Anders Richard Akerman entered the eternal rest on Feb. 23, 1922, after a long and distinguished career. All mining men in Sweden arc mourning him, because he was one of their greatest and a leader in the scientific metallurgy of the iron. He was born April 18, 1837, in Stockholm, where his father, Joachim Akerman, was a professor at the Technical University, but the greater part of his childhood was spent in Falun, where the family moved after his father was made principal of the mining academy. He was at first taught by a tutor, but in 1851 entered the high school in Vesteras and the University of Uppsala in 1855, from which he graduated as a mining engineer on Dec. 11, 1860. A week later, he entered the service of the Department of Commerce and entered the mining academy at Falun, from which he graduated Dec. 15, 1862. The following May, he was accepted as a student in the metallurgical section of "Jernkontoret" (the "Iron Institute") and on Oct. 22, 1864, he was made an assistant in the same section. Thus begun the cooperation with the Iron Institute which was to continue for so many years and to bear such rich fruit. He had, however, previously received two requests from the Iron Institute: One to assist Prof. V. Eggertz in the preliminary work of preparing a handbook on blast-furnace practice, the other to make a complete index of the proceedings of the Iron Institute ("Jernkontorets Annaler") volumes 1817-1864, which index was published in 1866. On Oct. 19, 1865, Akerman was requested by "Jernkontoret" to give during 1866, lectures in the metallurgy of iron at the mining academy of Falun, as Prof. V. Eggertz wished to devote his entire time to the study of assaying. This request was renewed Oct. 15, 1867, for the year 1868, and on April 17, 1869, he was made instructor in metallurgy and mining at the Technical University, to which institution the higher education in mining engineering was transferred at that time. Akerman thus entered his career as a teacher, which lasted until the end of 1891. On May 11, 1877, he was appointed assistant professor in metallurgy and mining; on Sept. 7, 1883, he was appointed acting professor in the same department; and two weeks later was appointed dean of the mining college. On May 21, 1874, he was instructed by the Crown to inspect the mining schools in Filipstad and Falun. As a teacher, Akerman was very popular and his lectures were excellent, in form as well

IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. The success of many mineral dressing processes, including froth flotation and electrical concentration, depends largely on knowledge of physical and chemical structures of the mineral surfaces involved. As a general rule solids have surface layers, usually invisible by optical tests, that differ from the substratum. To the mineral engineer, therefore, a knowledge of the surface structures of minerals is of paramount importance. During the past decade one of the most powerful tools in the study of froth flotation mechanisms has been the use of radioactive tracers, but this technique usually cannot give definite information regarding the chemical changes that may or may not have occurred at the surface.

J. S. UNDER, Pittsburgh, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬In discussing Mr. Wysor's paper, I said that we were investigating the deposits around furnaces working on certain ferro alloys. Since the meeting, we have made a number of investigations, and have found that the deposits in the second and third passes of the hot-blast stoves, and near the stack at the boilers of furnaces working on spiegel and ferromanganese, contain about 15 per cent. total potash, of which 10 per cent. is water-soluble. The potash occurs mostly as potassium sulphate, a very small amount being present as potassium carbonate.

