THIS machine is an improvement on the well-known endless traveling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills ; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of-the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. Having occasion a few weeks ago to investigate the subject of black band iron ore in West Virginia, I was surprised at being met at the outset with a denial of its existence. One gentleman went. so far as to offer one hundred dollars an acre for any land in West Virginia that contained a seam or vein of even a single foot in thickness, and when shown the ore he acknowledged that it was genuine, but declared it had been imported. That black band does occur in West Virginia is to-day well known to a number of persons. There is a seam on the Gauley River of about a foot in thickness of good ore, which I understand Mr. Lewis and others are making preparations to work. The great trouble with black band ores as heretofore found in this country has been their limited extent. At Fort Washington, for instance, they had a very fine show ing of ore, but it soon gave out. It has also been asserted that the black band ores of the Western Coal Measures were worthless in the furnace, and Fort Washington has been pointed out as an example of the fate of any one who should undertake to work them. But they have been successfully worked at Youngstown and in other parts of' Ohio, and I am assured by old furnace-men from Ohio that there is not the slightest difficulty in. working them if properly managed. ALTHOUGH zone melting has found favor in recent years because of its convenience and its faster rate of production of single crystals, the older technique of strain annealing still has a number of advantages. It has been reported1 that the lattice of a crystal prepared in this manner has fewer defects than one grown from the melt and, of course, the control of the external geometry is easier. Also, the diameter of the crystal which can be grown by zone melting has a theoretical limit determined by the surface tension, thermal conductivity, and specific gravity of the material, while the size of that which can be grown in the solid state is limited only by practical considerations. In a program for the study of the structure-sensitive properties of niobium and its alloys it was desirable, for ease of handling, to have available single crystals of large diameter. This requirement dictated the choice of the strain-anneal technique. Induction heating was chosen in the present work in preference to other methods because of its deep penetration of large-diameter sections. A five-turn coil, powered by a motor generator operating at 10,000 cps, is contained in a vacuum chamber. The work is lowered through the coil for both the recrystallization and the crystal-growth steps. Starting with electron-beam melted material, the bars are cold-swaged, recrystallized, strained in a tensile machine, and then subjected to the growth step. Single crystals have been grown under the following conditions: Reduction in area during swaging— 79 to 99 pct, recrystallization temperature—1500o to 1667°C at the rate of 1.25 in. per hr, strain—1.0 to 2.5 pct, growth temperature—1600o to 2400°C at rates from 0.15 to 1.25 in. per hr. Starting grain sizes achieved after the recrystallization step varied from 0.6 to 1.55 mm. The starting grain size was found to be critical; if it is too fine and has any residual cold work, as shown by the presence of a fiberlike texture, a single crystal cannot be grown. Using this technique niobium single crystals have been grown from 0.250 in. diameter and 12 in. long to 1.00 in. diameter and 5 in. long as shown in Fig. 1. The 1-in. crystal is the largest to be reported for a refractory metal as compared to 0.500 in. for molybdenum grown by zone melting.2 As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and Smallman,3 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point ahead of the interface between the single and polycrystalline portions. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". The amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry which up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. The perfection of these single-crystal specimens as a function of process variables is being measured by X-ray and metallographic techniques and the results will be reported in a forthcoming paper. Mr. Shaw's work showed the dodecyl mercaptan as a very good collector compared with other collectors on Cu-Mo ores, Mo ores, and for Au and Au-Ag ores plus Pt ores. However, as one who has had extensive experience on Cu-Mo ores, the work is not complete in making only a rougher concentrate with a collector; the work must be carried on in making a Cu-Mo separation. Did Mr. Shaw do any of this work? Before trying the dodecyl mercaptan as a Cu-Mo collector for the Cu-Mo ore it would be well to have any new work conducted knowing how the reagent acts on the Mo. Will it allow a good separation? The use of the collector at Palabora was also mentioned. From some earlier literature I thought that the reagent has been used as an oxide Cu collector after the sulfide mineral was floated out. I thought the pH at this point was about 1.5-3.0. I would like to have this point clarified.

