The Savage River open cut magnetite mine is located in rugged terrain in densely rain forested northwest Tasmania. The mine and concentrating plant are both in the Savage River valley. Pickand Mather Incorporated (PMI) operated Savage River as an open cut magnetite mine between 1966 and 1996. Acid rock drainage (ARD) was first noted in the last ten years of the operation, leading to elevated concentrations of heavy metals downstream of the mine. When operations ceased in 1996, PMI returned the mine to the Tasmanian Government along with a remediation fund of $11.4 million. At that time, the assessed cost of remediation was in excess of $120 million. As a result of the ongoing ARD contamination and to facilitate both a new operation and effective remediation, Goldamere Pty Ltd negotiated an agreement with the Tasmanian Government in 1996, which resulted in the Goldamere Act and the Goldamere Agreement. The agreement has allowed Australian Bulk Minerals (ABM) to remediate the Savage River mine in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government while re-invigorating a previously closed mine by providing ABM with an indemnity against past pollution. ABM can configure its mine and waste planning activities to maximise remediation benefits without fear of future litigation for past mistakes. The effect to date has been the development of a long-term strategy to remediate the Savage River and short-term remediation works such as water management, which provide benefits to the ecosystem. After five years, the Savage River is no longer significantly impacted by ARD for 30 kilometres downstream and trout are now reported within the reaches of the mining lease. The arrangements between ABM and the Tasmanian Government are an example of a genuine WIN WIN situation where co-operative environmental management of the site results in significant improvements and where the æregulatorÆ and the æminerÆ are working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals. The end result is a significant benefit to Tasmania.

Hydraulic backfill is generally retained in stopes using permeable barricades. Mitchell et al (1975), Mitchell (1992) and Grice (1989) have shown that under normal drainage conditions, barricades experience low levels of loading. Cowling et al (1988) have also shown that barricades are susceptible to piping failures if excess water has ponded on the upper backfill surface and if leakage of backfill from the barricades has occurred. During 1997, six hydraulic backfill barricades failed in four different Australian mines. Fortunately, in each case, the quantity of backfill slurry released was small, and no injuries to personnel nor damage occurred. Detailed investigation of two of the incidents showed that the primary cause of failure could be attributed to the delivery of excess quantities of transport water from the low-density slurry. For each of the incidents investigated there was evidence of the development of piping failures, which resulted in hydrostatic loading conditions on the barricades from the ponded water on the upper backfill surface. The circular failure surfaces in the barricades were characteristic of the application of point loading conditions. This paper discusses the circumstances that led to these incidents and analyses the modes of failure. The standards for the safe operating of hydraulic backfill systems are reviewed along with requirements for ongoing management and control. The design requirements of barricade construction are analysed and some appropriate guidelines introduced.

The Mount Isa Mines Copper Mine in Mount Isa started producing copper in 1966. The Copper Mine gradually increased production rates to nearly six million tonnes per year. Over the last three years the mine has been in a gradual ramp down due to the reduction of primary ore sources and head grade. The majority of ore sources are predominantly in pillar retreat sequences bounded by multiple fill masses. There also a substantial lower grade resource delineated to the south of the main orebody. These remaining ore sources present significant engineering challenges to obtain a safe and cost-effective extraction. Stope designs have become increasingly complex and require additional engineering and operations input and analysis. This paper describes the major planning and operational challenges and issues associated with the stope design and extraction of an orebody in the later stages of mine life.