Electrical Conductivity. - The subject of the relative conducting power of different minerals is one of minor interest.* In general most minerals, except those having a metallic luster among the sulphides and oxides, are non-conductors. Only the non-conductors can show pyro-electrical phenomena, and only the conductors can give a thermo-electric current. 437. Frictional Electricity. - The development of an electrical charge on many bodies by friction is a familiar subject. All minerals become electric by friction, although the degree to which this is manifested differs widely. There is no line of distinction among minerals, dividing them into positively electric and negatively electric; for both electrical states may be presented by different varieties of the same species, and by the same variety in different states. The gems are in general positively electric only when polished; the diamond, however, exhibits positive electricity whether polished or not. AT THE beginning of October, the outstanding feature in the world's affairs was the Turkish question. The Turks, victorious over the Greeks, repudiated the treaty of Sévres with the Allies and demanded their reestablishment at Con-stantinople and in Thrace. The British resisted, but deserted by the French and Italians, at a military conference at Mudania the Turks obtained about everything that they wanted. Great Britain suffered a loss of prestige that may bear evil fruit in the future. The possession of the Dardanelles by the Turks pro-duced the ruin of Russia and Rumania in the great war, prolonged it two years and made it necessary for America to go in. Disruption of the entente puts the Turks back where they were. In America a strong and spontaneous reaction developed against this, not for any diplomatic reasons, but purely out of the sentiment that the atrocious Turks should be confined to Anatolia. Some strong leadership would have aligned the United States with Great Britain in this matter. As it is, the French have had their way but have alienated much of their American friendship. The temporary composition of Turkish affairs at the Mudania conference had momentous consequences. The Greeks, having expelled King Constantine, in their distress and despair reverted to the guidance of Venizelos. Evacuation of the Grecian military forces and the entire Grecian population from Eastern Thrace began, the people not venturing to remain there. From all accounts their withdrawal, attended by great hardships, was reminiscent of folk movements in the Middle Ages. The vanguard of the Angora Govern-ment set foot in Constantinople, marking the return of the Turks to Europe, while the Allied forces remain-ing there temporarily stood in chagrin. In Great Britain an important element of the Con-servatives withdrew their support from the Coalition Government, thus leading to the resignation of Lloyd George, the installation of Andrew Bonar Law as premier and a general election with a tri-party contest among the Conservatives, Liberals and Labor, called for Nov. 15. Civil war continued in Ireland, but attention was diverted from it by the more important events in the Near East.

The observations here presented are not those of an expert accountant, but of one who, while he has seen considerable service in the accounting departments of large companies, has spent more time in engineering and operating. This paper is intended to cover, in a measure, mine accounting for small mines, as distinguished from the elaborate systems, requiring many persons in the accounting department. I shall attempt to outline a system embracing the essentials of accounting, and simple enough in form to permit one or two persons to carry it on from month to month, in sufficient detail to be able to tell quickly the grade of ore, the prices received for metals, costs per ton for mining and milling, costs per foot for development, upward or downward tendencies in costs, ore settled or in transit, cash on hand, stocks of supplies on hand, efficiency of labor, etc. As in all accounting, there are two main divisions: that of revenue received for what is sold, and that of disbursements made for what is bought, so in mine accounting we have to consider chiefly the income derived from sales of ore or concentrates, and the expenses incurred in producing the said ore or concentrates in a marketable condition. I. Income The revenue of a mining company from the sale of ore or concentrates comes in the form of remittances, accompanied by settlement sheets made out by the buyer of the mine product, such as a smelting company. It is the duty of the mine accountant (or the person to whom this is assigned in connection with other work) to check these settlement sheets, against both the mine weights and assays, and the schedules of prices arranged between the mine and the smelter. As a rule, quotations for silver, lead, zinc, copper and other metals enter into the settlements, and require checking, as do also bills of lading. Each step of the arithmetical calculation is also checked.

