THIS paper outlines a series of tests carried out during the first six months of 1927, in the laboratory and mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. The object of the tests was to determine whether the soluble salts present in the mill circuit water were having a detrimental effect on the recovery made by flotation. To accomplish this object a series of water analyses were made, followed by flotation experiments in which definite quantities of the salts found were added as addition agents. Before proceeding to describe the results obtained in the course of the investigation, reference will be made to five articles that have appeared during the last two years in which the action of such salts is discussed. Two of these are by A. T. Tye1,2 and describe flotation practice at Cananea and the way in which water high in ferrous and ferric salts is conditioned for differential flotation. Two, one by A. C. Munro and H. A. Pearse3 and the other by H. A. Pearse,4 outline Britannia milling methods, and the advantages that have been derived from ore washing; while in the fifth, A. W. Hahn5 summarizes the results of laboratory experiments in which ferrous, ferric and aluminum sulfates have been added in varying amounts. The mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. has a daily capacity of 3000 tons, and is situated about 75 miles south of Douglas, Arizona, on the Rio de Nacozari, in the Mexican state of Sonora. The ore treated is mined from the company's mine at Pilares, about 5 miles southeast of the Concentrator. This ore contains about 2.5 per. cent. copper -- present almost entirely as chalcopyrite-and 10 per cent. iron, of which

Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. The other half comes from brines and playa lakes in California, Texas, and Wyoming. Salt cake is used mainly for papermaking. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is expressed to William B. RECENTLY spectrophotometry has been reported to provide a convenient technique for the rapid and reproducible determination of xanthate concentration in pulp solutions,12 and for a kinetic study of xanthate decomposition in acid solutions." Since the application of this analytical technique is feasible for those compounds showing pronounced light absorption maxima in the near ultraviolet region, it was deemed advisable to investigate the absorption spectra of some of the organic compounds that are used in flotation. It is known empirically that certain groups of atoms in an organic compound cause characteristic light absorption in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet range, and the wavelengths and intensities of the corresponding absorption maxima are relatively independent of the nature of the remainder of the compound. The characteristic values of such groups, which are known as chromophores, are given in the literature.4,5 According to this information, many of the sulphydryl compounds are expected to show absorption maxima in the near or long wavelength ultraviolet region, whereas the saturated fatty acids and the saturated alkylamines do not. This article reports the absorption spectra of the six following types of sulphydryl compounds; mono-, di-(xanthate), and trithiocarbonates, dithiocarba-mate, dithiophosphate (aerofloat), and mercaptan. A Beckman DU quartz spectrophotometer was used to investigate the spectra in the wavelength region of 215 to 350mp. Materials: All the mono-, di-, and trithiocarbonates used in this investigation were prepared in the usual manner" from appropriate compounds obtained from Eastman Distillation Product Industries. The dithiocarbonates included the normal alkyl compounds from methyl to octyl inclusive, as well as the isopropyl, isobutyl, and isoamyl xanthates. A stability criterion for a lamellar eutectic interface was derived previously1 assuming that the wavelength, A,. of the perturbation which grows most rapidly is much larger than the lamellar spacing. A. This assumption was required to permit averaging of both the interface temperature and composition over the complicated geometry of a lamellae. If this assumption is invalid, as has been suggested.2,3 then the problem becomes too complicated to solve completely. The first of these analyses1 did not calculate the wavelength. A,. of the initially unstable perturbation. whereas the more recent analysis.' which led to a contradiction of this assumption. did not include one of the key factors for determining this wavelength. To rigorously determine the wavelength, the effect of the curvature of the perturbed interface (not considered by either of the above treatments) must be included. By omitting this term, one would be led to an incorrect conclusion regarding the magnitude of A,. but to an accurate criterion for stability as evidenced by the excellent agreement with experimental observations.' In the case of single-phase alloys. the critical wavelength. A,. for instability can be calculated from the Mullins and Sekerka4 (M.S.) analysis which includes the effects of capillarity. In the following discussion, the M.S. analysis is applied to lamellar eutectics and the critical wavelengths calculated for reasonable growth conditions in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys. In order to apply the M.S. analysis to eutectics. one may substitute i) the effective liquidus slope.1 m*. for the single-phase liquidus slope and ii) the ratio of the bulk alloy composition. IN this survey of the progressive development of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. PHILADELPHIA Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1853, when the Pennsylvania Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1850-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