Longstanding occupational health challenges of the underground hard-rock mining sector require both an analysis of historical data to assess evidence of linkages between the source of the problem and subsequent illnesses, as well as investigating the means by which health risks to workers can be eliminated or minimised. This paper refers briefly to a recently established National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) sponsored Epidemiological Study into the incidence of Lung Cancer, contracted by mineworkers in Western Australia (WA) due to the inhalation of diesel exhaust fumes from 1996 to 2012. Thereafter it reviews current knowledge of the nature of the challenges facing those responsible for the health and wellbeing of underground hard-rock miners in WA, commencing with the recent categorisation of diesel exhaust as ‘Carcinogenic to Humans, Group 1’, by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). An attempt is also made to explore how the challenge has changed with the adoption of more advanced engine technologies, including the increased generation of ultra-fine volatile organic and other nucleates, submicron carbonaceous agglomerates and toxic gases.The compounding effect of using the mine decline access entry as both the primary ventilation intake and haulage-way is also discussed, as is the need to develop a more appropriate metric for regulating diesel engine emissions. Finally the paper refers to ongoing in-mine research pursued by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Diesel Laboratory in an underground limestone mine near Morgantown in the USA.CITATION:Jones, O, 2015. Direct ship iron ore (DSO) operations at Extension Hill in Western Australia’s Midwest region have commenced, with fi rst product railed to the port of Geraldton in July 2011. Reserves are 14.8 million tonnes (Mt) of haematite-goethite ore overlying an Archaean BIF-hosted larger magnetite deposit which Mount Gibson Iron Limited (MGI) sold to other parties in 2006.Some unique geological aspects of the deposit shape DSO mining and processing operations. Owner-operator selective mining, blending, crushing and screening on site will produce three million tonnes per year (Mt/a) of Lump and Fines product to be trucked 86 km to Perenjori, railed 232 km to Geraldton, and loaded aboard Panamax-sized ships through the dedicated iron ore shiploader at the Geraldton Port Authority’s Berth 5 facility.The statutory approvals process for this project formally began in 2004, dominating delays in a predevelopment phase which extended over a longer period than the likely life of DSO operations. The lack of transparency, uncertainties and costs inherent in state government processes have influenced decisions made by MGI while assessing other development opportunities in Western Australia. Potential for additional Reserves exists at Extension Hill, however MGI’s ability to extend the mine life will hinge on statutory approval to explore for and evaluate other DSO resources on surrounding granted mining leases.The nature of the resource and use of existing infrastructure for product transport have enabled MGI to keep operating costs and capital intensity of this project relatively low. A tenacious development approach by MGI and robust project economics have fi nally enabled this site to take its place as a revenue earner beside the company’s other DSO operations at Tallering Peak and Koolan Island.

The volcanic successions that host massive sulphide deposits are diverse in composition, facies types and facies relationships. They also show a variety of spatial and temporal relationships to mineralisation. In many examples, such as the Koongie Park Formation in Western Australia, the host succession includes more or less conformable syn-volcanic sills with peperitic contacts. Such sills can be an important source of heat for fluid circulation, influencing patterns of hydrothermal alteration and the location of co-eval and later mineralisation. The impact of syn-volcanic sills on the host succession depends in part on the initial porosity and permeability of the enclosing facies. The special properties of glassy pumice û being highly porous, permeable, and reactive û allow pumice-rich facies to preferentially focus hydrothermal fluid flow. However, the same properties promote early alteration and porosity reduction. Hence, the diagenetic and compaction history of pumiceous facies strongly influences their potential to host massive sulphide mineralisation. In contrast to pumice, dense glass has relatively low porosity, at least initially, and does not compact. Non-vesicular glass is a major component of submarine lavas, syn-volcanic intrusions and some volcaniclastic facies. However, especially in submarine settings, dense glass is commonly intensely perlitically fractured soon after eruption. The fractures greatly increase the porosity and permeability, locally accelerating diagenetic and hydrothermal alteration. In addition to false pyroclastic textures, altered perlite may exhibit false porphyritic textures. Silica- or feldspar-altered perlite kernels surrounded by intensely altered phyllosilicate domains can resemble phenocrysts in a fine grained groundmass.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. The mining industry has come through a period of major change in community expectations regarding safety and environmental impact and these changes can be expected to continue in the future. These changes are ultimately reflected in Government regulations and industry safety standards and form the basis of the ælicense to operateÆ. Equally, advances in technology have made possible new equipment and processes either available now, or close to completion, that will allow mines to meet these more stringent expectations if properly introduced. Changes in technology provide opportunities for mine management to introduce new systems that will remove people from hazardous areas and lead to improvements in the ætriple bottom lineÆ. In a longer time frame of five to ten years, novel and advanced technologies that are currently being developed will deliver new mining methods and conversion of presently uneconomic resources to ore. This is consistent with the time frame required to develop a new mine from discovery. Strategic decisions can be taken now by mine designers to enable the introduction of these major technology changes. Examples of both practical and strategic opportunities are drawn from the integration of rock cutting/blasting, automation, electronic communications and new mining methods. This paper discusses emerging industry trends, changes to legislative framework and some practical choices for existing and imminent technology.