In 1947, only a year after its own establishment, the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics formed a Mineral Economics Section. Originally, this Section consisted of a mineral economist, four geologists and three auxiliary employees. Then, in 1954, it was reorganized into a professional body of six members, all mineral economists, one of whom was the chief mineral economist. At this time, a mining statistical officer from the Bureau of Census and Statistics was attached to the Section to bring about a closer liaison between these two agencies. The addition of another mineral economist in 1961 brought the Section's professional staff to its present strength of seven. In recent years, the Mineral Economics Section has gained considerable support by becoming part of the Mineral Resources Branch of the Bureau of Mineral Resources. This Branch, which has the general role of monitoring the performance of the mineral industry in Australia, has two other specialized sections- Mining Engineering and Petroleum Technology-which bolster and complement the Mineral Economics Section.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the definition of compressibility and to present a uniform basis upon which instantaneous compressibilities of liquids and gases can be compared. The equations gaverning the instantaneous compressibilities of imperfect gases are derived and the concept of pseudo-reduced compressibility is introduced. Part of the data presented by Brown, Katz et a1 on compressibility factors for natural gases has been rearranged. A graph of pseudo-reduced compressibility vs pseudo-reduced pressure for various pseudo-reduced temperatures is presented. The need for additional work in relating the compressibilities of liquids and gases is discussed. This information should be of value to reservoir engineers in making non-steady state performance calculations in gas reservoirs. It should be of further use irz pointing the direction for additional research in the nature of liquid and gas compressibilities. INTRODUCTION With the increasing use of steady and non-steady state well and reservoir data, there is a corresponding increase in the importance of the various factors entering into such calculations. Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of the reservoir fluids well in advance of the more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of the media which are transmitting and attenuating the non-steady state pressure waves. The average isothermal coefficient of expansion, or "compressibility" is a complex function controlled by the physical properties of the formation and the fluids contained therein. The isothermal expansion coefficients for reservoir gases are usually quite variable, in many cases being highly-pressure sensitive. The coefficients for reservoir liquids tend to be pressure sensitive, but not nearly so much as reservoir gases. The coefficients for solids, usually expressed in terms of a "modulus of elasticity" are relatively insensitive to pressure variations within their elastic limits. For this reason, and also because many previous applications have been limited to rel- atively small pressure ranges, there has been a tendency to ignore the variable nature of isothermal expansion coefficients and treat them as constants. Also, the term "compressibility" by which these coefficients are generally designated is commonly confused with a similar term, z, used to define the deviation of an imperfect natural gas from the perfect gas laws. A clear distinction should be made at the outset between the term "compressibility", which is an isothermal coefficient of expansion of a substance, and the term "compressibility factor", z, which refers to the deviation of a gas from the perfect gas laws. Although the scope of this paper is limited to the compressibility of single phase natural gases, it is definitely related to the problem of accurately estimating the compressibilities of single phase hydrocarbon reservoir liquids, which will form the basis of a future presentation. BASIC PRINCIPLES The coefficient of isothermal compressibility of a substance, c, is usually determined from pressure-volume or pressure-length -measurements depending upon whether the substance is single phase gas, liquid, or solid. A convenient method for making such estimates for a finite change in pressure and volume at constant temperature is to use the well known equation V1-V2/V1 (p2 - p1) .....(1) Eq. 1 is negative because the volume of a confined substance decreases as the pressure is increased. In this case V1 > V2 and p2 > p1. This equation is useful in approximating the compressibilities of single phase gases and liquids undergoing small pressure changes. It is evident, however, that this equation is almost identical with the determination of Young's modulus of elasticity for solids. If the assumption is made that change in length is directly proportional to change in volume, as would very nearly be the case for a steel rod in tension within its elastic limit, then E5=-L1 (p2 - p1)/L1 - L2 .......(2) in which E. is the isothermal expansion coefficient, or Young's modulus of elasticity, for a solid. And further, for this special case L1 (p2 - p1)/L1 - L2 .......(3)

