For permanent structure underground, where rock is not competent, support usually consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, temporary supports in the form of timber or steel are often needed during construc-tion. Although the history of rock bolting is relatively short—50 years— their use has become widespread in general engineering construction as well as mining. This profusely illustrated and detailed study covers a broad range in the field of rock belting: from the behavior of rock and bolts including rock properties, masses, and structure; mathematical formulae for rock bolt applications; through analysis of various operations and descriptions of the bolts themselves. Rock construction is one of the oldest of the engineering arts and its origin is lost in antiquity. From the days when early man decided that he wanted to improve the natural caves which he was using for shelter and protection or made a river crossing by placing rocks to form a ford or causeway, we have had structures made of rock. It is not too much to say that rock in situ as a structural material forms part of every major engineering undertaking. Rock bolting is one means whereby the inherently good characteristics of rock in situ are preserved and used to the best advantage and the bad characteristics ameliorated. In many cases the latter are accentuated by construction processes used. Rock bolting, as with other rock construction techniques, is only just beginning to emerge from being an art. Consequently, its theory and practice is still more descriptive than mathematical. ROCK BOLTING In underground excavations, where the rock is not competent, support is provided. For the permanent structure, this generally consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, support may be needed during construction before the concrete can be placed, and conventionally this consists of timber or steel support in the form of ribs, struts, and lagging. Alternatively, rock bolts may be used. Although their use dates back over 50 years, it is only in recent years that rock bolts have become widely used, not only in mining but in general engineering construction. A rock bolt is a steel bar which is inserted in a hole drilled in rock. The end away from the rock face has a device which permits it to be firmly an- chored in the hole and the projecting end is fitted with a plate which bears against the rock surface. The bolt is placed in tension between the anchor and the plate, thereby exerting a compressive force on the rock. The essential feature of a rock bolt is that it is placed in tension. This distinguishes it from anchor bars which are grouted into holes in rock, but which are not prestressed. The difference between an anchor bar and a rock bolt when the rock bolt is grouted in is analogous to the difference between the reinforcement in ordinary reinforced concrete and in prestressed reinforced concrete. The view that rock bolts only pin or nail blocks or slabs of rock which are loose to the sounder rock behind them is erroneous. Rock bolts are useful for this purpose and have been so used for a long time. However, the term rock bolting, as used here, means the designed use of rock bolts to reinforce and develop the rock around an excavation into a structural entity which can competently play its part in a structure such as a powerhouse or a mine installation. Rock bolts behave quite differently than steel ribs. They can be installed at the working face directly after blasting and within a short space of time can be exerting a stabilizing pressure on the loosened rock surface. This early installation not only partially restores loosened blocks of rock to their original unloosened positions, but also it prevents the gradual relaxation or loosening of the decompression zone behind the new rock face. In contrast, steel ribs generally use timber blocks, wedges, and lagging between the ribs and the irregular rock surface. The timber is relatively compressible, and loosened blocks of rock must move outwards an appreciable distance before any load builds up on the steel ribs. Also, the ribs may settle as the foot blocks and foundation become compressed. Hence, it may take several days or weeks before the rock has moved sufficiently to make the steel ribs carry an effective load.

Diffusion rates of manganese, aluminum, titanium, and tungsten in nickel were measured at temperatures between 1100° and 1300°C. Activation energies, Q, and values of the frequency factor, Do, were calculated for each system. Values of Q were found to be within 15 pet of that for self-diffusion of nickel in agreement with present theories of diffusion. ONE of the most interesting problems in diffusion concerns factors governing the order of diffusion coefficients of various solutes in a common solvent metal at low solute concentrations. An early suggestion by Rhines and Mehl' was that diffusion coefficients might each approach that of the self-diffusion coefficient of the solvent itself. Later Thomas and Birchenall' pointed out correlations between the order of the diffusion coefficients and the freezing point depressions of the solvent by the various solutes. Other correlations have been sought. To settle this question it seems likely that much more data will be needed and, in particular, data collected at low solute concentrations. This type can be obtained by special analytical techniques as well as by use of radioactive tracers. The following study was made of diffusion of manganese, aluminum, titanium, and tungsten in a common solvent, nickel, at relatively low solute concentrations: 1—Production of alloys of nickel with manganese, aluminum, titanium. and tungsten at concentrations of the order of 1 atomic pet. 2—Use of pressure-welded diffusion couples in cylindrical form. 3—Diffusion anneals in the temperature range of 1100" to 1300°C. 4—Lathe sectioning of the diffused couples. 5—Spectrophotometric analyses of lathe turnings for the solute being studied. 6—Calculation of the diffusion coefficient for each of the solutes as a function of temperature. 7—Interpretation of results with current theories of diffusion. Experimental Work Materials—Two types of nickel were used in this research. The grade designated as Vacuum melted Mond nickel was used for all diffusion systems except the Mn-Ni system for which the Vacuum melted electrolytic nickel was used. Analyses of the two grades are given in Table I. The manganese used in making alloys was 99.9 + pet pure, aluminum 99.99 pet pure, titanium 99.9 pet pure, and tungsten of C.P. grade powder. Alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting in vacuo or under a low pressure of argon. After melting, all heats except those of nickel-manganese were poured into a cylindrical copper mold 3 in. long and 1 in. ID. In the case of nickel-manganese, the alloys were solidified in the melting crucible. For nickel-aluminum heats alumina crucibles were used and for all other heats, zirconia crucibles.

