An approximate phase diagram has been developed for the CaF2-CaC2 system, indicating a eutectic point at 1240°C, Ncac2 = 0.13, and no detectable solid solution in either phase. The liquidus line is shown to correspond to a simple c22- ion in solution. A thermo-chemical study of&apos; the reaction between carbon-saturated Ni-Ca alloys and CaC2-CaF2 liquids indicates that lhe Raoullian activity coefficient of CaC2 in dilute solution in Cap2 al 1500°C lies between 8 and 10. Some effects of the stabilily of Cap2-CaC2 solutions at high temperatures on electroslag remelting praclice are outlined. THE alkaline earth acetylides. MIIC2, have a reasonably high thermochemical stability at high temperature in the solid state,&apos; with the exception of magnesium, which forms an unstable acetylide at low temperatures (-500°C) and a carbide, Mg2C3, in the range 700&apos; to 1000°C. The acetylides of calcium and barium have been shown to have limited solubility in their respective chlorides,&apos; and further these solutions contain the acetylide as a C: ion.&apos; The equivalent magnesium solutions have not been studied. Although calcium "carbide" is used as a desulfuriz-ing reagent in steelmaking. and is possibly present as an acetylide-oxide phase in very basic electric arc practice slags, the acetylide ion appears to be substantially unstable in a silicate slag.* As a conse- *This instability arises from equilibria in the reaction: CaC2 + CO = (Ca0) + 3C where the low intrinsic solubility of CaC2 in silicate lattice, and the low activity of CaO in a silicate solution where CaO/Si02 < 1, combine to give a very small equilibrium concentration of CaC2 in solution in such silicate slags at temperatures in the region of I 500°c, even under carbon-saturated conditions. Under highly basic conditions, a liquid CaO-CaC2 phase may separate from the silicate system quence of this, the possibility that reactions involving CaC2 in silicate solutions are of importance to general steelmaking practice is remote. However, in operations involving a slag primarily based on a halide, or alkaline earth oxide, we must take into account the possibility that CaC2 will appear in quantities sufficient to significantly affect both the chemical and physical properties of the slag. The work outlined below presents a study of the CaF2-CaC2 system intended to provide sufficient data to allow an estimate of the importance of this system to electroslag remelting and welding practice. However, we should indicate at this point that there will be other processes, e.g., heat treatment, flux cleaning of castings, fused salt electrolysis, and so forth, where alkaline-earth halide fluxes are in contact with carbon, graphite, or carbides, and where halide-acetylide solutions must be taken into account. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Structural Studies. In view of the difficulty ex-perienced in handling CaC2 prepared from calcium turnings and propane gas at 700°C, it was decided to use solutions prepared directly in the equilibration apparatus, Fig. 1. The starting materials were: a) Ni-Ca-C alloy, prepared by adding calcium to liquid nickel held under calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible; b) calcium fluoride, prepared by fusing calcium fluoride powder (British Drug House "EXTRA PURE") calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible, in air, followed by electrolysis between graphite electrodes at 1 amp cm-2 density, for 10&apos; coulombs per g CaF2. This procedure decomposes the CaO produced by hydrolysis during the fusion step, replacing it by CaC2; Ca2+ + 2e-Ca*(l) Ca*(l) + 2C(gr)-(CaC2)caF2 O2- -2e-O*(g) O*(g) +C(gr)-CO(g) This results in a composition of between 2 and 5 wt pct CaC2 in CaF2. Fifty grams (in lumps) of this material were placed in a graphite crucible, together with Ni-Ca-C alloy (averaging 20 wt pct Ca), and the equilibration apparatus assembled. The alloy reacted with the crucible at high temperature to give CaC2, which dissolved in the calcium fluoride solution to give the desired composition. Cooling curves were plotted manually for these liquids, with rapid stirring and CaF2 seeding to minimize supercooling, and using a Pt/Pt 13 Rh thermocouple calibrated on the freezing points of nickel and copper. This gave a reproducibility of ±0.l°C. and an absolute accuracy of the thermocouple of ±l°C. An example curve is shown in Fig. 2, with the CaF2 end of the binary system in Fig. 3. The CaF2-CaC2 ingots were crushed, under dry nitrogen, and sampled for chemical analysis and X-ray examination. Analytical details are given in the Appendix. Powder diffraction data indicated that the only phases present in all samples examined were calcium fluoride and tetragonal (Types I and 111) calcium acetylide,4 with no evidence of solid solutions or compound formation. 