The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

The words ""Uncertainty"" and ""Risk"" pervade every discussion about mining exploration and investment. Perhaps these terms are subjectively understood by industry professionals, but objective portrayal of these concepts outside the industry is a woefully undeveloped science. This paper addresses current industry understanding and practice regarding quantitative risk assessment techniques, and provides examples of the application of three of these techniques. Probabilistic techniques for financial risk assessment are valuable adjuncts to conventional financial analysis, and address a range of issues not assessable by any other means. The value of whole-of-project probabilistic risk assessment is currently debatable for decision-making purposes, but is seen as important as a mechanism to focus attention to the critical issues that ultimately impact on project success. The dissection of project capital into risk and non-risk components provides valuable insights into risk characteristics not readily quantifiable in any other way. This technique also provides a framework for more objective ""what if?"" scenario evaluation and for the capital structure of resource projects. Finally, mechanisms for the valuation of undeveloped reserves are examined, and guidelines suggested. The importance of reliability in production cost estimates is highlighted and the impact of early development on reserve valuations is discussed. The importance of economics throughout all stages of the evaluation process is fundamental.

The steel industry is currently exploring hydrogen-enriched blast furnace operations as a means to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a need to investigate the gas permeability behaviour of mixed burdens comprising of lump and sinter as the current knowledge regarding their behaviour is limited, particularly with regards to hydrogen enrichment. In the present study, a series of interrupted softening and melting (S&M) under load tests were carried out in a hydrogen rich gas environment (~15 per cent) in the temperature range from 1000 to 1300°C by placing different types of ferrous ore layer including Newman Blend Lump (NBLL), sinter and sinter-NBLL mixed burden in between two coke layers. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was then used to scan the interrupted test samples. Scanned images were first analysed using an image processing workflow implemented in ImageJ and the material simulator GeoDict (v2022) to segment different phases such as coke, ferrous and void based on their grey scale values. A quantitative analysis was then performed on the segmented images to estimate the phase volume fraction as well as bed permeability. Bed void fraction thus obtained agreed well with the bed contraction data obtained from the S&M test. It was further noted that both ferrous layer void fraction and bed permeability decreased linearly with increasing temperature for all ore samples. The mixed burden voidage changed in a similar fashion to the sinter, demonstrating a high temperature interaction between the two materials

Today Hudson Bay Mining and SmeltingÆs 777 Project is the largest mining construction project under way in Canada. The project comprises six components: construction of the new 777 zinc-copper mine; construction of the new Chisel North zinc mine that will truck ore out from 600 metres below surface; expansion of the Flin Flon ore concentrator; expansion of the zinc plant to increase throughput by 15 per cent; a spill gas project that will reduce fugitive gas emissions by some 90 per cent; and infrastructure improvements including construction of a new electrical substation. Total investment in The 777 Project is over $US 260 million. Seven years ago, the Flin Flon, Manitoba-based company was fighting for its very existence. How does a company go from down-for-the-count to robust contender in just seven years? Contributing reasons are many, but all have their root in a process HBMS calls æTransformationÆ. It is transformation that has taken HBMS, a very traditional company, through a very non-traditional turnaround (Figure 1).

The ERMS Process was developed during four years of testwork by Austpac Gold NL to overcome the severe metallurgical problems of the ilmenite atWestport, in the South Island. These deposits have been known for about one hundred years. They were originally mined for gold, and only later attracted attention as a possible source of titanium minerals.   The resource is of world scale and may exceed 20 million tonnes of contained ilmenite. Similar deposits occur at Barrytown further south and together these areas would constitute an important opportunity for export-oriented mineral development, if a viable beneficiation technology were available. Further processing is essential, as the composition of the ilmenite is well below market specifications.

