RECENTLY, we were asked to name the greatest contribution to progress in mining technology during the past 25 years. Immediately, the introduction of the pneumatic hammer for making blastholes came to mind because it can be credited with speeding the excavation of rock and the elimination of hand drilling. Possibly this answer was so spontaneous because we were working on this "drilling issue" Of MINING ENGINEERING. Present drilling tools have devel¬oped so rapidly, that a great deal of engineering is. required in the selection of bits, steel, and machines for the drilling conditions at each mine. Formerly a modicum of engineering was utilized in selection of equipment for it was purchased from manufacturer preference. With the development of alloy drill steels, tungsten-carbide bits, throwaway bits, and the jackleg drill, mining companies began doing more experimental work before making selections. It is unfortunately true, that each operator must begin at the beginning by doing his own test work before choosing his drilling method, and tools. Some of this work has been done very well-under controlled conditions and obtaining proper data on the variables. Such data should be accumulated from the various mines, tabulated, and published. Such a volume would be of tremendous help to the small operator in selecting equipment and would permit the research departments of the larger companies to formulate some measure of rock drillability and to undertake more specialized research on the different phases of drilling.

PONDERING the action of a ball mill employed to carry on comminution from the product of fine crushing to the point where flotation, cyanidation or other concentrating methods are applicable, one wonders where this machine had its origin. When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reiterated the observation of that older poet Von Logau, and wrote “Tho’ the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small," he probably visualized the type of mill that was employed in medieval times for the production of flour, and can therefore not be considered as having gained admittance to the fraternity of millmen, on behalf of, either poet. He does, however, make it quite clear that the efficiency of even these Mills of Destiny was low, and to that extent voices a characteristic of fine-grinding equipment that has been the bugbear of all metallurgical engineers. PRINCIPLE OF BALL MILL The principle of the ball mill probably is traceable to the action along the coast line of oceans or lakes, or in the mountain streams. Wave action on rocks and pebbles, close to the shore line, gives the potential energy to the grinding media, which, in their rolling and tossing, break down the sands, and the resultant "pulp" carried out from the shore is classified and settles out in sizes ranging downward to extremely fine mesh. Surely, these are the real mills of God. If we allow our minds to dwell on the total tonnage that has been handled in this way, adding to the sands and clays at present in existence those enormous tonnages of metamorphosed sedimentaries, we sense the vast quantity of rock that has been so reduced. Is it not likely, therefore, that the answer to the beginnings of pebble milling, and eventually ball milling, came through the perception of this natural mill by one of our engineering forebears? METHODS OF GRINDING The relatively low return of mechanical input to a ball mill, in terms of useful work accomplished, has always intrigued me immensely. The potential energy absorbed by a ball raised to a high point in its path is apparently released with a very small return in useful work. Is the ball mill the most desirable means of fine grinding, or is there some other method through which we can recover a reasonable amount of the energy input in terms of useful work? Some years ago, on his retirement, H. W. Hardinge was questioned as to his thoughts on the trend of fine-grinding equipment. As I recall, his prophecy at that time was that the most likely field for improvement in grinding media would be toward a charge of flat disks with some mechanical scheme to cause them to slide over each other. Undoubtedly, Mr. Hardinge went through the usual experience of the muller and bucking board, the customary introduction of the budding millman to his calling. PLANS are underway for the annual meeting of AIME, to be held in New York, February 17 to 21. The technical program includes meetings of all divisions of all three branches, Mining, Metals, and Petroleum. The bulk of the technical sessions will be held at the Statler Hotel, and the annual banquet will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria, Wednesday evening, February 20. The technical program of the Mining Branch activities is included in this issue. While it is not complete in every detail, it shows general interest groupings as well as subjects to be discussed. The program for each division is shown separately to facilitate following the activities of these special interest groups. Then, after a full scale and possibly somewhat strenuous technical meeting, a post-meeting feature will appeal to many of the members. A restful cruise to Bermuda and Nassau is offered at special rates to AIME members and friends. The schedule is a 3:00 pm departure from New York on the Queen of Bermuda on Saturday, February 23; arrival at Bermuda at 7:00 am Monday, February 25; arrival at Nassau at noon, Wednesday, February 27; and the trip ending again in New York at 9:00 am, Saturday, March 1. Rates begin at $202.10 per person, with higher rates depending upon accomodations desired. The base rate includes outside room with private bath and all meals, as well as Federal, Bermuda and Nassau taxes. Reservations for the trip should be made immediately through Leon V. The Zistersdorf field, near Vienna, continues to be Austria's only producing area. During the year the field was slightly extended by Rohol Gewinnungs A.G. in its Rag 