The energy stored in the compressed natural gas absorbed in or otherwise associated with the oil in reservoir sands is usually the most important factor in oil recovery. It is recognized that hydrostatic pressure and gravity may aid materially in the drainage of oil, but in the early life of the majority of fields the principal source of propulsive energy is the expansive force of the gas associated with the oil. Since gas is admittedly the most important factor in the production of oil, its control so as to produce the maximum amount of oil with the minimum amount of gas will be reflected in increased oil recovery from reservoir sands. Controlling the gas means regulating its expansion so that the velocity of flow of oil through the channels in the reservoir sands is neither so great that frictional resistance becomes excessive nor so slow that the gas, because it can travel more rapidly than oil through the irregular passageways in the sands, will by-pass and reach the well without. doing useful work in bringing oil from the sands. Oil and gas flow from the reservoir sands to the well because of differences in pressure. The rate of flow is dependent upon the differential pressures existing in the sands and in the well. By altering the amount of back-pressure maintained on the well this differential pressure can be regulated and changed from a maximum (well flowing "wide open") to a minimum when there will be no flow. Oil and gas flow through the irregular channels in reservoir sands at different rates mainly because of the fact that one is a liquid and the other a gas. Therefore, because oil and gas have different characteristics of flow, application of back-pressure, changes the rates of flow with relation to one another so that wide variations in gas-oil ratios are possible. Obviously, the formation gas energy will be utilized most efficiently when a unit of gas delivers the maximum amount of oil to the well. Determination of Necessary Back-pressure The amount of back-pressure that should be maintained against the producing sand in order that the minimum amount of gas will be produced with each barrel of oil can be determined only by actual field tests made

THE thermal processes for the production of metallic magnesium can be divided into two general classifications, the direct reduction of magnesia with carbon and the indirect reduction of compounds of magnesium by reducing agents that are themselves products of carbon reduction. The latter are so chosen as to cause reduction of magnesium compounds wherein only the magnesium is liberated in the vapor phase. Reducing agents used are: calcium carbide, silicon carbide, silicon, aluminum, various silicides or combinations of calcium, aluminum, silicon in iron. All of these are products of highly endothermic reactions and, with the exception of scrap aluminum, can be produced in an open, submerged arc furnace; that is, the arc is covered only by the charge itself. The more investment in energy required to prepare such a reducing agent, the less is the energy required in the subsequent step to reduce the magnesium compound to the metal. It is impossible, however, to avoid the laws of thermodynamics, no matter how much circumambulation is resorted to in the preparation of successively more powerful reducing agents. Since each such step carries forward its own inefficiencies, it appears evident that the ultimate status of such processes is dependent upon the development of by-products. EARLY EXPERIMENTS IN DIRECT REDUCTION The direct reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon has a decided appeal to both the scientist and the industrialist. The successful production of the carbothermic plant at Permanente is a significant fact in the substantiation of this concept. Like most developments, however, the history of carbon reduction of magnesia is not one of triumph after triumph, or immediate heady success to the investigators. It is understood that one of the early investigators conducted an experiment wherein he placed carbon and magnesia in one end of an evacuated tube and managed to heat this end to a temperature high enough that magnesia and carbon deposited at the other end of the tube. The charge, unreduced, appeared to have been completely transported from the hot to the cold end of the tube. This raised doubt for some time as to whether magnesia could be reduced at all with carbon. It was correctly suspected, however, that the magnesia was in fact reduced and the resultant magnesium vapor and carbon monoxide reacted upon one another upon reduction in temperature to reform the starting ingredients. Attempts were then made to dilute the two vapors by passing a considerable stream of hydrogen through an arc furnace charged with magnesia and carbon. Peruvian production for the year 1935 amounted to 17,064,879 bbl., a record amount for any year, bringing the cumulative production of the country up to 188 million barrels. The 1935 figure is an increase of 785,769 bbl. over the 1934 total. The