The issue of retrenchment is a topic of considerable relevance for the Papua New Guinea (PNG) mining, petroleum and gas industries. The unique environments in which Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) and other similar operations operate are likely to confront these industries with particular dilemmas that will require a range of investments to mitigate the problems associated with retrenchment and employment. This paper discusses retrenchment and employment in the PNG mining industry using the specific case study of PJV. The paper deals with the issue of employment and retrenchment of local workforces in the PNG context, which presents a serious challenge for the resources industry and the achievement of sustainable development objectives. The issue of future retrenchment of the workforce as a result of mine closure is an obvious challenge for both PJV and the Porgeran community at large, who have now come to rely upon both the employment opportunities presented through the mining. This paper examines these challenges and in doing so highlights some progress made by PJV. The paper also discusses downsizing, strategic practices and holistic approaches of retrenchment and employment. In doing so the paper highlights issues that have been overlooked in both academic and applied studies from global and local perspectives in the PNG mining sector. The latter sections articulate the relevance of the information provided by the case study in the wider context of retrenchment. The conclusion promotes a perspective that a great deal more investment will be required by all stakeholders to respond to the challenges of managing retrenchments and mine closure.

The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

"Although the role of texture has been increasingly recognised as a geometallurgical indicator of ore characteristics and their variability, the ability to appropriately quantify and correlate it with metallurgical performance remains an ongoing challenge. In this study, we propose the 3D characterisation and quantification of ore textures from drill core using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) with an appropriate image analysis methodology (grey level co-occurrence matrices, GLCM). This methodology has been specially customised for application of 3D XCT grey-scale volumes. This approach has potential as an online mine site analysis tool providing detailed 3D information on both quantitative texture and simple mineralogy.The approach is illustrated in this paper using drill core samples that were manually extracted from various rock types and textures representing the Nkomati Main Mineralized Zone (MMZ) sulfide nickel ore deposit. A preliminary classification of the samples was performed based on their particle size distribution after laboratory scale rod milling. Accompanying QEMSCAN analyses were also used to guide the interpretation of the grey-scale mineralogy and texture in the 3D XCT volumes. The resultant GLCM produced from quantitative 3D image analysis of the XCT volumes indicated sensitivity to ore variability and was able to capture a simple mineralogy and grain size distribution. Legislative requirements now demand employers navigate this complex terrain, but uncertainty often clouds effective management. The resource industry’s skills in managing physical hazards are showcased in their adaptability in this case study. Integrating the Critical Risk Management framework with organisational psychology, a mining company achieved a transformative breakthrough. They identified and assessed psychosocial hazards and established a sustained and risk based approach to managing these hazards within the workplace. This innovative approach encompasses strategic steps. With more than 50 000 recorded abandoned mines in Australia, effective management strategies are needed to prioritise and manage health, safety, environmental and socio-economic risks and opportunities. This paper reviews international leading practices for abandoned mine management and identifies key issues that need to be addressed in the Australian context. As well as the academic literature, this review draws on a 2008 global legacy site survey and forum in 2008, a Churchill Fellowship study of abandoned mines and the recently released æStrategic Framework for Management of Abandoned Mines in the Minerals IndustryÆ (MCMPR/MCA, 2010).A conceptual model was developed to identify the relationship between key issues affecting the management of abandoned mines in Australia. The conceptual model is then used in the development of a maturity chart which draws on risk management principles to provide leading practice guidance for abandoned mine managers, jurisdictions and stakeholders. Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870s-early 1880s, shortly after the initial discovery of mineralisation at what is now the Martha Mine. Indeed, early recovery problems associated with the Martha mineralisation led to the preferred development of ore bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, and Union to name a few. Gladstone Hill forms the basis of the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture managed by Au-Ag Resources Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd), and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Mine. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Mine, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with a number of vein sets throughout the tenement including the Gladstone Vein set, the Moonlight Lode and more recently along a north-easterly trend towards the historic Favona workings. A wide range of vein styles is apparent, ranging in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz and have been interpreted as representing multiple phases of emplacement. At shallower levels mineralisation is often hosted by vein clasts within vent breccias. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. Percentage levels of combined sphalerite-galena-(+/- chalcopyrite) have been intersected at depth however these have been gold poor to date. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area remains to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