2, which in April came in for an initial 120 tons daily through an 8-mm. (0.315-in.) bean, from the twelfth Sarmat sand at 1447 m. (4747 ft.). The amount of fluid produced by this well has remained essentially constant, but after the first several months water appeared and increased to some 50 per cent of the total. TWO subsequent extension wells, Rag 3 and Rag 5, northeast and west of Rag 2, found only water-bearing sands, and drilled through the main fault and into the Flysch at 1683 and 1401 m. (5522 and 4596 ft.), respectively. At the close of the year preparations were under way to deviate both wells away from the fault to test still deeper sands. Within the previously proven area of the field Erdolproduction's Gosting VII came in flowing a maximum of 440 tons daily, the highest individual production yet recorded. This company's Gosting VIII also yielded an initial production of 20 tons daily, and its Gosting XI, drilling

SINCE the first applications of cyanidation to silver ores about 1906, treatment of ores in the Pachuca district has been entirely by straight cyanidation. Until about the year 1921, Real del Monte removed a sulphide concentrate (largely pyrite) by tabling in the cyanidation grinding circuit. The ores milled prior to the year 1935 were dry ores, ideal for cyanidation, and yielded 90 pct of the silver and 92 pct of the gold. Since 1934 there has been a notable increase in the refractivity to cyanidation of the average ores received by the mill. Tonnages of the former amenable ores have gradually been replaced by tonnages of more refractory ones, so that present average recoveries have fallen to 83 pct of the silver and 90 pct of the gold. During this period there has also been an increase in the content of base metal sulphides' in many of the ores although this increase is not always directly related to the increased refractivity. Since March 1950, the Cia. de Real del Monte has been developing a flotation treatment for some-of its ores before cyanidation. Suitability for flotation is judged not only by the base metal content, but also by the amount of additional recovery of silver and gold made possible by the combined treatment. Selection and segregation of ores most suitable for flotation before cyanidation is a difficult problem for the mines, and the best that can be done is a compromise that leaves much to be desired. Development of Pre-cyanidation Flotation at Real del Monte Much laboratory work has been done on flotation of ores from the Pachuca district, however, the data could not supply reliable information on the many factors connected with the economics of low-base metal-high silver ores. Pilot plant operations would be required. Pilot plant facilities were made available in March 1950, when it became necessary to close down Loreto's 100 ton per day selective flotation plant because of exhausted ore supply. The results of the 100-ton pilot plant tests indicated that a large part of our tonnage of cyanidation ores could be profitably treated by flotation, and a tonnage of 1100 tons per day was selected as the maximum tonnage of ore that the mines were likely to deliver, and because this tonnage fitted with the grinding capacity of this circuit. Equipment was ordered for the production of a single flotation concentrate. The conception of flotation before cyanidation, at that time, was the production of a single concentrate to be shipped to the lead smelter. The 100-ton pilot plant was immediately increased to 350 tons by installing additional flotation cells.. This. plant was operated continuously until the 1100ton plant was put in operation in January 1951. In July 1950, an increase in the quotation for zinc called for an investigation- of the possibilities of producing a zinc concentrate, and laboratory tests on the tailings from the 350-ton plant indicated that a

Within the Northern Pennine Orefield, England, intersections of fluorite veins are generally richest in ore, and their recognition enables investigation of the ore potential of the intersecting bodies. A method, based on routine analysis of fluorite for yttrium, has been used with success in mines of the district to predict the location of intersections in partially developed fluorite-bearing ore bodies. This short note is intended as a brief introduction; the details of United Kingdom applications are to be published at a later date. Geology The Northern Pennine Orefield is the second largest fluorspar-producing region in Britain. The associated minerals galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, barite, and witherite have all been extensively worked in the past but, with the exception of a single barytes mine, all of these operations are now abandoned. Galena alone is recovered as a byproduct of fluorspar beneficiation. At the present time two companies are producing about 38,000 tpy of fluorspar from high grade vein ore bodies, and a number of concerns are actively prospecting in old lead workings. The mineralization is localized in veins and replacement flats within favorable lithologies in an alternating limestone, sandstone, shale sequence. Since the thickness of individual beds is not great (generally less than 20 m), vein bodies tend to be ribbon-shaped, with length greatly exceeding width and height (Dunham). They thus present difficult exploration targets for conventional diamond drilling techniques. Ore grade varies greatly along the veins, which can change rapidly in character from mineral stained fault gouge to massive mineral bodies up to 10 m in width. It has been known for a very long time that the richer ore bodies tend to be associated with vein intersections in favorable beds. It is assumed that vein fissure intersections provided vertical channelways through which hot ore-bearing brines were able to ascend from deeper cavities in the sequence. Thus investigation of intersections at other horizons generally yields further ore bodies. Technique The relative concentration