5. Crystallography. - The subject of Crystallography includes the description of the characters of crystals in general; of the various forms of crystals and their division into classes and systems; of the methods of studying crystals, including the determination of the mathematical relations of their faces, and the measurement of the angles between them; finally, a description of compound or twin crystals, of irregularities in crystals, of crystal- line aggregates, and of pseudomorphous crystals. 6. Definition of a Crystal.- A crystal * is the regular polyhedral form, bounded by smooth surfaces, which is assumed by a chemical compound, under the action of its intermolecular forces, when passing, under suitable conditions, from the state of a liquid or gas to that of a solid. As expressed in the foregoing definition, a crystal is characterized, first, by its definite internal molecular structure, and, second, by its external form. A crystal is the normal form of a mineral species, as of all solid chemical com- pounds; but the conditions suitable for the formation of a crystal of ideal perfection in symmetry of form and smoothness of surface are never fully realized. Further, many species usually occur not in distinct crystals, but in massive form, and in some exceptional cases the definite molecular structure is absent. 7. Molecular Structure in General.- By definite molecular structure is meant the special arrangement which the physical units, called molecules, assume under the action of the forces exerted between them during the formation of the solid. Some remarks are given in a later article (p. 22 et seq.) in regard to the kinds of molecular arrangement theoretically possible, and their relation to the symmetry of the different systems and classes of crystals.

THE 1941 fall meeting of the Iron and Steel and the Institute- of Metal, Division held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Philadelphia, during the first three days (Oct. 20-22) of the National Metal Congress was well attended as usual, and the seven technical sessions and the joint round table on order-disorder transformations were this year of considerably more than routine interest. Despite unseasonably warm weather, a scarcity of hotels (there were rumors, apparently well-founded, that , some of the metal man attending the Congress had to stay in tourist camp), and a multiplicity of technical and other ions of the co-operating societies that gave the Congress this year the general air of a three-ring circus the A.I.M.E. sessions attracted audiences that ragged from seventy or eighty up to 350

FOR the past three years, the senior writer has carried out, with inter-ruptions, a series of investigations into the characteristics of prospecting seismographs of a wide variety of construction. Early in 1932, a com-plete equipment was developed for both refraction and reflection observa-tions; its first function being, however, the application in reflection shooting. The performance of the equipment proved to be highly satis-factory in a series of field tests' which were carried out by the junior writer, whose services were loaned to the Colorado School of Mines by courtesy of the Plains Exploration Co. in Denver. The various problems that were encountered in the construction of the equipment, in its application in the field, and in the interpretation of the results, are fully treated in Publication 47 of the Department of Geophysics of the Colorado School of Mines. Its first part deals with the various problems encountered in the design of the instruments, and presents a discussion of such topics as the free and forced oscillations of damped and undamped mechanical seismographs, the action of oscil-lographic recording instruments and amplifiers, the characteristics of electromagnetic seismographs, and the requirements of damping, natural frequencies and static magnification for the pickups, amplifiers and oscillographs used in refraction and reflection seismographs. Further-more, a detailed discussion of the various methods of static and dynamic tests of seismic receivers, and a description of the reflection equipment developed at the School of Mines is presented. Unfortunately, a delay has occurred in the publication of the first part of this investigation concerning the instrument problems. There-fore, the second part, dealing with the field problems, is herewith pre-sented first.

