The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. Dry milling circuits that include high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical roller mills (VRM) and air classification have replaced dry ball milling in cement production, but how do they compare to wet milling and classification circuits in mineral processing plants? Two case studies are presented that compare the energy efficiency, wear, liberation and capital cost of dry and wet milling circuits. In both case studies the VRM and HPGR consume half the energy of a wet tumbling mill for the same duty. However, the dry classification system tends to significantly erode the energy benefits. A number of improvement opportunities are presented that have the potential to improve the energy and capital efficiency of dry milling circuits. These improvement opportunities focus on the dry classification system that consumes significant energy in heating and fan power requirements and requires a large proportion of the footprint.

The Globe-Progress Mine is an open pit gold mine that is part of the larger Reefton Goldfields deposit located on the West Coast of New Zealand. The regional geology comprises a series of north to south oriented fold structures that have undergone post-deformation mineralisation. The structural geology within the mine itself is more complex, with major shears hosting numerous high-grade mineralised quartz shoots and splays that have been historically mined.The selective mining of ore within the pit is challenging due to the orientations of the hanging wall and footwall areas of the main Globe shear zone, the lithologies of these areas which range from highly brecciated and sheared material to competent mineralised host rock, and in the hazards presented by the numerous old historic underground workings. The coordination of drilling, modelling and excavation of the ore requires careful planning to maximise recovery whilst operating with the pit design boundaries.Grade control packages are custom designed to reflect the orientation of the footwall and hanging wall mineralisation. The shear material in the footwall zone dips between 60° and 70° and requires angled drilling whereas the footwall mineralisation is contained in shallow dipping quartz veins sub parallel to bedding and can be vertically drilled to best intercept the mineralisation. Ore excavation is directed so that the contact between the footwall and hanging wall is mined in the correct direction so that any non-visual ore contacts can be safely mined and that the ore-waste dilution is reduced.The ongoing grade control and selective mining of the Globe Progress deposit continues to deliver high grade ore for processing by ensuring that waste and dilution of ore is reduced and that recovery is maximised.

Research into the dynamic properties of ground support elements continues to grow at a global level, given the increasing importance of this field of application within underground hard rock mining. Measuring the mechanical response of such elements under the rapid onset of simulated rock burst loads forms the basis for this experimental work, typically utilising gravitational drop testing methods. This field of research is fundamentally driven by an increasing need for dynamic performance data, given the constant evolution of rock bolting product designs, materials selection, combination testing and specific application needs based on ground types and loading scenarios. A smaller number of globally recognised dynamic test facilities have predominantly lead research within this arena, typically in association with academic institutes, larger industry groups and government research institutes. However, due to the increasing requirement for dynamic performance data, additional facilities have now emerged in order to satisfy the overall demand for test work. These newer facilities are more typically associated with suppliers to the underground hard rock industry, with experimental designs looking to replicate, at least in part, the work of the primary facilities. For standardisation, repeatability and calibration purposes, the cross validation of test data between primary and secondary facilities becomes an obvious and important consideration across this field of research. This paper outlines the development of a new dynamic drop test facility for testing rock bolts, including the structural design and associated high speed data capture system. Based on the utilisation of identical bolt types, material grades, anchoring systems and decoupled ‘free-lengths’, comparative data has been generated to provide cross validation of the new test facility against data generated by a globally recognised primary facility. The cross validation of data provides increasing confidence in the repeatability and accuracy of the new facility as activity continues towards the provision of further experimental test work.

