THE process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. Case 1 If compressed air is allowed to expand to the atmospheric pressure through an orifice in an sir line that is supplied by a running compressor, no cooling results except the negligible one due to the Joule-Thompson effect, which will not be considered in this discussion. CIVILIZATION'S PROGRESS, which has multiplied man's comforts, conveniences, a n d happiness, is based upon the extensive employment of natural minerals and sources of energy. Mineral resources are basic factors in modern economic development, machine industry, international trade and world power. A survey of mineral consumption shows that the United States leads the world in the production and consumption of energy materials, of metals, and of the large and diverse array of earth materials that fall in the nonmetallic mineral group. The use of nonrnetallic minerals exceeded both the metals and the fuels in the long period before the industrial age, but it is only in the last two decades that consumption of non- metals has kept pace with and approximated in value the output of metals. Although the data of production in the first half of the last century are meager and fragmentary, the record of the past fifty years-the period of most rapid growth-is available, and reveals an astounding growth.

A problem often encountered is the provision of materials which have impurity contents below a certain specified level. This problem is in some cases solved by making use of the segregation of the impurity with respect to the liquid and solid states of the material: an ingot of the material is subjected to directional solidification and the ends of the ingot. which are richer in solutes which respectively raise and lower the melting point of the solvent, are removed. An important extension of this process is the zone-refining process invented by pfann,' in which molten zones are passed successively along the length of an ingot and displace solutes towards the ends. Pfann's process is particularly appropriate in cases for which the segregation coefficient k does not differ greatly from unity, or when the impurity content must be kept extremely low (-=,6 atom fraction); it is widely used, particularly in the purification of materials for use in semiconductor electronic devices. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate theoretically the efficiency of the above refining processes; that is! we determine the most economic method of attaining a given yield of solvent of specified purity, taking into account the variables of the process. One variable of interest is the effective value of the segregation coefficient. which depends on the rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface and on the degree of stirring in the liquid; in addition to this, in the zone-refining process we are also interested in the choice of zone length for most efficient operation. A mathematical determination is made here of the lengths of successive molten zones which give, for an initially uniform distribution, the most efficient removal of a solute of arbitrary distribution coefficient. In order to be able to give a quantitative treatment of efficiency, we first define figures of merit applicable to a given distribution of solute. SiR Humphry Davy's epoch-making treatise delivered on Nov. 9, 1815, before the Philosophical Society of London, first announced and demonstrated a flame safety lamp for detecting methane in mine air. Coal mining was known in England as early as 1180, more than 600 years before the advent of a safe lighting and gas-detecting appliance. Mining, no doubt, took place first in outcrop coal, and danger from gas did not become apparent until the workings became deeper and more extensive. Davy's lamp did much to increase the safety of miners, and a modified Davy lamp is still widely used for detecting the presence and approximate amount of combustible gas in mine air. No factor in coal mining has improved more rapidly during the past 15 years than safety measures. This progress came about not only as a result of the workmen's compensation laws now in force in most of the states of the Union, but because the research work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines had demonstrated some dangers incident to coal mining which were not considered to be serious matters prior to that time. Electric power and explosives are necessary but potential hazards in American coal mines. A general mechanization program is now under way, while the mines are growing deeper and more extensive. Consequently ventilation problems are more complex and a demand has been created for positive detecting devices for carbon monoxide as well as methane. Scientists and manufacturers, working hand in hand during the past 10 years, have invented and developed appliances which make systematic and effective examination of mine air possible. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the approved testing devices in use today, with the hope that they may lead to the saving of life. Two Groups of Dangerous Coal Mine Gases Dangerous coal mine gases may be placed in two groups: (I) those that are dangerous because of their explosive properties, and (2) those that are dangerous because of their toxic properties. Methane (CH4) is the important gas of the first group, and in so-called gaseous mines constantly exudes from the coal and rock; it may accumulate and form an explosive mixture. It is usual practice in the copper industry to use open horizontal molds for casting tough-pitch copper wire bars.' A wire bar cast in this manner is partly characterized by heavy wrinkles and a comparatively deep skin of oxide on the top of the bar, corresponding to the open side of the mold. On the theory that the rough, high-oxide surface might have an adverse effect on the rolling and drawing properties of a wire bar and might account for some of the irregularities of mill behavior, several bars which had been planed to remove the wrinkled surface were processed into wire. These bars responded to mill treatment more satisfactorily than did the regular wire bars. Realizing that machining the surface of one face of each bar would not be commercially feasible, it was decided that casting the metal into a vertical mold and cropping off the pouring end would accomplish approximately the same result. Several wire bars of commercial size (250 Ib.) were so cast and processed into wire for comparative test with bars cast in the usual horizontal molds. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results obtained from this investigation, in which commercial bar sizes and processing technique were used throughout. The results show that in general copper wire bars cast vertically are superior to those cast horizontally. Experimental Procedure A horizontally cast bar and a vertically cast bar were obtained from each of several regular reverberatory furnace heats of copper which had been refined and poled to tough-pitch metal in accordance with usual methods.' Both bars were cast from the same part of the melt and within five minutes of each other, in order to produce as nearly as possible, in each case, wire bars of identical composition.

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a 7-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Co. in southeast Utah. The support system allows good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered. Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths. The Radon mine was one of the first American metal mines to use yielding steel props for supporting the relaxed core of the pressure arch which is induced by retreating longwall mining. Full caving was induced. After more than 7 years of stoping experience, the method has proved very satisfactory for the conditions encountered. The mine and method have been described in references listed in the bibliography. U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8004 by Wilbert Dare and Philip Lindstrom gives the most information. Stoping experience at this mine indicates that there are many advantages to be gained by using yielding supports; such as in safety, timber cost, roof control, ventilation, ore dilution, and low cost per pound of metal produced. Subsidence measurements show that the surface will rise rather than slump in some areas over the mine. This appears to be an unusual observation and is presented as a new development in subsidence studies. The Radon mine is located 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual premiums were possible by clean mining. For the past several years, USBM has conducted laboratory and continuous process development work on the weathered mica pegmatites ores of Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. The research has resulted in the development of two processes for flotation of mica: 1) an acid-cationic method for recovery of coarse mica and 2) an alkaline-anionic-cationic method for recovery of fine mica. The research indicated that the two processes may be effectively utilized separately or in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores. This report summarizes the process development work, and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates with a high recovery of the contained mica. Mica mining in the United States is confined largely to pegmatites and schists in a few well-defined areas. The largest region extends from central Virginia southward through western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, and east-central Alabama.'" Whereas in western North Carolina, these pegmatite dikes are weathered to only a shallow depth, they are deeply weathered in the Carolina Piedmont and in Georgia and Alabama. Particularly in Georgia and Alabama, mica is found in the decomposed slates and schists adjacent to the pegmatites, and in deeply weathered granites. Most flake mica is obtained as the major marketable product by crushing and milling pegmatites4 To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of feldspar" and spodumene. Past research by U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed two methods for mica flotation. One method utilizes acid-cationic flotation for recovery of mica.' This method requires thorough desliming of the ore with consequent fine mica losses. The other utilizes an alkaline-anionic-cationic process for recovering fine-size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials but not so drastically as to remove the fine mica.8-18 The latter process has also been successfully applied to a micaceous schist ore from California.' This report summarizes the results of these research studies. Both of the flotation processes developed by USBM have been adopted by the mica industry and are being commercially utilized separately and in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores. HE State of Utah has an area of 84,990 sq. mi., and like other inland states in the West its population, although steadily increasing, is relatively small. The fact that it is a state possessing vast mineral resources is attested by a careful study of statistics which have been compiled by Federal and State investigators. Some idea of the extent of these resources and the degree of development of a particular state or region may be gained by such a study, but in the case of Utah statistics and other available information fail to portray completely the true extent and value of its existing metallic and non-metallic resources. The State is probably more widely known for its production of metallic ores which has placed it in an eminent position among the metal mining states of the Nation.