Extrusion of aluminum alloys in this country is performed mainly by direct extrusion, therefore this paper is confined only to factors affecting the rate of extrusion by this method. Many factors affect the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to present a discussion on the factors that are subject to technical control. Most of them are closely related, so that a clear-cut distinction between them is rather difficult. However, an attempt will be made to evaluate the effect of each factor separately, as far as possible. The most important factors only will be considered, and these will be discussed in detail under three general headings: (I) characteristics of the equipment, (2) size and structure of the ingot, and (3) temperature of ingot, cylinder, and other parts. It is a well established fact1 that the pressure and the speed of extrusion are related and are exponential functions of one another. Therefore, whenever a certain condition tends, for instance, to increase the pressure required for extrusion, it will reduce the extrusion speed if the pressure is maintained constant. For this reason, in this paper the effect of various conditions is expressed either in regard to their effect on the pressure required or the extrusion speed. Another established fact is the relation- ship between the temperature of the material being extruded and the pressure required to extrude. According to Schi-shokin,= this relationship is of the exponential type, and as the temperature is increased the pressure required is decreased. It would seem from the preceding that the greatest rates of extrusion can be obtained by the use of higher temperatures. However, as is well known, other factors intervene to limit the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys when increasing the temperature. These factors will be discussed in detail later. Characteristics of the Equipment The capacity of the press determines * the maximum unitary pressure that can be applied for any given cylinder diameter. Pressures used for extrusion of aluminum alloys range from approximately 50,000 lb. per sq. in. to 150,000 lb. per sq. in., dependent upon the alloy and the size of the shape extruded. Higher pressures could be used to advantage, but existing steels limit pressures employed in the production of extrusions. Numerous mechanical characteristics of the extrusion press affect extrusion rate. The most important characteristics of the press itself are: (I) sensitivity of the main pressure valve and accuracy of pressure gauges, (2) accuracy of equipment to heat the cylinder uniformly and to control cylinder temperature, and (3) accuracy of means of measuring the speed of extrusion. The variables subject to control during the extrusion operation are pressure, temperature, and speed, and it is evident that the preceding characteristics

ZINC metallurgists continue to follow with keen interest reports of successful results from the continuous retort plants at Palmerton, Pa., and Meadowbrook. W. Va. The new process had already demonstrated its ability to reduce the lead content of the metal and to effect savings in labor and fuel. The past year has shown that the retorts themselves can he built to last long enough so that the retort cost per ton of metal is lower than in past practice with small horizontal re- torts. A number of the latest type of retorts are reported to have been in continuous operation for over 18 months without a failure and are said to be still in good condition. This seems a complete answer to the last question which remained before continuous zinc smelting could he pronounced commercially practicable.

Ox completing the filtration of a solution of pig-iron in hydrochloric acid, and after apparently everything had been transferred to the paper, a minute residue was observed remaining in the angle of the beaker in which the solution had been made. This residue had a steel-gray color and metallic luster and was hard and gritty when touched with a glass rod. Placed under a microscope and magnified 400 diameters, the substance was found to be made up almost entirely of opaque cubical crystals with some fragments having the same color and luster as the cubes. The appearance was strikingly like that of a collection of crystals of iron pyrites. The amount of material obtained from ten to twenty grams of borings by solution in dilute hydrochloric acid, and careful decantation from graphite, was barely sufficient for a microscopic slide. A qualitative test of the minute amount of material obtained in this way, showed the presence of considerable titanium. After many fruitless trials by decantation and other methods, sufficient material for quantitative analysis was finally obtained in the following manner: Two hundred and fifty grams of the coarsest possible borings were dissolved in seven liters of hydrochloric acid of sp. gr. 1.03. A solution by the aid of heat took four to five hours. It was allowed to settle, and the clear solution poured off. Great care was taken that none of the material which had settled to the bottom was lost. The graphitic residue was then completely transferred upon fine bolting-cloth, previously Stretched and fastened over the top of a beaker. All graphitic lumps were broken up by the finger while

THE mechanical behavior of metals and alloys is presumably conditioned by two factors; namely, the crystalline symmetry and the interatomic forces. Considerable attention has been given to the first of these factors through the recent advances in X-ray technique. It is the purpose of the present paper to call attention to the importance of the second of these factors, to point out promising methods of investigation, and to present some pertinent data. Plastic deformation takes place by slip along atomic planes.1 This slip may be inhibited in a number of ways: by the interatomic forces of cohesion which bind the atoms rigidly in a lattice structure, which in pure metals is usually of high symmetry; by lattice distortion caused by solid solution formation or by mechanical strain; by the intercrystalline boundaries where slip is restrained, probably by the non-registration of the atom planes in adjacent crystallites;2 and by the presence of small hard particles which serve to "key" the slip along the atom planes.3 In pure metals, and perhaps also in solid solutions, the atom planes of easiest slip are those exhibiting the greatest density of atomic population and the greatest interplanar distance4 and apparently can now be predicted from the analysis of the lattices. Concerning the interatomic forces, which resist this slip by holding the atoms firmly together, little is known. Most textbooks on physical metallurgy, following the work of Bottone,5 correlate the hardness of the pure metals with the atomic volume,