2) Thermochemical Studies. The apparatus used to obtain activity data on CaC2 in these systems is shown in Fig. 4. It consists of an arrangement whereby the graphite crucible and its contents (CaF2-CaC2. STATISTICAL methods are becoming increasingly important for interpreting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor,&apos; written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.-Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science,, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should .they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such plants. † Many Useful Statistical Devices Available.-Many statistical methods of attack are available for the analysis of plant data. THIS investigation is concerned with the origin of the intercrystalline voids and cracks formed in metals and alloys subjected to stress at elevated temperature. There have been many suggestions in the recent literature relating to this problem. Greenwood&apos; suggested that the voids may be produced by vacancy condensation. Zener has stated that shear-stress relaxation across grain boundaries could initiate high tensile stresses at the regions blocking grain boundary slip and thereby cause the formation of cracks. Chang and Grant3 have described the formation of cracks at grain boundary triple points and have experimentally verified Zener&apos;s mechanism for the grain boundary regions in the vicinity of a triple point. Subsequent to the completion of this investigation, Gifkins4 developed a model which made use of Stroh&apos;s5 mechanism of fracturing to produce sub-microscopic fractures that subsequently grow by grain boundary slip. Chen and Machlin,6 in answer to Gifkins, described a model deduced from the present investigation, in which grain boundary slip provides both the stress to fracture at grain boundary jogs and the deformation required to separate fractured jog surfaces. The possibility of gas condensation to form intercrystalline voids and cracks is eliminated as a basic mechanism because such voids and cracks are developed in vacuum melted material containing minute amounts, if any, of gaseous impurities. In a theoretical evaluation of this problem, Machlin7 concluded that void nucleation by vacancy condensation during creep-rupture is improbable but that vacancy condensation on supercritical sized voids to produce growth is probable. This investigation was begun to evaluate the suggested mechanisms for intercrystalline fracture. In particular, in order to correlate vacancy supersaturation ratios produced in creep with those determined by Bal-luffi and Seigle8 as critical for , the nucleation of voids, specimens were obtained from the same heat of brass as used by the latter authors, through the courtesy of Dr. Seigle. The experiments conducted in this investigation fall into the following categories: 1) Brass—observation of voids produced under a variety of conditions, including creep under compression, to evaluate the mechanisms of void nucleation and growth. 2) Bicrystal experiments to check the mechanism of void nucleation deduced in this investigation. 3) Morphology of intercrystalline voids produced in a variety of metals. Each set of experiments will be described and discussed separately. Experimental Techniques A special creep-rupture test rack was constructed which made it possible to apply the stress to the specimen in a controlled atmosphere of inert gas, reducing gas, or vacuum. All the creep-rupture tests on a-brass (30 pct Zn) were conducted in nitrogen under a pressure slightly above atmospheric. Either dead weight loading or constant elongation rate loading could be applied with the load measured by means of a strain gage dynamometer. ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. Such hard alloys have great resistance to compression, but as a rule they had a very wide factor of safety in this

The effects of bedding plane orientation on the elastic constants and the yield strengths of three laminated rocks (one sandstone and two shales) and one isotropic rock (a limestone) were studied. The directional dependence of the elastic properties of these rocks was experimentally evaluated using a triaxial compression cell and auxiliary stress-strain measuring equipment. Symmetry of Poisson&apos;s ratios within the bedding plane suggested that horizontal isotropy exists, but the bedding planes do give rise to an appreciable difference between properties in the horizontal and vertical directions. For the three bedded rocks studied, Young&apos;s modulus was lower normal to bedding than along bedding. Yield strengths were determined at confining pressures from 0 to 12,000 psi in a triaxial compression cell. The rocks studied showed strength