Although adequate removal of cuttings from beneath a drill bit is important for efficient drilling operations, very little basic data are available relative to the fundamentals of chip removal by hydraulic jets. A discussion is presented in this paper of an experimental investigation of the jetting action of hydraulic jets in removing loose particles from the bottom of a cylindrical hole. Conditions for which the jet is no longer capable of removing chips from the bottom of the hole are determined. This situation represents equilibrium between the chip removal force and chip Bolddown forces such as gravity and pressure. In most of the tests loose particles were jetted with water or a water-glycerine mixture to determine the dependence of chip removal on hole size, jet size, height of jet off bottom of hole, flow rate, particle density and fluid viscosity. ,A test with a pressurized mud system indicated that relatively low pressures can completely overcome the removal action of a hydraulic jet. Although the system studied herein is not directly applicable to a rotary drill bit, the work with such simplified systems can provide a better understanding of the chip removal action of jets, and with logical extensions it may provide a reasonable basis for the best use of fluid jets in drilling. INTRODUCTION The primary deterrent to maximum drilling rates is the inability of the drilling system to remove rock cuttings efficiently enough to prevent interference with the drilling action.1-2 The objective of chip removal studies is to permit predicting and controlling removal forces under downhole drilling conditions. Conditions at the bottom of a hole during rotary drilling are exceedingly complex and are not likely to be described in a quantitative way by investigations in terms of the total drilling action until a better understanding is developed of the simplified components of the problem.3 The present study is concerned with the elementary condition of removal of chips by a single central jet. Even this relatively simple model provides mathematical difficulties because of the turbulent nature of the flow from the jet and because of the shape of the bottom of the hole beneath the jet. Theoretical and experimental studies have been made of turbulent jets impinging normally on an infinite body and deductions based on analytical solutions to simplified problems can give some insight into the problem of cutting removal by a jet. However, because of the present lack of understanding of the behavior of the interaction between the fluid jet and the chips being removed, an experimental approach was chosen for the present study. Methods have been developed for maximizing hydraulic horsepower, impact force and jet velocity; but whether maximizing these parameters maximizes chip removal with present drilling bits has not been demonstrated. Simplifying the problem of chip removal may make it possible to develop some understanding of the manner in which the jet velocity is dissipated. Better understanding of a simple case should materially assist in extending analysis to more complicated cases. Thus, we are not concerned in the present study with the rock fracturing process itself but only with the removal of the debris from the bottom of the hole. A problem which is quite similar to the chip removal problem is the suspension of solids in stirred vessels. This problem has been studied by the chemical industry and correlations have been obtained by dimensional analysis which permit the design of mixing vats7 An approach similar to that used in the mixing vat problem is used in the analysis of the jetting data in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The test equipment arrangement shown sche-matically in Fig. 1 allows the jetting action to remove particles until an equilibrium height is attained for each combination of hole size, jet size and flow rate.*** Equilibrium conditions require that the removal force is unable to remove additional particles. THE world was not quite ready for Hal Marsh when he emerged from the California Institute of Technology in 1922 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, so, finding no promising job, he went back on a fellowship for another year. He wound up his responsibilities to it on a Saturday in June, 1923, went to work for the General Petroleum Corp. of California the next Monday morning, and has been there ever since. His present position is that of "production engineer." As such, his duties are miscellaneous and vague, but may mostly be described as investigation of equipment and methods pertaining to drilling and the production of oil, with occasionally a bit of design. The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