Recent disasters such as the failure of the Mount Polley tailings embankment remind us of the risks that tailings facilities pose. It is widely recognised that dam-break assessments are a vital tool in identifying the consequences of the failure of a facility, which in turn can be used to develop emergency action plans. A typical assessment includes an estimation of breach parameters and outflow volume, followed by the preparation of an inundation map to illustrate potential flow extents and downstream impacts. This paper focuses on the estimation of outflow volumes, which is an area that the authors feel can be improved. Presently, many types of analyses assume that the volume of tailings released is only a function of the storage volume and dam height. After a review of several documented tailings failures, it has been found that the extent and depth of the supernatant pond needs to be considered as it is just as important, if not more so, as the storage volume and dam height. Tailings facilities with excess water storage have a higher risk of failure as they are more susceptible to overtopping, piping and liquefaction failures. In addition, they pose greater failure consequences as the saturated conditions will lead to more material being mobilised.This paper has reviewed available information on a number of tailings dam failures and proposes an alternative estimation of potential tailings release volumes as a function of supernatant water stored on the facility for use in dam-break analyses. In a broader sense, the paper seeks to shift the current risk paradigm from tailings dam heights to volumes of water stored and provides a basis for continuing research and discussion.CITATION:Rourke, H and Luppnow, D, 2015. A detailed, mine scale non-linear numerical model of Rosebery mine has been built for the purpose of simulating life-of-mine global deformations. The model was calibrated using observations of displacement and damage, and was then used to investigate the correlation between dissipated plastic energy (DPE) and seismic event occurrence. The study is unique because the seismic data was collected over a relatively short period using a temporary portable seismic system. It is the intent to undertake significantly more work, but the analysis of limited data shows that a very good, non-linear relation between DPE and event probability is present. The observed correlation is consistent with measurements from other mines where more data was available. With more data, the strength of the correlation will allow the DPE analysis to be used during the design and sequencing phase of planning to better design the mine to minimise seismic hazards.

Whilst communications systems in the mining industry have evolved over the years, the premise remains consistent that reliable communication is vital for safety and operational efficiency. TodayÆs open pit mines are benefiting from advanced developmental efforts based on mesh networking hardware and software technology. This paper highlights Rajant CorporationÆs adaptation of technology, originally developed for the defence and first responder industries, to provide wireless network connectivity in open pit mining applications. Featured is the large-scale deployment of over 300 mobile, meshing access points in the Bingham Canyon Copper mine near Salt Lake City, Utah, the worldÆs largest open pit copper mine. Many companies have positioned themselves, their technology and their product line in the arena of rugged outdoor wireless broadband mesh networking infrastructure. However, Rajant Corporation has combined specialised command and control software and portable networks which offer network extensibility and redundancy that are not available in any other networking solution. Rajant CorporationÆs BreadCrumb« offers unique traits in portability and non-line-of-site networking nodes which intelligently route and broadcast in standard 802.11 protocol. The advantage of RajantÆs solution is especially valuable for users needing equipment moved easily and rapidly into and out of the theatre of operations with uninterrupted network availability. The main differentiators that set the BreadCrumb« network apart from the competitors are mobility (continuous availability), simplicity, ability to properly load balance and power options. In 2007, RajantÆs BreadCrumb« wireless mesh system was selected by the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto, as its primary communications platform for operations within the Bingham Canyon Copper mine, the worldÆs largest open pit copper mine. The Rajant BreadCrumb« technology enables KUCC to gain additional operational efficiencies by tracking, monitoring and managing its copper mining operations. The primary goal of using the BreadCrumb« wireless mesh system Kennecott was to streamline its complex mining operations. KUCC required a high number of moving wireless nodes for improving mine monitoring and control. The Rajant InstaMesh« software running on the wireless BreadCrumb« units connects hundreds of devices to each other while rapidly transporting critical operational data. Kennecott has successfully implemented a large number of BreadCrumb« radios in an interconnected network that allows loader trucks, shovels, pumps, laptops and other production equipment to communicate with each other in real-time. These systems are a mix of secure access nodes that enable data and voice communications across a meshed, self-healing network for fleet dispatch, health monitoring and other critical mining applications. Many of the devices that require wireless communications are moving at all times throughout the wireless mining infrastructure. The BreadCrumb« nodes rapidly adapt to any changes in the network topology, assuring that IP traffic uptime and bandwidth are maximised. The installation layout and data network specifics, as well as maps and data network efficiencies will be detailed in the paper.

