THE Waelz process produces oxides of volatilizable metals from ores, metalliferous products and residues. The process was originally used for recovering zinc and lead, where tailings and residues containing those metals had accumulated at mines or smelters, but it is applicable for obtaining tin, arsenic or other volatilizable metals. It is useful when other methods of obtaining the metals from the ores or residues are too difficult or expensive or show too low a recovery. The Waelz process was developed in 1923 for the treatment of large calamine dumps in Upper-Silesia, which showed zinc contents of 8 to 10 per cent. and lead contents up to 3 per cent. The rapid development of the process, from the first trials up to the plants now working or in course of erection, is shown in Fig. 1. -The first industrial Waelz plant was started in 1925. For this purpose the changes of address have been printed only on one side of the page. The names of new members, being in italics, are readily distinguished from the others, and can be pasted in approximate alphabetical order on the margins of the pages of the list.

ReceNtly there has been considerable interest in the production and use of extra hard alloys composed primarily of tungsten and carbon. Dr. Hoyt's recent paper1 gives a good description of these alloys and describes their performance when used as tools. There are a number of these alloys on the market sold under various trade names, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of an investigation of the structure of five of these alloys by means of microscopic and X-ray methods. The samples studied were in the form of small tools or wiredrawing dies, which were either purchased or supplied as samples. They were in some cases not supplied by the original makers but were furnished by the agents in this country, and we wish to call attention to the fact that they may not be truly representative of the materials supplied under the various trade names No performance data are given and no inference as to the inferiority of one alloy as against any other is made. K. Schröter2 recently described methods for polishing alloys of this type for microscopic examination and has presented photomicrographs of several alloys. However, he did not identify their constituents or describe methods for their identification. Constituents and Their Identification As far back as 1915 attempts were made to utilize tungsten carbides commercially, but the great brittleness of these carbides made these first attempts unsuccessful. Later, successful dies were made by sintering the powdered carbides with small amounts of iron, nickel, or cobalt. Due to the high melting points of the tungsten carbides (2600" to 2800" C.), it is difficult to melt the carbides without volatilizing almost quantitatively the added element of the iron group. IN accordance with the custom of this society, we are gathered here, as we have every year since 1924, to honor the memory of the eminent American metallurgist and teacher, Professor Henry Marion Howe. Unlike many of the distinguished metallurgists who have preceded me as a Howe lecturer, I cannot bring to you reminiscences of his personality, for it was not my privilege to be associated with Professor Howe, or to be directly one of his students. Yet, Professor Howe and Professor Albert Sauveur, through the medium of their books, were my first teachers of metallography, as they have been of almost all American metallurgists of my generation. As a teacher, and for many years the acknowledged leader of American metallurgists, he exercised a profound influence in the growth of our science and was held in honor by the men of science of his time. I can speak no words of technical appreciation that will add luster to his fame, for by his prophetic vision, his teachings, and his researches he stands among the immortals in the memory of all metallurgists. In 1926, the third Howe Memorial Lecture was presented by Professor William Campbell' of Columbia University, who entitled it "Twenty-Five Years of Metallography." He took as a starting date for his chronology the turn of the century, which coincided with his arrival from England to work in association with Howe at the Columbia School of Mines. In that informative lecture Professor Campbell enumerated the important advances in metallography achieved during the first quarter of the century, and, it now appears, may have established the custom of reviewing such progress every twenty-five years. The scope of Professor Campbell's lecture was as broad as his metallurgical knowledge, for it embraced a wide portion of the field of metallography, both ferrous and nonferrous. Twenty-five years later, the Howe Memorial Lecture Committee saw fit to assign to me the honor of writing a lecture that would commemorate the work of Henry Marion Howe and would at the same time constitute the 25th anniversary of the lecture by Professor Campbell. The Committee suggested that this lecture might properly be called "Twenty-Five More Years of Metallography," a suggestion that I have adopted. I must confess, however, that I have not followed the precedent established by Campbell and have narrowed the scope of this lecture to an appraisal of those achievements which in my opinion have contributed most to the progress of microscopical metallography during the past twenty-five years. Progress in Metallography The metallographic methods most widely used today, with the exception of the electron microscope, were firmly established more than twenty-five years ago. In general, our specimens were prepared for microscopic examination in those days in much the same manner as they are today. It is true that new details of technique have been introduced from time to time, and that superior equipment is available today, but on the whole, these improvements have been in the nature of refinements, often a matter of personal