One common problem for blasting in iron ore mines with significant weathering is the occurrence of large blocks of hard rock mixed with softer material. This situation causes a problem for blasting design and sometimes produces large boulders of rock that require a secondary blasting, as well as excavation difficulties. To minimise this situation, geophysical techniques were used to identify the hardest material amid the weathered material. To study the problem, seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) methods were used in an intensely weathered Brazilian iron ore deposit. The methods of GPR combined with IP, resistivity and seismic showed to be effective in modelling the contrast among hard, friable materials and soil. The results were used to improve the geological model and create more favourable conditions for the subsequent blast design. The blast design based on geophysical/geological models resulted in significant improvement in the fragmentation of the iron ore. This was achieved by the adoption of a specific drilling pattern for a given geological situation. With the new specialised blasting design the formation of boulders was eliminated.CITATION:Vieira, L and Koppe, J C, 2015. The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is one of the most essential soil properties in unsaturated soil mechanics. The water flow and storage characteristics of an unsaturated soil are closely related to the amount of water contained in the pores and the negative pore-water pressure in the soil. These are both in turn, related to the particle-size distribution and the plasticity of the soil. The SWCC is obtained by laboratory testing which is difficult to perform, costly and time consuming. There is a significant advantage in establishing typical SWCC envelopes for different soil types from a geotechnical design and analysis viewpoint. This paper presents some of the research work undertaken by UWA and NTU to develop SWCC envelopes for soil types classified in terms of the ASTM D2487 Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). This was done by establishing a large database of soils from across the world, classifying them according to ASTM D2487 and undertaking SWCC testing for each soil. Full-stream mechanised sampling apparatus, that collect a full cross-sectional increment from the complete screen discharge, will always be the preferred option for sampling screen overflows. However, the reality is that provisions for automated sampling are rarely, if ever, provided at the discharges of individual screens within beneficiation plants.Sampling from the discharge of high capacity vibrating screens, especially multi-slope screens, is subject to sampling bias, due to the stratification of the ore that occurs on the vibrating screen deck. The stratification in the vibrating bed translates to a stratified falling stream at the discharge end of the screen, typically with smaller particles at the back of the falling stream and large particles at the front of the falling stream (Figure 1).The chemical and physical characteristics of heterogeneous ore (mineral or coal) particles vary significantly with particle size. If samples do not correctly reflect the source material size distribution, they will be biased and the resulting analytical/assay data will not reflect the actual physical nor chemical characteristics of the source material.Prior published data for coal preparation research (Australian Coal Association Research Program) has demonstrated that a bias appears to exist for samples collected from high capacity multi-slope screens.A new form of sampling scoop has been developed with the aim of overcoming this issue.Bias was evaluated at a coal preparation plant by comparing the desliming screen overflow size distribution to that for æreferenceÆ coal preparation plant feed samples collected using the recognised stopped-belt technique. The study procured 20 sets of comparison samples in order to ensure statistical relevance.Two forms of sampling device were employed for the multislope screen discharge.A conventional square aperture scoop was demonstrated to exhibit a significant coarse bias, in that the resulting samples exhibited a significantly coarser size distribution compared to the reference samples. Polymetallic hydrothermal veins of the Western Cascades are hosted in propylitically altered Tertiary volcanics of calc-alkaline affinity and (or) in nearby, altered, and compositionally similar plutons. Ores from shallow and now abandoned mines produced mostly gold and were considered to be of epithermal origin. However, recent discovery of breccia and porphyry types of Cu-Mo mineralisation and other data suggest that the deposits of this terrane vary systematically both regionally, south to north, and locally, high to low altitudes. The evidence includes changes in (1) size, composition, and complexity of plutons, (2) types of mineral deposits; (3) assemblages of alteration and ore minerals; (4) trace metal geochemistry of host rocks; and (5) fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data. They collectively imply a consanguineous origin of vein, breccia, and disseminated-veinlet types of mineralisation by magmatic hydrothermal processes.

The development and application of new effective environmentally friendly reagents for the flotation of thin and ultrathin mineral components is an urgent task. The analysis of the nomenclature of chemicals, including flotation reagents and flocculants, showed that water-soluble polymers (WSP) might be used in flotation separation of fine grinding products containing non-ferrous and precious metals. Water-soluble polymers that are responsive to temperature changes are the most attractive as reagents during flotation. These are the thermo-responsive polymers or thermomorphic polymers. The presence of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the polymer molecule contributes to the formation of a coordination bond with non-ferrous and precious metals. A research conducted at the ICEMR RAS within the framework of the scientific school of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Chanturia helped to develop a method of flotation of finely ground mineral particles containing valuable components using modified thermomorphic polymers. The paper focuses on the experimental study of poly (vinyl caprolactam) (PVC) as a flotation reagent for gold recovery from finely ground mineral products. PVC is a ready-made water-soluble thermosensitive polymer that does not require complex synthesis. PVC has a high ability to form complexes in an aqueous environment when heated. According to experimental data, the polymer interacts with gold nanoparticles, contributing to the extraction of gold from fine mineral products and the tailings that makes it perspective as an additional flotation agent for the processing of gold-containing ores.

Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is a bonding phase in the iron ore sinter. The phase transition upon melting of SFCA was investigated with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The initial melting of SFCA occurred at 1183.2°C and a massive melting was found at around 1351.1–1358.2°C. A phase transition-melting was investigated at 1476.5–1478.7°C. The liquid phase was composed of immiscible phases. The present results would be utilised to design a new iron ore sinter for better processing performance in a hydrogenenriched ironmaking process.

Many maintenance managers find it difficult to justify investments in maintenance improvement initiatives. In part, this is due to a tendency by mine managers to regard maintenance purely as a cost centre, and not as a process able to influence productive capacity and profit. It is also hindered by a lack of alignment between commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers, and the lack of formal business training amongst maintenance professionals. With this in mind, a model to assist maintenance managers in evaluating the benefits of maintenance improvement projects was recently formulated. The model considers four cost saving dimensions. These are: 1. reduction in the cost of unplanned repairs and maintenance,2. increased or accelerated production and/or sales,3. spares inventory reduction, and4. reduction in over-investment in physical assets and operating costs. This paper discusses the application of this model and a number of numerical examples are given to justify investments in maintenance improvement projects having varying objectives.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The paper presents a model of a multigrade monitoring-management structure for support to decision making and management in real and extended time in mineral processing (MP). The model was created as a result of a long-lasting research, design and development of mining, computer integrated monitoring-management systems. Apart from the general explanations, the authorsÆ state in the introduction that efficiency of a system for support to decision-making and management in mineral processing is more difficult to achieve by conventional approaches, than by the fuzzy logic approach. Starting from the multiphase structure of process flows in MP, the following are process and monitoring-management oriented graphs. The graphs served as a foundation of the multigrade hierarchical fuzzy model for support to decision making and management in MP. Following the example of the monitoring-management system of the æRudnikÆ mine flotation plant, fuzzy logic implementation was shown. The key conclusions of the paper are that fuzzyfication of layers of the decision making and management model has full justification due to the complexity and dynamics of mineral processing processes, complications and often insurmountable difficulties concerning the precise description of real systems by conventional mathematical tools, variability of external influences, and the (general) non-linearity of the MP processes management criteria functions.

The post pillar cut and fill stoping method has been adopted by King Island Scheelite for the extraction of the main Dolphin orebody. The orebody is a massive, tabular deposit varying from 10 to 50 metres in thickness, and dipping at approximately 30¦ towards and under the sea bed. The mining method was selected for 1. maintenance of hangingwall support under the sea bed; 2. maximisation of first stage ore extraction; 3. flexibility of mining, allowing maintenance of grade and selective mining around waste bands within the orebody, and 4. compatibility of existing equipment both with stoping and the on-going underground mine development programme. Stope parameters were established on the basis of initial rock stress analyses, and since the undercut phase of mining the stoping programme has been monitored with various types of deformation measuring devices installed in a series of large diameter boreholes.

The Honeymoon nickel sulphide deposits are located 45 km south of Wiluna in the 2.7 Ga old Agnew-Wiluna greenstone belt in the NE of the Yilgarn Craton (Figure 1). Both disseminated and massive nickel sulphide deposits are present within the deformed and metamorphosed Honeymoon Well ultramafic complex and are hosted by distinctly different komatiitic lithologies (Gole et al, 1996). The deposit styles and host rock lithologies reflect formation in markedly different volcanic settings. Metasomatism has affected parts of the ultramafic complex, including sections of the sulphide deposits, and has had a marked impact on mineralogy and bulk sulphide compositions. The present indicated resource is 158 Mt at 0.71 per cent Ni in four deposits (0.4 per cent Ni cut-off, resources above 300 m depth, December 1995). This includes a massive sulphide resource of 2.5 Mt at 3.36 per cent Ni.

This paper describes the ENVIB software system, which has been developed in a menu-driven form to aid in the monitoring and assess- ment of vibration caused by routine blasting operations and for research and development projects. The paper gives an outline of the capabilities of the system by means of screen-dumps and a general descriptive commentary. Technical notes have been added where appropriate to further describe the system. The ENVIB system covers: I . Analysis of blast vibration results, and preparation of graphs and tables for control and estimation purposes. 2. Effects of atmospheric conditions and air vibration propagation. 3. Real-time acquisition and analysis of analogue blast vibration sig- nals directly from transducer equipment or from FM tapes. 4. Analysis of digital files on floppy disc or transferred via the serial port from blast monitoring equipment. 5. Transfer function calculation for structure response studies.

