Dr. John Chipman, Professor of Metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and chairman of the A.I.M.E. Committee on Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, presided. In opening the meeting, the chairman said: "The purpose of this round table is to discuss methods of study by which more and better information on the fundamentals of steelmaking can be obtained. It was thought that a round table discussion rather than a symposium would furnish the best opportunity for those actually using various methods of study to get together and discuss their common problems. For this reason attention will be focused upon methods of study rather than upon their results. We want new and current and up-to-date discussion.

THE Research Division of The New Jersey Zinc Company (of Pa.) has conducted, over a period of years, numerous tests of the reducibility of various zinc ores and the reactivity of various kinds of coal, using a number of different experimental methods. Most of these tests have involved the reduction of mixtures of ore and coal. In such cases the following simultaneous reactions are believed to be mainly responsible for the production of zinc, as was shown by Bodenstein1 some years ago: ZnO + CO = Zn + CO2[I] C + CO2 = 2CO[2]. Each of these reactions is dependent upon the other for the supply of CO and C02, respectively, and the over-all rate of formation of zinc vapor will be determined by the slower of these two reactions. An analogous pair of reactions sometimes of importance is: ZnO + H2 = Zn + H2O[3] C+ H2O=CO+H2[4] While it is possible to obtain an indication of the relative reducibility of various ores, or of a fine versus a coarse ore, by testing them with a given coal, and while coal reactivities may be measured in a corresponding manner, a more direct determination of relative reaction rates is possible by carrying out the desired reactions, such as I and 2, separately and under reproducible conditions. It is one purpose of this paper to present some of the results that have been obtained by the latter method. C. G. Maier2 discusses the relative rates of reactions I and 2 and concludes that while at relatively low temperatures reaction I is faster than reaction 2, this difference becomes less with increasing temperatures, although at smelting temperatures reaction I is still the faster. He also says (p. 48), "At temperatures . . . between 1100° and 1300°C the zinc oxide reduction reaction is intrinsically more rapid than its physical limitations; that is, it is limited by gas diffusion rates." In the course of numerous reactivity tests involving the separate use of reactions and I and 2, we have obtained data that show by direct experiment, we believe for the first time, the correctness of Maier's statements concerning these reactions. We also include data on the relative rate of reaction 3, involving reduction by hydrogen. Finally, some interesting results obtained by carrying out the reduction of a zinc ore-coal briquet in streaming atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, respectively, are presented.*

The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size. OVER the past few years, metallic arc welding has been extended to steels of the hardenable type. As compared with other methods of fabrication, production has been facilitated, service performance frequently has been improved, and the overall results have been so favorable that engineers and production men have placed great emphasis on this application of welding. The metallurgist and welding engineer, however, have been confronted with new problems, since, for one reason, the harder steels are more apt to crack and special precautions must be taken if sound joints are to be procured. Some of the factors that are pertinent to this problem are metallurgical, and it is an object of this contribution to discuss steel manufacture and processing methods and to show how their control assists in reducing the hazard of cracking. By this time, the problem of cracking specifically underbead cracking, or "hard cracks," or parent-metal cracks-is well known, and a large amount of work has been published, both here and abroad, dealing with this subject.1 The tests described are made under restraint to facilitate cracking and, are so designed that a semiquantitative, or at least a relative, value of the cracking tendency is obtained. As one would expect, it has been reported that the incidence of cracking increases with the carbon and alloy content of the steel. More specifically, the cracking tendency is said to increase with the hardenability of the steel, though it is now recognized that the situation is not so simple. The phenomenon itself, on the other hand, has been but loosely described, and it is in only broad generalizations that this cracking has been related to steel metallurgy. Thus, while it has been abundantly demonstrated that the hardenable aircraft steel, S.A.E. 4130, must tend to crack when arc-welded, the problem still remains of why two lots of the same composition and the same hardenability can vary so greatly in cracking tendency, or what it is about the prior metallurgical history that so strongly affects the results. Further, while the efficacy of preheating and postheating in preventing cracking is recognized and utilized in production, the mechanism by which they function seems not to have been described. These points are thought to be significant in the production of steel for fabrication by metallic arc welding and, hence, of interest to mill and process metallurgists and welding engineers. Consequently, it is another object of this paper to discuss the mechanism of parent-metal cracking, including the influence of the condition of the steel and the control of cracking by manipulation of the time-temperature conditions during and after welding. A new method of rating the cracking. tendency is also discussed, and the results of the test are related to steel composition and structure or prior history. One of the most vital problems in the manufacture of steel at present is the occurrence of the defects that have been popularly