preference, and none can be considered essential to the attainment of the ultimate goal of the art and science of metallography, which is to reveal the structure of metallic specimens with unequivocal clarity so that they may be interpreted correctly. Mechanical metallographic polishing, which was the only method available in 1926, is still universally practiced and still consists of abrading the metallic specimen with a series of abrasives of increasing fineness until a specular surface is attained. We have now the alternative method of electropolishing, but it is not widely used because, except in a few special cases, its results are inferior to those of competent mechanical polishing. Likewise, most of the etching reagents preferred today were in common use more than twenty-five years ago and were applied in the same manner as they are today. Valuable improvements have been made in the optical and mechanical performance of metallurgical microscopes, but there was no dearth in those days of excellent instruments equipped with achromatic and apochromatic objectives capable of yielding micrographs comparable in quality with the best that we can make today. In fact, it would be a difficult task for any metallographer today to make optical micrographs at magnifications in excess of 3000 diameters that would surpass those made by Lucas more than twenty-five years ago. One of these is shown in Fig. 1. Yet, it is unquestionable that on the whole, the micrographs appearing in the metallurgical literature today are vastly superior to those

Previous measurements of the thermoelectric power of ionic crystals are reviewed briefly. It is concluded that, while extensive measurerements are available on systems in which the electrode M has a cation in cornon with the sall MX, there is as yet little modern work on systems in which the metal electrode M' does not haue a calion in common with the salt. We haue now measured the thermoelectric power of- single cryslals of KC1 and of KC1 + SrCl2 between plati.nu?n electrodes over a much wider range of temperature than before. individual ionic heats of transport, which, while probably not very accurate, are of a reasonable order of magnitude, are obtained from this data on the basis of an assumption that charge carriers do not cross the electrode/salt interface. RELATIVELY little work has been done on thermal diffusion in ionic crystals. Reinhold and coworkers1-I measured the thermoelectric power and Soret effect in silver and cuprous salts and their mixed crystals. One electrode was kept at constant temperature and electromotive force was measured as a function of the temperature gradient. This is not a satisfactory technique if the results are to be compared with theory; rather should the electromotive force be measured for small temperature differences as a function of the mean temperature of the two electrodes. They used electrodes having the same cation as the salt. Patrick and Lawsons measured the thermoelectric power of AgBr and of AgBr containing 0.25 mole pct CdBr2 using silver electrodes and temperature gradients of 10°C in the temperature range 100° to 400°C. The results were analyzed using the Teltow9 values of the ratio of the mobility of the two types of charge carrier (cation vacancies and interstitials) found from conductance measurements and the wagnerlo estimate of the heterogeneous contribution to the thermopower, Ohet They obtained values of qi = 0.017 ev and q$ = -0.385 ev for the heats of transport of interstitial Ag ions and cation vacancies, respectively. Their data has been reanalyzed by Haga using the corrections to the Wagner formula for ehet given by Howard andLidiard; Haga found ev. Christy et a1.14 have measured the thermopower of AgBr containing 0.01 to 1.0 mole pct CdBr,. They analyzed their results in terms of the theory of Howard and Lidiard and found that excellent agreement with the theory was obtained if q5 + : + hF was set equal to 0.70 ev at 175°C and equal to 0.58 ev at 250°C. Since Teltow's value for hF, the enthalpy of formation of a Frenkel defect pair, is 1.27 ev, this means that qt + q: increases in magnitude from -0.57 ev at 175°C to -0.69 ev at 250°C. This result is in poor agreement with Patrick and Lawson's value of -0.37 ev for pure AgBr (for which the corrections to the Wagner estimate for ehet are very small). christy1' has also reported thermopower measurements for pure silver halides and for the systems he finds that qr + qt for AgBr increases in magnitude from about -0.55 ev at 150°C to about -1.1 ev at 400°C. The temperature dependence of the sum of the heats of transport in AgCl is very similar in magnitude. The sum qi + q cannot be decomposed into the individual interstitial and vacancy heats of transport without a knowledge of the entropy contribution from the change in the lattice vibrational frequencies around the interstitial and vacancy. Despite this it seems an inescapable conclusion from Christy's analysis that and -6 = Q Ag are quite strongly temperature-de pendent and that -q: is much greater in magnitude than the corresponding activation energy for vacancy migration, +0.37 ev. It remains a mystery as to why the data for pure AgBr are fitted so well by the assumption of temperature-independent heats of transport if association of impurity ions and vacancies is neglected.l The values for q$ and q: so obtained are also much more in line with those expected from a simple kinetic interpretation of the heats of transport due to wirtz.17 Christy and Hsueh have also measured the thermopower of CuCl between copper electrodes; 0 for pure CuCl is comparable with that for the silver halides but, owing to the limited solubility of divalent cation impurities it was not found possible to deduce values for the heats of transport. In contrast to these extensive measurements on cells of the type M MX 1 M, there have been relatively few attempts to measure