During an investigation in which the solubility relations of the phases in Muntz metal (60 per cent. copper, 40 per cent. zinc) were under study, certain phenomena that had no immediate connection with the main problem were observed, which were thought sufficiently interesting to study further. Because of lack of time, only a preliminary survey was made of two of these; namely, the cleavage structure developed under certain conditions in a 60:40 brass and abnormal grain growth in this alloy. Cleavage Structure in Heat-treated Muntz Metal Carpenter noted many years ago that cold-working a brass of the Muntz metal type, which had been quenched previously from within the beta field, results in a partial breakdown of the supersaturated beta solution and the precipitation of the solute (the alpha solution) in the cleavage planes of the beta grains. This manner of rejection of a solute from a metastable solid solution is not peculiar to this particular alloy, for among others, it occurs in the cold-working of certain austenitic steels; for example, the austenitic nickel steels. In these ferrous alloys, cold deformation produces a partial decornposition of the austenite, with the formation of martensitic "needles" and zigzags in the austenitic poly-hedra. It is interesting to note that while the two solid solutions— austenite and quenched Muntz metal— are metastable and in their mode of decomposition behave quite alike when deformed in the cold, the metastability of each results from a different cause; viz., that of the austenite from the fact that it is a supercooled solution (its solvent. gamma iron, at ordinary temperatures is below its normal stable range whereas the metastability of the quenched Muntz metal is the result of supersaturation. When a 60:40 brass is quenched from above 800" C.—that is, from within the field where the beta phase alone is stable—this solution is retained practically intact and the alloy so cooled is found to consist almost entirely of polyhedra of this solution with only a little alpha present ordinarily at the boundaries of the beta grains—the result of a slight