Managing blasting operations in four mines surrounded by villages is a challenging task. This study aims to compare the blast-induced flyrock as observed in opencast mines by predicting flyrock distance using a soft computing approach known as an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and Flyrock Predictor software based on empirical studies. Blast design and geotechnical variables such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge, unconfined compressive strength and rock quality designation were selected as independent variables, while flyrock distance was used as a dependent variable. Out of 120 blasts, data from 100 blasts was used to train and test the ANFIS model. Flyrock distance for the remaining 20 blasts was used to evaluate the model. Flyrock distance has also been predicted using Flyrock Predictor software based on an empirical approach using the same data sets as those used for ANFIS. Performance indices like root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error and coefficient of determination (R2) were evaluated to compare the reliability of ANFIS and Flyrock Predictor quantitatively. ANFIS was found to be a better predictive tool, with 1.75 m RMSE and 0.966 R2 compared to Flyrock Predictor, which returned RMSE and R2 values of 2.48 m and 0.932 respectively.CITATION:Trivedi, R, Singh, T N, Gupta, N and Bhandari, S, 2015. Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

Preliminary calculations suggest that spoil piles in the Bowen Basin will undergo approximately 4 m settlement as the ground water table recovers after mining is abandoned. Approximately 1 m of differential settlement is possible. Superimposed on this will be a long term creep settlement of 1-3 m/log cycle of time. Depending on the nature of the spoil material, partially submerged spoil piles could be sufficiently stable although to ensure stability during long term creep it may be necessary to flatten the final spoil pile face to approximately 25¦.

Over the decades, Redpath has undertaken a multitude of tunnelling and underground excavation projects for civil and mining clients both domestically and internationally. These projects have been undertaken through varying strata conditions with differing excavation methods in remote locations and in central business districts.With the recent turbulent nature of the global financial environment, project drivers have been challenged with the emphasis being placed on methods to gain early access to orebodies, rapid development techniques, lower capital costs and reduced labour requirements to name a few.A number of mining companies seeking to achieve these objectives have commenced the journey to better understand the operational constraints, challenges and opportunities that may be available with the use of alternative excavation methods.The development of safe and effective alternative excavation methods that comply with both domestic and international mining legislation and regulatory requirements is a challenge the industry needs to embrace. Given the current cost pressures being faced by the Australian mining industry, some alternative excavation methods offer the potential for longer term sustainability and rapid development of resources.More recently work has been undertaken on a project that challenged the norm and implemented an alternative excavation method with the use of an excavator with a rotating drum cutter head.This paper will review this recent project and provide technical and operational insight into some of the challenges faced in implementing an alternative excavation method in the metalliferous industry.CITATION:Donnelly, C, Ramage, G and Burke, R, 2014. A common problem in the mining industry is that company exploration groups operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company; resulting in poor knowledge transfer (Qureshi and Briggs, 2006) and often priority conflicts with mine geology, operations and project departments. In recognition of this problem, Newcrest created a Minerals Division responsible for stewardship and governance of mineral assets across the value chain from reconnaissance to rehabilitation. It was recognised at an early stage that effective collaboration both internally and externally would be required to improve decision making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies is generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions. However, modern IT-based collaboration systems and practices are relatively simplistic compared to the long-standing practices associated with collaboration and knowledge management in science and engineering disciplines such as geology and mining.The authors of this paper have started a trial of a 12-point plan for effective collaboration, which recognises that significant efficiencies can be gained and barriers to future success removed if more effective collaboration can be achieved between science and engineering divisions in a company along with external professionals and with the collective intelligence (Tapscott and Williams, 2006) of the outside world. To meet growth aspirations some companies, like Newcrest Mining Ltd, are adopting this comprehensive, step change approach by moving from a closed model the isolates mine geologists to an open and collaborative model that uses IT visualisation systems strategically. The paper describes how an open model provides people with the right work environment and the right information at the right time, which will help individuals and workgroups to work more collaboratively day-to-day. The aim is to achieve speed, focus and mitigate risk through an environment where everyone and anyone can contribute effectively (Cisco, 2008).