termed "snow flakes," "flakes," or "scabs." Particularly is this the problem of many manufacturers who, during the past 2 yr., have undertaken large-scale production for the first time. A study of the microstructure of such defective material throws considerable light upon the nature of these defects and is essential before measurcs may be taken for the elimination of the defects. Flakes do not appear to be found in the plain carbon steels; they have been found. however, in abundance in some of the simple alloy steels that are being used in such vast quantities; vie., nickel steel of the approximate composition, 0.40 carbon and 3.5 per cent. nickel, and in the chrome-nickel type. The present article summarizes the characteristic features of defective steel of the flaky type as they have been found by laboratory study of numerous specimens, and it aims to show the conditions within the metal that are favorable to the occurrence of this type of defect without entering into the details of mill practice (size of ingot, design of molds, rate of cooling, distribution of cooling stresses, etc.), all of which conditions appear to play a role in the production of these defects. MacrostrUctURe To one familar with flaky steel, the appearance of "snow-flakes" is unmistakable and is not to be confused with other types of defects. Figs. 1 to 6 show the appearance of fractures of steel showing this type of defect; the white silvery area, which always has the appearance of being of a very coarsely crystalline structure, in the specimen stands out in bold contrast to the darker background and readily justifies the use of the term "snow-flakes." EACH generation accepts the developments of the preceding generations without full appreciation of the difficulties that had to be overcome or of the effect of any given development on society. Today, the production of pig iron is the yardstick with which general industrial health and progress are measured. So natural and logical does this seem to us, that it is difficult to picture conditions prior to the fourteenth century when pig iron was unknown. Not only was pig iron unknown but iron or steel could not be melted and poured into castings; all iron and steel articles were forged from sponge iron. All castings, as well as many worked articles, were made of non-ferrous metals or alloys. In many parts of the world, over long periods of time, not only was the annual exchange value of non-ferrous metals greater than that of iron and steel, but their combined tonnage was greater. At present, the value of the pig iron produced in a year is of the same order of magnitude as that of all non-ferrous metals combined; the tonnage of pig iron is, however, about twenty times that of all non-ferrous metals combined. Owing to lack of records, we will probably never know the relative importance of the various metals at all periods in historic times. A certain conclusion is that the iron and steel industry, since the discovery of pig iron and the cheap methods of converting it into steel, has grown at a much more rapid rate than the non-ferrous metal industries. Notwith-standing their fundamental fitness for man's needs, iron and steel owe their importance in no small degree to the low cost of production. The low cost was a result of increased knowledge of the production appliances and of the metallurgical processes. This increased knowledge is the key to our modern industrial civilization.

Having been appointed, on February 19th, 1890, a member of the Commission created by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of investigating the " Waste of Coal Mining, with the View to the Utilizing of the Waste" (waste in this case referring specially to the small sizes of anthracite heretofore thrown away), my attention was naturally directed to the mash economical method of burning these small sizes.* Although I had been Familiar with the burning of anthracite for • many years, I found when I came to study the matter carefully that I was far from thoroughly understanding it, particularly with reference to the hurning of the smaller sizes, and that the literature of the subject, which was not very extensive, had more of a tendency to confuse than to enlighten me. I began therefore to investigate the subject so as to arrive if possible at some definite principles applicable to the question. With the aid of my assistant, Mr. John R. Wagner, I began at Drifton a series of experiments upon the burning of small anthracites. We first erected a small furnace with a grate 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, with which we experimented about two months. From the information thus acquired, we designed and built another furnace of about the same size, which gave us facilities for extending our investigations still further. After experimenting several months with the second furnace, we built a third one, which was much larger, having a grate area of about 68 square feet, which was exactly the size of the grate used in the boiler-plants of' Coxe Bros. &

Photoelectronic radiation detectors may be conveniently classified as homogeneous intrinsic, homogeneom extrinsic, or junction type. Highly photosensitive homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors may be prepared from a number of different II-VI, III-V, or IV materials. Such materials require the presence of specific imperfections that can act as sensitizing centers to provide long majority carrier lifetime. Homogeneous extrinsic photodetectors are of interest primarity for infrared detection, and consist principully of germaniuim and silicon with suitable inpurities. A vaviety of junction photodetectors exist, with silicon us the most common material for them all. The following extrema in performance are found: 1) highest photoconductivity gain in homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors; 2) smallest response time (highest frequency response) in p-i-n junctions; 3) largest gain-bandwidth product in avalanche diodes. ALTHOUGH the total number of materials exhibiting photoconductivity effects is very large, only a relatively few of these have appropriate