of yttrium in fluorite is a good indicator, in the North Pennines, of the direction of flow of mineralizing fluids. In all of the ore bodies so far studied in detail in this region, the concentration of yttrium increases markedly in the direction of vein intersections that are believed to have acted as feeder zones to the remainder of the bodies. The reason for this relationship is probably connected with the degradation of soluble rare earths-fluoride complexes by the changes in various physicochemical parameters of the hydrothermal fluids as they entered the ore body cavities from the feeder zones. The simultaneous release of free fluoride ions also contributed to the increased ore values in these intersection zones. Yttrium values in fluorite taken from a longitudinal traverse of the western ore body, Redburn mine, Rookhope, are plotted in [Fig. 1.] The position of a major vein branch and three cross veins are clearly indicated by yttrium maxima. The cross veins themselves contain up to 2.5 m of low grade fluorspar ore. The exact positions of B and C were unknown previous to the geochemical survey. Similar results have been obtained for several other veins and ore bodies in the area. Clean fluorspar was collected as bulk samples from within 300 mm of the vein wall and, since the vein infilling is simple, with mineral growth from the walls inward, analyses of the samples are considered comparable along the length of the ore body. The Joint Session on Continuous Casting, of the Institute of Metals Division and the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, convened in the Jade Room of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, on Feb. 23, 1944, at 9:15 o'clock, Carl E. Swartz presiding. C. E. SWartz.—It is gratifying to see so many out at what may seem an early hour for the beginning of A.I.M.E. sessions, but I think this number-—some fifty or sixty of you —is an adequate expression of the interest in these processes all over the United States, and possibly in foreign countries. I would like to ask those who feel that this type of program is of value to you to write or speak to some one of the Institute of Metals Division officers and suggest other topics for symposiums. We have a feeling that some of these current practices are of interest and we believe that under proper sponsorship many of the companies mill be willing to give publicity to processes such as those that will be discussed today. Also, we would like suggestions and criticisms, so that the next ones can be better. The subject of continuous casting is not new, of course. The two papers on the program this morning will adequately cover the history and some of the earlier processes, some of the theory and some of the practice, some of the reasons why these various methods did not work. I was rather interested in discovering, when thumbing through one of the A.I.M.E. publications tile other night, an article on continuous casting. I was not aware that the A.I.M.E. had published any papers on continuous casting, but there may be a number. The one that I happened to find was published in the 1915 volume, on the Mellen rod-casting process, and so we might say this is not the first session in which these subjects have been under discussion. However, there have been many improvements since then in all fields of metallurgical and mechanical engineering; consequently, I think that the papers today will be a little more involved and a little more complete in their technique. The first paper today will be given by one of our gentlemen of the press, who has done one of the outstanding jobs in this country in calling to our attention some of the newer processes that are being considered and being used in the metallurgical indus-

Water supplies dependent upon induced infiltration can be developed by vertical wells, by infiltration galleries, or by horizontal water collectors. Each method is described and the advantages of water obtained by induced infiltration with respect to cost, chemical quality, and temperature are shown by specific water supplies. THE subject of ground water in industry is assuming increasing importance as new processes and new industries are developed. Industrial specifications of chemical quality and temperature for process water and for cooling purposes are becoming more rigid, and water must now have many properties to meet these requirements. As ground water is usually more constant in quality and temperature, many industries are turning to ground-water supplies to satisfy their growing need. As many published articles have stated during the past several years, the ever increasing demands have caused shortages of water supply in many localities throughout the United States. Although such shortages are generally of a local nature, they have given rise to many attendant problems, such as increased pumping costs, salt water encroachment, and rising ground-water temperatures. One partial solution to the problems of overdevelopment of the ground-water reservoirs in many areas can be accomplished by developing ground-water supplies that are dependent upon induced infiltration and by planning the use of underground reservoirs. These reservoirs can be filled during periods of excess precipitation and stream flow and can be emptied during periods of drought, in a manner similar to the use of surface reservoirs. In this way water that otherwise would be wasted into the oceans is salvaged during periods of excess. The development of water supplies dependent on induced infiltration is a relatively new concept and should be defined. When a well is pumped, the water level around the well is lowered in the shape of an inverted cone or cone of depression. As pumping is continued, the cone of depression will continue to expand, horizontally and vertically, until the quantity of water crossing the perimeter of the cone plus the recharge within the area of the cone is equal to the quantity of water being pumped.