The activation energy for steady state creep above -500°C is observed to be independent of the applied stress although it varies from -67 kcal per mole at 2 at. pct Si to -100 kcal per mole at 11 at. pct Si due to changes in crystallographic order. The magnitude of the activation energy, by comparison with Fe-A1 alloys, indicates FeSi type of order in certain alloys. X-ray results confirmed the presence of FeSi type of order. It is proposed that dislocation climb is the rate controlling mechanism for all the alloys. It has been demonstrated that when a diffusion mechanism is the rate controlling process, the formation of a superlattice in brass,1 Fe3A1,2 Ni3Fe,3-5 and Feco6 1) increases the creep resistance, and 2) increases the activation energy for steady state creep. Furthermore, a study of creep in Fe-15 to 20 at. pct A1 alloys7 has revealed that as the alloy composition approaches the long-range order field, there is an increase in the activation energy for steady state creep which is thought to be due to an increase in short range order. Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys are similar in that they both form the DO3 superlattice in which aluminum or silicon atoms have only iron atoms as first and second nearest neighbors. There are, however, two important differences between the alloy systems: 1) The superlattice formation at -350°C commences at -10 at. pct si8 as compared to -20 at. pct Al,9 and 2) Fe-A1 alloys form a FeAl (B2 type) super-lattice where aluminum atoms have all iron first nearest neighbors even at 22 at. pct Al, but so far no similar FeSi superlattice has been observed. With the similarity between Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys in mind, alloys of iron with 2 to 11 at. pct Si were examined for variations with composition of the activation energy for steady state creep and of creep strength. The temperature range of greatest interest was above 1/2 TM (TM is the absolute melting temperature) where it is usually observed that diffusion is the rate controlling process. A subsidiary X-ray investigation of the Fe-Si system was undertaken in an attempt to define the position of the order-disorder boundary as a function of cooling rate. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS a) Creep. Specimens whose gage length was 1.5 in. and with a cross-section 0.04 by 0.08 in. were strained in tension by a lever-arm arrangement, and the load was adjusted between each creep test to maintain constant stress. The apparatus and mode of operation have been fully described in a previous publication.7 As each test produced a creep strain of 0.25 pct, the variation in stress during the test was negligible. Creep strain was measured at the end of one of the alloy steel grips by a displacement transducer with the out-of-balance potential being recorded on a variable speed recorder. The full-scale deflection of the recorder could be varied in steps to give limits of sensitivity of between 0.1 and 0.001 pct creep strain. The alloys, Table I, were made available by the Metallurgical Department, National Physical Laboratory (N.P.L.), england,10 and by the Research Department, General Electric Co. (G.E.), Schenectady, N.Y. They were hot worked at -850°C, warm worked at 550° to 650°C, and recrystallized in vacuum at -750°C to give a grain diameter of -0.1 mm. All the alloys had a very low impurity content; those from the N.P.L., for which a complete analysis is available,&apos;&apos; show carbon less than 0.026 pct, manganese less than 0.006 pct, and oxygen plus nitrogen less than 0.0024 pct. b) X-ray Procedure. A General Electric XRD-5 X-ray set with a focussing lithium fluoride mono-chromator in the diffracted beam, and a pulse height analyzer to eliminate harmonic wavelengths of the cobalt radiation, was used to investigate the structure of several very fine grained (grain diameter <.01 mm) Fe-Si alloys after the following heat treatments: 1) Quenched from 700°C, 2) slow cooled from 650°C (-40°C per hr), and 3) very slowly cooled from 400° to 100°C (10°C per hr with a 24 hr anneal every 100°C). The method of obtaining the diffraction pattern over the range of 20 from 15 to 45 deg was to count for at least 100 sec every l/3 deg with a slit subtending 1 deg in 20 at the focus; the probable counting error was less than 2 pct.

IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

In a paper1 presented before this Institute in 1926,I briefly discussed the evaluation of coking coals by means of ultimate analysis. The paper contained several graphic studies in which coal analyses calculated free of moisture, ash, sulfur and nitrogen were plotted on triaxial diagrams in which carbon + hydrogen + oxygen = 100 per cent. From a study of such data for 600 coking coals of the United States, and 150 coking coals of Wales, France and Germany, it was concluded that it was usually possible to predict coking properties and by-product yields with fair success from ultimate analysis. The coals which have proved exceptions to the general rules were found to have physical peculiarities. Run-of-mine Coal It must not be forgotten that run-of-mine coal is a composite material consisting of many constituents differing in physical properties and chemical analysis. A coal sample usually contains: 1. Glossy black coal known as anthraxylon or vitrain. This constituent usually has the strongest coking properties, and the lowest ash content. 2. Dull black coal consisting of attritus containing thin layers of anthraxylon. It is also known as clarain. This constituent, in a coking coal, usually has good to excellent coking properties. 3. Mineral charcoal or fusain. This is a porous black material which is soft and crumbly (unless impregnated with mineral matter) and which has absolutely no coking properties. It is different in every respect from the other constituents in coal. The volatile matter content of mineral charcoal is less than 20 per cent. even when it is associated with high-volatile coals. As would be expected the hydrogen content is low, and the carbon content is high. 4. A coal sample may contain tough gray canneloid material which has a high-volatile matter and a high hydrogen content, but is poor in coking qualities.

SINCE the beginning of .the year 1928 the senior authors and their associates have applied a series of procedures which makes possible the detailed study in situ of the formations traversed by a drill hole before the casing has been landed. They have given the name "electrical coring" to the ensemble of these processes, which now replace in a large measure the mechanical coring performed by the drillers, and permit the gathering of bottom-hole data hitherto unobtainable. Three years have elapsed since the technique and interpretation of these measurements emerged from the experimental stage and entered the field of industrial application on a large scale. The total length of drill holes so far surveyed by the authors and their associates, all over the world, amounts to several millions of feet. Practical and strongly built equipment has been evolved, which permits the examination in a short time of an open hole several thousand feet long. No comprehensive paper has yet been published discussing the essential principles of the processes applied and bringing into evidence their economic interest. This is the object of the present paper.1 Numerous examples of field work performed under varied geological conditions are given, constituting a concrete illustration of the services rendered by the new methods. The study in situ of the formations penetrated by a drill hole is based on the measurement of a given physical factor or parameter associated with these formations. Generally. the measurements are made syste-matically along the whole length of the open hole. The physical factors or parameters which are now utilized by us to this end are: (1) the resistivities of the rocks; (2) their porosity; (3) their electrical anisotropy; (4) their temperature; (5) the resistivity of the muds. The gamma-alpha transformation in iron and iron-rich alloys is of such practical and theoretical importance that many papers have been published upon the subject relating to critical temperatures, transformation rates and accompanying property changes. Although crystallo-graphic studies are of less immediate practical usefulness, the opportunities which these offer to furnish data on the basic atomic movements which characterize the transformation are not to be neglected1. The early work on the crystallography of this transformation has been reviewed in the fourth paper of this series2; since then several important papers have appeared. Our present knowledge may be briefly summarized as follows. Kurdjumow and Sachs, working with a 1.4 per cent carbon steel3, established the orientation relationships subsisting between the face-centered gamma and the metastable tetragonal lattices in freshly quenched martensite, and between the face-centered gamma and the body-centered alpha lattices in tempered martensite. The orientation relationship observed in the latter case may be stated in terms of planes and directions observed to lie parallel in the two lattices: {111} ?//{110}a [110] ?// [111]a (This notation is used throughout as the most descriptive means of expressing the fact that any (111) plane of the gamma phase may be parallel to any (110) plane of the alpha phase, and that a [110] direction in a particular (111)? plane is parallel to a [Ill] direction in the corresponding (110)a plane.) From these relationships the atomic movements that transform the gamma lattice into the alpha may be inferred. In the present experiment these may be considered as consisting primarily in a shear of the atoms parallel to the {111} planes in [110]? Directions