Hillgrove Resources (HGO) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and from 2011 to 2016 the geology team experienced a consistent negative reconciliation between grade control estimated copper (Cu) grade and the mill received grade. For the first four years, despite trialling various grade control strategies, the monthly variance between geology and mill copper grades fluctuated between -5 per cent to -17 per cent Cu metal depending on the style of mineralisation.In 2015, HGO embarked on various measures which resulted in changes to grade control practices under the advice of consultants. These changes to grade control sampling, estimation and block out practices resulted in six to seven months of consistently poor Mine to Mill reconciliations from -25 per cent to -28 per cent Cu.In an effort to mitigate these poor reconciliations the geology team reintroduced the preconsultant block out and geology driven grade control methods. Blockout reconciliations from this point emulated those seen originally from -8 per cent to -12 per cent (Cu per cent). Early in 2016 the geology team introduced conditional simulation for grade control as opposed to ordinary kriging to better characterise the grade distribution, introduced separate estimation parameters appropriate for every zone of mineralisation, implemented a maximum profit function to optimise the selection of ore and waste, and retained the geology driven block out processes. Since March 2016 the mine has experienced consecutive months of positive Mine to Mill reconciliations, the first seen in six years. Year to date the expected copper metal is within 1 per cent of mill reconciled copper metal.This paper will compare the various sampling methods, estimation algorithms and block out procedures from the past six years to arrive at a robust open pit operating procedure applicable for mineralisation with high short scale variability.CITATION:Reid, M and Arbon, H, 2017. With the advances in software speed and capability, many of us now are running multiple scenarios on entire models rather than just testing small areas or a few blocks. In the authors experience both the geological and geostatistical academic theory and our rules of thumb, often prove un-useable or incorrect in the real world we work in. The only way to truly validate and tune our models is to complete the entire model and ‘see if it works’. If it lacks some property we were expecting, then we need to find out why and/or run different scenarios to see what changes. This is not always possible with tight project timelines but we find ourselves doing more and more of this sort of thing, and in so doing, understand that every deposit is different and requires its own ‘rules’ to get valid and useful results. For the purposes of this paper, this process is termed Empirical Geostatistics. Take Clayton Deutsch’s ‘all realisations all of the time’ concept a step back. Before you even think of simulating, test the alternate realisations generated by alternate parameters such as different domaining, varying search neighbourhood parameters etc.