property of the International Petroleum Co. contributed 636,812 bbl. of this increase, and the Lobitos property 158,625 barrels. Exploration work in the country was again active, with attention focused on three areas, the Huallaga River, Lake Titicaca and the Coastal Zone of the Province of Tumbes. It is reported that in the Huallaga River area the Selden Breck Construction Co. has completed geological and engineering studies on its Pachitea River concessions and has ordered a drilling rig. In the Lake Titicaca region further studies in the vicinity of Pusi were made by Government geologists. During the period from 1906 to 1915, the Pirin anticline in this area produced 285,936 bbl. of low-grade crude. The Government holds 120,000 hectares of reserved lands in this area. In the Coastal Zone of the Province of Tumbes explorations by the Government were continued on the National Reserve, and a test location has been selected in the Quebrada Zapotal about 10 miles from the Port of Zorritos. An order has been placed in the United States for drilling equipment. LaBrea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the LeBrea-Parinas Estate reached an all-time high in 1935 of 14,756,914 bbl., an increase of 636,812 bbl. over the 1934 record. The total production from 1890 to 1935 was 148,541,523 bbl. During 1935 a total of 63,021 ft. was drilled in new wells and 5449 ft. in deepening existing wells; 23 wells were deepened and 29 new wells were completed, of which 27 were producers and 2 were dry holes. At the end of the year 2873 wells had been drilled on the Estate, of which 1838 were still productive. The remaining 1035 wells represent abandoned producers or dry holes. Practically all the drilling on the property has been done with cable tools, but during 1934 three strings of rotary tools were introduced. E. A. Steigerwald (Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, Inc.1— he authors' results clearly indicate that cracking can be produced by the hydrogen pressure developed during a charging operation. This type of cracking or blistering has also been observed in polycrystalline materials24"28 when the charging conditions are sufficiently severe and is often referred to as irreversible embrittlement since it cannot be removed by a baking treatment. There are additional data, however, which must be considered before a pressure theory can be generally employed to account for all failures which occur as a result of hydrogen. In many cases, hydrogen embrittlement in a tensile test or in delayed failures under static loads is a reversible phenomena which cannot be simply explained on the basis of preexisting cracks generated by the charging operation. It is this aspect of the problem which has prompted many investigators to seek mechanisms other than hydrogen pressure to explain their results.24'n728 Fig. 15 indicates an example where, under specific experimental circumstances, hydrogen embrittlement can occur at liquid nitrogen temperatures. In this case, which has been previously decribed,'' specimens were charged with varying quantities of hydrogen, immediately quenched, and tested in liquid nitrogen (-320°F). A companion set of identical specimens were charged, aged at 300°F to remove the hydrogen, and also tested at -320°F. When the current density was greater than lo-' amp per sq in., embrittlekent occurred in both sets of specimens, indicating that cracking had occurred during charging and the embrittlement, as in the case of Fe-Si single crystals, was irreversible. At current densities between approximately 103 and lo-' amp per sq in, the embrittlement was present only for those specimens which contained hydrogen during the testing sequence. The embrittlement was therefore reversible with respect to the aging and charging operations. Since extensive hydrogen movement would not be expected at -320°F, it is difficult to reconcile these data with a mechanism which requires pressure and pressure dependent growth of preexisting cracks. There are other features of hydrogen embrittlement such as the reversibility of the incubation time for delayed failure with respect to applied stressg0 and the influence of prestraining31 which are also difficult to explain using a pressure model. Any general mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement will have to consider the reversible aspects of the embrittlement data as well as the irreversible portion which has been clearly presented for the Fe-Si crystals and which is consistent with a pressure model. A. S. Tetelman and W. D. Robertson (authors' reply)—he authors agree with Dr. Steigerwald that a general mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement must be applicable in all cases where embrittlement occurs. Dr. Steigerwald's experiments were performed on an iron alloy which has an extremely complex microstructure, and therefore does not lend itself to the direct and detailed observations that can be made in Fe-Si. The change in the characteristics of cracks as a consequence