THE principal manganese deposit of Russia, I one of the four principal sources of the world's supply, lies on the southern slope of the Caucasus Mountains, in what is now the Republic of Georgia, district of Sharopan. Tchiatouri, the principal town, is midway between Tiflis, the capital of Georgia, and Poti, the shipping port on the Black Sea, about 130 " miles distant. The deposit can be most easily visualized by thinking of a nearly horizontal coal seam about 6 ft. thick, outcropping on the slopes about 600 ft. above the Kvirila River. One of the accompanying illustrations shows the river, which nearly bi- sects the district, of approximately 50 sq. miles in area, and with its tributary streams makes the topography rugged, while in the background are the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus range. Another of the illustrations gives a closer view of the outcrop. The roof and floor of the deposit are good, so the methods of working are quite similar to working a coal seam, especially as most of the mineral is soft enough to be mined with a pick. Little machinery is used, except small cars for underground transportation.

I. INTRODUCTORY. THE plans for the investigation of fuels and structural materials now being conducted by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey were, before being decided upon by the Director of the Survey, submitted for consideration to the National Advisory Board, upon which there are nine representatives from the membership of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, viz.: Messrs. John Hays Hammond, Robert W. Hunt, B. F. Bush, and E. V. d'Invilliers (representing the Institute); Messrs. Julian Kennedy and C. S. Robinson (representing the Iron and Steel Institute); Dr. Charles B. Dudley (representing the American Society for Testing Materials); Mr. F. H. Newell (representing the U. S. Reclamation Service); and Dr. Richard Moldenke (representing the American Foundrymen's Association). It seems fitting, therefore, that a report of these investigations of the past three years should be submitted to the Institute for publication in its Transactions. The above, together with other representatives of the national engineering societies and allied organizations, were invited by President Roosevelt to serve, along with the Chiefs of the several Government Bureaus who have charge of public works and large. fuel purchases, on the National Advisory Board to give advice concerning these investigations. The appointment of this National Board grew out of a wish on the part of the President, the Secretary of the Interior, and the Director of the Geological Survey not only that the appropriations for these investigations be expended in a manner most beneficial to the several branches of the government

THE presence of an excessive amount of tough froth in the flotation of minerals, particularly coals, may create trouble in dewatering, filtering, and handling. Froth is also a nuisance in many chemical industries.' This paper presents a study on the destruction of extremely tough froths with intense high-frequency sound. The data indicate that sound waves can be employed for continuous atandsoundwavescan instantaneous defrothing. A powerful high-frequency siren was used in obtaining the data. Also tested was an ultrasonorator of the crystal type with a frequency range of 400, 700, 1000, and 1500 kc per sec and a maximum power output from its amplifier of 198 w. The results, not presented, indicate that as now designed this machine is not suitable for defrothing. Although the sound generators of the magnetostriction type2,3 and of the electromagnetic type'.' were not available, it is beelectromagneticlieved they are capable of producing the required sound intensity for defrothing. The use of ultrasonics for defrothing was suggested by Ross and McBain1 in 1944. Ramsey8 reported in 1948 that E. H. Rose mentioned a supersonic device that broke down flotation froth but with low capacity. The writer has not been able to find any published literature containing practical experiments. Theoretical Considerations The mechanism of defrothing by sound is attributed to the periodically collapsing force of the propagated sound waves and the induced resonant vibration of the bubbles. The collapse of froth is further facilitated by the sonic wind and the heat of the siren. Sound waves can exert a radiation pressure'," against any obstacle upon which they impinge. When a froth surface is subjected to the periodic puncturing of sound waves, the bubbles are broken. According to Rayleigh9 and Bergmann,12 the radiation pressure of sound, P, in dynes per sq cm is given as: P = 1/2 (r+1)i/v where r is the ratio of the specific heats of the medium through which sound is traveling and is equal to 1 on the basis of Boyle's law; i is the sound intensity in ergs per sec per sq cm, and v is the sound velocity in cm per sec. In this case, the accuracy of the formula is only approximate, because a perfect reflection can hardly result from a column of froth. In addition to the radiation pressure, the propagated sound waves cause the bubbles of the froth to have a resonant vibration.'" he vibratory motion of the bubbles causes collision and coalescence, thereby weakening if not breaking the bubble walls. Sonic wind and heat were also generated." The sonic wind can exert pressure on the froth surface, and the heat can evaporate the moisture content of the bubble walls as well as expand the enclosed air. Apparatus The defrothing apparatus, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a powerful high-frequency siren, a