S. E. MADDIGAN*—I think Mr. Yen should be complimented on doing a very excellent and a very comprehensive piece of work. I was particularly pleased to note the use of X rays in a somewhat less tedious technique than pole figures. In the past I think many workers have been diverted away from the use of X rays in such investigations because of the large amount of work involved in pole figures if one is dealing with a great number of specimens. The same thing, I think, applies to the determination of orientations by counting of twins which is also a very tedious procedure; as a result several papers which have otherwise been of excellent quality have depended upon etching techniques for determination of orientation. The present paper indicates that the results reported in those previous papers were correct, but I think the use of etching techniques alone is a rather shaky basis for setting up theories in the literature. W. M. BALDWIN, JR.*—This discussion will be a short note of correction and apology. In my discussion of Brick, Martin and Angier's paper I incorrectly reported the orientation of phosphorus deoxidized copper annealed at temperatures. When I learned that Mr. Yen was preparing the present paper I asked that he correct this previous error, which he most graciously consented to do. However, through my ambiguity the correction noted on p. 59 of Mr. Yen's paper is still not the proper one. For this I take full responsibility. The orientation which I observed in phosphorus deoxidized copper at high temperatures is the (112) [111] which agrees with the pole figure given in Fig 8a, on p. 65 of Mr. Yen's paper. Our observations were made on the basis of twin counts rather than X ray determinations and therefore serve as an independent confirmation of Mr. Yen's data. M. K. We have received from L. S. Cates, the following translation, by S. W. Mudd, of early mining methods in India: In Herodotus one finds a description how Darius by aid of his good horse and his good groom Oebares got himself the Kingdom of the Per-sians. He then set up in Persia twenty satrapies assigning to each a governor and fixing the tribute which was to be paid to him by the several nations. The following description of the method of getting the gold demanded of the Indians as tribute is copied directly from Book III Thalia, paragraphs 94 to 105 omitting the diversions of Herodotus which in one case consisted of a lapse of two pages following a semicolon before the author returned to the subject. The Indians, who are more numerous than any other nation with which we are acquainted paid a tribute exceeding that off every other people, to wit, three hundred and sixty talents of gold-dust. The way in which the Indians get the plentiful supply of gold, which enables then to furnish year by year so vast an amount of gold-dust to the King, is the following: Eastward of India lies a tract which is entirely sand. Here, in this desert, there live amid the sand great ants, in size somewhat less than clogs, but bigger than foxes. The Persian king has a number of them, which have been caught by the hunters in the land whereof we are speaking. These ants make their dwellings under ground, and like the Greek ants, which they very much resemble in shape, throw up sand-heaps as they burrow. Now the sand which they throw up is full of gold. The Indians, when they go into the desert to collect this sand, take three camels and harness them together, a female in the middle and a male on either side, in a leading-rein. The rider sits on the female, and they are particular to choose for the purpose one that has just dropped . her young; for their female camels can run as fast as horses, while they bear burdens very much better.

KINETICS and mechanism of sulfation reactions have been studied extensively. Qualitative and quantitative data are reported for the kinetics and mechanism of sulfation reaction of copper oxide pellets;''2 yet it remains a controversial Subject. The mechanism and kinetics of the sulfation of zinc oxide powder (B.D.H. analar quality) were studied by gravimetric technique. A spring of high-carbon steel wire with accuracy well within 0.2 mg was used for measuring weight change. The sample was taken in a Pyrex glass bucket, hanging freely inside a Pyrex glass tube reactor, with a gold wire attached to the spring, the reactor being surrounded by a movable furnace (double wound type) with a temperature control within *5"C. Flow of oxygen, 60 cu cm per min, and sulfur dioxide, 45 cu cm per min, were measured through calibrated flowmeters and the mixture dried over PZ05 before entering the reactor. The experimental results are presented in Figs. 1 and 2. The plot of weight change of zinc oxide, giving the amount of zinc sulfate formed, was found to be linear over the temperature range of 500" to 700° C and up to a conversion of approximately 60 pct, as beyond it they divert from linearity.' The rate of sulfation was found to be affected by total flow rate of gases at a fixed ratio of SO2/O2, up to 60 cu cm per min, and was found to be linearly dependent on quantity of total powdered sample taken. The plot of rate of sulfation of zinc oxide, 70 mg, with varying amounts of vanadium pentoxide, at a constant ratio of gases as mentioned above, and at a constant temperature of 625"C, was also found to be linear as seen in Fig. 2. Extrapolation