the thermoelectric power of cells of the form M' 1 MX I M'. (We specifically exclude from discussion cells of this type in which the metal electrodes M' are in contact with gas containing a controlled partial pressure of either M or X,, since in these cells the electrochemical reactions are analogous to those of the first type.) The thermoelectric power of Pb12, PbC12, TlC1, TlBr, TlI, NaNO3, and KNO 3 between platinum electrodes was measured by Thie1e.l3 In discussing these measurements Holtan20 asserts that the thermopotential initially fluctuated wildly and even changed sign before approaching a steady value. A high degree of irreproducibility is also evident in the work of Nikitinskaya and Murin21 who first studied the thermopower of NaCl and KC1 between platinum electrodes. Much better reproduci-bility was achieved in our earlier measurements on KC1;22 these were, however, confined to a relatively narrow temperature range and one of the objects of the work reported in this paper was to extend the temperature range of the measurements of the thermoelectric power 8 of KC1. THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLASSIFICATION WHAT is the use of a classification of mineral deposits? From the days of Agricola, the founder of the science of ore deposits, successive authors on the subject have attempted classifications, none of which have attained unanimous indorsement of miners, engineers, or geologists. The miner and engineer naturally have little regard for a classification that does not help them to find ore. Mining geologists may share this feeling, and deplore the overemphasis that may be placed on classification by their academic brothers. Apparent effects of such overemphasis may be reflected by students or new graduates who have grown to think that each deposit must fit perfectly into some pigeonhole of the more or less arbitrary scheme that has been drilled into them. Diversity in mineral deposits as in other natural phenomena, however, is too great to be fully expressed in the usual tabular classification, and experience is essential for the appreciation of the value or usefulness of a classification. The succession of classifications has closely followed the growth of the science of mineral deposits and reflects that growth, as well perhaps as the limited or comprehensive viewpoint of each proponent. The earliest classifications were based on metal content, and were superseded by those based mainly on form of deposit. Source of materials also became a basis, and was followed by physical and chemical conditions and processes. In spite of this development it is interesting to note that in many of the latest reports on mining regions the authors adopt special classifications suited for their particular districts. Some of these, like the earliest classifications, are based primarily on metal content, and others are most conveniently based on form, and it may be convenient to modify these by reference to source of material or temperature of deposition. Some, including the writers, after noting these different usages, have refused to worry much over classification as an ultimate objective, but,

MUCH work has been done dealing with the effect of mechanical stress on electrode potential in an electrochemical system. The contradictory nature of the experimental results indicates the complexity of the problem although thermodynamic considerations show that a simple relationshir, should exist. In those systems where a gas was the electromotive active substance satisfactory agreement between theory and practice has been found. Des Coudres' found this to be so even when the active substance of the electrode, in this case mercury, was in the liquid state. In contrast, attempts to correlate theory and experiment for the solid state have met with a very limited success. The early workers in this field, Andrews,2 Walker and Dill3 used iron, certainly one of the most reactive of metals. Others have made use of less active metals such as copper and nickel. Recently Fryxell and Nachtrieb4 investigated the electrochemical behavior of gold and silver under both tensile and compressive stresses and concluded that it was doubtful whether true stress potentials could ever be measured. Much of the lack of success to measure the thermodynamic stress potential can be ascribed to the presence or formation of a complex film on the metal surface in contact with the electrolyte. Further, the theoretical stress potential is very small and therefore difficult to measure directly. Thus the calculated emf between a 24 B & S gage cold-drawn copper wire stressed with a weight of 1 kg and an unstressed portion of the same wire is only 2.60 X 10"7 volts. This is very small compared to that which can be produced by chemical reactions at the metal electrolyte interface which in turn can be so large as to mask completely the stress potential. Hence in this type of measurement all chemical side effects must be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. It was for this reason that the system copper-sodium chloride solution was selected for study. INSTRUMENTATION In the many preliminary experiments conducted, two major difficulties were encountered. The first was to measure the small electro-potentials to be expected and the second to obtain a suitable electrode surface. The conventional potentiometric method was found to be unsatisfactory for measuring the small emf expected. However, by using an L & N No. 2290 galvanometer having a resistance of 915 ohms consistent measurements were possible. The reference electrode was always the unstressed one made from the same sample of wire. The steady current flow was approximately 10-8 amp. Lewis and Randell5 have stated that for currents of the order of 10-8, if there is no sensible polarization, the measured emf may be taken as a reversible one. To check the galvanomenter readings an alternative method was devised to measure the potential difference between the wires. This involved a Liston-Falb d-c breaker amplifier model 10, an L & N k-2 potentiometer and a moving-coil galvanometer having a sensitivity greater than 0.1 µv (microvolt) per mm. To increase further the output voltage of the amplifier a d-c amplifier, model B. L.