AT the present time there are four base metals being used for automotive bearing alloys. Of course there are numerous variations in the amounts of alloying elements added to each base metal and nearly all of these alloys have the conventional, if not classical, duplex structure; that is, they are composed of a hard constituent embedded in a soft matrix. The well-known theory is that the former will wear well, while the latter will be plastic enough to allow the bearing to be broken in and conform to the contours of the shaft. The requirements of the modern bearing have been most aptly described by W. M. Corse: In order to meet the engineering demands of today a good bearing metal must be able to carry the weight of the shaft and stand up under steady or suddenly applied loads, or even blows in some types of service. A certain amount of plasticity is desired to compensate for minute irregularities in the shaft or bearing surface, and to permit yielding, thereby avoiding dangerous stresses in bearing and shaft and preventing overheating and rapid wear of parts. Less plasticity is required in a bearing metal if the surfaces of bearings and journals are machined accurately, aligned, and kept in alignment. It is desirable, of course, that a bearing metal have a low coefficient of friction. Under most operating conditions the friction depends on the unit pressure of the bearing, the speed, the temperature, and the properties of the lubricant. A good bearing metal must have a low rate of wear to reduce the necessity for frequent replacements, and adjustment of the bearings. It must wear more rapidly, however, than the journal or shaft running on it, because replacement of the journal or shaft is more difficult and costly than replacement of the hearing., The hardness of, the bearing alloy is a property closely related to several of the foregoing. With a duplex microstructure, the measurement of hardness with any of the usual commercial devices means little. The Bierbaum method of measuring the hardness of the individual constituents was developed to, fill this need. THE experiments described below are a continuation of work on the graphitization of cast iron conducted as part of the program of funda-mental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. In previous work it was found that melting in hydrogen increased the amount of eutectic and in others i produced al marked changes in the size of the graphite flakes. These effects seemed to be III sulphur and manganese present in the material studied. The electrolytic copper refinery at Copper Cliff, Ont., is operated by the Ontario Refining Co., Ltd. The associated companies behind the enterprise are the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd.; The American Metal Co.; The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.; and Ventures, Ltd. The plant was the outgrowth of the rapid development of copper resources in the nickel-copper ores of the Frood and other great mines in the Sudbury district, and of the desire to have all primary production units grouped together as closely as possible. The refinery is near the intersection of the Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is about one mile south of The International Nickel Company's smelter at Copper Cliff. The standard-gage track systems of the refinery and of the smelter are connected by a standard-gage timber railroad trestle that crosses the railway and the highway by means of steel girder spans. The Canadian National Railway has access to the plant by means of this trestle and the nickel company's tracks, so that the refinery has connections with both the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National railways, as well as a direct connection with The International Nickel Company's smelter, from which the bulk of the copper to be refined is hauled by the latter's electric locomotives. Buildings The refinery (Fig. 1) covers approximately 60 acres, enclosed by an unscalable chain-link fence. The main buildings have a content of 23,000,000 cu. ft., with a total roof area of approximately 600,000 sq. ft. and near them are the substation, cooling pond and main standard-gage track system (Fig. 2). A ladder track for car storage extends 1200 ft. south of the coal-pulverizer tracks and the scale house is on this spur. The intake and pumphouse for fresh water supply are at Kelly Lake, about 3000 ft. south of the plant. Owing to the severity of the winters, when temperatures of from 20" to 40' below zero are to be expected, the building of this refinery involved a number of problems in insulation, layout, ventilation, etc., which were

The term " Anthracite Coal-Field " is generally used to refer to a comparatively small territory lying in the eastern-central part of Pennsylvania. This territory includes about 3,300 sq. miles of area, located chiefly in five counties in which anthracite-mining is the dominant industry. Although an area of 3,300 sq. miles is embraced in the region, less than one-fifth of this area, or only 484 sq. miles, is underlain by workable coal-seams. Moreover, this prorluctive portion is not a continuous area, but consists of a number of detached basins. These are known as the Northern, containing 176 sq. miles; Eastern-Middle, containing 133 sq. miles; Southern, containing 181 sq. miles; and western-Middle,containing 194 sq. miles. From the standpoint of business and trade, the region is divided into three districts, known as (1) the Wyoming, which includes the Northern field and the small Bernice basin; (2) the Lehigh region, which includes all of the Eastern Middle field and that part of the Southern field east of Tamaqua; and (3) the Schuylkill region, which includes the WesL ern-Middle field and that part of the Southern field west of Tamaqua. The relative commercial importance of these districts at the present time is shown by the coal-shipments as given in the following table :

The construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area is postulated. The questions (1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and (2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability are answered in a case study of 97,000 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico. Measurements on mineral wealth and geologic variables of 243 cells were made. The geologic variables, valued in counts, percentages and lengths, quantified the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. The cells of explored area must be allotted the value class indicated by their cumulative production and estimate reserves (given well-defined geological relationships in a mineral wealth area), and a discriminant and classification analysis must be performed in which probabilities of the cell belonging to each of the value groups are generated as a function of the geologic variables. This determines whether high value cells can be distinguished from low value cells by their geology as well as indicating those cells misclassified by the model into a higher value group than warranted by their known mineral wealth. The second use of the model is for extrapolation. It is demonstrated how geologic information on an explored area can be utilized in guiding exploration in an unexplored area. Exploration decisions can be predicted on explicitly determined measures of uncertainty (the probabilities). SUMMARY This study postulates the construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area. Such a model will distinguish those cells deserving further exploration on the basis of their geology: The basic postulates of this study are as follows: v = Q(R,S,F,A) P(V) = G(R,S,F,A,V), where V = a measure of mineral wealth P(V) = the probability of occurrence of V R = age and type of rock F = rock fracturing A =age of igneous activity and contact relationships. There are really two questions to be answered: 1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and 2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability? In order to answer these questions, an area of about 97,000 square miles situated chiefly in Arizona and New Mexico was selected as a case study. This case study area was divided into 243 cells, each 20 miles square, and measurements were made on mineral wealth and geologic variables. Crude geologic variables valued in counts, percentages and lengths are constructed to reflect the above postulated variables. These measurement variables thus provide quantified values defining the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and the multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. Given the availability of an area that is well explored and upon which the relationships of mineral wealth to geology can be adequately defined, there are two ways in which the analysis outlined in this paper can prove beneficial. First, the cells of the explored area must be allotted the value class indicated by their cumulative production and estimated reserves, and a discriminant and classification analysis must be performed in which probabilities of the cell belonging to each of the value groups are generated as a function of the geologic variables. IRON-COBALT alloys in the range of 35-50 pct cobalt are of interest in the electrical industry because they possess the highest magnetic saturation of any magnetic material known.1,2 The magnetic saturation induction of the 35 pct alloy is 24,200 gausses, compared to 21,600 for pure iron (Fig I). This difference is significant in electrical apparatus, where weight or space is at a premium. Saturation values higher than that for iron can be attained up to about 70 pct Co but economics restrict the use to as low a cobalt content as possible without sacrifice of saturation. Fig 2 shows the iron-cobalt equilibrium diagram. Up to the present time, two factors have retarded the use of iron-cobalt alloys in the electrical industry for magnetic purposes.† One is the high cost of cobalt ($1.50 per pound) and the other is the inherent brittleness of the binary iron-cobalt alloys. Straight iron-cobalt alloys up to 25 pct cobalt are ductile and easy to process to thin sheet or strip by conventional methods of hot and cold rolling, but the alloys containing higher percentages of cobalt, including those for which the saturation magnetization is a maximum (35 to 40 pct), are increasingly brittle with increasing cobalt, at least up to 50 pct, and are consequently difficult to process, either hot or cold. Work by White and Wah13 indicated that iron-cobalt alloys could be made ductile by alloying with vanadium, and after quenching the alloys (vanadium up to about 4 pct) were found to be cold rollable to very thin gauges. With this as a background, we resumed our work on these alloys with the objective of developing methods for economical commercial production of wide strip. For this purpose we have concentrated on the 35 pct alloy in order to obtain the highest possible saturation value. Experiments were carried out on many alloy additions to the iron-cobalt alloys and on the response of these compositions to heat treatments. This work finally culminated in a commercially producible iron-cobalt alloy which has been named Hiperco. * MATERIALS STUDIED AND PROCEDURE Binary alloys of iron and cobalt in the range of 35 pct cobalt are difficult to hot work (by forging or rolling) without such additions as C, Mn, Si, V, Cr, Mo, W or perhaps others. Another beneficial effect of such additions is that they in-crease to a greater or less extent the strangely low electrical resistivity of these alloys (about 10 microohms per cm3

The efficiency of the reverberatory furnace operation in producing. slags of 1020 copper content depends on the mixing and flow conditions in the bath. Radioactize-tmcer tests have indicated the jkaction of bath volume engaged inflow and the mixing conditions in the bath. The factors controlling the flow pattern of slag have been classified as laminar transfer flow, natrsral convection, and flou, due to the rapid addition or removal of slag.. Similarity criteria for model studies have been developed. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper begins with the smelting of either flotation concentrates, or direct-smelting ores which have been partially roasted to calcines. These materials are generally smelted in a reverberatory furnace, Fig. 1, and separate into two liquid phases, a sulfide matte and an iron silicate slag. he matte is tapped and subsequently reduced to metallic copper in a converter, while the reverberatory slag is usually discarded without any further treatment. Molten slag from the converting operation is returned intermittently to the reverberatory in order to recover its high copper content (1 to 3 pct Cu). The reverberatory furnace is about 115 ft long by 30 ft wide. In general, the solid charge is fed at intervals through openings along the sides of the roof and forms sloping banks from which the molten materials trickle down into the bath; the charge banks extend over a length of about 70 ft from the firing wall. The depth of the slag and matte layers varies from smelter to smelter; in the Noranda furnaces, the slag depth is 24 to 30 in., while the depth of matte at the taphole is about 20 in. Apart from smelting, the functions of the reverberatory are to recover most of the copper content in the converter slag by physical and chemical interaction with the furnace bath, and to provide adequate time for optimum separation between matte and slag. The efficiency of these operations depends on the mixing and flow conditions in the bath and is reflected on the copper losses in the slag. In the present study, the reverberatory furnace is considered as an open-channel chemical reactor and the driving forces for material transport through the bath are examined by means of flow and mathematical models. FLOW CONDITIONS IN THE REVERBERATORY FURNACE To facilitate the study of mixing conditions in continuous-flow reactors, two idealized patterns of flow have been accepted by workers in this field.' The term "backmix" flow is used to describe complete and instantaneous mixing in the reactor (perfect mixing); all particles have the same chance of leaving the system, independently of their time of entrance, and the fluid is uniform in composition throughout the vessel. On the other hand, "plug" flow, or "piston" flow, assumes that a fluid element moves through the reactor without overtaking or mixing with fluid entering at an earlier or later time. In addition to the two idealized patterns of flow, "deadwater" flow accounts for that portion of the fluid which is moving so slowly that it may be assumed to be stagnant. According to the definition by evensppiel,' the cut-off point between active and stagnant fluid may be taken as material which stays in the vessel for a period twice the mean residence time. The flow patterns in real vessels may be approximated by a combination of the above flows. Thus, the vessel is assumed to consist of interconnected flow regions with various modes of flow existing between them. The flow pattern may be determined directly from the flow paths of fluid through the essel. -However, the difficulty of obtaining and interpreting such information has led to the alternate approach of determining the residence time distribution of fluid elements by means of stimulus-response studies. The stimulus is provided by introducing a tracer in the inlet stream and the response by the record of the change in tracer concentration in the exit stream from the reactor. Such tests have been conducted in glass tank furnaces using either chemical7"9 or radioactive tracers1'-'' and, in one case, experiments have been reported for a metallurgical furnace.'"