glass or stainless steel beaker of 2-liter capacity with 12.4 cm diam and 17.1 cm height, and a metal reflector. The beaker was placed 2 in. above the top point of the siren. The metal reflector was adjusted to reflect and focus the generated sound waves into the central part of the beaker. Fig. 2 shows the crystal probe microphone used to measure the acoustic intensity and the mandler bacteriological filter employed to introduce compressed air into the beaker for frothing. The apparatus was enclosed in a soundproof cabinet equipped with a glass window. The siren, shown in Fig. 3, consists of a rotor that interrupts the flow of air through the orifices in a stator. The rotor, a 6-in. diam disk with 100 equally spaced slots, is driven by a 2/3 hp, Dumore W2 motor at 133 rps. The frequency of the siren can be varied from 3 to 34 kc. The maximum chamber pressure is about 2 atm, yielding acoustic outputs of approximately 2 kw at an efficiency of about 20 pct. The siren itself is relatively small and can be operated in any orientation. A detailed description of the siren has been given by Allen and Rudnick.11 Collapse of Froth To study the sequence of the collapse of froth, the glass beaker was partially filled with 920 cc water, 100 g of —150 mesh bituminous coal, 0.3 cc petroleum light oil, 0.2 cc pine oil and 1.54 cc Pyrene foam compound. IN the early stages of design it was not considered necessary that separate crushing plants be built for the new sulphide concentrator and smelter until sometime in the future. The plan was to use the existing crushing facilities for both oxide and sulphide ore. A few additions were contemplated for the existing plants, such as increased bin capacity, and possibly two new secondary crushing units. The more the problem was studied and discussed with the plant operators, the more it became evident that it was complex. It involved the classification of different kinds of ore from the open pit mine -sulphide, oxide and mixed-and how best to separate them so that each kind of ore was given the proper processing and treatment. It also involved the problem of keeping the different ores from being contaminated in bins, hoppers and chutes. Added to these, transportation became complicated and would involve additional handling and loading of ore from crushing plants to conveyors, to bins, and finally to railroad cars which were to be hauled to the concentrator and dumped into the fine ore bin. General In the early part of 1951 it was decided that the concentrator be constructed with ten grinding units instead of seven as originally authorized. The smelter was to be increased proportionally and naturally also the overall tonnages of ore to be handled by the new sulphide plant. Due to this increase in plant capacity and the larger tonnages involved, the difficulties which would arise by using the existing crushing plants were increased to a point where it became evident that the building of new crushing plants for sulphide ore exclusively was technically, as well as economically, advantageous. Authorization was, therefore, given by the company to construct new crushing plants to handle 30,000 tons of ore per day, and capable of reducing the run-of-open-pit ore to the proper size feed for the 10x14-ft rod mills in the concentrator. The ore, mined in the open pit, sometimes comes in pieces as large as 6 to 7 ft diam. The rod mills may call for ore crushed to 3/4 in. The large .size of ore delivered from the open pit determined that a 60-in. gyratory crusher be used as primary breaker. Such a crusher will have a capacity considerably in excess of 30,000 tons per day. The crusher will be a single discharge unit driven by a 500-hp electric motor through a tear coupling and a floating shaft. This type of drive has proven successful at a number of other crusher installations which our company has operating in the United States, Mexico and South America. The tear coupling will protect both the crusher and motor against damage in case of overload. No new features are incorporated in the design of the crusher itself, except that the, discharge chute is made the full width of the crusher with parallel sides instead of the usual converging sides. This change in detail should eliminate, a feature which has been a bottleneck in some of the operating plants and has caused loss of production due to ore hanging up and blocking the chute. The secondary crushing plants will have three 7-ft standard Symons cone crushers and six 7-ft short head Symons crushers. Between the primary and secondary crushing plants a coarse ore bin will be constructed with a nominal draw-off capacity of 30,000 tons of ore. The standard Symons and the short head Symons will be in separate buildings. All the crushing plants and the coarse ore bin are interconnected with conveyor belts for transporting the ore to the crushers at the tonnage rate desired. The final product of the new crushing plants is produced by the short head crushers. It will be delivered onto a conveyor belt leading to the top of the fines ore bin in the concentrator. A separate conveyor belt running the full length of the fines ore bin and provided with a movable tripper of rugged design will discharge the sulphide ore into the bin. The concentrator bin is planned and designed so that the installation of this additional conveyor will not interfere with the operation of the two railroad tracks on which crushed ore is brought from the existing oxide plant. Thus when completed the bin can be filled simultaneously by ore from the new crushing plant and by ore from the existing leaching plant.