I BELIEVE that my work would surely be host a seed without fit and that I would fail in that cause which disposed me to satisfy your request to write and form this work [75] if while laboring on it I did not tell you of the art of casting, since it is a necessary means to very many ends. I realize even more that I must tell as much as seems necessary since I have already demonstrated the methods of recognizing the natures and locations of the metals, of smelting and reducing them to their ultimate perfection, and finally have taught you to make their associations and alloys. It is especially necessary since this art and work is not well known, so that no one can practice it who is not, so to speak, born to it, or who does not have much talent and good judgment. For this reason and also because it is closely related to sculpture, whose arms are the support of its life, it is very highly esteemed. In order to describe the whole art in every part, I say that the greatest labors of both mind and body are required for its operations in the beginning, middle, and end. It is indeed true that these labors are endured with pleasure because they are associated with a certain expectation of novelty, produced by the greatness of art and awaited with desire, particularly since the artificer sees that it is an art pleasing and delightful even to ignorant men. As a result, as if ensnared, he is often unable to leave the place of work. To conclude: The outcome of this art is dependent upon and subject to many operations which, if they are not all carried out with great care and diligence and well observed throughout, convert the whole into nothing, and the result becomes like its name [cast away]. Therefore, having considered this work many times, with its extraordinary obstacles and the bodily labors heavy as a stevedore's, instead of exalting it with praise, I wish to say that it is such that a man of noble birth, even though he be gifted or be drawn to it by pleasure, should not practice it and could not unless he is accustomed to the sweat and many discomforts which it brings. SME-AIME's Planning Committee established Working Party No. 22 in September 1974. Its charge was to: "Determine and take necessary actions to have Mining Engineering included among the disciplines on the National Professional Engineering Examinations." The first national examinations in "Mining/Minerals Engineering" will be given during April 1979, in states that request questions from the National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE), Seneca, S.C. From a survey by NCEE, mining engineering is recognized as a specialty in professional engineering registration in 25 states. In addition, 19 states give examinations in mining engineering. At press time, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia have indicated they will use the April 1979 exam.

A special meeting of the Board of Directors was held on July 25, 1916, pursuant to notice duly given according to the By-Laws. This special meeting was for the purpose of giving authority for the signing of a contract with the American Society of Civil Engineers, as mentioned in another place in this Bulletin. The interest in the matter is indicated by the attendance of 11 members of the Board, some of whom came from a long distance. An invitation was received from the St. Louis Section of the Institute and from members in and near St. Louis to hold the 115th Meeting of the Institute in and near St. Louis in late September or early October, 1917. This invitation was accepted. Announcement was made that the Mexican Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had been dissolved and reorganized as the Mexican Section of the Institute.

IN metallurgical problems involving the study of equilibrium in binary systems, the ,existence of an additional vapor phase, due to the presence of a volatile component in the alloy, has often been neglected. This is well indicated by the modified form of the phase rule, usually accepted in condensed systems in which pressure is not considered as a degree of freedom. In many cases the vapor pressure of the volatile component is exceedingly small and for all purposes can be considered negligible, in which case this form of the phase rule is applicable. However, alloys containing Hg, Cd, Zn, or Mg, tend to show very marked equilibrium vapor pressure, even in the solid state, and therefore present cases where the modified form of the phase rule no longer holds true. A quantitative determination of the vapor pressure of zinc in alpha brasses is not only of practical interest because of the loss of zinc in the processing of these alloys, but also of theoretical interest in that such measurements provide a means of applying the principles of theoretical physics and physical chemistry to problems of applied metallurgy. A number of investigators have reported vapor pressure measurements