Ore roasting has long been used for beneficiation and assay upgrading of different ores. In this process, which is mainly used for sulfide ores, the ore is heated to a high temperature. More specifically, it is a metallurgical process involving gas-solid reactions at elevated temperatures. Some types of Iron ore are weak in magnetic properties. Hematite, goethite and limonite are classified in this group. Unlike magnetite, which shows strong magnetic susceptibility, these ores are hard to beneficiate through magnetic separation route. Many researches have focused on gravity separation and flotation routes for upgrading these ores and these methods have also been utilised in the industry. One of the methods to whose industrial application less attention has been paid is magnetising roasting in which the non-magnetic iron ore is transformed to magnetite which is further beneficiated through magnetic separation. In this study, magnetising roasting tests have been performed on one goethite sample in order to check the feasibility of using this method for this specific ore in industrial scale. It is worth mentioning that high intensity magnetic separation have been performed on this sample before but the achieved results were not promising. Results have revealed that through magnetising roasting magnetite content of the ore could be increased from 1.7 per cent up to about 25 per cent. FeO content of the feed sample was increased from 1.03 per cent up to around 9.25 per cent. Also optimum size distribution for achieving the best results in magnetising roasting for this sample has been determined through this study. The best results were achieved when the ore size was 0–10 mm. The effect of coal ratio, time and temperature on the process have also be studied. A coal ratio of 5 per cent, time of 30 min and a temperature of 850°C were determined to be the optimum conditions. Finally, the technical feasibility of utilising magnetising roasting for this specific ore has been confirmed.

Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

Investigations were undertaken to assess the suitability of CSIROflotation methods for improving the efficiency of separation of heavyminerals in the monazite circuit at the Westralian Sands Limitedoperations at Capel, Western Australia. Flotation work was conducted on two plant samples. The first was a high-titanium product containing considerable amounts of zircon and silica as quartz and aluminosilicates, and the second was a low monazite/zircon material containing high levels of silica. A three-stage process including reverse flotation was developed totreat the first sample. In this process monazite, zircon, quartz, andaluminosilicates were selectively concentrated by flotation and screening to produce a titanium-rich product. In the first stage, an acid amine float, monazite, zircon, and some non-zircon silica were recovered and in the second stage, an alkaline amine float using a fluoride activator, more quartz and staurolite were floated. The titanium minerals were thus concentrated in the unfloated fraction. In the third stage, the titanium-rich flotation tail was screened at 250 ¦m to remove the remaining coarse aluminosilicates. In a single pass, the three-stage process yielded a TiO2 recovery of 64.0 per cent with the titanium-rich product assaying 70.3 per cent TiO2.

"This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. Different types of lump iron ore-bearing particles were investigated in terms of their raw material properties depending on their behaviour during reduction. To predict the reduction behaviour different types of lump iron ore and pellet brands were characterised by their mineral abundance, texture and pore size. The image processing software VisuMet was developed to semi-automate the evaluation of photomicrographs from polished sections of lumpy iron particles. The results were compared to the standard reducibility test after ISO 4695. The evaluation of lump iron ores is based on the simulation of the transformation of the different iron minerals due to their sequence of reducibility. The progress of the reduction front is simulated and the result is a degradation curve. Pellets were also investigated due to their different pore size distribution. The results indicate that the pore size influences the reducibility in addition to mineral abundance. The evaluation with VisuMet of the lump iron ore and pellet samples correlates with the reducibility provided by the ISO 4695 test. The determination of the mineral abundance by VisuMet is comparable to common point counting with a correlation coefficient of 99.67 per cent.CITATION:Kain-Bückner, B and Mali, H, 2017. An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

Reliable face support pressure is necessary for shield driven tunnels in cohesionless soils to prevent excessive ground movements. This paper presents experimental work on stability of a tunnel face using transparent soil models aiming to obtain magnitude of tunnel face minimum supporting pressure, failure pattern and extension of failed zone. A model tunnel was preinstalled in transparent soil which was supported at the face by means of water pressure. Tests were performed by reducing supporting pressure until collapse occurred. Model tests were sliced optically with laser sheet and images were captured for every decrement in tunnel supporting pressure. Later, these images were analysed by digital image correlation (DIC) and vector fi elds of incremental displacements were obtained. Values of minimum support pressures were given for different cover/diameter (C/D) ratios. Geometry of the failure zones depicted for different (C/D) values and appeared to be of chimney shape with a limited extension front of the face. A minimum support pressure was achieved with support pressures as low as 10 ± 1 per cent of the effective vertical stress at the tunnel axis. The stability of the tunnel face was related to the coefficient of active earth pressure with C/D ratio having a small effect on the magnitude of required pressure at collapse. In general, results of the study were in agreement with current knowledge of full-scale situations.