Aluminum single crystals were pulled in an electrolytic cell allowing surface removal during the deformation. The extent of Stages I and 11 of the stress-st-aitz curve was increased and the slope decreased as the rate of metal removed from the surface was increased. An increase of the strain rate caused a decrease in the effectiveness of the metal removal. The data indicate that the work-hardening coefficient in Stage I is determined primarily by the conditions which exist on the surface of the crystal. In Stages 11 and 111, both surface effects and internal barriers are important. ALTHOUGH numerous investigations have been conducted on the plastic flow characteristics of metals in an attempt to explain the mechanism of work-hardening, relatively few studies have taken into account the influence of the surface. In all current theories of work-hardening it is assumed that the impediments to the movement of dislocations are within the crystal. The barriers due to the surface and the existence of solid and liquid films have been neglected even though it has been demonstrated that the surface exerts a large effect. A number of investigators1-l8 have shown that solid films on the surface of single crystals markedly affect their mechanical behavior. In general, the presence of a solid film tends to increase the yield stress and increase the work-hardening rate. Often, on single crystals, Stage I and, at times, Stage II regions are completely suppressed. Various mechanisms have been offered for the effects of oxide and metal films as well as the influence of electrolytes. Of these, concepts concerned with the locking of surface dislocation sources and the blocking of dislocations at the surface resulting in pileups appear to be actively considered at present. Barrett,11 Takamura,6 Gilman,19 Lipsett and King,20 Shapiro and Read,10 and Weiner and Gensamer21 are among those who have interpreted their results in terms of piled-up dislocations at the surface, while Adams.22 and Chalmers and Davis23 have explained their experimental observations in terms of locking of surface dislocation sources. In general, the change in plastic flow properties due to electrolytes has been explained in terms of the unblocking or unlocking of dislocations by the removal of the oxide films. In considering the two proposed mechanisms, it appears that the locking of sources of surface dislocations by a solid film should exert a primary influence only on the critical resolved shear stress for flow and not on the slopes of Stages I and 11. However, the blocking at the surface of dislocations from internal sources may also affect the critical resolved stress and furthermore exert an influence throughout the whole plastic range. In certain cases it does not seem feasible to explain the results of experimental observations in terms of locking of surface dislocation sources. The abnormal aftereffects found by Barrettll,12 by removing the oxide by an acid treatment are excellent evidence of the blocking of dislocations at the surface. Additional evidence in favor of a blocking due to a pileup of dislocations at the surface may be found from the observations that the critical resolved shear strength continues to increase with the thickness of the oxide layer until very heavy oxide layers are formed. If the locking of surface dislocations sources were the dominant factor, the critical resolved shear stress would not be expected to increase after all of the surface sources were locked by the formation of the oxide. This may be expected to happen after a few atomic layers of the oxide are formed. In spite of the above evidence on the strong influence of the surface on the plastic flow characteristic, this has been ignored in current theories of work-hardening. Seeger24,25 suggested that most of the dislocations may slip out of the crystal only when the specimen axis is within certain areas of the orientation triangle. In other areas the resolved shear stress in other glide systems is large enough to generate dislocations which can form Lomer-Cottrell locks, thereby decreasing the average slip distance in some directions and causing a larger hardening rate. Friede126 assumed that at the beginning of Stage 11, a large number of Lomer-Cottrell dislocations are formed by a catastrophic process which used up all the Frank-Read sources on the secondary slip-planes. In this manner a fixed number of Lomer-Cottrell locks is formed which act as barriers against which the dislocations can pile up. In Stage 111, Seeger24 and Diehl, Mader, and Seeger25 proposed that Lomer-Cottrell barriers are circumvented by the cross slip of extended screw dislocations. Cottrell and Stokes,27 Friedel,26 Cottrell,26 and stroh29 suggest that the Lomer-Cottrell dislocations collapse under the stress field of the dislocation pileup. IN underground mining recent trends toward mining large tonnages of low-grade ore have created, among other things, a need for cheaper and more flexible ore transport. A relatively new development has been the adaptation of shaker conveyors to meet this need. Although widely used in coal mining, only in the last few years have shaker conveyors been used in underground metal mining. The equipment consists of a driving engine, either electric or air powered, upon which is mounted a drive trough supported in ball-bearing frames. The trough line, or conveying medium, is made up of a number of sections, each section connected to another, usually with bolts. The length of each trough section is controlled by the length that can best be handled underground, but is usually from 9 to 13 ft over-all. The length of a complete conveyor line is determined by the character and weight of material to be handled as well as by the size of the ore body. Trough lines vary in lengths from 100 to 300 ft and the trough has a cross-section area of 127 sq in., and is 22 in. wide by 6 ½ in. deep.