Introduction BODIES of pyritic ore in schistose rocks have long been known in different parts of the world. The several occurrences resemble each other in being usually of more or less lenticular shape, inclosed in walls of schist or gneiss, and carrying pyrite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite in varying proportions, as the chief ore minerals. The deposits differ, however, in that sometimes one, sometimes another, of the three sulphides mentioned may predominate. The orebodies in general are more or less closely conformable with the schistosity of the wall rocks, although in cases this may not hold true. The boundaries may or may not be sharp, but in general are fairly distinct. The lenses vary in size, may occur singly, or in groups; in the latter case they may be in line, overlapping, or occasionally parallel. Pinching and swelling of individual lenses is not uncommon. The genesis of these pyritic bodies has provoked much discussion, and they have been variously classed as sedimentary, igneous intrusions, hydrothermal replacements or impregnations, etc. Indeed, in some cases different geologists have most positively assigned widely diverse origins to the same deposit, as in the case of Rio Tinto 1 and Rammelsberg.2 It is true that in the light of modern criteria, we have been able in a few cases to decipher clearly the process of origin and so there seems no doubt now regarding the genesis of the deposits at Rio Tinto, Spain;3 Rammelsberg, Germany ;4 Ducktown, Tenn.;5 southwestern Virginia;6

THE problem of reaction rates in the open-hearth process is essentially that of trying to form a fairly clear picture of the "chemical mechanisms" in the bath. Quantitative data on reaction rates would not be very useful even if they were available; however, what few , approximate data there are, can be used in combination with data given in Chapters XVI and XVII to sketch a picture of the "chemical mechanics" of the open-hearth process that is consistent with essentially all the present available evidence. The result may later be found incorrect in many details but even so it will illustrate certain useful methods for obtaining a clearer understanding of the process. As discussed in the last portion of Chapter XIII chemical reactions in general involve the following factors: 1. The reacting molecules are mixed together in space in such fashion as to favor collisions among them. 2. A certain number of collisions occur per unit time among the reagent molecules, depending on their concentration and on temperature. 3. A certain percentage of these collisions result in reaction, these being the collisions between those molecules possessing at the moment energy levels above certain minimum values. The temperature factor enters mainly through (3), and its effect is very marked. (What is called temperature is really the mean energy content of all the molecules of the substance involved; at any one temperature a certain proportion of the molecules will have much higher energy content than the mean value.) Various reaction rates measured at around room temperatures have been found to be speeded from 1.6 to 4.0 times by an increase of only 15 to 20°F., simply because increasing temperature produces a rapidly increasing percentage of molecules with energy levels above the minimum needed to produce chemical reaction in a collision.

About fifty pages of Henry M. Howe&apos;s profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211). Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods SO that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent, of niekel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form (211). Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form (211) as sketched in Fig. 2. A COMPLETE discussion of the literature on the subject of the influence of copper on iron and steel will be published elsewhere.1 The present paper is concerned especially with the precipitation-hardening of copper steels, and brief mention will be made here only of the work of Kin-near,2,3 Nehl4 and Buchholtz and Koster,5 who alone have studied this phase of the subject. Kinnear found that normalized low-carbon steel castings containing about 1.0 per cent copper on drawing at temperatures in the neighbor-hood of 530° C. (1000° F.) increased in tensile strength and yield point, with little decrease in ductility. The maximum effect was obtained with about 0.9 to 1.0 per cent copper, and when the copper exceeded 3 per. cent no improvement occurred on reheating. Kinnear did not study the effect of time of reheating-an all important factor where precipitation is concerned. Nehl,6 who apparently was unaware of Kinnear&apos;s work, recognized the change as due to precipitation and studied the interdependence of time and temperature of reheating, the temperature of the initial solution heat treatment, and the speed of cooling necessary to retain the bulk of the copper in supersaturated solu-tion and to give an increase in hardness and tensile strength on reheating. Nehl found that if the final rolling or forging temperatures exceeded 700° C. (1300° F.) it was not necessary even to normalize the steel, but full precipitation occurred on merely reheating the forged or rolled shapes at 500° C. (930° F.).