INTRODUCTION The principal object of this paper is to present data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although same brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product.

THE theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = K MM/R2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C. G. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. GRAVITY AND LEVEL SURFACES Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration. In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm./sec 2) and less commonly merely as centimeter-gram-second units (C. G. S.). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as "the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it commonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

THE object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the "bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a compre-hensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific varia-bles, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this "new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grind-ing from the standpoint of set and induced variables, with emphasis on the latter.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of lithium-fluoride single crystals stressed in compression at room temperature have been studied. In as-cleaved specimens the stress-strain curves were variable; two types of {110} fractures were observed in the vicinity of kink bands. The stress-strain curves of annealed crystals were reproducible; {100} cracks formed which propagated along the (100) and (110) planes. The deformation and fracture characteristics were affected by quenching and X-ray irradiation. STUDY of the mechanical behavior of nonmetallic materials has received considerable impetus in recent years because of the need to overcome the problem of brittleness before the refractory properties of nonmetallics can be fully exploited. Ionic crystals provide a convenient and simplified starting point from which to study the deformation and fracture processes in nonmetallic materials. Early investigations of the mechanical behavior of non-metals were restricted largely to determinations of the crystallographic indices of the cleavage and fracture planes and the glide and twinning elements. Until recently, only occasional systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of non-metals have been made; and investigations of the forces necessary to initiate plastic deformation and the factors which affect the flow characteristics have been restricted largely to studies of sodium chloride'-7 , magnesium oxides-l3 and lithium fluoride. 14-22 Fracture studies on alkali halide and metal oxide single crystals have been limited despite the fact that these materials have a number of advantages for fracture studies. Because they are transparent, the cracks which form can be viewed in three dimensions instead of in two dimensions as in metals. Also, they exhibit stress birefringence under polarized illumination, which enables the internal stress pattern and, therefore, the distribution of dislocations to be examined in the vicinity of the fracture. Early workers1-4 have shown that ionic crystals with a cubic structure fracture in tension along the (100) plane normal to the applied stress. These fractures were brittle at room temperature and propagated very rapidly across the cross section of the crystal. More recently, Stokes, Johnston, and Lil0 have studied crack formation in compressed magnesium-oxide single crystals. They found that the cracks, which were observed after about 3 pct strain, formed in the region of a kink band and lay on conjugate (110) slip planes instead of the usual(100) cleavage plane. Two different types of cracks were noted: stroh23 and secondary. The Stroh cracks did not exist merely on the surface but extended through the specimen in the form of tiny slits. A secondary