The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

Considerable efforts have been expended to apply multiple regression techniques to quantitative determinations in x-ray fluorescence analysis. Multiple regression has been shown to be an effective method for correlating x-ray fluorescence intensities to elemental concentrations. Although many other techniques have been devised to solve the problem of matrix effects in x-ray fluorescence analysis, there are few as efficient in terms of storage requirement or ease of programming for digital computers as the multiple regression method. In the case of ore slurry, it has the additional advantage of allowing a unified approach to the problems of slurry density correction and matrix effect corrections. The data used in the present work were obtained with an on-stream x-ray analyzer capable of analyzing 15 slurry streams for as many as nine elements simultaneously. One of its fixed monochromators was set to accept scattered radiation at a discretely selected wavelength as a means of monitoring the slurry's pulp density. The data were reduced to obtain the correlation equations and a computer program combining slurry density with matrix corrections was written in FORTRAN IV to calculate concentrations.

THE New River coal-field embraces that portion of the Appalachian coal formation which lies on the waters of the New River, principally in Fayette and Raleigh counties, West Virginia, covering a strip of territory about forty miles in length along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad from Quinnimont to Kanawha Falls, where the New River empties into the Kanawha, the railroad following the banks of the river the whole distance. (See map.) Between Kanawha Falls and the Valley of the Ohio lies the great Kanawha region, and these two coal-fields possess a greater variety of coal than can be found in any other portion of the country, enabling them to furnish the best fuels for any of the various demands of manufacture or domestic use, the Kanawha region possessing many varieties of gas, hard splint, and cannel coal, and the New River region bituminous and semi-bituminous, steam and coking coal. The New River, in its westward course towards the Kanawha, has cut its way entirely through the Seral conglomerate or No. XII of the Pennsylvania Reports, the Umbral red shales of No. XI appearing at the foot of the mountains at the eastern end of the region at Quinnimont, one of the upper ledges of the Conglomerate forming the summits; while at the western end, at Kanawha Falls, the top of the Conglomerate is nearly down to the level of the river, a portion of the " Lower Productive Measures" forming the greater portion of the mountains. These mountains rise abruptly from the banks of the river to a height of from 800 to 1200 feet, leaving only here and there narrow strips of bottom land, a few acres in extent; and as the measures consist principally of hard sandstones, shales, and conglomerates lying in a nearly horizontal position, the mountain-sides are very precipitous, with many long and high cliffs, which, with the great height of the mountains, give the country a very rugged appearance. Along the sides of these mountains fronting on the New River and its many tributaries there are exposed the outcroppings of several veins of bituminous and, semi-bituminous coal, varying in thickness from a few inches to over four feet, five of them being workable, or

In the spring of 1931 an experiment was made at Anaconda with a small reverberatory furnace, with which was combined a roasting shaft. The arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1) and requires but little explanation. The general idea was to roast flotation concentrates, mixed with the proper fluxing materials, by dropping them down a heated shaft, from which the calcines would enter the smelting zone of the reverberatory furnace through an opening in the roof. The hearth of the reverberatory was 3 ft. wide by 21 ft. long. The roasting shaft was 3 ft. square inside and had an effective height of about 20 ft. The reverberatory furnace was arranged so that it could be charged either directly through the roof with regular hot calcines, in the usual manner, or by means of the shaft, at the top of which were a feeding arrangement by which cold flotation concentrates, suitably fluxed, could be fed continuously and a pipe through which cold air was blown in. Means were provided for distributing the feed over the cross-section of the roasting shaft. At first a mechanical arrangement was used but later it was found that a simple cone served the purpose equally well and gave less operating trouble. On account of the small size of the equipment, it was realized that absolute capacity and fuel consumption figures would mean but little. It was not to be expected that ratios comparable to those obtained in large furnaces could be gotten, and the only way in which any idea could be obtained as to the possibilities of the combination furnace was to run it in parallel with the reverberatory furnace charged in the usual manner and operating without the shaft. The results of such parallel runs are given in Table 1. The amount of oil burned in the reverberatory was purposely maintained at substantially the same rate during both runs in order that the benefits resulting from the shaft might be gaged. It was expected that the shaft would considerably increase the capacity of the reverberatory and that a better fuel ratio would be obtained on account of the high temperature at which the calcines would enter the