The requirement of mineral resources is increasing as the economy is continually increasing in China. The mining practices of various complex sulphide deposits and precious metal deposits, and the treatment of mine tailings and other industrial solid wastes, have greatly improved fill quality in the metal mines. From early-1980s, high density slurry fill, paste fill of total tailings, low density slurry fill with addition of silicate gelling agent, etc has been studied and applied, and some progress has been achieved. Today, mine tailings, slag and power plant ash are widely used as fill materials in mining. A number of cemented fill mines equipped with large capacity trackless mining machines are in production. Recently, The 3rd Chinese National Symposium on Mining with Backfill, 1995 has been held, the progress of fill technology in mines has been exchanged and summarised. In the paper, some aspects of fill technology used in the metal mines of China are briefly introduced and some applications of fill research work are presented.

This paper is concerned with the tracking of particles in the froth phase of an aerated water/glycerol mixture. Experiments have been carried out in a specially designed laboratory flotation cell that allows formation of a deep froth. Phosphorescent tracer particles of various sizes were injected into the centre of a froth column where they were excited by ultraviolet lights, positioned at the back and front of the column. The motion of particles was captured on a digital camera with a green filter. The images from the digital camera were then transferred to a computer and an image analysis program was used to convert the colour intensity to the concentration of particles at each location within the froth. The tracer technique was used to determine the dispersion of hydrophilic particles and the variation of the concentration of solids with axial and radial positions.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised. This paper describes the autogenous carrier flotation of 0 - 20 ¦m ilmenite using 40 -- 80 }tm ilmenite as carrier. Investigation is made of the influence of main technological parameters on autogenous carrier flotation. The mechanism of autogenous carrier flotation is discussed using extended DLVO theory. The main conclusions are as follows: 1. the smaller the fine particles the more easily they adhere.to carriers; 2. the selectivity of autogenous carrier flotation depends on the selectivity of adsorption of collector. In the autogenous carrier flotation of ilmenite/plagioclase mixture assaying 15.35 per cent TiO2, a concentrate containing 47.17 per cent Ti02 can be obtained by primary separation with a recovery of 93.05 per cent. Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype. Large tonnages of low-grade haematite ores need to be treated every day in China. One of the mineralogical characteristics of these haematite ores is that the grain size of haematite is smaller than that of quartz and is not uniform in the ores. Therefore, a flow sheet consisting of gravity concentration, low-intensity magnetic separation, high-intensity magnetic separation and reverse flotation is mainly used to separate haematite ores in China, to obtain acceptable beneficiation performance and reduce the operating costs. Nowadays, whether based on mineral processing practice or theoretical analysis, the results show that the application of the above-mentioned flow sheet is able to take full advantage of these mineral processing methods and achieves satisfactory benefi ciation of haematite ores. For example, when the iron grade of the haematite ore is about 29 per cent Fe, a concentrate assaying 68 per cent Fe can be obtained and the recovery of iron is over 80 per cent. In the future, research work on the beneficiation of haematite ores should focus on investigating the most feasible particle size for gravity concentration circuit feed so that the operating costs can be reduced and ultimately the separation performance can be improved.

Acidic reductive leaching is one of the best known and most widely employed chemical processes for beneficiating minerals of industrial interest. Conventional acidic leaching with sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), employed to bleach industrial minerals used in the production of ceramics, glassware, paper etc, does not always allow products of high quality to be obtained. In the work reported here two reducing agents, ascorbic acid and oxalic acid, have been employed in a medium acidified by means of sulphuric acid. Continuous systematic tests have been performed on a kaolin sample containing 0.8 per cent Fe2O3, adopting various operating parameters such as, leaching time, temperature and reagent concentration. In each case the total quantity of bi- and trivalent iron dissolved was ascertained. Removal of 80 per cent and 100 per cent of iron with ascorbic and oxalic acid respectively was obtained, while less than one per cent of iron was dissolved in the presence of sulphuric acid only. Products having a very good degree of whiteness (92 - 94 per cent) were obtained, whereas with sodium dithionite the degree of whiteness was in the 85 to 88 per cent range. The best conditions identified were applied to a sample of quartz for the removal of ferric impurities.

Based on the idea to copy crystallisation and precipitation phenomena occurring in nature, a new technology was developed allowing the preparation of metastable, mineral forming solutions. If these solutions are brought into soil or rock formations, directed precipitation of slightly soluble minerals takes place. Immobilisation of dissolved heavy metals as well as overlaying of reactive mineral surfaces with insoluble minerals can be achieved. It is possible to prepare solutions leading to the formation of gypsum, BaSO4, CaCO3, Ca(OH)2, Al(OH)3 or Fe(OH)3. The successful large-scale application of BaSO4 forming solutions was demonstrated in the former uranium mine Koenigstein of Wismut GmbH, (Germany).