properties for a practical photoelectronic radiation detector. In fact if one surveys the commercial detectors currently available, one finds that the field is dominated by some ten or fewer materials. These are summarized in Table 1 in terms of the other important variable in detector fabrication, the structure of the material, i.e., whether the material is used as a single crystal or in polycrystalline form, and whether the material is used as a homogeneous detector or whether the detector depends upon the existence of a junction or barrier in the material. The principal wavelength range for each type of material is also shown, together with an indication of the utilization of intrinsic or extrinsic excitation. For the purposes of the present comparison of various detectors, it will be convenient to discuss two main topics: homogeneous photodetectors and junction photodetectors. The performance of a photoelectronic radiation detector is measured in terms of two parameters: the photoconductivity gain, and the response time of the detector. A convenient figure-of-merit is given by the ratio of gain to response time, often called the gain-bandwidth product. The photoconductivity gain is a device parameter since it varies in many cases with the applied voltage and the detector geometry, and should be distinguished from the actual photosensitivity of the material involved. This photosensitivity can be conveniently given as the product of free carrier lifetime and mobility in the material. The photoconductivity gain is defined as the number of charge carriers which pass between the electrodes per second for each photon absorbed per second, where G is the photoconductivity gain, is the pho-tocurrent in amperes, e is the electronic charge in coulombs, and F is the total number of electron-hole pairs created in the photo conductor per second by the absorption of light. The gain may also be expressed as the ratio of the lifetime of a free carrier to the transit time for that carrier, i.e., the time required for the carrier to move between the electrodes. For a material in which one-carrier conductivity dominates, where T is the lifetime of a free carrier, ttr is the transit time for this carrier, p is the carrier mobil-ity, V is the applied voltage, and L is the electrode spacing. From Eq. [2] it follows that the photoconductivity gain is proportional to the photosensitivity of the material (tP), the proportionality constant being The photosensitivity of a material, and hence the photoconductivity gain of a device utilizing the material, depends on the lifetime of the free carriers as a critical parameter. In a homogeneous material this lifetime is determined by the nature of imperfections in the material, and in an inhomogeneous material the lifetime is determined by the specific junction structure. The speed of response, the other basic photodetec-tor parameter, is determined by factors quite similar to those important for photoconductivity gain. Imperfections are of primary importance in homogeneous materials, and the structure of the junction is a determining factor in junction devices. For infrared detectors it has become common to define another quantity designed to indicate directly how effective the detector is in distinguishing between a small photoconductivity signal and random noise due to the detector and its environment. In the South Island of New Zealand an unusually favorable opportunity is offered for the analysis of the older crystalline rocks, underlying the sedimentary rocks which form the "country" of the gold-deposits. The Manipori formation of this island, comprising the greater part of the mountainous district west of lakes Manipori and Te Anau, in Otago, consists of an enormous thickness (estimated by Professor Hutton1 at 160,000 ft.) of crystalline schists, gneiss, syenite, and syenitic gneiss, with associated masses of granite; the whole forming the most picturesque fart of New Zealand. The famous West Coast sounds occur in this formation. No paying auriferous lodes have been discovered in it; and for this reason an examination of the rocks is specially interesting here. Stelzner, Posepny, and others, who have criticised the conclusions of Sandberger, have laid great stress on the fact that all the silicates analyzed by him were taken from the vicinity of orebodies containing those heavy metals which he notes as occurring in the silicates of the country-rock; their contention being that these metals, supposed to occur as silicates in gneiss and other crystalline rocks, were really contained as sulphides, and were therefore impregnations from the neighboring orebodies. The same objection, whatever be its weight, might be urged with equal justice against Mr. Becker's derivation of the mercury and gold of the lodes of the Pacific Coast from' the granite underlying their country-rock. Early workers attempted to study the structure of alloys by measurement of equilibrium electrode potentials in aqueous solutions containing ions of the metals from which the alloy was made.' The method was subject to such limitations (e.g., the difficulty in attaining electrochemical equilibrium at low temperatures) that it has not been widely used by metallurgists. Recently, Seltz and co-workers have introduced a greatly improved method for studying alloys by measurement of equilibrium electrode potentials in molten salts.2"4 The mathematical treatment is the same, of course, as for equilibrium potentials of amalgams in aqueous solutions.5 This method will probably find extensive use, since it makes possible not only the determination of phase fields of equilibrium diagrams but also the determination of certain thermodynamic quantities which can be used advantageously in metallurgical calculations. However, the method presents difficulties. With many metallic and alloy electrodes, reversibility is not readily obtainable. Also, the difficulty of obtaining suitable material from which to make the cells is increased as the temperature is increased. Moreover, the necessity of carrying out measurements in a vacuum requires additional apparatus and introduces considerable