A lead-zinc orebody, in fairly strong quartzite and with a dip of 35" to 60°, is block-caved by use of scrams in a stair-step pattern up the ore footwall. Scram linings to handle coarse muck and permit the use of folding scrapers are developed by the use of end-grain wooden blocks to reduce maintenance and keep operating cost to a minimum. THE Bunker Hill mine, since its discovery in 1885, has steadily produced a high grade of lead-silver-zinc ore. By the end of 1952 over 21,000,000 tons of this high-grade ore had been produced by square-set mining, and reserves in the mine continue to be very satisfactory both as to quantity and grade. For many years prior to 1941, mine production and mill capacity had been 1200 tons of feed per day. Closely adjacent to the mill, and stored behind dikes, coarse jig tailings had been impounded during the time preceding the advent of fine grinding and selective flotation. When manpower became short in 1941 and sink-and-float preconcentration was proved successful, mill capacity was increased to 1800 tons per day to treat these jig tailings economically. By 1946, because the supply of jig tailings was limited, underground exploration was started to discover and prove ore reserves of low-grade material which could be mined by an appropriate bulk mining method. During the years of square-set mining many possible areas of low-grade mineralization had been observed. One chosen for the first exploration work was sufficiently remote from active mining areas so that subsidence, if an ore-body were proved, would cause no problem. Also, old adits and workings were still open and in good enough condition so that exploration in the mineralized zone could be started with a minimum of preparatory work. In 1948 an orebody was proved of sufficient tonnage, of a grade about 2 pct Zn, 0.5 oz Ag, and 1.0 pct Pb. It was decided to use block-caving, the only appropriate mining method by which this grade of ore could be economically recovered. Exploration for additional reserves in other areas of the mine is continuing, but ultimate results are not known at this time. With more sink-and-float capacity, larger ball mills, and more flotation machines, mill capacity was increased to 3000 tons per day, permitting the mining of ore in the square-set area at a maximum rate not usually achieved, because of the scarcity of labor. Increased mill capacity also permits block caving and the mining of jig tailings at variable rates to keep mill feed up to 3000 tons per day. Fortunately the three types of feed are amenable to the same mill circuit and reagents for recovery of Pb and Zn. For example, during the first 10 months of 1952 square sets produced 827 tons per day, block-caving 1421 tons per day, and jig tailings 643 tons per day, an average daily production of 2891 tons for all three products. Exploration had proved the existence of an ore-body 1000 ft long and 165 ft wide in horizontal section, see Fig. 1. Company engineers were concerned only with the vertical extension, about 300 ft, from an old level to the surface. Much of this almost outcropped, Fig. 2. The ore lies in the hanging wall of a major fault of the Bunker Hill mine, standing at 65" in one end of the zone and separated from the fault by a wedge of waste, see Fig. 3. This wedge pinches out near the center of the zone, at which point the ore dips 45", lying nearly on the fault, Fig. 4. The remaining portion lies on the fault and conforms to the fault dip of 35", Fig. 5. Open-pit mining for the top of the ore was considered, but since the ore zone dipped into and under the mountains, adverse waste-to-ore ratios precluded use of this method. The ore occurs in massive quartzite of sufficient strength to support untimbered drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Zones of weakness in the quartzite are bedding, jointing, and small faults or slips. The mineralization, which occurs as small stringers of sphalerite and galena as well as pyrite, creates another line of weakness. The mineral veins or veinlets in themselves are high-grade. Their size and regularity and the amount of barren quartzite by which they are separated determined the limits of mineable ore, which are all assay limits except for the one determined by the major fault. Block 1 Without any background of caving in this type of quartzite, engineers selected the first block on the very steep end of the zone. Compelling reasons prompted this decision. The steep portion of the ore in Block 1 was of the lowest grade, so that if difficulties were encountered no very valuable ore would be lost, while the experience