reductions as high as 40 per cent when the test specimen was oriented at 20°-30° to the bedding planes. The mechanical behavior of these rocks suggested that the rock properties of shear strength and/or coefficient of internal friction can vary with direction, depending on the particular rock tested. Tensile strengths were also measured and found to be lowest when failure occurred along bedding. This work shows that bedded formations exhibit sizable directional variations in both their elastic constants and yield strengths. It is suggested that these variations may be accounted for by using the "elastic laminate" model and the "variable coefficients" failure model. INTRODUCTION The nature of rock deformation at elevated pressures has been studied by many workers; papers by Handin,l,2 and Robinson3 illustrate the present state of knowledge. Most investigators have either chosen rocks which were as isotropic as possible (in order to avoid complications of data interpretation and analysis) or they have oriented their samples so that the effects of anisotropies (such as bedding planes) have been avoided. Of the studies performed, few were concerned specifically with mechanical anisotrop-ies. Griggs4 has presented limited data for specimens cut parallel, normal, and 45° to the bedding plane; he relates the strength anisotropy observed to the fabric (bedding) anisotropy. His tests were primarily concerned with large deformations (20 per cent strain); thus, no directional values of the elastic constants were reported. Handin has reported the results of similar experiments. Bott5has discussed rock strength anisotropies due to faults, cleavage, or bedding. He was concerned primari ly with determining the shear stress on such planes and did not mention the effect of friction. Jaeger6 later generalized Bott&apos;s work by taking friction into account and presented a limited theory for the failure of rocks having a "single plane of weakness", and also for rocks having a constant coefficient of friction, and a shear strength which varies with bedding plane orientation. Donath and Cohen,7 and Donathg have evaluated rock strengths from shale and slate specimens cut normal and parallel to bedding. A dependence of cohesive strength (7,) on the specimen orientation was also shown. Adler9 has also studied this problem and lists similar results. He assumes that all bedded rocks behave according to Jaeger&apos;s single-plane-of-weakness theory. Kalinin and Belorussov10 list results for strength tests parallel and perpendicular to bedding and use this information as a basis for hole deviation analysis. From the literature it is apparent that sedimentary rocks have been tested under widely varying conditions of stress; however, the assumption of isotropy is generally, but not always, made. Since geologic sedimentation often deposits sediments in very definite lavers.,. it seems that more svstema tic attention should be given to the possible effects of this natural bedding. Bedding, as used here, refers to visible regularities of grain size or orientation resulting from depositional processes. In technological studies on steel considerable emphasis has been placed on the identification of the foreign inclusions, testimony of which is adequately given in the metallographic literature covering methods for their identification. The outstanding accomplishment in this field is the scheme devised by Campbell, Comstock and Wohrman for identifying various oxides, sulfides, silicates and other constituents by systematic etching tests and microscopic examination.&apos; The time involved in carrying out this procedure has led to attempts to secure quicker methods, or at least to shorten the time required to secure essential information. An example of this is the use of dark field illuminatin,2 but when this was tried out by the authors it was found that cavities and pits on the polished surface appeared bright on a dark field and could not be distinguished from small glassy inclusions. Still another means is the Leitz Ultropak, an instrument equipped with optical units for the illumination of the specimen by reflected light to secure an effect similar to dark field illumination. The structures are made visible in exceedingly sharp details by utilizing the inherent properties of the samples, such as refractive index, absorption coefficients and reflection powers. We have had no experience with the Ultropak, but a recent paper by Benedicks and Löfquist3 describes methods for determining the refractive index of (Fe, Mn) O and MnS by the use of this equipment. Presumably this method would be subject to about the same limitations as dark field illumination, though the, feature added by Benedicks and Löfquist appears to offer great promise in inclusion identification.