EMPHASIS on the importance of grain boundary sliding as a mode of deformation at elevated temperatures has been presented elsewhere.' The extent to which boundary sliding occurs under certain creep conditions has been determined for high purity aluminum2,3 and aluminum alloys.' In general, boundary deformation extends quite far into the adjoining grains, resulting in a rather wide band of deformation along the grain boundaries. This has led some investigators to doubt that grain boundary sliding consists of shearing along the boundary surface; it has been contended instead that boundary sliding is a result of concentrated slip in the neighborhood of the deformed grain boundaries."' The purpose of this note is to present evidence that grain boundary sliding takes place by a bulk shear process. gh purity polycrystalline aluminum, wherever and whenever there is grain boundary sliding, boundary migration and concentrated deformation along both sides of the deformed boundary are associated with it. Therefore, it has been rather difficult to obtain unambiguous evidence of boundary sliding. On the other hand, it would be expected in certain alloys of aluminum, when tested under particular conditions. that the severity of the interfering effects of boundary migration and concentrated deformation along the deformed boundary might be reduced. Current research in this laboratory' shows that a 20 pct Zn-A1 solid solution alloy fractures in an intercrystalline manner during creep at 500°F with a small total elongation of not more than about 14 pct, and that it does so with extremely limited grain boundary migration. Accordingly, this alloy was chosen for the present study. The experimental procedure was similar to that used in previous work and has been presented elsewhere.' Two parallel flat surfaces were milled from a round specimen. The gage portion of the specimen was 1 in. x .09 in. x .17 in. The specimens, which were annealed at 1030°F for 24 hr, showed two to four grains across the width of the test bar. The specimens were subjected to creep at 500°F at stresses of 2000 to 5000 psi. The rupture times were from 10 sec to 3 hr. Appreciable boundary sliding occurred in all the tests. A typical example of boundary sliding is shown in Fig. 1. (The tension axis is vertical in the micrographs.) Sliding has taken place along the boundary between grains A and B unaccompanied by important boundary migration. The sharpness of the offset at the triple point can be clearly seen in grain C. As a result of sliding along the boundary between grains A and B, a new boundary surface between grains A and C was created. The offset at the triple point is about 0.07 mm. This boundary sliding is accompanied by the formation of rather sharp kinking bands and, of course, slip on several slip systems in grain C. This type of deformation has been referred to as fold formation' in previous work with high purity aluminum.

ALL strata not yielding oil or gas in commercial quantities or a corresponding amount of water may be called dry in a wide sense. In petroleum geology,, however, we may exclude all sands of too low or fin porosity to yield gaseous or fluid contents to the hole drilled in the sand before any original pressure that its contents may be under is disturbed. Most rocks are of this class and they are not reservoirs in our definition; their "dryness" is wholly a matter of course. What are the contents of the pores or what is the exact porosity of such rocks is of almost no concern to us, for economically they are "dry." What does interest us is the content of a rock having sufficient porosity and the pores of sufficient size to yield oil or gas in commercial quantities, if they were present under original pressure: Dryness of these reservoirs is a matter of supreme practical importance. Three views current as to such dryness seem, to me, to apply in a few cases only. It is the purpose of this paper to give reasons for this position and for believing that, in ordinary sedimentary rocks, there is only rarely a reservoir of competent porosity and undisturbed pressure that is dry in the sense of not yielding water, oil, or gas when first penetrated. 1. Gardner1 writes of some Kentucky sands, "There has never been present any salt water or other water in the sand." Absence of water cannot demonstrate this position. It is necessary to show that the rocks were not laid down in water, but in air, and that they became so enclosed, while still above the water-table of the, ground water, that water has not been able to enter since. Most of these sands, and certainly the productive limestones, were deposited in water; and such sands as have been commercially productive show no reason for believing that the overlying shale or limestone was not laid down progressively from one direction and in water that would have flooded it. No adequate explanation has been offered for this hypothesis, which is so inherently improbable.