The issue of flyrock is very important in the operation of all mineral extraction sites that use blasting. Unlike the other environmental effects of blasting, ground vibrations and air overpressure, flyrock is (or should be) a rare event, with severe consequences which may include damage to property, injury or fatalities. These physical consequences are often matched by a loss in public confidence in the management of the operation, mistrust and bad press. In this work a deterministic analysis of flyrock was carried out using the equations of a particle in motion with drag. The solutions to these equations were used to reproduce the curves of Lundborg et al (1975) for the relationship between flyrock boulder size and maximum ejection distance. A probabilistic approach based on Monte Carlo simulation was built up with the analytical model using published data together with local case study material. A typical quarry blast situation was modelled and estimates of safe standoff distances were determined using risk assessment techniques.

With increasing depth of mining, geotech nical factors assume increasing importance in the design and operation of open pit coal mines. Dragline strip mines are particularly sensitive to stability conditions since the draoline is a relatively inflexible machine, particularly in relation to its limited dump- ing radius for overburden disposal. Geotechnical factors relevant to strip mine design include: 1. spoil pile stability 2. wall stability 3. floor stability 4. excavation characteristics 5. groundwater conditions A basic geotechnical investigation pro- gram for new mine feasibility studies is described. This includes: 1. terrain evaluation 2. geotechnical drilling and logging 3. geophysical logging 4. materials testing 5. seismic refraction traversing 6. groundwater studies Such a program will give an overall geotech- nical assessment of the site and highlight any areas which may require further, more detailed Investigations

The mining industry faces concurrent pressures of reducing water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in coming years. However, the interactions between water and energy use, as well as GHG emissions have largely been neglected in modelling studies to date. In addition, investigations tend to focus on the unit operation scale, with little consideration of whole-of-site or regional scale effects.This paper presents an application of a hierarchical systems model (HSM) developed to represent water, energy and GHG emissions fluxes at scales ranging from the unit operation, to the site level, to the regional level. The model allows for the linkages between water use, energy use and GHG emissions to be examined in a flexible and intuitive way, so that mine sites can predict energy and emissions impacts of water use reduction schemes and vice versa. This paper examines whether this approach can also be applied to the regional scale with multiple mine sites.The model is used to conduct a case study of several coal mines in the Bowen Basin, Australia, to compare the utility of centralised and decentralised mine water treatment schemes. The case study takes into account geographical factors (such as water pumping distances and elevations), economic factors (such as capital and operating cost curves for desalination treatment plants) and regional factors (such as regionally varying climates and associated variance in mine water volumes and quality).The case study results indicate that treatment of saline mine water incurs a trade-off between water and energy use in all cases. However, significant cost differences between centralised and decentralised schemes can be observed in a simple economic analysis. Upgrading of Indonesia's Bauxite by Washing Method There were eight bauxite samples used in this research, three samples from Kijang contain total SiO2 18.36 - 29.16 per cent, Al2O3 40.12 - 48.36 per cent, Fe2O3 4.27 - 5.13 per cent, one sample from Tayan, contains total SiO2 4.69 per cent, Al2O3 38.95 per cent, and Fe2O3 19.67 per cent, and four samples from Mempawah contain total SiO2 33.5 - 44.8 per cent, Al2O3 29.8 - 35.9 per cent, Fe2O3 7.29 - 9.88 per cent. All of those bauxite ores have not fulfilled the requirement for Bayer process yet; therefore simple up-grading using a rotary drum scrubber is needed. The scrubbing process was carried out with time variable up to 60 minutes with solid percentage applied was 50 per cent and rotary speed was set up 30 rev/min. The bauxite was washed by following steps: scrubbing, screening, drying, and finally it was analysed to show chemical content. The washed bauxite produced has size fraction that is retained on the 1.7 mm of screen opening. The result of the research shows that the higher alumina content of the raw bauxite, the longer washing time is needed moreover the higher quality of the washed bauxite is produced. The highest alumina content of the washed bauxite was 53.67 per cent with the alumina recovery was 89.66 per cent and the concentration ratio of 84.80 per cent was achieved within 20 minutes of washing time of the raw bauxite (Al2O3 48.36 per cent). The washed bauxite resulted from this research is suitable as a raw material for Bayer process.