of annealing at 300°F is not really known in detail but it is probable that stress-relaxation (blunting) occurs, dislocations produced near the crack tips will be pinned by carbon atoms, and hydrogen will be lost to the atmosphere. Any, or all of these effects of annealing will alter the ease with which a crack subsequently propagates under applied stress. A quantitative treatment of the problem must take these effects into account. Since diffusional processes are presumably eliminated at -320°F, the general mechanism proposed by Dr. Steigerwald's colleagues cannot be operative at this temperature. A detailed discussion of the general' inapplicability of this mechanism has been presented elsewhere. However, the data presented by Dr. Steigerwald in his discussion can be explained in terms of a pressure model. Crack propagation under internal pressure P and applied stress occurs when where is the total energy expended in creating new surface area and by plastic work at the crack tip. The total crack length increases with increasing current density, since we have shown that it systematically increases with hydrogen concentration and Dr. Steigerwald has shown that hydrogen concentration increases with current density. For large L (high current density) Eq. [I] can be satisfied even if P = 0 and the embrittlement process does not require the presence of hydrogen. Both smith1 and wells2 have shown that the dif-fusivity of carbon in austenite increases rapidly with increasing carbon concentration. Smith has shown, in addition, that part but not all of this increase can be attributed to the concentration dependence of the activity coefficient of carbon in austenite. From the work of Eshelby', it is known that, because of the image displacements, there is a uniform dilatation of the material in a body containing random centers of dilatation. It is thus tempting to explain the enhanced diffusivity as resulting from this apparent negative pressure caused by the interstitial carbon atoms.* That is, the activation free energy for diffusion is not directly a function of concentration if we consider that the alloy is subjected to a concentration-dependent pressure. To proceed with a quantitative solution, it is necessary to determine the activation volume AV for the diffusion process. An exact calculation of AV is quite a difficult problem and does not appear to have been solved as yet. A simpler procedure is to use the semiempirical, macroscopic theory of seyes' which relates the activation free energy AG to AV. Keyes has shown that for many types of diffusion processes the following relationship is valid Where p is the Gruneisen constant and x the compressibility. This relationship is based on the assumption that AG can be identified with strain-energy terms. In general there will also be contributions to AG due to a change in the energy of the valence electrons of the metal; thus the relation must be considered largely empirical. Surprisingly, for self-diffusion where it is well-known that the electronic contribution is quite important,' the Keyes relation works quite well for many systems. For interstitial diffusion where it might be expected that the relationship is on a firmer theoretical basis, the limited experimental data available is not in particularly good agreement as can be seen from Table I. However, it must be remembered that besides the uncertain basis of the Keyes formula there is considerable uncertainty in some of the experimental values of AV. The only real justification for using the Keyes formula in the present analysis is that it gives a result which satisfactorily solves the problem at hand and, further, there are no more reliable procedures for calculating AV available. The coefficient 3 in Eq. [I] is determined such that the room-temperature value for x is to be used. The activation entropy AS is estimated as 8.95 x 10"3 kcal per OK mole using the values in Table I1 and the Zener" relation AS = PAHIT, where p is a dimensionless thermal coefficient of Young's modulus which is to be evaluated at low values of T/T,, aH is the activation enthalpy, and T, is the melting temperature of the alloy. The resulting value of AG at 1000°C is 25.6 kcal per mole. The Gruneisen constant (p = 3cup/XC,), where p is the density, is evaluated from the room-temperature data in Table I1 after calculating C, from the relation. A value of p = 8.32 g per cu cm based on the value of a. in Table I is used. The result is C, = 5.0 x lo6 erg per g, H = 2.32, and AV = 3.41 cu cm per mole at 1000°C and infinite carbon dilution. It is assumed that the activation volume is not a function of carbon concentration. The theory could be refined to consider AV a function of concentration, but due to the uncertainties in the parameters there seems little justification for this. Carbon dissolved in austenite forms a nonideal solid solution, so that in writing an equation for. the diffusivity of carbon it is necessary to take into account the change in activity coefficient with