of zinc in alpha brasses. Hargreaves1 made extensive measurements which were used by Birchenall and Mehl² and Guttman³ for the determination of activity coefficients of zinc in alpha brasses. Hargreaves1 used a differentially heated quartz tube and measured the condensation temperature at one end corresponding to the temperature of the heated brass at the other end. Birchenall and Cheng outlined the condensation method of obtaining vapor pressure of zinc and Cd over some of their silver alloys." The primary object of the present investigation was to increase the range and accuracy of the vapor pressure data for the alpha brasses. Preparation of Alloys: Six alloys were prepared from Bunkerhill zinc and O.F.H.C. copper, both of 99.99 pct purity. The cast ingots were annealed for 24 hr at 550°C, scalped, cold rolled 40 pct and annealed for 50 hr at 550°C. The annealed bars were then surface ground and degasified for 30 min at approximately 550°C in an induction heated vacuum furnace. The surface of the bars was removed before milling the bars into relatively fine chips for chemical analysis and samples for the equilibrium cell. The analyses of the six alloys are given in table I. Experimental Method: The vapor pressure of zinc over the various alloys at a number of temperatures was determined from absorption spectra data. The spark source was produced by means of a high tension discharge between two electrodes of pure zinc. The design of the absorption vessel is shown in fig. 1. The vessel was constructed of transparent quartz which transmits the whole of the visible spectrum and the ultraviolet down to a wave length of 2000 A. The thickness of the vapor space was set at 0.8 mm so as to permit a relatively wide range of measurements without altering the vapor space, and thereby necessitating recalibration of the vessel. The furnace used for heating the absorption vessel consisted of a split wound furnace as shown in fig. 2. The spectrograph used in obtaining the transmitted zinc spectra was a double prism type especially designed for a region of 2500-3500 A. A step diaphragm used in conjunction with a tungsten filament provided the necessary intensity patterns required for calibration of the photographic plates.

The following data concerning the general dimensions and district-location of the blast-furnaces of the United States are intended to supplement a paper of similar title, which appears in volume xiv., pages 561 to 577, of the Transactions, and bring the record to the end of the calendar year 1886. The reasons for presenting the figures at so short an interval since the former paper are that the American Iron and Steel Association has lately issued a new directory of iron and steel works (edition of 1886) from which many of the plants which have been inactive are omitted and new industries added, to such an extent as to materially affect the figures presented in the first paper; and also that the improvement in business has encouraged a production of pig-iron in 1886 in excess of any previous outputs, and the results obtained in the industry at large as well as at individual plants form a better index of what the American furnaces can accomplish than those heretofore presented. The statement will not be extended beyond the production of pigiron, although it could well be made to include the manufactured iron and steel; and while the data given have been verified as far as possible up to the close of the year 1886, no attempt, except in special cases, has been made to note the changes which have taken place since that time—changes which within the next twelvemouth will affect some of the figures here presented. At the close of the year 1886 there were 579 blast-furnaces reported on the active list—an apparent decrease, as compared with my former paper, of 97 stacks; but this was not an actual decrease, since most of the furnaces dropped from the Directory were those which, owing to location, inefficient equipment, or fake of ore-supplies, etc., were considered likely to remain inactive, although a number of them will possibly be temporarily put into blast with iron advancing in price. In situ mining techniques have become prominent in recent years due to declining ore grades, rising costs, and increasing concern for miners' health and safety. Current practices depend heavily on the effective and uniform fragmentation of the ore zone of interest, which not only provides for proper media flow but also exposes additional surface areas to react with the processing system. Specifically, current applications have focused on blasting to a mined-out opening or, in the case of shallow de- posits, blasting to the surface void. In the former case, several obstacles are encountered, including proper initiation, uniform fragmentation, and a lack of swell space for the blast, which tend to produce less desirable results in the zone of' interest.