In spite of recent trends in the United States toward construction of steam generating plants near mine mouths, and toward use of high-voltage direct current for long-distance transmission of electricity, coal in substantial amounts is being transported over relatively long distances to serve specific needs. As coal is a low-cost bulk commodity which is more suitable for use near the point of origin, some of these long hauls are of considerable interest because they show what can be done under the pressure for more and more coal to support industrial and economic growth. Japan has an Insatiable Appetite for Coal Perhaps the longest U.S. coal journey begins in the east Appalachian Basin of southern Pennsylvania, eastern West Virginia, and southwestern Virginia. High-quality coking coal mined in these areas is shipped by rail to Baltimore, Md., and to Hampton Roads, Va., where the coal is reloaded on freighters for shipment primarily to western Europe and Japan. In 1967, shipments of coal to western Europe totaled 19 million tons, and shipments to Japan totaled 12 million tons. Japan also imports coal from Australia, the U.S.S.R., Canada, Poland, the People's Republic of China, and to a lesser ex- tent from several other countries. In an effort to solve long-term needs, Japanese steel interests have contracted for the purchase from the Kaiser Steel Corp. of 51 million long tons of coking coal over the period 1970 to 1985. The coal will come from the Kaiser Steel Corp. mine near Fernie, British Columbia. This arrangement will reduce Japan's future dependence on Appalachian Basin coal.

A NORTH CAROLINA miner dreamed that he found high-grade mica by excavating a certain corner of his mine. The next day he sank a hole on the exact spot and found mica of excellent quality. The dream came true. May not this be as good a method as any yet known for forecasting the valuable mineral content of pegmatites? The Federal Geological Survey has found in its recent detailed studies in New England that good sheet mica occurs most abundantly in zoned pegmatites, particularly in zones lying along the wall or contact of the pegmatite mass. Although this conclusion may be a valuable guide, pegmatite mining operations must still be classed as most uncertain and hazardous enterprises. Finding of the second largest diamond ever discovered in the United States-a stone of good gem quality weighing more than 34 carats-during the course of a horseshoe pitching contest at Peterstown, W. Va., is another example of unorthodox mining methods. These should not be considered, however, as characteristic mining methods developed in 1944.

Mathematical models of the transient thermal behavior of a high-temperature solution calorimeter1-3 have been developed. The thermal behavior of the calorimeter is appoxirrzated by linear lumped-parameter models, and hence is described by sets of linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients The response of the models to various inputs is shown to agree with the response of the real system. Application of the modeling to experimental design and analysis of data illustrates the usefulness of simple models of complex systems. The early eperiments1,2 with the high-temperature solution calorimeter indicated that the change in the temperature of the bath resulting from the addition of a solute sample to the bath involved not only the direct effect due to the solution process but also possibly a secondary effect arising from the change in coupling between the bath and the induction heating coil. Consequently, an extensive analysis of the calorimeter was carried out, and models of the transient thermal processes of the instrument were developed to aid in improving the design and interpreting the behavior of the system. This paper describes the dynamic modeling; the use of it in treating experimental results has been reported earlier.3 The high-temperature solution calorimeter was constructed to measure directly the partial molar heats of solution of solute elements in a variety of liquid metal solvents.1-3 The calorimeter consists of an induction-heated liquid metal bath into which small samples of a solute element can be dropped. The bath temperature is recorded continuously, and the change in the measured bath temperature with time, dTm = f(t), resulting from the solute addition are the raw data from which the enthalpy change caused by the addition is determined. To extract the rmodynamic results from the data, the temperature change must be compared with that resulting from calibration additions of known enthalpy change. Accordingly, it is necessary to understand the transient thermal processes arising as a result of the addition to the bath. Neither modeling nor experimentation alone could provide the required insight into the working of the calorimeter. The alternate use of both methods in conjunction greatly assisted the design of the equipment and experiments, and the interpretation of the data. THE PHYSICAL CHARACTER OF THE SYSTEM The essential parts of the calorimeter, Fig. 1, for model studies are the thermocouple, the liquid metal bath and the surrounding refractories. The