An ideal theoretical model of a naturally fractured reservoir with a uniform fracture distribution, motivated by an earlier model by Warren and Root, has been developed. This model consists of a finite circular reservoir with a centrally located well and two distinct porous regions, referred to as matrix and fracture, respectively. The matrix has high storage, but low flow capacity; the fracture has low storage, but high flow capacity. The flow in the entire reservoir is unsteady state. The results of this study are compared with the results of the earlier models, and it has been concluded that major conclusions of Warren and Root are quite substantial. Furthermore, an attempt has been made to study critically other analytical methods reported in the literature. In general, it may be concluded that the analysis of a naturally fractured reservoir from pressure transient data relies considerably on the degree and the type of heterogeneity of the system; the testing procedure and test facilities are sometimes as important. Nevertheless, under favorable conditions, one should be able to calculate in-situ characteristics of the matrix-fracture system, such as pore-volume ratio, over-all capacity of the formation, total storage capacity of the porous matrix, and some measure of matrix permeability. INTRODUCTION The analysis of flow and buildup tests for obtaining in-situ characteristics of oil and gas reservoirs has received considerable attention in the past decade. Most of the available techniques result in reliable conclusions in macroscopically homogeneous reservoirs or in the homogeneous reservoirs with only certain types of induced and/or inherent heterogeneity (such as wellbore damage, etc.). In general, the greater the degree of heterogeneity, the less the reliability of the information deduced from the pressure transient data. A commonly encountered heterogeneous system is a naturally fractured reservoir where two types of distinct porosities occur in the same formation. The region containing finer pores may have high storage and low flow capacities. This is called the matrix. The remaining region may have high flow capacity with low storage. The latter region is generally the set of interconnecting fractures and fissures of the rock, and for this reason it is called the fracture. Ordinarily, we wish to obtain the permeability and porosity of each region and perhaps the frequency of the fracture distribution in a reservoir. Such information is necessary for reservoir engineering. Other information, such as wellbore damage, will be useful in evaluating possible remedial work for such fields. Few authors have suggested theories to aid in calculating the in-situ characteristics of a naturally fractured reservoir similar to what we have described above. Pollardl suggested that a naturally fractured reservoir contained three distinct regions: a damaged or an improved region surrounding the wellbore, and the two remaining regions the same as described earlier. He suggested that the flow was taking place from the tight matrix into the highly conductive fractures, then into the we wllbore region and finally into the well column. He concluded that the average pressure buildup in each of these distinct regions can be expressed approximately in terms of an exponential decay function of time. He also hypothesized that the decay coefficients for each of these functions were significantly different from each other; consequently, each of these functions became dominant in turn, in the process of pressure buildup. Thus, by a proper graphic plot of the logarithm of wellbore pressure differences vs buildup time, each of these functions could be determined (see Fig. 1). The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined because it is used both as a rock term and as a particle size term. Actually most persons using the term clay realize that it has a double meaning and in most instances define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that compose it so that the definition has to be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine-grained material composed largely of a limited group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. Many definitions state that a clay has the property of plasticity when wet, but some clays are not plastic, i.e., halloysite and flint clay; however, most clay materials are plastic when wet. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on some grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 microns as the maximum size. The Wentworth scale&apos; defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 microns. Grim&apos; has found it convenient to use the term clay material for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material and in this way can include clays, shales, or argillites, and some soils if they are argillaceous. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, still the term is generally understood by all who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material and has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. In order to understand better the relationships between the clays and their uses, a brief discussion of the structure, chemical composition, and identification of the clay minerals is given. Mineralogical Composition of Clays Clays are composed of certain groups of hydrous aluminum, magnesium, and iron silicates that may contain calcium, potassium, and other ions, which are called the clay minerals, and other minerals of variable composition, which are nonclay minerals. Both clay minerals and nonclay minerals influence the properties of a clay material. In order to understand the relationship between clay minerals and the properties of a clay material, a short summary of the structure and composition of clay minerals is necessary. Any scheme of classification tends to impose a certain rigidity and as new and additional data become available it is necessary to revise classifications. Brindley3 has discussed the classification and structural mineralogy of clays in very lucid fashion and chose a classification based on structural features and chemical composition. Grim2 proposed a tentative classification which is based on the structural attributes of the various clay minerals. This classification is relatively simple and workable, and is shown as follows: I. IN PREVIOUS papers,1 the author has reported the results of experiments on the straining in tension of a single crystal test piece, about 0.6 in. long, of vacuum-melted electrolytic iron containing 1.8 per cent. of silicon. The crystal was originally in the "as cast" condition, and was stressed slowly along a tetragonal axis so that slipping along conjugate gliding planes finally transformed the original cylindrical portion into a pair of fracture wedges. One of these fracture wedges was sectioned along the stress axis in a plane at right angles to the edge of the wedge. A metallographic study of this plane of -section led to the conclusion that slip had taken place in the (111) direction along (112) planes making a V shape with the stress axis. The present paper describes the results of scratch-hardness tests conducted on the same section, in order to determine the distribution of strain hardness therein, followed by annealing, and considers the resulting variations in hardness. These observations supplement those made by Krivobok2 on similar material reduced 25 per cent. by hammering (i. e., by impact) in the cold. In order to investigate ageing effects, two small crystals of the same alloy were also tested.