INTRODUCTION Characterization of a site for the prediction and simulation of dynamic events requires the determination of mechanical properties of the rock at stress/strain levels and rates and at a scale appropriate for the events and critical structures involved. The structures of interest can be on the surface, underground, or designed to impact and penetrate into the site (projectiles). Dynamic events of interest are equally diverse: seismic waves from distance earthquakes or explosions; close-in phenomena associated with earthquakes and explosions; vibrations associated with heavy equipment or machinery; and stress transients associated with impact and penetration. The complexity of site characterization depends on two factors not specifically related to the nature of the site itself: the stress levels generated by the dynamic event and the sophistication of the prediction and simulation techniques. For very high stress levels, such as occur near a nuclear detonation, and for low stress levels, such as occur during seismic wave propagation, site characterization is simplified, and often certain details of the site are not particularly important, such as shear strength variations in the case of very high stress levels. In the intermediate stress range, however, all descriptive relations are non- linear, a complete finite strain constitutive model is required, and all details of the site, such as lithology and fracture distribution, become important. The site characterization must be complete enough to support the most sophisticated prediction and simulation technique that will be applied to the analysis of the dynamic event. The procedures of site characterization are illustrated in this paper by a specific dynamic event, projectile impact and penetration, and a specific site, an outcrop of Dakota Sandstone near San Ysidro, New Mexico. THE necessity of accurate temperature measurements in the glass-making industries is today being much more widely appreciated than in the past. The introduction of the modern simplified and perfected pyrometric methods in connection with exact regulation of furnace temperatures has caused a marked improvement in the glass product with a quickened rate of production. An example of the processes in which much improvement has been and still can be made is that of annealing or heat-treating the glass. This is one of the most delicate processes in glass manufacture and one that requires a most careful furnace control. The heat treatment is undertaken to decrease the possibility of breakage and, in glass for fine optical instruments, to prevent serious warping of accurately ground and polished surfaces and to make the glass more uniform throughout to the passage of light waves. These objects are accomplished by removing all the harmful stresses that exist in a piece of glass when it has been cooled too quickly or unevenly. Such stresses exist, for example, after it has been pressed, cast, or otherwise worked. Thus the process of annealing consists of heating the glass evenly to the temperature at which it softens just enough to relieve these stresses in a reasonable time and then cooling slowly and uniformly until the glass hardens again. Accordingly, the things that must be investigated and determined in order to anneal glass without loss of time are, the annealing temperature, the time that the glass should be held at this temperature while the stresses relax, and the quickest cooling procedure that will give satisfactory results. After these characteristics of the glass are known the problem is one of pyrometry and temperature control entirely. In cases when it is known that a glass article will be required to withstand some definite type of heat or mechanical shock it is often possible, by a proper heat treatment, to produce such a distribution of the stresses in the glass that it will be enabled to resist these shocks more effectively.

Bjorn Bolviken (Geochemist, Geological Survey of Norway, Trondheim, Norway)-Under the heading "Recognition of Anomalies," the author states, "If the frequency distribution is actually log-normal, the probability of these high values being part of the background population is small (less than 0.023 and 0.0013 for 2 and 3 standard deviation, respectively)." The figures quoted seem to be the probabilities of these high values being the mean rather than part of the background population unless "background" is defined as one single concentration. If the background is considered to be a statistical distribution of concentrations,50 (which is probably the case here since the author uses the term "background population"), the probability of any observed value being part of the background may be estimated through a calculation of the number of observed values that are in excess of (or below) the number expected to belong to the background. Apparently, some confusion exists in the literature regarding this point. Many authors accept the concept of background as being a statistical distribution, but do not seem to recognize the consequences of this concept. One of these consequences would be that the background of a chemical element should comprise any concentration between zero and a theoretical maximum, which is governed by the chemistry and mineralogy of the material

PRACTICALLY every metallurgical process in-volves, at some stage or another, the contact of a metal with a gas. Because of this, gas-metal re-actions are of great practical importance and have been subjected to numerous investigations. It has long been recognized that the presence of cuprous oxide in liquid copper has an important effect on its casting characteristics and .physical properties. This has led to the desirability of determining the quantitative relationships between cuprous oxide in the liquid copper and the usual gases present during processing. Such data are not only of practical importance but also of a theoretical interest in that they provide a means of applying the principles of physical chemistry to problems in applied metallurgy. The object of this investigation was to determine the quantitative relationship at equilibrium between the gases carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and the cuprous oxide content of liquid copper. The reaction and its equilibrium constant may be expressed as follows: 2 Cu (liq) + CO2 (g) = Cu2O + CO (g) acu2o X aco/a2 cu X aco2 Here the underlined symbol Cu2O designates cuprous oxide dissolved in liquid copper and (a), the activity of the various constituents. The activities of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are assumed to be directly proportional to their re- spective partial pressures and the activities of cuprous oxide and copper are taken to be proportional to their respective mol fractions. The equilibrium constant may then be expressed as follows: K2 = Ncu2o X Pco [Ncu]2 X Pco2 where N = mol fraction The solubility of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in liquid copper is a rather controversial subject.'-' A review of the literature is given by 0. W. Ellis.' It appears that carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are both only very slightly, if at all, soluble in liquid copper. Volskii and Slobodskoi5 determined the equilibrium between carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and liquid copper at 1100°C. Their results show a higher cuprous oxide content for a given CO/CO2 ratio than found in the present work. The system hydrogen, water vapor, and liquid copper was investigated by Allen and Hewitt8 over the temperature range of 1090" to 1350°C. Equilibrium values for the system carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and liquid copper calculated from these data agree reasonably well with the present work. Materials and Procedure The copper used was oxygen free, designated as OF and analyzed as 99.98 pct copper with no appreciable amount of any one impurity based upon spectrographic determinations. The carbon dioxide was cylinder gas averaging about 99.95 pct CO2 with air as the major impurity. The carbon monoxide was produced by passing carbon dioxide over heated charcoal. Alundum combustion boats were used as containers for the liquid copper. No appreciable reaction took place between the copper and the alumina. This was evident from the fact that the copper sample after a run did not ordinarily adhere to the bottom of the boat and that the