THOUGH recent months have seen a rapid decline in lead-smelting activity and consequent uncertainty as to the future, the first half of the year showed progress in keeping with similar activity in other metals. Demand for scrap increased and various lead-bearing materials found their way to plants producing secondary lead. Some of these materials introduced complications into normal smelting procedure and were the cause of many conferences among plant officials attempting to find the most satisfactory method of treatment. If a blast furnace is to do itself justice it must be run with an open charge. Troubles inevitably result when materials are added to a charge which tighten it up and pre- vent free burning of the coke and con- sequent rapid smelting with a clean hearth This fact has long been recognized by plants producing primary lead, but only recently only it received the attention it deserves.

Cementation rates ulere studied by rotating an elec-tropolished or etched copper strip in aqueous solutions, of either perchloric acid or alkaline cyanide, containing silver ions. The rates of cementation were more rapid in acidic media than in cyanide media. In both, the rates varied with the rate of rotation of the copper strip. The deposits formed in the acidic solutions were finely divided, loosely adhering powders. Those formed in the cyanide solutions were dense and adherent. The presence of the deposits influenced the cementation rates. In the acidic solutions the rate was enhanced, possibly because of the increased cathodic area. In the alkaline solutions the rates were decreased in the presence of the deposits. This has been attributed to restricting the diffusion of the copper ion from the rnetal outward into the bulk of the solution. In an earlier paper1 the authors described a kinetic study of the cementation of palladium on copper in perchloric acid solutions. That work indicated that there were two stages in the palladium cementation process. The first, more rapid stage was consistent with rate control by the diffusion of Pd11 ions to the copper surface and/or by chemical reaction at the surface. The second stage was consistent with rate control by the diffusion of copper ions from the copper surface, through the deposit, out into the main body of solution. The effect of the type of deposit on the rate of cementation is of particular interest because it may be one of the primary features involved when large quantities of metal are to be cemented from solution. No substantial investigations of the effect seem to have been made. Accordingly, an extension of the previous work was arranged to study the cementation of silver on copper. This system was selected because of the convenience of the analytical methods, the previously established technology with copper, and the fact that the system could be studied in both acidic and alkaline media. By selecting perchloric acid and alkaline cyanide solutions as the media, it was hoped that some assessment might be made of the effects, on cementation, of having the silver ion present in a virtually uncomplexed state and in a highly complexed state. EXPERIMENTAL The cementation rates were studied, as previously described,' by rotating a copper strip (1.0 by 23.2 cm) clamped to the peripheral surface of a lucite cylinder. The solutions were kept at constant temperatures (±0.05°C) under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, and samples were taken periodically for analysis. The initial solution volume was 1000 ml and the sample volume 5 ml. The initial silver(1) ion concentrations were made low (0.5 to 1.0 x 10-4 moles per liter) to minimize the influence of the cemented deposit on rates. The solutions were prepared by dilution of suitable aliquots of silver perchlorate and silver cyanide stock solutions. Both stock solutions were prepared from purified silver powder (Johnson, Matthey, and Mallory Ltd.) with redistilled deoxygenated water, and they were kept under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. To prepare the stock solutions, weighed amounts of silver powder were dissolved with nitric acid. For the AgC104 stock solution the silver nitrate solution was evaporated twice to near dryness with perchloric acid and then made up to volume: For the NaAg(cN)2 stock solution, the silver ions were precipitated with sodium hydroxide solution. The precipitate was filtered, washed thoroughly with redistilled water, dissolved with 1.1 times the required stoichiometric amount of sodium cyanide solution, and made up to volume. The small amounts of free perchloric acid and sodium cyanide present in the stock solutions were disregarded in the preparation of the solutions. The copper strips were cut accurately from 0.025-in. sheet (American Metal Climax OFHC brand) and annealed for 1.5 hr at 470°C in a stream of nitrogen. Analyses of the solution samples for silver and copper were done with a Techtron Model AA-3 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Calibration standards of the same composition as the experimental solutions were prepared and analyzed simultaneously with the samples. No difficulty was experienced in the analyses, and the reproducibility was within 1 to 2 pct in both alkaline cyanide and perchloric acid solutions.