The planning, design and operation of mines must include the development of positive environmental, community and land-use benefits if it is to achieve good corporate social responsibility and minimise detrimental impacts throughout the life of the mine. Life-of-mine (LOM) planning should, therefore, consider conducting mining activities in the best socially, environmentally and economically acceptable manner, from the commencement of exploration to post-closure of the mine. Current knowledge of LOM activities in relation to public health (life-of-community, or LOC) impacts neither fully captures the full suite of human health and well-being impacts, nor comprehensively informs society on these issues. This knowledge gap is becoming more apparent as public antipathy is increasing towards mining activities within Australia, Canada and globally. The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary and informative results of a literature review to gain insight into the extent of available public health and well-being knowledge associated with mining development. LOM development must also benefit the LOC, in that it must aim to minimise detrimental impacts, and maximise beneficial (including health) impacts on all associated communities. Health planning and programing for mitigation of potential adverse health impacts of mining should extend beyond the scope of work-related injury and illness (resulting from chronic exposure to harmful substances, infectious and lifestyle illnesses), to the health and well-being of workersÆ families and extended associated communities. The main outcomes of mining grade control include defining the boundary between ore and waste and then categorising the ore according to which stockpile it should be sent. A typical workflow includes using general mine planning software (GMP) – such as SurpacTM, VulcanTM or CAE StudioTM – to create three-dimensional wireframes of mineralisation domains, which are used to flag the relevant samples of interest and constrain estimation during block modelling. Creating the wireframes is a time-consuming process, requiring reasonable software skills, patience and an eye for detail. The interpretations can be subjective; indeed, even the same geologist will give different shapes if presented with the same data at different times. The process can become particularly tedious when trying to carry out updates due to new data. It can also be difficult to test the effect of alternative interpretations or grade thresholds because of the time constraints in production.There are now several implicit modelling tools available, either as standalone programs or as add-on modules to existing GMP. In this paper, the authors develop a workflow using implicit modelling methods to show how grades and geology can be rapidly interpreted to provide effective domains for grade estimation. The paper includes case studies from open pit gold mines. hortly after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, the words ‘social distancing’ entered the global lexicon. The effects on the public of social distancing, lockdowns and travel bans are well documented. They also present unique challenges to the mining industry. For Hexagon’s Mining division, this posed a significant challenge. We have built our business – our reputation – on regional, customer-focused service and support. True to Hexagon’s values of being professional, engaged and customer-focused, we innovated to overcome the distance dilemma. Making automation a reality for our customers by implementing and supporting technology projects from a distance has helped deepen partnerships by making it easier to tap into our global experts’ knowledge. For example: • Body cameras were at the heart of a successful safety installation at a mine in Ghana. Despite the pandemic lockdown preventing travel by our South Africa staff into Ghana, the project was completed with minimal delays. • Traditionally, implementation and training for our Blast Movement Technology solution is done physically at the mine site. With COVID-19 travel restrictions in place, we have developed and successfully employed a remote deployment methodology. • Using RealWearTM headsets in the field and utilising the knowledge management platform from HINDSITE, Hexagon workshop technicians have been able to support hardware repairs in local offices, which once would have been undertaken in our overseas offices. • The same headset is being utilised to provide clients with remote mentoring sessions by our skilled team members who are based in our regional locations and unable to travel to their site without extensive quarantine commitments. • In instances where our team members have had to travel to site, we have provided consumer technology such as VR headsets to help them cope with long periods of quarantine to and from site. Post-pandemic, Hexagon will continue to refine and improve this method of working. INTRODUCTION Shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 (COVID) a pandemic, the words ‘social distancing’ entered the global lexicon. As governments, healthcare organisations and the public scrambled to respond to the crisis, one thing became abundantly clear: isolation was and, for most of us, still is the key to maintaining our health. Hexagon, a leader in sensor, software and autonomous solutions, was well positioned to pivot and assist in the global response to the crisis. From simulations of the effects of social distancing to mapping the spread of COVID in real time, to drone technology delivering COVID tests, to providing communities with transparent geospatial information, Hexagon solutions continue to help ensure that innovation is readily available to those who need it most during uncertain times. The kinetics of the interfacial reaction of H2O on liquid silica-saturated iron silicates has been studied by means of measurement of the HDO-H2 isotope exchange reaction. The apparent first order rate constant, ka, was found to be inversely proportional to the H20/H2 ratio, consistent with two electron (melt to adsorbed/dissociating molecule) transfer mechanism and can be given by the expression In ka = -1.97 x 104/T + 1.57 - ln(pH2O/pH2), where the units for ka are mol cm -2 s-1 atm 1. The results of the current study are shown to be consistent with the indirect measurements of earlier work.

This paper extends the existing knowledge associated with the design and placement of prefabricated pastefill barricades through a consideration of asymmetric drive geometry and conditions. The load capacity of prefabricated barricades and their failure modes are considered in relation to abutment geology and barricade geometry that includes curvature and span and drive geometry that includes abutment angles, haunch angles and misalignment. Design charts are provided for typical barricade sizes to provide general guidance for design capacities and optimising location placement based on asymmetric drive geometry. A recent barricade failure is considered in relation to the drive geometry and the potential impact it had on the installed capacity.