system is the solvent metal bath and those refractories around it which undergo a temperature change as a result of an addition to the bath, and which determine the way the temperature of the bath responds to an input. The inputs are the combined transient thermal effects arising when an addition is made to the bath. They include the thermal effects of the addition itself and the results of changed coupling between the bath and the induction coil. The response is the variation in the measured bath temperature, dTm(t) = Tm(t) - Tm(O), from an initial steady state resulting from the inputs. It was assumed in this study that the physical properties of the various elements of the system are independent of the inputs and time, although these properties may vary as the result of changes in the composition and size of the bath during a series of additions. This separation of inputs and the system is equivalent to assuming that the system is linear, i.e., that its behavior can be described by linear differential equations with constant coefficients. Linear behavior can be expected whenever the departure of each portion of the system from its steady-state condition is small enough to cause negligible changes in the thermal properties of the materials and in the various heat-transfer coefficients. Radiative heat transfer is important in this system, so the assumption of linearity should be valid only for small temperature deviations. Several conclusions were drawn from operation of the calorimeter in earlier experimental studies: 1) Radiative heat transport from the top of the bath is a significant portion of the total heat lost from the bath. However, for small changes in the bath temperature the change in transport by this path could be assumed to be proportional to the change in the bath temperature. 2) A very small portion of the heat input is lost through the thermocouple to its water-cooled holder. The thermal resistance and thermal capacity of the thermocouple protection tube are small, so the temperature of the thermocouple should follow closely that of the bath. 3) The remainder of the total heat lost from the bath will pass by conduction through the crucible to, and through, the other refractories, eventually being absorbed by the water-cooled induction coil or by the water-cooled sides and bottom of the enclosure. 4) The thermal resistance between the bath and crucible is very small. Thus the thermal capacity of the crucible will affect the temperature of the bath very soon after an addition of heat to the bath. 5) The thermal resistance between the crucible and the silica sleeve is large, especially if a radiation shield is placed in the gap. The effect of the thermal capacity of the sleeve thus will be significant only at longer times. The thermal resistance through the packing below the crucible also is large, so the packing and the silica sleeve will have similar effects on the behavior of the system. 6) A large temperature drop exists across the gap containing the water-cooled induction coil. Thus for relatively small changes in the thermal input to the bath, the refractories beyond the sleeve

NEARLY 25 years ago operating officials in the northern anthracite field were confronted with the problem of profitably mining virgin beds of thin coal (those 48 in. and under) or destroying them by mining under-lying thick beds. To solve this problem costly hand-mining methods were replaced by cheaper mechanical methods, which eliminated the need for the lifting of bottom or the brushing of top in excessive quantities, which was essential if proper height for hand loading' was to be provided. During this period long-face mining was an outstanding development. In its favor in comparison with any other method were the ease with which undercutting machines could be used, a differential in powder cost of about fifteen cents per ton in favor of this method over mining from a solid chamber or pillar face, and a greater production per day from a single working place, resulting in lower capital expenditures for a given total production, closer supervision and lower transportation cost. The long faces were drilled by jackhammer and undercut by machines. The coal from the cut was loaded into mine cars placed on the gangway road by means of a double-drum mechanical scraper engine and a mechan-ical V-type scoop. A tugger hoist was used to spot empty cars at the loading point from a supply placed at the operation by an electric mine locomotive. During loading the roof was supported by vertical wooden props paralleling the face. After the loading was completed the scraper engine and the ropes that had been used to propel the scoop in the loading of coal transferred the props to and along the face. A row of unfilled cogs was then built parallel to the new face and about 6 ft. from it. These cogs were usually made 6 by 3 ft., the longer dimension paralleling the face; they were placed on an average at 12-ft. centers. These wooden cogs were left in place and were buried later by falling roof. Attempts to remove them were never successful. When a new long face was started, the cog spacing would be increased to about 20-ft. centers. As successive cuts were made, weight would begin on the cogs, and they

