed as a pre-concentration step. The upgrade also included the purchase of a Mineral Cone to treat the increased quantity of gravity concentrate. The cost was low because of the use of mostly second-hand equipment. The result was that for a cost of $75 000 the gravity recovery doubled and the overall recovery increased by over one per cent. This paper shows that you do not need to spend millions of dollars to be innovative and successful.

The excavation for the Sydney Opera House Parking Station comprises a large donut shaped underground cavern with a central sandstone pillar. The maximum effective roof span is about 19 m and the rock cover is between 7 m and 8 m. Permanent support for the roof and the various services tunnels consists of a combination of tensioned anchors, and untensioned dowels, and mesh with shortcrete and fibrecrete as the final lining. Steel sets were installed at main intersections.Fundamental to the design philosophy for excavation of these spans at such shallow rock cover was the use of monitoring to check on the adequacy of the installed support. Prior to excavation, extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers and surface settlement survey stations were installed. Underground survey stations, anchor load cells and shotcrete pressure cells were installed as excavation proceeded. Excavation commenced at the crown using an initial heading and three widening stages. Geological mapping during excavation confirmed borehole expectations, namely sandstone beds 1 to 4 m thick interbedded with thin shale units. Bedding plane contacts varied over short distances from tight partings to thick brecciated seams. Jointing was subvertical and joints tended to be bed-limited.

Online analysis of continuous and batch processes has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, with examples ranging from petrochemicals to pharmaceuticals, to industrial biotechnology and food and drink. The particularly challenging environment of alumina processing has meant that instrumentation needs specific features and characteristics to be truly suitable, features such as: robustness, resistance to caustic conditions both in the analyte and the ambient environment, and reliability for long-term continuous use. Here we present the development of a novel FTIR spectrometer that achieves these requirements through the use of a static optics arrangement of mirrors, and stable diamond-tipped light-pipe probe. Firstly we give a very brief explanation of spectroscopic analysis, and the difference between FTIR and other infrared methodologies. Next we outline the novel arrangement of mirrors required to produce an interferogram without moving mirrors, and compare the benefits and drawbacks of this approach instead of conventional designs. We then share the results of laboratory analysis of synthetic Bayer liquors, with detection limits for aluminium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and various sodium salts of organic acids. We then share the results of analysis on production samples, both in idealised laboratory conditions and then online in the process itself. Lastly we present work on in situ ultrasonic descaling solutions to avoid scale build-up and provide continuous cleaning of the probe – preventing the need for probe removal and manual cleaning.

Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

The Goodyear nickel prospect is located 45 km southeast of Kalgoorlie (31.04¦S, 121.80¦E) near the eastern boundary of Hampton Area - East Location 45 (Figure 1). Nickel mineralisation was discovered on the Goodyear prospect in March 1996 when a reverse circulation drillhole (GYC5), initially drilled in December 1995, was deepened to meet a minimum footwall penetration requirement of 20 in that had been set for the drill program. Approximately 3 in of sulphides averaging 4.9 per cent nickel was intersected from 296 metres down-hole, this being within 2 in of the first end-of-hole. Hole GYC5 was part of an eight hole drilling program undertaken by Titan Resources in late-1995. This program was designed to test whether nickel mineralisation in the Dunlop prospect, discovered by the Western Mining Corporation - BHP Camylia Joint Venture immediately east of the East Location 45 boundary, continued across the tenement boundary. The area targeted by the initial drill program had been explored by Western Mining Corporation in the mid-1980s using extensive surface sampling and a drilling program that included 17 RAB and percussion drillholes. None of these holes intersected nickel Mineralisation.\

The acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) of rock sample containing significant iron carbonates and/or reactive framboidal pyrite can be a difficult parameter to determine. Results indicated that negative ANC results can occur if reactive sulfide minerals are present; and an over-estimation of ANC will result if significant Fe rich carbonate minerals are present during industry standard ANC tests. In this paper we investigate these problems. Results showed that a significant lag period may be needed (up to 432 hours) after standard Sobek ANC type tests of siderite for the complete hydrolysis of iron released from this mineral. This even occurred with standard industry modifications that included the addition of two drops of hydrogen peroxide. In this work we use a modified Sobek test that included filtering, and thence continued hydrogen peroxide addition until there was no subsequent pH drop, followed by back titration to pH 7.0. Results indicated that the ANC for the siderite (after zero hours) was immediately comparable to the ANC determined after 432 hours lag by standard Sobek type tests; and a calculated theoretical carbonate ANC. Investigations of coal waste samples containing significant framboidal pyrite indicated that standard Sobek ANC type tests can result in negative ANC values due to the oxidation of this reactive pyrite. Because sulfide acidity is already addressed by the MPA calculation, the inclusion of sulfide acidity as part of the ANC determination is effectively biased towards acid generation and thus positive NAPP values. Negative ANC values cannot be ignored or assumed to be zero as this masks any actual ANC available within the sample, which may possibly affect AMD categorisation. This sulfide acidity can be factored out using the quantity of S in the ANC digestion liquor and knowing the non-acid generating sulfate content of the sample prior to ANC testing. Results indicated that incomplete iron hydrolysis at the completion of the Modified Sobek ANC test is not only a function of iron carbonate dissolution, but is also related to the dissolution of Fe-sulfate salts, and the oxidation of reactive sulfides such as framboidal pyrite.

Flooding with surface water is the preferred technique for the abatement of acidification from pyrite oxidation in the lakes of abandoned Lusatian lignite mines. However, water resources of the region are limited and in addition, interruption of water inflow during the summer and the termination of the flooding process after reaching the final water level can lead to a re-acidification of the lakes. The development of three mining lakes with a surface-water flooding history of six to 28 years was analysed û in two lakes on the basis of fortnightly to monthly hydrochemical monitoring data. During summer flooding interruption, the younger lakes showed a decrease in pH from neutral down to pH 4. The degree of the pH decrease depended on the intensity of the groundwater inflow from the overburden dumps and this affected the hypolimnion more than the epilimnion. The third lake was flooded 28 years ago and up to now, interruption of the surface water inflow resulted in re-acidification. These three examples were able to show the benefits and limits of the surface water flooding technique for the abatement of Lusatian mining lake acidification.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. With the depletion of the mineral reserves that can be mined by surface mining, demand for highly productive and safe underground mines will increase. Underground drill and blast techniques continue to be refined but true æmass productionÆ is difficult to achieve. As is evidenced by the longwall mining of coal, alternative mining methods based on mechanised mining can meet the expectations but the issues of how to effectively cut strong rocks, how to define the orebody and how the mechanised miners can be automated and maintained all need to be addressed. CMTE is working in all of these areas. We believe that the oscillating disc cutter may provide the long sought-after breakthrough in mechanised rock cutting. Disc cutters are one of the most robust designs of cutting tool and the cutters attack the rock in a manner which effects direct tensile breakage. The internal cutter drive and the inertial damping mean that the already low cutter forces are not all transmitted back to the machine, making it possible to design lightweight, flexible mining systems. For orebody delineation drill monitoring, drillhole logging and geophysical imaging are key procedures being developed at CMTE. To automate mining machines, work is progressing well in the development of systems for autonomous vehicle navigation and mining robotics. A strategic contribution to maintenance issues is being made through the development of procedures for automatic analysis of used oils, monitoring the strength of mechanical structures, and operating point optimisation.

The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. The precious metallogenic period ranges mainly from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160 Ma-110 Ma); subordinate mineralisation occurred during the Hercynian period, and was rare in the proterozoic.Seven precious metallogenic belts are recognised from east to west, i.e. from continent to the margin active belts, as follows:1. Au-Ag-Te metallogenic belt of East Shandong Province2. Au-Ag-Pb-Zn metallogenic belt of west Liaoning-Miyun area3. Au-Os-Ir-Cr-Cu Mo metallogenic belt of Chengde Pingquan area4.
