Partition (Tromp) curves, as used in diagnosing problems in coal cleaning equipment, are discussed and classified using five arbitrarily chosen types to represent, on a scale from one to five, system performance. Causes of unsatisfactory Tromp curves for various cleaning units, ranging from operational inadequacies to problems best corrected by the equipment builder, are analyzed.

The Mining Engineering Society of the State College of Washington, Pullman, Wash., has elected the following officers for this semester: F. MASON, President, WILLIAM WHITE, Vice-President,. L. E. TRAEGER, Secretary and Treasurer. The Society holds meetings every two weeks at which papers on mining and metallurgical topics are presented by students and members, of the faculty. At the meeting of Oct. 25, Prof. H. R. Robbins gave an interesting talk upon the Rankin Process for the treatment of base-metal ores. In this process the metals are extracted by the use of nitric acid, the acid -being recovered almost entirely. Prof. Robbins thinks the process has great possibilities, but it has not yet been worked on a commercial scale. The Missouri Mining Association, the student organization at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., has. elected the following officers for the ensuing year: L. W. EHLERS, President, H. A. KLUGE, Treasurer, J. G. REILLY, Vice-President, N. E. RITTER, Secretary.

Discussion of the paper of F. C. NEWTON, presented at the New York meeting, Feb-ruary, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 473 to 477. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-The results of these large-scale experiments, which were carried on at Perth Amboy, show that there are many differences between theoretical conceptions and their applications to work on a large scale. The author has given reasons why the results of bringing a desilverizing kettle to the high melting point of the zinc-silver alloy, Zn3Ag2, melting at 665° C., are not satisfactory. In all probability the alloy is dissolved in the lead; it may also be decomposed by the lead; the practical result is that this high temperature does not work. It remains now for the laboratory man to carry on systematic experiments

The process for determining phosphorus in iron now in most general use in the laboratories of iron and steel works, is, I think, the one proposed bv Mr. Emmerton." In this process the solution of the iron for precipitation by ammonium molybdate is effected by treating the iron with nitric acid, evaporating to hard dryness in a dish, taking up with hydrochloric acid and driving off the greater portion of the hydrochloric by nitric acid. This procedure accomplishes, first, the destruction of all the carbonaceous matters; and, second; it renders all the silica insoluble. Experience has proved the former—the complete oxidation of the carbon—to be absolutely essential; but the explanation usually given, namely, that unless the carbon compounds are destroyed they will have a solvent action on the yellow precipitate, I am inclined to

In leaching ores at atmospheric pressure it is often desirable to apply high reagent concentration, long exposure time, and elevated temperature. All of these conditions tend to increase the treatment cost. In conventional leaching, direct or countercurrent, the leaching fluid is needed to transport the solids through the process. This requires relatively large volumes of fluid and limits the reagent concentration economically feasible. The relatively high dilution also increases fuel cost if leaching is to be done above ambient temperature. Heating of water is expensive.

Every 12 minutes, a cable operated skip car appears from beneath the desert surface of Arizona's Papago Indian Reservation. The Papagos have become quite used to the car, particularly those whose paychecks depend upon its regular appearance. The 24-ton capacity skip or tramcar hauls copper ore out of the North Decline of Hecla Mining Company's new mine about 30 mi south of Casa Grande. While there's nothing particularly glamorous about the skip itself, the railroad system upon which it travels is interesting because of the unconventional way it was built.

Changes became necessary in dredging methods employed in Idaho through passage of the Dredge Mining Protective Act (1954). Among other provisions, the law requires dredge operators to construct settling ponds of sufficient capacity and character to reasonably clarify the water used in the mining process before such water is discharged into the stream. Porter Bros. Corp., a placer mining company with many years operating experience in Oregon and Montana, became interested in strategic mineral placers in Idaho in 1950 when it was learned that prospectors had discovered a radioactive mineral deposit in Bear Valley Creek, 95 miles northeast of Boise. The company acquired mining leases and proceeded with exploration and development work on the property. After extensive research had resulted in the determination of successful separation processes, contracts were negotiated with the federal government and deliveries of columbium-tantalum and uranium concentrates commenced in 1956.

The Institute is custodian of funds for support of numerous gold medals and prizes and has representatives on boards awarding still others. Details regarding the Institute Awards are given be- low. The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.

IT, HAS been my privilege to be Chairman of Engineering Council for very nearly three years, during which time Mr. A. D. Flinn, the. Secretary, and myself, have seen the organization develop until it is functioning smoothly and accomplishing what it can with the money at its disposal. The earliest attempt at what may be called an Engi¬neering Council, of which. I have any knowledge, was made six or seven years ago when the four Founder Societies each appointed two men, who occasionally met to discuss matters submitted to them which were of importance to, the, profession as a whole. I was one of the representatives of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