-932 was introduced into the circuit. This amplifier was in turn connected to a Brush recorder which had been calibrated previously by the test signals from the Liston-Falb instrument. These test voltages employed took into account the impedance of the input current. Unfortunately, this method had too low a sensitivity for measurement below 10 µv. Above this value the voltage agreed reasonably well with those obtained directly by the simple galvanometer method. The main advantage of the amplifier setup was that one did not have to wait until no deflection occurred on the galvanometer in the circuit when first exposing the wires to the solu-

Since the year 1643, when the first blast furnace in America for treating iron ore was built at Saugus, Mass., out of mica schist quarried in the neighboring district, the procurement of a suitable refractory for furnace lining has been a problem of concern to the operators of furnaces. The stacks built of mica schist continued to smelt iron ore until about 1836, when, according to F. H. Norton, the first firebrick were produced1, at Queens Run, Pa. Other writers speak of brick having been molded and burned in Massachusetts about the year 1834. In 1841, Andrew Russell began to produce medium refractory plastic clay brick near East Liverpool, Ohio, that were used for lining blast furnaces1. The well-known Kentucky clay-producing district was not opened up until the year 1871, but since then it has produced a large percentage of the linings for iron blast furnaces. While some strides have been made by the refractories industry during the 100 years that have passed since the first firebrick were produced, it has been only during the last two decades that any real progress has been made towards bettering the product, even though the method of production had improved. Perhaps the fault lies with the user of the brick rather than with the producer, for not sooner demanding a superior product. During the past 15 years the tonnage produced per lining has increased from 500,000 gross tons to 1,000,000 gross tons, and now some furnaces are producing 1,600,000 gross tons and better on a single lining. It is true that enlarged capacity of furnaces and improved practice have accounted for some of this increase in tonnage, nevertheless better quality in firebrick must be given credit for its share. However, we are not yet ready to say that we have reached a maximum life of furnace lining. We believe that a better product can be produced and that the refractories industries of America will, through their extensive research depart-

Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% Si02, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H20. However, as an industrial commodity, talc rarely approaches theoretical purity. Nevertheless, the impure talc products of commerce find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are tremolite, chlorite, dolomite, mica, and magnesite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical name applied to pure talc. In today's commerce steatite generally refers to the massive variety of talc suitable for electrical insulator manufacture. Block steatite ore can be machined into various shapes. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly referred to as soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soapstone and talc, this is a natural thing since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as "slip") have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there is a mineralogical relationship of pyrophyllite to montmorillonite and talc to hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Indians on Santa Catalina Island, CA. In the mid-1800s, soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains was used by white settlers for building and ornamental stone and in the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon. 1956). Previous to 1916, the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 2000 tons. In the period 1912 to 1918, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 9,000 to 20,000 tons. In the mid-1930s, the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California, the production of talc grew to 63,000 stpy in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California production to grow to 120,000 tons in 1951. In 1968, production was 165,000 tons, 1969 was 145,000 tons, 1970 was 185,000 tons, and 1972 was 155,000 tons. Talc mining in New York state dates to about 1878 when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville, New York. In 1893, this operation was sold to the International Pulp Co. which changed its name to the International Talc Co. in 1944. The company was acquired by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc. in 1974. A new talc operation, the Gouverneur Talc Co. owned by the R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, NY, in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 200 stpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to over 600 stpd. The Vermont talc industry began just after the start of the 20th century. Talc was discovered in the area of the present Johnson, VT, talc mine in 1902. The American Minerals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. The Magnesia Talc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, VT, in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963; Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine has a long history as a producer of talc crayons. The Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by a merger of the Eastern Talc, Co.

PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENTS According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. NO one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, but not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

In previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravitational forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and prototype material are the same and the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at hill and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may therefore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. A classical theory of solid solutions involving neavest-nergkbor intevactions with both central and linked-central forces between atoms has been developed. It has been found that the theory, where it can be checked quantitatively, is in ageement with experiment. The theory encompasses a description of many diverse pkenomena, such as antiphase shift structures, size effect, relative stabilities of various solutions, lattice para,neters, and order-disorder transitions. In particulav. a quantitative prediction not involving adjustable pavameters is made concevning the deviation of the Au-Cu interatonlic distance in long-range ordered (Ll,) Cu-Au I fronl the average distance based on the distances in pure gold and copper. This prediction, which is in agreement with expel-intent, has not been encompassed by any preuious theory. The theory of order-disorder is fragmentary. That is, no one theory exists that can explain the variety of qualitative phenomena observed. Further, many theories are not in good quantitative agreement with experiment. This subject has been reviewed by Muto and Takagi, Tuttman, and Oriani.3 There exists no doubt that the quasi-chemical approximation is not a complete description and that the inclusion of strain energy using macroscopic elasticity theory concepts leads to results in disagreement with experimenL4 The observation of antiphase domains and ordering systems such as Cu-Pt has led to Brillouin zone treat-ment of the order-disorder transition as opposed to the classical Ising model. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that it is possible to develop a pairwise approximation model that can explain many of the observed order-disorder phenomena that have puzzled investigators in the past. This theory is based upon an empirical model due to ergmman' for the elastic constants of metals. This model is generalized for multicomponent systems. As will be shown, the theory yields a short-range ordering energy for the disordered solution which differs from the ordering energy calculated from the differences in energy of disordered and long-range ordered solutions. It will be demonstrated that there is no necessary correlation between heats of formation and the tendency to order or between size effect and the tendency to order. Also, the existence of antiphase domains and iso-short-range-order systems that form superlattices (Cu-Pt) is predicted on the basis of the theory. Further, the relative stability of competing superlattices is calculable from the theory. If single-crystal elastic-moduli data are available for the pure components and one superlattice then there exists but one adjustable parameter in the calculation of lattice parameters for both the disordered and ordered solid solutions. In one special case, no adjustable parameters are required and a quantitative prediction is made. For the calculation of energies and partial order, there exists but one additional adjustable parameter, the pair-exchange energy V used in the quasi-chemical approximation (or the Ising model.) However, in these calculations, much more precise values are required for the single-crystal elastic moduli than available if the quantitative uncertainties in the predicted values of the energies are to be sufficiently small. THEORY ~er~man' has developed a model with which he was able to obtain fair agreement with experiment for the relations between the elastic constants for metals. This model which we shall call Bergman's model is a linear combination of his models I and 11. In effect, Bergman, in this model, considers that each interatomic distortion is composed of two components: a classical central force distortion with an associated central force constant and what we shall call a linked-central force distortion with an associated linked central-force constant. The linked-central force distortion component obeys the constraint that the sum of such distortions over all the bonds equals zero. No constraint is imposed on the classical central force distortion component. Bergman' derives the constraint on the linked-central force distortion on the basis of application of Pauling's relation between bond distortion and bond number to metals.ga This assumption is not logically necessary, however, and the Bergman model may be taken as a mathematical model for elastic constants, e.g., a purely empirical model without a physical basis. In the present work, the method of Bergman has been applied to two-component systems (solid solutions). In place of an external strain—which would allow a calculation of the elastic constants for the two-component system—it is considered that internal interatomic distortions exist as a consequence of having three potentially unequal distortion-free interatomic distances and but one "average" interatomic distance. It is assumed that the distortion-free interatomic distances between atoms of the same element are those found in the pure element having the same undistorted crystal structure as the solid solution. The distortion-free interatomic distance between unlike atoms is in general not measurable except in the probably nonexistent