This paper outlines a laboratory-based design method, founded in critical state soil mechanics, for identification of an appropriate compaction specification to ensure dilative conditions prevail across the design TSF stress range. The method makes use of the critical state line (CSL) and consolidation tests prepared at varying compactive efforts. The CSL and consolidation curves are plotted together in e-log p’ space, with the compaction curves transformed from vertical effective stress to mean effective stress using the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). Consideration is given to the sensitivity of K0 as it is generally not available during the design phase. An example of the design method is illustrated with laboratory data.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

Bulk Ore Sorting (BOS) has the potential to add significant value to mining operations by manipulating the feed grade and throughput to the processing plant. However, assessing the performance of BOS is complex, as it is influenced by geology, equipment, spatial and time domains. This increases the risk (real and perceived) of the technology. To manage risk, brownfield operations have the option to: (a) first test the variability in feed grade using a detector on the feed conveyor and subsequently construct the diverter and associated materials handling equipment when the value is established; or (b) conduct site trials with standalone sorting plants. The approaches described for brownfield projects are not available for greenfield projects where the in-situ heterogeneity needs to be quantified and translated into an economic evaluation to test the viability of BOS. Ausenco has developed a methodology that allows assessing the in-situ ore heterogeneity and uses an in-house technoeconomic model to determine the value of BOS for greenfield projects and assess the effects of sorting performance on project economics. The in-situ grade heterogeneity can be measured on a length of drill core and fitted to a mathematical model to assign a heterogeneity index. Given the spatial location, this heterogeneity index can be mapped across a deposit in combination with the average grade. Linking this information with relevant mixing models can determine the likely technical performance of BOS at an operation. However, the real value is only realised when this technical understanding is linked with an economic model and used to optimise the mine plan. Three case studies will be presented that show how Ausenco applies this methodology to assess the value of bulk ore sorting for greenfield studies.

Martabe gold and silver mine is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste from the excavations is a by-product to be scheduled and used for construction of the tailings storage facility (TSF). These plans need to be aligned to ensure the tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. The TSF embankment construction includes potentially acid forming (PAF) waste that needs to be progressively sealed and rehabilitated to meet the closure requirements of the future.The mine is situated approximately 3 kilometres north of the township of Batangtoru in a seismically active zone between the off-shore subduction zone and the trans Sumatran fault. The mining operation currently includes two open cut pits with a third in development stage, an integrated TSF and dualpurpose valley-fill type waste rock storage facility (WRSF) and TSF embankment. Mine waste is used in construction of the WRSF / TSF embankment, including PAF waste rock, which needs to be scheduled for optimal use in construction activities in a manner that mitigates future acidic and metalliferous drainage (AMD) risks (Pearce and O’Kane, 2017).The Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans must satisfy both optimal pit development to maximise NPV and suitable delivery of waste for effective TSF construction matching the rate of rise of tailings, and consider AMD management, progressive rehabilitation and ultimately effective sustainable mine closure. Robe River Iron Associates (RRIA or Robe) is widely regarded as the worldÆs most cost-effective, consistent and reliable supplier of iron ore. It has been in operation since 1972 and globally is the fourth largest seaborne trader in iron ore exporting 25.5 million tonnes of -9.5 mm sinter fines and 4.5 million tonnes of pisolite lump (-31.5 +6.3 mm) during 1999. Robe is a joint venture that controls major iron ore resources in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. ItÆs participants are North Limited with an interest of 53 per cent (65 per cent including minority interests) and Japanese companies Mitsui (33 per cent), Nippon Steel Australia (10.5 per cent) and Sumitomo Metal Australia (3.5 per cent). Robe River Mining Co Pty Ltd manages the project which is a subsidiary of North Limited and Mitsui.

Heap leach pads are composed of mined ore, usually crushed, disposed on liners to be processed with leach solutions, and the tail of the process is called “spent ore” which are then transported by conveyor belts to be disposed into dumps. It is often to observe stability problems in these dumps, that could affect the equipment working on it and the continuity of the whole mine process. These problems are related to an excess of water content at the spent ore, therefore the operational efforts are focused onto control this geotechnical parameter.This work presents the results of different geotechnical laboratory testing, using samples of spent ore of a mining operation in the north of Chile. In the last 10 years, 3 campaigns have been made to get samples. Valuable information was obtained to identify how specific operational/metallurgical factors could affect the geotechnical behaviour of the spent ore. Special attention is given to the decision to change the metallurgical process adding salt to the heap leach process and its impact to its hydraulic conductivity.Historically, the process has been based on the leaching of oxides and sulphides materials, in separate campaigns, in which it is possible to observe different geotechnical response in the spent ore generated. Recently, it was implemented a new process in which the materials are blended and salt is added, to improve metallurgical performance in terms of recovery. This change generate impacts in the dump, since the geotechnical parameters are affected; decreasing hydraulic conductivity in about one order of magnitude (explained by the salt added).Changes are shown in the geotechnical parameters of the spent ore, considering that the mining source is the same, and how the operational process and dump design are affected.CITATION:Rimmelin, R and Vergara, C, 2018.