JET-PIERCING experiments were first conducted over ten years ago underground at the Soudan mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. Results were successful enough to encourage further research. The next field tests were made on the Reserve Mining Co. property at Babbitt in 1941. These tests showed that blastholes could be produced in taconite ore by the use of a flame and proper fluxing agents. The war put a stop to the experimental program shortly after these tests. Extensive field tests were resumed at Babbitt in 1946. In these tests nominal 6-in. blastholes were produced at an average rate of 10 ft per hour. Rates as high as 17 ft per hour were obtained for short periods. The experimental equipment used resembles a portable rotary-drill rig mounted on a truck. The standard steel mast has been extended to 46 ft to accommodate a blowpipe capable of producing holes over 30 ft deep. All auxiliary equipment including winch for raising and lowering the blowpipe, drive motor for the rotary table, pumps and tanks for process fluids, electric power plant, and control instruments are mounted on the truck. In accordance with the requirements of By-Law LX,- I beg leave to submit herewith the report of the Library Committee for the year 1916. The activities shown by the sale of the Institute's publications during the year are somewhat larger than last year, due principally to the increased sale of special editions on account of the larger sale of the Posepny and Emmons Volumes, owing to increased advertising and to the reduction in price of the Emmons Volume. The sales were distributed as follows: Sale of Transactions $3,237.07 Sale of Special Editions 1,722.50 Sale of Bulletins and Pamphlets 2,263.95 Total $7,223.52, The Institute library has now been merged with the libraries of the. other three Founder Societies and is known and administered as the Library of the United - Engineering Society. When this merger, was effected, a proviso was made that the books contained in the Institute library up to the date of the merger were still to be considered as the individual property of the Institute, and this arrangement applied also to the libraries of the other two Founder Societies. At the time that the American Society of Civil Engineers joined as a fourth Founder Society, they immediately turned over their entire library to the United Engineering Society, relinquishing all property rights in the books entirely.

The Minister of Geology of the Soviet Union P.Ya. Antropov, recently visited China and claims that this country occupies one of the foremost places in the world in reserves of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, antimony, iron ore, coal, and phosphates. Occurrences of economic value of chromite, nickel, gold, beryllium, tantalum, niobium, rare earths, and asbestos have also been reported. MINERAL RESOURCES Coal: The inferred reserves of coal are estimated at at 1,500 billion tons. A considerable part of the coal reserves is represented by coking coal, 80% of which is bituminous. Thicknesses of coal seams range up to 150 ft in the principal deposits located in northern and northeastern China. The total output of coal in 1958, 270 million tons, was produced by an army of 20 million people mainly in small mines operated by the agricultural communes. Conveyors were first used underground at Miami Copper Co., in the latter part of 1947. At that time some of the stoping area was too heavy and too close to the haulage level to use conventional haulage. To get the haulage drifts out from under the stoping area belt conveyors were used for the additional lateral transfer. Since 1947 more than 8 million tons have been mined in this manner, with as many as four belt type stopes in production at one time. When the mining plan for the new low grade was worked out, it was decided to use belts on what otherwise would have been short train haulage transfers to move the ore laterally to centrally located concrete ore passes. One group of these stopes has grizzly levels on the 570, with a belt level on the 670; the other group has grizzly levels on the 720 and belt levels on the 820, with the concrete ore passes bottoming on the 1000, or the existing train haulage level.

THE name engineer makes a very strong appeal to one who appreciates the mechanism underlying the fabric of our civilization. Engineers are scouts of civilization. We send them ahead into the lone 'places-the wilderness, the jungles, the great watery expanses, to build the highways necessary for civilized man. The engineers must deal with Nature, with that mysterious dynamic thing we call "force," with materials. It is their function to direct the human activity necessary to coordinate these forces and material in order to make them serve the needs and aspirations of men. Because of my high conception of the engineering profession I was glad to accept the invitation to address The American Society of Mechanical Engineers to voice my understanding of the possibilities of your work as engineers of industry, and to suggest what seems to me the responsibility of the-engineer to the whole modern industrial system.

The production of oil in Mexico during 1929 was approximately 45,000,000 bbl., or 5,000,000 bbl. less than in 1928. The production of the fields near Tampico showed a decline of over 10,000,000 bbl. for both the light and heavy crudes, which was partly offset by an increase of over 5,000,000 bbl. in the production of the fields in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. During 1929 the retrenchment policy followed by practically all the companies was continued and no material improvement should be expected until the unsatisfactory conditions that brought about this situation are remedied. A new administration has just assumed control in Mexico; it should remain in power for 6 years, and the progress of the oil industry during that time will depend primarily on the policy pursued by the new government with respect to oil development. Development During 1929, there were drilled 214 wells as compared with 371 in 1928 and 583 in 1927. The percentage of producers in 1929 was 47.2 as against 34 per cent. in 1928. The new wells did not show water as quickly as in 1928, particularly in the Cacalilao field, where the greatest number of producers was brought in, their average initial daily production being 380 bbl. The flush daily production per well in the Southern fields was 1730 bbl., while the wells in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec came in with an average of 770 bbl. Development is summarized in Table 1. In the Southern fields 63 wells were drilled in 1929, of which 23 were producers, the best being drilled in Paso Real. This development tends to show that the southern extension of Dos Bocas-Alamo fault from Alamo to San Isidro terminates at San Isidro. The two wildcat wells completed in 1929, one in Magiscatzin and the other in Xicotencatl, were failures, and at the end of the year there were eight wildcat wells drilling and material was being hauled for two more.

Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness.