gained might be applied in mining the remaining blocks. A block 200x200 ft was laid out, with four scrams spaced 50 ft apart for drawing and placed at a right angle to the strike. A simple model for dilute interslitial solid solutions is set up which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the solid solution and the gaseous solute to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial thermody -namic functions of Ag-O and Fe-N dilute interstitial solid solutions from the measured equilibrium between these solutions and the gas phase. It is shown that the partial excess entropy of the solute atom in solution is a vibrational entropy which is due Principally to the oscillation of the interstitial atom and does not arise from electronic or elastic interaction between the solute atoms and solvent matrix. In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid interstitial solutions and a gaseous phase are used to deduce the important thermody-namic functions of the solid solution with the aid of a theoretical solubility equation formulated from a knowledge of the thermodynamic functions of the gas and a simple model for the solid solution. The quantity of principal interest which is deduced from the equilibrium data is the change in vibrational entropy occurring when a solute atom (u) is placed in an interstial site in the solvent (u) lattice. This paper forms part of a more general study in which the properties of condensed phases are deduced from measurements of the equilibrium between the condensed phase and a gas. Previous investigations have dealt with the equilibrium between krypton and liquid metals,' a pure metal and its vapor,' and dilute substitutional alloys and the vapor,3 and the subject has been popularly reviewed by McLellan.4 In the latter investigation3 the vapor pressures of very dilute Cu-Ag and Cu-Au alloys were measured with a Knudsen cell technique over a large range of temperatures and the analysis of the vapor-pressure data showed that the relative partial excess entropies were large and positive [ds= -Sudk = 30 for Au-Ag alloys and 150 for Cu-Au alloys; these values should be compared to unity, the value assumed for these exponentials in the quasi-chemical theory of solutions]. For many interstitial solutions experimental data is available for the equilibrium between the solution and a gaseous phase, and this can be used to deduce the vibrational entropies of the solute atoms in solution. The general method employed is to calculate the chemical potential of the solute atoms in the gas and equate this to pi, the chemical potential of solute atoms in the solid, which is deduced from a simple model set up for the dilute interstitial solution (in which the solute atoms act as bound oscillators in interstitial sites). This enables a theoretical solubility equation to be set up. In the case of Ag-O and Fe-N solid solutions the solubility c, is found to vary with temperature according to a relation of the type, where PU2 is the pressure of the O2 or Np molecules. Essentially, the theoretical solubility equation enables the parameter A(T), which gives the vibration entropy, and the parameter AH, which gives the energy of solution of a solute atom, to be estimated from the measured variation of solubility with temperature. The solutions treated are dilute enough to enable solute-solute interactions to be neglected so that the partial energy and excess entropy of solution E, and GS are not functions of composition and the configurational entropy is that of a random solution. Large positive values have been found for sxSu this quantity has not been given sufficient consideration in recent work on interstitial solutions and it is felt that the partial thermodynamic quantities of very dilute solutions should be understood before the thermodynamics of concentrated solutions can be fully appreciated. EXPERIMENTAL DATA 1) The Silver-Oxygen System. The measurements of Steacie and Johnson,= using silver foils, indicate that there is a pronounced minimum in the solubility vs temperature curve for O-Ag solutions. Eichenauer and Miiller6 have recently redetermined the solubility of oxygen in silver using a method developed in the investigation of metal-hydrogen systems.7 The solubility determinations were carried out on compact specimens of differing shapes and sizes and the results indicate a much lower solubility than was obtained by Steacie and Johnson with no minimum at 400°C. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation is actively engaged in the utilization of coal mine refuse in the construction of highway embankments. Long-held objections for utilization are invalidated by research, laboratory data, and construction performance. Laboratory, engineering, construction, and environmental impact analyses are presented from the construction of the Cross Valley Expressway embankment at Forty Fort, Luzerne County, Pa. Comparisons of laboratory data and construction measurements are given. The refuse embankment is the first of its size in Pennsylvania, and possibly the U. S., covering 1.5 million cu yd.