The maintenance cost, or renewal cost, in any preparation plant is a large item of expense and reflects in the total cost of producing and preparing the ton of coal. It is given constant study to the end that ways and means of controlling and reducing this proportion of the total cost may be developed. Study of this item of cost has proceeded along usual lines, which are: proper functioning of the maintenance organization; systematic and thorough inspection to prevent breakdonns; the making of repairs before renewals are needed; maintenance work done thoroughly the first time, instead of patching, study of parts needing frequent renewal or repairs or conditions resulting in delays, thorough knowledge of cost by the mall responsible for maintenance; and the use of special equipment and materials. This paper is to deal with special equipment and materials to reduce the maintenance cost hut before going into that I want to express an opinion on the general subject. Maintenance Organization Usually maintenance is taken care of by a group of men who perform their work on the off shift. The work is arranged by the operating official who should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance, so that materials needed may be made up for the particular job and waste of time in looking up materials be prevented. To perfect the maintenance organization, all operating attendants should be thoroughly trained to be familiar with all working parts of their equipment, to make a thorough inspection and to write out the slip for the work required. This requires job analysis, but it is worth the effort, because the attendant usually is better informed than anyone else about his particular equipment. The operating official can judge the scope of the work to direct the repair and to have material ready. Lubrication is an important item in maintenance, and a subject by itself. Usually the breaker oiler is designated to perform this task. This man should be picked for his ability and put in line for promotion to machinist. He should be trained as an inspector, as he is constantly visiting most parts of the breaker and has an opportunity to observe needed maintenance. The first thing is to lay out maintenance work and arrange to have it done; the next is to check the work and see that it has been properly done. This check should be made by the operating official, and through the attendant. The cost statement showing the various items of maintenance cost is not often understood by the man in direct charge. Study of this item of cost has proceeded along usual lines, which are: proper functioning of the maintenance organization; systematic and thorough inspection to prevent breakdonns; the making of repairs before renewals are needed; maintenance work done thoroughly the first time, instead of patching, study of parts needing frequent renewal or repairs or conditions resulting in delays, thorough knowledge of cost by the mall responsible for maintenance; and the use of special equipment and materials. This paper is to deal with special equipment and materials to reduce the maintenance cost hut before going into that I want to express an opinion on the general subject. Maintenance Organization Usually maintenance is taken care of by a group of men who perform their work on the off shift. The work is arranged by the operating official who should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance, so that materials needed may be made up for the particular job and waste of time in looking up materials be prevented. To perfect the maintenance organization, all operating attendants should be thoroughly trained to be familiar with all working parts of their equipment, to make a thorough inspection and to write out the slip for the work required. This requires job analysis, but it is worth the effort, because the attendant usually is better informed than anyone else about his particular equipment. The operating official can judge the scope of the work to direct the repair and to have material ready. Lubrication is an important item in maintenance, and a subject by itself. Usually the breaker oiler is designated to perform this task. This man should be picked for his ability and put in line for promotion to machinist. He should be trained as an inspector, as he is constantly visiting most parts of the breaker and has an opportunity to observe needed maintenance. The first thing is to lay out maintenance work and arrange to have it done; the next is to check the work and see that it has been properly done. This check should be made by the operating official, and through the attendant. The cost statement showing the various items of maintenance cost is not often understood by the man in direct charge. THE quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The variation in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the British Iron and Steel Institute.1 From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots. GENERAL THEORY OF SEGREGATION The basic cause of segregation lies in the fact that the impurities are less soluble in solid than in liquid iron. The solid that forms from the impure liquid is more nearly pure than the liquid itself. If solidification proceeds slowly enough, or if the liquid and solid phases are maintained in contact with one another for a sufficient time, a condition of equilibrium is set up, which may be represented by a phase diagram. A great landslide occurred on June 23, 1925, in the valley of Gros Ventre River, about 35 miles south of Yellowstone National Park (Fig. 1). The relations of the north-easterly dipping rock formations of the slide scarp and of the dam formed by the slide are shown in the diagrammatic cross-section of the valley (Fig. 2). This generalized section is based on unpublished maps and notes by Eliot Rlackwelder, in the files of the IT. S. Geological Survey. Heavy rains and melting snow in the Gros Ventre Mountains had saturated clay layers in the Carboniferous strata, which dip toward the valley at angles of 18" to 21°, consequently an enormous mass of