IT was but a few years ago that the mining engineer, and his confreres, the civil, mechanical and electrical engineer, were stigmatized by politicians of the parish? pump variety as advance agents of unprincipled exploiters of backward countries. Today he is recognized as a most important missionary of civilization in opening up new territory to contribute its mineral wealth and incidentally its other resources for the needs of mankind. An engineer, it is now conceded, is not only a benefactor of the world at large, but is a primary factor in the betterment of conditions of the inhabitants of those countries developed by his skill and indomitable courage-for courage is requisite in pioneering and his indefatigable industry. The engineer will, I believe, become a real "Ambassador of Good Will," when the slow-consenting academic mind realizes as it must that beneficent deeds are more enduring and more convincing than mere gestures of professed amity.

When Robert H. Richards wrote Ore Dressing, the famous four-volume work published in the first decade of this century, the ore dresser was still largely concerned, with the mechanical treatment of ores. Since then, however, economics have transformed him into a mineral processing engineer who must increasingly deal with closely integrated facilities designed to produce a commodity for manufacturing. Moreover, this change will grow marked as the complex low- grade ores of the future make it ever more necessary for him not only to use the best combination of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and physical separation processes, but also to integrate these processes at the mine site. Nor are economic pressures the only ones propelling the processing engineer into a new era. The ecology drive has thrown him into a new situation in which his economic base is radically altered, and it could well precipitate as drastic a revolution in his technology as that which took place when flotation was developed.

Oil.—In the Texas Panhandle, during the year of 1941, 647 oil wells were drilled with a total daily initial production of 133,435 bb1.—that is, 145 more oil wells than in the previous year, with a decrease in total daily production of 5752 bbl. On Dec. 31, 1941, a daily allowable of 116,766 bbl., which was an increase of 27 per cent over 1940, was assigned to the field to be produced from 5182 wells. The total amount of oil produced for the year was 27,904,846 bbl., making a cumulative total of 404,657,324 bbl. during the past 20 years. ZAY JEFFRIES, Cleveland, Ohio.-The original portion of this paper represents a laboratory method for determining grain size in metals. It was developed not so much to find a quick method as it was to facilitate certain work which I was carrying on a couple of years ago. I had a great many determinations to make and the planimeter method was very slow, as was the Heyn method, and both of them were laborious, so I tried to shorten the time of the determinations. Since preparing the present paper, Dr. T. M. During the past 20 years the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. and the General Electric Co. have collected a valuable library of some 9000 volumes on electricity. The collection was intended especially for use in patent searches and is particularly rich in patent material. Files of all the principal patents relating to electric light acid power issued by America, England, France and Germany, are present, together with copies of the patents owned or controlled by the two companies. Another feature, and one of unusual value, is a series of volumes containing the records of the important adjudicated patent cases of these companies and their predecessors during the past 25 years, and forming a storehouse of electrical history. There are also files of about 100 electrical periodicals. It is a pleasure to announce that this collection has now been presented by the owners to the Engineering Societies Library. There are no certain records available of coal shipments or production in Alabama before 1874, and the tonnages shown in Table 60 are estimated from dates of shipment, number of boats and similar data. They are not accurate but probably too low. There were no canals and all shipments were by river or rail, excepting the small tonnage hauled by wagons. [ ]