THINKING that it may prove of interest to the Institute, I have prepared a short account of the blowing in and subsequent working of the "A" furnace of the Edgar Thomson Steel Works. This furnace was built for the purpose of making spiegel, but has been started and is now running on Bessemer iron. The shape and size of the furnace are shown in the accompanying drawing. It will be seen that the section is formed of lines making very small angles with each other. In fact, an arc of a circle can be drawn, from the top to the tuyeres, which will nowhere deviate more than two inches from the lines given. In building, also, great pains were taken to gradually round the angles, so that the most careful observer, standing in the crucible and looking upward, could not tell at what points the slopes changed. It will also be seen that the widest part of the furnace is almost exactly midway between the bottom and the stock line, The flattest slope is maintained for 20 feet above the crucible, and is about 1 s inch to the foot from the perpendicular. The furnace is lined with small brick throughout, and has six tuyeres four inches in diameter, which project seven inches inside of crucible. There are three Siemens-Cowper-Cochrane stoves, each 15 feet in diameter by 50 feet high. Blast is furnished by an upright engine with 32-inch steam cylinder, 84-inch air cylinder, and 48-inch stroke. The steam cylinder has balanced poppet valves, working horizontally. The steam valves are worked by a Porter link-movement in order to obtain a variable cut-off. The exhaust valves are worked by a separate eccentric. I HAVE been asked by the Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee to outline what the engineering colleges would like the mining companies to do with the young engineer just, out of college. It has been suggested that, because my own personal experience has been almost entirely within the coal industry, I handle this subject from that view- point. Many thoughtful engineering educators are today wondering what effect the present employment policies of many industrial companies are going to have on the young man just starting out in his profession. Since before the World War large industrial concerns, such as those in the electrical and mechanical industries, have gone to the colleges to interview 'likely graduates until today there has developed in most of our engineering colleges, especially in the eastern part of the country, what appears to be a lively competition on the part of these companies in bidding for the young graduate engineer. The employers of mining engineers, with one or two exceptions, have not yet begun to enter this competition. It remains to be seen how serious this situation will become, how it will affect the training of other engineers, and what effect, if any, it will have on the mind of the young man about to enter college who may be inclined to take up mining engineering, but who gains the impression from this well advertised employment service just mentioned that there is no opportunity for him in the mineral industry as com- pared with the opportunities offered in say civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

The oil recovery performance of systems producing entirely by bottom-water encroachment has been experimentally determined in a series of scaled laboratory-model tests. The effects of well spacing, fluid mobilities, rate of production, capillary and gravity forces, well penetration and well completion techniques on the oil recovery performance have been investigated. The laboratory tests were performed using two uniform, un-consolidated sand-pack models. The models have ratios of the interwell distance to the formation thickness of 12 and 2, respectively. Tests at constant total fluid production rate were performed simulating a range of uniform reservoir characteristics and operating conditions encountered in field operations. The performance was determined by material balance and by observation of the encroachment of dyed fluids into the models. The results of the model tests agreed with those obtained mathematically when the conditions previously considered in theoretical studies were simulated, that is, when the oil and water are of equal density and no capillary forces exist. The model study of bottom-water drive indicated that certain variables can aoect the oil recovery performance to a greater degree than can be predicted by present analytical methods. In one comparison, the oil recovery at a water-oil ratio of 20 (obtained at a wide well spacing) varied as much as threefold, depending upon the system's properties and the production rate. Lesser effect of mobility ratio and no eflect of capillary forces over the range studied were observed. The test 'results also showed that the deeper the well penetration into the oil column, the greater the total water production to a producing WOR of 20. However, the ultimate sweep efficiency, and so the oil recovery to this level of WOR, did not vary significantly with well penetration. Horizontal fractures