to zero V2O5 addition gives the same rate of sulfation, as in case of pure zinc oxide, 70 mg. Vz05 was prepared by heating ammonium vanadate at 600°C for 15 min in a muffle furnace. The available literature points out that the theory of sulfation that has received the maximum support postulates the following mechanism for sulfation of ZnS: 2ZnS + 30, = 2Zn0 + 2SOZ; the ZnO formed acts as a catalyst for the reaction, 2 S02 + O2 = 2S03. This SO3 reacts with ZnO to give zinc sulfate. It is suggested here that the above widely supported mechanism is operative in the sulfation reaction and that the rate-controlling step in the sulfation reaction of ZnO is the formation of SO3 from SO, and 0,. Samuel T. Wellman, Cleveland pioneer steel man, who was often referred to as the "father of the open-hearth process of the United States," died suddenly on July 11, 1919, of heart disease, at Stratton, Me. For more than half a century, he was closely identified with the improvement of equipment used in the making of steel and contributed a number of inventions that virtually revolutionized the industry. Mr. Wellman was born Feb. 5, 1847, at Wareham, Mass., his father at the time being superintendent of the Nashua Iron Co., Nashua, N. H. After attending public school and a year at Norwich University, he served in the Civil War as a corporal of the first New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. He went to Pittsburgh in 1867 and assisted in starting the first crucible steel melting furnace built in America at the works of Anderson, Cook & Co. It melted a ton of steel with an average of 1000 Ib. of nut coal, which cost less than $1, while the melting of a ton of steel in crucibles in the old fashioned coke furnace took three tons of the very best coke, costing from $2 to $3 per ton. This furnace was a great success and in a very few years had driven the coke furnace out of use. From Anderson, Cook & Co., Mr. Wellman went to the Singer, Nimick & Co. works, Pittsburgh, where he built two crucible steel melting furnaces of the same type. After that he spent some time in the office of the Siemens agents in Boston and also at steel works in different parts of the country, starting crucible steel furnaces. He then went to the Bay State Iron Works in South Boston, Mass., where he built the first open-hearth furnace that was a commercial success in the United States. It made steel of a much better quality than had previously been made in this country. The principal use to which it was put in those days was the manufacture of locomotive fire-boxes. From South Boston, he went hack to the old works in New Hampshire where his father was still superintendent, and built for it an open-hearth furnace, a plate mill, and a bar mill. In 1873, Mr. Wellman went to Cleveland to design and build the plant of the Otis Steel Co. He remained with this company for 16 years as engineer and superintendent. During this time he developed the open-hearth charging machine and introduced the electromagnet for handling pig iron and scrap steel. The first charging machine was operated by hydraulic power, and although it was not entirely satisfactory it performed the work fairly well and encouraged its inventor to build another one, which was driven by electric motors. For the past year, MBD has been engaged in a lively discussion on a name change for the Division. To complicate things, more than one name change has been proposed! There has been much discussion on the subject, as anyone who has attended the Annual MBD Business Meeting or read [jE] knows. The position of many of our members is well known. There is, however, one group that has not been heard from. These are the future members-the present students and those even younger who are yet to elect our profession. As one who has traversed the academic-industrial interface several times, I think I am qualified to speak for this group. Before going further I think it wise to state unequivocally that our Division should adequately represent our profession. The whole profession is just too small to chop into a plethora of pieces: "I'm not a mineral processing engineer, I'm an ore dresser-well, actually, I specialize in comminution, specifically in grinding, mostly in autogeneous grinding-primary autogeneous grinding that is-and my 'thing' is really iron ores, taconites, mind you!" Enough to confuse even those that keep the faith, and certainly we can't build a profession on such narrow pieces. Either an employer can hire a professional who knows the entire profession or he can't. As more and more companies search out opportunities in the mining and metallurgical fields and as environmental considerations bring into question even our technically well proven processes and procedures, there is a greater need than ever be- fore for a well-rounded mineral processing engineer well versed in all of the process possibilities. What is needed is one who can take an ore-or municipal trash for that matter-and produce there from a valuable product by the most appropriate means. It doesn't really matter if this is done physically, chemically or thermally.