difficulty, especially at the higher temperatures. Apparently, no consideration has been given heretofore to the metallurgical use of irreversible electrode potentials that exist when a specimen is immersed in a suitable aqueous solution at room temperature. The apparatus and the method required for such measurements are very simple, and if the results of such measurements could be demonstrated to be reproducible they might be very valuable in studying the structure of alloys. The method would not have the scope of that developed by Seltz and his co-workers because no thermodynamic quantities could be calculated from the data. However, the utility and the simplicity of the method might warrant extensive use for the determination of phase fields and similar applications. Theory of Irreversible Potentials A brief review of the theory of irreversible potentials will be given before showing how to interpret the potential readings in terms of alloy structure. It is known that heterogeneity of a metal surface in an electrolyte will produce points of different potentials, with the result that current flows between these points and electrochemical reactions occur. The points at which oxidation reactions are localized are known as anodes, and those at which reduction reactions are localized are known as cathodes.6, 7, 8 For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the terms anode and cathode as applied to a primary cell, the potential difference between anode and cathode of such a cell can be measured when

Using X-ray pole-figure information and the single-crystal elastic constants, the angular variation of an elastic modulus in a polycrystal can be calculated and compared to measured clalues. This procedure has been used in the past to provide supporting ecidence for a particular choice of ideal orientations in the description o the X-ray pole figure. Since it is well-known that the absolute value oj an elastic modlus oj a poly crystal cannot be acczrralely calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants, there exists a serious question about the reliability oj this modulus method in the study of textures. The vesults show that, although the absolute isallre oj Young's modulus depends strongly on the assumptions made, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the assumptions and thus can be used reliably in texture studies. Exatzples oj' using this criteriotz are illustrated in the text. NeARLY all poly crystalline materials have some preferred orientation in the arrangement of their grains and hence exhibit anisotropy in their properties. This preferred orientation is usually measured and studied by X-rays which yield detailed information on the statistical distribution of grain orientations in the form of pole figures. The usefulness of these pole figures in theories of texture formation and in predictions of properties has come to depend almost entirely on the characterization of the pole figure by one or more ideal orientations. Unfortunately, this characterization is not unique and different authors often present different ideal orientations to characterize a given pole figure. In order to distinguish between these different choices of ideal orientations, it is necessary to go beyond X-rays and consider other physical properties which reflect the texture' simply because any choice of ideal orientations must predict correctly the observed anisotropy in all physical properties. The most common example of this procedure has made use of the angular variation of Young's modulus with respect to the rolling direction in the plane of a rolled sheet.3 4 Here the anisotropy can be measured easily and it can also be calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants and the chosen ideal orientation. Unfortunately the methods used to calculate this anisotropy were chosen for their simplicity rather than for their mathematical rigor so that there exists a serious question as to the validity of conclusions reached by this modulus method. It is well-known5 that the absolute value of the Young's modulus of a polycrystalline aggregate cannot be calculated very accurately because different mathematical averages over the grains yield different results. It is one purpose of this paper to examine the effect of different averaging procedures on the calculated anisotropy of Young's modulus in the rolling plane of rolled sheets in order to see if this property can be used reliably in texture studies. This particular modulus and type of material were chosen because the modulus is easily measured and rolled sheet is technologically important. The results show that, although different averages yield different absolute values for Young's modulus, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the averaging procedure and thus can be used as a criterion to check the various ideal orientations used to characterize the X-ray pole figure. Examples of this checking procedure are given in the final section. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of using the anisotropy of Young's modulus as an indicator of texture without reference to pole figures or ideal orientations. Such a use would require that different textures yield quite different shapes for the modulus vs angle curve so that the distinction between textures would be quite clear. The experimental results presented in the final section indicate that there is easily enough variation in shapes to allow modulus measurements to be useful texture indicators, par-

The mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. IIO W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3 NaHCo3.2H2O). Pure trona con-tains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. Analyses Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells† and found to be exceptionally Pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nighten-gale‡ for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3 NaHCo3.2H2O). Pure trona con-tains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. The morphology and crystallography of marten -site formed during quenclzing were examined by transmission electron microscopy in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pet Ni and Fe-33 wt pet Ni. Depending upon composition, four types of transformation products were observed in this portion of the Fe-Cr-Ni system. Three of these products are denoted as lath, plate, and surface martensite. The hcp structure found in association with martensite it? certain higlz-clzromium stairzless steels does not influence the transformation crystallogyaphy and cannot he Considered to act as a transitional structure in the transformation from austenite to martensite. DISTINCT changes in the characteristics of mar-tensitic transformations are produced by the partial replacement of nickel by chromium in austenitic iron alloys. Large, discrete martensite plates form in Fe-30 pct Ni, while aggregates of small crystals form in sheets parallel with (111)A austenite planes in stainless steels containing in the vicinity of 18 pct Cr and 8 pct Ni. These transformation structures are termed plate and lath martensite, respectively. In addition, an hcp structure (E) has been observed in certain high-chromium stainless steels in association with martensite. It has been suggested that the E structure acts as an intermediate step in the nucleation of martensitel-' and influences the morphology and crystallography of the final transformation product. However, this structure may be the consequence of the deformation of austenite arising from the shape distortion accompanying the transformation to bcc martensite.' An hcp stacking of atoms is produced in an fcc lattice by the introduction of an intrinsic stacking fault on alternate (111)A planes. At present, the arguments behind each explanation for the E structure are based on circumstantial evidence. This investigation seeks to determine the importance of the hcp structure to the martensitic transformation, and to examine the crystallography and morphology of the structures produced in bulk samples by quenching in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pct Ni and Fe-33 wt pct Ni. These aspects of the martensitic transformations occurring in these alloys have been studied by electron metallography and selected-area diffraction of foils examined in transmission in the electron microscope. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys have been prepared from thoroughly mixed powders of pure iron (99.6+ pct, 0.06 max pct C, 0.15 max pct N), chromium (99.9+ pct), and nickel (99.9+ pct). After sintering in an Ar-H2 atmosphere, the mixtures were melted by induction heating in recrystallized alumina boats under purified argon. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.4-mm sheets (100 pct reduction in thickness) after the removal of at least 1.5 mm from their surfaces by grinding. Three-millimeter discs were punched from the cold-rolled sheet and annealed at 1150°C for approximately 24 hr in evacuated quartz capsules. The average grain size was 40 µ Thin foils for examination in transmission in the electron microscope were prepared from discs quenched to liquid-nitrogen temperature. A depression was first jet-machined into the center of a disc and a thin area (less than approximately 3000A in thickness) was produced at the base of the depression by electropolishing. WITH the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that procedures of heat treating common magnesium casting alloys be investigated systematically. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. Research on the solution heat treatment and aging of magnesium alloy AZ92, (formerly ASTM No. 17; also known as Dowmetal C or AM260) which was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-21, in 1942-1943, and reported, in detail in a final report to the OSRD on September 3, 1943, is the basis of this paper, which has been released for publication by the OSRD. American experience with magnesium alloys prior to World War II was limited, although some of these alloys had been in commercial use since 1909. Requirements of the aircraft industry for light alloys made it imperative to understand and utilize the advantageous strength-weight properties of magnesium castings. Magnesium casting alloys are commonly solution heat treated to increase their ultimate tensile strength and ductility; this treatment may be followed by an age hardening at elevated temperatures, which raises the tensile yield strength but diminishes the ductility. In the present investigation, AZ92 was studied to determine the effects on properties of various solution heat treatment and aging schedules. The principles of heat treatment of magnesium alloys are the same as for other non-ferrous alloys. The alloy studied, AZ92, has a nominal composition of 9 pct aluminum, 2 pct zinc, and minor constituents. Fig I shows, by the projection of isothermal sections on the concentration plane, the solubility surface1 of the ternary magnesium-rich solid solutions as determined by X ray analysis. From this figure it may be seen that above approximately 375°C (707°F), AZ92 alloy is a single phase alloy at equilibrium; below this temperature the equilibrium condition is a. two phase alloy. The beta constituent which precipitates from the solid solution exerts a hardening effect. Because the zinc concentration is only 2 pct, and because of its solubility relations, AZ92 resembles a binary alloy of magnesium with aluminum. The solubility curve1 of Fig 2 shows how rapidly the solubility of the beta phase decreases with decreasing temperatures. Unlike many aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys do not age harden at room temperatures; precipitation hardening of AZ92 alloy is performed at about 177°C (350°F). SEVEN years ago, Dr. S. L. Hoyt1 presented a masterful discussion of the hard metal carbides and cemented tungsten carbide. His lecture summarized most of the data then available in the field; many of the details relating to the production, properties and structure of cemented tungsten carbide had never been previously published, for, in fact, this information was only then being acquired. During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned.
