The magnetic iron ores of the Rees & Wilder tract, Unaka Mountains, East Tennessee, and North Carolina, so far as examined by me, are peculiar in containing considerable quantities of the mineral zircon in dark red-brown crystals, ranging in size from one-tenth of an inch, or less, to five-tenths of an inch in length. As zircons are decomposed by fusion with alkalies, the constituents may exert some favorable influence upon the iron product, which is generally acknowledged to be of superior quality. Among the bills now pending in Congress is one to authorize exploration for and disposition of coal, phosphate, sodium, oil, oil shale, and gas on, public domain. One, to provide protection and government revenue for potash and for zinc ores and products. One to prevent withdrawal of mineral lands from entry and occupancy by law, also to promote, production of quicksilver, tungsten, sulfate, pyrites, and sulfur, and of manganese and manganiferous ores. Three resolutions have been introduced to suspend requirements of annual assessment work on mining claims during year 1919 and one to relieve owners of mining claims mustered into military service.

In most mines the major contribution to the dust exposure of miners arises from rock hand- ling. Scooptrams are frequently used and produce 8 to 1300 mg of respirable dust for each ton of ore loaded. It is shown that sprays at drawpoints are not fully effective in wetting the rock and suggestions for improved wetting techniques are given. Techniques for improved dust control by ventilation and local filtration are described. The problem of dust from ore- passes and dumps on tramming levels are outlined.

THE diffusivities of gold in polycrystalline copper have been determined in the temperature range from 700° to 1000°C by the utilization of the neutron-activation method. Martin, Johnson, and ~saro' used this method for their investigation of the diffusion of gold into copper at 375° and 550°C for 59 days in order to circumvent the experimental difficulties imposed by the 2.7-day half-life of Au-198. Apropos of metals low in the series illustrated by Dr. Butler's Table II, it is interesting to note that Cress and Feldman reported traces of platinum metals in several samples of alunite. They found, chemically and spectrographically, several traces of platinum, palladium, and rhodium in alunite from Sugar Loaf Peak, near Quartzite, Ariz.; silver, platinum, and rhodium in alunite from Rio Grande County, Colorado; and traces of rubidium and gallium in various samples of alunite. These authors stated that the platinum metals appear to be present as oxides and suggested deposition by hydrothermal solutions under near-surface conditions.

Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and shallow evaporite brine. Deposits of these materials occur in many parts of the world. Those advantageously located supply the present lithium industry. Less favorably located deposits will come into production as markets expand and present sources are depleted. In this discussion, materials listed as reserves include fully explored and partly explored deposits. For those closely drilled and assayed, the data provide measurements rather than estimates, and such reserve tonnages are "proved." For deposits partly explored, the data support reserve estimates of "probable" tonnages. Materials lacking exploratory data are classed as resources, and their "possible" tonnages are inferred mostly from indirect evidence and are essentially objectives for exploration. All figures for pegmatite ore apply to total materials in the ground.

Wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and to make specification sand. The application of wet grinding rod mills is well understood. Until recently, there have been very few installations of dry grinding rod mills. The selection of dry grinding rod mills follows the basic principles established for the selection of wet grinding rod mills. The basic Bond Formulae1 [ ] is used to select mills when using grindability test results as the basis for selection. W is multi- plied by the 1.3 wet to dry grinding factor established from wet and dry ball milling experience, and then by any other applicable inefficiency factors.1 Dry grinding rod mills have also been selected by scaling up bench scale continuous rod mill tests and pilot plant tests.

Upon nomination of the President, _the following Committee on Membership was appointed: Karl Eilers, Chairman, Arthur. S. Dwight, Lewis W. Francis, Louis D. Huntoon, Arthur L. Walker. The following resolution was then unanimously passed: WHEREAS, the integrity and life of this nation is dependent upon its ability to successfully defend itself against foreign aggression and attack, and WHEREAS, it is necessary that the nation he properly prepared to the end that our untrained patriotic volunteers he not uselessly slaughtered and our country disgraced and defeated, be it therefore RESOLVED: That the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers believe that compulsory universal military training should be at once instituted and that adequate, complete and immediate preparedness, should he provided. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That, we believe that thorough and complete preparedness in the army, the navy and the industries of the country is vital; anything less is unsatisfactory and inefficient and may result in disaster to the nation.

It is estimated that during 1936 world consumption of petroleum, its products and related fuels reached an all-time peak of 1,757,778,000 bbl., an increase of 143,000,000 bbl. over 1935. As indicated in Table 1, world output of petroleum and related fuels exceeded demand by 92,510,000 bbl. during the year, as compared to an excess output of 88,000,000 bbl. during 1935. Production within the United States exceeded domestic demand by approximately 51,000,-000 bbl. in 1936, as compared to an excess output of 53,000,000 bbl. in the previous year. Outside the United States, production exceeded demand by 41,510,000 bbl. in 1936 and by 35,000,000 bbl. in 1935, indicating that foreign output is making no progress toward curtailment in line with demand. Table 1 also combines excess production in the United States with the favorable balance of exports over imports, showing that stocks in the United States were reduced by 23,400,000 bbl. in 1936, as compared to 22,447,000 bbl. in the previous year. Far reaching changes in the executive machinery of the Federal Government are proposed in bills recently introduced in each House of Congress. The Department of the Interior will become the Department of Public Works, if the legislation proposed is enacted; the main idea is to assemble all engineering activities of the Government in one department. Such bureaus of the Interior Department as are non-engineering in character are to be placed under the jurisdiction of appropriate departments, while engineering bureaus from other departments are to be included in the Department of Public Works. The bill proposes that the Patent Office is to be removed from the Interior Department and placed under the Department of Commerce. The Bureau of Pensions is assigned to the Department of the Treasury. The Bureau of Education goes to the Labor Department. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is transferred to the Department of Labor, with the proviso that the engineering and construction work and the land and mineral surveys now performed under the direction of the Bureau of Indian Affairs are to he prosecuted under the Department of Public Works. St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the Freedman's Hospital in Washington are assigned to the Treasury Department. Columbia Institution for the Deaf and the Howard University go to the Bureau of Education, under the provisions of the bill. On the other hand, the Department of Public Works is to absorb the Supervising Architect's Office of the Treasury Department; the Construction Division, River and Harbor Improvements, Mississippi River Commission, and California Debris Commission of the War Department; the Bureau of Standards and the Coast and Geodetic Survey of the Department of Commerce; the Bureau of Public Roads and the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture.