at the top of the formation did not significantly change the sweep characteristics of the reservoir models when values of radius and fracture capacity encountered in actual reservoirs were used. Impermeable pancakes at the bottom of the well moderately increased the oil recovery efficiency both at water breakthrough and at high water-oil ratios. A method is outlined by which the oil recovery performance of other uniform bottom-water drive systems can be estimated from the information obtained in these model tests. INTRODUCTION When oil is produced from a well which partially penetrates an oil zone completely underlain by water, the water rises directly beneath the well in a symmetrical cone when the system is uniform. Two different flow mechanisms can cause the water cone to form—coning and bottom-water drive. In coning, the aquifer is relatively inactive and the cone is formed beneath the well by the pressure gradients associated with the oil flow to the well. The oil can be produced by a solution-gas drive, an edge-water drive or other driving forces in the interwell area. In a bottom-water drive, the driving force for oil production comes from an upward encroachment of the underlying active aquifer. Two papers have analyzed the theoretical performance characteristics of bottom-water drive reservoirs. In the initial mathematical investigation, Muskat' established the equations which determine the pressure distribution in this type of reservoir and solved these equations for certain conditions. Specifically, it was assumed that the water and oil had equal mobilities and equal densities, there were no capillary forces, the pressure throughout the oil zone remained above the bubble-point pressure, a constant pressure existed at the initial water-oil contact and the oil was completely displaced by the encroaching water. These assumptions were used in obtaining analytical solutions. In general, Muskat found that the sweep efficiency to initial water breakthrough to the well was larger for the thicker oil zones, the closer well spacings, the lower ratios of vertical to horizontal permeabilities, the smaller the penetration of the well into the oil zone and the smaller the bore size of the well. The production history after water breakthrough was expressed as a volumetric sweep efficiency at a given producing water-oil ratio. The results indicated that cumulative oil production at producing water-oil ratios of 10 is less affected by the well spacing than is the water-free production history. Muskat studied well spacing which today would be regarded as close. The maximum value of his dimensionless well spacing (ratio of interwell distance to formation thickness) was 4.3. THE immediate vicinity of the sea-shore, affording special facility for the exportation of ores, makes it possible to work certain mines in the Vladivostok district, which, in more remote places of Siberia, would remain unproductive. Outside of the city of Vladivostok the population is small and the country is very little prospected. Additional discoveries of valuable deposits like the large body of calamine which has recently been opened in the neighborhood of earlier worked lead-silver ores, in the Tetiuhe valley, are still in the field of possibilities. For many years gold alone was produced, in part from the coastal rivers and in part from a quartz-vein on Askold island near Vladivostok. But the production is diminishing, and prospectors are looking for other rivers in the interior, such as the tributaries of the Ussuri. These rivers are now more accessible than formerly, due to the slow but gradual development, of colonization by the Russian peasants. The few natives of the country, called Orodjones, are of the Chinese race. They resemble the North American Indian and are hardy fur-hunters. They have given some attention to placers and have already shown good specimens of gold-dust from the rivers Iman, Bikin, Noto, etc. Coal-mining was begun in the Vladivostok region more than 20 years ago, but in a somewhat irregular way. The industry is not as yet important and the best coal-seams are badly prospected, or ire even neglected. Copper, lead, and iron exist in several places. The amounts give some encouragement to the anticipation that the discoveries will give rise to important metallurgical works. I here present a review of the various deposits, based upon such safe information as is in hand, when I have not drawn upon my personal observations. A description of the field apparatus has been published by D. G. Brubaker. Data from laboratory model studies of the in-line and broadside methods of operation are detailed. The conductor models include a single sheet conductor at several strike and dip angles and a schistose-type conductor. In addition, data on the effects of the strike length and of the depth of the conductor are presented for the broadside method of operation. All of the data show that the inclintion reverses direction over the top edge of dipping single sheet conductors. Differences between anomalies over conductors dipping between 90" and 30" are subtle,but flat-lying sheets can be readily distinguished from