(written discussiont).-For electrical measuring instruments, especially those types that involve the Wheat-stone bridge or potentiometer principle and standards of electrical resist-ance, there has been, for a considerable time, a need for better resistance materials. For a satisfactory resistance material, much depends on the purposes for which it is to be used. For potentiometers and Wheatstone bridges, such as are in more or less general use, and the more common forms of resistance standards, a good quality of manganin answers fairly well. However, it should not be presumed that manganin is considered ideal for the purpose, for in measuring instruments and resistance stand-ards, there is still much to be desired. An experience of more than 10 years in the study of the resistance standards and resistance apparatus shows that manganin resistances change with time in a way that is very annoying and the maintenance of the unit of resistance to the desired accuracy requires an excessive amount of work or may be said to be prac-tically impossible. The changes in resistance are generally most rapid and erratic in resistances of very low and very high values. In resist-ances of low value, the resistance material is often in the form of thin sheets so that the surface is large and usually more or less unprotected from the atmosphere, or the oil in. the case of oil-immersed standards. In resistances of high value, the resistance material is in the form of fine wire and, therefore, the surface is large compared with the cross-section. In resistances of medium value, the surface is less, compared with the cross-section, or better protected, usually by a silk wrapping impregnated with shellac. This suggests that one of the difficulties with manganin is slow surface action or oxidation, even when an effort has been made to protect the surface from such action However, the changes observed cannot all be accounted for on this basis. There are, presumably, also some internal changes in the resistance material even when it has been annealed. Further; the changes in manganin resistances seem to be more or less independent of its electrical properties. In other respects, too, manganin is not ideal.

THE first difficulty mentioned is that in some instances two or more beds of coal separated by sandstone or slate rocks of considerable thickness in one part of a basin, are found running together in another part. Of course, we may happen to strike first the part of the basin where there is but a single seam, and in this case the bed would appear 60 divide into two or more branches within a short, distance. Such cases are not rare in the anthracite coal-fields. I would suggest as an explanation of this phenomenon the gradual sinking of the peat-marsh-the embryo coal-bed-on one side, and the moving forward of the marsh, so that on one part of the bed the formation of peat would still be progressing, while another part, being under water, would be covered with mud and sand. Thus we have different portions of the same bed of different ages. Now if the sinking of the marsh be stopped for a time, the bed will become thicker in the portions left exposed, and if the sinking now changes in direction, so that the part that had previously gone down commences to rise, we should have the phenomenon of a bed, continuous throughout, with one portion overlying another, and separated from it by rock strata. These are exactly the conditions observed in splitting beds. While one side of the lake is sinking, and the peat marsh moving on in that direction, the other side may be rising,