rock at the end of the north spur of Sheep Mountain became loosened and, on the afternoon of June 23, slid suddenly down into the valley. In 1917 Haighl presented evidence that under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress metals may fail at lower stresses than if the corrosion is prior to the cyclic stress. In 1926 the author, while investigating the cooling effect of water on the fatigue resistance of metals, found that under these conditions steel specimens fail at stresses far below the endurance limit.2 (By "endurance limit" is here meant the fatigue limit obtained with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and corrosive influences.) This led to an investigation (at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md.) of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. This investigation may be divided into three parts. The first part was a general survey of the conditions necessary to cause complete failure under corrosion and cyclic stress of relatively high frequency. The entire process by which metals fail under these conditions was called LLcorrosion-fatigue." Corrosion-fatigue limits" for a large number of metals were determined and the relationships of these limits to chemical composition, heat treatment and physical properties were established. The conclusion was reached that corrosion-fatigue is due to the accelerating influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Results of this part of the investigation were presented in five papers.*-= The second part of the investigation was a preliminary study of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Each experiment was conducted in two stages. The first was a corrosion stage in which the specimen was corroded under cyclic stress; the second was a fatigue stage, in which the previously corroded specimen was tested (without further corrosion) to determine its fatigue limit. Most mineral deposits change as they are followed downward on their dips. Some of these changes are due to primary arrangement; different ores were precipitated at different depths when the deposits were formed. Other changes are due to weathering or secondary enrichment. The chief changes resulting from weathering, in the main, are understood and standard changes are recognized. The processes are relatively simple. They take place at ordinary temperatures and pressures and can be duplicated in the laboratories. Moreover, there are thousands of deposits available for study, because the processes take place near the surface where the development of mines is begun. The changes due to primary arrangement of the deposits of the metals are not so well understood. Deposition has taken place at higher temperatures and our knowledge of the chemistry of the processes leaves much to he desired. Very few experimental data are available. The deposits, moreover, offer fewer examples because many mines are not developed to depths where the changes can be studied and a change to unprofitable material usually results in stopping work. Most students of ore deposits now accept, as confirmed, the hypothesis that nearly all lodes and related deposits were formed by solutions originating in intrusive igneous masses. Outward from these masses, the deposits at many places are grouped in zones and the arrangement noted from the intrusions outward are commonly the reverse of the changes noted from the surface downward in a single lode. A study of the changes in groups of deposits, from the parent intrusion outward, will throw light on the changes to be expected in a single lode downward. Recause the changes in series of deposits from the intrusive outward may all be observed near the surface, where more data are available, it is possible to increase the number of examples many fold and to apply the statisttical method of study with greater confidence of avoiding error. It is not everywhere possible to identify the parent igneous body to which a group of ore deposits are related. Several kinds of criteria are available; certain groups are superior to others. The Cornucopia gold quartz veins form a parallel vein system traversing meta-morphic and granodioritic rocks. Field and petrographic evidence suggests that inetasomatism has played an important role both in the emplacement of the grano-diorite and in the formation of the veins. Structurally the veins appear to be related to the major tectonic features of the Wallowa Mountains and to be narrow shear zones rather than filled fissures. Petrographic studies indicate a complex history of formation starting from initial alteration along fractures or joints followed by recurrent fracturing and a quartz-forming stage, and closing with continued shearing and microbrecciation, which permitted the upward percolation of the later ore-forming solutions. The precipitation of ore minerals from these solutions formed ore shoots. Postmineral effects include the injection of Tertiary basaltic dikes, a shght amount of cross faulting, and some movement along the planes of the veins as well as oxidation. Introduction Cornucopia is in the southeastern part of the rugged Wallowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon. It was founded over 50 years ago following the discovery of its system of gold quartz veins. The major veins are roughly parallel and dip into the western side of Pine Valley, which drains the southern slope of the range. Previous operations had cut the upper portion of four major veins with two tunnels over 1000 ft. apart, when the present operating company drove a third tunnel, called the Coulter, at the level of the valley over 1000 ft. lower to intersect the most easterly major vein at over 6200 ft. from the portal. General Geology of District The oldest rocks in the vicinity are metamorphosed sediments and volcanics. These, for the most part, are presumably Mesozoic in age, although some black argillites outcropping along East Pine Creek are considered to be Permian.l,2 These rocks have been deformed and metamorphosed in general to hornfels at the close of the Jurassic.