concentration. Before examining a fire-clay in the labori~tory for its resistance to heat or to fluxes, the sample is always ground to an impalpable powder. But when the clay is actually used for the manufacture of bricka, blocks, pots, etc., it is not ground to a uniform size, the particles varying from coarse grains to the finest slimes. The natural inference is that the tests with finely-ground substances mill give lower results than if the materials are tested just as they are going to be used. The, following experiments were made to find out how far this inference is justified. The method employed for fusion was Seger's direct method,* and, for fluxing, the modified Bischof method, described in the paper on that subject presented at the present meeting, The first question to be decided was, how large the test-cones ought to be made, to include representative proportions of the diflerentrsized particles colnposing the mixture. This was subjected to a screenanalysis with the following results :

A general rate equation is derived for gas -solid reactions in metallurgical processes by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter-phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. This equation takes care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. The parabolic law,' McKewan's equationa derived with the assumption of interface area control and the equation derived by Kawasaki et al. with the assumption of purely diffusion control are found as the limiting cases of the corresponding forms of the general rate equation. Many metallurgical processes involving gas-solid reactions have been extensively studied. The common examples of these processes include the reduction of oxides to metallic products, the roasting of sulfides to oxides or chlorides and the oxidation of metals. Gas-solid reactions consist of at least two kinds of steps; one involves the transport of reactant and product to and from the reaction zone and the other is the chemical reaction taking place at the interphase boundaries. In the limiting cases one or the other of the above mentioned steps will be much slower than the other and is then rate controlling. For example, the oxidation of metals is diffusion controlled and obeys the parabolic law.' On the other hand, if the diffusion rate is much larger than the chemical reaction rate then it will be controlled by the chemical reaction rate. This latter case occurs for the reduction of iron oxides studied by McKewan. If the rate of diffusion and of the chemical reaction have the same order of magnitude, a more detailed analysis is necessary. Thus at the beginning of the reaction when the solid and gaseous reactants are in direct contact, the reaction should be chemical reaction rate controlled as no diffusion process is involved. At the other extreme as the reaction zone moves further into the solid, the diffusion distance becomes greater and the diffusion rate continuously decreases. Eventually, therefore, for a sufficiently large sample the rate must become diffusion controlled. As the transition from one controlling step to the other must be continuous, we cannot describe this transition period by either of the two limiting cases. In this paper the author attempts to derive a general rate equation for gas-solid reaction systems. This is effected by considering the rates of diffusion and chemical reaction simultaneously from the state of pure diffusion control to pure chemical reaction control. I) DERIVATION The system under consideration is made of at least three phases, namely the gaseous one, the solid reactant, and the solid product as shown in Fig. 1. The notations are listed at the end of the paper. The mass transfer process involves the diffusion of reactants and products across the solid product layer. It is reasonable to consider that no chemical reaction will take place in the solid product layer with respect to both gaseous reactant and product. For the characteristics of local equilibrium of the system, the diffusion process is really in a quasi-steady-state. It will be proved in the following paragraphs. Then we can invoke the law of conservation of mass valid for all chemical species passing through the layer. This paper traces the history and performance of a coal degasification project in the Black Warrior Basin of Central Alabama. The primary coal beds being degasified are the Mary Lee and Blue Creek. The area being developed for gas production is also scheduled for underground mining in two to seven years. The paper discusses the early data collection and evaluation. The coals are extremely gassy with some measurements in excess of 500 SCF/ton. Five experimental wells were drilled and produced. Geologic heterogeneities were encountered which affect the performance of the project. Drilling and completion practices together with well design considerations compatible with under- ground mining are discussed. Finally, the gas gathering and sales system together with the early production history is illustrated.