GRAVITATIONAL measurements made by means of the Eötvös torsion balance over any area enable a representation to be obtained of the total gravitational effects over the surface of that area arising from the combination of all sources of gravitational disturbance. The investigation of gravitational anomalies occurring in the upper layers of the earth's crust, in this way, has been attended with considerable success, and, especially in areas in which no undesirable disturbing factors were present, it has been possible to locate geological structures and mineral deposits with remarkable accuracy and also to delineate their confines and to indicate their depth below the surface with a certain amount of precision. Before this can be done successfully, however, it is necessary to determine the gravitational effect arising from all other extraneous .anomalies in order that these may be satisfactorily eliminated. Disturbing features giving rise to these gravitational anomalies may be divided into two classes, according to whether they are situated at or below the surface. The former are determined readily by a detailed leveling of the ground surface, and may be satisfactorily eliminated provided the specific gravity of the terrain material is known, but the latter are generally unknown, and can only be ascertained with difficulty. When, therefore, the observations obtained by means of the Eötvös torsion balance have been corrected for all surface irregularities, known as terrain and topographical effects, there remain residual gravitational values which are due entirely to subterranean conditions. The task of interpreting these results consists in disentangling the various subsurface anomalies, and subsequently in computing and recombining the effects of these various masses in order to verify the interpretation. When the gravitational anomalies are due to large and comparatively simple structures it is a matter of little difficulty to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of the subterranean conditions, but in more complex areas, where the geological conditions are more complicated and several irregular features exist, the process of disentangling the various constituents of the complex mass arrangement is more difficult and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor.

STUDIES on the precipitation of a face-centered from a body-centered structure-a common occurrence in alloy systems-are essential to the development of a theory for the formation of segregate structures. The separation of the alpha phase from the beta of the copper-zinc system is an example of this type of precipitation. EARLIER STUDIES ON THE SUBJECT R. F. Mehl and 0. T. Marzke1 in 1931 presented a paper giving the results of some investigations carried out by them on the segregate structures produced when the alpha and gamma phases of the copper-zinc system and the alpha phase of the copper-aluminum system precipi-tate from the beta phases of these systems. They showed that the alpha phase precipitates as needles close to the [111] directions of the beta phase. In the discussion of that paper some doubt was expressed about the nature of the segregate. More investigations were undertaken to determine the character of the precipitate in the copper-zinc system and also the orientation relationship between the matrix and precipitate. The present paper gives the results of these investigations. Since the publication of the earlier paper, several other papers on this subject have been published in this country and abroad. Haneman and Schroder2 reported that the alpha phase precipitates as needles along the [111] directions of the beta phase and that these needles align themselves to form plates on the {111} planes of the matrix. Mathewson and Smith3 pointed out that the {111} plane does not contain the [111] direction and that it would be quite impossible, therefore, for needles in the [111] direction to form plates on the {111} plane. The fundamental principles and modern techniques of experimental planning and data analysis, applicable to any type of research, are particularly important in flotation experimentation. Since they constitute the modern science of experimentation, they should be among the working tools of any scientist, research engineer, or plant operator engaged in flotation investigates. This chapter is a review of these principles and techniques. Equipment and procedures for the actual conduct of experiments will not be discussed here since these subjects are well covered elsewhere in this volume. Neither will any attempt be made to impart a working knowledge of statistical methods of data analysis since this would be impossible in the space allotted, and many excellent texts are available to the diligent inestigator.1-4 The objective here is simply to interest the reader in the application of statistical techniques to flotation experimentation by illustrating their utility in situations frequently encountered, and to point out the principles of experimental planning necessary for their proper use. Any conscientious metallurgist engaged in flotation experimentation or operations is well aware of the inherent complexity of the flotation process, and of the often frustrating difficulties this introduces into experimentation. The raw materials normally treated by the process are complex both physi- cally and chemically, and often highly variable even when from the same source. The flotation process itself is characterized by a very large number of potentially important process variables. Many of these are beyond the con- trol of the metallurgist, and some cannot even be measured quantitatively with available instruments. Those which can be measured and controlled with reasonable precision often produce effects which are intricately interrelated. Not only are the variables many, but the physical and chemical mechanisms by which they function are imperfectly under stood. To compound the difficulty, experimental techniques are relatively crude. Controls are not very precise, and the human factor looms large in most flotation experiments. These situations lead inevitably to experimental data of a relatively low degree of precision or reproducibility. Some are inclined to think that these conditions are unique to flotation experimentation. They are not. The experimental problems met by the agronomist, the biologist, the social scientist, and others are equally complex. Investigators in these fields pioneered in the development of methods for handling just such situations by proper experimental planning and the application of statistical methods in the analysis of data. Their pioneering work has grown into a well established modern science of experimentation which has spread into every field of science. This science is based upon statistical
