Surface mining today is faced with a twin challenge: (1) accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2) replacing comparable high volumes of overburden in the mined-out portion of the pit. It is against this background, coupled with increased demands for fossil fuels worldwide and legitimate environmental concerns, that the role of bucketwheel excavators and reclaimers has been raised to new prominence.

Oliver have united the businesses and assets of The Dorr Company and Oliver United Filters, Inc., of which they are the respective heads, by the formation of the Dorr-Oliver Corporation under their joint management, and stockholders have approved the merger.

THE aggregate number of "papers" read within any one year before more or less bored and bewildered audiences is simply appalling. We have seventy to eighty engineering societies alone, not to speak of the many hundreds of societies of every other imaginable kind. And each meets at least once a year to tell what it has found out since the last meeting. All this is very fine and fortunate, at least in the case of the scientific and technological societies; for if even only one significant discovery, one new truth, one new idea comes out at the meeting, the session has been abundantly justified. To many of us, not scientists or technologists, the scientific and technological societies seem to release by far the most useful and important information. What they have to say is often of prime importance directly to human life and to industry, and is perhaps even more important indirectly in its final influence upon social and economic conditions, thus ultimately determining the course of what we like to call civilization. The paper read by that quiet, unpretentious man on the platform ma; mean the revolutionizing of a great existing industry, the creation of an entirely new industry, the gain of millions of dollars to some persons, the loss of millions to others. DURING the war South America attained a very important position in the production of metals and minerals, brought about by her strategic location near the "Arsenal of Democracy" and the loyalty of her peoples to the cause of freedom This seemingly miraculous achievement in the wartime delivery of the all-essential metals-copper, tin, lead, zinc and tungsten -as well as 35 other war-important minerals and metals, was not the simple result of orders received and of routine production It was the end result of pioneering, prospecting, developing, planning and plodding throughout the lifetime of your organization It was the introduction of new engineering principles, mining techniques, smelting procedures and refining practices, which presaged the entrance of the vast amount of venture capital essential to carry these promising mineral potentials through the dangerous stages of early development Many of those attending the meeting must in the past, as young engineers, have braved the untold hardships and discouragements that beset them at every turn Only they can really appreciate the true meaning of the overwhelming wartime demand on the mineral production of every one of the South American countries No one country has all of everything necessary to produce armaments on a scale imperative during an emergency Not even the United States, with its wealth of natural resources, could hope to meet the unprecedented de-

A special meeting of the Alaska Mining and Engineering society, held at Perseverance Mine of the Alaska Gastineau Mining Co. on Mar. 17, 1017, was attended by 46 members and about 80 guests, among whom were members of the Alaska Territorial Legislature. After an interesting trip through the mine in the afternoon, the members and guests assembled for dinner at the Perseverance Dining Room. After the dinner G. T. Jackson, assistant manager of the company, as president of the society, called the meeting to order. After the reading of the minutes, he welcomed the guests and then gave a short history of Perseverance Mine. B. L. Thane, manager of the company, briefly out-lined its general organization. The following papers were read-by members of the society and members of the staff of the Perseverance Mine: "The Organization of the Mine Staff and the Methods of Mining," by B. B. Nieding, Mine Supt.; "Tramming Equipment and Costs," by R. R. Van Valkenburgh; "The Surveying of the Mine," by R. L. Healey, Mine Engineer; "The Electrical Equipment of the Mine," by W. S. Pullen, Supt., of Power Supply; "The System of Mine Accounting, "by E. J. Doherty, Mine Accountant; and "The Mine Buildings," by D: J. Argall, Asst: Mine Supt. M. T. Tolch, Transportation Supt., described briefly the general transportation of the ore to the mill and the equipment used.

R. S. MACPHERRAN,* Milwaukee, Wis. (written discussion?);-Mr. Stork's paper is very interesting, but I am unable to agree with some of his conclusions. He argues very strongly for the beneficial effect of oxygen, but gives no actual determinations of this element to support -his views. He states that the oxygen resulting from a high bed, heavy charges, low coke ratio, etc. must not be confused with the oxygen under normal conditions. I will be glad to know in what respect these oxygens differ or in what state they occur. Is it his opinion that the beneficial type is present as a dissolved gas and the other as metallic oxide? I will not discuss the first five of his six points, as I have not seen enough trustworthy determinations of oxygen in cast iron to form any conclusions as to its effect. I have never known the addition of manga-nese, however, to reduce the strength of cast iron. Under the sixth point, I would say that the addition of steel lowers the total carbon content, and by this action will increase the strength independently of oxygen. This reduction of carbon operates also to raise the melting point. It is interesting to note here that the author, in order to get proper fluidity for his cylinders, was obliged to reduce his oxygen by raising the manganese in the charge.

With a productive output growing at an annual rate of 8%, the Soviet mining industry should emerge as the world's leader in total mineral output during the 1980's. (The Soviet Union's share in the world's total mineral output in 1973 was estimated at 22 to 23%.) According to estimates by Soviet mining experts, the mineral potential of the Soviet Union will sustain the current 8% annual growth rate in the future.