Kolar Gold Fields are one of the best known gold deposits in South India where gold occurs in quartz reefs in Archaean hornblende schists and shows large variation in grade. The history of mining goes back to 18th century. The workings at Nundydroog Mines, chosen for Operations Research studies, have entered a depth of 2150 meters. The gold values in these mines were thought to be erratically distributed. However, by using 10540 samples from 49 blocks of ore, it is established that the gold value properties in inch- pennyweight units follow a two parameter log-normal distribution. Emperical relationships between arithmetic means and estimates based on peripheral and internal block values have been worked out using the estimator suggested by Krige (1951) instead of 't' estimator suggested by Sichel (1952). These relations can be used in arriving at block estimates with respective standard errors. There is no significant emperical relationship between depth and the grade of ore.

The total oil production from Colombia during 1939 amounted to 23,774,151 bbl., constituting a new high record. Of this amount the Tropical Oil Co. produced 22,374,151 bbl. from its De Mares concession and the Colombian Petroleum Co. produced 1,400,000 bbl. from its Barco concession beyond the eastern Andes. The Socony Vacuum Oil Co. produced a small amount of crude from its Las Monas wells north of the Sogamoso River in the Magdalena Valley for consumption on its own property, but this is not included in the figures given above. The South American Gulf Oil Co. provided the outstanding development in the country by the completion, late in the year, of its 12-in. pipe line from the Colombian Petroleum Company's Barco concession to the coast at Covenas. This was a notable accomplishment, achieved in the face of tremendous natural obstacles. With the completion of this line there are now two crude-oil outlets from the interior of Colombia to the coast, the other being the Andian National Corporation's line down the Magdalena Valley from Barranca Bermeja. The Barco property becomes the second major producing area in Colombia. The acquisition of prospectivc oil lands continued at about the same level as during the prcvious year. Most of the lands taken up or applied for had their subsurface rights vested in the National Government. Relatively little interest was taken in the leasing of privately owned lands. Tropical surrendered its Putana concession on the Sogamoso River after finding it to he nonproductive. The status of applications for National lands that had been accepbed or on which concession contracts had been awarded at the end of the year is shown in Table 3. In the Magdalena Valley wildcat drilling in the search of new fields was conducted to the east of Puerto Berrio by the Compania de Petroleo Shell de Colombia, Compania Coloinbiaila de Petroleos El Condor and by the Sociedad Nacional del Carare; further down the valley to the cast of Puerto Wilches, the Socony T'acuum was drilling two wildcats. In a low and gently sloping ridge extending some 1500 ft. southward from Squaw Mt., and now.covered by the buildings, or crossed by the railroads and streets, of a portion of the city of Victor, there is an ancient volcanic vent or crater, which exhibits one of the most interesting phenomena of the great upheaval and volcanic disturbance that built up the hills of the famous Cripple Creek gold-field—of the period when mass was piled on mass to form the mountains and foothills; when fissures and craters opened, and lavas, welling up, overflowed the surface, until, finally cooling, they effectually choked their vents, thus forming many of the ridges that stand out in bold relief, and the dikes that seam the Continent. This particular occurrence, though limited in dimensions, shows in miniature certain stages of the eruptions of Etna and Vesuvius,* Kilauea and Loa; and illustrates what was (with the exception of the penetrating dikes) the closing chapter of the early volcanoes whose emanations have contributed to the

THE Ducktown district is in the extreme southeastern corner of Tennessee, its principal railroad point being Copperhill, on the Blue Ridge division of the Louisville &Nashville Railroad, midway between Knoxville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga. The ore deposits were discovered about 1849 and development work was begun in the early fifties. Only the "black copper? ores, products of secondary enrichment, from beneath the gossan outcrops and overlying the massive sulphide deposits, were then mined and smelted for their copper content. Upon their exhaustion, attention was directed to the treatment of the pyritic ore remaining, resulting in the devising of a, process consisting of open-heap roasting, followed by blast-furnace smelting, which was practised until 1903, when semi-pyritic smelting was-adopted. In 1908, the companies operating in the district; on account of litigation brought about by alleged smoke damage to forests and vegetation in the adjoining counties of Georgia, were compelled to erect enormous acid plants to prevent the escape of the sulphur dioxide produced in the smelting operations. The utilization of this sulphur dioxide in the, manufacture of sulphuric acid as a byproduct has added to the revenues of the companies, and at the same time has furnished a valuable source of supply of sulphuric acid to the fertilizer trade of the South, and more recently to the manufacturers of explosives for use in the production of war munitions. The steadily increasing demand for sulphuric acid for the manufacture of fertilizers and explosives, together with the decreasing imports of pyrites, from which the acid is generally produced, now makes it imperative that greatly extended resources of pyrite be developed. While the Ducktown deposits do not predominate in pyrite, they do contain an inexhaustible supply of pyrrhotite, admixed with pyrite, which can be satisfactorily employed to supplement or substitute for pyrite in acid making.