I. N. KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa. (written discussion*).-The possibility of storing natural gas in the sands f exhausted gas pools might be, in many cases, a, good engineering proposition, but it cannot be considered a practical business proposition tinder the usual competitive leasing and operating conditions that exist in the natural-gas business. Under the usual conditions of diversified land ownership and leasing with all lack of cooperation, various operators drill into the same pool or reservoir and drain out the gas under each other's land. To attempt to use for storage purposes the depleted sands f any one pool having such various competing ownerships would be highly impractical, considered from operating and business standpoints, unless there was cooperation with the interests owning adjacent wells and leases or the purchase f the same. Also, it would be very difficult to find out whether all old or abandoned wells in any pool had been properly, plugged and thus prevent the waste of gas brought from a distance for storage. Another objection to Mr. Panyity's proposition is the probability that no lease made in the past contemplated the use of a gas sand for storage purposes. Very likely, then, the operator would have a lawsuit on his hands for the unlawful use of a lease if he attempted the storage f such gas without first obtaining additional lease rights. In some instances salt water could not be pumped from a gas well in the customary way of pumping oil wells on account of the deposition of salt in the pump valves or in the working barrel or tubing. Very ingenious compressed air jets have been devised and arranged with suitable piping to blow out such salt-water accumulations. In many pools it would be impracticable to drill a water pocket below a gas sand, as suggested, since such deeper drilling would probably. intensify water troubles.

J. STEVENS*—The authors state that the contamination in the metal was due mostly to the ladle refractories. Did the contamination vary with different brands of refractories or different qualities in the ladle ? C. B. POST (authors' reply)—That would be expected. In our shop we have used a grade of firebrick which is fairly standard. We do use high refractory nozzles to combat this erosion and high refractory sleeves, but there is such a problem when you get a skull in a ladle you just cannot use these high refractory bricks; you rip out the whole ladle getting the skull cleaned up. The acid bricks form a glass, and you can pull the skull out when you do get them. I believe you might find variations among the different refractories depending on how much silicon is in the brick. This determines how much silica is going into the interface between the steel and the brick. Our brick is about 35 pet alumina and 65 pet silica. With a brick of 35 pet alumina in the slag patches new calculations would have to be made. R. PARDEE*—Where can you draw the line in determining the refractories as being a silica refractory ? C. B. POST—More silica than about 50 pet. I think perhaps that is generally the criterion. The brick we use is a good high grade fire brick. T. S. WASHBURN*--With reference to the higher silicon that is recommended as a result of this investigation, is it contemplated that the specified range would be raised to 0.40-0.60 pet silicon, or possibly 0.50-1.00 pet silicon? These higher silicon ranges would affect the physical properties of the steel and consequently there might be some complications with respect to educating the consumers to 'accept this revision of the conventional analysis. C. B. POST—It will take considerable work. Take AMS 6260 as an example. Ordinarily this specification calls for 60 or 75 manganese. Silicon has some

W. G. BURGERS*—It seems almost certain that this investigation shows the way which finally, when more analogous data have been obtained, must lead to the understanding of many features of preferential growth-directions of crystals and of the occurrence of recrystallization textures. In this connection I should like to mention that Mr. Tiedema in my laboratory succeeded in developing an analogous method for preparing crystals in aluminum plates with a chosen crystal-lographic plane and direction parallel to the surface of the plate (to be published in Cryst. Ada). If such crystals were grown in high purity aluminum and test-pieces containing a few crystals such as the authors describe were prepared for this metal, it might be possible that due to the absence of growth obstructing particles, even in this low-melting point metal boundary displacements approaching equilibrium positions might be realized. With regard to the apparently marked drop in surface energy for orientation differences approaching zero degree, and orientation differences approaching those existing between twins, it seems of interest to remark that in aluminum a crystal growing at the expense of fine grained material cannot (or can only very reluctantly) absorb grains in either ap- proximately (within 5—10°) parallel or spinel twin orientation (May, Tiedema and Burgers, Nature (1948) 162, 740 and Cryst. Ada in press). Consequently with aluminum the method of preparing a crystal with a definite orientation does not succeed when the new crystal has to absorb its own texture; for example it is not possible to grow in a polycrystalline wire with a [lll]-texture a crystal with a [11 Indirection parallel to the wire axis (Tiedema: Cryst. Ada, in press). Finally I should like to mention the well-known fact (Burgers: Proc. Acad. Amsterdam (1947) 50, 723) that prolonged annealing of recrystallized nickel-iron sheet with cube-texture never succeeds in transforming this into one single crystal of the same orientation; if, by "secondary re-crystallization," large crystals are formed