TEN years ago, October, 1914, the author had the privilege of giving an-illustrated address on investigations of coal-dust explosions1 to this Institute at one session of its fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa. On the following day, the members had the opportunity of seeing a large-scale explosion test at the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, in which the explosion was made to follow a predetermined path by means of rock-dust barriers of various types, which had prevented the explosive waves from reaching the outlets of, the mine by the shortest paths.2 There was also shown a "home-made rock-dusting machine discharging the dust from a flexible nozzle, and a cement gun operated for the quick erection of a fire or ventilation stopping, such as might be put up after an explosion. Following that paper, there was presented a paper by J. Taffanel, Director of the Lievin testing station in the Pas de Calais, which reviewed the French coal-dust investigations.3 Another important paper was by Howard N. Eavenson, on Coal-mine Explosions Caused by Gas or Dust.4 This paper contains complete lists of explosions that occurred in North America and Great Britain, from early in the 19th century to 1912; in France to 1903, and in Belgium to 1909. No one can look over these lists without being struck by the great number of explosions and the, appalling aggregate of lives lost by them. Although they still happen, we-are hopeful that we have entered on a happier period of freedom from these dreaded visitations, as the result of great increase in knowledge; of the causes and means of prevention. Aluminum-base alloys containing small amounts of copper and magnesium possess but ordinary physical properties as sand cast, but may be treated to give a remarkable range of tensile values and of Brinell hardness. The high-copper (4.5 per cent.) duralumins must be given a protracted treatment which in nature resembles the malleableizing of white cast iron; the low-copper (2.25 per cent.) duralumins develop an excellent combination of strength and ductility with a treatment which requires a maximum of 5 hr. to be completed. THE wrought alloys of aluminum with small amounts of copper and of magnesium have, with the development of the automotive and aircraft industries, sprung into prominence through the medium of duralumin; but the cast alloys remained in the background because their possibilities in the heat-treated condition were either not recognized or not fully investigated. In 1919, the Bureau of Standards published a preliminary survey1 of this field, which pointed out that, in general, the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of the alloys of aluminum with and without magnesium could be improved by so simple a treatment as heating to 932° F. (500° C.) for 2 hr., cooling in, air, and aging at room temperature for several days. British investigators, too, working with chill-cast material, found that " considerable improvement in the mechanical properties of copper-aluminum alloys&apos; may be obtained from suitable heat treatment applied to castings."2 Jeffries and Gibson3 made the first contribution to the literature dealing exclusively with the heat treatment of sand-cast aluminum-base alloys, describing the effect of small additions or of combinations of copper, magnesium, and iron on the response to a short heat treatment comprising heating at 932° F. in a

A new method for determining rock drillability in diamond drilling is discussed; the method takes into consideration both penetration rate and bit wear. The method is based on drilling a rock specimen under controlled laboratory conditions using a model bit. The technique used for determining the experimental variables is extremely simple, quick, and reliable. Drillability is then determined by the mathematics of drilling. In considering the different factors that affect diamond drilling performance, the nature of the rock to be drilled is of outmost importance since it affects significantly the drilling costs and such other variables as bit type and design, drilling thrust, and bit rotary speed. Many attempts have been made to study this effect by correlating actual drilling performances either to certain physical properties of the rock being drilled1-? or to test drilling data obtained under laboratory conditions.7-13 These attempts were aimed at providing a reliable method of predicting by simple means the expected rock behavior in actual drilling, thus giving the engineer a tool to use in estimating drilling performances and costs in different types of rock. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a method by which rock drillability (a term used in the technical literature to describe rock behavior in drilling) could be determined in diamond drilling. It is believed that the proposed simple and reliable method will cover the need of the mining industry for a workable method of measuring the drillability of rocks. It should be emphasized, however, that since drill-ability depends on the physical properties of rock and each drilling process (diamond, percussive, rotary) is affected by different or partly different rock properties,14-l6 the proposed method of determining rock drillability cannot be extended to the other drilling processes. The results presented in this paper form part of an extensive three-year research program carried out by the author in the laboratories of the Greek Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research. During this period the effects of the physical properties of rocks and of such operational variables as drilling thrust and bit rotary speed in diamond drilling were investigated in detail. DRILLABILITY CONCEPT The literature is not devoid of drillability studies. While there are a number of investigators1,3,5-7,9-0,12-13,17 who have attempted to establish by direct methods (i.e., drilling tests under laboratory conditions) or indirect (i.e., through a physical property of rock) an index from which the drilling performance in a given rock may be estimated, very few6-7,9,12, of the proposed methods seem to be of much practical value to the diamond drilling engineer and none to date has been universally accepted. Commenting on the proposed methods for assessing rock drillability, Fish14 remarks that "for a measure of drillability to be accepted it is essential that penetration rate at a given thrust and bit life are elucidated as otherwise the method is of little value." This statement should be examined in more detail by making use of the penetration rate-drilling time diagram obtained in drilling a rock under constant operational conditions. Furthermore, the merits of using this diagram to describe rock drillability will be pointed out. At the same time reference will be made to this diagram when discussing some previously proposed methods. Fig. 1 illustrates such a diagram for three rocks,A, B, and C, which have been diamond drilled under identical conditions. It is assumed here that rocks A and B have the same initial penetration rate, i.e., VOA = Vog, but since rock B is more abrasive than A, rapid bit wear occurs and as a result the fall of its penetration rate with respect to time is more vigorous than in rock A. This is shown graphically by a steeper V = f(t) (0 curve in this rock than in rock A. Rock C has a lower initial penetration rate, due to higher strength properties16 but since it is not very abrasive, only a slight fall of its penetration rate occurs during drilling (in this category are some limestone and marbles with compressive strength above 1000 kg per sq cm). It follows from the foregoing considerations that the characteristic for each rock curve (I) is a function of (i), the penetration rate of the rock Vo recorded at the instant of commencing drilling, which determines the starting point of the curve (1) on the y-axis and (ii), the abrasive rock properties which determine the rate of fall of Vo with respect to time. Thus, curve (I) provides an actual picture of the rock behavior in drilling for given operational conditions, and it can be used with complete satisfaction to assess rock drillability. ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe&apos;s profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neu-mann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2. was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form 12111. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2. Eveleth Taconite Co. was chartered on July 29, 1963, and is 85% owned by Ford Motor Co. and 15% by Oglebay Norton Co. The latter also serves as managing agent. The location of the company&apos;s facilities is depicted in Fig. 1. The Thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minn. (Fig. 2). The Fairlane plant and General Office are located approximately 10 miles south on the St. Louis River near the community of Forbes (Figs. 3 and 4). The crude ore and the finished pellets are transported by a common carrier railroad, the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. The facilities are also serviced by the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railway Co. Pellets are hauled year around by the DM&IR to its docks 60 miles south in Duluth, Minn. Ford Motor Co. consumes its share of the high grade pellets at its Rouge plant in Dearborn, Mich., and Oglebay Norton Co. sells its share in the open market. HISTORY Following six months of preliminary engineering by the initial staff of Eveleth Taconite Co. and the Western Knapp Engineering Div. of Arthur G. McKee & Co., the project was approved by Eveleth&apos;s board of directors on Apr. 17, 1964. On May 1, 1964, contracts were awarded to McKee for the mine, coarse and fine crushing and concentrating facilities, and to Allis-Chalmer for the pelletizing facilities.