Dean Roscoe Pound, of Harvard Law School, in addressing the A.I.M.E. Petroleum Division on Feb. 22, 1934, said, "When you are able to work out a program that is mechanically feasible, that is economicaIly advisable, and which seems in your judgment, which is just as good as that of anyone, to be politically wise, you will not have very much trouble in the end in inducing the courts of today to find that it is legally sound." The purpose of this paper is to show: first, legal conditions necessary to promote conservation and stabilization; and second, to suggest operating procedure when those legal conditions are established. The proposal is mechanically feasible and economically advisable. A growing public understanding should make it politically wise. The disappointing progress in the development of conservation and stabilization can be attributed to the lack of two legal concepts as integral parts of oil and gas law; i.e., (1) a practical substitute for the capture rule, (2) collective ownership control for the individual oil and gas pool. When these two concepts are established on an equitable basis, conservation and stabilization procedure will become a comparatively simple process, more or less automatic in its adaptation and operation. Establishing these concepts is the function of the law-making agencies and might well be left to them for discussion except that the mechanical processes that give them form and substance must first be developed by the engineer. A Substitute for the Capture Rule Much has been written on these subjects, but the most concrete statement that has come to the attention of this writer is the following from an article by Charles G. Haglund in the Kentucky Law Journal of May, 1934: The Oxford1 case is not only authority for the proposition that it is competent for the legislature to modify the old property law of capture with respect to oil and gas but that it may also delegate such authority to a subordinate body.

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-I have the honor to present the following, report for the calendar year 1920. The activities which seem to call for special comment are: THE NEW FORM OF MAGAZINE MINING AND METALLURGY appeared every month during the calendar year and has been developed until it contains some ten departments. It has brought forth more commendatory letters than have been received at headquarters on any other subject throughout the year. Less than a dozen letters unfavorable to the change have been received, and the indications are that the magazine has met a want deeply felt, especially by members distant from headquarters. The technical papers printed by the Institute are published in abstract in the magazine and opportunity is given to members who desire them to receive full copies of any or all papers published. The Bound Volumes, as usual, contain all the papers in full and discussions thereof. FINANCES The greatly increased cost of paper and printing has put a tremendous burden on the Institute's finances, since the dues of $12 per year are only 20 per cent. greater than the members paid when the Institute was founded forty-nine years ago. This has resulted in a temporary deficit, similar to that encountered by many of our sister engineering societies. The fact that our Institute has lower dues and gives more in the way of publications to its members than any other of the national engineering societies has rendered the situation more difficult for us. MEETINGS The Annual Meeting in New York, the Field Meeting in the Lake Superior District, the meeting of the Petroleum and Gas members at St. Louis, and of the Institute of Metals Division in Columbus, Ohio, have all been described in full in the magazine.

Combined loader and transport, the Gismo is now built for sale in one size, 5 to 6 tons. It will operate in a minimum opening of 7x7 ft and can be built to operate at lower heights. Where space limitations are not a factor it could be designed with much greater carrying capacity-12, 18, or 25 tons-to be powered with a standard heavier tractor. The Gismo is mounted on crawler tracks of the same design as the tracks of the small Allis- Chalmers HD-6B tractor used to power it. With the HD-6B tractor it will negotiate upgrades of 12 pct and downgrades of 20 pct. The next tractor size would make the device feasible for steeper grades or for a machine of larger capacity at moderate grades.

THE reclaiming of metallics from slag and sweepings is of vital interest to every brass-foundry man, but the first cost and interest on the investment often make it prohibitive for the small foundry to enjoy the benefits of a complete concentrating unit. However, the cost of such an installation and the cost of operation are often exaggerated to such an extent that foundries dispose of their copper-bearing refuse at a great loss. This paper gives the actual costs and the returns obtained in the reclaiming plant used at the Ohio Brass Co. This plant is divided into two sections, the preliminary treatment and concentrating departments. In the former occur the screening, crushing, and hand-picking operations whereby most of the non-valuable and heavy metallic constituents are removed. The concentrating equipment consists of an elevator, bins, jigs, ball-mill, and table. PRELIMINARY TREATMENT The preliminary treatment varies, depending on whether the material is slag, foundry-floor sweepings, or brass casting-floor sweepings. Material of the first class is produced from the operation of six Steele-Harvey and six Schwartz furnaces; the second class represents sweepings from an average of thirty-five molding floors per day; and the last is collected around the sprue cutters. and knockout bench.