steeply dipping sheets. Schistose conductors are easily distinguished from single sheet conductors, and a procedure is given for determing the direction of schistosity. The depth of penetration under ideal conditions is 0.7 of the coil separation. In 1950, The New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) developed a lightweight apparatus for electromagnetic prospecting. A description of this apparatus has been published by D. G. Brubaker.1 It consists of a small, battery-powered vertical source coil and a direction-finding receiving coil. Source and receiver are kept a fixed distance apart and move as a unit along the survey lines. At each receiver station the inclination of the magnetic field created by the source is measured. Two methods of operation are used, in each of which measurements are taken with a constant source-to-receiver distance and with the plane of the source oriented to pass through the receiver station. In one procedure, called the in-line method, source and receiver travel in tandem along the same line. In the other procedure, called the broadside method, source and receiver move along adjacent lines, with the source-to-receiver direction oriented parallel to the assumed strike direction. The data recorded in either case are the inclinations, measured in degrees from the horizontal, of the magnetic field created by the source. These data are plotted at the receiver stations on a map. Scale-model studies of both methods of operation have been conducted in the laboratory and are reported in this paper. APPARATUS Small source and receiving coils wound with many turns of fine copper wire were used to produce and measure an alternating magnetic field in the same manner as the field apparatus. The model source coil was mounted in a vertical position and oriented so that the receiving coil was in the plane of the source. The receiving coil was mounted in a frame so it could be rotated to obtain the inclination measurements. The source coil was excited by a 100-kc signal generator. A tuned amplifier and a voltmeter were used to detect the null position of the receiving coil. The coils used in the field apparatus are usually spaced about 400 ft. The coils used in the model work were spaced from 4 in. to 4 ft apart. Thus the scale of the model work ranges between 1/1200 to 1/100 natural size. The model conductors were aluminum-coated building paper supported on wooden frames. The conductivity-thickness product was measured using a four-electrode system and was found to be about 300 ohms-'. CONDUCTIVITY CONSIDERATIONS The electromagnetic response from a thin sheet conductor is a function of the product of the conductivity of the sheet times the thickness of the sheet times the frequency of the alternating electromagnetic field times some linear dimension of the system such as the coil separation which indicates scale. The secondary electromagnetic field produced by the conductor increases in amplitude from zero at zero conductivity to a maximum value for infinite conductivity, while the phase of the secondary field with respect to the primary field shifts from 90" at zero conductivity to 0" at infinite conductivity. Several authors2-' have shown that most of both the increase in amplitude and the change in phase of the secondary field takes place over a three-decade range of the conductivity-thickness-frequency product. The desirability of a uniformly sized abrasive for metallographic polishing has probably been recognized in a general way for a long time. Certainly all metallographers have recognized the damage that can be done to a polished surface by a piece of grit, especially if one of the softer metals, such as zinc or aluminum, is being polished. It is to be doubted, however, whether many metallographers have had any adequate idea of the particle size of the abrasives they were using or of the range of sizes encountered in any given grade of abrasive. At any rate, the descriptions of abrasives for metallographic work found in the literature are generally very meager. It was with the idea of securing an abrasive with a limited range of particle size that a study of this problem was commenced. Commercial abrasives, even when recommended for metallographic work, are made up of particles of varying sizes. One such abrasive contains some particles so fine that they remain in suspension for days and other particles so coarse that they settle at the rate of 3 in. per minute. It is evident that the coarsest particles are over 100 times the diameter of the smallest ones, or over 1,000,000 times the volume. The hopelessness of avoiding scratches under these conditions is evident. Vanderwiltl has described a laboratory method for grading abrasives in which the elutriator is used. Le Chatelier's method, described by Goereq2 also makes use of an elutriator. However, the elutriator is too slow for this purpose and requires too delicate a control for the range of sizes desired. The method of stirring up the abrasive in water, allowing it to settle for a given time, then drawing a measured depth off the top of the suspension, has been finally adopted as the simplest procedure.