"In 1899 the American Refining and Smelting Company obtained control of the East Helena Smelter, and have added improvements from time to time.The plant is four miles east of Helena, on the Northern Pacific and Great Northern railroads, with hourly street car service from Helena.Electric power is obtained from Canyon Ferry dam, twelve miles east on the Missouri river, and about 800 h-p. is used in the blowing engines, crushing machinery, cranes and locomotives.Besides the Montana ores convenient to the above railroads, a large part of the ore supply comes from the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, and is mainly lead ore and concentrates.A modern automatic sampling mill, with Vezin samplers and a capacity of 50 tons per hour, was completed in 1912.Three blast furnaces, each 48 inches by 136 inches, are now in continuous operation, and the monthly production of silver-lead bullion is six thousand tons.A part of the ore roasting is done in Godfrey furnaces, in connection with the Huntington-Heberlein process, 12 pots being in use, with a capacity of 300 tons per day.Four Dwight-Lloyd sintering furnaces, each 42 inches by 264 inches, and a smaller experimental machine, with a combined capacity of 440 tons per day, are in steady operation, and are successfully roasting ore as well as sintering flue dust. These machines are in great favor and results are being carefully watched.Three bag houses are used in connection with the 1,800 brick flue chamber, and each bag house contains 1,260 cotton bags, each 18 inches in diameter by 30 feet long, suspended on vertical roads. The product saved by the bags contains about 50 per cent lead and is retreated in the blast furnace after sintering.About 450 men are employed."

The magnetic reflux classifier, which utilizes the combined effects of magnetic fields and a hindered settling classifier, is a new tool for determining the quantity and quality of middlings in fine-sized magnetite concentrates. Results are given for processing a typical taconite ore, and a sketch of the apparatus is included. IN examining magnetite ores and beneficiated products it often becomes necessary to make critical studies of the amount of grinding necessary to produce the desired degree of magnetite liberation. In the past this has been accomplished by laboratory heavy-liquid tests, which provide a method for selectively removing middling particles and free magnetite from various-sized fractions. Examination of the various products under the microscope results in fairly accurate determination of the degree of liberation. The method is quite efficient on sizes coarser than 325 mesh. Thus the heavy-liquid method of middling separation was satisfactory until the advent of present day magnetic taconite studies. When magnetite concentrates ranging from 70 to 100 pct —325 mesh are studied it becomes apparent that older methods of determining liberation size are not satisfactory and that there is need for a new method. For example, some of the low-grade magnetite ores of the Wisconsin and Michigan iron ranges require grinding to 100 pct —325 mesh to produce a magnetic concentrate containing less than 12 pct silica. Examination of concentrates from such ores often reveals that many of the middling particles consist of only very minor proportions of iron mineral. Thus it becomes important to be able to determine the degree of grinding necessary not only for complete liberation, but also for liberation of only 80, 85, or 90 pct of the total iron mineral content. Actually, complete liberation is never attained, but is often used to designate that degree of liberation necessary for production of high-grade concentrates. A rougher concentrate, produced after elimination of a coarse-sized tailing, can usually be subjected to a second grinding stage and concentrated into a higher grade product than could be produced from the same crude ore with one stage of grinding resulting in the same overall size reduction. This fact adds to the importance of being able to determine partial degrees of liberation on any magnetite ore. Standard laboratory methods such as heavy-liquid separation, microscopic grain counts, Davis tube magnetic separation, magnetic flocculation, classification, flotation, and others often are not applicable, or are prohibitive because of time requirements when large numbers of fine-sized magnetite samples are investigated. The Davis tube magnetic separator is an efficient tool to use in rejecting the non-magnetic mineral particles from an ore sample. The middlings discarded by the tube separator usually are so low in iron content that they can be considered