Also, the heat resulting from the oxidation of the fine broken sulfide ore is sometimes sufficient to set fire to the timbers. In 1906, a fire was discovered on the 1100-ft. level of the Minnie Healy mine about 400 ft. (122 m.) west of the Minnie Healy shaft, which presumably originated, in one of the upper levels, from spontaneous combustion. The fire was walled off by concrete bulkheads and a pillar of ground 100 ft. (30 m.) thick was left below and mining resumed underneath. During subsequent operations, this pillar became cracked and broken and the fire passed into the new workings. It travelled downward and spread rapidly until, in 1917, it had become necessary to wall off portions of the Tramway, Leonard, and West Colusa mines on the 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1800, 1900, and 2000-ft. levels, and the tops of the 2200-ft. raises were sealed. DISCUSSION Howard Howie (Knoxville, Term.)—The authors are to be congratulated on the presentation of a paper containing so much valuable information on the pipeline transportation of phosphate, as there is very little literature on the subject. The writer is especially interested in the paper, as he conceived the arrangement of the Akin and Godwin plants and was in charge of the design work and the engineering incident to their construction. The Akin and other phosphate deposits in the Tennessee phosphate area lie on beds of limestone that are very irregular. The limestone beds, after the phosphate matrix has been removed, are similar in appearance to land severely eroded by the action of water and denuded of top soil. Depressions in the limestone, called cutters, are irregular in depth with vertical or overhanging walls, having the general appearance of cracks in dried clay. They change abruptly in direction, width, and depth, and vary on the Akin tract from 1 to 25 ft in depth and from 1 to 50 ft in width. Pinnacles of limestone commonly occur in the cutters which appear, when exposed, like small clifflike islands in a river. Limestone floats also occur. The phosphate matrix fills the cutters and covers the uncuttered areas, the thickness of the cover varying continually and sometimes rather abruptly. It occurs generally as stratifications of phosphate rock and clay of varying thickness. The phosphate rock in the matrix varies in hardness and in percents of silica, lime, iron oxides, and fluorine, and the clay varies in toughness. This pipeline, referred to hereafter as pipeline A, discharges into a ball mill without balls, which in turn discharges into a rotary screen attached to it that separates the slurried matrix into 11/4-in. oversize and undersize fractions. The oversize is returned to the mill for further reduction; the undersize is pumped to a Dorrco washer and then flows into a hydroseparator 160 ft in diam. In spite of the size reduction in the hammer mill and the blunging and washing of the slurry in its passage through the pump, pipeline, mill, and washer, the discharge to the hydroseparator frequently contains mud balls almost perfectly spherical. Sometimes the discharge from the 16,000-ft pipeline at Godwin contains mud balls the size of bird shot and smaller. This pipeline will be referred to subsequently as line B. Liquid caustic is added to the slurry at the Akin plant before its passage through the hydro-separator, which decreases the size of particles in the overflow by dispersion. In passing through pumps 1, 2, and 3 and pipeline B, the slime fraction in the underflow is increased by abrasion and blunging and also by continuing dispersive action of the caustic. The matrix for use in the experimental tests referred to on p. 279 was obtained from three small surface openings on the Akin tract that were made previous to the purchase of the tract by the Authority. Matrix used in the 2 and 4-in. experimental pipeline tests was taken from the three openings and proportioned to obtain a sufficient quantity that would be fairly representative of the average in the Akin deposits. Prospecting samples of matrix had been obtained from drill holes which showed no small variation in physical and chemical properties. Some of the physical variation is evident from the size distribution of solids in samples taken during the tests covering line B flows so thoroughly made by the Authority under the direction of Mr. Burt, see Table V, p. 280. Hydraulic gradients for a pipe of 8-in. diam were derived from the 2 and 4-in. pipeline tests using the so-called representative matrix as above described, and plotted on the profile of pipeline B. Gradients of other materials in slurry form passing through pipelines that bore some similiarity to the Akin matrix slurry were also plotted. After a study had been made of the hydraulic gradients plotted on the profile and the varying slurry flow that would probably occur during actual operation, three pumps were ordered, referred to as No. 1, 2, and 3 on p. 279. No. 1 and 2 pumps were installed and the third kept in reserve should the operation of 1 and 2 pumps prove satisfactory, since installation of the third pump would require an attendant, as well as the laying of 5400 ft of pipe to supply it with seal-water from the Akin plant. Subsequently, it was found desirable to install the third pump to maintain capacity when the slime fraction was low and the coarse fractions were large. Reference to Fig. 6 will show that the flow in B line goes upgrade in three locations. At the outlet at Godwin, the slurry flows between two 45" bends for an approximate distance of 18 ft to rise above the ground a sufficient height to discharge into a launder feeding the first classifier. This condition requires extra energy, which is taken care of by keeping the hydraulic gradient a sufficient distance above the high points. With the inauguration of open-pit copper mining in Bagdad, Ariz., plans were formulated for a large scale leaching operation. Dump stockpiling was started almost immediately, but actual production was not initiated until spring 1961.