THERMODYNAMIC properties of many high-temperature systems containing sulfur, such as slags, metal sulfides, and solutions of sulfur in liquid metals, have been studied by means of equilibration with known gas mixtures.'" This method presupposes a complete and accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic data for all possible components of the gas phase at high temperatures. However, a survey of the data available up to 1952 on the thermodynamics of gaseous sulfur species and compounds, by Richardson and Jeffes,' showed that there was considerable uncertainty in the values of the free energies of formation of S, SO, HS, and CS. In many cases, this uncertainty made it impossible to decide whether or not these species would form a significant proportion of the sulfur present in the gas phase in any given system. After the review by Richardson and Jeffes had been published, St. Pierre and Chipman6 measured, by an indirect method, the free energy of formation of SO. This also enabled a clear choice to be made among the three possible spectroscopic values for the dissociation energy of S2 into atoms10 thereby determining the free energy of formation of S from S2, and fixing the free energy of formation of HS more accurately" The main purpose of the present investigation was to measure the free energy of formation of CS, which was still in considerable doubt. For example, at 1600°C, it could be estimated to be +6 +25 kcal per mole,* most of the uncertainty being in the * Based on the dissociation energles of CS6 and S2,5 the heat of sublimation of graphite, and, the assumption that the entropy of formation of CS is the same as that of CO. value of the dissociation energy." A secondary purpose of the investigation was to determine more accurately the equilibrium sulfur pressures over dilute solutions of sulfur in carbon-saturated liquid iron. The western coal industry, long overshadowed by the petroleum and metallic minerals industries, has been revitalized by several new coal mining operations, with the promise that this is only the beginning of a tremendous surge in production of coal that will carry into the next century. The content of this paper is confined to the coal fields and recent developments in eastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming and western North Dakota. The area is commonly referred to as the Powder River-Fort Union region although the Powder River Basin and the Fort Union formation are separate entities and are not coextensive. Coincidentally or otherwise, the extent of the subbituminous part of the coal region coincides approximately with the Powder River Basin. Environmental considerations together with the low sulfur content of much of the western coal have triggered demand since this coal could not compete at present with eastern and midwestern coal solely on a delivered-cost-per-million-btu basis. However, increasing costs of underground mining and the comparatively thin seams of the eastern and midwestern deposits may soon bring a balance to these costs regardless of the sulfur content. Another factor which has made western coal competitive at this time is the use of the unit-trains to significantly reduce the cost of transportation. Fast loading and unloading facilities and trains of 100 cars or more in turn-around service are the keys to success in this effort.

SHIOU-CHUAN SUN (author's reply).-Thanks are extended to Professor Hassialis for his recognition of the usefulness of a new tool, the cataphoretic cell, as an adjunct to the bubble machine and the abstraction test. His questions concerning adsorption, dielectric constant, floatability, activation, and depression are interesting and worthy of discussion. I According to Mueller,28 it is questionable that any of the present formulas gives absolute values of zeta potentials which are completely accurate. The problem is further complicated by the question" of whether the "dielectric constant" has any meaning at all for such a microscopically thin layer. With these in mind, the results in this paper should be considered in the relative sense as a first approximation and not as absolute quantities. Adsorption Referring to item a of Fig. 8, the dielectric constant and the viscosity of the xanthate solutions are the same for galena, sphalerite and quartz. If dielectric constant and viscosity (but not the adsorption) were the first-order variable of the cataphoretic system, as claimed by Professor Hassialis, then the magnitudes of zeta coefficient of galena, spha)erite and quartz would have been similar to each other. These are not. The big difference of zeta coefficient of these three minerals in the same xanthate solutions is not altogether unjustified to be attributed to their difference in adsorption of xanthate ions. This is supported by the results of chemical abstraction tests reported by Ince.14 Again, the big difference of zeta coefficient between wollastonite, calcite, and fluorite in the same laurylamine hydrochloride solutions (p. 118, Figs. 58, 59, and 60 of ref. r5) also indicates that the cataphoretic system is not governed chiefly by the dielectric constant. Beside the data shown in Fig. 8, other experimental evidences15 which support the idea of correlation between adsorption and zeta coefficient are: (I) there is a qualitative parallelism between the zeta coefficient curve and the chemical abstraction curve of sphalerite in solutions of various concentrations of sodium cyanide, (2) there is a qualitative parallelism between the zeta coefficient curve and the chemical abstraction curve of sphalerite in solutions of constant concentration of copper sulphate at different pH values, and (3) there is a qualitative parallelism between zeta coefficient curve and chemical abstraction curve of quartz in solutions with constant concentration of barium chloride at different pH values. The above mentioned experimental results are generally in agreement with Gouy's double layer theory,1-5 and support this idea that the concentration and the kind of ions adsorbed at the mineral surface and in the adjacent surrounding liquid chiefly govern the electrokinetic phenomena. Dielectric constant and viscosity of the liquid medium may be of somewhat lesser importance. It follows that the correlation between the coefficient and adsorption as claimed in this paper is justified. Dielectric Constant The term "dielectric constant " was first introduced into the electrokinetic equations by Perrin.30 In a footnote of his publication he states that Holmheltz has forgotten to include the dielectric constant. The conversion of the moment29 to the zeta potential involves an additional difficulty and confusion not involved for the moment, namely, assigning a value to the dielectric coefficient. This is conventionally assumed to be constant and equal to the dielectric constant of the bulk liquid. 21 The published literature 10, 12 indicates that the values of dielectric constant for dilute chemical solutions have been assumed as those of pure water.