relatively unimportant in liberation studies. This condition is caused by the extremely high flux density used in the Davis tube. This flux density ranges from four to eight times the flux density produced by most of the powerful commercial machines in use today. Thus the problem resolves itself into a search for a method of selectively removing middlings from Davis tube magnetic concentrates which will be both rapid and efficient. Those methods showing most promise in the development of a process for isolating middlings from extremely fine-sized magnetic concentrates were flotation and magnetic flocculation. The use of flotation to remove middlings from magnetic concentrates is reported in the literature.'.' The flotation process is effective in removing middlings from a magnetite concentrate, but physical entrapment of fine-sized free magnetite in the silica-bearing froth is an undesirable feature. The flotation method of removing middlings requires time, effort, and precise control of many variables, and does not meet the required degree of middling isolation. Magnetic Flocculation Magnetic flocculation has long been resorted to"-" in efforts to upgrade magnetite concentrates. One of the new magnetic taconite plants now under construction on the Mesabi Range includes magnetic flocculation in the flowsheet' as an accessory process to remove high-silica middlings and free silica which has been mechanically entrapped in magnetite flocs. The use of magnetic flocculation as a laboratory method of making precise separation of middlings was further investigated, since it offered a rapid, simple method of accomplishing the desired result. Magnetic flocculation involves the subjection of a magnetic concentrate to a strong magnetic field, passing the concentrate in a highly flocculated condition to a hydroseparator or other classifiers of various types, and removing free silica and middlings as overflow products. The new OSM regulations for ground water monitoring of underground coal mines have been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level, but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion still exists within the industry as to what is really required. Based on submission and/or approval of more than 30 monitoring plans for existing mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, three basic sections are necessary. They are: 1. background data on the hydrogeologic setting of the mine, 2. the monitoring plan itself, and 3. mining procedures to minimize adverse effects on ground water. Like all of the OSM requirements, ground water monitoring will be a new burden the coal industry must bear, but with proper planning and communication with the regulatory authorities it need not be as bad as originally feared.

What more appropriate backdrop for the August 17-18 field hearings of Senator Frank E. Moss (D-Utah). His subcommittee, on Minerals. Materials and Fuels, heard 37 witnesses ponder the value of minerals vs esthetics or other uses of federal lands. On August 17, four Army Hueys swept the senatorial party, the press, Forest Service Officers and such distinguished witnesses as Montana Governor Forrest H. Anderson over the Custer-Gallatin National Forests, besting the thin air of 10,000 ft p1us, they set down on Iron Plateau.

No devclopment of major importance has been made in the south central fault-line district of Texas during 1939. Four new fields have been discovcred, all of which appear to be of minor importance, with small wells in the Navarro sand, the Taylor marl or the Austin chalk. Drilling along the fault line has not developed any new prospects in the Edwards lime, the most prolific producing horizon of the district. At the close of the year, a few deep tests for lower producing horizons have been projected and should prove to be of interest, and plans are under way for further development of the Pearsall field, which has been under the control of a single company until recently. Production from the 46 producing fields was maintained at 8,460,000 bbl. for the year, a decrease of approximately 400,000 bbl. under 1938. This decrease is due in part to natural decline of production and in part to decreased allowed production. Approximately 55 producing wells were completed on proven acreage in the Darst Creek and Salt Flat fields. No new lease plays were made during the year, although approximately the same amount of land, 600,000 acres, remained under lease during the year. Some geophysical operations of various types were carried on along the fault-line area itself and also in the Edwards plateau and in the area south and southeast of the main fault line.