A PREVIOUS paper1 reviewed some of the properties of clays and shales and presented some data on the nature of the gelling phenomenon. It included a brief discussion of origin of clays and shales, their com-position, structure, retention of water, ionization, base exchange, and the nature of the gelling of water suspensions, Other publications of the Institute2-8 have discussed the properties of clays and their relations to drilling-fluid behavior and control. It is the purpose of this article to present some new data obtained and arranged in a different manner and making possible a better understanding of the chemical reactions involved in the control of drilling-fluid characteristics during the normal drilling operations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The difficulties involved in the measurements of the flow character-istics of plastic fluids are too familiar to recite, The possible applications of some of the well-known instruments to this problem have been ade-quately discussed by Hobson9 and he has given an excellent bibliography. Although there are many viscosimeters of varied design, none of them appear to fulfill the most obvious demands of accuracy in the measure-ment of clay or shale suspensions, Since the fluid characteristics are dependent on the rate of flow of the fluid, and the viscosity usually falls off very rapidly as the rate is increased, it is clear that the first require-ment is that the instrument shall be capable of a wide variety of speeds. The viscosity of the fluid at any fixed and constant rate of flow is also a function of time, so that the second demand is that the instrument shall be capable of a constant and continuous motion for a prolonged period of time.

IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical charac- teristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained.

THE purpose of the Coal Division's Committee on Ventilation is to cover one principal aspect of mine ventilation thoroughly each year, instead of attempting to touch upon several different subjects. The Committee for 1943 consists of four members besides the Chairman. Members, selected because of both knowledge of the current topic of mine ventilation, and diversity of occupation, are: Carel Robinson, consulting engineer with an operating background; T. G. Fear, chief engineer for the Hanna Coal Co., an operator of varied experience in mine ventilation; E. H. Denny, chief of the coal mine inspection division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, obviously well qualified; and C. M. Smith, editor of Mechanization with a background of mine ventilation study as a member of the mining department of the University of Illinois, at present retained as a ventilation consultant by the Climax. EVERY engineer and user of wire rope is desirous of information that will enable him to determine whether the performance of any particular piece of rope is satisfactory, and what conditions can be changed so as to increase the life of a rope. In most cases, it is far from easy to analyze the conditions of service and tell which is the greatest factor in determining the life of wire rope. If we start on a layout for an entirely new rope system, the task of making conditions satisfactory is simplified so far as the engineering details are concerned; but if the plant requiring wire rope is in operation, any change is likely to involve the expenditure of consider-, able money to replace and change over machinery that must be kept in constant operation, because a large monetary loss will result from a shutdown for even a few days. Often wire rope is kept operating under bad conditions, as the user thinks that it is cheaper and quicker to replace the rope than to make alterations in the hoisting machinery. A typical case is a metal mine operating in what is now almost the center of a large mining city, where it owns a few acres of mineral rights. It was expected that the shaft would go to a depth of 1000 ft. (305 m.), so a moderate sized rope, about 1 ¼ in. (31.7 mm.), was used on a 6-ft. drum with a 7-ft. head-frame sheave and rather short lead from drum to head sheave. This mine has gone deeper each year until, it is now 2500 ft. deep and the rope speed has been increased from 1500 ft. per min. to over 3000 ft. The original rope just filled the drum in one layer, now it overwinds three layers. The original ropes were probably 6 X 19 crucible steel and lasted from 12 to 18 mo.; now, the highest grade plow steel is used, yet the average service is only about 6 mo. The cause is not hard to find. If the engineers had known at the outset what would be done with this hoist, the design would have been very different. Conditions at this mine, from a wire rope standpoint, have gradually become worse and it is difficult to see how rope service on this hoist can be com-pared with the service of previous years with any fairness to the wire-

THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.

IN the course of a general investigation of boride systems, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, various vanadium boride powders of relatively good purity were prepared which could be used for a determination of the phases present. The X-ray pattern of one of these lots showed, in addition to the known VB1 and VB22 phases, an additional phase, almost certainly of composition V3B4, isomorphous with Cr3B4, Cb3B4, Ta3B4, and Mn3B,. Its pattern fitted in well with the indices worked out by Kiessling for Mr3B4.3 The unit cell for this new compound is orthorhombic, with the dimensions a = 3.030A, b = 13.18A, c = 2.986A7 V=119.2A.' Table I lists the X-ray diffraction data for V.3,.

THE treatment of Balbach-Thum slimes at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining. Co. is of interest because it differs considerably from methods usually employed for the recovery of fine gold from parting-plant slimes. Owing to the comparatively high percentages of pal-ladium and platinum, wet methods are used to remove the greater proportion f these metals before electrolytic refining in the Wohlwill cells. THE PLANT The platinum-metals department, Wohlwill room, and gold-melting room extend along the north side f the silver refinery and are separated from the parting plant by a glass partition (Figs. 1 and 2). The platinum-metals department resembles a laboratory built on a large scale, with the various pieces of equipment laid out on terraces to facilitate handling. Because of the corrosive nature of the solutions, chemical stoneware is used throughout. Elevation of acids is accom-plished by means of Mariotte bottles. On the top level are three steam-jacketed stoneware kettles of 50-gal. capacity, also a packed tower. One kettle is used for digesting the slimes while the remaining kettles are used for precipitating the gold. The dissolver is equipped with a treated concrete hood, which is connected to the flue system. Gases are drawn off through the packed tower by means of a 6-in. stoneware exhaust fan. A 15 per cent solution of sodium carbonate is continually circulated through the tower. On the intermediate level are two suction filters, one for removing silver chloride and the other for the gold sand. The filter medium consists of an asbestos pad covered with a filter paper on which is a layer of twill.

THE growing importance of metallography has caused a corresponding interest in the improvement of apparatus for preparing specimens of metals and alloys for microscopic examination. The purpose of this paper is to describe an electric heating-furnace, a grinding-and-polishing machine, and a device for mounting specimens, which are used in the metallographical work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These three pieces of apparatus were designed and made in the laboratory of the Institute, and. each possesses some original features which may be of interest. ELECTRIC HEATING-FURNACE., The accurate control of heat necessary for metallographic work is best obtained by the electric-resistance furnace. Unfortunately, however, even the platinum-wound furnaces deteriorate with use and ultimately burn out, while the cheaper resistance-materials are often short-lived. Since the resistance-coil must be replaced from time to time, it is of advantage to be able to make this change with as little trouble as possible, and this is an important feature in the furnace shown in Fig. 1.
